20200303: Coronavirus Ground Reports

This is a thread for reporting your ACTUAL PERSONAL ground reports – what you are SEEING and HEARING about the coronavirus, and your THOUGHTS in relation to those things.

I’ll go first.

I was at the FLYOVER GROCERY STORE today.

These are the things I observed….

People are using the wipes on the cart handles without any self-consciousness.

Stock on freshly baked bread seemed lower than normal.

Easter candy is already out on display.

The number of people seemed normal.

Crowd behavior seemed normal.

Overall vitamin stock was FULL.

Vitamin C was dented but no items were empty – down to 2 or 3 bottles left on the shelf for some of the “economy size” items, so Vitamin C is definitely getting hit, but not OUT.

No other vitamins or supplements seemed affected.

Note that there are no COVID-19 patients in said city or region.

Orange juice stock looked normal.

All other stock looked normal.

Clorox Wipes have been placed on display at the end of the CANNED FOOD AISLE.

Wipes in the display were moving but not briskly enough to set off any alarms.

Canned food stocks are NORMAL.

Specials on mac-and-cheese, energy bars, tuna, and other “short term normie prepper” foods.

No grocery carts seemed to be of a “prepper” nature.

No panic behavior by cars or people.

So that’s it – pretty uneventful.

What say you?

Glad you put this up, Wolfie. I’ve been in AZ for two months, and was a bit anxious about what was happening back home in CO.
First AZ … I was in Scottsdale/Phoenix area for Jan-Feb. Saw no one wearing face masks or any noticeable change in behaviors at grocery stores, restaurants or golf courses 🤓 The face masks were sold out in pharmacies, but everything else was fully stocked each time in grocery stores, including Vit C and zinc tablets.
Today in grocery store – Denver suburb- No one was wearing face masks and no noticeable change in behavior or buying volume. There was low inventory of toilet paper, but fully stocked for canned goods, cereals and other dry goods. If you hadn’t been reading the news, you wouldn’t notice anything different.
Hubby did go to the pharmacy counter to pick up a prescription. He said a guy at counter before him was coughing a lot, and folks in line were muttering nervously. When the guy left the counter, the pharmacy clerk immediately came out from behind the counter and wiped the whole area down with lysol wipes before she called the next customer to the counter. Folks in line thanked her.
Amazon shopping – On Saturday I was able to order all the vitamins, gloves, masks etc. Although I didn’t actually buy all of that, the things I ordered arrived already or will be here by Friday.
Note: Schools close here routinely if flu/viruses mean lots of absences. None have closed, but it would not be out of the ordinary to have some shut downs. Flu A & B have both been making the rounds for last 4 months. Last year those closed a few schools.

kea

Over the last two weeks or so I saw one person wear a mask at target, aldi and ikea but again this could be do to the flu.
People doing shopping. Nothing different at all. The fast food places were hoping.
Easter candy everywhere.
Talked to a friend about why the virus popped up but that’s about it.
Truth be told nothing feels or looks different

Alison

Kea, remind me what state you are in ?
I imagine states with announced outbreaks have a tad more anxiety or prepping urgency. Neither AZ or CO have patients yet (think an AZ couple was on the cruise ship).

kea

The good old Midwest. 🙂 MO
Ironically the only prep people are talking about is storm prep aka tornadoes

Alison

Ah, the Show Me state 🤓🇺🇸

kea

Nods yup. Plus an Arch and two rivers. True fly over country! 😀

Mask wearers, usually, are actually chemo patients. At least the ones I’ve known. One of my clients used to wear one when we went out to the stores.

Teagan

The stocking cap or bandana on their heads is usually a clue for chemo, but they are generally the only ones I’ve seen with masks.
I was in a medical office today but it was dermatology, not general medicine. At any rate the waiting room was filled and no masks to be seen.

kea

Yes I know people who have done that as well. Or with very bad allergies.

Barb Meier

When my mom had chemo, it killed her white blood cells so I can see why masks would be smart for chemo patients.

Deplorable Patriot

Yes, this woman I used to sit with, it would be chemo week, and she was under orders to wear a mask.
In cold weather, I’ve seen a lot of people with asthma wearing them as well.

Valerie Curren

When my son was post-transplant & in HS he had to wear a mask for several months in the early aftermath. His para-pro used to also wipe down any desk or computer area he needed to use. this was because of the high dosage of anti-rejection meds & risk of Him getting infected not to protect others from him.

My sons goes to Ohio State and this is the latest information we received from the university. They initially only restricted travel for 14 days, so am glad to see these updates.
“Continuing to be proactive about the safety of our university community, Ohio State is including South Korea in the temporary restrictions for university-sponsored travel for all faculty, staff and students through at least Monday, April 20, 2020.
Those with personal travel to or from South Korea will also be required to report their travel to travelreporting@osumc.edu through at least April 20 so that we can offer proper resources and immediately assist any member of our community who may become ill.
The previously announced restrictions for university-sponsored travel and mandatory reporting of personal travel to China also remain in effect through at least April 20.”
Also, I have a niece that works at one of the cancer centers here and they received an email today telling them to ask people of their recent travel history, but they are apparently only doing that in the emergency department at this time. Kind of freaked her out, because they can have up to a 100 patients a day for mammograms and other procedures, and she hadn’t even considered it. Of course she’s young, and blissfully ignorant much of the time to things going on in the world.

Both my son and his wife work for Michigan University and Medical center Ann Arbor. They told me that they were advised if they get sick any sign of it to quarantine themselves and not come to work. That directive was for everyone working there.
We had a flu outbreak about two weeks ago ( I had it a month ago) and First Care Emergency center was packet. Students also were sick and it took them 4-5 weeks to get over it.
Now I wonder how do people know it is the regular flu or the Chinese flu?
I was told about 6 weeks ago that the flu settles in the chest and some people came down with pneumonia and were hospitalized.
I picked up more Vitamins C and Elderberry syrup and zinc. I always have basic staples in the house to last for a month. Bought more pet food a six week supply. More flour for my bread baking.
I did post in another thread that when sitting in the airport in Cincinnati I noticed small groups total 15 Chinese all with face masks. They were the only one wearing the masks.
Otherwise people are doing they’re shopping going out for dinner. The restaurants were packed Friday and Saturday evening in Cincinnati. People travel saw lots of people in the Hotel and Airport was packet.
I noticed more wipes in storers like Whole Foods and Trader Joes.
One thing my son seems angry about is that people do not wash their hands. He said there is a cultural change where people do not wash their hands. I know our generation does but so many people now from over cultures have different sanitation habits.

Valerie Curren

I take my son pretty regularly to the University of Michigan hospitals & their standard practice, at least as far as visiting the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Annex goes, is to question everyone upon entry about illnesses & travel. They give you a sticker for entrance & require wearing a mask that they provide for any areas of concern.
When my son was in the early years post liver transplant he always wore a mask when we went to U of M since all the immunosuppressive therapy meds he was on meant a compromised immune system. My husband used to comment that most any time we went to Ann Arbor one or both of us would end up coming down with something.
In recent years we try to use the hand sanitizer &/or wipes to clear off computer keyboards we use in the Family Resource Center, to avoid others that seem sick, & regularly wash hands, & try to avoid touching our faces. I always use paper towels to turn off sink handles & open doors after visiting the restroom (my mom’s an RN & taught us some practices I continue). We haven’t gotten As sick when taking those extra precautions of late.
U of M has several free standing stations with anti-backterial gel/foam, masks, & tissues so one can use precautions to their heart’s content; these have been in place for years now. We go back there next week for a Nephrology clinic visit & I hope to get his liver blood work done there then too, so will try to update on any changes since Coronavirus came on the scene…

Sadie Slays

Thank you, Wolfmoon. I always find “ground report” threads useful no matter what the subject.
Life continues on as normal here. The grocery store I visited over the weekend was busy, but the shelves were stocked as normal. No panic runs on bread, milk, or toilet paper, which are usually the first to go during impending bad weather.
I talked with my super normie Democrat relatives over the weekend. They complained about “media fear-mongering” (their words) over the WuFlu. Even they aren’t buying into it, which surprised me. I figured they’d at least be into the “blame Donald Trump” aspect of it.

Alison

I like the Coup Flu – attempt #19

NYGuy

You guys are funny

Valerie Curren

Wow, that’s strange because that political cartoon, AF Branco I think, with 2020D Chess has a Winne the Pooh character chess piece wearing a Chi-Com flag shirt & the body was colored like Team Trump but the base was blue like the deep state…hmm…Kind of like playing for both teams at the same time, or appearing to be for you at the surface but your foundational status is that of the enemy!

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

Went tonight, grabbed purrell wipes, ran em over cart handle real good, Store app has Big warning on limits on wipes and cleaners and paper goods. Those things are on the ends of the isles next to cashiers, weird.
Next to pharmacy, had to get medi – 4 of em. I had coupons on GoodRx app for 2 so they had to be changed in computer and print drug sheets w/ new prices for each. You pull up coupon details on phone and hand to clerk, takes a while for her to enter data, then she hands back, I find the next one and give her the phone, except it wasn’t working. We went back and forth for a while until she deleted everything and started from scratch. It worked, I save $30. Sign machine(With communal pen, ick), insert card, good to go. Back of my mind, giving my phone to clerk so many times and standing around all the people in pharmacy line bugged me. Sniffles, eyes burning. Took Sudafed before I left, had headache sniffles earlier today Allergies, weather change always get me.
Onto vitamin C. All brands BOGO. The store brand (cheapest) smaller sizes were wiped out. Only the biggest most expensive giant bottles were left. Had to do milligram/quantity/price math between the other 3 brands to find something doable. Did not want 600 pills for $35, too much!!! I already get a lot of C daily, but this is extra for if I get sick. Finally found a deal and had a coupon too!
Next down the hair care isle, I have a coupon. Need to pass Family in front of me with kids, then I locked eyes with the child in the basket coughing, stopped 4ft away, and said OH NOPE, don’t need it. (Run!) Turned around and off to peanut butter, some holes on shelves, got mine, on to canned soups, fruit, and veggies. Good soup was gone, struggled to find another flavor, wanted a few cans cuz it was on sale. Got many last week. Picked 2, went to fruit, kinda bare. Lucky to find my oranges got all 8 cans they had. Store brand, a lot of stock missing. Next down to mushrooms, all big cans gone. Not gonna waste money on small cans or more expensive brands, keep going. Milk, shelves kinda bare. Crackers on sale w/ coupon✔️ Fruit,✔️
Time to checkout. Eyes, cheeks burning. Scan and bag everything, insert card, approved, ready to go. No receipt, I HAVE to touch a button on the screen to complete transaction . 😩. Do it fast. Load up basket, drive by purell rags, snag more. Wipe car handles, PHONE, load car.
Get home, unload, take another Sudafed, and C. Headache, face burning, ‘sore throat’ (odd) 3 hrs later.🙁 Clean face, More C and NiNi medi 🛌 😴. Will see tomorrow. Don’t know if I freaked myself out or sinuses acting up. Prayed my way, before, during, and after. .
I HATE TOUCHING COMMUNITY SCREENS!!!!!
I do finally have Enough food and drugs for 30 days. Relieved.

