For God”s Glory
In the first section of Colossians 3 (1–17) Paul writes to encourage his readers in their general mindset and behavior. Concluding that section, Paul writes that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory (Colossians 3:17). This is the overarching principle that should govern the life of the believer.
Paul provides specific descriptions of what doing all for God’s glory should look like in how we think (Colossians 3:1–4), how we handle the desires of the flesh (Colossians 3:5), and how we should care for and treat one another (Colossians 3:12–15). He then identifies the basis for empowering that kind of thought and conduct (Colossians 3:16). Paul concludes the section with the exhortation that we make sure that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory (Colossians 3:17). Following those general instructions, Paul offers specific ways believers can faithfully steward the various relationships God provides (Colossians 3:18—4:6).
Because of the work God has done to make us alive in Christ, we should be focused on things above where Christ is (Colossians 3:1–4). Because of the future return of Christ in glory and the associated glorification of believers, we should put on the new self—walking in the newness of life and avoiding the idolatry of focusing on things that serve the flesh (Colossians 3:5–11).
An important aspect of walking in this newness of life is in how believers treat one another, and that should be characterized by love and its specific expressions like compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (Colossians 3:12–14). Those expressions of love ought to be based on the peace that God has provided us through Christ, and that peace of Christ should be a controlling factor in how we think and act within the body—because we have been called to be part of that body with other believers. We ought also to be grateful for this (Colossians 3:15).
The key is to diligently allow the word of Christ to be at home in us—to dwell richly in us (Colossians 3:16a). As His Word shapes us, we can be sure that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory. The Word should change how we talk to each other, providing us avenues to build one another up and to teach each other—again, this is always to be accompanied by gratitude and thankfulness to God (Colossians 3:16b).
After providing these directions, and before discussing the expectations of our conduct in specific relationships (Colossians 3:18—4:6), Paul covers overarching principles that help us make sure that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory (Colossians 3:17). In this also we are to express thankfulness.
We are given important tools that enable us to make sure that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory (Colossians 3:17). Those tools include a heavenly focused mindset (Colossians 3:2), considering the “old self” to be dead and putting on the new self (Colossians 3:5–10), putting on a heart that expresses love and its individual characteristics (Colossians 3:11–14), allowing His peace to govern our hearts (Colossians 3:15), immersing ourselves in the Bible, which is allowing His word to be at home in us (Colossians 3:16), and being constantly filled with and focused on gratitude and thanksgiving (Colossians 3:15, 16, 17). When we are putting these tools to use, we are more likely to ensure that whatever we do in word or deed is for God’s glory (Colossians 3:17).

Yeah, I just created weeks of work by testing out the upgrade and destroying the test system, then realizing that I really don’t want to do a simple recovery, because I might as well do big fixes now. Basically I forced myself to fix everything now instead of after the midterms. I had some good posts that now have to wait. Ubuntu is helping Fauci and his evil buddies.
Bottom line, don’t upgrade. Stay with 22 until May and 24 until 2029 or whenever.

I wonder how much this affects some of the Ubuntu derivatives like Mint and Zorin.
I wondered because I have Mint on my old Windows 10 computer and Zorin on my laptop. I just asked the Google AI, and it says that Mint won’t be much affected but Zorin will be highly affected. That’s too bad – I like Zorin a lot and hope it isn’t ruined by this.
Yeah, I’m not sure of the extent of the damage, but I know that the upgrade software is crap. The upgrade software used to be one of the most solid parts of the distro.
Clean installs are typically easier and less buggy. But I no longer trust it. It seems half-baked.
Brave Ai didn’t catch that Zorin would be affected, so good idea to check more than one Ai.
I don’t use any of it yet, but if I was going to try Linux, it was likely going to be either Mint or Zorin.
Mint maintains a version, “LMDE”, which is Linux Mint Debian Edition — not based on Ubuntu.
I asked Brave Ai exactly that the other day (about Mint and Zorin OS specifically) when I first heard about this, and Brave said not much, at least not until the end of support for either one, IIRC.
Some better news by the second day. I think they will “fix” it and it will be OK.
It’s fixable. A clean install seems to run nicely. I think that the upgrade itself, and the product systems resulting from upgrades, are sketchy.
Never even consider 26.04 before 26.04.1 comes out.

Agreed. Those installation bug fixes are pretty light in both number and significance, meaning the bad boys are not getting fixed until then at the soonest.
To me, it indicates a systemic loss of focus on Ubuntu’s core mission. IMO, if the installer bugs are strongly fixed in .2 it means they got the message. If it’s still sloppy, it means they haven’t.
I also suspect they’re using a lot of AI coding, and the AI built-in biases are part of the focus loss.

