We spent Christmas with loved ones and now, we’re headed for the “down week”, the week where nothing gets done. It’s a great time to make phone calls to those who were important to you in the past year, clean out a closet, plan a garden for spring, or get a headstart on taxes…. but it’s still too early to take down the tree.
Get the menial chores out of the way and clear the deck for 2020, because we will be busy in an ELECTION YEAR!
Don’t you wish the election was tomorrow? We know we’re voting for President Trump. We could save the USA economy BILLIONS! Just schedule the election, RIGHT NOW!

We always get one as part of our Christmas feast, then keep what’s left semi-frozen to have for New Years with black-eyed peas.
I usually add a generous amount of bite-sized pieces of ham to a pan of black-eyed peas, then simmer for while.
My hubby is not particularly fond of black-eyed peas…but he dutifully eats them at New Years, for luck.
What can I say…he started out in life as a Canadian, and had never had black-eyed peas before he met me.

I’ve often been told what you do on New Year’s Day, you do all year long–so be happy, helpful and loving.
If you can find crowder peas, they work the same (luck), but he will like them better, I’ll bet. I sure do. They have a milder, creamier flavor and texture.
P.S. They look pretty much the same.
There’s also the ‘Lady’ pea, which is even tastier than the crowder, less easy to find though.

Black eyed peas eating on New Years Day has ‘evolved’ over generations in the South!
My grandparents always had the dried black eyed peas, soaked overnight and cooked a long time with either a ham bone or bacon.
Some time later, home jar canned black eyed peas came along.
Later, you could buy canned black eyed peas.
Nowadays, with home and store freezers, you can have fresh frozen black eyed peas.
Old timers always had hog jowl with the black eyed peas.
Our generation liked either ham, a pork roast, or my favorite grilled BBQ meaty country ribs!
We also make black eyed pea dip, black eyed pea casserole and black eyed pea salad!
Lots of ways to eat your peas!
oh, and there must be collard greens in my tradition… along with the peas and ham.
Yes, my family said the peas and greens brought money in the New Year.

Foote apparently said he was “horrified” by the “harsh sentence”.
The Zambian president didn’t like this “interference” into their domestic policies.
Foote was getting threats from locals there.
This had been going on for about a month.
So the Zambian president thought it was time for Foote to leave.
Uh…our ambassadors are supposed to work to improve and preserve good relations with other countries.

So I think it’s probably a good thing this guy was removed from that post.

I believe that LGTBQ if they are American citizens fall under US flag.

People brought leftovers…even a half bottle of wine, in one case. And LOTS of desserts!
But, it was fun and everyone loved the idea…it might become a tradition….as long as our energy lasts. After a Xmas dinner and this event, I must admit every part of my body was aching last night.
I’ m thinking Chinese take-out sounds awfully good for dinner tonight!

my kids and I disagree about this a lot…I buy a $1.29 manual opener and they buy a $12 electric one–and then continue to spend money (don’t care if it’s a little bit or not) every time they use it.
I use my muscles and it costs less…they like the “convenience” and stare blankly at me when i ask what they’d do in they were in CA and had no electricity.

The electric can opener is a fight in our house, that’s for sure. We went without one for YEARS, and then suddenly one appeared. I still won’t use it. My mother tries. My one brother…well, it has a motor.

I have a manual can opener and it never came to me to buy an electric one. I am by nature a gadget person but not for can opener.
At my age I revert and make my bread by hand and also my noodles. I find more joy and satisfaction on having my ands in the dough and smell the flower and yeast. Even I cake to sit and stir the poundcake.
I even whip egg whites by hand with a whisk . I should give away my electric gages 🙁

I use a can opener that is nothing but two pieces of metal and a metal crank–no plastic handles or anything like that (no it’s not one of those little Army can openers). I wish they still made those. I had a GF once who struggled with that can opener so I bought a fancier one, still manual, that broke almost instantly.

I have played it twice today!
Unfortunately I can’t do it here. Brave for some reason the last few days has been hiccuping, just freezing every ten seconds or so no matter what I’m doing…for about five seconds. I’ve literally had to stop typing replies and wait for the cursor to come back, over and over (that can’t be my connection speed or anything like that). And videos are completely unwatchable.
I tried it over in Firefox and it works. Now I’m trying older and older versions of Brave and they’re SOMEWHAT better.