Oh, didn’t see anybody else that looked one bit concerned.

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

No reports in Houston area. Only San Antonio cases thus far in Texas.

Valerie Curren

None known in Michigan yet, thankfully…

Butterfly,
For the first time in 60 years I have not taken an antihistamine in a couple of weeks. AND the trees are flowering.
I have major allergies — 39 out of 40 on the scratch test and IgE level the highest the doctor ever saw. He told me never to donate blood. Mine would kill a normal person 😲 — Anyway after doing the corona virus research and seeing the recommendations of another treeper, I upped my Vitamins & such specifically to deal with chronic inflammation.
I always start with the minimum and only change one thing at a time.
VITAMINS:
vitamin C – 3,000 mg
vitamin D – 225 mcg
vitamin B12 – 5000 mcg
HERBS:
Nettle leaf – 435 mg (I am taking 1/4 the recommended dose)
*https://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/stinging-nettle-uses-and-risks#1
Licorice root – 450 mg (I am taking 1/2 the recommended dose)

*https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4722619/
Cinnamon – 1000 mg (1gram) (I upped it from occasional use for blood sugar control to twice daily.)

Turmeric-Curcumin – 1000mg
I started taking this for relief from arthritis pain (another chronic inflammatory condition)

CBD oil
I started taking this for relief from arthritis pain also. (It is nice to be off the pain killers that were eating up my stomach)

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

I’m super good on lots of supplements, except your 1st 3 herbs. Maybe I can amazon. Have to be careful with C’s&B’s, too much make me itch, give me bumps. What mg CBD oil do you take? I have cream but forget to use. I also get impatient and and do multiple things at a time, I know, gotta work on that.
AND what do you know about steroids? They gave me a medrol dose pack for inflammation which I’m hesitant to start, doesn’t that wear you down and make you more susceptible to infections?

NYGuy

Bfly I had to take steroids for my eye and ear issues. Do the short doses with the wind down and you will be fine.

Gail Combs

On the CBD oil.
RECOMMENDED: 1/2 dropper 2X daily
Hemp oil extract – 16.7 mg
Cannabidol – 5mg
(It is grown the next town over.)
That is placed under the tongue for at least 30 secs. I try for several minutes since it then absorbs directly into the blood.
I have a very small jaw so I take about 1/4 dropper 2x daily for the first few weeks and then once a day unless I am going to wrestle with sheep, goats, ponies or 50# feed sacks.
I was really surprised when I had hauled in 10 sacks of grain (500#) ahead of the rain. My back started complaining and instead of a pain killer I took some CBD oil had a bite to eat and the the turmeric. The pain went away and more important IT DID NOT COME BACK THEN NEXT DAY. 😲 — 😁 💃
>>>>>
Again I am NOT A DOCTOR, I am a chemist so I suggest doing a lot of reading and talk to your doctor if you have a decent one.

Rodney Short

I love my oil for pain it really does the job.

grandmaintexas

Very informative. Vitamin C is the bomb.

Valerie Curren

This is amazing & wonderful news!!! God Bless You!

NYGuy

I should go get some vitamin C. I already drink tons of orange juice.

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

Yep, you really don’t absorb max quantities from food. Supplements are insurance/assurance.

NYGuy

ok I am going today. You guys convinced me.

rf121_says_coronavirus_is_a_flu

You do if you eat real meat. We absorb nutrients poorly from plant products. Lots of people here talking about inflammation issues. That is from your diet. Most of you would benefit from doing a 30 day meat and water only elimination diet. You would be surprised at how many of your issues will resolve. We ain’t designed to be medicated.

I am generally a carnivore.
I pretty much gave up sugar, all grains (except for rice) many fruits (I am allergic GRrrrrr) and eat fresh or frozen veggies.
An interesting side note: We did our last big prep buy and stopped at the HWY 55 restaurant. I had their philly steak sub….. This morning my BP was back up and my allergies kicked back in….
BACK to NO GRAINS and no NaCl salt.

rf121_says_coronavirus_is_a_flu

Carnivore is good. Eating while traveling is tough. I generally just fast.

Valerie Curren

You remind me of a couple of drug store runs I did these last 2 weeks. Last week I needed some OTC stuff & to get my son’s anti-rejection meds, Prograf 1mg & .5mg dosages. We’d seen liver transplant clinic recently & the doctor had mentioned that some pharmacies could no longer get Prograf/tacrolimus so he may need to change which anti-rejection med my son takes. We got the 1st round of refills on that med OK last month. All of this was before Coronavirus was as Obviously on the scene. The Dr. didn’t explain the underlying issue on the Prograf, I wondered then or perhaps later if it had to do with component ingredients or the med directly out of China & supply chain breaking down, per all the info here on the Q-Tree.
Well, we ultimately got the .5mg Prograf capsules at our usual pharmacy, Rite Aide, this month (& they were in individual blister packs, a format we’d never encountered in almost 7 years of this med–it was at least packaged in MI) but they were having a hard time getting the 1mg dose even after attempting to re-order it on a daily basis. They looked at the various suppliers, which were all out of state (we’re in Metro Detroit & suppliers were in WI &/or MN, I think) & they were all on backorder & supposed to come in the next week or so. The pharmacist did a computer search & found that another RA locally had 600 1mg Prograf capsules, so I got that refill there a couple of days later.
At Usual Rite Aide I was looking for some Vitamin C drops or other formulations. The large bag of the store brand, & best value, was out. I didn’t look in many other aisles but the vitamin & cough related aisles seemed pretty well stocked, though sometimes out of the less expensive store brand versions of a couple things I checked.
At Nearby Rite Aide they had a table set up near the entrance with numerous items related to cleaning &/or immunity on display, as single examples of various things they carried. This store was about twice as large as the Usual RA so probably had better staffing. The pharmacists, who were both very odd people (facial tics etc) didn’t know anything about the Prograf situation & weren’t seemingly very interested in discussing it. They have some regular patients that take Prograf but I couldn’t get a solid answer as to whether they’d be getting more of the 1mg capsules in, we needed 60 of their 600 supply…
We’ve been having annoying problems getting certain type of controlled substance meds for a number of years now. When my son was most recently post-op we had some major hassles getting his prescription pain meds. The then pharmacist said that the “opioid” changes in the law meant that they couldn’t consistently get sufficient pain meds to cover their regular patients, let alone someone with a sporadic need like my son. I had the choice at one point of accepting a significantly short amount of pills & attempting to get another prescription to get the remainder, as in they would no longer give you a complete fill, even if it was in 2 batches because they didn’t have enough on hand. We chose some meds vs none & wait to get the full amount when/if it became available since he was having sufficient pain to need pain killers Now.
For ADHD meds he takes a form of Ritalin & the “opioid” laws mean that we can only get that med refilled when there is only a day or two of that med remaining. It is a pain in general as I do a 2 week pill box fill & regularly have insufficient Metadate/ritalin? to do the second filling. We used to have to get paper scripts every other month though the pharmacy is able to get 2 months of scripts electronically from the Dr. now, though I still have to directly request these scripts from the Dr’s office. Like the pain meds, if there aren’t enough to give a complete refill they will no longer give a partial fill & complete it when they get a shipment…you have to get another script. Also, if you mess up on the counting & run out they will no longer “spot” you a couple of pills, like they used to, until a new script might be obtained. Given that my son has been on this ADHD med for more than a decade & we’ve gotten it the entire time on a monthly basis from that location the whole process is rather a big pain…
Back to CV potential changes. My husband went shopping at Sam’s Club & said virtually every cart had at least one monster TP package & they were nearly out of their warehouse supply of TP. Other paper products were also pretty low. He didn’t notice people acting weird or hoarding & the vitamin section was still well stocked. He got some vitamin C w/ zinc there. He did see someone wearing a mask somewhere, but he doesn’t remember where that was now. At the local grocery store today things were well stocked & “there was plenty of booze on the shelf, so people haven’t completely lost their minds”!–a direct quote from my husband…
I’d been asking one of my sons to pick up another bag of CVS Vitamin C drops for a couple weeks but he kept forgetting. I was at an appointment in a nearby city w/ a CVS store just down the strip mall. I planned to get a couple of bags of those vitamin C drops, if available, but I got the last one of the store brand. In that section, bags of cough drops, etc, it seemed like most of the store brand/value bags were out. Cursorily glancing at the vitamin section it appeared pretty well stocked. There were a handful of customers & everyone was acting “normal”…
All of this represents encounters in 5 different Metro Detroit cities in the last week & a half…3 pharmacies, 1 grocery store, & 1 warehouse store…
Oh, to add a 6th city, our son was going shooting with a friend & said that Walmart no longer carries hand gun ammo, he didn’t know if you could still get it from WalMart online, as that used to be the best price…

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

I checked Sams online today, all their TP and most other brands are out of stock online AND in stores.. Sounds like people went nuts last weekend.
Regarding your son’s medicine, have you checked with another pharmacy that may be better stocked? Their supply issues are causing you too much extra work and I bet extra money. I know it always costs me more to get any quantity other than 30. For example, I need 37.5mg of thyroid med. It only comes 25, 50, 75, 100mg and higher. If Dr writes script for #45 25mg pills the price is $40. So instead I get #30 75mg, cut them in half for $60 which is a 2mo supply. I use the GoodRX app. It lets you easily change dosage and quantities and finds the pharmacy with lowest cost. Don’t know about ritalin but on opioids there is still a 2 day window for refills. They base the date off of day of pickup, not day they fill it.
Also I keep checking the App for every drug because they change the coupons and lower the prices often. The last 2 years President Trump has kept his promise. I’m paying a lot less than I used to.

