Iran is prone to earthquakes, and they often have weirdly off-the-charts casualty counts. As an example, the 10/17/89 Loma Prieta quake in the San Francisco Bay area was a 6.9 and had 63 deaths. By contrast, On 12/26/03, Bam, Iran (a far less populated area) had a 6.6 that resulted in 26,271 deaths.
Why such a huge disparity? Building codes. Unreinforced mud-brick construction is a deathtrap in earthquakes. If you look at casualty rates per capita in the two regions, it just looks horrific.
Earthquakes in the area are due to interaction between the Arabian Plate and Eurasian Plate which is forming the Zagros Mountains.
Yes, Iran does get earthquakes.
They usually occur along a line parallel to the plate boundary that runs along the western edge of the country, near the coast.

Been doing this for years, since OK started getting quake clusters.

Technically it’s not the beginning, as the first decade would have run from 1 through 10 A.D. (there being no year zero), so following that through decades start with the year ending in a 1 and end at the end of the following year ending in a 0.
Not that anyone actually cares about this; the informal “80s” “90s” nomenclature clearly references the second to last digit. No one talks of the 202nd decade (which is what this is).
Centuries work similarly; but people are much more likely to reference, e.g., the 20th century as opposed to the 1900s. So I thought of it as: 1900s = 1900-1999, 20th century 1901-2000.
Yes, I remember this from the Millennium — the first time I ever heard such a rationale.
I was glad to see the Queen say otherwise, I must admit.
Going back 20 years, though, isn’t it odd, then, that the bug (I was part of such a software project) was to occur in 2000 rather than 2001? 😉
Not being sarcastic, just saying. I do think some of these pedants blow smoke up our fundaments.
The bug was because the odometer was flipping over, and people were worried code would compare 00 to 99 and say (reasonably) that someone born in 00 was older than someone born in 99. The fix was to make sure all years were represented as four figures, rather than just two.
That’s a simple rollover hazard. But, carrying the analogy further…the odometer STARTED at 1, not zero.
The real source of the issue is that there wasn’t a concept of zero back then. Through the early middle ages, the phrasing would have been “The first year of our Lord”; that eventually got written down as 1, not 0, A.D.
For the same reason, in music a “Perfect fifth” is the FOURTH note after the tonic. They had no choice but to consider the tonic to be the 1st note back when they were naming things.
I understand what the bug was about. As I said, I worked on such a software project at the time.

I see now you explained that you actually worked on it; if I had noticed that before, perhaps I could have saved myself some typing.

watched the news this morning to catch the weather and i caught a story about NY farmers suing the federal gov’t (i think) over the farm workers bill. Apparently now farmers have to allow a day off, and overtime pay for farm workers after they were allowed to unionize.

I was out of Surrender (which seems to only make the ants change locations) and put out some diatomaceous earth on a couple of beds and it seems to have done the trick. I treated one at the base of a bay myrtle, and will let you know what happened to it next time I go out that way.
Oh boy…let us know for sure if it worked..I’ll try that on the ants in SC yard. They do seem to relocate with the other stuff I’ve tried

The deal w/nests is, the adults pick up the DE and take it back to the nests…where the abrasive surfaces of DE lacerate the larvae, thus defeating nest growth.
Often DE enters the joints of the adults, wreaking havoc on them also.

My Sister broadcasts it in her manure pile (she has horses), and it does a terrific job of killing off larvae.
DE is exoskeleton material from oceanic, calciferous organisms…used to clean pool filters due to it’s abrasive nature.
It’s GREAT for slug control, but needs refreshing if you live where it rains during gardening season.
This time around, it did not work.
Now it’s an even bigger nest.
So I gave it another heavy dose of diatomaceous earth and some HotShot ant killer powder on top of that.
At first I thought Surrender was doing the job (it’s very smelly) but they just moved. Amdro was the earlier supposed fire ant killer.
So far, nothing has been all that great.
So far that is what I have found, NOTHING works. I am about to dig out the nests one by one this winter when it is too cold for them to move fast and SPRAY the queen and larvae. (A two person job with one digging and one spraying.)
I figure vaseline on the handle of my spade will keep them from climbing up and biting me.
There is one remedy where you have two people each did a nest and swap ants and they are supposed to fight and kill each other. They put baby powder or corn starch on the shovel handle to stop them climbing up the handles.

I decided to try a dry mix of ground orange peel, boric acid, pyrethrin, diatomaceous earth and washing soda with a little cayenne pepper to spice it up as one site recommended hot pepper, dried whole and ground.
I sprinkled it out and got a rising of fire ants, then decided to pour some of the mix over the bed with very hot water, and guess what!???!!! Up came a lot of BIG RED ants – about the length of a thumbnail. I didn’t know various species of ants cohabited.
We are expecting a good bit of rain this afternoon and evening. I’ll keep you posted on my success.
Thinking about you and your pastures…. have you considered steaming them with a rigged up rolling cooker and a steam/hot water spray pipe to go beneath the surface? One old farmer I know used a portable cooker to take his grandkids out to the corn field to cook fresh corn on the cob while it was still attached to the stalk!
Possibly you could decimate an entire ant colony with hot water and steam, while not adding chemicals to the pasture.