I found myself locked out of WordPress and the Qtree for a couple of months. It came after a nasty virus got into my desktop via the TOR browser I was using.
One thing I found in my research is that the vast majority of browsers are based on Google Chrome technology, including BRAVE. One of the few exceptions is Mozilla Firefox. I was able to get back to using WordPress by using that as my browser. I must have gone through about a half dozen browsers before discovering that.
Now I am back to using BRAVE (go figure), but am unable to see the content of some posts on WordPress. They all seem to be images only. Lately I’ve discovered that if I move my cursor around on the blank area, sometimes a tiny clickable link shows up.
If I can’t solve this, I’ll go back to firefox. I know this is a brave issue because I have tried firefox.
By the way, everything between the word “this” (on the first line) to “tried” I typed blind because Brave was frozen up.
Punkin, feel your pain, it is frustrating, wish I knew how to help you, I’m surprised the computer is not in the driveway by now.

Jumping in here with a comment about the cinnamon honey butter recipe I shared a few days ago. Gave it to a workout friend who had 4 adult children and significants home for Xmas. DP mentioned how she thought the butter might be paired with bacon…,well, this group split and toasted croissants, applied the butter and then put crisp bacon inside…said it was delicious…so, you were on the mark, DP.
Will be buying lots of carrots this week for Daughn’s Killer Carrots recipe. Serving onion bread pudding with the beef filet as a change from usual variation of potatoes.
Am spending the morning with cat snuggled next to me looking up recipes using fresh apple cider (of which I have an abundance of right now.). Beef stew using 3 1/2 cups apple cider…yay!
It’s drizzling here today (despite “one or two brief showers” forecast) and I’m looking out thinking how LUCKY we were yesterday with beautiful weather. With some creativity, we did have places for 30 to sit inside but everyone was delighted to enjoy the mild early evening outdoors (while we can!)

I struggled about the potato dish, and finally decided on polenta. Went over well with the PR. Had the Italian style corn meal dish about 2 months ago at a realllllllly nice restaurant. It was a dinner fundraiser for STEM scholarships for students from my HS who will be going to Purdue.
Main course was a pork hock over polenta and it knocked my socks off.
My polenta came out pretty good, but not as creamy as I would have liked. My Instant pot didn’t come up to pressure with such a short cooking time. Had to run the batches through 2 times. I actually needed to make 3 batches and combine for the quantity that I figured I needed.
I used butter and cream cheese rather than butter and parmesan cheese. I figured DH might like some leftover corn meal with maple syrup for a hot breakfast cereal.
Personally, I’m fond of grits made with cream and jalapeños ala NOLA.
Did I miss the onion bread pudding recipe? Sounds yummy, but about 25% of my crew are mostly gluten free.
No, you didn’t miss it, but here it is..
Savory onion bread pudding (Makes 12 servings)
6 medium onions, thinly sliced
7 oz aged white cheddar cheese, shredded (kerrygold Dubliner)
4 tbsp. Unsalted butter
2 tsp salt
1 tsp dried thyme
Cooking spray
2 cups heavy whipping cream (or half/half)
6 large eggs (or 1 1/2 cups substitute)
6 oz package Martha White buttermilk cornbread mix
Slice onions, shred cheese. Melt butter in large sauté pan on medium. Stir in onions, salt, pepper and thyme…cook 20-30 minutes, stir occasionally until onions are soft and brown. Remove from heat.
Preheat oven to 350. Coat 9x 13” pan with spray. Beat cream, eggs and corn muffin mix in large bowl until blended and pour into pan. Top evenly with cheese and onion mixture.
Bake 30-35 minutes or until golden and center is set. Let stand 10 minutes.

Since the main family dinner with ALL the kids, spouses and grandkids was the day after Christmas here at our home, but the kids from MO couldn’t get here until Christmas Day at dinner time, I actually did a 7 pounder on Christmas Day for supper following the timing and temp, and then did the same thing again for the 26th roasting 2 – 9 pounders. Consistently great. Out SIL was the carver who drooled all the way through the carving. Oohing and saying look at this…perfect. LOL.

For the past few days, ever since I did a massive amount of software upgrades, brave has been freezing solid every ten seconds or so, for about five seconds. Even while I am typing comments.
I’ve gone back two versions now, and it’s better (I’m able to type this without tearing my hair out), but videos still don’t work well.
Steve, did you try running the compatibility troubleshooter? I use Brave as my primary browser.
Where do I find that?
Honestly, since developers started playing “hide the menu bar” I can’t ever find anything any more.

The NRA Institute of Legislative Action reported that budget bill (HB30) allocates a quarter million dollars to implement a set of gun control measures that Northam and his anti-gun cronies are anxious to carry out in the upcoming session of the Virginia state legislature.
The $250,000 is to be assigned to the Corrections Special Reserve Fund in order to facilitate the “increase in the operating cost of adult correctional facilities resulting from the enactment” of Northam’s gun control policies. Among the laws listed that this budget is expected to cover is a ban on conventional semi-automatic firearms, the criminalization of private firearms, and red flag gun confiscation orders.
These gun control policies will do very little to reduce crime.

That said, our camellia buds here are rather large, as are our dwarf magnolias and our hydrangea buds.