Valerie Curren

Sounds like you’ve got a good deal going. For us that son has Medicaid (he’s on SSI) in addition to BCBS from my husband’s work. We try to use providers (medical, dental, therapeutic, & pharmacy) that accept both insurances to keep our out-of -pocket costs way down. Currently we have $0 co-pays on all his meds except for a multivitamin supplement, which costs us $0.90 a month, so I’m not too worried about prices, thankfully!
I did look on GoodRx for a new ADHD med my husband is on that has a $100 monthly co-pay through our insurance. At this time GoodRx is much more expensive.
There is some type of online medication program that Might make the co-pay $50 but I need to find out if we might qualify financially for it.
I used to have to cut some of my son’s pills years back. We have a hinged pill-cutter box that splits the tablets using a razor blade. This kept the bulk of the shrapnel within the box & kept the pieces from flying off the counter–win win! Oh & the “V” shaped, sloped channel helps to pretty evenly divide the tablets as long as they don’t try to make their escape as the blade descends, Pit & the Pendulum style…
What state are you in, if you don’t mind me asking? Does the delivery location for an online purchase (from Sam’s for instance) impact whether you can receive a shipment of supplies or not? Seems strange that they would be out of stock online but still (at least somewhat) in stock in local stores, well around here anyways…

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

I have the same pill cutter, LOL!! Really helps a lot with one of my meds that crumbles easily, I need all that shrapnel! 😀
I’m in Houston,Texas area – online and in stores, Sam’s brand is completely unavailable
Only charmin available in 2 stores near me, all other brands were out of stock in store – there must’ve been a raid. Costcos were hit pretty hard too.
I’m good on supply for a while but will need in a few weeks. I’d just rather be totally stocked in case things go south. Will keep watching web, don’t want to make an unnecessary trip and not score.

Valerie Curren

Don’t mess with Texas!!! 🙂

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

Amen!!

Sylvia Avery

I live an hour’s drive from the outbreak and deaths in Washington.
I had done most of my shopping for the virus weeks ago when we first started talking about it here. I researched vitamins and supplements that are supposed to enhance immune function and started taking them then, too. However, it has been long enough ago that I needed to resupply, so I went out and took care of that today.
Nothing noticeable. Cold products were prominently displayed on endcaps. One type of vitamin C was low, but everything else was stocked. TP was well supplied. So were canned goods. I heard one person asking about masks and they were told there aren’t any. Other than that, there were not crowds or panicked buying. Business as usual. I’m told that vitamin C was low in the local Walmart.
I keep thinking about the city where the deaths occurred, and the fire station being closed and 27 of their firefighters and 2 of their cops quarantined, and one of the strapping young healthy firefighters having symptoms……I think about the impact of the quarantine…..the stress on services. That concerns me.
I’m pretty self reliant. I don’t tend to need or want much in the way of services. If I can possibly handle it myself, I will. I hope that if I get the virus I’m able to do just that. I do NOT want to have to go to the clinic or the hospital……..all those sick people! Eek! I think I’ll go take another vitamin C……

Sylvia Avery

There were reports that the Costco in the city where the deaths occurred was “Black Friday Busy” this weekend. I’m not surprised.
TBH, I’m not sure it has really sunk in for most people what it means that the virus has been out there circulating for about six weeks.
I was really relieved that I could easily get the cold and flu products that I usually get if I get sick. All at one store, no shortages. I did intend to pick up a new fever thermometer and forgot to do that……..

Sylvia Avery

I did what I knew would be good to stock up on earlier, but some stuff I had used up and needed to restock and then some things occurred to me later, like having cold medicine, cough syrup, nasal spray, cough drops, Kleenex. I was really worried that my specific cold medicine would be gone, so it was a relief to find the shelves full. Now I need to restock on dog food and see if I can get a thermometer, and then I can most likely hibernate until it’s over. I think I’ll be glad to have that luxury to just stay home.

Alison

Thanks for the reminder on thermometer. I meant to get one and forgot. Will do that today!

Sylvia Avery

I was pleasantly surprised, Wolfie. I expected to find things picked over or nearly empty shelves. It was completely business as usual.

grandmaintexas

I have a pregnant daughter. We are possibly anticipating a home birth. Any advice is much appreciated.

grandmaintexas

I pray so. This is her 4th, so she isn’t inexperienced, but we are hoping things are under control by July.

Aubergine

Does she have a midwife or doula? If not, you should find one, just in case. They might be getting busy if this thing were to explode. I agree with Wolf, I WOULD NOT want to go to a hospital.

grandmaintexas

Great idea. Why didn’t I think of that? I had my first two children with a midwife!
Will check into that. Thank you so much, Aubergine.

Valerie Curren

Perhaps look into a nurse-midwife or a dueola (sp?) to assist the process. Blessings on this blessing from the Lord!

grandmaintexas

You and my daughter were way ahead of me. I mentioned that to her today and she has already been looking into it. Great idea. Thanks. 😄

Valerie Curren

Wonderful! I hope her delivery goes smoothly & she & the baby do just fine.
For some reason I was rather fearful surrounding my 3rd pregnancy & delivery (4th kid for P #2 was twins) so I looked up a lot of comforting scripture verses & gathered a collection of relaxing music & worship songs as prep for labor. That process actually eased my mind, even though we forgot to bring it all to the hospital when we went. 🙂
Congratulations on your Joyful News!!!

My opinion:
A motel for Wuhan/SARS2 Coronavirus quarantine is the same kind of “human biolab experiment” that the Diamond Princess was, just that the motel is on dry land.
And — Evergreen Medical Center — betcha there are NO BSL-3 or BSL-4 level biocontainment units at this facility. Regular Isolation units or even ICU is not the place for very elderly people who get lung infections / viral infections. All 6 of the infected patients who died at Evergreen were from the nursing home.

Volgarian8301

Something that has been niggling in my brain about those nursing home patients….elderly, debilitated, chronically ill, possibly dying from any of the above….did WooWooFlu cause those deaths, 😷or was it a convenient catch all to promote the narrative of panic? Inquiring minds and all that 🤷

Great thread!

I hope you have as smooth and easy a shopping trip as I did!!!! It was very reassuring to see that the shelves were full and I could get what I needed.

Sylvia, I was also encouraged by the logic of not shopping on Mondays. My trip should be pretty good. thanks.

I live in the middle of Silicon Valley, near the interchange of I-280 and I-880. Intel, HP, Apple, Google, SuperMicro, AMD, Cypress Semiconductor, and many other corporations are headquartered around here. We have major facilities for Chinese companies like Huawei. There is a lot of transpacific traffic.
On a recent run up a major street (about a week ago), I saw three people wearing masks. However, a year ago it would not be all that unusual to see someone wearing a mask. During the major fires that made the air very foul, masks would not be unusual.
We have a major “camping” problem here. It’s not really homeless, as people might actually own houses in Idaho and still camp here. Some streets are lined with RVs, and the freeway areas between the white traffic barriers and sound walls are densely populated with tents. But when a nondescript 3 bed/2 bath house can be $1.2M….
The grocery stores continue to have everything and do everything.

cthulhu

This is from seven years ago — https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2415602/The-Jungle-Inside-Americas-largest-homeless-camp-shadows-Silicon-Valley.html — every year it’s gotten worse.
On the other hand, the Silicon Valley campers are not as frequently perverts, addicts, and mentally ill, like SF has. And some of them show a laudable amount of creativity in making the best of their situation. Other Silicon Valley workers can interact with them — when you’re pulling a late night and someone comes by to empty your cube’s wastebasket, and you hand it over instead of moving out of the way, you’re likely showing courtesy to a “camper”. The Fiancee was a Tech Support Manager for some well-known companies and had staff of no fixed abode.
But none of that stuff meets building and sanitation codes. It clogs up the thoroughfares and occupies the public lands. It’s an intrusion of medieval serfdom into the world’s dream of technological utopia.

cthulhu

Oh, and stores for things not generally needed are half-empty (e.g. bookstores, malls). Everyone is in a “get in, get stuff, get out” mode. They’re not hoarding, as they might for things that are needed.
Places like Home Depot and grocery stores are fully stocked, occupied like they usually are, and have few stockouts.

Yesterday – in one of the biggest Tallahassee Walmarts:
Antibacterial hand soap – small pumps bottles almost gone. Big bottles all gone.
Isopropyl Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide are also sold out
And so are the plastic cans of antibacterial wipes!
Bleach/Chlorox stock was very low.
Customers shopping for law office and other businesses told me – There is no hand sanitizer in the whole city of Tallahassee.
Restocking on these items will be March 5th, 8th and10th.

GA/FL

1. Hand Sanitizer Recipe (found online – multiply for larger quantity)
1 Tablespoon rubbing alcohol
1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin (optional)
1/4 cup aloe vera gel

10 drops cinnamon essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil

Distilled water (colloidal silver/ionic silver adds antibacterial power if available)

Other essential oils (just for scent)

Instructions
Mix aloe vera gel, optional glycerin, and rubbing alcohol in a small bowl.
Add cinnamon essential oil and tea tree oil along with a drop or two of any other oils you want to add for scent.
Mix well and add distilled water (or colloidal/ionic silver) to thin to desired consistency.
Transfer into spray, squeeze or pump bottles.
***IMPORTANT – The more alcohol – the greater effectiveness. 60% alcohol is recommended by CDC. To make this recipe effective against coronavirus – increase alcohol and leave out the water.
– Scented oils are not necessary though tea tree and cinnamon may have slight antibacterial properties.
For tender skin, follow up sanitizer/wipes with a moisturizer or petroleum jelly would be good.
2. MAKE YOUR OWN WIPES – In sealable waterproof container – a plastic jar or ziplock bag – Soak paper towels or clean washcloths in 60%-91% rubbing alcohol.
Use on hands, grocery carts, car keys, car door handles, steering wheel, door knobs, light fixtures, toilet flush, sink faucets.
3. Keep bottles of alcohol and put by sinks.
4. Hand-washing 20-30 seconds with soap and very warm water – dry with clean towel – This is still the best hand sanitizer.

GA/FL

Drat – forgot to close the bold. Need more coffee and covfefe!

I meant to close the bold after CDC.

WHY HAND WASHING – HAND SANITIZERS?
Coronavirus May Be Spreading So Quickly Due to Fecal Transmission, Says New Research
https://www.health.com/condition/infectious-diseases/coronavirus-fecal-transmission
“Essentially, COVID-19 can pass from person to person “if an infected person does not wash their hands properly after using the bathroom,” Jeremy Brown, MD, director of the Office of Emergency Care Research at the National Institutes of Health and author of Influenza: The Hundred-Year Hunt to Cure the Deadliest Disease in History, tells Health. He adds that lots of infections—including Hepatitis, cholera, and viruses that cause gastroenteritis—are also transmitted this way. “
Might be a good idea to use disposable gloves when using public restrooms.

singingsoul1

Also people putting small children with diapers in the shopping cards makes me wonder if they do not change diapers often. I always wipe the sides and the seats in shopping cards.
Often I see children and adults not washing their hands after going to the rest room. I was taught to wash before and after but then my mother was paranoid 🙂
According to my son using those hand sprays do more harm when using often because one kills good bacteria with the bad. Soap and water is the best he tells me.
I always have the hand spray in the purse and spray to wipe things off using a napkin or paper towel.

