My husband’s lack of a father for most of his life has significantly impacted him in multiple painful ways. Father God has healed Some of the fatherlessness breach but it’s still left a huge impact. Michael’s ability to be an Amazing Father is perhaps partially motivated by the gaping hole of fatherlessness in his own psyche. Ironically he’s practically an adopted father to a number of young people, usually our kids’ friends, as he is a great role model, mentor, & perpetual teenager all rolled into one!
Ironically on recent wanderings in the Daily Mail I read an article about how QEII didn’t grant the former/abdicated king’s dying wish to have his wife that he abandoned the throne for granted the HRH (presumably Her Royal Highness) title. In that article it was said that he blamed his own father, the king before he was crowned, for not preparing him to be king. It was daddy’s fault that he was unserious, not devoted to duty, & lacking self-discipline…hmmm…

My daughter Clarissa was past her due date, last Monday, iirc, saw the OB on Tuesday & was scheduled for This evening for an induction if she didn’t go on her own beforehand. C woke up at 4am on Saturday for the restroom & her water broke on the way so they went to the hospital later that morning. Unfortunately there was meconium (baby pooped in the womb) staining, which is an increased risk of infection & perhaps other complications.
At the hospital, the same one where our first grandchild was born last year, they set C up on a Pitocin drip to accelerate the labor process. When I arrived there in the afternoon C’s cervix was only at 4cm & it needed to be 10cm for delivery…
There were various ups & downs & some concerns about the baby’s heartrate decelerating during contractions so that they implemented a number of approaches to rectify the situation, which worked. Ultimately they turned off the Pitocin & C delivered her baby daughter, Lillian Ellsworth, at 6:37pm on Saturday. She was the 2nd fastest labor of the day on that unit, & the fastest labor wasn’t a first time mom. 🙂
Ellsworth aside: Both sides of our family have E as a middle name. In fact when Michael & I were getting to know each other he told me his middle name started with an E & he wanted me to guess it. I’m like Edward? Eugene? & then I pause & do this one eye squint look & say “it wouldn’t be Ellsworth would it?” His jaw about hit the floor for No one had Ever guessed that name. Well both our dads & both their granddads were named William Ellsworth & his grandpa was Clarence E so we have an unbroken line of Ellsworth going back to the 1860’s. We gave the E to our firstborn Nathaniel & believe that N & his wife May pass the E down to their firstborn son, should one materialize some day.
I saw an Antiques Roadshow episode that discussed on old commemorative pitcher that referred to a significant historical death, the supposed first death in the Civil War, of a man named William Ellsworth, who was killed when having climbed the staircase of a church steeple to remove a Confederate flag that had been hung there & coming back down the stairs was bayonetted to death, iirc, by Confederate sympathizers. So I Think that both of our great-grandfathers were named for this martyr to the cause of preserving the Union since these men were born in the early 1860’s when that event was likely freshly on the minds of pro-Union Americans. That’s a genealogical theory that I developed as to how the Ellsworth name started in both our families, absence other evidence, but it doesn’t explain why so many generations have chosen to keep passing Ellsworth along. That C & M gave their Daughter the Ellsworth adds a whole new twist to the equation but is so fitting since Clarissa largely broke the sex barrier at hunting camp too!
Baby was very alert & quite cute as she didn’t even get the typically misshapen head from natural delivery, having moved down & out so quickly (-2 to born in less than 3 hours). C had minimal tearing (Stage 1, compared to my Stage 4 for the first baby & bathroom complexities ever since) & was in just minor discomfort in the hours after delivery, pain of 1 on a scale of 1-10. She was pain 5-6 when I got there & thought she got to 8.5-9 at the peak of pain in labor delivery, in retrospect. She’s a trooper!
Settling into breastfeeding & family life in the hospital was going pretty well over all…
One frustration has been the “covid protocols” that are still in place at this hospital. Thankfully they relaxed the mask naziism that was present last year for our oldest son & daughter-in-law when Lilah was born. They still only allowed one additional visitor for the duration of the stay besides the dad. I am that designated visitor, as my daughter-in-law’s mother was last year.
When our 1st grandchild was born we were not even “allowed” to go to the hospital to be part of that process because of the protocols. She was in the hospital for nearly a week due to jaundice issues so we didn’t meet face-to-face until she’d come home 🙁
Now our son-in-law’s father is in the same boat as we were last year with the birth of His first grandchild. He was able to come to the waiting room outside the unit, as did my husband, & so he got some face to face info from his son & later from me after Lilian was born. This man was quite distraught & even angry that he was being denied access to his new grandchild. The hospital doesn’t even have a mechanism where you can view the baby from behind glass, like you see in the movies, or like we experienced with our twins in the NICU when there was a window that their brother could view them even if he couldn’t be directly with them in their birth hospital.
