Housing news out of, Great Falls, Montana.
I just visited a shop class in Great Falls, Montana where high school students are building houses for people who need a place to call home.
Let that sink in for a moment.
High schoolers in Great Falls Montana, under the guidance of an excellent shop instructor and lots of community support, are building actual houses. Not birdhouses or doll houses – real homes, built to code from the ground up for real people, and move-in ready.
Yesterday, I toured the latest home these kids are in the process of building. It’s the 48th such home built since 1998, through this remarkable program. While I was there, I ran into @GregForMontana. Like me, the Governor was blown away by what these kids were doing and took the time to talk to each one of them, thanking them for their hard work and congratulating them for what they’d accomplished. I was then invited to join the Governor on stage at Great Falls High, where I answered a few questions about mikeroweWORKS, talked about the many opportunities in the skilled trades, and discussed the ways we might be able to encourage more projects like this one, in Montana and beyond.
It’s encouraging to see public/private partnerships done right. And really, it’s not that complicated; it just takes a few stubborn people in various organizations who won’t take no for an answer. In this case, too many to name, but a quick shout out to Pete Pace, the shop teacher at the center of High School Homes, the administrators in the school district, the principal at Great Falls High, Sherrie Arey and her devoted crew at @neighborworks, the incredibly generous executives at @WellsFargowho offered another round of financial support, and a Governor with the good sense to push through the normal bureaucratic nonsense that kills programs like this. Bravo to all!

PS. This is the third time in two months I’ve seen a program like this in action. The first was in Western North Carolina, (Rebuilding the Hollars), the second was in New Orleans, (@uCCNOLA.) The projects all have one thing in common – a shop class with an exceptional instructor. Like I said, it takes support from every direction, but a high school shop class is always where it starts.
For years, I’ve argued that removing shop class from high schools was a mistake that would deny a whole generation of students’ critical exposure to a long list of essential careers and rob them of an opportunity to prepare for the all-important apprenticeships on which most skilled careers are built. Today, standing in the shop class at Great Falls, watching dozens of engaged students cutting, hammering, measuring, and fabricating, it occurred to me that I was wrong. Taking shop class out of high school was not merely a mistake – it was the single dumbest decision in the history of modern education. We didn’t just rob a whole generation of students, we robbed ourselves, in a colossal, self-inflicted wound that’s led directly to a host of unintended consequences – including the current shortages in every essential skilled trade.
Correcting it, should be at or near the top of every Governor’s agenda in every single state. Because tomorrow’s skilled workforce is currently in the 8th grade, and if we don’t meet these kids where they are – right now – with programs like this, we’re in for a world of hurt.

Hubby’s band played at an annual Christian Rock event, called Jam for the Lamb, at his then lead guitarist’s church. The pastor rode his Harley into the sanctuary to “Born to be Wild” over the loud speakers. Interestingly daughter’s FIL is now the keyboardist for that same church. There were many bands after the service in an outdoor pavilion, classic cars, serious motorcycles, & lots of food. It was pretty fun. Don’t recall the sermon but the bike’s entrance was epic!

I have observed, in my own experience, how often the Sunday sermon does not survive the after service meal. For some reason I have always thought that was not quite right.

I think that is Paul in 1st or 2nd Corinthians. If I recall the passage, Paul is making a point that God’s wisdom is different than the wisdom of the secular. He proves the point by making a point about God using the foolishness of preaching to save the world.