GA/FL

Thanks for the input, Singing Soul!

Gail Combs

“… I was taught to wash before and after but then my mother was paranoid…..”
Or she was a chemist. A male chemist peeing WITHOUT washing first can be a REAL GOOD Teacher about WHY you wash your hands. 🤣
You learn not to touch your face before washing too.

5. STAY OUT OF PUBLIC REST ROOMS!!!
E.M. Smith said a flush can arosolize a virus for 20 minutes when we learned the virus was in feces. Now we know it also hangs around in pee.
Looks like he was off….

…A toilet flush can release up to 80,000 polluted droplets and leave them suspended a metre in the air for hours if the lid is left up, a new study has found….

6. ‘Social Distance’ is MORE THAN SIX FEET. the CDC is WRONG.
New study:

….It was previously thought that the flu spreads mainly through large particles, or droplets, in the air that travel short distances, from 3 to 6 feet. But the new study showed most flu viruses are found in very small particles in the air, Bischoff said. Smaller particles can travel farther than larger ones, he said. Because the study did not look at distances beyond 6 feet, the researchers cannot say whether the flu virus can travel farther…

That’s fascinating. My kid always told me to lower the toilet seat because it cuts down on germ transmission. Lol ironic that he is the one with that knowledge.

A month ago I bought two toilet seats that close themselves. They were on sale and only $19 we like them much. I do not like to keep seat up because of the animals so we always were aware of sanitation problems.

What does one do when going to the city and lives 2 hours from it one has to use the public restroom and cannot hold it for 8 hours after drinking coffee? One has to be vigilant what facility to use and where. Some places are very clean and use bleach in the tank when one flushes.
Maybe putting a mask on when using public bathroom?

Gail Combs

Pick a place you know is very clean and go at an odd hour. That is why we were in the Hwy 55. They keep the place very clean, (I can smell the clorox) and it is near empty after 1 pm and before 3:30 pm.

…BTW, having lived in dozens of hotels mostly along hwy 192 over the years of contracts at Disney…
FWIW: A big swimming pool tablet (abouf 3 inches) placed in a jar on the night stand, will slowly emit chlorine gas and “freshen” the room, removing a lot of the complex organic crap from the “air freshener sprays” too. Put the lid on before staying a long time in the room and air out as needed to get the chlorine level low enough 🙂 When the tablet slows from age, a few drops of water kick starts it….

You just have to make sure the chlorine gas doesn’t eat all the metal in sight.

grandmaintexas

Quite frankly, I would get a pee bottle and pee in the car. They do sell them.

Volgarian8301

In my line of work you quickly learn where the good ones are. Best tips for public restrooms….line the seat or don’t sit…after you wash hands, use paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door so you avoid touching those surfaces. That’s normal life, no difference there due to WooWooFlu

Valerie Curren

“MAKE YOUR OWN WIPES – In sealable waterproof container – a plastic jar or ziplock bag – Soak paper towels or clean washcloths in 60%-91% rubbing alcohol.”
I used to make homemade diaper wipes by cutting Bounty Select-A-Size towels in half & then cramming the 1/2 cylinder into a round pop-up diaper wipe container (I forget what brand). I think the proportions were 3 cups warm water & 1 1/2 Tb baby oil & 1 1/2 Tb baby shampoo, mixed thoroughly & poured over the paper towels (you would have already removed the cardboard tube by twisting up first & then pull “wipes” from the center of the roll through the dispenser lid).
I guess this method could be adapted for a version of homemade Chlorox-style wipes economically…

Liberals are terrified in Tally. (Tallahassee) I was in the Tally Costco over the weekend and was standing next to older gay couple when a Chinese husband and wife strolled by. One of the guys stared them down and then pronounced “I’m surprised they let “them” in here.” I thought my husband was going to choke.
The Costco seemed to be fully stocked at the time but it was packed and everyone seemed frantic.
But then it’s always like that.
Was in one of Valdosta’s Walmart’s (right off I75) yesterday and did not notice any depletion of stock outside of normal wear and tear,
Later hit the commissary on base and then the dentist. No discussions or panic in and around groups of conversations. Normal day in this military town.

While I was at the Walmart – I was talking to three ladies in the hand soap department.
I mentioned sanitation in Asia and increased ACE 2 receptors in Asians.
One lady said her father had designed and installed sanitation facilities in Asia and there was no sewage in the streets!!!
She said it was clean as the US.
So, I said we have raw sewage in San Francisco now however. (just because)
I forgot to mention bat soup and eating live baby mice.
I could tell they thought I was racist. Heh!
This morning the thought came to me…. It’s entirely possible that some or all of the woman’s father’s sanitation systems have not been maintained and are no longer functional!

plumnelly1

Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world. I don’t doubt her father may have installed a few sewage systems in Japan but seriously she needs to get out her map. India would be a good place for her to start! There are 51 countries in Asia with China and India being the largest. Yeah…India would be great place for her to start.😳😁

A friend used to live in Japan, likely 2+ decades ago, & she said community baths were very common, just segregated by the sexes. There was a rinsing pool, a super hot soaking cleansing pool, a soaping place, & a cooler rinsing off pool, if I recall correctly. This practice would likely spread some types of germs quite widely in a community. Don’t know if it still goes on there, or elsewhere…

Ground report from our house, northern MS.
Big T came home with a cold about a week ago and gave it to me. I have it worse than he did. Hit me Saturday afternoon. My head feels like a big pimple, ready to burst. I want to stick a vacuum up my nose to get rid of the snot. And my stomach muscles feel like I did 600 crunches at the gym from coughing and blowing my nose so much. My eyebrows hurt, my eyes are watery, and I can’t talk on the phone cuz NO ONE can understand me.
I hardly ever get sick, been at least 5yrs, 8yrs, 10yrs….. can’t remember last time.
I am NOT a good patient.
I don’t feel pretty.
So, I spent 12 hours a day working on the COVID thread, convincing myself, I’m headed for death’s door.
What a laugh I got.
Darling husband went to the store to buy me special Kleenex, NyQuil gel caps, and some Vitamin C…… because I think everything is gone and the store shelves are stripped.
Well, he walked into WalMart, first thing, was met with a big display of vitamins, 500 count jars, on sale, 2 for 1. Backside of the massive display was all the cold meds, Kleenex. Further on was big display of bleach, gloves, and cleaners….. on sale.
Wal Mart is making a killing. I’m making chicken soup today. Need long hot showers. If you guys need any vitamin C, hit me up, I’m stocked.

Nasal spray with saline solution would clear up your nose and stuffy feeling in your head. Can be used more frequently than medicinal type sprays but is very effective. Hope you feel better.
I used to get a lot of sinus infections until I was told to use the saline solution – none since then.

Linda K Harrison

BTW – Ocean is another good nasal spray but more expensive. Do not try to make your own – it needs to be purified water or sterile, otherwise you aren’t doing any more than a netti pot which I do no believe in.

Deplorable Patriot

With a neti-pot, you’re supposed to used distilled or purified water. I LOVE it. It’s very gentle compared to the forced methods, and works like a charm for me.

Linda K Harrison

I would stick with the nasal spray – it generally can’t kill you like a netti pot can.

Deplorable Patriot

How can a neti pot kill you if the water is clean? I’ve been using one for over ten years, and haven’t had a problem yet.

Linda K Harrison

The people who are accustomed to using them and thoroughly clean them probably would never have a problem. There are people who have used “tap” water and picked up an amoeba that got into their brain and killed them (New Orleans area).
I just prefer to purchase something that is made for that purpose like an over the counter nasal spray (to me it is just safer).

Deplorable Patriot

Far enough north where we don’t have such creatures in the water and it is not an issue. Of course…where I live, we get our water from the most thorough water treatment facility in the country, so it is not a problem.

Deplorable Patriot

I’m a neti-pot girl, but yes. nasal saline is the best to get the snot out.

daughnworks247

We have one of those little machines. It’s discomforting, but WOW it does work.

Deplorable Patriot

What you need is REST! I coughed straight through December and January. Rest and time is what took care of it…and whiskey for the cough. I don’t do over the counters as they give me sinus infections.

Gail Combs

Daughn, I find a VERY HOT wash cloth on my nose and sinuses really helps. (Nasal sprays or anything like that causes my nose to protest violently shutting down the passages completely.)
Remember flu virus does not like HOT and MOIST. (Hot tea helps too.)

The Flu Likes Cold, Dry Weather
….Now that Palese had a model organism, he was able to begin experiments to get to the bottom of the flu season. He decided to first test whether or not the flu is transmitted better in a cold, dry climate than a warm, humid one. To test this, Palese infected batches of guinea pigs and placed them in cages adjacent to uninfected guinea pigs to allow the virus to spread from one cage to the other. The pairs of guinea pig cages were kept at varying temperatures (41°F, 68°F, and 86°F) and humidity (20%-80%). Palese found that the virus was transmitted better at low temperatures and low humidity than at high temperatures and high humidity…
The study tested the survival time of different viruses (i.e. the amount of time the virus remains viable and capable of causing disease) at contrasting temperatures and levels of humidity. The results from the study suggest that influenza actually survives longer at low humidity and low temperatures. At 43°F with very low humidity, most of the virus was able to survive more than 23 hours, whereas at high humidity and a temperature of 90°F, survival was diminished at even one hour into incubation…
http://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2014/the-reason-for-the-season-why-flu-strikes-in-winter/

Deplorable Patriot

And one of the reasons to have humidifiers running in the house during the winter.
Can’t get that through a few skin flint heads in this family.

Gail Combs

We use the portable radiators in the rooms we want warm. I sit a pyrex pan full of water on each one. Works like a charm. I let them go to dryness before refilling to kill any bugs. It saves money since you do not have to heat the whole house and I found I don’t have to use moisturizer in the winter any more.
Of course I then have to use vinegar to get the limestone dissolved…

GA/FL

Would distilled water leave a lime residue?

Gail Combs

Agreed wolfie. I am using well water that is full of minerals. Distilled water should have NO minerals dissolved in it. Just some CO2. That is why it is used in car batteries.