Our son-in-law’s & his father’s situation was further emotionally laden because yesterday was the anniversary of his mother’s death. Marshall was literally praying “please God don’t let the baby be born on that day” & she was born the day before so her birthday & mom’s death date are a day apart. Marshall’s mom’s mom just died earlier this month after losing her own battle with cancer when it had been hoped that she would have been able to hold on long enough to see her deceased daughter’s first grandchild in this life, but we trust that grandma & great-grandma are both celebrating in heaven over this precious new life.
Marshall’s mom birthed 4 sons, one stillborn, & Marshall might be the only one to marry or have kids. His mom’s family & her widower attached great significance to her deep desire for a daughter that was never granted in this life. When Clarissa married into the family her status as the daughter-in-law of her late mother-in-law held great significance to many in M’s family. To say that his family are overjoyed at the birth of a Baby Girl is basically an understatement. This birth is a very big deal to an extended, bereaved family.
M’s cousin from California called while I was present in the room & over speaker I could tell the deep love & emotion that was verbalized & evidenced beyond words. He confessed his tears & joy over this baby’s birth & it was so precious. This child is healing the breach in a number of lives & relationships & this is beautiful & God-glorifying.
Watching these new parents learn how to care for their daughter & care for each other in this transitional phase is also a humbling privilege. My daughter’s beauty was fully evident in her suffering to bring forth her child & now in how she tenderly cares for her needs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that near “Madonna & child” (no offence intended here) type of interaction before, I mean she practically glows with a gentle softness & tender, loving ministry to whatever her new daughter’s needs might be…so precious.
Anyway, yesterday various events had to happen for Lillian at roughly 12 hours & roughly 24 hours after birth. One was a hearing test that was failed the first time but passed when reattempted hours later–a relief. There are also cardiac checks, & I don’t know those results yet & since Josiah is a congenital heart baby it will be great to get an all-clear in that domain, if that’s the case. Another was the bilirubin level that based on the baby’s skin color changes overnight I wondered if it might become an issue…& it has. As of when I had to leave last night they were beginning a treatment protocol adding supplemental nutrition following breast-feeding so that BF & milk production isn’t thwarted. They will be checking Lillian’s bilirubin levels sometime this morning & they assessing where they go from there. The Best Case scenario is that she might be able to come home some time today…Prayers would be appreciated here for the jaundice to quickly abate w/ no further complications!
Clarissa said that when she declined to have the Hep B shot for Lillian she got some pushback from staff, who even claimed that “no pediatrician would be willing to see an unvaccinated child.” She contacted her sister-in-law because they also declined vax’s for Lilah, & got the name of her pediatrician & low & behold that doctor is even on the list that the hospital provides so there should be no issue in getting Lillian seen there!
Clarissa pointed out that she & I have Never done the hospital thing together, where she is the patient. For 2 dozen surgeries between her 3 brothers, nearly 20 are Josiah’s, the bulk of which were also in-patient, I learned how to do the patient advocate thing & how to be (relatively) comfortable in a hospital setting. So this was a new layer in our relationship & overall that is going quite well! But I’ve got to say that spending the bulk of the day at the hospital is incredibly fatiguing. I don’t really notice it when there since there are so many things to attend to that sometimes I barely get to sit down (or use the tablet to check The Q-Tree) so the exhaustion really hits me when I leave…the old gray mare ain’t what she used to be 😉 Thankfully this hospitalization, though still marred by covidiocy, is a significant improvement over the way things were Summer 2020 when Josiah was in-patient w/ Liver Transplant Rejection issues…sigh…
On another front C & M bought a house at the end of 2022 & have been proceeding with various C of O repairs, plus their own preparations of painting & renovations, & they have not Yet moved in. Their C of O inspection was scheduled for tomorrow & IF they pass then they can legally occupy their home. Well yesterday my oldest son borrowed a box truck from his work that Hubby had to drive having a CDL, our middle son, & Marshall all gathered at Marshall’s dad’s home to collect Most of C & M’s stuff to move it into their home. Michael had to be straw boss in several ways & did some clean up in the home as it still has that “under renovation” vibe going on so when Mom & Baby are finally allowed to leave the hospital they should be able to get into their home…& I thought I was a bad procrastinator–these 2 kick my butt bigtime LOL
So it’s been a pretty involved family affair, which is a good thing, since many hands make light work! It will be interesting to see what today might bring.
So far SCORE TWO for the Kingdom of God in Live Births to Strong Christian parents who plan to homeschool & raise their daughters in the fear & admonition of the Lord. Genocide Gamers aren’t getting their grubby mitts on these precious little ones!

