Thanking everybody for your patience. Whether happenstance, coincidence, or enemy action, I’m dealing with some technical issues. In addition to those, and the obvious spiritual attacks, I am dealing with the obvious site stuff in what are best maintained as unobvious ways.
I suspect we struck a nerve.
A combined technical / spiritual / strategic response by all of us will prevent this attack from succeeding. Hold the line – bite the bullet – gird the loins – bite the lip – pray for guidance, discernment, and strength – whatever YOU believe keeps the ship aright for the moment. Everything else is lower priority.
In that spirit, the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel from Tuesday’s threads, and the Breastplate of St. Patrick, not to mention the Litany of Humility are favorites recommended by exorcists in spiritual warfare.

We’re eventually going to be doing https://www.kali.org/docs/introduction/download-images-securely/ , but it’s going to be a bit complicated because we’re going to be downloading all the stuff on the “helper” device, transferring to a thumb drive, validating on your Linux system, then moving back to the “helper” system to burn onto a micro-SD card. You will need to “be sure to download the SHA256SUMS and SHA256SUMS.gpg files that are next to the downloaded image”, but you can wait for me to show up to assist through the next bit. Or not. All the information you need will be in man, if you want to tough it out.
However, ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND SOMETHING BEFORE YOU DO IT, and that goes TRIPLE for anything “sudo”, and about SIX times for anything with “dd”.
Once we’re confident in the SD card, we’ll down the Linux system, swap the SD’s, and reboot into Kali — the Swiss Army knife of cybersecurity. We have to change the password before plugging in the internet, but — oddly — will not be enabling ufw. Kali is the sort of threat that ufw is supposed to protect you from.
It’s OK to leave Kali running overnight to crack passwords, but when it’s not doing anything and you’re leaving it, it is best to shut it down.
After reading the docs you provided I think that utilizing Kali at this time is a series of ‘bridges too far”. I am not competent to use Kali at this time- too advanced for my level of knowledge.

Kali sounds like the software I am ultimately hoping to use but I believe I am some years away from making any beneficial use of it. I need more foundational work. You may have guessed by now that I am not a computer adept.

One thing about older furnaces is that spare parts for them have often stopped being made, and can be scarce to find. You can sometimes find old stock replacement parts on places like eBay, but it is not really an option if a breakdown happens during the heating season because of the time it takes to get the part delivered.
Residential HVAC has an “air handler” [fan on/off], a “coil” section (evaporative [indoor] and compressor [outdoor] coils) [cooling], and a “heat exchanger” section, where burners take OUTSIDE AIR for combustion and exhaust OUTSIDE, and a heat exchanger takes all the heat and applies it to air going through the unit.
Each of these can have a reason to replace, but different costs to do so. Replacing AC coils because of a bad fan is an expensive waste of money. Then, again, heat exchangers have gotten seriously better over the last 30 years and it might make sense to change just for energy savings (and there may be government subsidies or credits available).
As always, it’s in the details — and they love to hide the details.

Definitely a huge plus (long term) in making a decision to replace.
Another issue is the refrigerant used. The ones being used now are unstable and less efficient as compared to the ones from 30 years ago (and those were worse than the fake-science-faulted Freon)… The greens and their collective Ty-D-Bowl touch…
OK, I’m just going to do a first little hint about real-world cryptography. It’s not too bad when you just talk, but the implementation may cause stress headaches and explosive cranial events, so we’ll do those some other time.
In the “good old days” of cryptography (up to about WWII), You had text, you whomped it with a code, and you ended up with coded text. When you took the coded text and whomped it with the proper code, you got the original text back.
Modern internet crypto relies on two keys — public and private. Let’s say I have one called C (for cthulhu). I have a C(pri) which is my private key, and C(pub) which is my public key. If I have text that I whomp with C(pri), and you whomp it with C(pub), you can read the text — but it can only come from me, because only I have my private key. If I whomp my text with C(pri) and try to read it by whomping it with C(pri), I get garbage. If you whomp some text with C(pub) and spread it everywhere, anyone who tries to whomp it with C(pub) gets garbage — only I can whomp it with C(pri) and read it.
Let’s say that Robert generates a keypair and publishes R(pub). I can then take a message and whomp it with C(pri) [it could only be from me] and then whomp it with R(pub) [only R can read it]. Robert can whomp it with R(pri) [which will still be encrypted], then with C(pub) and read it.

One line is ” gpg –keyserver –recv-key 44C6513A8E4FB3D30875F758ED444FF07D8D0BF6 “. That says, go to keyserver “hkps://keys.openpgp.org” and snag the public key with the nickname “44C6513A8E4FB3D30875F758ED444FF07D8D0BF6″ [there are a few of them] and add it to your keyring.
You could also ” wget -q -O – https://archive.kali.org/archive-key.asc | gpg –import “, if you trust that kali.org can keep their page from serving bad data [ummmmm…..they’re security experts…..]
Alternatively, you could try a different keyserver — perhaps keyserver.ubuntu.com . There are several around, and they generally share public keys between each other.
If I had a blog on “cthulhupage.com”, I’d probably have a place for the regulars to post public keys.
Anyhoo…..Kali goes on to say that you can verify the key with (includes command and response):
— that’s the sort of response you get from a valid key. If it shows something unexpected, you should investigate further.
If you have a valid key for a file and a valid checksum, you can fully validate the file.
