Note: It is a commandment from the Lord Jesus toward the end of his ministry on earth, so it is pretty important to pay attention. It is also consistent with Old Testament scripture instruction, as He always is. We must love one another. That means we pull out all of the stops for the benefit of one another. No holding back, do just as He does for us. That type of love is intentional, it requires action, it requires giving of ourselves even when it us uncomfortable or even painful.

The cause of Christ cannot be advanced without loving one another as He loved us. Take note, America.

For there is no other way, just trust and obey…

Final Health Updates

Since my authoring is winding down, I thought it would be helpful for some on here for me to update the health situations and progress of wifey and I that are connected to past posts. I apologize in advance for the length of this daily, but there is much to discuss. I hope the information proves helpful to you.

Wifey

As some may remember, my rock star wife went through a rough random eye infection upon return from our Fall Frolic the year Helene hit the area in 2024. The infection that caused the corneal ulcer was a small, white blob in one eye and lab tests were inconclusive. A series of antibiotic drops were prescribed and over several months cleared the infection. However, she had serious lingering vision issues and recovery was slow. After healing the infection her vision only returned to 20/60 corrected using her recently prescribed, pre-infection lenses. She had floaters along with cataracts that the ophthalmologist wanted to correct. Wifey was reluctant due to family members who had limited success with the procedure as well as her being allergic to latex, despite assurances from the doc they could adjust. She has minimal trust in the medical community, so that went nowhere fast.

She told the doc she wanted to try some things first and if she could not improve it, she would consent. He agreed (what else could he say?), but to check back in 6-8 months so that the eyes did not decline too far to be of assistance. We could tell he was skeptical. He looked at me and said, “She is one tough lady, isn’t she?” I just nodded affirmatively. However, that is the moment she decided to take my research about the issues and recommendations to heart. God led her to conclude she should go a different way. Some of the supporting information came from sources and linked information on here for which we are very grateful.

I posted awhile back that we both were using DMSO eye drops. I have slowed the use in recent months, but for over a year now wifey has continued twice per day applications of a 25% concentration with saline or distilled water while using sterile bottles/droppers. She takes a one week break every couple of months, then restarts. In recent months she has added a high quality castor oil that she lightly rubs on the eyelids at bedtime. She has also participated with me in the parasite cleanse using the IVM/Mebendazole combination last summer and an IVM cleanse in the past couple of months.

I am very happy to report that over that period, her vision returned to its formerly good, pre-infection condition. She is now 20/20 corrected with the same lenses. She does not need distance correction, only for reading. Of course this did not happen through traditional means or medicine.

We utilize a highly competent optometry practice. Our chosen optometrist in the practice and assigned tech were amazed at the results after the comprehensive exam that included extensive imaging this month. The doc knew the condition of the previously affected eye as she helped deal with the original infection before passing the case to the ophthalmologist. The formation of cataracts has actually been stopped in its tracks and may have receded somewhat. She no longer has floaters at all. Her eye health has improved to the point of the highly desired “see you in a year unless you need us” stage. That’s a massive win.

But there is MOAR!

Combined with dietary changes described below and daily walks; there has been an interesting, fantastic development. One day she forgot to bring her eyeglasses when we went grocery shopping. Her vision had improved to the point she simply forgot to wear them. It was a sunny day and she put on some wrap sunglasses that cover the eyeglasses that were in the truck. To cut to the chase, her forever present vertigo/Menere’s Disease symptoms disappeared. As I drove I was quietly shocked and secretly elated. No more jumps, twists and and yelps from the passenger seat when big trucks were near or a car approached from another direction at an intersection. Just calm, peaceful riding for a half hour each way.

As we pulled into our driveway, I mentioned it to her and she smiled. She noticed it as well. Now when we go places she may leave her glasses on or take them off if she detects the problem kicking in. Regardless, the trips are much more relaxed and easier on both of us. She had experienced the car motion induced vertigo issues for decades. At one time it got so bad that as a teenager, Daughter had stopped wanting to go on vacations with us because of the distraction and angst.

Trade’s Results

My eye exam was much improved as well. The supposed early cataract formation of a half dozen years ago that my retina specialist diagnosed actually never formed. The dry form macular degeneration diagnosed over a dozen years ago never actually worsened. The floaters have been gone for some time. I did the DMSO off and on for about 6 months once a day. For me the driver for improvement has primarily been IVM, although I am confident the DMSO assisted to some degree. My vision had not changed over the past three years.

After over a year of experimenting by returning to normal lens, I found that the prism lens prescribed for me a few years ago by the old binocular vision specialist doc who helped Grandson #1 so much, were very beneficial in drawing my weak eye with the alleged worse dry macular degeneration back into more balanced vision. As a result I added the prisms back with the new glasses and am gradually adjusting to them very well.

At about 10 years old parasites of some sort got in my eyes; worse in one than the other. From family history records I learned I was given antibiotic drops that were manufactured by Schering-Plough, which was later acquired by Merck. During that time is when the optometrist determined I also had a “lazy eye” in the worse infected one and gave me exercises to retrain it. Whatever was prescribed did clear the infection, but I never really had normal use of the eye and over time I became strongly one eye dominant. The vision in both eyes remained 20/20, so I really did not know to be tested further. I just knew that as a teenager, my vision in baseball and later as an adult in golf was somewhat negatively affected. This was especially true with poor peripheral vision in one eye and was very apparent in vision tests as I hit middle age.

Based on recent exams I am starting to believe that old binocular vision doc knew what he was talking about when he told me I did not have macular degeneration. My symptoms could appear to be MD to other docs, however, it seems to me it is the aftermath from that parasite caused infection as a child. If it is dry MD, there should be even slow progression of the condition. There has not been. It has been in a stable state for a dozen years.

This probably gives credence to how my vision always becomes much sharper the day after taking IVM and why the floaters and early stage formation of cataracts disappeared after using it and DMSO drops. Improvement in eye performance would not be as likely for a MD sufferer. With no changes in the prescribed lenses for vision in three years, I may be on to something good. Will continue to monitor.

I also used a DMSO/aloe vera concoction described below for a couple of months on two stiff, arthritic fingers on one hand that bugged me for years. The condition is gone – no more stiffness.

I still have a bit of tinnitus in one ear that was left over from the Wuhan. The externally applied DSMO method treatment has not impacted it one way or the other. Chiropractic adjustment cut the ringing back about 50% which has been most appreciated. It appears to be nerve/CNS related in some manner. I have no restrictions in movement, so I can turn my head 90 degrees one way and it reduces. I can turn my head the other way and it slightly increases. Weird. Will keep looking at options for improvement.

For the record we no longer have the need to use the excellent chiropractor that helped restore our alignment. She did a great job. All is well and being maintained. However, if needed we will not hesitate to return.

Recently, from recommendations of a couple of knowledgeable medical authors, I concocted a DMSO/pure Aloe Vera gel/essential oil blend to use for arthritis and joint inflammation issues. Wifey also has been using the DMSO with castor oil or my concoction for her arthritic hands/fingers as well as surgically repaired knee. There has been strong improvement in flexibility and appearance. My own flexibility in the lumbar region where I have spinal bone spurs has also improved. Will see how it goes long term, I expect it to go well.

Not bad for a couple of seventy somethings. DMSO and IVM work for us, folks, and not just to ward off COVID with IVM. We will continue to use. Add in the benefits of the high quality castor oil.

IVM clearly works on parasites of various types throughout the body. Its use helps the immune system of the body to do its thing. Wifey uses for cleanses only unless she has a respiratory illness coming on. During her cleanses, she gets the yucky bowel movements associated with her sinus drainage as well as the parasite die off and release. She experiences the under the weather symptoms for a few days. Having already gone through that a couple years ago while continuing to use IVM prophylactically, I no longer experience much, if any, side effects.

