Earlier today, I went by my local computer store (now that Fry’s is gone) and got some specific stuff, but also just looked around.
There was a sign on the hard disks that said, “Due to the high demand for large drives, and the possibility of scalping, we are limiting purchases for everyone except IT professionals and education providers to 10 units or less for 12T and larger drives.”
And I’m thinking, “Oh, Noez!!! I can only spin up 120T at a time!!!”
Incidentally, the specific things I was looking for were fast 32G micro SD chips. I have my little stable of Raspberry Pi’s, and several of them have alternate personalities….
So I just power the victim down, swap out its SD chip, power it back up, and it’s different. It might be running a different version of Linux, it might be running a server, it might be doing all kinds of things….and then I can power it down, swap the SD back, and start right back at doing what it was doing.
Back in the day when I started playing with Pi’s, you could use 4G SD chips. Since I started getting experimental, I was often using 8G. Pi’s had a utility (New Out Of Box Setup — or “NOOBS”) for setting up its initial system that expected to start on a FAT formatted drive, though it ended up as ext4. As such, I wasn’t sure if it would even work with more than 32G.
But it looks like I’m going to find out. They barely sell 32G SD chips any more, and they only cost about $5 each, which is less than what I used to buy the 4G chips for. It looks like they might disappear from stores in another year. Then, again, I normally don’t run Raspbian any more, and I doubt that Ubuntu would balk at any amount of SD I could give it.
I have no problems running Raspberry Pis (RaspiOS/Raspbian, even Devuan and FreeBSD on the 3Bs) here on 64 GB and 128 GB cards. It is just that given the simple jobs most of them do here, they don’t really need that much storage space so it is a little wasteful.
And even if NOOBS uses FAT at the outset, the partition doesn’t need to fill the whole card initially. The installation process does extend the main file system (ext4) to fill the card, at a later stage.
I did not know that last bit. I thought NOOBS had to see everything before it got rolling. Hmmm.
It is somewhat shameful to be dropping 64G on a Linux install — it’s like using a 1.4M floppy to hold a 4K file. Is it better to have a 32G swap partition?
Yes it is that sense of wasting the 64GB card on some headless relay-server thing that uses all of 1.1 GB with the minimal RaspiOs… On the other hand, if there is some kind of data-logging going on, then 64 GB can allow that to go on for a very long time. Which could be nice in some situations.
I’ve never bothered with swap on SD cards. If the job to be done is so heavy or large that there is need for a swap partition, the increased IO on the SD card would be a reliability problem. In which case, I’d use a larger spinning disk with practically unlimited writing ability, for the main filesystem, and depending on the model of the Pi, use the SD-card only for booting, if one is needed at all.
The Ryzen 5950X is still a unicorn. Supposedly, it can compile a Linux kernel in a smidge less than two seconds, with its 16 cores and 32 threads. Even around here, they’re scarce as hen’s teeth (AMD’s HQ is in back of the latest place the Fry’s Sunnyvale store was).

He was saying the things like Biden isn’t really POTUS, Trump is in charge, etc. lead some to believe all is ok and over … it isn’t. There is a political war going on and it isn’t over or settled at all. There is no forgone conclusions. As Gen Flynn has stated a number of times, the MAGA conservatives were out maneuvered in Nov, 2020 and are now fighting to win back, regain ground to then go forward again.

But, did he win as measured by who is POTUS? And it makes me mad that all around I hear people saying “Happy Memorial Day!” I educate the ones I can, but many people just give me a blank look.

If you were one of the revered and honored fallen, and you could talk to someone like you, I’ve got $100 says you would be telling them not to cry but, instead, to be glad on this day and celebrate their memories and what they did for us all.
I invite you to think about and contemplate on all the reasons why that is.
Emotions are a choice. You must realize you are choosing to feel the way you do. If you were to say you have no choice, then you would be admitting to a lack of emotional self-control, which is to say mental self-discipline. It is exactly no different, for example, than choosing to let a perceived insult pass without reaction, like water off a duck’s back.
Re-read the first part again and then choose to channel the energy of your emotions from the pain of loss into the gratitude and joy of having such men and women to remember, honor and cherish. Let the example of their courage inspire you into your own acts of bravery and self-sacrifice.
This is the proper way to honor them, and the best among them would tell you no different. Don’t believe me? Go talk to a few highly decorated combat warriors and ask them, as I have. Let them tell you how to feel about today, and why.

We are not living the life that was meant for us. That is the life to come, not this one.
Yes, life itself is wonderful, but this life…in this world…is a POS compared to what is to come. Like comparing the smell of a cat turd to cooked bacon. It is that dramatic.

