Now, string it all together, “MUN-row…… LWEEZ-i-ana” and you’ve got it. In New Orleans, the accent is more like Brooklyn or Boston, but in Monroe, the accent has a southern lilt ….. but faster. Monroe is the halfway point between Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Shreveport, Louisiana, and so is their culture. Monroe is a cross between the ruggedness made famous by the Duck Dynasty guys in Shreveport – with a healthy dose of southern gentility from Vicksburg. If we widened our view, Monroe would be the halfway point between Atlanta, Georgia, and Dallas Texas, if we stayed on I-20.
Monroe is located in the NE part of Louisiana, and as we should know by now,………. a brilliant campaign stop for the Trump Team, to turn out the vote and get rid of incumbent Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards. This part of the country never receives any attention. A Presidential trip to Monroe is mind-numbing, people will bring their children to see this. Yet, if these voters turn out……. we could easily tip an election. Whoever is planning these Presidential stops deserves a LOT of credit. Expect to see a big turnout from southern Arkansas and Mississippi as well, but we’re here to elect Eddie Rispone the new Governor of Louisiana.
The MAGA/KAG Rally will be held at the Monroe Civic Center which seats about 7600, + more on the floor. Although it was built in 1965, it’s state-of-the-art now, and home to the Bayou Beast Indoor Football team and the Monroe Moccasins Hockey Team.
Monroe, Louisiana has a population of about 48,000, split by the Ouachita River (pronounced “WATCH-i-taw”) with West Monroe (about 13,000) on the other bank of the river. Population is declining, after reaching a peak of 57000 in 1980. The Monroe METRO area has a population of about 200K. When the factories leave for China, the youngest generation leaves for larger cities in search of opportunity. Any wonder they voted for Donald Trump?
As for the population demo breakdown, in 2010, the city was 63.9% black and 33.4% white, with about 1% of Latino or Asian. There is no Bloomingdales, Saks, or Tiffany’s, in Monroe, Louisiana, although they have a large University and a terrific hospital system. Don’t expect too much Twitter activity either. At this time of the year, the cotton crop is in, maintenance is being performed on machinery, and we’re all watching the annual migration of fowl down the Mississippi River (a wondrous site). We’re ready for cooler rainy days and getting prepared for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Fascinating History of Monroe and how regular Americans built America:
In 1894, Joseph A. Biedenharn moved from Monroe to Vicksburg to start a Candy Company. He figured out how to bottle a popular local sweet drink called Coca Cola. Until Biedenharn, the drink was only available at a soda fountain. Here’s the original machine.
Biedenharn was smart, however, he delivered bottled drinks to other stores, begetting distributorships, a bottling system which changed the world, and vast wealth for those who invested. For a while, in my youth, I dated a young scion of one of the families…. whose name was…. TAB. Sound familiar?
But that’s not the end of the story. Biedenharn’s son was named Malcolm. While dad prospered with Coca Cola, and the invention of the automobile made delivery and expansion easier, Malcolm was home managing the family farm. The entire region faced devastating losses from the Boll Weevil which wiped out the cotton crop…… and beget the migration of 1.5 MILLION Black Americans to northern cities.
One day, Malcolm ran into the local Ouachita AG Agent named Collett Woolman, who was testing insecticides at a local Agriculture Experimental Station. Probably with a little money from dad, the two men, Woolman and Malcolm Biedenharn came up with the idea of “crop dusting” from small planes ……. “Crop dusting” was born and the idea spread quickly, saving the fields, farms, and families.

A few decades later, Delta Dusters, the guys who invented crop dusting, was so successful, it grew into Delta Airlines.
Which is probably why you’ll never see a Pepsi product on a Delta flight.
Thus, the Biedenharn family changed the world as we know it. It started simply, “How do I enjoy this sweet drink at home or on a picnic?”, and led to a system of bottling and distribution which made the world healthier, saved lives. The son, Malcolm, had the same innovative spirit, “How do we stop the boll weevil?” With a little help from other like-minded fellows, he figured out a way to conquer the problem.
Doing nothing was easy…. but “doing nothing” isn’t ….. American, is it?