The cleanses are possibly contributing to wifey’s lack of vertigo along with the eye improvements. IVM has long been prescribed for river blindness. However, there may be another interesting connection. Over twenty years ago she had an allergist test and treat (shots) her allergies on two occasions and covering a period of five years. The shots provided modest benefits overall. However, from the testing we know she is very allergic to candida albicans, a fungal induced yeast, as well as specific molds, tree pollens, etc. Exposure causes her body to go into histamine overload. It added to her vertigo events due to sinus pressure. For years we kept an epipen handy as well as a bottle of Benadryl. A half dozen years ago her every day had an excessive amount of throat clearing from the sinus drainage. At one point she lost her voice from it for about 6 months. The drainage strongly affected her sleep. At times she was just miserable, in a state of just existing and trying to cope daily.

We live in an environment that has high fungal concentrations due to vegetation and climate. It is what it is and she has suffered all of her life from it. That is until the recent IVM related cleanses that also addressed gut health as a side benefit. Poor gut health can also add to the histamine imbalance. The intentional dietary changes of removing sugar, and addressing her eyes dramatically improved her situation. She is now off all antihistamine drugs and just uses Flonase for the pollen after living on Zyrtec D at times. Her condition is not perfect, but is greatly improved. While still on the subject of eyes, we spoke with the optometry practice staff as patients walked in and out after purchasing bottles of eye vitamins/supplements. We asked and a few buyers and the staff gave rave reviews. The practice did not try to sell it to us. They said they could not keep enough inventory to supply everybody. Turns out it can be ordered direct from the company or Amazon at the essentially the same price. We have been taking for most of this past month. My December follow up exam will determine any personal progress, however, I have reason to hope for a good outcome.

Which leads to the next bit of news. Wifey and I decided it was time to lose some weight for good. We want to be more active to keep up with the grandkids and for me to teach them the game of golf. It was back to full Keto time for me and modified Keto for her. Her goal was to weigh the same as when we married over 40 years ago. My goal was to get to my baseball playing weight in college. I had to lose a bit more than her as a percentage. We have both succeeded. The difference in our health and energy levels has been nothing short of amazing. I kept the exercise to moderate and never went hungry at all. By keeping it to about 6 lbs. per month my body adjusted well along the way. Again, it was about modifying my nutrition to fit my goals and my gut health; not about a diet.

We also wanted to do this to see the effects it had on our blood tests from our physicals. Cholesterol was creeping up each year with both of us, especially with wifey. Her glucose was nearly 20% above the healthy range to go with blood pressure issues that she has dealt with all of her adult life. Wifey also had the goal of weaning slowly off of Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide. We had zero doubts that the former contributed to her cholesterol trending up through the years; it is a little discussed side effect. When she began taking it her cholesterol also began increasing and never decreased again even when controlling her weight and nutrition. She never has liked the way the meds made her feel, but felt she had no alternative. In a previous daily I stated that we felt traditional medicine had won this battle. It turns out it was only a short term benefit that led to even worse average BP and cholesterol as well as spikes in BP and heart rate.. Which would have eventually led to more Big Pharm solutions that would lead her closer to death.

Turns out there was a way for her to exit the “system” that often destroys. The first step was to stop blindly trusting traditional medicine and the related food pyramid. Do your own research and adapt to your situation. Second was to address the nutrition and get to a healthy weight. Third was addressing her eye issues. The eyes are not only the windows to the soul, they interconnect with all the sensory areas of the body. Fourth was to cleanse the body of parasites and work on related gut health. Gut health is not one size or type fits all. Fifth was to become more fit, get the blood circulating daily. The last was to find the right combo of supplements and vitamins that worked specifically for her as she weaned off Big Pharm.

Bingo. We found that last one in Berberine (NOW brand). Other brands may work as well. The BP fell almost immediately after she started on a one third daily dose of it along with her two prescribed meds. No more spikes at all. In fact her BP fell too far. Several mornings when she got up and tested she would be in low 90/low 50 range. So, she cut the doses of prescribed meds in half. Her BP moderated up to 110-120/65-70 and remained there. This went on for a few months with no troublesome spikes. Then she moved to a two thirds dose of Berberine and went off Amlodipine completely. Her BP and heart rate remained stabilized in the same range and she has continued to have zero troublesome spikes. She plans to dump the half dose of Hydrochlorothiazide soon. She will maintain the prescriptions as a precaution until she is in the clear.

All of that was going on at the same time as the DMSO, IVM, castor oil, weight loss, nutrition changes, fitness walks, and so on. Now she is going off the meds, uses Berberine, takes some multi-protein collagen (Ancient Nutrition brand) in her morning coffee, uses Flonase for allergies, no longer suffers vertigo on car trips, sleeps like a log, and smiles a whole lot more. In addition she takes a multi and recently, the VisionEdge Pro eye vitamins.

Happy wife, happy life. So proud of her resolve and success even if we did need to buy her a new wardrobe. It was not expensive, us old folks are not all that picky.

My supplements have been the collagen, Aubergine recommended Nattokinase along with Serrapeptase, and more recently a third of a dose of Berberine leading up to our blood tests. My plan was to get the blood test results I discuss below and adjust as needed. Through the years I have tried many vitamin combos. Currently I take the eye vitamin daily along with a multi or CoQ10 a couple times per week. I have not been ill for about 15 months after I made changes and did the initial Parasite Cleanse. I take a prophylactic dose of IVM biweekly and additional doses if I detect any respiratory issues. My BP and heart rate are fine and have been all of my life – generally in the 120/70 average with an average resting heart rate of 52. I take no prescription meds and only Flonase for allergies. I hit eject on antihistamines a year ago and could not be happier about it because it tells me the underlying causes for their need are being addressed well.

Our emphasis recently has been on gut health. Dr. Steven Gundry’s research and recommendations are highly credible in our minds. As a result of learning more and with the help of my Keto based nutrition I have been able to reduce lectins, which have been undermining my digestion for decades. Quite simply I did not need all of the fiber my physician as well as gastroenterologist recommended at my last colonoscopy. Scraping the walls of my intestines with more fiber was a bad idea for my gut type. If I had continued I would be in deep doodoo or as worm food.

I was miserable at times and the practice was causing weight gain, bloating and constipation even with drinking large amounts of water. If I continued it would have led to far worse health outcomes. So, I changed in accordance to what I learned along the way and recently tested with Dr. Gundry’s research and information. So far, so good. Life has become much easier to live. Annual Wellness Physicals

After the usual instruction to draw a clock showing 11:10 (yes, the same time every year) and being given three simple words to remember and repeat to the PA later in the exam (one of us always gets “village, kitchen, baby”), the experience went well. We were very pleased with the attitudes of the providers this year. Somebody got through their heads that the patients are the bosses, not them. The real results of COVIDiocy and their patients ire about it may have inspired them to do better. They asked our level of interest in vaccines and tests instead of telling us we needed to do something. It had already been noted in our files about no vaccines. When we passed this time, there was no questioning of our decisions. Occasionally they would offer some helpful thoughts for what to look for with potential health issues and what they could provide as tests if we experienced it. It turned into a relatively pleasant experience for a change.

And yes, in usual Trade smartassery I asked if they wanted the clock drawing to be AM or PM. It never fails to produce a puzzled, “wut?” expression. Just can’t help myself sometimes.

It all worked out as hoped. Could not ask for better results. Wifey’s BP and heart rate were in a normal range for probably the first time ever in 40 years of going to that doc office. The white coat syndrome did not kick in. Mine was in the usual range at 118/72/64. No physical abnormalities noted in the rest of our exams.

The blood test data was excellent for both of us. Wifey was slightly high on glucose, but had dropped 10% from the year before. I had nothing high or low except LDL, which was moderately above range for both of us. HDL and ratios were all good and in range. The LDL thing has been an industry hot potato with many patients since they lowered the acceptable range this year. Wifey and I are not going to play their game. We are in the previously acceptable 120 range. We will do the right things for us to lower it a bit more and not concern ourselves with their BS unless we detect problems.

Since we have only been making our life changes since early February, this blood test was a huge improvement for wifey. Her total total cholesterol dropped by a whopping 60 points from a year ago! Mine dropped 26 points even with the added meats and eggs. When I go off full Keto and sub in a bit of plant related proteins, fish and other veggies it will drop further. It proved that at least for some of us who follow the Keto nutrition plan as recommended; that it does not always lead to increased cholesterol as pundits and some medical professionals assert. Our own providers were skeptical of how it would turn out. Perhaps they will reconsider, perhaps not.