God tells us the greatest love is sacrificing your life so that others might live. We can, therefore, be sure that God himself holds the souls of our honored fallen in the highest of regard.
This is cause for celebration and joy, not sorrow.
We might grieve that we live in such a fallen world that requires such sacrifice for freedom’s sake, but we should celebrate the souls of those who willingly made that sacrifice for the benefit of others.
Today we lift our glasses to them, and we smile when we look upon the flag…the banner under which they fought and died.
They would not have it any other way.

Well, he wasn’t an American, but this seems like the day, because he was an ally.
I’ve mentioned in the past my high school teacher who had spent a fair amount of time in Germany in World War II courtesy of the Luftwaffe’s POW camps. He was a Canadian, and of course that entailed fighting on the UK’s side in World War II. His bomber had been shot down, the pilot sacrificing himself to save the remaining crew. And his camp was the basis for the movie “The Great Escape.” He wasn’t too happy with some of the liberties Hollywood took when they made that movie, but the broad outlines of the story are correct. There weren’t any Americans in the camp at the time. There had been originally, and when word came down the Americans were to be moved to another compound, the escape plan was put into high gear so that some Americans could escape (quite generous of the Brits in that camp), but the first tunnel was discovered and filled with raw sewage to prevent its re-use.
Although my (future) teacher wasn’t one of the escapees, he had quite a bit of an adventure surviving to the end of the war. The camp was in what later became East Germany and the prisoners were moved over and over again further westward, to keep them out of the hands of the Soviets. This was actually quite controversial in Germany at the time; why waste resources on a bunch of POWs? The Luftwaffe was actually somewhat decent as captors, at least to Americans and British Commonwealth prisoners; I would prefer that over the treatment the Soviet soldiers got at the hands of the Wehrmacht.
Most pilots and crew in Bomber Command didn’t live long enough to complete a one mission tour of duty. My teacher was one of the lucky ones, in true fact, having been taken prisoner rather than killed.
After the war he spent the rest of a military career in the Cold War, including tours on the north coast of Canada, then finally at NORAD (which was joint Canada/USA).
He passed away at the age of 101 this last February.

Back in my FORTRAN days I knew a guy who would build his FOR loops with a goto. Very consistent. He apparently had dealt in the past with a compiler that dorked up FOR loops without a lot of “help” from the programmer. It wasn’t much worse than the other things we had to do to code to get it to vectorize (this was my Cray-2 days).
Now we have exception-throwing, which is basically hidden go tos; I’m getting to loathe them. Frankly, I’d rather have the SOB core so I can debug it, then exit without a core. And also returning before the end of the function, which is at least visible and much better than a go to *within* the function.
Ahhh, nothing like a try/recover block while setcritical, heading toward system failure, shredding stack markers on the way down, making reading the dump especially, erm, entertaining. And then finding out virtual, spread out across 10-15 spindles (for speed and efficiency) has trashed pointers, which have to be recovered before the dump can even be loaded to get the symbols and data segment infos…

Holly, just curious – what is wrong with being part of the control group? I was accepted into one a few days ago. The stipulation is that you do not take the vaccine and if you change your mind and want to take the shot you have to let them know. Obviously, if you get or have had CV they need to know that too.
Just my way of saying I didn’t want to be part of an experiment. I didn’t realize there were control groups for people not receiving the vaccine. I haven’t heard about that. Interesting though.
Almost all experiments have a “control” to the best of my knowledge. Moderna started giving the “jab” to all those who were supposed to be in a control group so it no longer exists.

Put mason jars beside plants and filled with water. While the water wasn’t warm it stayed well above freezing and helped almost all of the plants through. some looked pretty sketchy and lost some leaves but are going gangbusters now.

While it’s always been a soldiers prerogative to file complaints about someone or something in the military with Senators or Congress its not been the norm to advertise it.
Soldiers are normally supposed to work out their issues with their chain of command which includes jumping the chain of command when they are not finding adequate redress. Failing that, is to take the complaint to the Inspector General where certain safeguards can be applied.
The idea is to keep the dirty laundry in house and not expose it to the rest of society least it damages the militaries standing with the public. A prerequisite of being a profession is to be able to police it’s own ranks and this in part is the motivation for the military to do the right thing and investigate complaints in a judicial manner.
Both Senator Cotton and Congressman Crenshaw given their military backgrounds fully understand this. The fact that they are streamlining this is an indicator of how serious the abuses must be with in the military. It’s a slap in the military’s face and likely a very deserved one. Any complaint coming from a congress must be answered in a timely manner normally by a general from that command. The process is slow and meticulous to that the military can show both that the complaint has been appropriately investigated and that due process has been followed. It’s clear that the military is bowing to undue influence from the Bidenese and this is a responsible counter. 🤗