Katie

Sorry to hear you’ve got the crud, Daughn.
This is what I use and have recommended to dozens and dozens of people, all who thank me profusely for telling them about the world’s best kept secret. The latest one was a pilot for UA, who had a sinus infection and now wants to nominate me for a citizen’s award for the relief it provided.
http://www.alkalolcompany.com/
Alkalol has been around since 1896, and you can buy it at larger grocery stores Rx, Walgreen’s, Amazon, etc. I mix it with 50/50 hot water in their little nasal ‘pipe’, or you can use a nettie pot. It’ll flush out the gunk, open up your sinuses and help you breathe. Use it 3 – 4 times a day until you feel better, then another week of once a day to make sure it doesn’t come back.
I’m also prone to bronchitis now that I’ve had it twice, and for the cough I’ve found the most effective thing is a Himalayan Salt dry inhaler. Himalayan salt is anti viral, anti bacterial and clears up the cough better than any medication I’ve tried. You can use it while you’re reading the blog…you inhale from your mouth through the device, exhale through your nose. Takes about 15 mins, twice a day.
This is cheap, effective, and easy to keep on hand. I’m including this link from Amazon (I try to avoid them whenever possible) to show you what one looks like. You want a ceramic version, and the larger chunks of Himalayan salt crystals – you can buy a huge container of that from Costco for less than $10.

These two natural methods WILL help. I promise!!

Alison

I can vouch for Katie’s recommendation on Alkolol.
Hope you feel better soon, Daughn 💖

I know what you mean about spending too much time on the topic. You can easily get inside your own head and it’s a constant battle to talk down the bad thoughts. Thus the potential fear and constant brain power to cast it down can weaken your defenses. I find it necessary to walk away for a few days, but still stay headline informed. Please take care of yourself MQ, get some rest. I pray GOD’s miraculous healing power overwhelms you quickly in Jesus’ name. Amen.

” My head feels like a big pimple, ready to burst. I want to stick a vacuum up my nose to get rid of the snot.”
I can relate as I just started the mother of all head colds yesterday. Tonight my husband was practicing his bass in his music room while I was using his computer & the sound waves made me have to keep “clearing” my ears (holding nose & “gently” blowing, like I learned in Scuba to equalize pressure). At one point the shrill squeaking from the one ear releasing pressure was heard by him & our very curious dog, both across the room–yikes. He likes that he can make “the water on my brain” slosh about with his bass!

More about making home made wipes.
I did a little experimenting…. ;8->
Home made wipes:
1. Split sheet paper towels cut length-wise as long as you think they will fit in a jar rolled up.comment image
2. Here are paper towels rolled – inside peanut jar – inside towel up pulled up to tear off as needed –comment image
3. You can separate and fold them individually and place in a small jar. This is a peanut butter jarcomment image
4. Pour alcohol over to soak. Close lid tightly. Alcohol can be saved and used for next batch.

Volgarian8301

The plastic boxes that baby wipes come in can be reused for homemade wipes too. Fill the box with folded paper towels, pour the alcohol in. Can use the same technique for “Clorox wipes”

GA/FL

That is a great tip, Volgarian! I guess I should have saved the Fresh Ones wipe can to put some of my homemade wipes into.
However, they do leak if turned upside down unlike a peanut jar. I put a small travel cosmetic squirt bottle of alcohol in my purse and a peanut butter jar of alcohol wipes in my car. I put a pump bottle of alcohol on the back door sink and one in the kitchen.
Moreover, I’m laughing at myself a lot over this, because I know I won’t be able to discipline myself to total germ/virus control in my house or auto or or on my body when I am home or go out.
Even if I had training in infection control and lacking discipline, and the presence of mind/awareness to maintain germ control, all the hand washing, sanitary laundry, and all the wipes in the world won’t stop an airborne virus! >:8-]

Straight alcohol or mix of alcohol and glycerine/aloe – CDC says it must be 60% alcohol or higher to be effective against coronavirus.
Here is an assortment of bottles – pump, spray and sqeeze to fill with alcohol.comment image

Don’t forget – you have a very flammable concoction (with 91% alcohol).

GA/FL

THANKS FOR THE TIP – I don’t smoke and don’t have an open fireplace. I’ll be careful in the kitchen when the cooktop and oven are on.

Cuppa Covfefe

Keep it in the dark, too… the sun, combined with a closed top, could make it ignite…
I use high-percentage alcohol as a cleaner for CPUs, etc., when I’m tinkering, and the brown bottle which this came in was rife with stickers, etc., and various warnings about flammability. I also have a few bottles of Sterillium (profi hand scrub) and they also have a high flammability index. But they kill just about every bug you throw them at.
Maybe it’ll work on Windoze 1 0… (aka 10)…

GA/FL

I had forgotten rubbing alcohol is flammable.
You can actually make a homemade heater/stove with a coffee can, a roll of toilet paper and a bottle of rubbing alcohol!

Kea pretty much summed up the situation here in STL. I’m in what is known as “Mid-County” smack dab in the middle of the metro, and…we got nothin’ different that I can see, not that I’ve been out all that much. The Archdiocese announced precautions this morning for Mass, mainly don’t shake hands at the Sign of Peace, which is an innovation that needs to die, anyway.
That’s really about it. Later today, I need to help out my sister who has a stomach bug that was being passed around her office. I’ll look and see if anything has changed, but I doubt it. We’re headed into tornado season. The camp equipment aisle is going to be rather important coming up here.

Went to 2 grocery stores and my pharmacy here in my little town 13 miles south of Eugene ,Ore yesterday and all shelves were stocked . TP was a little low on the big packages. Vit.C was bogo. Everyone was using wipes on the carts but I’ve noticed shoppers here have been wping carts for a long time ,a lady offered me her cart telling me it’s clean and I’m not sick but I wiped it anyway.ive been carrying Purcell in my car for years having sick kids has taught me the value of washing hands a lot.lol the pharmacy had all my meds available.everything was normal there.and we do have 2 covid cases up north in Portland about 138 miles from my house.yet people here are not in a panic.in fact the folks I talked to think POTUS has it well in hand. Oh and there plenty of gloves and masks on shelves but did not see anyone wearing masks.

Vitamin C is not out but kinda low. The rice aisle was just about bare and so was the beans aisle. Hubby could not find his favorite bread. I bought out the last cans of water chestnuts (and wiped them with Clorox when I got home.)
Toilet paper and kleenex (Scott brand) has been hit and miss lately. Lots of bare shelf space. No masks for weeks. I saw a lot of empty slots. We got all but the last two boxes of cat food. I had to get down on the floor and fish around all the way to the back underneath to get them. The dried cat food also had empty slots.
Either Wally Mart is preferentially supplying Yuppyville or Hicksville is a lot more clued in.
….
Natural remedies/pharmacy: I bought the last Iodoral a week ago. I went back for the nettle leaf and Licorice root. The shelves were picked over with a lot of bare spots.

On the thinking of people in Hicksville vs Yuppyville. Both EM smith and bakocarl added insight

That’s interesting insight. I’m in Germany, and on the German reddit board, stocking up on food (“Hamstern” in German) is now seen as right-wing extremist and people are writing and upvoting hate-posts against people who are stocking up. I was wondering where this attitude comes from.

Independence and freedom, you cant have one without the other.

Agreed – and many people have realized that they want neither, which is why we have a self-described socialist as a top contender for the White House. Don’t get me wrong – I’m no fan of Trump – but the amount of people who expect the state to care for them like a parent to perpetual children is truly terrifying.

I just witnessed the situation becoming rapidly worse in Starnberg, Germany
by u/GS_Hyperios in China_Flu

I am going to post ALL of E.M.s comment since I think it has a lot of baring on the current situation and WHY the Elite want to wipe the older people out.

Early in life I got used to people in authority catching up later. (Or being overrun by events). Also learned that those not in authority were often more wise. In my small farm town, there was a park across the street from our restaurant. I’d play there and “old folks” would sit on the benches. We would talk. Some were in their 90s.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but in addition to the entertainment value for both of us, they were often passing on what they thought was most important that they had learned or experienced. Stories of W.W. 1 & 2, the Great Depression, being an old Black Man in South America having moved away from The South – then returning, what polio and small pox and the Spanish Flu did to cities, and more. The importance of being prepared for bad times and enjoying the good times. In some ways my remembered experience goes back to the late 1800s, by proxy.
Essentially it comes down to NEVER forget your history and NEVER sugar coat it. Remember the hard won basic truths learned over generations. Do not let authority determine truth, for it often lies. To thyne own self, be true.
Then Mum bought a set of history books. Lots of pictures / paintings; and I got fascinated with Natural History. By about age 12, I was already spanning from the 4 billion years back formation of earth into our projected future in space (“Men In Space” was a favorite show). As it was near nothing for a Saturday Movie, for years I watched almost every movie that came to town, many of them historical. Classics like Sparticus and Cleopatra along with accidental histories like B&W B murder mysteries and vaudeville comedies (and every “Road To…” with Bing & Bob 😉
AND I remembered it all.
It makes for a very large information base that tends to stability and new assertions have to integrate into it without major offence to proved truths.
So some “authority” says “you do not need 2 weeks food”, and I “flash” on that chain of memories: Dad at 12 hunting rabbits during The Great Depression, Mum & me in the back yard with a bowl of 1 can tuna w/ mayo and a half dozen crackers as she explained “Now imagine this is all you have for a week! , that is what it is like during war rationing.”, and the Mormon stories of the Plague Of Crickets / Miracle of the Gulls, the Donner Party, folks begging food in The Grapes Of Wrath, MY experience with families living from cars as fruit pickers in the late 50s (not Mexicans, these were post WWII bootstrapping white families deciding whether to eat or fix the flat tire to get to the next job – Dad gave them an old almost worn out tire and some beans), MY Dad teaching me to grow squash at 3 years old (a giant banana squash that got me hooked on gardening forever 🙂 and explaining why it was important to have your own garden “for bad times”, MY Dad bringing home 25 lb bags of beans and rice because that was economical and “it is important to have some stores”, folks begging food in various movies, and more. (Welcome to Aspe Land …)
And the Tidy Mind shouts a silent “Bull Shit” at the screen. For the simple reason that several lifetimes of experience by proxy says you ALWAYS need 2 weeks, preferably 2 months, and a year of food is better, as bad times DO come. Wars. Great Depressions. Plagues. Crop failures. Job losses. Earthquakes. Famine. Invasions. Droughts. Quarateens. And more.
I live in a different world from theirs. They live in a decadal world of perpetual Supermarkets and all knowing benign Authority. I live in a thousand year history of periodic bad times and governmental abuse & collapse, punctuated by occasional good times you must make for yourself.
And I never forget to respect history, mine or by proxy.

I learned that lesson the same way, too . . . with a big one!

