Bijou Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce London dry gin
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce Green Chartreuse
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and fill with cracked ice. Stir well for 20 seconds and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Twist a piece of lemon peel over the drink and use as garnish.
  2. For a more modern version, use 1 1/2 ounces gin, 1/2 ounce vermouth, and 1/2 ounce Chartreuse.

The 1988 carbon dating used a portion of the Shroud that was rewoven by well meaning French Nuns after a fire in 1532. For those who scoff at French reweaving, my grandmother’s aunt had a French reweaving business that was used by dry cleaners across the country for decades in the 20th century. As a little kid, I remember the magnifying glass which was on an adjustable arm with a fluorescent light that the reweavers used when they patched holes in clothing. (Somebody in the family still has one.) I also remember going to the reweaving shop downtown where the elevator was operated by an older gentleman, and there was a gate across the doorway rather than doors. It really was an art form. Aunt R’s best reweaver, G or Mrs. M, patched a silverfish hole in a kilt for me in the 90s. You’d never see that today.

They also are of the same blood type as the blood on the Crown of Thorns in Paris, and The Sudarium in Spain, and every Eucharistic Miracle known. AB for sure, and I’ve read that the Rh is negative.

Whiskey Sour

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 1/2 ounce egg white (optional)
  • Garnish: Angostura bitters

Steps

  1. Add bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white, if using, to a shaker, and dry-shake for 30 seconds without ice.

The author of that piece claims Western Civilization has been in decline for a couple hundred years. I would argue it’s more like five hundred and accelerated in the last three hundred. Music, literature, theater (with maybe Shakespeare as the exception given the coded messaging in his plays) physical media such as marble, oil on canvas, etc., all had their height in pretty much the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Even my beloved Mozart did not compose some of the more complicated a cappella pieces Palestrina did for the Sistine Chapel. DEAR MAGA: TGIF Open Thread 20240809

Bloody Mary

Ingredients

  • Celery salt
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces tomato juice
  • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • 2 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch smoked paprika
  • Garnish: parsley sprig
  • Garnish: 2 green olives
  • Garnish: lime wedge
  • Garnish: celery stalk (optional)

Steps

  1. Pour some celery salt onto a small plate.
  2. Rub the juicy side of the lemon or lime wedge along the lip of a pint glass.
  3. Roll the outer edge of the glass in celery salt until fully coated, then fill the glass with ice and set aside.
  4. Squeeze the lemon and lime wedges into a shaker and drop them in.
  5. Add the vodka, tomato juice, horseradish, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, smoked paprika, plus a pinch of celery salt along with ice and shake gently.
  6. Strain into the prepared glass.
  7. Garnish with parsley sprig, 2 speared green olives, a lime wedge and a celery stalk (optional).
