Poor little otter. That dang orca wasnt going to give up. I appreciate orcas but they are as dangerous as grest whites or maybe more so, since orcas hunt them and hunt gray whales.
I’m surprised the orca didn’t try to flip the boat.
The Fiancee and I did a whale-watching run out of Victoria, BC a couple of years ago. We were on a large (20+ person) inflatable. I have no doubt that an orca could bite it, deflate it, and leave people stranded.
They seem to have decided that boats are noncombatants and that people are generally friendly. We had one youngster come toward the boat repeatedly jumping out of the water, then passing under and continuing on its way — all shadowed by mom. Mom didn’t discourage it at all. And there are a lot of anecdotes showing cetaceans coming to humans for human problems — like being tangled in nets….
…..and, of course, humans responding enthusiastically.
Sometimes, even, for non-human problems. This orca might live to be 50 and made a severe rookie mistake chasing seals. I suspect it’ll never say a utter a negative hypersonic squeak about humans.

As a follow-up, they’ve now decided that he’s a him. And he’s still around as of some months back.
Orcas hunt in packs.
They don’t do grey whales everwhere, just where packs have learned to do so.
The orcas can’t really bite through the flesh of the whale, so they have to do something a little more complex. The whale’s natural defense from an attack is to do a deep dive, being that it can dive deeper and for longer than orcas.
The way an attack works is that the pod will swim up to the whale and give it “the eye”, informing it that it will be killed. The next time the whale is on the surface to breathe, the orcas will play slip-and-slide across its blowhole opening, interfering with its breathing until it is annoyed enough to dive. Then, scouts from the pod will dive to an intermediate depth where they can keep track of the whale while the pod stays over on the surface. Scouts will rotate with other scouts so that the whale is continually monitored, though they can’t match the whale’s duration underwater.
When the whale returns to the surface, the pod is waiting, and starts covering the blowhole again while the increasingly frantic whale tries to recharge its oxygen levels for another dive. Once the whale has enough, another dive begins. Scouts track the whale and the rest of the pod follows.
Early on, the dives can be in excess of half-an-hour each. After several hours, they get shorter and shorter, until the exhausted whale is smothered on the surface. Only then will the orcas feed — on the whale’s tongue, the only unarmored meat available. As the whale’s carcass takes on water, it slowly begins to sink, and the orcas seldom get all of the tongue before the rest of the whale is lost to the depths.
Although orcas are worldwide, this is a behavior only seen in a few pods in specific locales.
It should be noted that the obvious countermeasure is for the whales to interfere with the scouts’ surfacing and drown the scouts…..unfortunately, there is no known way to educate whales about this because they do not travel in schools.
Powerpoint demonstrations work well on big ass humans. Maybe would work on big ass whales. Just saying.
I watched one attack a baby and the mother couldnt save it. Those pod hunters are vicious and so smart.
Evolution is an unforgiving teacher, and many get only a single chance at their lessons.
The thing with packs is that there can be some level of specialization and division of labors. The scouts probably didn’t participate in smothering, because they were getting ready for further deep dives. Scouts at the surface had to keep track of their deep counterparts to do swapouts. Pod leaders at the surface had to keep track of the scouts in order to have the pod at the whale’s point of surfacing.
It can be startlingly efficient.
Most carnivores kill their prey with their teeth, starting when the prey is alive. It’s not pushing a button in another room, it’s quite intimate. But I think most predators and prey would agree that it is not vicious.
It’s strictly business.
Sometimes the predator doesn’t bother to ensure the prey is dead before beginning to eat. I doubt the prey would consider that non-vicious.

I’d tend to limit vicious to targets that were not legitimately food.
Ive read about how they get the great whites by drowning them. The pattern of attack has been seen repeatedly. They apparently love the taste of the liver. Theres speculation among researchers that some of the great whites are migrating away from areas where the pods may be travelling dt risk. Doubt a great white thinks on that level though.
The otter’s giant stroke of luck is that the orca probably expected it to head for shore and had its attention focused in that direction. I’m sure it didn’t realize that the boat captain would have willingly transported it anywhere it wanted to go as a courtesy.

It is hard to know what relief is needed — if, indeed, the reactions are uniform (which is highly unlikely). This leads to generic-sounding and insincere-sounding prayers, however actually sincere and heartfelt they may be. Remember that God knows what is in the hearts of those praying better than he knows the flapping of their lips. When family, friends, associates, the Church, and others buzz about your family in its grief, there will be awkward moments as words fail. Look to God to see their hearts.
Believe me, we know this.