Cuppa Covfefe

My wife an son are going up to a town in Hessen (middle of Germany) for a CI (cochlear Implant) information session. They booked this months ago, but today my son got an email saying that they’d be checked for ANY symptoms of Corona, and then tested (which test, I don’t know).
If things look or test a bit dodgy, then they won’t be let into the session (where, among other things, will be auditory nerve testing, so, yes, they need to be well).
The media here are pushing the idea of “Hamsterkauf” occurring all over Germany, but here in the “Wilden Süden” (Baden-Württemberg), it’s not happening so much, even though we live between Göppingen (where at least one case has been diagnosed) and Stuttgart (a couple more?), and Tübingen (at least two).
Worse, my wife and son were in Tübingen last Tuesday, when the infected Professor at Uni Tübingen was leading a conference of professors and senior medical folks…sigh… the conf was in a different building than they were, so we’re hopeful that they didn’t cross paths with the Prof, who, along with his daughter (who gave it to him) are in quarantine. Annnnnd, the daughter was an acquaintance of the fellow in Göppingen, who had been to Italy the week before… this is a little too close for comfort. At least (as far as we know) aren’t in the high-risk groups, e.g. high bp, diabetes, COPD, circ problems, etc. Although my wife and I are in our senior discount years…
Stores here have some empty slots, pasta, some non-perishable foods (flour, beans, etc.), but in general are nowhere near as hard-hit as the fear-mongering media would like. Most shelves are normal, with the weekly stock/sale churn (as normal at ALDI/LIDL/etc.) producing the occasional bare spots.
Hand cleaners and disinfectants (surface cleaners both medical and Lysol-like) are starting to see the occasional shortage, but the stores are doing their utmost to keep stock on hand. Face masks, in contrast, have just about been sold out, even to the point that the building stores (e.g. Hornbach, similar to Home Depot) are out of the simple painter’s masks, which are pretty much useless in any case.
The company mentioned above, Webasto, is the site of the first outbreak, and cluster, of Corona in Germany. A representative from China was here, and unbeknownst to her, infected a team at the company, which in turn affected others. I hope and pray that they all recover soon. Sales demos and team projects seem to be a high-risk endeavor right now.
Here’s hoping and praying that Corona is like the flu, and fades with warmer weather. This winter has been particularly mild, and right now it’s quite wet, but not very cold (hence almost NO snow this year).

good nugget of importance in yr comment: wipe down, sanitize the hard surfaces of the products you purchase, when you get home.
also…remove yr outside shoes…clean the soles…avoid outside shoes throughout the house….esp if you have any carpeting (yuk)….

also….not joking…when shopping …don’t choose the items right up front on the shelves where all germs have setlled…reach back into the other items that are behind the germ-infested front rows !
choose carefully.
if someone…anyone…is standing there coughing, sneezing… run …avoid those products !
push ppl with yr elbows, shoulders, hips…not with yr hands or heads !

For shoes, use shoes or boots with thick rubber soles. Yo can then use a kitty litter pan with a bit of water and bleach at the entrance to step in to sanitize the soles of your shoes. If they are slip on you can leave them there to soak as you step into your house slippers.

ladypenquin

I’m in Southeastern Virginia. No confirmed cases yet. Wall Street Journal (globalist commies) makes sure to front page the number of deaths. Today’s paper indicates “6”.
We have 330+ million people in America… Corona virus reporting is being used as a political weapon against President Trump. They did the same against Bush with the bird flu vaccine issues in 2005. Vaccine manufacturing shortages were the focus – they yelled then about our inability to supply vaccines, yet today, our meds are outsourced.
I work as an RN in a homeless clinic. Our biggest concern is influenza. Flu. Every year, hundreds, thousands die in this country/world from complications of the flu.
This is all about perspective. When it suits the Dems to focus on a potential public health issue – they do – during GOP administrations. When a Democrat is in charge, almost nothing is said, and certainly no blame articles running 24/7 in the MSM.
Take the usual precautions to keep from getting any bugs from other folks. Hand washing, disposable kleenex. Disinfectant wipes on surfaces. BTW, if you use a hand sanitizer, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after several uses. Do not depend strictly on a sanitizer. Good hand-washing remains the best preventative measure.
Densely populated areas like NYC will see scenes like Costco had yesterday.
In Tidewater, Va. our shelves clear whenever there’s word of a hurricane coming our way. This makes me think to keep a stash of TP so it’s not a problem when the shelves clear.

MAGA Mom

Costco in TN running out of things too.
bathroom tissue – yes, stocking up for problems in case of supply chain issues if virus becomes wide spread but also stocking up in case of panic buying. We have been increasing slowly so not to panic buy but to increase our rotating stock.
Now or in future – consider a bidet attachment to toilet so need less bathroom tissue and are cleaner. We LOVE ours and would never go back. Cleaner, less flushing, less bathroom tissue used. Saves us $ over long run + we now Greatly prefer it! Bought as a prepper type investment – less bathroom tissue needed in an urgent situation and did Not want to have cloth wipes for #2/BMs. #1 is kind of ok if cloth wipes are needed but for a #2? No thanks! Bidet attachment and now less bathroom tissue …. and So much cleaner!

Volgarian8301

Good point about the hand washing after several uses of hand sanitizer. Hand washing is best, as there are bugs that are more resistant than others. Using the hand sanitizer CORRECTLY is important too….not just a little squirt. Hands need to be wet with the sanitizer and then rubbed until dry for maximum benefit.
Perspective….there is 4x the number of people dead from the Nashville tornado as there are from WooWooFlu

ladypenquin

Yes. It is all about perspective. The malignant media waited with baited breath to report bad news against President Trump. He’s beat them at every turn.
POTUS calls the the MSM “Fake News”, “Enemy of the People” – I call them malignant media (quite fitting re: the virus news) but they’re really a National Security threat… intentionally trying to harm this country by interfering in her affairs. That’s dangerous. There ought to be a way to deal with them along those lines – security issues.

ladypenquin

One other suggestion. Please be sure to take Vitamin D. Vitamin D is all about the immune system. Americans, unknowingly, are deficient, doesn’t matter how much you’re out in the sun, out bodies don’t process it as we age.
So get a blood level done, and make sure your level is near 50. If your number is 35 and your doc says that’s fine… no, that’s the low end of the range and not optimal. Europe likes their folks 60-70.

And vitamin K2
Vitamin D3 and K2: The Immune-Boosting Combo

….Although vitamin K2 is one of the lesser known vitamins, it is extremely important for the optimal function of D3. In fact to some extent, vitamin D3 would be dangerous if not taken together with K2.
Although there are still very few research studies on the Vitamin D3 and K2 combo, D3 is one of the more popular vitamins considered as a potent solution to a number of conditions. K2, on the other hand, is the new kid on the block. Having said that, sufficient evidence still suggests that these two vitamins work best together and whatever good things D3 can do to or body still stands and, in fact, may even be reinforced with the addition of K2….

Good gut bacteria can turn K1 (leafy greens like spinach, kale and Bok Choy… YUM!) into K2

Cuppa Covfefe

Vitamin K, though, is a big problem for folks on Coumadin (blood thinner). Not sure if it affects those using Heparin (if that’s available as a tablet) or other types. Sad thing is, folks on those meds might be in a higher risk category due to that…
Here in Germany (and progressively more as you go north), we have a huge problem with Vitamin D deficiency. Add to that the lack of Iodine in our fruits/veggies, especially in the area around the Black Forest, and we’re a supplement-supplier’s dream come true…
Vitamin D³ is available in large doses; Iodine (Jod) is all but impossible to find except as in combination with other vitamins 🙁 And there’s no way I’m using that much salt… Big Pharma have things locked up pretty well (for them) over here…

Gail Combs

That is why a lot of us fought like crazy against Codex Alimentarius…. And managed to win. It is one thing where the rank and file left and right agreed. KEEP YOUR DIRTY MITTS OFF OUR VITAMINS AND HERBALS!!!

grandmaintexas

Abso-effing-lutely.
Excuse my language.

Gail Combs

Yeah, they have hubby on warfarin and he has to be careful eating spinach and kale because of the K.
He has been eating Bok Choy several times a week while they were adjusting his level so that is not a problem. (He is getting his K doctor or no. 🤣 …. Well the doctor didn’t say no bok choy just spinach and kale.
I dump bok choy into soups and stir fries all the time. It is the one cabbage I really like.

Volgarian8301

Keep the vit K intake consistent and warfarin levels can be adjusted accordingly. The problem with vit K intake with warfarin/coumadin is when it is an occasional big intake of kale or spinach etc. If you maintain consistency, the warfarin dosage can be adjusted to stay therapeutic.

The wellness doctor/cardiologist I now see is a huge proponent of Vit. C.,D, B-complex and fish oil.
I, too, am a recent convert to the 2x a day saline nose spray and am quite convinced it has helped me avoid the “nasties” so far this winter.
So much of maintaining a healthy immune system to help your body fight every day assaults us common sense, isn’t it?

Agree. The nasal saline nose spray twice a day, without fail, whether sick or not, is very helpful. One of the best preventative measures out there.

And the recommendations for how much Vitamin D to take just keep rising. I live in Montana, we never get enough sun even in summer, because of the angle. It is too far south. I take 15,000 I.U. daily.

ladypenquin

Aubergine, I don’t know what your baseline level is. But usually if someone is deficient, they do high dosing, 50,000 for six weeks, then get a blood level, and if corrected, 2,000 units daily usually does the job. Some people don’t hold their levels, so it’s worth checking.
Your doc can order Vitamin D levels, 25(OH)D is the test, or you can get it done on your own, using MYLABS. Com – inexpensive lab testing.

Aubergine

I’ve had the testing. I was fine until I hit fifty, then chronically low. I know quite a few people taking more D than I do. We just don’t get the sunshine here.
It’s funny, but the way I figured it out was in my garden. I accidentally planted some hellebores in full sun. They are said to prefer full shade, but mine did great! That’s when I realized that “full sun” in Montana isn’t really.