One of the best things my dad did for me was drag me along when we built the five houses that sent my sister and me to college.
Not that I appreciated it at the time. I whined, moaned, bitched, and complained at every step. Other kids in Junior High or High School didn’t have to do this!
But I learned so much that has been valuable over-and-over again.
That plan in Montana sounds great.
Hubby’s step dad put him & his spoiled rich friend to work on all sorts of building & improvement projects especially in the summers of his junior & senior high years. When he was new into trucking he was commented upon by a customer, iirc, that said “I see you’re from a generation that still knows how to work!” School of hard knocks 😉 😉
I learned more than I was supposed to on many occasions.
I think it was on house #2, my dad and I were going to Builders’ Emporium to get more supplies and I nearly had to beg him to get a new blade for his circular saw. The old one had lost all of its tooth caps and most of its sharpness and smoked every time my dad shoved it through a piece of lumber. We were sheathing the roof and cutting plywood all over the place.
When we got back to the jobsite, I changed out the blade.
So my dad propped-up a piece of plywood to cut, spun-up the saw, and prepared to shove the blade through. Instead, it went through with almost no resistance, like butter, and my dad fell forward onto the edge of the plywood with an “oof.”
Which taught me that a power tool should be doing most of the work — if it is not, there’s something wrong with the tool.

I had a knock down drag out fight with my Jr High because I wanted to take shop not Home Ec. (required)
I flunked Home Ec (on purpose) and when I was called to the office I gave Mr Hubner a major lecture on WHY kids should take a COMBINED home ec – shop class that included balancing a check book, checking the oil, changing a tire, boiling an egg and other life skills.
He didn’t say a word. He was also my history teacher and knew I was smart and usually very quiet.

I found Bread at the time had a thyroid killer, bromine, instead of IODINE. So quit the store bought bread. Heck quit the wheat products period and eat veggies meat and fruit instead. If you HAVE to have a starch, Rice that was refrigerated over night (resistant starch) or a potato as a treat.
Adding iodine does wonders for lethargy and weight gain problems.
OH, and FAT!!! Fat kills the appetite.
We need fat. I use duck fat making red cabbage. I made a potato soup on Friday used bacon fat. I had not made the soup for year and it was delish. I use organic potatoes. My husband’s A1C did not go up. True amount is important. Sugar is the killer.
People need to make their own bread it is easy and grind their own flour. Since hospital stay I eat sometimes 2 slices of bread a week Organic no GMO . I make bread from all kind of flour. My thyroid is getting better. For last 3 years I went on low carb seldom bread any kind of carbs except blueberries. I find out I do better eating one apple a day and right now everyday red grapes. Maybe it all depends on genes what foods one grew up with. My blood test is good .
I am watching German doctors who are informative on diet vitamins. Germany has the same problems in modern time we have. I have an Alpine cookbook and am happily surprised to find wild herbal soups and soups with dandelion added instead other greens.
I make sourdough bread. It breaks down the gluten, so it isn’t much of an issue. I can eat any kind of bread, but this is healthier.
I grow my own potatoes, and they are nothing like store-bought. I’m not sure why, but it’s true. And of course I grow my own veggies, and a lot of my own fruit.
I eat a LOT of meat.
Fat is necessary to life, lol. But only good fat. No fake crap.

I don’t understand why a court would have the right to intervene in safety rules for truckers. I thought courts were there for people who have disputes to lay them out and get rulings. I didn’t think the purpose of the courts was to evaluate every move the POTUS and his administration makes and rule according to their will.

Today’s the opening of Rifle Season, Deer Hunting, in Michigan. Hubby & my daughter just left a few minutes ago for a whirlwind overnight trip. This is the first overnight hunting excursion Clarissa will have done since becoming a mom. I was supposed to watch 2 1/2 year old Lillian but apparently SIL doesn’t have soccer coaching responsibilities this weekend so is going to watch his daughter solo for the first time (with me as backup). I’ve been a bit under the weather so kind of appreciate the unexpected reprieve.
My brother also took my dad to hunting camp a couple days ago for Dad’s first trip since his long time hunting buddy Clyde died about a year ago & since Mom died 6 months ago today. My dad’s not generally a melancholy person but this trip might be a bit bittersweet.
I shared this poem my husband wrote & shared for Clyde’s funeral before but it catches much of the essence of that long term, 6+ decade, hunting relationship:
The Hunters Heart
I watched two friends sharing life,
and walking through the woods
Hunting, stalking, laughing,
and even cutting wood
Sitting together for hours,
and sharing many thoughts