As stated I plan to selectively reintroduce some more good carbs (more fish, servings, veggies, Keto friendly fruits, maybe some oatmeal) into my diet, The sugar cravings are long gone and neither wifey or I desire for them to ever return. Related desserts and snacks will remain a thing of the past as a staple of our nutrition. Snacks for me are primarily nuts along with beef and chicken sticks. I will begin taking a Butyrate supplement to help my gut lining and maintain the metabolism my body has adapted to with more active fat busting ketones. It should help digestion for my gut type, which is averse to lectin as discussed. As stated I achieved my initial goal for weight loss. I plan to lose another 5 pounds or so to provide room for the winter months of less activity. Regardless, my goal will always be to weigh no more than my college playing weight. It should be relatively easy to do with our joint commitment to better health and the knowledge we have gained in the process.

With all of the above improvements, we are not without the normal challenges of aging that requires assistance from traditional medicine at times. For example, wifey will be addressing some non-cancerous dermatology related issues over the next few months. I will continue to work on flexibility and strengthening my lumbar region and knees, so that I can remain as active as possible. My Teeter inversion table remains a useful tool along with regular yoga stretching and other exercises. If I live long enough I expect one or both knees to need replaced as some point as they are well worn from sports and life as I have lived it.

Who knows what is in store for us to face, but we now feel comfortable we are doing our best to mitigate challenges to health. We give all praise to our Lord for seeing us through these life changes. We want to finish this life well before He takes us home, but leave the time for departure up to Him.

I urge all who are reading this to chart their own path when it comes to health and nutrition. Research, consider all of the information, pray about it, and then go to work. What I have provided is what has worked for us and our individual bodies, environment and living conditions. Some of it could translate to your benefit, but that is your call. The cost has been minimal. The reduction in overall food costs and trips to doctor offices for problems and illnesses, especially poor foods and life choices induced, has more than offset the costs of a few relatively low cost supplements and vitamins.

Moral & Religious

Government is not the answer to all of our problems. There is no government capable of restraining immoral, ungodly, and selfish people.

John Adams, the second President of the United States, said, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Did you catch that? “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” That is the reason the United States and many other countries in the world are in such terrible shape. Our world is becoming increasingly godless. While the vast majority of people in the world believe in the existence of God, an increasing majority live their lives as if God does not exist.

While the same principles apply to other nations, for the rest of this article, we will be discussing the United States specifically.

Government is not the answer. There is no perfect government because every government is filled with imperfect people. And while The United States has (or had) the best government in the history of the world, it is failing due to precisely what John Adams declared. Our government is wholly inadequate to govern immoral, ungodly, and selfish people.

None of the political parties seem to understand this. None of them embrace the Christian worldview on just how wretchedly sinful humanity is without Christ (Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 1:18-32; 3:10-23). Is there a more apt description of modern society than Genesis 6:5? “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”

The Democratic solution is to add new regulations. The Republican solution is to tweak the existing regulations. The Libertarian solution is to get rid of virtually all regulations. None of those methodologies are truly solutions to anything. The problem is sin. It does not matter how many laws we create. Evil and greedy people will find ways around the laws or find lawyers [and corrupt juries, corrupt judges, corrupt local and federal officials and corrupt law enforcement] to rescue them after they break the laws. Creating laws, tweaking laws, or removing laws will never solve the problem of sin. We are all infected with sin and inherently greedy (Matthew 6:19-24; Luke 12:15; Ephesians 5:5; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; Hebrews 13:5). Government cannot cure it. Only Jesus Christ can deliver us from it.

We don’t need a government to tell us that murder is wrong, that stealing is wrong, or that lying is wrong. These things are wrong because God has written His Law on our hearts and from His Word. Sure, governmental punishment can be a deterrent, but ultimately we strive to avoid sin because we love God and want to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to Him. That is the only biblically-valid deterrent to sin—not fines or prison sentences, but a desire to please God. That is what our society is lacking. And that explains why our country is floundering.

Not all of the early Americans or even all of the founding fathers were Christians. But at least they had a biblically-informed view of the world and a Christian sense of morality. The Constitution is arguably the best piece of governmental legislation in the history of the world. But it is inadequate in a country that is increasingly filled with people who desire only evil all the time.

True change is only possible through Jesus Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). The only reform that will truly impact our society is the reformation of people becoming new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17) and having our minds transformed (Romans 12:1-2).

Governing a godless, selfish, and greedy people is like trying to restrain the wind or grasp oil in your hand (Proverbs 27:16). Or, as John Adams so aptly put it, it is like trying to restrain a whale with a net. Due to 200+ years of US history, the nets have become significantly more complex since John Adams’ day, but due to the ever-increasing wickedness (Romans 6:19) of our society, the whale has become exponentially larger and more dangerous. Without repentance from sin and faith in Christ, it is looking increasingly like the only solution is a harpoon.

On July 4, 1976, John Wayne paraded through Cody with a 30-foot-long Winchester rifle. 50 years later, that rifle was still sitting on a rooftop next to the Irma Hotel until it was temporarily taken down but it will make its glorious return by July 4.

Fifty years ago, the highlight of the Cody Stampede Parade marking America’s bicentennial celebration was a 30-foot-long .30-30 Winchester rifle, dominating a float that also carried legendary Western actor John Wayne.

That rifle has been sitting atop a storefront in downtown Cody since. 

Everyone loves the giant Winchester, so they might have noticed when it recently suddenly disappeared from the roof where it had been prominently displayed since its trip down Sheridan Avenue decades earlier.

Like John Wayne himself, Cody’s giant Winchester rifle is coming back, better than ever, for another 50 years dominating Cody’s historic downtown.

“We’re putting it back to what it was in 1976, as best we can,” said Mike Darby, owner of the Irma Hotel and the giant Winchester. “I can’t confirm or deny what we’re going to do with it, but we’re hoping to have it done by July 3.”

It’s 1976, and the United States is starting down the barrel of its 200th anniversary. The Buffalo Bill Museum, now the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, decided to add its own ammunition to an already-loaded celebration.

July 4 was selected for the opening of the lavish Cody Firearms Museum. The addition of a massive Winchester collection, on loan from the Olin Corp., made it the world’s largest firearms museum at the time.

Adding to the excitement, the museum would be dedicated by the grand marshal of that year’s Cody Stampede Parade: “The Duke” himself, John Wayne.

The Husky Oil Co., founded in Cody in 1938, decided to make its own big contribution to the festivities.

What better to celebrate the bicentennial, Wayne, and the Cody Firearms Museum than with a giant replica of one of the American West’s most iconic firearms?

Denny Shore was the head of Husky Oil’s activities committee at the time. His wife, Sue, remembers it well.

“The theme for the parade that year was ‘Celebrating Winchester: The Gun That Won the West,’” she said. “Denny decided to call the people who make parade floats and asked if they could do a giant Winchester. They said yes, so they did.”

Shore doesn’t remember what company built the humongous rifle, but she remembers when it arrived on a flatbed trailer and was parked in front of her house.

“I loved it,” she said. “I’m a gun nut, and I have a .30-30 Winchester that I always hunted with. I feel like it was my own, and we were sharing it.”

Cody resident and photographer Dewey Vanderhoff was hired by the Olin Corp. to get photos of the parade, Wayne, and the rifle.

“Katy Brown’s ‘Buffalo Bill Dollies’ can-can girls danced in front of the big Winchester rifle at its public debut at the airport,” he said. “Everyone was there waiting for John Wayne’s ceremonial arrival on a Boeing 727 jet with his entourage and family.”

As the Cody Stampede Parade cruised down Sheridan Avenue, the Winchester was the center of attention. If that wasn’t enough, Wayne was riding on the same float.

Most parade floats quickly disappear when they reach the end of the route, but there was a brighter future for the giant Winchester.

‘Everything Under The Gun’

After its centerpiece moment in the parade, the giant Winchester was stored at the Husky Oil Refinery in Cody.

A few years later, Cody business owner Jack Skates opened Jack’s Sports & OK Hardware at 1137 12th St. right next to the Irma. The store came with the giant Winchester on the roof, where it had ended up after leaving Husky Oil.

“Their motto was ‘Everything Under The Gun,’” Shore said.

