But as usual, AT&T’s customer service sucks.
They claim there is no problem in our area.
Hmmm….I’m currently on AT&T internet — and ComCast tried to charge me THREE DIFFERENT TIMES over the course of seven months for their outdated crud equipment — for which I had a receipt from their service center.
About four months after THAT, a guy was going door-to-door to have people switch to ComCast. I told him that the reason it was a surprisingly hard sell is because their back-end are crooks — and gave examples and receipts.
Sorry, my exposition neglected to mention — I switched to the current AT&T setup after having been a ComCast customer for some years, after having been an AT&T customer. The space above the coats in my entry-hall coat closet is a miniature data center, and I can route anything from the drop to anywhere in the house (and back) up there — so switching is no big deal. So, AT&T came up with a great deal and I decided to switch…..and ComCast decided to be massive jerks and claim I’d stolen their useless outdated hardware (my internal hardware is gigabit). Then they hire some poor guy to go door-to-door and sell their “better” setup. Trying to bill me three times for obsolete hardware I’d already turned in kind-of poisons that opportunity.
I know of a fellow that has used the “we are older seniors and don’t use much data” line with both the local cable and fiber services. Somehow he has talked both of them into very low monthly rates. He uses them with a load balancing router so neither one sees big amounts of traffic on a typical day. And when one or the other goes out his home network never misses a beat.

An update on voting laws here in Utah for all my Qtree friends – The state legislature just passed a new law this last week making ballot harvesting ILLEGAL in the state. We have had mail in voting for several years now. I personally spoke with our elections clerks on the procedures Utah employs – safety restrictions in place, etc. As far as I can tell, they have a very good process in place. I think for the general election, we will have the option to vote in person as well as in the past. But, I am heartened to hear that our legislature is being proactive in implementing legal guidelines as opposed to the assumption that ballot harvesting in the state was not permitted. I won’t go into detail about our mail in voting procedures because this post would be too long, but apparently, other state governments call Utah to understand our system and try to imitate it. I would urge each of you to call your own elections office and speak with them personally if you have any questions about regulations and procedures within your own state.

Since the Postal Union endorsed Biden…there is a huge conflict-of-interest in letting the Post Office have any control over our voting!
Wheatie – one of the systems in place here in Utah is that the post office never touches a single ballot. They are all put in special election ballot boxes, picked up and counted by election officials only. The post office never gets their hands on these ballots. Lots of other safeguards in place as well.

Anyway…however they do it, as long as the postal employees don’t touch them, then that’s a good plan.
Wheatie – special scanning machines must match the signature on the completed ballot with the signature on the registered voter’s driver’s license. If the signatures don’t match, your vote doesn’t count… U.S. postal service has NOTHING to do with collection of ballots or counting – nothing. It is all done by the county election clerk and their staff. Ballots are deposited in special locked collection boxes – nothing to do with the postal service at all.
Trying to understand what you are saying about mail clerks not touching…my concern is the mail person that picks up from your mailbox and can easily dump them before they teach the mail sorting area.
It’s heartening that at least SOME states are trying to address this.

maybe I’m reading it wrong, but it seems there are separate boxes for votes–you just don’t put them in the general mail…you have to put it in a ballot box to “mail it”…where it can only be accessed by election officials.

The ballots are deposited by each individual voter in a locked collection box that has nothing to do with the U.S. Postal service. Elections committee and their staff are the ONLY people that ever physically touch the ballots aside from the original registered voter who deposits it in the special locked election box. Ballots are mailed out ONLY to registered voters who have a current driver’s license. The signature on the DL is scanned by a special scanner. If it doesn’t match the voter’s signature on the returned and completed ballot, the voter is contacted and asked to come down and verify his signature. If the signatures don’t match, the vote is discarded. Several other security features in play as well.

