*The SteveInCO Federal Reserve Note Suckage Index (FRNSI) is a measure of how much the dollar has inflated. It’s the ratio of the current price of gold, to the number of dollars an ounce of fine gold made up when the dollar was defined as 25.8 grains of 0.900 gold. That worked out to an ounce being $20.67+71/387 of a cent. (Note gold wasn’t worth this much back then, thus much gold was $20.67 71/387ths. It’s a subtle distinction. One ounce of gold wasn’t worth $20.67 back then, it was $20.67.) Once this ratio is computed, 1 is subtracted from it so that the number is zero when the dollar is at its proper value, indicating zero suckage.
The Unit You (Probably) Never Heard Of
It’s oftentimes convenient for people in technical fields to think in terms of ratios. For instance, a translucent object might block 90 percent of the light that goes through it.
It makes no sense to talk about the object blocking so-and-so many lumens, because how much it blocks depends on how bright the light source is. But it does make sense to say something like “it blocks 90 percent of the light that goes through it.” Or that it “transmits ten percent of the light that goes through it.” You could write down that its “transmissivity” is 0.1. The problem is that the “transmissivity” could be some really low number, like one over a billion, 0.000000001.
To make the numbers more manageable, use logarithms. 0.1 is 1×10-1, so say the transmissivity is -1. And in the second case, you’re dealing with 1×10-9, so the transmissivity is -9. And you could call the unit the “bel.” So a transmissivity of -1 bel, or -9 bel.
Convenience like this is not quite sufficient reason to justify using a logarithm instead of a “straight” number, though. But it does make sense to do it this way for other reasons. For example, if you’re dealing with a light source, or a signal, going through multiple things that cause a loss, it turns out you multiply the losses together. Going through two translucent objects each of which have a transmissivity of -1 bel, thus each blocking 90 percent of the light, leaves you with one percent–the first object reduces to ten percent, and the second reduces to ten percent of what’s left over, i.e., ten percent of ten percent, which is to say one percent, total transmissivity -2 bels…which is the sum of the two individual transmissivities (-1 each).
But the fact of the matter is, we don’t use bels for this sort of thing. We use units one tenth that size, i.e., decibels. A tenfold reduction is given as -10 decibels (dB), not -1 bel (B). It turns out that -3 dB is roughly 1/2; -6 dB is roughly 1/2*1/2=1/4, -9 dB is 1/8th. Electrical engineers and technicians often deal with losses (and sometimes boosts to signals) and work in decibels all the time, and will often refer to a doubling (or halving) as 3dB.
Photographers work in “stops”–a stop is a doubling or halving of the light hitting the film or sensor–you can go a stop higher by doubling the exposure or changing the aperture by a factor of 1.4 (aperture is an area, so making it 40 percent wider makes it twice as big). So one “stop” is 3dB. If your camera can adjust exposure in thirds of a stop, it’s working in single decibels–unbeknownst to almost all photographers.
Absolute strengths, like say electrical is sometimes characterized in “dBm”–decibels compared to a milliwatt. A ten watt source is “40 dBm” because it’s 10,000 milliwatts and that’s 40 decibels above a milliwatt.
But one of the most common uses of decibels in in something called the “Signal to Noise Ratio” (SNR). Compare the strength of the signal you want to receive–say a radio transmission–and compare it to the strength of the static (noise). You get a ratio; maybe the signal is eight times stronger than the static. Turn that into decibels, and your SNR is 9 dB. If the two levels are identical, SNR is 0 db (not 1).
I didn’t write this section to add to the science series, but rather to explain why I am now about to tell you to…
Consider It Permanent
Before I continue, while you all are still not boiling mad at me, I want to give a loud shoutout to TheseTruths. TheseTruths is the best at identifying logical fallacies and pushing back on the BS that all people sometimes bring here, but some people always bring here. I do not except myself. TheseTruths is better at this than I am. Sometimes I’d read something, it would peg my bullshit meter, but I couldn’t tell why; at least not in a way I could put into words. TheseTruths would often post, identifying exactly why.
You all would do well to emulate These Truths. I hope you can. If Q was there to teach us how to think, then we should think well and not just latch onto whatever bullshit is tossed out there that fits our prejudices.
Anyhow, to start the story, clear back in the Spring, I anticipated working on a big project running into August and decided to curtail writing science posts until then.
In hindsight, though I didn’t know it at the time, the beginning of the end was when two…individuals…decided that because I don’t think it’s a good idea for Iran to have a nuke, I must therefore be more loyal to Israel than the United States. (No, you fucking morons, it’s because I consider an Iranian nuke a threat to the US. And so does President Trump. Is he a Zionist?)
One of the two is a very prolific poster, mostly bullshit, but occasionally I would respond to something that wasn’t just a long discursive dump from the paste buffer. I liked this individual in spite of the bullshit. Not any more; even after all these weeks I have nothing but contempt for her.
My recent total absence from this site starting a couple of weeks later, however, was because I was sick of the histrionics being engaged in at the time (I didn’t say so then, but it was the histrionics over Epstein). There’s no particular reason why that should be the straw that broke the camel’s back. It wasn’t that bad. But in hindsight, it was just sheer luck in timing; I was close to the big “Fuck It” already thanks to the shitbags; this just pushed me over the line.
I thought I simply needed to go away for a while; I fully intended to come back, eventually. I was running out of time for the project anyway, so it was just as well.
I could tell you that the project was a success–but frankly, I doubt anyone will care by the time they get done reading this.
Because a funny thing happened about two weeks after I went completely absent (and well before the last minute crunch on the project).
I realized that on the whole I simply don’t miss this place.
There ARE individual people that I do miss, but the site as a whole? The SNR is less than zero.
It is unfortunate that I must leave some of you in the position of wondering whether I considered you part of the problem–that’s assuming of course that you’re not towering mad at me right now and don’t care what I think.
But I’ll say that the overwhelming majority of you aren’t. There are good people here, but you’re drowned out by noise from prolific noisemakers.
At the end of the day, the sad fact is that thanks to a very few this place had become a poor use of my time, and I find now I have time to do other things. Relaxing things, or productive things. I can even read a book!
And I honestly feel the same way I felt when I stopped watching network TV entertainment; like I’ve given up something addictive, time-sucking, and mind-impairing. A sad comment for a site that’s supposed to be about getting people to think. Instead we drown in propaganda brought by our own people, we drown in endless argumentation, and we also risk locking ourselves into a bubble of unreality.
So…to make it plain, I am Out Of Here, not just as an author but as a commenter, and I am sure the celebration by most will be deafening.
I don’t expect I’ll ever be back, and I doubt I will ever be welcome back.