I guarantee it doesn’t suck as much as Ubuntu 16.04 ‘Xenial’, the last LTS with the Unity desktop. Or 14.04 ‘Trusty’, the last LTS to use Upstart initialization. Or 10.04 ‘Lucid’, which bungled the GNOME 2>3 upgrade so badly that Mint recoded the previous version as ‘Cinnamon’ (and MATE recoded the previous version as MATE).
What Ubuntu brought to the table was the .04/.10 cycle of releases, and the LTS releases every 2 years in April, and the strength of their repos. It was never the cute animals or the color scheme.
So, what makes Ubuntu repositories better than Debian? After all, they start with Debian contributors…. To start with, Ubuntu starts with the most recent Debian release, applies all the security patches, and recompiles with a common set of compiler flags, that allows debuggers to travel between modules included in different packages.
Let’s look at an upgrade from 8/20 — “Upgrade: wget:amd64 (1.21.4-1ubuntu4.4, 1.21.4-1ubuntu4.5)”. The wget guys are currently on 2.2.1, Ubuntu 26.04 is on 1.25.0, Ubuntu 24.04 is 1.21.4. This reflects Debian 13 ‘trixie’ having 1.25.0 and Debian 12 ‘bookworm’ having 1.21.3. The package version being “1.21.4-1ubuntu” means that it has been recompiled with Ubuntu flags, and “1.21.4-1ubuntu4.5” means that it has been patched since. If you want the package ‘wget’, that is a nice version to install.
A large part of the problem from there is from software sources other than formal repos. I have to load browsers from ppa’s to keep them current. Ubuntu has decided to load Firefox from snap. Various other programs are available as flatpak, and then development packages rely on python modules loaded through pip, “crates” loaded from rust, RubyGems, and other sources not as well protected as formal repo packages.
Well, I survived and even enjoyed all those creaky releases, but this thing, as wisely stated in the criticism you thankfully posted, betrays core principles in a way that makes me think the ChiComs are in control, with an eye toward doing a “TikTok” on Linux for The Masses. A sad day when the Ubuntu installation makes SuSE’s YAST look awesome! Seriously, I’m tempted to look at distros I’m not even sure still exist! 😂

Linux started as a project by a student in Finland. Since then, it’s gone worldwide and the former student in Finland is a middle-aged guy in Portland, OR.
If you hit the webpage https://www.linuxfoundation.org/ , the title of the page is “Decentralized innovation, built with trust”. There are 855K developers contributing code from all around the globe.
With “trust” in the title and “decentralization” also mentioned, one might think that bad actors are inevitable. Fortunately, these are unusually argumentative people and nothing gets in without a drubbing from experts in the field.

I haven’t been much of a fan of Ubuntu since I had to use it in some work-related context a couple years ago. Too much bling and sudden notifications and pop-ups about updates and someone having posted something on Facebook… Might as well use Windows — lots of pop-ups and such there as well, but it is kinda expected to come with the territory.
So there is mostly Debian and the MATE desktop now, on those machines, work-related and otherwise that do not need the otherwise inevitable Windows 11.
But there is a tendency for these distros to grow even fatter. I noticed that the Raspbian 32-bit system is pushing the limits of the older and smaller Pi 1 and Pi Zero devices. While 32-bit Debian-related Linux is is kind of EOL, the 32-bit Pi zero, Pi1 and Pi2 devices have plenty of life left in them.
So enter NetBSD. Which works pretty well even on these smaller and older units, for what they are being used for.
For the 64-bit devices, Raspbian works well. So does Armbian and Devuan and the BSDs … so there is more of a choice there.
Yes, Ubuntu isn’t the sleekest and sexist distro, but she brought Linux to Grandma and young kids, and could actually be recommended to normies for home and travel use on old computers. Not this release. Not until the installer is bulletproof, at the very least.

I have tested ubuntu 26.04 in a virtual machine. I use professionally Ubuntu 24.04 in some laptops and workstations and my goal was to see if version 26.04 can be safely used in the future. My test is to see if “innovations” introduced by Ubuntu that have been highly criticized, are reversible and can be easily modified.
1) First of all I have completely eliminated snapd from the system. After I installed firefox-esr from mozilla ppa. I am not interested to other packages that was preinstalled in snap. I put snapd in blacklist in /etc/apt/preferences.d
2) I have installed gnome-tweaks and gnome-shell-extensions. The most important extensions are for me the “gnome-menu” (Apps Menu) and and “user themes”. As you know, the nice “Ubuntu dock” is already installed by default.
3) As well indicated in the web, it is easy to restore the good gnu “sudo” by using “update-alternatives”
4) I have restored the “coreutils” from gnu with a simple command : sudo apt remove coreutils-from-uutils –allow-remove-essential and put the rust coreutils in blacklist.
5) I have installed compilers g++, gcc, make, etc with single install commands, avoiding to use build-essential that has a dependence on rust coreutils.
My opinion is that Ubuntu 26.04 can be easily “tamed” and criticisms are a little exaggerated. As a professional user I was anyway troubled by the fact that some aspects of the “core gnu linux” were modified by Ubuntu for the first time.
To my opinion there was no logic reason to eliminate the possibility to use X11 in login. I use Wayland but often I have some problem with it and in some machines i switched to X11 (this is no more possible with 26.04)
Anyway Ubuntu 26.04 is running fine and seems a good distribution, also if i shall remain with version 24.04 in real machines for a relatively long time.