While the storefront changed hands multiple times in the next four decades, the rifle stayed right where it was. However, even the gun was under the gun.

Bob Carter owned one of the businesses, The Gunrunner, that occupied the space. He shared some details on the unique rooftop sculpture with the website Roadside America.

“It was only constructed for temporary display,” he said. “Some parts were made from cardboard. It held up for many years, but eventually required renovation and replacement with more permanent materials.”

Carter added that the giant Winchester was a replica of a 1968 Winchester 94 Buffalo Bill .30-30 rifle, making all the more appropriate for Cody’s bicentennial celebration.

Any knowledgeable gun owner knows firearms need regular care and upkeep. Even with more permanent parts, 50 years of exposure on a Cody rooftop made the larger-than-life Winchester a little worse for wear.

In May, the giant Winchester disappeared from the rooftop of 1137 12th St. It’s now getting some much-needed refurbishment.

Darby said the rifle was acquired by the Irma Hotel when it bought the building it was sitting on in the 1990s.

“It came at no extra charge,” he said.

Darby said the giant Winchester was in especially sorry shape going into this summer. If it was going to survive, it needed some help.

“The recent windstorms were hard on it, plus 50 years of weather damage,” he said. “It was about to fall off the building, so we got a crane to lift it up and put it on a trailer.”

The giant Winchester has since been dismantled and, essentially, rebuilt. Darby said everything that can be replaced is being replaced and reenforced.

“The barrel and the levels are made of wood, so we’re replacing what’s needed and putting better supports on the inside,” he said. “After dismantling it, we felt we could repair and improve it.”

Is dismantling a 30-foot Winchester rifle anything like the real thing?

“Not at all,” Darby said.

While they were working on the giant Winchester, Darby started looking at photos from the 1976 parade. He realized that there had been noticeable changes in the 50 years since its construction.

Since they had already dismantled it, Darby and his crew decided to restore it to its glory days (or “day”) in July 1976.

“The action on the gun was sort of a goldish bronze as it sat on the roof, but it was black in the photos from 1976,” he said, and there were several bands that went around the barrel to the stock that were bronze. “We’re going to paint those back to their original colors, or at least as close as we can get.”

If it’s already off the roof and being refurbished, why not take it for another slow spin through town?

The Cody Stampede Parade will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on July 3, so the giant Winchester will be ready for a glorious return on the 50th anniversary of its arrival.

“I can neither admit nor deny that rumor,” Darby said.

Reloaded For Another Century

Between June 30 and July 4, there will be a cavalcade of patriotic events and celebrations in Cody. The Cody Stampede Rodeo runs from July 1-4, and there will be three parades.

Darby encouraged patriotic parade fans to stick around for a day or two after the 250th celebration. The giant Winchester will cap off the festivities with another triumphant return.

“We’re putting right back on the building on July 5 or 6,” he said. “Hopefully, it’ll be there for the next 50 years.”

The Country of Georgia is part of the Trans-Caucasus region, an area that intersects with Russia, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan (https://www.britannica.com/place/Georgia.) The Country of Georgia is a former satellite state of the former USSR (the Soviet Union.) Per the Britannica entry cited above, the population of the Country of Georgia is considered to be healthy, with low incidence of tuberculosis and cancer. There are also numerous mineral springs health spas. These being so, why then is the United States Department of War so interested in providing the Country of Georgia with “uber-sophisticated”, military-grade software (at the least; and, possibly, infrastructure in addition) for “pathogen disease surveillance” to “track and mitigate the outbreak of infectious disease” — unless there are, perhaps, labs in the Country of Georgia in which “certain experiments” are being performed on pathogens that can cause disease? — Unless, perhaps, the Country of Georgia is also a kind of “backup location” (along with the African country, Cameroon) for bioweapons labs (and, possibly, research), in the event that the bioweapons labs in Ukraine are closed down, or blown up?

This is a compilation of the research I have done for Hubby. His legs are getting weaker and weaker and he now has trouble getting out of a chair or walking without a cane.

The increase of both habitual physical activity (including structured exercise that targets general fitness characteristics) and protein dense food ingestion are frontline strategies utilized to support muscle mass, performance, and health. In this paper, we discuss anabolic resistance as a common denominator underpinning muscle mass loss with aging, obesity, and other disease states. Namely, we discuss the fact that anabolic resistance exists as a dimmer switch, capable of varying from higher to lower levels of resistance, to the main anabolic stimuli of feeding and exercise depending on the population. Moreover, we review the evidence on whether increased physical activity and targeted exercise can be leveraged to restore the sensitivity of skeletal muscle tissue to dietary amino acids regardless of the population.


Protein Requirements and Recommendations for Older People: A Review

Abstract

Declines in skeletal muscle mass and strength are major contributors to increased mortality, morbidity and reduced quality of life in older people. Recommended Dietary Allowances/Intakes have failed to adequately consider the protein requirements of the elderly with respect to function. The aim of this paper was to review definitions of optimal protein status and the evidence base for optimal dietary protein. Current recommended protein intakes for older people do not account for the compensatory loss of muscle mass that occurs on lower protein intakes. Older people have lower rates of protein synthesis and whole-body proteolysis in response to an anabolic stimulus (food or resistance exercise). Recommendations for the level of adequate dietary intake of protein for older people should be informed by evidence derived from functional outcomes. Randomized controlled trials report a clear benefit of increased dietary protein on lean mass gain and leg strength, particularly when combined with resistance exercise. There is good consistent evidence (level III-2 to IV) that consumption of 1.0 to 1.3 g/kg/day dietary protein combined with twice-weekly progressive resistance exercise reduces age-related muscle mass loss. Older people appear to require 1.0 to 1.3 g/kg/day dietary protein to optimize physical function, particularly whilst undertaking resistance exercise recommendations.


Evidence-Based Recommendations for Optimal Dietary Protein Intake in Older People: A Position Paper From the PROT-AGE Study Group

Abstract

New evidence shows that older adults need more dietary protein than do younger adults to support good health, promote recovery from illness, and maintain functionality. Older people need to make up for age-related changes in protein metabolism, such as high splanchnic extraction and declining anabolic responses to ingested protein. They also need more protein to offset inflammatory and catabolic conditions associated with chronic and acute diseases that occur commonly with aging. With the goal of developing updated, evidence-based recommendations for optimal protein intake by older people, the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS), in cooperation with other scientific organizations, appointed an international study group to review dietary protein needs with aging (PROT-AGE Study Group). To help older people (>65 years) maintain and regain lean body mass and function, the PROT-AGE study group recommends average daily intake at least in the range of 1.0 to 1.2 g protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Both endurance- and resistance-type exercises are recommended at individualized levels that are safe and tolerated, and higher protein intake (ie, ≥1.2 g/kg body weight/d) is advised for those who are exercising and otherwise active. Most older adults who have acute or chronic diseases need even more dietary protein (ie, 1.2–1.5 g/kg body weight/d). Older people with severe kidney disease (ie, estimated GFR <30 mL/min/1.73m2), but who are not on dialysis, are an exception to this rule; these individuals may need to limit protein intake. Protein quality, timing of ingestion, and intake of other nutritional supplements may be relevant, but evidence is not yet sufficient to support specific recommendations. Older people are vulnerable to losses in physical function capacity, and such losses predict loss of independence, falls, and even mortality. Thus, future studies aimed at pinpointing optimal protein intake in specific populations of older people need to include measures of physical function.

So yes there is evidence of the problem.

1. Leucine

Leucine acts as a sort of “green light” to muscle growth. It triggers muscle protein synthesis “by signaling to pathways that other amino acids are available to start the muscle repair process post-exercise,” explains Samuel, adding that you need at least 2–3 grams of leucine to stimulate the process. 

Research also illustrates leucine’s role in promoting muscle growth and metabolic health. A small 2020 study published in the journal Nutrients, for example,found that leucine helped moderately reduce muscle damage in young men after a short bout of resistance exercise. This amino acid also helps heal wounds and balance blood sugar levels, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

2. Isoleucine

Isoleucine also contributes to muscle protein synthesis, playing a vital but not quite as influential role as leucine. It appears to increase muscle mass by promoting myogenesis, the process by which we actually form muscle tissue, according to a 2021 study in mice published in Food & Function.