Yes, we DO have an airport but the airlines seem to be unaware of it.
Like Augusta, Ga., Steve. Decent, modern airport and at least 2-3 hours to another one yet very limited service. Just the winter market to Florida would be a winner (like Spirit Airlines), not to mention the Masters. But I’m sure it’s been thoroughly analyzed. OTOH, how would they know the potential if there’s no survey?

I now travel almost exclusively out of that airport, even overseas. But, to go to Florida, for example the rerouting is so bad it’s easier to make the 8 hour drive!
And, yet there are direct flights to DC.
I know… one wonders who makes these decisions and who gets paid to support them!
Many years ago, there was a denver->chicago->Colorado Springs->Denver loop run by one of the big airlines (and it ran the other way too).
The problem was the damn plane from Chicago was always late. Which meant you’d not get to Denver on time and miss your connection, if you were connecting in Denver. You were never warned that this was a likelihood when you booked a connecting flight (so that you could take a different flight and schedule a longer layover in Denver, which you’d actually spend sitting on your ass in COS), nor did that airline simply schedule a long wait in Colorado Springs before moving on to Denver.
Eventually even people who hated the drive would just drive the 75-90 minutes to Denver.
Well that major airline finally did the other obvious thing, which was to not include Chicago in the loop, and now the only flight it has out of COS is to Denver.
I infer with a high likelihood of being correct that that flight in the video was flying out of Denver.

Cool videos. The area with the otter is familiar to me. When our children were young we would charter a fishing boat just north of there. When we caught a cod or small bass, by throwing it in the air allowed one of the multitude of eagles to swoop down and snatch it from out of the air. And when the Orcas came thru the fish left post haste.

I’m quite positive that my mother’s cousin who died yesterday will be listed as a COVID death since she “tested positive” over a week ago. The truth is that she almost died of congestive heart failure last year, and she had pneumonia. COVID may well have had nothing to do with it.

My almost 102 year old uncle is currently in the VA hospital. Now, he has been isolated in his room in the senior care facility for months, yet when he entered the hospital (probably never to leave)…he was tested and found positive for C-19. Personally, I think Pence will do the right thing.
He campaigned hard for months…he knows they won.
He knows that we know they won.
He knows that there was massive fraud going on…and that the Trump team has the evidence that proves it.
He knows what would happen to our country if the Dems/ChiComs are allowed to take control.
So I just don’t see Pence betraying us.

this stems from “lawyers” –apparently Gohmert’s lawyers contacted the VP to see if he would join in their lawsuit trying to clarify his “responsibilities and duties” concerning accepting fraudulent electors and he said no. that caused the flurry of articles that he is betraying POTUS.
I wasn’t there…I don’t know what they proposed or how it was said. there is no indication that the VP is willing to do anything other than what he and POTUS most assuredly have discussed.
with all the misinformation and distraction going on, it is a confusing time.

Well, I think Pence knows he doesn’t NEED to join a lawsuit.
The Constitution and the law is clear on this, as little as it says.
That people don’t understand how the VP was originally selected is getting in the way of understanding.
Back in the day, the VP was NOT a running-mate, but a RIVAL for the Presidency. The second-runner-up in the Electoral College became the VP. Thomas Jefferson giving himself the Presidency led to a LONG feud between himself and John Adams, only resolved late in their lives. They were both up for President in1800.
Adams had beaten Jefferson by three Electoral votes in 1796, and was President from 1796-1800. Their ideologies were very different, so they didn’t govern well together.
In the 1800 election, Jefferson was the “vote counter” because he was VP, and by most accounts, he awarded himself the Presidency by counting highly irregular votes from GEORGIA (constant troublemakers, that state).
Adams and Jefferson didn’t speak to each other for 12 years.
WE have changed the rules in practice, but the LAW is not practice. Trump pulls these arcane laws out, like he just did with that Impound thing, and he uses them. Will that happen on January 6? I guess we will see.
VP Pence joing a lawsuit, and I don’t know the details makes no sense to me.
VP Pence simply needs to follow the law and do what IS Right.
If it is uncharted territory, VP Pence simply needs to be logical and within the Constitution.
Additional lawyer yammering and court cases MUDDY the process. Potentially giving Lawfare an angle to screw up “best intended lawsuit(s).