we’re fine. our pond needs a spring tune up…lol…and we have the “pond guy” fixing it (blanket weed needs taken care of and restocking the fish perhaps.)
we have perch, blue gill and sunnies apparently.
but our duck visitors brought in cattails which are choking out the water lilies and they have to be removed yearly.
Fascinating. I’ve Never in my life contemplated pond maintenance. What a blessing to have such an asset to care for. By the way I used to love those pan fish, especially fried up for breakfast–Yum!
Sometimes when I was a kid I could catch some such fish with my hands at my grandparents’ cottage for they lived on a manmade lake on a point, where they’d built their sauna being good Finns, & that shallow area was home to dozens of pan fish nests. Fun memory of simpler times 🙂

I’ve written a journal for my son since the day I delivered him–daily back then but now whenever events warrant it. I filled 2 so far.
I started one for my granddaughter as well.
hopefully both will appreciate the thoughts and sentiments that goes into those journals.

I did some periodic journaling but I think the last time I made an entry (that was kid related) was when I was in the surgical waiting room when Josiah was having a liver biopsy. His Neuro-Psychologist was walking through & caught my eye (this was Christmas Eve, or the day before). He wanted to know what was happening (& I’d been trying to journal about some of it at that time literally) so I gave him the brief lowdown of the then recent discoveries of Josiah’s brain tumor & liver masses/tumors. The look of compassion on his face almost undid me as that whole situation was so incredibly overwhelming in the initial phase, before we learned that liver transplant was to be part of our journey which kicked things into pretty high gear.
Years ago I’d read a book, called Love Greg & Lauren iirc, where the husband was documenting the medical journey of his wife who’d been severely burned in the 9/11 attacks & was one of the burn unit’s survivors who actually made it out of the hospital eventually. He published the series of emails he’d composed articulating the ups & downs of their hospital journey, interspersed with happening in other arenas. This approach inspired me to use a medical blog service then available, called CarePages.com, to keep track of many of the details of our experience with Josiah in facing the Brain Tumor, later the Liver Transplant, & many other medical & special ed battle grounds.
I guess that type of blogging is a form of online journaling which can be public, private, & various places in between. Back then CP was helpful for me as an outlet to articulate much of what was happening in detail that I could return to as a reference & a way to intellectualize happenings that were deeply mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, & even interpersonally overwhelming. CP’s allowed a format to email followers with notifications of updates & most of the people who followed us there were personally known to me. The support & prayer request capabilities were very impactful going through those very trying seasons.
Well CarePages ceased operations & I transferred that medical style blogging to another service, CaringBridge, but it did not facilitate the transfer of the followers very well. So CP was extremely helpful in very trying times & now CB is mostly just my own personal online medical journal that few review, but since we’re not in the level of crisis now that we were w/ Brain Tumor & Liver Masses/Tumors into Liver Transplant mode, excepting the Transplant Rejection situation in 2020, not having that greater support & interaction has been “survivable”.
When CP was ending I Couldn’t Bear to have all that work & interaction just evaporate into the ether so I created some of my WP blogs to archive 3 CP sites: mine w/ extreme details, Josiah’s that he began developing in the midst of that journey, & a classmate of my kids (she’d been in Brandon’s combined class & also Clarissa’s combined class) who also went through a parallel & unique Liver Transplant Journey. She was even Becky Thatcher to Brandon’s Tom Sawyer in the class play!

