ICE WINE
Now to the beauty of winemaking, in particular ice wines. Ice wines are really and truly made from frozen grapes. To the purist that means grapes that were left on the vine until the cold weather arrives. Once temperatures reach into the negatives, the grapes are harvested and immediately pressed.
Being frozen, only the juice is reserved when pressed, and the water (ice) is taken out of the process. This allows for a very sweet wine that is usually used for dessert, or an aperitif, and sometimes as an ingredient in cocktails. Of course, ice wines are quite expensive and sold in 375 ml bottles.
Canada is a big producer of ice wines, but here’s a lovely version from the Finger Lakes. It’s from Wagner Vineyards. The bartenders are ready and as an added bonus, there is a lovely selection from Wegmans olive bar to go along.
Yes, watching the videos below made me really, really miss upstate New York. It’s such a special place, and there are so many wonderful people and places there. Sigh. Ok. Picking myself up.

And just for nice, here is a lovely video all about the Finger Lakes. The first 20 minutes tell a wonderful story of the Finger Lakes and how wineries came to be there. I had no idea that American winemakers almost killed the wine industry in Europe but ended up also saving it because of American grape rootstocks. Ya gotta listen in.
Also in the first 20 or so minutes is the wonderful story of Dr. Frank Konstantin, a Ukrainian immigrant who was able to prove to American winemakers that the best wine grapes could be grown in the cold weather of New York. Great story. And Dr. Konstantin was an American patriot. Enjoy his story!

A brief scan of the Wiki page on voting machines reveals that some form of mechanical voting has been used in America since the latter part of the 1800s. Later, punched cards were used, which resulted in the hanging chads of the 2000 Bush v. Gore election. First, you have to press the grapes and extract the juice — a substantial amount of added chemicals would be lost with the skins. Then you ferment them — and another lot would end up inside the yeast. You distill the result, and more chemicals will be lost to the heads and tails of distillation. Then you age in wood, and more can be absorbed from the wood.
Mind you, I’d hesitate to consume wines made downwind from a fire in a pesticide factory….but smoked in a grass fire is probably ok.

Most of California has a “Mediterranean climate” where it rains from October to March, then just stops. The hills are green from November to April. And then they are brown again.

They relate to common taboos regarding menstruating females.
Frazer strolls blithely into this with a breezy “primitive man couldn’t help but notice that something wondrous and strange happened to his female companions once a month….” He continues with, “this was often celebrated, or encircled with rites….” [These are not quote-quotes, but paraphrases from memory.] And you’re nodding along….
The next thing you know, he has chapters about separate menstruation houses on stilts, or segregation of women at “that time” in holes in the ground — and you’re wondering if you’re still on the same planet. But he has footnotes to prove you are — and plenty of examples.
And then he casually strolls along to pregnancy….
It is a delightful book, which might well be subtitled, “A Catalogue of Madness.”

Seriously though, the region is beautiful and most wines are good too. That whole area of NY is very depressed economically, the tourism and the Mennonites keep it going now. There’s also some Great craft brewers in the area. Southern Tier Brewery one of my favorites. (Coothie) And Wegmans, the best of the best grocer by far. Well they too have sliped some. Once I get situated in NC, I’d imagine I’m going to be loving all sorts of places — there is just so much to see and do.
And the Amish. They have become a huge presence in our area. Food, livestock, construction, dog breeding. They are involved in everything.

I had friends where the daughters were nurses and caught the Hospital nurse bringing the wrong meds to their mother. Two cases and one wonders when people get worse. I knew a woman who got knee replacements and refused meds because she was fearful the type of meds they would give her.
I am trying my best to keep my mother out of a nursing home but it is hard. Just today when we got home from the doctor she basically crumpled going up a step and I had to call the neighbors to help get her up. Dementia is a bear. . . At least her neighbors will help.

I told my husband and kids I do not care where they put me when my if my mind is gone. As long as I still have my faculties I am going no where.
I know I took care of my husband’s mother in our home. I had to help her take a bath, going up and down steps. She was a small women and I was easily able to hold her. I always have been strong because I have been very active all my life. It was only a problem when she began to have onset of dementia she could be nasty. I took 2-3 days a week 4 hours off and someone came in to clean her room and entertain her. She did not like that but I needed the time for myself to be a good care giver.

If you have a nursing school nearby, any lvn/lpn or rn past their 1st semester could sit and do care while they study. You can think abiut that for help.