BCAAs, especially isoleucine, also help increase the uptake of glucose into cells, according to Samuel. Because glucose is your body’s main fuel source, isoleucine may indirectly help boost your energy (although more research is needed). 3. Valine

Valine acts as a complement to the other two BCAAs: It’s used to make glucose in the body and helps improve muscle protein synthesis when paired with leucine and adequate levels of other amino acids, Samuel says.

Leucine: The Amino Acid That Matters Most for Muscle

“Originally it was thought that all three BCAAs play a direct role in muscle building,” says Paul Falcone, principal scientist at BODi. “But research indicates that much of the effect of branched-chain amino acids is really driven by leucine.”

That’s because leucine is key in the process of muscle protein synthesis, which enables muscle hypertrophy (growth).

Leucine has the ability to directly signal mTOR, one of the major nutrient sensor molecules and master regulators in the body that’s known for anabolic (growth) signaling. This helps make muscles absorb protein, which is key for their preservation and growth.

In this way, leucine is both a building block at a construction site and the contractor directing the process, Falcone says. Because it plays this dual role, it’s the most important amino acid for muscle building.

Most research supports that between 20-40mg/kg body weight per day is adequate for supporting ideal levels of leucine in the body. Protein Requirements and Recommendations for Older People: A Review

Abstract

Declines in skeletal muscle mass and strength are major contributors to increased mortality, morbidity and reduced quality of life in older people. Recommended Dietary Allowances/Intakes have failed to adequately consider the protein requirements of the elderly with respect to function. The aim of this paper was to review definitions of optimal protein status and the evidence base for optimal dietary protein. Current recommended protein intakes for older people do not account for the compensatory loss of muscle mass that occurs on lower protein intakes. Older people have lower rates of protein synthesis and whole-body proteolysis in response to an anabolic stimulus (food or resistance exercise). Recommendations for the level of adequate dietary intake of protein for older people should be informed by evidence derived from functional outcomes. Randomized controlled trials report a clear benefit of increased dietary protein on lean mass gain and leg strength, particularly when combined with resistance exercise. There is good consistent evidence (level III-2 to IV) that consumption of 1.0 to 1.3 g/kg/day dietary protein combined with twice-weekly progressive resistance exercise reduces age-related muscle mass loss. Anabolic Resistance in the Pathogenesis of Sarcopenia in the Elderly: Role of Nutrition and Exercise in Young and Old People

The term “sarcopenia” (from the Greek words “sarx”, i.e., flesh, and “penia”, i.e., loss) was first proposed by Rosenberg in 1989 to describe the age-related loss of muscle mass [1]. Later, this term referred to the decrease in muscle mass and/or strength with ageing.

Abstract

The development of sarcopenia in the elderly is associated with many potential factors and/or processes that impair the renovation and maintenance of skeletal muscle mass and strength as ageing progresses. Among them, a defect by skeletal muscle to respond to anabolic stimuli is to be considered. Common anabolic stimuli/signals in skeletal muscle are hormones (insulin, growth hormones, IGF-1, androgens, and β-agonists such epinephrine), substrates (amino acids such as protein precursors on top, but also glucose and fat, as source of energy), metabolites (such as β-agonists and HMB), various biochemical/intracellular mediators), physical exercise, neurogenic and immune-modulating factors, etc. Each of them may exhibit a reduced effect upon skeletal muscle in ageing. In this article, we overview the role of anabolic signals on muscle metabolism, as well as currently available evidence of resistance, at the skeletal muscle level, to anabolic factors, from both in vitro and in vivo studies. Some indications on how to augment the effects of anabolic signals on skeletal muscle are provided.

2.1. The Molecular Mechanisms behind Muscles Growth in Young Subjects: Exercise, Nutrients, and Hormones

Muscle growth, or muscle hypertrophy, is a complex process regulated by several molecular pathways. The primary pathways that promote muscle growth in response to exercise, nutrients, and growth signals include the IGF-1/PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase)/Akt/mTOR pathway and hormones like testosterone and GH (Figure 1).

The IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway is a vital signaling cascade in muscle growth that involves various interconnected mechanisms. Its activation increases protein synthesis, reduces protein degradation, and improves cell growth. The molecular mechanisms and interactions within this pathway are still being studied in human muscle physiology. When activated, mTOR promotes muscle hypertrophy by stimulating protein synthesis and cell growth [13]. The mTOR kinase is the main regulator of muscle protein synthesis and responds to the availability of nutrients, particularly amino acids and growth factors. Indeed, resistance exercise and nutrient intake, especially leucine-rich amino acids, activate the mTOR pathway essential for exercise-induced muscle protein synthesis and are, thus, necessary for increasing muscle protein synthesis following resistance exercise in young men…

2.2.1. Effects of Proteins and Amino Acids

…Leucine is particularly important as a key metabolic regulator of MPS through its activation of the mTOR pathway, and it acutely enhances skeletal MPS both in vitro [45,47,48,49,50] (also above) and in vivo [51]. Leucine, isoleucine, and valine, i.e., the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), account for about one-third of all amino acid residues in muscle protein, and have been extensively studied regarding their direct regulatory role (due to leucine) on protein synthesis (see also above). Nevertheless, the demonstration of a clear-cut effect of BCAA alone, on skeletal muscle hypertrophy (i.e., a long-term effect) in humans is not sound. In a meta-analysis, leucine supplementation was reported to increase the muscle protein fractional synthesis rate, however, without changing either body lean mass or leg lean mass [61]. The effect of another amino acid, glutamine (non-essential), on skeletal muscle in humans, is yet uncertain and/or unwarranted…

The structure/form of nutrient intake (free AA vs. intact protein) with respect to the timing of administration (either before, or 1 to 3 h after, exercise) on the stimulation of skeletal muscle protein accretion is relevant too. While net amino acid uptake by skeletal muscle (measured by means of femoral arteriovenous sampling) was greater when free essential amino acids plus carbohydrates were ingested before, rather than after, resistance exercise [84], the ingestion of intact whey protein was similar irrespective of the administration time [85].

2.2.3. Effect of Other Substrates

Protein synthesis is an energy-requiring process [86]; therefore, energy-providing substrates such as glucose and fat may affect protein turnover too. The activities of the cellular pathways controlling protein turnover are bio-energetically expensive and therefore depend on intracellular energy availability (i.e., macronutrient intake) [87].

Glucose

Glucose increased muscle protein synthesis in vitro [88]. Testing glucose-induced or derived substrates separately, tissue ATP decreased during incubation with lactate, and lactate + pyruvate supported protein synthesis better than pyruvate or glucose. The data on the effects in humans of either glucose or fat on protein metabolism, specifically on skeletal muscle, are scarce, complex, and not univocal [42]. Enteral glucose administration did not affect either duodenal mucosal protein FSR or the activities of mucosal proteases [89]. An oral glucose load, and the simultaneous glucose-induced stimulation of insulin secretion, did not alter the rate of whole-body protein synthesis or breakdown [90]. Similarly, glucose ingestion added to a protein dose that maximally stimulated MPS, despite greater insulin increments, did not show either additive or synergistic effects on either the stimulation of MPS or the inhibition of muscle protein breakdown [91]. The co-ingestion of carbohydrates with protein did not further augment the post-exercise stimulation of muscle protein synthesis

Lipids and Ketones

The effects of either lipid or ketone infusion/administration in humans are complex. Lipid infusion in humans did not affect proteolysis [96]. In contrast, medium-chain fatty acid infusion apparently increased leucine oxidation and, therefore, net protein catabolism [97]. Thus, the effects on whole-body protein degradation may depend on the fatty acid length [98]. The increase in FFA decreased basal muscle protein synthesis, but not the anabolic effect of leucine [99]. When associated with dietary protein ingestion, neither acute nor short-term dietary fat overload impaired skeletal MPS in overweight/obese men in the post-prandial phase, thus excluding a role by dietary accumulation of intramuscular lipids on the anabolic response to meal ingestion [100]. The infusion of 3OHButyrate decreased both whole body and forearm protein turnover (measured by phenylalanine/tyrosine tracers), as well as phenylalanine catabolism, in post-absorptive conditions, whereas it did not modify the insulin-induced effects following an euglycemic clamp [96]. In another study, 3OHButyrate infusion did not change whole-body leucine turnover, decreased leucine oxidation, and increased the non-oxidative portion of leucine disposal, while muscle PS increased, demonstrating an anabolic effect of 3OHButyrate at this level [101].