Answering Pat’s post…I doubt very much the debt-ridden USPS would install millions of “election” boxes….and I’m equally sure the Post Master General would not approve such a thing. They might as well put up flashing red lights over such boxes that say…”destroy me!”
Thing is, if you have to go to the post office to put your ballot in a special slot…how is that different than voting in person? The whole idea was supposedly (!) to help those afraid of going outside because of COVID. You know, the same people that go to the grocery stores without any problems.

Teagan, When my State (WA) enacted a “mail-in” ballots, the drop boxes appeared at surprisingly convenient locations, all locations listed online. Mine for instance is at the Library just down the street. No USPS use by most folks.
in 2016, for 2 nights, the line of cars waiting to drop off ballots went far down the residential street…don’t think people wanted to use USPS.
That being said, cheating is Rampant here, so who knows who actually empties these boxes when…or how they are handled.
I do know the vote counting stations discriminate against R observers. Several friends have tried to volunteer as R observers and have been told, We have all the observers we need.

The F-35 is a piece of garbage.
Slather all the lipstick you want on it, it’s still a pig that never should have made it into production.
How bad is it? It was supposed to replace the A-10 Warthog, for example, and the $$ saved would more than offset the total cost of the F-35 program. But the 35 performed so poorly in comparison to the A-10 that plans to retire the A-10 were scrapped all together. And that’s just one example of many.
Multi-role aircraft suck, because they are mediocre at everything they are supposed to be able to do, but are a master of none.
This video…and others like it…are propaganda rah-rah pieces produced by the manufacturer (Lockheed Martin) designed to get people to overlook the above or forget about it altogether.

the money saved by retiring the A-10 would significantly defray the total cost of the F 35 program…not more than offset it.
There were a couple of good ideas in there, buried under an avalanche of implementation miscues. For example, it would be really handy for all operational planes to share the same software platform, informational awareness and presentation, and (as appropriate) command and control…..and having all sensors on all planes share a common picture. That, if done right, would be really cool and worth some effort.

In the meantime — “One Airframe to Rule Them All, One Airframe to Hide Them” is clearly just bunkum. And, yes, the whole, “we’re going to make a whole lot of cellphones, so we can use some as doorbells and some as TV remote controls” meme is a known loser — a cellphone will never be more than a “C” as a doorbell or TV control, and cheaper devices can certainly fill those functions and deserve an “A”.

Just a reminder, the Pentagon ordered a bunch of F-15s. Yes, it’s been updated, but, so far, anyway, hasn’t been replaced.
This was, in large part, a very long-range strategic decision made to keep multiple aircraft manufacturers and production lines in operation. Far cheaper to retool a production line decades from now than to build one from scratch.
FG&C, this is off topic but Carlos had something in a post about the DC-3 and B-52 having infinite fatigue life. Is this pretty damn near accurate? Watched lots of DC-6 come and go at Idlewild all those years ago.

How can one get a ride on a B-52? I know it’s probably impossible. I’d just like to be able to see one. My husband was able to get the last seat on a B-17 two summers ago – at a local airport right near us.

What I have read is that transformers are mostly made in Chyna, have long lead times, and have started lots of fires when they fail. A friend watched one fail from her kitchen window a few years ago. A branch fell onto the lines, the transformer performed as designed and put a pulse of higher power onto the lines to clear the debris, and then it just blew up. Circuitry failed and whole thing was in flames.

Hello everybody, I’m sending this from my phone since I can’t use a computer until I’m medically cleared. I blacked out and fell from heat exhaustion a couple days ago and am recovering at home. Lots of bruises and a bunch of staples in the back of my head but thank God no broken bones or brain damage.
What I can do is listen to the radio via Alexa.
Many stations — WLW, WSB, WJR, WRVA, WHAS, WBZ, KDKA —are playing Joe Biden ads about how POTUS can’t lead the country and that Biden is “ready to lead”.
The DNC is running other ads, obviously spoken by Black people, saying that POTUS has failed the Black community in every way. One ad that runs on WJR has a Black pastor blaming POTUS for his empty church because POTUS hasn’t taken care of the pandemic.
Now here’s the situation with this horrible allegation that POTUS called dead American soldiers “losers”. And that Gen. Kelly has “no comment”. A “commentator” on WHAS today said that the allegation is true but offered no proof.
I also heard today on WLW that the Biden campaign is coming out tomorrow with ads saying that POTUS is unfit to be Commander in Chief.
I believe that every hour the RNC doesn’t have a barrage of radio and social media ads that completely debunk this allegation, that provides more “ammunition” for the DNC. Where’s Brad Parscale?
There are still millions of Americans who listen to radio. The RNC is behind the 8-ball on this, big-time.