TN
Costco yesterday evening, completely out of bathroom tissue. Ran out over the weekend. Received stock that morning – gone by afterwork hours (4ish). Clorox wipes – 100% out. Much stock is running low. Putting limits on how many of things you can buy like clorox wipes and still out.
thought we would stock up on a few things – our bulk order places, out of stock
took some time to shop on amazon about 3 weeks ago. happened to check prices again on same masks we bought then – prices are Up and they are out of stock.
Put some stuff in my cart for amazon to buy after pay day…now Out. I was being a bit casual. Should have moved faster. Things like dehydrated foods are selling out on amazon, esp. the ones I wanted.
Examples of things I had in my cart for pay day:
Goat milk powder – out and no in stock date

out until mid month (not organic)

Sambucol – out on our usual ordering sites (Vitacost) I have elderberries on hand but sometimes want pre-prepared mix that is standarized
I took inventory of our herbal teas and essential oils, placing an order of what we are out of and/or low on – esp. those that pertain to immune system, virus and the symptoms associated with the virus. Still won’t order/buy/have Everything we want but focused buying. If it weren’t for the virus, would have not bought full order now but slower and over time – esp. of the herbal teas. So pushing our budget a bit because of virus.
Same with groceries. We started buy a little extra and pushing our budget. If no crisis, eat stocks back down to normal levels and budget evens out. If crisis still eat stocks down and not spending grocery money so budget evens back out. We bought two bathroom tissues last month when we didn’t need them. Now will maintain that extra level. So not really stockpiling, just a little extra to tide us over.
We sat down and thought about manufactured things that we buy as consumables on a regular basis and have bought a little extra in case of supply chain disruptions or we don’t want to go out to store. Dog & Cat food, dental floss, vinegar and baking soda, shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, garbage bags…basically, body care, household cleaners and food (not much with the food as we usually just buy ingredients).
We are buying nothing we won’t use anyway, over time, in normal life, daily or for camping, etc. Just buying a bit more now in case of disruptions of store openings, of supply chains, and in case too many cases in our area and we don’t want to go to the store/be in public. And buying some canned soups and a few ready made things in case we don’t feel well but need/want soup, broth, etc. (we don’t usually buy anything pre-made due to health restrictions on ingredients as we avoid all “natural flavorings”, soy and canola oil, and additional costs of not making from scratch).
People beginning to ask each other in casual conversations if they are doing anything to prep or ahead of the virus. Conversations at husband’s office over the last several days. White collar, upper management, mix of conservative and liberal are talking about it and asking each other what they are doing to prepare. His company has Not started encouraging or requiring or allowing work from home. He is on same work in office/telecommute ratio as always. Major healthcare company – you would think they would know, right?
So that is what we are doing and Yes we are seeing differences in availability of product. No disruptions of supply chains or actual illness or in patterns of other behaviors (besides buying – we have changed and so have most other people’s)
personally, we have been eating more garlic, being that much more faithful with personal hygiene/hand sanitizer and hand washing, and with our supplements, took a little longer to let son go in public after a virus in Feb, eating Much more ferments daily, making sure we have homemade ferments, broths, drinking our herbal teas. We still went to a big conference this weekend in town, doing same/usual routine.
OK – so that is what we are doing, what we are seeing and what we are hearing. I am still planning GOP events as if there will not be wide spread staying at home &/or sickness.
(wish we had a bigger budget to really prep but we do some & our biggest investment was to move to the country which makes our budget tighter but is better than living in town – several years ago we figured better to live out here with less “stuff” stockpiled than in town with more “stuff”…decisions!)

MAGA Mom

Costco was very low on paper towels too. Just remembered that.

In “over-the-hump-in-Pahrump”, I went by the “Cold & Flu” section of WalMart. Everything except the Robitussin section was in good supply. The Robitussin products were completely gone . . . every one.
A word of caution. I saw a lady looking for products in the Cold & Flu section, coughing and hacking (a wet cough) all over everything in that section, not covering her mouth at all. I guess it should be only expected that the Cold & Flu products in sections of any store would be thoroughly contaminated.

MAGA Mom

Good point – many who shop for medicine are sick. Order online, even from amazon as maybe lessens the chances of a sick person coughing all over it while on the shelf

Recent studies show the viruses CAN spread efficiently via Aerosols
(to bad the studies on surface transmission via Fomites do not agree.)
Transmission of Influenza Virus via Aerosols and Fomites in the Guinea Pig Model
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4180291/

ABSTRACT
…..Person-to-person transmission is central to seasonal and pandemic spread; nevertheless, the modes of spread are a matter of ongoing debate. Resolution of this discussion is paramount to the development of effective control measures in health care and community settings. Using the guinea pig model, we demonstrated that transmission of influenza A/Panama/2007/1999 (H3N2) virus through the air is efficient, compared with spread through contaminated environmental surfaces (fomites)….
Infectious aerosols consist of large respiratory droplets and droplet nuclei. Large respiratory droplets are >5–10 µm in diameter and are involved in short-range transmission. Droplet nuclei are <5 µm and are responsible for transmission over greater distances (long-range or airborne transmission)…

In short breathing in droplets were more efficient at spreading disease in guinea pigs compared to fomites. On the other hand pigs do not have hands…

I wonder if Vick’s VapO’Rub in a vaporizer that is tented would work, like we used to do in the old days? Vick’s would surely break up the mucus. To do it at home you would have to do it early on and not wait too long for the virus to progress.

My thoughts, too. I have a lot of that on hand, just in case. I remember how that used to help us as kids.

Guaifenesin is indicated as an expectorant in the temporary symptomatic management of cough due to minor upper respiratory infections and related conditions, such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, and bronchitis, when these conditions are complicated by viscous mucus and congestion. However, because supporting data are very limited, there is some controversy about its effectiveness. /Included in US product label/

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) article describing three deaths in U.S. infants aged less than 12 months associated with cough and cold medications /including guaifenesen/. These medications were determined by medical examiners or coroners to be the underlying cause of death. The cases described in this report underscore the need for clinicians to use caution when prescribing and caregivers to use caution when administering cough and cold medications to children aged less than 2 years.
Guaifenesin is categorized as an expectorant that acts by enhancing the output of phlegm (sputum) and bronchial secretions via decreasing the adhesiveness and surface tension of such material [F4516]. Furthermore, guaifenesin elicits an increased flow of less viscous gastric secretions that subsequently promote ciliary action – all actions that ultimately change dry, unproductive coughing to coughs that are more productive and less frequent [F4516]. Essentially, by decreasing the viscosity and adhesiveness of such secretions, guaifenesin enhances the efficacy of mucociliary activity in removing accumulated secretions from the upper and lower airway [F4516].
DrugBank
Guaifenesin is a glyceryl guaiacolate with expectorant effects. Guaifenesin increases respiratory tract mucus secretions, acts as an irritant to gastric vagal receptors and recruits efferent parasympathetic reflexes that cause glandular exocytosis. This agent reduces the viscosity of mucus secretion by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension as well as increasing hydration of mucus. Guaifenesin promotes the efficiency of the mucociliary mechanism important in removing accumulated secretions from the upper and lower airway….

Used a tissue to handle my credit card in and out of the payment machine. Used a knuckle to sign the Approval screen. (My signature of course was unrecognizable, but the credit card companies don’t care. I read a story online a few years ago about a person who decided to sign “Santa Claus” for a week on the Approval screen when he used his credit cards. Apparently all of the “Santa Claus” signatures went through, not questioned. Maybe the signatures weren’t very clear….)
Used a couple fresh tissues to open the door of the clinic to leave and to open my car door.
Used hand sanitizer once I got into my car. Removed the mask. Wiped down the steering wheel and the console gear shift with hand sanitizer.
Washed my hands thoroughly when I got back to the house.

Deplorable Patriot

Okay, back from mission of mercy for my sister who is running a fever…and traveled last week and got dehydrated.
Walgreens: everything stocked up. A lot of vitamins buy one get one half off.
Grocery, everything stocked up, but extra hand sanitizer around.
Stayed a number of feet away from my sister when I dropped off her bag, came home and got in the shower. Cross your fingers, I really have too much to do to get the flu.

Speaking of germs

gil00

Nasty. People that lick their fingers like that usually have poor manners in other areas.

He probably doesn’t wash his hands after going to the urinal.

Why do you think he’s licking his fingers? Hmmmmmm?

My rpt from Walmart supercenter yesterday. All the dm cough syruo gone. All Clorox wipes gone. Bleach low. Tp, paper towels low. Packaged convenience foods were low, from all areas. Just my cashier had a face mask.
Kiddo’s school sent a notice that no changes are being made, just follow traditional sick kid rules.
Im out today but so far no significant changes.

I was at a closing with 2 wives of UPS Pilots! One Fly’s international and one is domestic. International guy said Pilots flying into China and other infected areas get More Pay–All Voluntary ! He volunteers! Said he’s not worried! Doesn’t even get out of the cockpit most trips…to WUHAN! He said the international flights are down so he’s enjoying more airspace! Flights coming back in land in Alaska and unload and get “sanitized” and then back to Louisville!

At this time, there are NO Trump MAGA/KAG Rallies scheduled!
https://www.donaldjtrump.com/events/
There still are local volunteer training events and MAGA Meet-ups scheduled – which can be cancelled if the area has a large number of COVID-19 cases and the Trump campaign sees fit.
However – renting a YUGE arena and having to cancel due to an outbreak would be expensive and our half-Scottish President is too careful with campaign funds to risk losing all that money.

GA/FL

Our President just donated his salary to the coronavirus response!

🦋🤸‍♀️🦋bflyjesusgrl🦋🤸‍♀️🦋

Then you have that Dem wacko threatening to catch it and infect MAGA rallies. What the Heck is wrong with her? Evil and Sick.

GA/FL

That came to mind, Butterfly. Wondering if there have been other such threats….

Went shopping everything fully stocked.
Only place I heard talk of the Coronavirus was at bath and body works because they were limiting 20 items. Other than that not a hint anywhere.

Correct.
Regarding the elderly in general — it may be helpful for healthy people in their “golden years” to think about self-isolation at home. Let alone those who have a condition, live at home but are, for example, getting IV chemotherapy at a hospital.
It’s a complicated issue. It’s easier to put off seeing the grandchildren for awhile, arrange ordering items from Amazon Pantry, getting Rx meds sent to you, reschedule that filling the dentist says you need, etc. However, it’s likely not possible to put off getting treatments that are only available in a clinical setting.
And there’s the aspect of getting exercise, keeping one’s spirits up, and so on.
Having said this: since I am a member of the “golden years club”, I have decided that if the virus gets within 100 miles of my home, I may well go into lockdown..

bakocarl

“if the virus gets within 100 miles of my home, I may well go into lockdown.” . . . Those plans resemble us fairly closely . . . we be ready!

MAGA Mom

Butterflyexpress.net is an essential oils maker and seller I have mentioned here before.
Called them today because I forgot my password. They are inundated with orders. Probably many like me getting low on some and out of others and have been meaning to place and order but now getting ‘er done.