Once we realized my Dad had Dementia, I moved him in with me. I took care of him for over 2 years with some assistance from Home Health folks. They made visits for PT, occasional showers and peace keeping. He wouldn’t bathe and got very nasty at times. I had to lock myself in my room with him screaming/cussing at me. Finally, the Nurse came, saw, backed me up and told his Dr. he needed ATIVAN. I was so mad at his Dr.!!! I was caretaker(physically, medically, financially) and had been trying to tell her he needed it to stay calm, but she would take his side as if 2 children were arguing and he was right. Crazy!! He frequently fell, and I’d have to find someone to come pick him up. Many times it was the ambulance @ $175/trip.🤑☹ He finally had a stroke and I had no choice but to put him in a nursing home. He lasted almost 2yrs there before he passed. I found a really good one. I visited him weekly, and would pop in at all different times to check up on him/them. I got to know the management, Docs, therapists, nurses, caretakers. They would call instantly anytime something changed with him. They took good care of him and constantly kept me informed. I even got to take my Aussie up to visit him. Joyous for both Dad and pup! They missed each other. And other residents too, a treat to see and pet a puppy. NH was less than 2 miles away, that was a bonus. There are some good ones out there.

Beat it completely in a week, except now and then I feel an underlying fleeting pain in ears or throat. I had not been in public for 2weeks, only my niece’s pool. I did however, retrieve an Amazon package from the porch the night before. One week exactly, Weirdest thing ever!!

Good info. When we went to grand canyon last summer it was light too. Still enough peopke but shuttles werent running. Williams was busy then too. Maybe the weather?

Sedona does a lot of off roading. Famous for punk jeep tours but i would avoid that company. Last time i checked theres a lot of staffing and cleanliness issues there and high prices. But there are enough work arounds. It just got too hot for all the outdoor stuff for us.

My sister and I took the nephews to the zoo. I won’t relate the opinions of the twelve year old of the whole experience, but there were more animals out today than I have seen in the last five trips I’ve taken there combined. Masking was at a spattering. Not many people masked at all, even in the buildings. Unjabbed people are supposed to wear face diapers, but since it is illegal for anyone to ask your status, I suspect a decent percentage were in my status class.
I went to a Memorial Mass for one of the old men at my home parish this afternoon to help sing, and when I walked in, I got, “DePat, we’re masking today. So, after Mass, when the parish reunion was underway (this happens every time one of the old men dies), and after I hugged my second mom – the one who had a big hand in raising me – I was talking to a fellow singer who was complaining about a director somewhere she sings. “He refuses to get vaccinated and he won’t wear a mask.” Yeah, this one is a flaming nut job, and used to be a red head.
After that, my sister had an idea to go to “Food Truck Friday” in Tower Grove Park, which is one of the big ones on the south side of the city right by the Missouri Botanical Garden. Essentially, we paid for overpriced bar food so that we could sit in a public park with a couple thousand of our best friends and more bugs than are comfortable having around. The live music was good. Masking was even less than at the zoo. I actually was allowed to pay with cash, too.
For whatever reason, our county executive, a politician with a “medical doctor” degree, has decided that the county is going back to mask status. Yeah, we’ll see how this goes over. Supposedly, we’re a hotspot for the triangle, uh, delta thingy, so he feels justified.
I’m dying to see how this comes out in horrified fascination.
Oh, and the Couch Commando reports that he saw F-18s in west county today among other odd aircraft.
Yeah. I think people are completely over the face diapers. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how few people are wearing masks here in Salem, Oregon. When I got groceries, maybe 2 people in the entire store. And I was able to get my first haircut without a mask yesterday, though a couple of the women cutting hair had on masks. I would bet that in a couple of weeks I’ll see zero masks. It is SO nice to actually see some human faces again.

I’m not sure how any business is lawfully allowed to refuse cash, ever.

Our county health guy had the same issue…he was shamed and it pointed out he is not a public health md…people publicly berated his credentials…it took some time but he is no longer the public health director. I suggest your county approach it the same.
The county executive IS an MD. That’s the problem.
So was ours just not a public health specialist…and they kept going after justification with med evidence he couldnt back up.

Czechs to Allow Gun Ownership for Self Defence

“Prague, Jul 21 (EFE).- The Czech Parliament approved Wednesday a constitutional amendment recognizing the right to use arms in self-defense and to protect others, bucking the trend of stricter gun regulation in the European Union, CT24 television reported.
The upper house ratified the new article of the constitution, which had already passed the lower house.
The amendment states that “the right to defend one’s life or the life of others, even with the use of weapons, is guaranteed.”