For years, we heard our leadership speak of the “managed decline” of the United States and the “inevitable rise” of China. Who thought that was a good idea? How did that happen? Why in the hell would Americans ever settle for a decline…… of anything? Yet, for decades, we did. We slept ….. and accepted our fate….. doing…. nothing.
Until this guy came along….. the son of Fred Trump.
Fred Trump was successful, like Joseph Biedenharn, and their sons could have basked in the wealth, married, had kids, and lived well. Yet, these sons didn’t rest on their parents’ successes. Something……. indeed, something sparked Malcolm Biedenharn and Donald Trump to go further, to surpass their father’s wildest expectations and change the world. What happened to these two sons?
As parents, we often wonder how to guide our children. We juggle our emotions between the love and comfort of our children or the decision to stop, let them fail, teach them how to rebound, excel, fight back, learn, and develop resiliency. It’s a tough call as a parent. Yet, how do we instill in our children that magical spark, spirit, determination, curiosity, and persistence, of someone like a Malcolm Biedenharn or a Donald Trump?
What would be THAT formula? If we could figure it out, and “bottle” it…… it would sell.
But …… maybe we didn’t need a magical formula after all. For a few decades, the globalists and media worked on us. They gutted the heartland, changed our school systems, sent our children to endless wars, added debt load, and made families unimportant. As President Trump said in Kentucky (thank you A Fort):

That was before cocaine was declared an illegal drug.

Last year for Thanksgiving, I wanted to make stuffed Mirlitons.
Big T had no idea what a Mirliton was.
I tried to explain — but could not find any locally, I told him.
Well, over the years, I’ve introduced him to LOTS of food he never heard about before, and Big T has come to accept….. if I am on a mission for a particular ingredient……. he is the prime beneficiary.
Unknown to me, he searched and searched all over Memphis region for Mirlitons.
He made it his quest. I had forgotten all about it.
He finally told me about his search.
He was sad.
A great food, he would never experience, he had built it up in his mind as the greatest thing I would ever make.
I made the crawfish gravy and he was happy, but still wistful about Mirlitons.

I make stuffed eggplant once in a while, but is the miriliton similar to the eggplant in taste, texture?
Mirliton texture is somewhere between a summer squash and a winter squash. Scoop it out, chop, steam or sauté the scooped pieces, mix with seafood, onions, etc. top with cheese and bread crumbs…bake until brown and bubbly.
TY, now I have to check the carb count before I buy them. They sound interesting.
The squash are low carb – it’s the trimmings and stuffings that add calories. You can cut it a lot from the recipes, using oil, low fat cheese, etc.
My stepmother was an outstanding cook. Taught me that food was social and fun. Huge influence. She used to make it with a beurre blanc sauce/mix with a brown gravy and jazzed up with cajun spice. Drizzled over the mirlitons.

We really enjoyed learning about La, as well. A few years ago, we played the Champions Club outside of Chattanooga. As we remember, was built by a grandson of the “Coke” dynasty….out of Atlanta and supposedly from the family that had the sole distributorship and put Coke into vending machines. The name wasn’t Biedenharn….so now I’m curious and will have to delve into memory and Internet to connect the dots.
The course, BTW, might have been one of the most luxuriously maintained we’ve had the pleasure to play anywhere in the world….fairways were turf, not seeded, and it was like walking on a very plush rug.

Okay, have to tell you a story about a trip to Monroe.
Grab a cup of coffee…..
I was a high school sophomore, went to the biggest school in the state, outside New Orleans, over 5K kids, size of a small college. We were running for student council slots, and it was the first year for co-ed male and female high schools. So, there was a lot of power struggle between the girls and the guys.
Midst of campaign, and a junior guy decided he liked me. At a Lakefront party, he chased me, threw me into the back of a car, and kissed me. Oh my. I wriggled out of the car, spitting and scratching. Today, he would have been arrested, but I was definitely man-handled and he had a buddy who helped in stuff me into the car. They threw me around like I was a ragdoll.
Well, a mini-scandal broke out at the school.
I was furious, my girlfriends wouldn’t talk to his guys, etc. I was really mad, and my reputation was “tainted”, which made me MORE angry.