Haven’t read any other posts yet, but this is what I’ve heard in our area.
*American contractors who worked in China have been cleared and are now living in our county.
*We have over 50 individuals in the next county over who are self-quarantined.
*Hospital personnel are wearing N95 masks that they had to buy new, after throwing out thousands of them from the last flu scare.
My local stores are not out of anything right now. N95 masks are hard to find, but I look for them every time I shop and have scored a good number.
*Yes, hand sanitizer and wipes are being promoted at the stores.
*Friends who were not concerned a week ago are now prepping. This includes three medical personnel that I know.
*People ARE wearing masks in the larger city next to us. If someone coughs, people move away. I have seen a couple people wearing masks in my small town of less than 10,000.
*The local Headstart program sent home a FEMA brochure on being ready for a pandemic or terrorist attack.
I think most people in my area are woefully unprepared, which is why we are out of nothing. I am taking advantage of the well stocked shelves.

grandmaintexas

So grateful for the Q tree!!

mental clarity, emotional stableness and spiritual strength are important.
but sometimes easier said than done.
I panicked earlier today. Had made plans and yet didn’t place my orders as was waiting for pay day and husband and I to sit down and go over things together.
One sources is now 100% unavailable – herbal teas and blends very specific to symptoms of Wuhan. Destroyed by tornado last night. Everyone fine and their business gone so no, my not being able to buy their product is not the disaster. However, was planning on husband going by this afternoon or Thursday to stock. Waiting for him to go in person so we didn’t waste the $14 in shipping. 🙁 Now must find new sources and/or buy single ingredients to blend my own.
I order from Mtn Rose … but they are in Oregon and near Washington…anyone visit Washington lately that is doing the shipping? Plus Mtn Rose doesn’t have the blends, is more expensive and has very expensive shipping.
Was planning on fortifying panty with items from amazon. Completely out. Now must make new plans and can’t find other sources for the few items I was going to buy. (organic/all natural powdered goat milk, eggs, chicken and beef and some organic freeze dried veggies)
So…I was too slow and completely began to panic. Very upset. Prayed, praise and worship, adjusted and calmed. But eye opening to a) get ‘er done and b) stay spiritually strong.
My faith and hope are not in the specific teas, or sources, but in Him. And yet if He is the one leading me to prepare, did I miss the boat? No, just get back on the beam and trust and have faith … which includes action.
Despite me being the one going through it today, I found it interesting to realize that despite being informed and already reasonably well prepared I still got overwhelmed and panicky/stressed. I know better and yet…
Anyway, now to get my orders placed and at this point will wipe the items down with disinfectant when they arrive.
Any suggestions other than Mtn Rose for herbal teas?

Carson City, NV
No gloves or hand sanitizer seen today.
COSTCO – Everything well stocked, except rice. They normally stock four pallet spaces with four types of rice, packaging sizes between 20 lbs and 50 lbs. They only had one “premium” rice. Whatever the hell that is.
WALMART – Pretty well stocked. Vitamins had lots of gaps, but named brands and alternate quantities appeared available. Except vitamin C not seen. OTC meds the same. Gaps, but alternatives seem available.
Food and paper goods well stocked. cleaning supplies pretty well picked over. Bleach and laundry soap low or gone. Maybe these items are China supply sensitive.
Odd ball comment. Past week or so at Walmart…
– The books area is thinning with large gaps. Maybe books are printed in China. Dunno.
– While Walmart may be shifting to spring products, across the store lots of empty shelves. Begging for China centric crap? Dunno.
SMITH’S (supermarket) – Well stocked across the store. Only exception is Imodium products now available at customer service.
General comments. IMO, for Tuesday morning, lots of shoppers. Sort of like a Saturday.
– COSTCO, most shoppers seemed to have plenty of water, TP, paper towels and cleaning supplies in their carts. Saw a couple flat carts quite full. Lots of shoppers here drive in from desert or Sierra’s.
– Walmart and Smith’s most carts half full or less.

Just announced death # 9 in my state from Covid19.
People are clearing the shelves of essentials.
I was able to find toilet paper in the county with most deaths on my way to work. Shelves were pretty bare. The Costco and Walmart near me were pretty much out of many staples.

Things normal here in OK…shelves stocked, on everything, at the Walmart & grocery store where we normally shop.
Not seeing anybody wearing masks, yet.
We try to stay prepped on a lot of things, as part of storm prepping.
May start adding to it and also stocking up on more paper goods, though.
Still have some masks left over from preps for the zombie apocalypse that was supposed to happen in 2012.
😏
It’s a good idea to have some Gatorade and/or Pedialyte on hand.
You can get dehydrated if you’re taking Guaifenesin for chest congestion, for any length of time…or taking antihistamines/decongestants.

Ground Report/Greater Nashville area:
Whole Foods – Fresh produce was very low; didn’t shop most other areas so no other assessment (just after bags of peeled garlic to toss in the freezer and eat daily)
Kroger (supermarket) higher end area (but an hour from our house! ha) – paper products (tp, napkins, paper towels) very Low but not out; dish soap a pretty low but 7th generation was almost gone (husband found that interesting as telling what demographics are stocking up), clorox low, rest of detergents lowish; rest of cleaning products very low; bottle water, low
(this Kroger was farther from tornadoes)
Costco – cashiers are saying this is busier than Christmas.
(as of today tornado relief in the mix as well Wuhan flu “panic”/prepping)
–Bottled Water almost Out
–TP was out yesterday and still out today….truck supposed to come in tomorrow but they said call first and then come in the morning as it will clear out fast even though will be limited 2 per buyer (I think)
–clorox wipes out yesterday and still out today – when they come in will be limited 2 per buyer
–they did have diaper wipes and flushable wipes
–ALL paper products out today … we were going to buy a case of kleenex – gone so should have bought yesterday. Paper towels and napkins, gone, 100% out.
–Baking soda 100% gone
–Salt low – kosher, himalayan was normal amount
–sugar amount seemed normal but they are limiting people to 2 bags each
–Most food stocks were fine; canned fish and canned meat low; fresh meat low – about 1/2 full as usual
–yesterday, eggs were lower than normal but still had plenty…didn’t look today
–veggies & fruit normal; vitamins section was normal; plenty of disposable gloves and q-tips, coffee, etc.
Cashiers telling us its not a supply problem. Its a super demand issue. Much larger demand than usual.
Also mentioned a delivery truck with bathroom tissue (TP) didn’t make it in Monday due to weather somewhere and due to extremely high demand they have now been out for several days. Huge demand so will sell out as soon as more delivered.
No mask wearers spotted at work or 4 errand stops.

Well, I got home from a week-long trip to California less than a week ago. I wore a mask on the plane both ways, saw a handful of others doing the same. I used alcohol wipes on everything in my general vicinity on the planes, too. Hand sanitizer constantly, and hand washing at every opportunity. I never ever touch a door knob bare handed, and always avoid touching railings, etc. too, so that was just habit. I saw one other lady using wipes on her tray table on the plane.
I saw nothing in the way of shortages or panic in Cali. No masks in the area I was in (San Luis Obisbo). Went out to eat, went to a few attractions, no sign of anything wrong. No one seemed very concerned, and I was staying with friends in a SENIOR community. They are 63, but the average age is like 73!
Home now in Montana. No shortages I notice in the grocery or drug stores. I have stocked up on Vitamin C, but there was plenty when I bought it. I always have 25 lbs. of beans, lots of rice, and a freezer full of home grown organic veggies, so I don’t have to go crazy there. I bought a gallon of bleach, extra coffee (gotta have that caffeine!), Lysol, and bleach cleaner. I saw no shortage of those items either.
Most of my friends here, even those in the healing community, don’t seem super worried. We are all big proponents of keeping up the immune system all the time, so most of us do all the good things like vitamins and a healthy diet as a matter of course.

Familiar with San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach – family lived there during the war and we went back to see the old school, homes, etc. where they lived! AND – We ate Clam Chowder and Salmon all the way up the coast from LA to San Francisco one year! The coast is so beautiful and the food so good – that I understood why Californians live amid the earthquakes, mud slides, winds and wildfires!

Aubergine

Yeah, I ate some great food while I was there, in Pismo Beach, too!

A restaurant in Carmel had great food – it was many years ago, but I’m sure it’s still full of gourmet restaurants.

I reported on my normal shopping experience yesterday. (I live an hour’s drive from The Nursing Home of Death in Kirkland, Wa.)
Today, my brother who lives in the same town as I do went to the Safeway (a different grocery store than I went to). He reports no half gallon milk, no ground beef, low TP on shelves, out of hand sanitizer and wipes, gaps on shelves where some items were sold out.

Sylvia Avery

Also he reported an Asian woman in the store wearing a mask.

Teagan

So much more normal for Asians to wear masks…starting with small children….I think we Westerners feel very self-conscious about it.

Hmmm. Still wondering about the possibility of an engineered bioweapon.

MAGA Mom

From insider at healthcare corporation:
–All corp travel 100% stopped – effective Immediately
–employees advised to not go to a hospital unless necessary
–putting in a mask reuse policy in place in medical facilities … :-0
Due to low supplies or forecasted supply chain disruption?
–going to start restricting visitors who are visiting patients with flu like symptoms &/or to visitors in general; restrictions applicable to hospital “visitors” coming…developing situation

Teagan

Regarding supply chain disruptions…I had an appointment with my “wellness doctor”, as I now call him.
I asked him about distruption of meds and he replied that general conversation among his colleagues is they had no idea of what’s coming…that name brand medications will most likely be available, at a higher cost…and it’s generics that might be scarce. BTW, he was more than willing to write a 6 months script for the two medications I was concerned about, so I’m a happy camper.

The attorney is still in the hospital but has been upgraded to Critical but Stable condition.

Back to Costco today…
They now had TP but only their store brand. Of course, local grocery stores still have it but those who shop at costco tend to have larger budgets in order to be able to bulk buy &/or tend to think ahead anyway.

The N&O has a news report on the guy in Raleigh NC. He was in contact with people in other counties but the A$$ES will not NAME the other counties…. GRRRrrrr
https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article240879631.html

….health officials say no one who has been in contact with the Wake County man has shown symptoms or been tested for coronavirus…..
Chris Kippes, director of Wake County’s division of public health, said a number of people within Wake and elsewhere in North Carolina have been asked to voluntarily “self-quarantine” because they had been within 6 feet of the sick patient for at least 10 minutes after he began to show symptoms of illness. At a minimum, those people are being asked to check their temperatures twice a day and report any changes.
County health officials said their contact list would include businesses such as restaurants or retail stores where the patient would have been in close proximity to others for 10 minutes or more.
The patient himself remains in isolation at home.…..

Good grief AFTER he showed symptoms is all they are worried about?
AND within 6 feet for ten minutes?
Do I smell CDC TOO RESTRICTIVE GUIDELINES AGAIN?
The guy was wandering around NC for TEN DAYS and obviously was not only in Raleigh/Wake county. So now I get to watch and wait to see if any more cases sprout up as we head into our busiest business season… OH JOY.
I really want to enlist Sylvia to help me teach a few lessons to the CDC idiots.