I think there is plenty that can and will be done!
Unfortunately, I don’t know what it’s going to take to wake the American People up. We’ve been told for 5 years that there has to be a ‘great awakening’, while at the same time, the people who have all the information to wake America up, have kept that information hidden.
As a result, only people who are really paying attention seem to be aware that something is really, really wrong. And for our efforts of trying to show others, all we get is being called conspiracy theorists for our effort.
And the people who could (and should) back us up and spill the beans, don’t.
So we’re being used like cannon fodder. They send us into the teeth of the enemy, over and over and over again, like trench warfare in WWI, except we don’t have any weapons, we’re just human wave attacks against machine gun outposts 😂

Who knows. The ‘why’ doesn’t really matter much to the people sent charging into the meat-grinder.
But something is going to happen, something is going to trigger “it”.
I don’t think ‘awakening’ will be the right term for it.
More like triggering a waking nightmare, followed by realization, followed by the kind of anger, nationwide, that most of us have felt for years, except concentrated in the space of about a week, or however long it takes from the ‘tipping point’ to the time ‘everybody knows’.
And that is when ‘something’ will happen. I’m not sure what it will be, but the criminal government won’t be able to stop it. It will be like trying to stop a tidal wave, or a hurricane.
It’s just speculation, but it seems to me they are intentionally setting up a financial crisis. It is completely within their power to do so, e.g., printing money like it’s the Wiemar Republic, so every asset becomes a bubble.
The only thing sustaining the ‘everything bubble’ is market psychology.
The ‘Federal Reserve’ can break the market psychology just by issuing a few carefully chosen words.
Like ‘tapering’ or ‘need to raise interest rates’, and the financial asset bubbles pop like dominoes.
All over the world.
That would be enough to wake people up. It may be the ONLY thing that could wake most people up, is when suddenly all their money is gone (currency collapse) and all the assets inflated by the fake currency go to zero along with it.
Let the military try to deal with that, with 330+ million furious Americans. They could have done it the easy way, all they had to do was stop a few criminals.
Myanmar did it.
But not our military. And they won’t be able to do a thing, being outnumbered 100 to 1, from sea to shining sea.
And Chyna won’t be able to do anything about it either. They may be in charge of our military, but if Chyna shows their face in even the smallest way, 330+ million angry Americans will go immediately to berserker-rage stage.

It is disheartening that, at least so far, it seems that the military is more concerned with “wokeism” than they are with the FATE OF AMERICA, and hence, the fate of the WORLD.
I have to be honest, I try not to think about it too much.
Extreme hopium take: How much of the over-the-top wokeness is a public relations campaign to separate themselves as far as possible from President Trump so that if and when “the diamonds are returned,” it won’t look like a military coup?
I have considered that.
But lives are being ruined, people are dying, lots of people.

It wouldn’t be a coup, it would be a counter-coup. The coup already took place.
They could lock the U.N. and shove all the diplomats into the ocean, out into international waters, where they could wait in life preservers for pick up by their respective countries. The U.N. is no concern. The blue-helmets aren’t fighters, they’re mostly rapists of children in 3rd world countries.

Ignoring the reality presented to our faces daily causes paralysis, it gives a false sense that someone in our criminal government is going to finally do the right thing and fix this.
It’s a very comforting hope, but what is the foundation for it?

But the closer it gets, the more sure you gotta be, because if you’re wrong, you’re playing chicken with a locomotive.
And we have anything but surety.

Are we supposed to be grateful for that?

We’ve been on the cusp of victory, every day, for five years.
But there is no evidence, certainly none that is solid enough to bet your life on, and sadly, I’m out of time for waiting around taking hits off the hope bong. 😁
So I very much hope you’re right, but I have to prepare as if you’re wrong.
It’s a terrible position the so-called ‘good guys’ have put us in.
If I don’t take steps to prepare, and the so-called ‘good guys’ are just a psy-op, then I’m dead. And my extended family is likely all dead. And most of my friends.
If I do take steps to prepare, and the so-called ‘good guys’ miraculously step out of nowhere and manage to save the day, then all of my efforts and a considerable portion of my substance will have been wasted needlessly.
Between “dead” and “wasted needlessly” is where they’ve put us. That’s the choice we’re presented with.
Do nothing and hope for the best, with zero evidence (beyond what amounts to nothing more than ‘white hat psy-op) to believe that anything good will happen;
or
Take necessary precautions, which means turning my life upside down and cost a significant amount of what I have, in order to protect myself, in order to be in a position to help my family, my friends and my church family.
Because they’re not doing anything to prepare. They don’t even seem to be aware that anything’s wrong.
So it’s a lose-lose situation.
Do nothing besides put a fishtank full of pot (hopium) smoke over my head and hope for the best, or head for the hills and take Willy Devane’s advice.
Like everyone else, I’ve been waiting 5 years for ‘our side’ to something, to do anything, to show some SIGN of life.