3.2. Anabolic Resistance in Ageing: Human Studies

Elderly subjects exhibit many abnormalities in protein metabolism in respect to younger subjects, here concisely summarized:

  1. An increased splanchnic “trapping” of the ingested substrates, henceforth reducing amino acid delivery to peripheral tissues, such as skeletal muscle. Google AI — Aging and Clinical States: In older adults or those with certain metabolic conditions, splanchnic uptake can become hyperactive (a process called splanchnic sequestration). This means too many amino acids get trapped in the gut/liver, leaving less available for the muscles. This contributes to age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
  2. A decreased amino acid utilization by muscle, and/or the requirement for a greater AA load/delivery to stimulate appropriately PS in muscle, compatible with an anabolic-resistant state. In other words, the skeletal muscle in ageing might be less sensitive to lower (normal) levels of amino acids than that in young adults, and may thus require more protein to acutely stimulate muscle protein synthesis above rest, to achieve the required accretion of muscle proteins.
  3. A decrease in energy production otherwise required to sustain the energy-expensive PS.
  4. Altered protein digestion.
  5. A decrease in transluminal AA transport.
  6. An intestinal microbiota different from that of younger people.

Any of the above-listed potential factors could explain why elderly people would require, and/or are recommended to assume, at least ≈ 50% more protein than either young or mature subjects [66]. In the following sections, we report the literature data on protein turnover in ageing, both in basal and “post-absorptive” conditions, and following nutrition, exercise, and response to hormones.

However, at variance with these earlier reports, more recent studies consistently failed to confirm the earlier findings of decreased basal muscle protein synthesis in elderly subjects, showing little or no differences between young and old adults…

It should, however, be recognized that basal muscle protein turnover could particularly be altered in frail, elderly subjects, being potentially associated also with a chronic, subtle, systemic inflammatory state and/or other co-morbidities [198,199]. Indeed, inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, particularly TNFα, may impair skeletal muscle protein FSR, by interfering with the phosphorylation of the mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) pathway [150], critically involved in the regulation of mRNA translation, muscle protein synthesis, and growth [200]. Therefore, it is currently accepted that basal skeletal muscle protein turnover is near-normal in healthy elderly subjects. In contrast, a different, complex picture can emerge when studying the response in ageing of skeletal muscle protein turnover to anabolic stimuli, such as substrates (i.e., mixed meals, protein, amino acid mixtures, other metabolites), exercise, anabolic hormones, or their combinations.

Elderly subjects exhibit some peculiarities in the handling of oral feeding. Using the essential amino acid leucine as a tracer, a greater first-pass splanchnic uptake of ingested amino acid(s) was reported in the elderly rather than in young people, suggesting that a lower proportion of ingested amino acid reached the peripheral circulation [195]. Such a greater splanchnic extraction could limit the amino-acid-mediated stimulation of muscle protein synthesis in peripheral tissues such as skeletal muscle. Consequently, sustaining splanchnic vs. muscle protein synthesis could indicate a “metabolic priority” during recovery from metabolic stress in healthy elderly persons. Such a mechanism might become more relevant in older individuals suffering from chronic diseases and/or subjected to poly-medications [201]. However, in contrast with the above report, it was also reported that oral amino acids stimulated muscle protein anabolism in the elderly, despite the higher first-pass splanchnic extraction [202].

Generally speaking, dietary protein supplementation can augment the gains in skeletal muscle mass and strength mediated by resistance exercise… Verdijk et al. compared the increment(s) in skeletal muscle mass and strength following 3 months of resistance exercise training, with or without protein ingestion, either prior to or immediately after each exercise session in elderly males who habitually consumed about 1.0 g protein/kg per day [210]. They concluded that timed protein supplementation prior to and after each exercise bout did not further increase skeletal muscle hypertrophy…

No impairment of muscle protein synthesis to protein intake was detected in elderly subjects after ingestion of large amounts of carbohydrates and proteins [211], or of either moderate (≈115 g) [212] or large (≈300 g) amounts of beef [213]. By comparing sarcopenic (≈80 y) and healthy (≈70 y) older men, the ingestion of ≈20 g of a leucine-enriched whey protein load, increased muscle protein synthesis rates to the same extent in both groups [214].

In older adults, following the ingestion of mixed meals containing combinations of animal (beef) and vegetal proteins, the whole-body anabolic response linearly increased with increasing protein intake, primarily due to the suppression of protein breakdown. Notably, muscle protein synthesis (i.e., one factor contributing to the net protein accretion, or balance, together with the suppression of protein degradation) was further stimulated by a protein dose (70 g) above that previously considered as “optimal” in the elderly (≈35 g/kg BW) [215], yet attaining the same maximal response as that of young subjects. However, at the 40 g dose, the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis in the elderly was lower than that observed in the young volunteers, therefore compatible with anabolic resistance in the former group at a “lower” (i.e., 40 g) mixed protein dose (see also below). The above-reported protein dose(s) stimulating MPS in older subjects were, however, greater than the 20 g high-quality, whey protein dose that produced the maximal effect on MPS in young people, either exercising or not [72]. The muscle protein synthetic response to the combined ingestion of protein and carbohydrate (i.e., an additional energy source) was not impaired in healthy older men [216]. Similarly, the co-ingestion of carbohydrates with protein and free leucine stimulated muscle protein synthesis to the same extent in young and elderly lean men [217]…

A ten-day administration of a supplement containing fast-digestive proteins (soluble milk proteins compared to casein alone) could overcome muscle anabolic resistance in the elderly [205]. Furthermore, oral EAA ingestion exhibited a retarded albeit still sustained response of MPS in the elderly as compared to young subjects [58].

In older men, skeletal muscle was also less responsive to the anabolic effects of leucine in the postprandial phase than in the young controls [219]. Also, a higher proportion of leucine within an essential amino acid mixture was required for the optimal stimulation of muscle protein synthesis in the elderly, rather than in young subjects…

3.2.6. Deleterious Effects of Bed Rest in the Elderly

A condition opposite to exercise is bed rest, an undesired situation very common in hospitalized older subjects, as well as in those old persons in whom, for a variety of factors, physical activity is restrained and/or abolished, either voluntarily or not [156,225,226,227]. In older adults, bed rest significantly restrained the EAA-induced increase in MPS, through a reduction in mTORC1 signaling and amino acid transport [228]. EAA supplementation above RDA may help to preserve muscle function in the elderly during inactivity

3.2.7. Effect of the Inflammatory State

Acute and chronic inflammation retain undesired effects on skeletal muscle mass and protein metabolism. Thus, age-associated inflammation (either subtle or overt) may negatively affect the anabolic sensitivity of skeletal muscle in the elderly. Toth et al. reported a strong relationship exists between MPS and circulating concentrations of several markers of immune activation [199]. At the mechanistic level, cytokines, in particularly, TNF-α, may impair MPS by blunting the phosphorylation of proteins in the mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) intracellular signaling pathway…

3.3.1. The Effect of Complex Nutritional Supplements

Although natural foods rich in high-quality protein (dairy products, meat, and egg) can adequately stimulate protein anabolism as efficiently as that of protein-rich supplements and/or of specifically designed amino acid mixtures, the advantage of using specific nutritional supplements remains questionable…

3.3.2. Specific Effects of Leucine Addition

The addition of leucine to other nutritional products may be a valid supplement to be used in the elderly, although with somehow limited effects [240]. Older subjects consuming a leucine supplement showed a greater increase in MPS rates from baseline than the controls, but not in lean body mass or muscle function [61]. In a recent study in older men (74 y), co-ingestion of 2.5 g leucine with 20 g casein resulted in a 22% higher muscle protein synthetic rate compared with ingestion of casein alone [241].