Within a week or two, animosity reached a crescendo….. same guy came up to my locker and apologized, sincerely, a long and drawn out apology. It was a “stand up” move. I was taken aback and accepted the apology. He walked me to class, and as we walked together….. people fell out on both sides, stunned.
From then on, we ruled.
Pretty weird, eh?
We worked together throughout high school and did extraordinary things never done before. He was a total “alpha” and the two of us were quite an alliance. My Dad dreamed of us married with kids. We would have been a perfect couple, but we never dated.
We became friends, great friends, still best buddies today, spend occasional holidays together, over 40yrs later.
In high school, maybe a month after our incident, he was the first of our “group” to buy his own car, an amber brown PINTO with no air conditioning, but he paid for it all himself. He left the dealership and came straight to my house to show me. He was beaming and so proud. My Dad immediately took over, gave him elegant (not much) pinstripes and a great radio/8track installed by the end of the evening…… In the days that followed, he would cross town, pick me up for school, even though I could see the school from my front yard. We went everywhere together.
With a set of wheels……. that meant we had to travel.
His extended family was from Monroe.
Thanksgiving approached and he was whining and moaning about the family trip to Monroe. His parents had divorced, which meant he would go to mom’s side – which was right next door to his dad’s side. He was worried for his mom, and younger sister. He complained about all the aunts and uncles, cousins who were weird. I listened on the edge of my seat. Mine was a smalllllllllll family, with almost no drama. We were boring. I told him I wanted to go with him to Monroe…… and we should leave early, weekend before Thanksgiving, skipping the Monday-Tuesday we should have been in school.
He was confused at first, but then his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. We were keen for a great adventure, everything was fun for us, but this was a real road trip!!! “We” asked Dad if I could go, and Dad was thrilled, hoping I might come to my senses and fall in love.
I packed a cooler for the trip. Dad and my friend packed the car. Dad installed a radar detector and presented him with a toolkit, (an envelope with extra cash he quietly gave) in case we had car trouble, all kinds of instructions…… and off we went in the Pinto! We had four tapes in the car, AC/DC, Boston, Donna Summer, and Barry Manilow.
If you look at the middle of the map of Louisiana, you can see Alexandria – known to the natives as “Alec”. We had to stop there to see extended family. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. Enormous plantation house, and so many people, and no one sat still. There were at least 20 people at the table for dinner. Gosh, we raked leaves, cleaned gutters on the shops, shelled pecans, helped cook, wash dishes, …… I tumbled into bed, nail polish ruined, exhausted, and happy as a clam.
After breakfast, we were off to Monroe, to Aunt Bette’s house. Along the way, we sang, laughed, and had a wonderful time. The closer we came to Monroe, the more nervous he was. I hugged and nudged him, but I didn’t really understand. He was going to be fine. My buddy tried to give me the family history and old grudges, but it all melded together. How could anyone keep up with that much gossip? Families love each other, but I’ve never been surprised by how much they can hurt one another.
Before we landed at Aunt Bette’s, he took me to a secret spot on the river he used to go to as a boy. My GOD, it was beautiful, and silent, except birds and a faint hum of a current in the river. He didn’t want to leave. Lot of apprehension in him… turmoil. Glad I was there, he was teaching me how to be a true friend. He tried to kiss me again but I wasn’t ready. Awkward. We were arriving at Aunt Bette’s days before his mother and sister, so we could lay the groundwork with the family. I adored his sister and mom (I still use her recipe for meatballs).
Apparently the cousins in Alec had called the house in Monroe when we left, to give our estimated time of arrival and a full report on me and my guy. When we took the side trip to the river, we were late. They were worried and sitting on side door, pitched like cobras and waiting for our arrival.
Three women met us in the driveway, all his aunts, his mom’s sisters.
They were like a gaggle of crows, huge hugs, but all talking at the same time!
They picked me apart from my shoes to the top of my head. We were good friends but they assumed there was something going on between us………. which helped him, “Woohoo, Little “X” bringing home a girl…”. All of a sudden, they looked at him as a man, not a kid. I frowned. He was 6’3″ and maybe 220lbs…….. definitely not a kid anymore. My defensive mechanism kicked in….. strongly. I saw their not-so-good-natured ribbing hurt my guy, and it all made sense. No wonder he didn’t want to be here. Picked up on it right away and did not correct them — happy to play girlfriend for the week. Before he could say a word, I tucked my arm into his elbow and instantly his back straightened like a natural reflex. Whatever my buddy needed to get through was fine with me – but be damned if I would let them harm him.