I grew up in the world of point-to-point wiring and tubes; the Philips EE kits (Norelco in the US, IIRC) used discrete components to teach electronics. Nowadays, everything is little modules (because they are safer and kids won’t eat them, etc.) and kids have no concept whatsoever of the basic elements, let alone the basic concepts underlying computers, radios, phones, etc.
Probably also meant to dumb us all down.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. Sometimes the answers to problems are right in front of us. The best responses were from people who actually work on cars and trucks. We have a couple of folks that do that on here.
The manufacturers design vehicles to get through assembly lines faster and easier. That is their priority to reduce costs and get the product out the door. They spend next to no time on designing vehicles to be easily serviced at lower costs by mechanics, much less the owners. Then they promote extended warranties and to compete, they shave the cost of the warranties as much as possible. Which means dealers and repair services receive less compensation for repairs under warranty and are expected to do them in far less time than it takes..
The result is like what is now present in the health care industry.
If you are interested in a mechanic type career, why would you pursue it knowing that you are going to be frustrated and overworked doing stupid stuff that could be simply addressed and made better by the manufacturers?

He’s not in pain, is staying home, and the only reason I would contact the doctors if he starts having a lot of pain. That is his wish, and we will abide by it. I had a similar situation with my mother – yes, a good bit different from that of a spouse – and while terribly sad for me, still it helped to know that her trials in life were ending, and that some of my trials in caring so long for her were coming to a close.

At the end of the first clip, Shapiro says that living where you were born and your parents are buried is essentially the opposite of the history of America. And he is correct in that. I study people throughout American history, that’s what I do. And they moved, a lot. They went where things seemed better, and then they saw more somewhere else, and they moved again. And again. There were gold rushes, land rushes, land lotteries, and such. Americans have always done that.
And as to the second clip, “retirement” at 65 is a relatively recent concept, too. Before social security, people didn’t “retire” at all. They farmed for subsistence until they died. Or they worked in some way to support themselves. If they got really old, they lived with their kids who took care of them. Retirement as a concept started after WWII. And it’s a socialist idea to tax people and provide the “social safety net.”
Also, I don’t think “retirement” is particularly healthy. For men, especially, work provides purpose and fulfillment. The spryest, most vibrant people I have ever known were working into their old age. I don’t ever want the DH or me to “retire.” Slow down, of course, but not work? Crazy talk around here.
That’s my two cents. Which are now collectibles or soon to be, I suppose.

There are countries in the middle east who pay their citizens handsomely, from natural resources (mostly oil).
Most Americans live like Timothy Cratchit by comparison. We think we’re a wealthy nation, but people in actual wealthy nations would commit suicide, before living like many Americans do.

IMO, at a quick glance that reads like a marketing piece rather than a scientific one, and I guess that’s what it is for, to market the supplement Paratoxil. I would do a lot of research before taking it.
Through the years I’ve seen a lot of those kinds of claims, that everyone has parasites and needs treatment, and that parasites are the cause of just about every ill known to man. I have doubts about whether either of those statements is true.
Also, there are a lot of different kinds of parasites. It could be a waste of time and money if one treats for something that is not present.
I’m leary of the parasite flush craze. Parasites are more of a problem in other countries. Not so much in the US. That said, if it’s safe and easy, why not occasionally?
Suppressed immune function from malnutrition might be usual reason for parasites, but we now have new, medical sources of immune suppression. And a large influx of parasite carriers immigrating here. I’m not buying the “Americans don’t have parasites as a regular issue” line at this point.

I don’t like that style of marketing. And there certainly are other ways to approach curing a case of parasites. I just wish doctors would be allowed to admit it can be the cause of things. For example, a friend’s daughter loves sushi and now has a M.S. diagnosis. Checking the literature my friend found cases where parasites from sushi can get in the brain and give M.S. like symptoms!