The leucine effect seems to be dose-dependent. Leucine added as a supplement (3–5 g) to either whey protein or EAA solutions in either younger or older men, showed comparable increments in skeletal muscle myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS), at variance with no sustained stimulation observed in control subjects receiving only 1.8 g leucine [242,243]. However, the leucine effect in skeletal muscle of aged people might be impaired, as mTORC1 activation is defective, and sensitivity and responsiveness of muscle protein synthesis to amino acids decreased [50]. Conversely, the basal activation of mTOR seems to be higher. A combined effect of age-related impairment of muscle signaling and insufficient availability/delivery of nutrients and growth factors to the muscle might contribute to sarcopenia. Thus, whether ageing per se affects mTORC1 signaling is yet uncertain, because of the common association between poor protein assumption, reduced/absent physical activity, and concurrent diseases. In studies in which habitual protein intake exceeded 1.0–1.1 g/kg/day, and included a moderate/high proportion of dairy protein, prolonged leucine supplementation (2.5 g daily for six months) did not increase muscle mass or strength in healthy type 2 diabetic older adult

3.3.3. Exercise Strategies

The primary target(s) of sarcopenia prevention/amelioration is the reduction in the risk of falls and fractures and the maintenance of independence in everyday tasks. The interventions applied to attain these targets look very similar to those aimed at the amelioration of general health status with ageing, such as improvements in muscle mass and strength, bone density, cardiovascular fitness, maximal oxygen consumption, endurance, and energy metabolism, in addition to the reduction in insulin resistance and the associated risk of diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, hypertension, and obesity [245]. In other words, the benefits of regular exercise translate into an improvement in the quality of life of elderly populations. Practicing regular exercise is a prerequisite to attain and maintain these benefits over time. In order to attain these key objectives, much attention has to be devoted to the implementation of specific exercise programs, aiming at increasing the awareness of their safety, required constancy, and compliance.

Following regular training, older subjects can increase muscle strength as much as that of younger control subjects, even by threefold, over a few months. This result is initially accomplished by neural adaptation(s) and greater muscle fiber recruitment, while more prolonged resistance training leads to an increase in muscle mass/size too, (partially) restoring the loss of the cross-sectional area of type II muscle fibers occurring with ageing [246]. Resistance training contributes to improvement in the functional capacity of the levels of physical activity and allows participation in daily living activities to be maintained, thus being motivationally efficient too. Specific protocols for the implementation of exercise to combat sarcopenia in ageing, in the old [247], as well as the oldest-old (80–85 y) [248] and the physically frail [249], have been proposed.

Both resistance/strength/weight exercise and endurance/aerobic training of skeletal muscles may be useful in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Strenght training can positively affect the neuromuscular system, and increase hormone concentrations and the MPS rate [250]; however, from a recent meta-analysis, the benefit of combining dietary supplements and exercise is not so straightforward among different populations [251].

Exercise training has been consistently shown to be highly effective in slowing down and possibly preventing the insurgence of sarcopenia in older people, counteracting the loss of muscle mass, and strength, and an increase in intramuscular fat infiltrations. While stressing the importance of a personalized approach, general physical activity guidelines suggest that a combination of aerobic exercise, progressive resistance training, and balance training might be the ideal intervention for a sarcopenic population. Of note in a mixed training involving aerobic, strength, and balance exercises was effective in improving or preserving motoneuronal health and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) stability, together with muscle mass, strength, and functionality in an old, sarcopenic population [252]. These sarcopenic subjects were trained three times per week for 2 years with a mix of aerobic, strength, and balance exercises matched with nutritional advice [252]. The same group of researchers followed older dancers for 6 months, reporting a major stability in neuromuscular junctions and a superior functional performance despite no differences in muscle size…

New exercise technologies, and supplementation by antioxidants, vitamin D, eicosapentaenoic acid, or ursolic acid, as well as activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), may be considered too…

A number of reports have also investigated the optimal daily distribution of food protein, as well as the timing of the administration with respect to exercise performance (see also above).

In regard to food protein distribution over the three main daily meals, it was reported that non-frail elderly subjects consume dietary proteins more evenly than pre-frail and frail subjects, thus suggesting that the daily protein load should be consumed as ≈30 g protein (in a representative 75 kg subject) at each of the three daily mealtimes [264]. Conversely, in a subsequent randomized-controlled trial, the pattern of meal-protein intake (i.e., even vs. not even) over the day did not affect lean body mass, muscle strength, or other functional outcomes, as well as whole-body protein kinetics and MPS over 8 weeks in older adults [265].

With respect to the timing of food protein food administration with exercise (i.e., before, at the beginning, i.e., at t = 0′, or after exercise performance), in the only published study in the elderly, the early intake of a protein supplement immediately before (at t = 0′) each bout of resistance-type exercise in a 12-week intervention study in the elderly sustained skeletal muscle hypertrophy, as opposed to having no effect with the supplement intake taken 2 h after exercise [266]. Notably, protein ingestion in the evening/night before sleep increased Muscle Protein Synthesis throughout the night in healthy older men [267].

A list and the quantities of common foods providing ≈ 30 g of protein are reported in Table 4. (data compiled from ref. [268]) The quantities of animal foods are lower than those of vegetal foods (except for soybeans and quinoa), because of their balanced content of essential amino acids. The reported quantities are only indicative, because most of these foods have not been specifically tested in controlled studies of stimulation of skeletal MPS with exercise in the elderly.

2026.06.23 Daily Thread: The World According To Trade(Bait)

With the lead up to Independence Day and the 250 year celebrations well underway, I am using this daily to review one of the most important documents written in history in this author’s opinion.

One more time, let’s a look back at the author of the Declaration of Independence. Let’s venture into the mind of Thomas Jefferson as he wrote it and pay close attention to the immortal words that give definition to mankind in our great nation. The same words that every founding father who signed the document left untouched that flowed from TJ’s mind to the pen and onto the paper.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. In my opinion, those are two of the most important and world shaking paragraphs ever written outside of the words of the Bible.

We need to better understand Thomas Jefferson as a person at age 33. We have questions. Why did he write these words the way he did? Why did all fifty five of the other founding fathers sign the document as written without change in that section? Knowing that may offer clues about its content. Knowing that might reveal who our nation is envisioned to be.

Perspective

To begin we need to consider what the childhood of young Thomas was like. What events and people helped influence him to write those words?

I contend that his parents, Peter and Jane, laid the groundwork for his beliefs with how they approached life and raised him. The hands that rocked the cradle, who introduced him to open dealings and helping all people regardless of station in life and culture, were the guiding force. The parents who introduced and routinely broke bread in their home with their friend, Ostenaco, the prominent Cherokee Chief, as well as associated with the early patriots in the area who became vitally important to the independence movement. These neighboring colonists made great impressions on him. These same parents worked hard, became guardians of the children of a deceased friend for a number of years, and operated both plantations during the period. They kept order in their home, on the properties, among the slaves and in their business dealings. These were the people who made sure the children of both families were educated by tutors, taught music and art, and encouraged to be well read even though neither had personally been given that opportunity in their youths. They were often seen enjoying community dances and events as a family.

While in Williamsburg, Timberlake and Ostenaco attended a dinner party at William & Mary College at which Ostenaco professed his desire to meet the king of England. A young Thomas Jefferson, then a student at the college, later wrote of Ostenaco:

“I knew much of the great Outassete (Ostenaco), the warrior and orator of the Cherokee. He was always the guest of my father on his journeys to and from Williamsburg. I was in his camp when he made his great farewell oration to his people the evening before he departed for England. The moon was in full splendour, and to her he seemed to address himself in his prayers for his own safety on the voyage and that of his people during his absence. His sounding voice, distinct articulation, animated action, and the solemn silence of his people at their several fires, filled me with awe and veneration, although I did not understand a single word he uttered.”

You can see from their actions and words that Thomas and his parents exhibited selfless, giving attitudes and actions not unlike those that many of our founding fathers and mothers gave our young nation years later.

This upbringing led to his acceptance of all people regardless of who they were, their culture or their beliefs. It developed a curiosity to learn more, grow, build relationships and to have a strong work ethic. It was an easy transition for Thomas to become a supporter of the Enlightenment movement as he entered William & Mary and the law firm mentorship that awaited him at an impressionable age after his father died.