I don’t think I ever finished that journal entry that was interrupted by Josiah’s NeuroPsychologist as they called me to recovery & then we were in his room w/ a partially collapsed lung & trying to get ready for Christmas & the increasing chaos of life that those tumors represented in his life, my life, & to a lesser extent the rest of the family’s. We’ve come a Long Way baby 🙂
Oh & if I’d never done CP I might never have developed a WP blog nor found the Conservative Treehouse nor wandered into Wolf’s Pack along the way & my life would have been so much poorer & I would be much less informed & inspired…

Regarding the ‘misshapen’ head – my first son came out looking like Buddy Hackett after hitting a brick wall. I was busy working my brain into accepting this shock when the doc stuck his thumb into his mouth and suddenly he looked perfectly normal.
Second son came out looking just fine.
Why am I telling you this?
Because the one that had the thumb-push on his palate never snored and never had cavities. Why? Because the push had the side effect of lining up his sinuses properly so he breathed through his nose while sleeping. Kept his teeth wet which prevented tooth decay.
Second son snores and had a heck of a time nursing because he couldn’t breathe right. He’s now 34 and has had more than his share of dental problems.
Get that kid checked for proper sinus alignment. If he has an issue, you don’t want his brain to learn mouth breathing as a default.
Side note – how can the baby poo infect anything? It’s not really poo, anyway. When I first saw it I called it packing grease. [looked just like what they used to use to prevent rust on machined parts]

Regarding “packing grease” — it’s produced before there is actually anything to eat, so it’s not going to be carrying infections from outside. That said, there is the possibility of aspiration, which is an obvious problem.
I would be surprised if there weren’t biochemical markers from the baby that told the mom, (a) I am soooooo DONE with this place! (enhancing delivery), and (b) my digestive system is primed and ready to go! (enhancing lactation). It would seem like a logical place to put things.

My son-in-law said something about how Clarissa’s & Lillian’s blood types were different, C being O+ & L being A+, I believe, & that they might have some type of digestive concerns with the baby’s metabolism having a hard time with Clarissa’s milk or even colastrum because of these different blood types. I wasn’t there for such discussions & that doesn’t make sense to me but whatever testing was done made it seem like the potential for nutritional issues was minimal…hmmm…
Baby poo in the womb means that it’s gone everywhere including inside the baby as they breathe in the amniotic fluid while in utero. I don’t fully know, but since meconium is the waste product from the bowels it contains what the body would normally reject. Does the baby have “normal flora” bacteria that we all develop when in the womb? I have no idea.
My nephew was a Meconium baby too & apparently breathed it in on his first breath after delivery & was sent to the NICU immediately. There weren’t any of those discussions regarding Lillian thankfully. She was a bit “snuffly” like junk up in her sinuses which could include meconium I would guess. It also could be in her ears & was definitely in some of her skin folds even after they’d cleaned her up immediately after birth & even to some degree after her “bath” at 12 hours old. That “bath” was scrubbing with a wet soapy washcloth & having some rinse water squeezed over her as she lay on the wider padded surface under a warming light where they first worked on her after being born.
When daughter was being set up to begin pushing they poured a significant amount of Betadine over her delivery zone specifically because of the meconium, based on what staff were saying to each other. So that “poop” inside the amniotic sack made the delivery more infection prone. I don’t think they gave my daughter antibiotics for the tearing of the birth canal which could have allowed the meconium to enter her bloodstream to some extent (presumably) so perhaps theoretical maternal infection wasn’t of great concern here…
Yes – once the sterility of pre-birth is gone, the meconium becomes fertilizer for microbes.