My neighbor, who celebrated his 90th birthday just two days ago, dropped by a while back. We were just chatting, and he mentioned — ever notice that there aren’t any mechanics these days, just parts swappers?
And it’s true. Nobody looks to make a part work — just change it out.
Fix-it shop’s are a thing of the past as well.
That’s an unfair criticism. It is very difficult to obtain parts to repair auto components anymore. Plus it is not cost effective and you know who actually sets prices on car repairs, don’t you? That’s right; the customer. Price it too high and he/she will simply go elsewhere or hit the junkyards.
You can thank govt regulations and China trade policies for this situation. As a retired mechanic, I truly miss the days when an experienced ear could identify the malfunction. Nowadays it’s some computer code.
SO correct pGroup. Three of our four pick-up are 1993 and older. All three are running fine thanks to our great mechanic. The fourth is a Ford Ranger with a computer. It has been sitting in the drive for two years. We had hoped to have the $$$ to repair it this year but then the CCP Corona crud hit.
We are FINALLY seeing a bit better cash flow so off it goes to our mechanic to get it to the point we can at least use it to haul feed around the farm. With the computer signalling some sort of problem we can not get it inspected for road use and we are not about to pay for a new computer.
(I happen to hate that truck. It is a gas gussler with no trailer hauling ability.)

I know that the length of time a mare is exposed to blue light determines whether she will come into heat and can be bred. This is very important to the racing industry who want a foal born as close to January 1st as possible so they are a full two years and not a year and a 1/2 when they start racing.

our ongoing saga with nature this year continues…
we’ve been noticing that the leaves on our fenced in (4 feet high fence) grapevines are disappearing. the vines are still there, the grape bunches, and the leaf steams are there but the big green (and apparently tasty) leaves are disappearing. we have occasional leaf damage to insects but they leave a leaf skeleton so to speak and this is not that.
this morning I was upstairs (the bedroom has the only windows facing the grapevines) and I saw a deer INSIDE the fencing. in 13 years, the deer have never gone inside the fence–wouldn’t even know how they would.
I called to hubby, which the deer apparently heard. she looked up at us and ducked under the rows of vines and LEAPT over the 4 ft high fence…
sigh…

Gail, when I was out in the country, I looked for months for a book discussing deer deterrents.
Finally found one. The opening sentence of this book was, “Deer will eat anything except red brick.” So, I bought that one.
This is the method of protecting crops/young trees that was suggested…and we had Great success with it!
Horse fencing material sections, material anodized AFTER spot welding, should be laid on the ground surrounding new plantings, in this case, young trees, and the deer will not place their feet on the fencing.
We experimented with suitable patterns, thinking the deer would eventually ignore their instincts, but of all the methods we tried, this was the only one which succeeded.
The sections of our fencing were only 4 ft, but this was just enough distance to keep them from reaching foliage.
As our fruit trees grew, one year we added another section, to increase the distance from the expanding foliage.
Are the grapes ripe yet? If not that’s why there still there would be my guess. When I lived in the grape country of NY they would eat the neighbors grapes.

but the tomatoes are the one thing in the garden that nothing has touched this year! the squirrels eat the zucchini flowers…and now they’re ripping out the corn stalks (our corn was pathetic sure but still) and they take 2 nibbles out the corn and toss it and rip out another! the spinach never came up and the carrot seeds (bright red seeds) attracted the birds as I was planting and only 3 carrots came up! sigh…