They barely caught a breath and launched into gossip about his mother and the divorce. There were no secrets between the two of us, but the aunts were not kind. His mom was the oldest of the three. She married well and “moved away” deserting them, …….. generations of resentment there. They were looking to settle the score. Not nice.
The house was spectacular and a hidden gem. Would have made a terrific movie set. Out of the wilderness……. it appeared. Big long driveway, acres and acres, open spaces and then woods. The house was enormous but normal, and not showy or fake in any way, more like a rambling 3 story farmhouse, with cellars and cold storage, rooms for silver and linen, pantries for specific things, sleeping porches, and more and more rooms……. wow, it was cool.
Over the week, I never really figured out who all lived there. There were several houses, aunts and uncles, kids from toddlers to older 90yr olds who still smoked and talked loudly. It was a true holiday, and I was lucky to be there, experience it just once in a lifetime. His dad’s house was close by and their “compound” was “within a gunshot”, and we visited dad’s side as well. More tension. More food. More hugs.
As the women at Aunt Bette’s house were preparing for the feast, we had major problems. The families, his dad’s and mom’s usually had holidays together. Since this was the first year of “The Great Divorce”, they were planning separate feasts…. which presented enormous difficulty. Certain people were usually in charge of various dishes…. and those people were now in the “enemy camp”. It was getting in the way and made people sad. “X” and I offered to go to the other side and pilfer recipes, but they shook their heads….. “No, no one could make pie crust like Mignon…..” and so on….. They were emotional about food, but the food was indicative of the loss of half the family. By the time “X”‘s mom arrived, the families decided to ignore the divorce and still feast together, all for the sake of pies and oyster dressing…. which made my guy even more nervous.
His mom arrived and we stuck to her like glue. Gosh, I loved her. Once minor dustup where I spouted off to the aunts in the kitchen, while we were clearing a table. I would have given ANYTHING for a sister, and was so grateful to be among a big family, I couldn’t understand why they were being mean…. and “picking” at his mom. Could have heard a pin drop. Everyone looked at each other. It was okay. His mom grinned at me, and our relationship was forever cemented that week. His dad did not show up for the weekend, ever, spent Thanksgiving in Florida on a boat with a new girlfriend. Bet he missed that oyster dressing.
After 11,000 trips to the grocery store, the big day came.
I’ve never seen so much food, china and silver in my life. It came from every cabinet and pantry. Had to have stools and ladders to get it all out. Certain dishes and casseroles had to be made, coordinated with specific dishes for presentation, …… and the ovens. The day before, we peeled and skinned 15lbs of clementines…. and then I learned why…. nothing like Trifle with coconut and maraschino cherries. Food from the Gods. The whole thing was nothing short of a full blown symphony. Three tables, at least 50 people, arms over arms, constant chatter, wonderful blessing, and nothing better than being a small cog in a BIG family. Wow.
We left on Friday, to make it home to New Orleans to see my Grandparents, whom he had not met yet…. but they adored like he was one of their own. On the way home, we were tired but all was well. More Barry Manilow on the way home than AC/DC. We always sang at the top of our lungs, no embarrassment. He hated the Manilow, and he looked so funny, as a big guy singing it, but compromised on my behalf. As we hit the 6-10 split he put his hand on mine and said, “I’m never going anywhere without you again.” He meant it. Gosh, it was the first of our dozens of road trips. We traveled everywhere together. Truth was, I was more grateful to him. He taught me so much about family and how to be a real friend.
We went through college, and I moved away. He called and called, but I drifted to NYC then Miami. When I moved back to New Orleans, he was in my driveway within the hour. But I left again a year later. When I married, he was not happy, but brought 200lbs of shrimp for the party. When I had Gunner, he was here the next weekend. When mom committed suicide, I called and stayed with him. As marrying-age adults, we’ve never been single at the same time, and our spouses have learned to understand our friendship. The instant I pick up the phone with him, we never miss a beat.
The years fade. It’s like we were right back on the way to Monroe……