This Age of Enlightenment period produced an intellectual movement in Europe during the late 17th to the late 18th centuries that emphasized reason, science, and individual liberty over tradition and religious authority. This led to new ideas in philosophy, politics, and science; which in turn led to major social and political changes.

The colonies became fertile ground for the movement within education and leadership circles. It was also a study in contrasts that Thomas noted and adapted into his own observations and writings. The first Great Awakening of Christianity in the colonies had been initiated by Jonathon Edwards and continued by George Whitefield, John Wesley and others. The two life changing movements were basically occurring during the same period and awakening the minds and souls of colonists to a desire for better relations with all people. They sparked the fire that later raged within the hearts of American patriots.

Once again, we see the patriot movement leading to the formation of a new nation with a unique system of governing while running parallel with the increasing commitment of the patriots to Christianity and its principles.

Hand meet glove.

The Declaration of Independence reflects both Enlightenment and Christian principles within the content of the writing of Thomas Jefferson. The authority of God over nations and peoples is stated as well as the authority and responsibility of mankind to rule itself and throw off oppressive governments.

As it applies to the colonies, in summary, Thomas was convinced that all mankind was quite capable of leading and governing themselves reasonably without dependence on Kings, royalty, and oppressive totalitarian forms of government. He had become a lawyer under the training and mentorship of George Wythe, learned science and governing philosophies of royal Governor Francis Fauquier, as well as increasing knowledge about medicine and empiricism from William Small. He developed a close friendship and association for life with future Constitution framer and POTUS, James Madison. Jefferson did not even feel the need to return from his post in France to work on and sign the Constitution because of the connection between the two men. All of these relationships provided major influence and support that informed his thought processes. He had become a scholar of many areas of life during those times.

He was also well in tune with the common man and truly listened and observed. The obvious evidence of this was the huge margin of victory in his second term election to POTUS, a margin that has never been repeated in election history for the position. His popularity as well as that of Madison led to the formation of the Jeffersonian Republican Party, which was formally known as the Democratic-Republican Party, and control of Congress as well as the POTUS for over two decades. The common people loved Thomas Jefferson and knew he had their backs.

It is with this understanding, along with his quiet observations from the words of other founding fathers during those days in Independence Hall that he authored those opening words above that set the basis for American life forever. The references to God are numerous as well as mankind’s responsibilities to each other. This sets the tone for the entire document.

There exists a sadness in the recognition that “all men are created equal” did not mean slaves of any skin color or culture at that point in our nation’s history. That came later and nearly all of the founding fathers expressed their understanding that the end of the practice was coming. However, Thomas recognized the plight of the enslaved and treated his own with compassion that including educating and keeping them together as families, while releasing them later in his life as society accepted it. In fact, despite his own wealth and standing in our national affairs, the aristocratic elites were never comfortable with Thomas Jefferson and his views of the world as I discussed in American Stories.

What It Means

To determine what it means to us 250 years later, we need to apply the words to our nation and lives today. Do any of the words we read sound temporary or only applicable to the times of that Revolutionary War period? Are there universal truths layered within that are timeless and interconnected with today?

Until the final two sentences of the subject text presented above there is no particular mention of the actual oppressors of Great Britain and the King. The words describe conditions that dictate actions by the people to produce better circumstances and consequences. There is no mention of class, station, race, culture, etc. of the people to which it applied. It might as well have been written for a different place, nation and time as it was then for the colonies.

That means that he and the signers viewed the text could be universally applied to this nation no matter the conditions or time period. Which coincidently, is exactly what has happened over the period and is happening within the America First MAGA movement today. The oppression from the cabal’s New World Order, Rules Based Order and other coercive attacks on humanity is being cast off as the Crown was cast off 243 years ago with the end of the war using this same understanding.

As the Declaration text indicates, it is our duty as American citizens to cast off all oppression and renew our government back into the principles of our founding documents in the spirit of our unanimously united signers of the Declaration of Independence.

As a personal observation, Thomas Jefferson and I have major differences in thought unrelated to the big picture of nation building and the Declaration. I am certain I would have found myself on the side of Alexander Hamilton relating to the economy and our nation’s business growth. From my many years in business and banking I am certain that innovation and manufacturing are primary drivers of wealth creation and it matters little who does the investing into our country as long as they do it The American Way and We the People receive great benefit.

That understanding is probably why I fully support the approach #45-47 has been charting and with most other initiatives he has undertaken. He is the most consequential POTUS since Abraham Lincoln in my opinion. The parallels regarding education, accomplishments and orientation toward all peoples from his youth throughout life is remarkable. The support of We the People for him is similar to Jefferson. He has our backs, we have his.

I look forward to the addition of his image on Mount Rushmore; joining the great Thomas Jefferson.

Hidden Person

[This post is not directed toward women, but concerns the “hidden person” or “inner self” in all of us.]

People tend to admire outward beauty, but God considers inner character of much greater worth. In a teaching to Christian wives, the apostle Peter encourages them to recognize what is not only attractive to husbands but what is most valuable in God’s eyes: “Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious” (1 Peter 3:3–4, ESV).

Godliness, while visible outwardly, originates from the unseen inner self—the heart (Proverbs 4:23). The “hidden person of the heart” represents the whole human being as shaped from within—not a private interior life disconnected from the world, but rather the internal character that manifests itself in everyday behavior (Romans 2:29; 7:22; 2 Corinthians 4:16; Ephesians 3:16). What matters to God is the godly character that shapes and beautifies our inner self rather than our physical appearance. God “does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, NLT).

Why does God value what is within us—our true inner self—over external adornment? Because the beauty of the hidden person of the heart is ‘imperishable’ (ESV, CSB), or ‘incorruptible’ (NKJV) —a translation of the Greek word aphthartō, which refers to something that does not fade or decay over time. External enhancements like fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, and fine clothing are only temporary. These earthly things will eventually fade and decay with time. However, inner virtues will endure forever (1 Peter 1:4, 23; 2 Corinthians 4:16–18).

The apostle Paul advocated training for godliness over building up our external bodies through physical exercise. He told Timothy, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8, NLT). Like Peter, Paul prioritized spiritual discipline and training in godliness to develop our inner selves more than focusing on external workouts to develop our physical bodies. Inner beauty and strength reside in the hidden person of the heart. The value in these traits extends far beyond this life into the life to come.

Paul was not saying that physical training is worthless. He said it was good for us and has value for this life. Likewise, Peter was not teaching that wives should never groom themselves or care for their outward appearance. Instead, these apostles were urging believers to maintain the right spiritual perspective. It does not matter how much we invest in beauty routines, physical exercise, or careful dietary regimens. One day, we will all face death (Hebrews 9:27; Ecclesiastes 3:1–2). Our human bodies, our outer shells, will one day die. But if we are born again in Christ, our inner selves will live on, raised to life as spiritual, eternal beings (2 Corinthians 4:16; 1 Corinthians 15:42–44). For this reason, Jesus Christ said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36). What we nurture and value in this life, we will carry into eternity.

If a woman relies solely on outward grooming to appear beautiful, she will overlook the greater value of enriching her soul. If a believer concentrates only on physical training, he will miss the eternal benefits of spiritual discipline. Cultivating godliness and the inner “beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit” will affect every aspect of our lives, both present and future. The more we grow in faith, moral excellence, and inner godliness, the more productive and useful we will be in God’s kingdom (2 Peter 1:3–8). Jesus said that our godliness will flow from the treasury of a good heart (Luke 6:45).

The beautiful character stored in the hidden person of the heart is a precious treasure in God’s sight. It is evidence that we value God and His kingdom above all (Matthew 6:19–21). This beauty is available to all believers, both women and men alike. But this beauty is costly; it will require us to give up everything. Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it” (Mark 8:34–35, NLT; see also Luke 14:25–33).

Paul considered everything in this life worthless, apart from “the infinite value of knowing Christ” (Philippians 3:7–8). May we live each day in pursuit of what is most precious to God. May we minor in sprucing up our outward appearance and major in beautifying our inner life (Philippians 4:8), nurturing the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), and clothing ourselves in Christlike holiness (Colossians 3:12–14; Ephesians 4:22–24).