One of the side effects of the covid-virus, social distancing, and working from home (provided you still have a job) and working form home is a marked rise in depression and a corresponding weakening of customary friendship ties. I wonder how many friendships have faded during our extended emergency and how many may not recover once the covid-hysteria is over and society returns to a semblance of normal. A greater tragedy than the virus, it seems to me, is the loss of good friends who, for various reason, simply fade away. I’m fortunate to have a group of close friends that I’ve know for a good part of my adult life. I’m pleased to say, and more than bit bit blessed, that we’re as tight as ever. I hope the same is true for all my Treeper friends.

Whatever it is that supposedly hit it would have to be travelling at least a thousand miles per second, since it seems to be crossing a distance that is the moons width every second (and is obviously, as far away as the moon). AND would not leave a visible trail like that (it’s not going through the atmosphere).
The fastest any man-made macroscopic object has ever gone is maybe 20 miles per second. A thousand (or two thousand) miles an hour is ridiculously fast for objects out in space; it would just about have to be a product of intelligent life–and if they can do that, we’d better not piss them off–you just saw their weapon in action.
Definitely CGI or it would be all over the news.
Just looked it up–the fastest we’ve ever managed to get a spacecraft to go is almost 44 miles per second…and that’s not how fast it was going when we launched it, rather that’s how fast it got when it was near the sun (the sun, pulling on it, had sped it up). This was the Helios 2 spacecraft.
The earth’s motion in its orbit can help out too, if you’re measuring relative to the sun instead of the earth. We were able to get a probe to Pluto largely with the help of our orbital speed. We launched it at something like 16 km/second but the Earth is moving at 25 km/sec in its orbit, total 41 km/sec (which is fast enough to escape the Sun permanently). That’s fast enough to get to Pluto by itself but we did a “gravitational slingshot” maneuver off Jupiter to gain some speed and save about five years’ travel time. That 16 km/second is the fastest we’ve ever directly made anything “go” relative to us here on Earth.

My suspect gut bug early in the year devolved into a new symptom, reflux. Beginning of April I read that Pepcid AC worked against viruses at higher dosing and tried it. Within 3 weeks all gone. Only took it after a bout of reflux. Maybe a couple times a week after the first few days. Quite happy it was a simple remedy.

In Germany most bathrooms have all year around windows open . I like that and when not to hot I open all widows in my home even in the winter. Some habits from the old country never fade. My daughter does the same the spouses have a problem with my sons to do that. 🙄🤣
In Japan, the toilets are completely separate from the bathing facilities ( opposite parts of the house) and it’s customary you change shoes (slippers) when you use that tiny room. The Japanese are very, very conscious of contamination…literally in every aspect of their lives.

I took an Lyft to the airport last week. The driver was a black 30 year old from PA who was active duty stationed at Ft. Hood but driving down in the city for extra cash. I asked him how many tours he had done in the sandbox. “Three, sir.” I then asked him if he had heard Pres. Trump was getting us out of there. “Yes sir, I have.” So I asked him how he felt about that.
“The same way everyone I know does. The president is a great man and we are grateful to him.”

I may not have liked him, by the time his administration finished, but he was Commander in Chief, and had done nothing to allow me to LEGALLY question the legality of any order, duty, etc. Upholding Obama’s presidency WAS upholding the Constitution.
On both November 3 and January 20, I expect a LEGAL, FAIR, and JUSTLY DECIDED retention or transfer of power. No coup, including a MEDIA COUP, SLOW COUP, or CHEAT COUP will be respected by me.
If the Democrats blur this transition too much, they will draw the KARMA they so justly deserve.