My youngest cousin was an even three pounds heavier than Lillian and a standard birth. There’s something to be said for a compact bundle of joy.
Yikes! No doubt. Lillian was 1 1/2 ounces bigger than my first born, who ended up being my largest baby. I was my mom’s firstborn & ended up being her smallest baby. As long as they are healthy, or even if not, like in Josiah’s case, it’s all good & all in God’s hands as we learn to juggle these unique bundles of joy 🙂

Thanks Scott. Getting rest as it hits me & I can’t keep my eyes open. My home schedule is really bizarre with my husband’s work hours since taking this job in November. He goes to bed 8pmish & gets up 3am, leaving at 3:30. I Might stay awake until he gets up & leaves or I Might fall asleep in exhaustion & not even hear him getting ready. Basically I’ve been sleeping in random fits & starts at all sorts of different times of the day &/or night…Basically ready & able to help my daughter, if she needs it, Any time, day or night LOL…

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what we can do about where we are now, as conservatives living under the yoke of liberalism. Because we are.
I’ve been watching The Chosen,” and if you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it highly enough. I know some won’t watch it for various reasons, but they are missing out, in my opinion.
There are INCREDIBLE parallels between what is happening to conservatives today, and what happened to the followers of Jesus, both while He was living, and after He was resurrected. The hedonistic world did NOT want the message of righteous, Godly living to spread. It was a dire threat to their way of life, including the root of all evil, their wealth. Even the religious Jews had an “upper class” of religious leaders who were hellbent on maintaining their power and prestige. Just as conservatives today advocate for goodness and decency and are met with derision and condemnation, so were the followers of Jesus met.
Understand, I have not been much of a church-goer since childhood. Churches have people in them, and I am very introverted. I am also a black-and-white thinker, and people are so many shades of gray.
But thinking about what we can DO, as opposed to just talking about revolting, which would only get us Jan. 6’ed, and re-reading the Bible and watching The Chosen, and having some interesting conversations with a handful of people has led me to one final idea; we have to lead people back to church.
There’s a funny meme floating around, which of course I can’t find when I want it, about how it’s now a revolutionary act to go to church. And it really is. So we need to not only go ourselves, but encourage everyone else to go, too.
I know quite a few Christians who don’t attend church for one reason or another. It’s mostly because they became disheartened after having a negative experience in some church. I would be one of those. But it’s time for us to forget our disappointments with past encounters, and find our way back in. Because today, we are very like those people in the early church, and our survival may depend on finding each other and forming spiritual community.
So, my challenge to myself and to us all is, if we don’t have a church, find one. And if we know people who have fallen away from church, try to persuade them to try again. I myself finally went back, and although I am struggling to find a church where I “fit,” I will not give up.
From where I am, “…find a church where I “fit,… “, is quite the puzzle.
Slow guy is a square peg, not fitting into the round hole(s).
Not that I’ve tried since walking away, from The Church, at ~twelve.

I realized when I started this journey to try to find a hole to fit in that it was not going to be easy. But I’m looking at it like trying on jeans and finding the perfect pair. I read once that the average woman tries on about 15 pairs to find the right fit!
I’m really hoping I don’t have to try 15 churches, but I will if I have to. I’m committed.
Bakocarl has become my church. I have been slacking on giving thanks to God with the deluge of chaos and crime distracting me. I need to keep looking up more.

Thank you for sharing ALL of this. Your deepening faith journey is inspiring AND encouraging. I am one of those mostly unchurched now who was raised in church. I have not fallen away from the faith, I believe, but am typically mostly indifferent to church attendance for quite a few years now. My husband remains active in worship & mentoring & when I do attend it’s usually to support him in his endeavors. Where I used to find the church experience more meaningful it now represents more of a personal struggle to find God’s still small voice in the the chaos, self-focus, & wokism that have become so prevalent. Thank you for issuing the challenge to more actively engage Christian community! God Bless YOU!