If we all do the best we can, we make this world a better place. I have never had much luck with people rescuing me. I am almost always the one that takes care of others.
God takes care of me in ways that I would never expect so that I can take care of others. I will be 80 in September. I live alone but I am never lonely. God is still taking care of me and by His Grace, I am still taking care of myself and others.

That’s what’s driving me.
But since I can’t know the future, I can’t know for sure if what I am contemplating and trying to accomplish is the right thing, or not.
I just know that I have to try.
I have to do something.
I could be wrong, and if I am — if everything just magically keeps going on the way that it has been going on, if the DOW hits 500,000 and Bitcoin goes to a million, and printing trillions of dollars has no inflationary effect whatsoever, i.e., if it’s the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, where the laws of nature and economics no longer apply — then no one will be the worse for it, except me.
Or I could be right — in which case, there are no guarantees, but if I do it, the result could be that I’m in a position to help people. Maybe more than a few. If I do nothing, and it turns out my concerns were valid, I won’t be in a position to help anyone. And I will regret not having done something, when I still had a small window of opportunity.
The time between when it occurred to me there were certain steps I might be able to take, and the time that window closed.
So I have been working on doing something for a couple months now.
There’s a lot to do, and a lot of things that could go wrong. Or like Mickey Rourke’s character said to William Hurt, in Body Heat (1981):
“I want you to see if this sounds familiar: any time you try a decent crime, you got fifty ways you’re gonna @#$% up. If you think of twenty-five of them, then you’re a genius… and you ain’t no genius.”
I’m not working on any crime, that’s for sure… but I ain’t no genius, either 😁
So far, so good, but the hardest parts are still ahead. And there’s no way to know when the music is going to stop. Could be three or four years from now, or could be tomorrow. I think it’s a lot closer to tomorrow. So time is of the essence.
I’m still keeping an eye out for off-ramps, but as of now, it looks like I’m goin’ for it.

It’s no secret that the election was stolen. It’s no secret that in addition to the many traitors involved, they were aided and abetted by both foreign ‘allies’ and hostile adversaries.
It’s no secret that the military allowed that to happen, and allowed an illegitimate government to be sworn in.
We can argue as long as you like about who is really in charge, but the fact that there is even a question about who is running the most powerful nation on the planet indicates a problem substantial enough to be more than good cause for grave concern at any time, under any conditions.
You appear to be confident that this is all an act, like some twisted version of “The Truman Show” (which I’ve never seen, but I understand the premise), and some ‘big reveal’ is coming in the form of a happy ending.
That’s great, but for millions of people, it’s already too late for that, there’s not going to be a happy ending. And that becomes reality for more people every day that passes.
That’s just truth. You can mock it, and you can mock the lives which have been ruined or lost, but to what end?
If you have evidence which can withstand critical scrutiny, you haven’t shared it. And if that’s the case, if you have credible evidence that you’ll bet your life on, while attempting to mock those who don’t have access to the evidence you have, how does that not make you a hypocrite?
And if you don’t any evidence that can withstand critical scrutiny, if your confidence is based on nothing more than a note you wrote to yourself and put in your hope chest, because you’re afraid to face a potential reality and deal with it rationally, then who’s really afraid here?
If you have nothing, and you do nothing besides discourage others from taking rational steps to protect themselves, who is that helping?

In gaming there are things they call, “Easter eggs“. It refers to special tricks in the game, Commands that are not obvious and are not in any manual. If you are somehow on the inside, you know that “when you reach the Volcano of Doom, if you pluck this flower and kick that rock, it opens up the special passageway that no one else knows about.”
I will not identify the brand of election machine, but I can leak this much: at least one of the brands of voting machines has been found to have such “Easter eggs”. Imagine a command for an optical scanner that reads, “do not see red ink” but really DOES “do not count Republican votes”. For other crazy combinations of buttons that no one would randomly type, but if you happen to know them, functionally do the same thing. That is an odd thing, to bury such Easter eggs in there election equipment, don’t you think?