It’s actually a really big deal that affects anyone who travels by air. The thing is…
Ya can’t just park aircraft and furlough crews without incurring a TREMENDOUS cost to bring them back online later.
“Currency” is a big word in aviation. (ie. current, up-to-date).
Say you own a brand new airplane, fully certified and completely up to date on all maintenance. It’s pristine. And you leave it sit for a full year, not flying it once. Guess what? It is now “out of currency”. You’ll have to pay for a full and complete annual maintenance check before you can fly it even though you haven’t flown it at all in the previous year and it has sat protected inside a secure hanger the entire time.
And your pilots? They’ll have to go through “recurrency” training because if they aren’t flying their skills are degrading.
Those annual Mx checks are very expensive. The bigger and more complex the aircraft, the more difficult, extensive, and costly the Mx check is.
And the simulators to get your pilots recurrent? You have a MAJOR headache there, because sims can cost even more than the aircraft type they simulate. So they are scarce. So much so that pre-WuFlu they were running 24/7/365 just to keep up with demand. Pilots were literally going in for training sessions at 2, 3, and 4 AM.
Now multiply this by thousands of aircraft and pilots.
If dims wanted to cause a massive rise in the cost of air travel this is the way to do it.

This is why airlines BURN through capital when their fleets are sitting idle with no paying passengers flying in them, generating offsetting revenue to pay for all the expenses of aviation.
And as I mentioned, parking aircraft fleets comes with it’s own set of downstream issues when you want to bring them and their crews back into service.
This is why Congress made a boatload of $$ available to the airlines in the CARES Act. But…
….that money runs out at the end of this month!!
We desperately need an extension to the act NOW, or else the airlines will be FORCED to start furloughing pilots and putting planes into long-term storage.
Of course, Republicans and POTUS are 100% on board with an extension of the CARES Act…

Where is it that those who are to represent the people in this country receive delegated authority to implement that which is unconstitutional? The Constitution is the supreme law of the land (Article 6, Section 2). They have reversed their roles in taking on the position of being the employer rather than the employee (John 15:20).
When speaking of the US Constitution, do remember that those who are to serve the people in this country are to “support the Constitution,” not tear it down in an attempt to recreate it in the image of a country that is foreign to our own. Yet, that is, in fact, what is taking place today in America (Isaiah 42:21; Hebrews 10:7; Article 6, Section 6 US Constitution).

When you reply to a comment there’s an option on bottom left under reply box. Sometimes I hit that by accident. Turn it on then off. Go back into settings, turn that one on, save, then off and save. It may take several times of doing both to clear.

On this day in 1974, Pres. Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon for any crimes he might have committed related to Watergate, demonstrating that a president can pardon someone who has not been convicted of crime.

You should also note: “establishing” rather than “demonstrating” — it’s not something that was just lying around in a disused lavatory in the basement, behind a sign that said “Beware of the Leopard.” He made it up, and it was allowed to stick.
Actually, it was “lying around,” in Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution:
“[The President] shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”
And then in 1866 SCOTUS ruled that pardons may be granted before conviction.

Nonetheless, it was found that Secretary Ben Carson improperly used Federal transportation to go to Western Nevada in order to ‘shoot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.’ Courts upheld his conviction.”
If one goes by precedent, each rare occurrence set the stage for the next. Pres. Ford had plenty of evidence to show that presidential pardons for people not convicted of crimes are allowed, and he further demonstrated that by pardoning Nixon; and no one challenged his authority to do so.
I don’t see how, with a SCOTUS decision specifically stating that a person does not have to have been convicted of a crime to be pardoned, one could then say that Pres. Ford established that practice. There is clear precedent. The SCOTUS decision does not refer to Civil War circumstances; it speaks in general terms about the power of the president.

The item we saw was high in the sky..we saw it over the tree tops.
If you load Stellarium (note below), set it to your location (which I don’t know), you can roll it back in time to see what satellites may have been there when you were seeing something. It accesses a database from NORAD, which should cover all human nonmilitary satellites, and a chunk of foreign military.