We’ve had somewhat polarizing discussions on here about The Chosen before. We are big supporters of the show. They openly state they are not trying to be a substitute for scripture or the church, that it is a TV show. They are simply bringing to life and sparking interest and discussion about scriptural events. The information about the show is readily available on their website.
You are spot on with your post IMO. We have been regularly attending, participating and at times leading and teaching in church for 4 decades. At times it has been wonderful and at other times disheartening. Just like it has been for Christians for 2000 years. Christian perfection is only found through the person of Jesus. We will never experience it through other people like ourselves. The church is not a substitute for a relationship with Him. It is primarily for support and discipling.
As a result we all choose to be a part of the problem or a part of the solution by what actions we take in response to Him. He told us to love God, fellowship, support, and love one another. In a collective sense it can be in a formal organization or even in homes.

Also, I have to say that in regards to The Chosen, what it has caused me to do it look up things in Scripture and read what it says, to see what actually transpired. And the show is faithful to what I read, in every case thus far.
i agree. They use Christian theologians and a rabbi to simply ask the question if the script is plausible in the dialogs of the actors. The little jokes, the personal conflicts and issues, etc. are real life type things we all deal with today. They may or may not have actually been said or done in the actual scriptural stories, but they could have and not been in conflict.
It opens your mind to real life possibilities and the scripture’s application to same.

I attend an actual church, which in imo is defined as one which worships God as He desires, not as we desire…acknowledging The Trinity as our God is described in the Bible, not as we might wish Him to be. We preach expositionally through the Bible, taking the whole counsel of God. We have no paid Staff apart from our Pastor, and we have no Programs; all such activity originates from, and is led by, members.
During the virus thing, we were blessed with many visitors who attended our church due to their churches being closed. Eventually, many of these visitors joined our Congregation. In talking w some of these people, I discovered that many had attended their former churches out of habit, many for decades. When they experienced what a few named as ‘a real church’, they understood what had been missing in their former churches.
Our attendance has doubled in the last 3 years, and I believe it is because people are hungry for the Word, hungry for Truth, and hungry for hope. These should be found in a true church.
Finally, in searching for a church, the internet is your friend. A proper church will give the searcher a v good idea of where their priorities stand. Some I have talked to found us on the web, some traveling 40 minutes one way to join us.
We have a vibrant community, w many youth, many young families, some quite large, and as you may imagine our members are committed to either home schooling or Christian Academies. Yet we oldsters are welcome and active participants.
I encourage you to explore the web, as you will soon find that churches give you Plenty of Information to either see them as potentially viable churches or to discard them as superficial and thus unworthy of any notice. I learned of this church through the brother of a friend, explored their website, and began attending about 10 years ago. I am so very grateful that God led me to know of this church. I pray you will also be so blessed.

Valerie, I am thankful every day. I am by nature a loner, and my social interactions are minimal. Since I began attending this church, I have developed a love for the family of God which I in no way anticipated. In addition, I have made a few good friends, which is also an unanticipated blessing. My entire attitude about people has been changed, after many decades of avoiding any meaningful interaction with others. God can salvage anyone.
btw, Congrats on the new grandchild! And I am so glad they were able to come home quickly. God’s timing with the housing situation is one I have witnessed before, yet He continues to amaze me.
Piper I think I am wired a bit like you too, as a loner, especially since parenting. I’m glad that you’ve had such beneficial experiences with church. That’s a huge blessing & not to be taken lightly ❤
On the housing front they are to have their City Inspection to Hopefully get their C of O this afternoon, after taking the baby to the pediatrician this morning. The house is in complete upheaval & has every outlet cover, switch plate, & air duct grate off the walls. They were planning to put them all back in place before the inspection as well as cut the grass (they borrowed our mower last night). Marshall’s uncle, an electrician who was helping them on multiple aspects of their C of O list, was supposed to come by last night to assist. HOPEfully this All will go smoothly but it’s still a Big Day for them…