Doesn’t matter if someone has leverage over him, Pence that is. Doesn’t matter death threats or anything else.
The fraud MUST stop and Pence knows it.
Except if Pence is a black hat, then he doesn’t care about any of that, at all. He’s not going to go rogue, he is going to follow his orders.
And if Pence is a white hat, and Trump tells him to declare DJT president-elect, Pence will do that. And if Trump tells him to declare Biden president-elect, he will do that too.
Both sides have a plan.
What Pence does depends on whose side he is ultimately on.
If he is a black hat, then almost certainly he has orders to declare Biden president-elect.
If he is a white hat, then it could go either way, depending on which route DJT wants to take.
If DJT wants to create a giant %$@#storm and then play defense for the next two weeks (why?), then DJT could order Pence to declare Trump president-elect.
If DJT wants keep a low profile, like an attack sub, and stay on offense, then he orders Pence to declare Biden president-elect.
It doesn’t matter either way what happens on January 6th, because ‘declass’ proves fraud, and fraud vitiates everything.
DJT is going to win either way.
So the determining factor is this: what outcome on January 6th is best for the President’s objectives between now and January 20th?

Or is it better for the President (and the country) to let all the loons think they’ve won, to continue to drop their masks and gloat and expose their plans for ‘us’, as DJT prepares to drop the Big One, to the relief of nearly everyone, and saves the day (and the country, and by extension, the world) just before inauguration day?

Which way is the path of least enemy resistance?
Which way causes POTUS the least amount of problems to deal with?
Which way causes any and all remaining masks to drop?
Which way prevents civil unrest between now and January 20th, at which point DJT, having been sworn in, with his hands untied, can unleash the full force of Law (and military if necessary) to crush the traitors?
I don’t know what’s going to happen on January 6th.
I’m just saying there are plenty of reasons why it would be good for DJT (and for us) if Biden is declared president-elect.
OR something happens which leaves it up in the air, i.e., Congress is unable to make a determination. That would work to Trump’s advantage also.
I realize everyone would like this to be over on January 6th, but would it be over, if Trump is declared president-elect on January 6th?
Or would it just provide an excuse (and the time) for the enemy to do as much damage as possible?

For some reason I cannot articulate, I have never had confidence in Pence, as much as I tried to like him.
And for an equally inarticulable reason, I believe Pence will do the right thing and prevent the election from being stolen. The evidence is too overwhelming, and the consequences too definitive for our country. IMO Pence will see his destiny in the moment, and his faith will sustain him.

Gist: Pence’s legal team and Gohmert’s lawyer tried to hammer out an agreement on the “underlying legal issues” on how you count the votes. But they couldn’t reach a deal. So Gohmert sued Pence. At least that’s what Gohmert’s lawyer writes in the lawsuit.

One thing people might remember is churches. Asking for help at a church might get you a tank of gas, a meal, or a place to park. When I worked in the church office a few years ago, we actually had a fund for people who came in with needs like that.

So Rep. Gohmert’s lawsuit involving VP Pence will draw attention to the fact that VP Pence could ignore contested electors in battleground states to help elect Trump.
There is good precedent too: Thomas Jefferson in 1800.
Will VP Pence actually do it? I doubt it.

What you’re witnessing is the nasty public divorce of the GOP establishment from President Trump.
A lot of speculation from people who don’t know anymore than what the rest of us know. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and this falls under opinion.
Exactly. At this point the only accurate thing anyone can say is “I don’t know”. As for opinions, well, you know the old saying.
That does cut both ways.
There are people here who simply assert that Pence will do the right thing, sometimes even going so far as to title their post “critical thinking test” (which they then themselves fail).

And should Pence “betray” Trump, people will THEN have two types of excuses:
(1) The plan includes getting Pence to betray Trump
(2) Pence needed to install Biden to complete the crime so there is a crime
There is ALWAYS a hopium story of the future, just as there is an Eeyore story, just as there is a region where the wavefunction tapers off.
I don’t criticize people who are thinking, at the moment, that the future might proceed anywhere under the curve, including the extremes, but there ARE alternatives that make sense, and denying them is not sensible.
I am preparing myself for all futures. Some are exciting.

Thanks for asking patfrederick. I’m okay, but exhausted. Mom died peacefully this morning at 12:30a.m. We kept 24 hour vigil since the morning of Dec 24 – three of us taking shifts. We all were there last night because it was clear that she was going.
I took the night shift, and didn’t get much sleep throughout the days. So, I am going to spend the next few days in bed.
Funeral, and burial is tentatively on Monday. May I ask your prayers for good weather as we will be travelling about 100 miles to bury her in the village where we grew up, and where Dad is. We now live in the city…
…where Dad is buried. She will be buried beside him.