Looking due south, from close to your location, I’m seeing Saturn and Jupiter about 45 degrees up from the horizon.
The tool I’m using is Stellarium. I set it to (hopefully) your time zone and coordinates of 38° 37′ 28.27″ N, 90° 11′ 4.96″ W. Those should be two of the brightest objects immediately south of you at the moment.
Incidentally, although I’ve used the program before, it wasn’t loaded on this computer when I asked how high the object appeared off the horizon. And, yes, it includes NORAD’s satellite collection in its view.

I’ll have to find some binoculars or something with a decent lens. I was outside with the dog when I saw it, and knew it was more than just a star or airplane. (those are easy to spot with the flashing lights).
By the time you see rings, you’re getting close to being able to see some of its moons — Titan, Rhea, Iapetus, and Dione. Over time, it should be drifting off slowly to your right (toward the SW).
If you were looking more straight up, it might be Altair — but both Jupiter and Saturn should be brighter.
Jupiter is supposed to be about 12 times brighter than Saturn, only being outshone by Venus, which is out of the picture. So, probably Jupiter.
Just ’cause I found it — WD is advertising some of its 7200 rpm drives as “5400 RPM class”, because (a) actual 5400 rpm drives tend to use less energy and produce less noise, and (b) they’re data-stacking method of storage on the drive isn’t as fast as a nominal 7200 rpm drive should be.

Sincere question. Anyone KNOW the real answer?? Iv looked online but can’t find an answer.
If someone requests a mail in or even absentee ballot, does that mean their name will NOT be listed in the voting rolls at the in person point to vote polling location?
What if the person requested a mail in, or even absentee, ballot, but never sent it in, and their name is not in that rolls book at their in person point of voting station?? Are they then unable to vote?
What if their name IS still in the rolls book at the in person point of voting polling station, and they DID mail in the absentee or mail in ballot??? They then are voting twice.
Can anyone explain the way this all works?? I fear such cheating in the most important of votes in my lifetime.

I vote absentee. If I were to go to my polling place, they would look me up and see that I am absentee. They can check to see if my ballot was mailed to me. If I say I didnt get it, they are supposed to take that ballot, count it as lost or spoiled, then re-issue a ballot or allow me to vote in person. As Ive said before, I fill out my ballot, keep the tracking stub, and HAND DELIVER TO THE COUNTY REGISTRAR. The actual place they count them, not the box drop off.
I then check to see if my ballot was received and counted with my ballot number.
Anything past that I dont know to help you.

Your state and or county (preferably county) should have definitive guidance for this. If not or you can’t find where they put it then here are suggestions.
If you are planning on going to the in person voting site and have your ballot (mail in or absentee) leave the envelope unopened and surrender it there after your sure you can vote in person. (personally I’d like to see the unopened, surrendered ballot destroyed in your presence even if it does not bear your signature).
If you already opened it and or filled it out and still want to vote in person, again, surrender it there, after ensuring you can vote but treat it like a bad check and write void across the actual ballot, then vote in person.
If they insist that the mail in vote or absentee vote will count and you trust them then either turn it in filled out or demand to vote in person. They should be able to deal with you either way.
If you sent it in but have not figured a way to track it and your name is still on the list, just vote when you show up in person. You can let them know you have not been able to track the vote and if they can’t show you it’s received they should let you vote. If they don’t let you vote and you still don’t know if the mail in or absentee ballot is in their possession then demand a provisional ballot.
This last may seem a bit slippery. Now what the President has said is to just vote and it’s up to the state to determine if you already voted earlier. This is likely true and only points out the flaws in the system and he likely knows the democrats take advantage of this, knowing that they will not be prosecuted whether they have double voted or not as it is the states responsibility to determine which of your two votes should count. Seems rational to me, though it may not pass the ethical test unless you are honestly in doubt that your mail in or absentee ballot is being counted. Perhaps others might like to address this as this is the most slippery solution of those listed here. I’m unaware that the President has corrected his assertion at this time, though it was loosely addressed by others. Meanwhile each state likely has tighter or laxer laws pertaining to this which is the purpose I assume for you asking.