I am struggling with something.
I have been reading the Bible aloud and recording it for a Christmas gift to my family. Reading out loud is different somehow. My pastor says if you want to hear God, read the Bible aloud. I think he’s right.
I have been reading 1 Corinthians, and I was struck by something. I have said for a while now that if I read something in the Bible outside of the Four Gospels that seems contradictory to what Jesus Himself did or said, I go with Jesus.
Many people will say nothing in the rest of the New Testament contradicts Jesus, but I don’t think that’s true. When Paul says that women should “keep silent” in the churches, that seems to me to contradict the fact that Jesus empowered a woman as his first evangelist when he revealed Himself to the Samaritan woman at the well.
So I’m reading out loud, and it hit me hard that in 1 Corinthians, there are several instances where Paul states (paraphrasing) this is from me not God. Well, then, what am I to make of that?
I know the Bible says “all Scripture” is useful for teaching. That appears in 2 Timothy 3. But 2 Timothy was written around 64-67 A.D. The Four Gospels were written between 65-100 A.D. The “Scripture” 2 Timothy was referring to could not have included the Four Gospels, only the Old Testament, so Paul could only have been referring to that.
I am, as I said, struggling with this.
I have a lot to say here, much of it possibly helpful, but I need to complete a machine rebuild first, so that my thoughts can go toward completeness and not brevity. Hang on!

The reason why people say this, or more broadly, the Bible (Old Testament and New) doesn’t contradict itself, is because all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and God is perfect, and God knows the end from the beginning, and therefore God does not (cannot) contradict Himself.
So if we see something which on the surface appears to be a contradiction, we are misunderstanding something.
Yes, that’s 2 Timothy. But it appears Paul could only have been referring to Old Testament scripture, as all New Testament scripture appears to have been written after he wrote that.
Which makes sense, as Paul was a student of Gamaliel, one of the most well-known teachers of The Law, a Pharisee, and a member of the Sanhedrin. Paul knew OT scripture like the back of his hand. And if you back up some from the 2 Timothy verse about the scriptures, you find this:
2 Timothy 3
14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for [c]instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
So it’s pretty clear he was talking about the OT, since Timothy could not have been taught any other scriptures from childhood.
This isn’t a crisis of faith for me or anything. I just decided after having read commentaries, going to Bible studies, and listening to other’s expositions about the Bible, to instead just read it as it plainly reads, without interpretation. Most of the Book is pretty straightforward, it seems to me. And I think people read things into parts of it that aren’t there at all.

27-32 Victory over the desires of the heart, must be attended with painful exertions. But it must be done. Every thing is bestowed to save us from our sins, not in them. All our senses and powers must be kept from those things which lead to transgression. Those who lead others into temptation to sin, by dress or in other ways, or leave them in it, or expose them to it, make themselves guilty of their sin, and will be accountable for it. If painful operations are submitted to, that our lives may be saved, what ought our minds to shrink from, when the salvation of our souls is concerned? There is tender mercy under all the Divine requirements, and the grace and consolations of the Spirit will enable us to attend to them.
33-37 There is no reason to consider that solemn oaths in a court of justice, or on other proper occasions, are wrong, provided they are taken with due reverence. 43-48 The Jewish teachers by “neighbour” understood only those who were of their own country, nation, and religion, whom they were pleased to look upon as their friends. The Lord Jesus teaches that we must do all the real kindness we can to all, especially to their souls. We must pray for them. While many will render good for good, we must render good for evil; and this will speak a nobler principle than most men act by. Others salute their brethren, and embrace those of their own party, and way, and opinion, but we must not so confine our respect. It is the duty of Christians to desire, and aim at, and press towards perfection in grace and holiness. And therein we must study to conform ourselves to the example of our heavenly Father, #1Pe 1:15,16|. This seems huge to me. I need to read it again to try to take in and understand everything.
I have often wondered how influencers make their money, besides from clicks and subscriptions. This article raises questions.
There are people whom I consider to be wholly in the MAGA camp, like Benny Johnson and Trish Regan. But I start to wonder about their (all of them) having to come up with content so often (daily?), and where they are getting their information. Sometimes the videos are just a recap of news that I had already seen. Sometimes it’s nice to have validation and to think that a lot of others see things the same way.
I have thought that the internet’s allowing for the dissemination of information that the mainstream media hid was a good thing, but I think we have moved past that. I question the need for our being inundated with influencer videos. Finding out who is behind them and who is paying for them is important, IMO. When some of them start to lead in an unhealthy direction, as has happened with the Tucker/Owens/etc. camp, that makes me think there are forces influencing the influencers in order to influence us.
Information is power, and we need to know more.