I’m sorry you think this place is a waste of your time. I will miss your logical input and authorship, and I wish you would reconsider. I have always considered you to be a valuable member of this community. I wish you well in whatever you do.

And therein likes one of many reasons why I simply cannot blame Steve for this decision. His time is valuable, what he can do with it is impressive, and it can be used more productively to help “Make America Great Again” in places other than here.
One of the reasons that I retired was simply that I was able to do more for science by helping get Trump elected, than by directly contributing to science in my workplace in “Shallow State”. And I still feel that it was the right decision.
I think this site has merit and utility, and I personally rely on it to understand current events. After spending about half a year working in regional politics (you may remember that, a couple of years ago), I “rediscovered” the importance of this site to my understanding of American politics.
We will have been here for (depending upon when you joined) up to 7 years in November. I think it was time well spent, but I do understand why it might be much less valuable for Steve.
There are many other sites doing what we did here earlier, and I am encouraged by that. I see the entire Substack phenomenon as the next generation, as WordPress blogs go into decline. Seeing sites like Coffee & Covid prosper shows what is possible – but also reminds me of what is not possible here.
Covid almost killed me. I’ve never had the health or energy since COVID, to do what I did when we started this site. I am glad that the sister blogs exist, because one or more of them may very well need to take over, if I can’t keep things up here.
Just trying to get into WordPress programming is a full time job. I can’t even do THAT if I have to construct placeholders 4 days a week.
We can have a talk about the future of this site later. But for now, I will simply wish Steve well, and much winning, in whatever he chooses freely to do. And there will certainly be no hard feelings from me, if he chooses to stop in every once in a while and comment – or also if he doesn’t. In fact, I think most people, if not everybody here, would feel the same. So I feel very OK if he frees himself completely, and finds happiness elsewhere, because IMO happiness is one of the BIG THREE.
Our lives are limited. We have to use them well.

I’ve said this before, and I don’t know if anyone would agree with me, but while I greatly appreciate the time and effort that authors put into their posts, if we need some placeholders that merely have the date and site rules or the like, I would be fine with that. Bells and whistles are nice, but are not necessary if they place a burden on you, Wolf, or anyone else. Just my opinion.
I continue to see this site as a valuable resource for all kinds of information, and one way to be armed for the fight that we are engaged in. Thank you for making it possible.

Wolfie, I read with concern your comment about never regaining your strength and stamina post-Covid. IIRC you got it early on before it mutated significantly, as did I. It has taken me some time to realize the health issues that plagued me after that were compliments of the destruction of my immune system and then that nasty old spike protein doing a number on my heart and kidneys. I bring things to this board that are controversial because we NEED to look at them. Given the censorship and outright lying by our overlords, we really can not say anything is an actual fact. (It is the reason you need OTHER INDEPENDENT labs to rerun experiments and validate the first labs findings.)
However looking at stuff we disagree with is GOOD for us. Many times there is a lot of truth mixed in with the lies. We just have to separate them.
One of the more interesting tells, and the reason I keep notes, is the fact that even the Wayback archives get changed! The fact I will quote a passage and then find that passage is gone or changed a few months later means they ARE watching this site and consider us ‘dangerous.’

Reminds me of the time we celebrated my birthday at Cheli’s Chili Bar, a restaurant owned by Chris Chelios of Detroit Red Wings & Chicago Black Hawks fame. Anyway Mom had made a nice 2 layer cake covered in chocolate icing. It was transported in this covered cake “holder” (neither Hubby nor I can think of a better term LOL) that had a sliding metal latch that that clicked into place. Anyway we were waiting near the entrance, February in Metro Detroit, & the latch must have gotten bumped for suddenly Mom is left holding the lid & the cake is Upside Down on the entryway carpet. So somehow Mom gets that mess up off the floor (the cake was basically intact with a crack in it, iirc) perhaps (hopefully) removing any “shrapnel” that embedded itself in the frosting & proceeded to serve it to us after dinner LOL This explains Something! 😉

Problem is, every “nutrition specialist” I’ve ever encountered just wants people to “eat ze bugs.”
Negative on the bugs.
Before all that wokeness came about, I was also skeptical of nutritionists because they followed outdated food pyramids and didn’t seem to give good advice. I hope the most up-to-date information will be disseminated and that people can learn about what foods contribute to weight gain (which might differ somewhat for different people), what causes hemoglobin a1c levels to rise (leading to diabetes), what effect sugar has on the body and immunity, etc.
Oh, I agree that would be grand — but the “science” of “nutrition” has been so thoroughly skinsuited that they’d be better off with a new name.
While sitting in the doctors office today I watched a blurb about eating fruit & veggies and ‘complex carbs’ aka whole wheat bread. Meat was not mentioned.
Then a bit later they had a blurb on losing weight by counting calories and exercise. — IT DOES NOT WORK because you body adjusts. And of course they then suggest getting help from your doctor.
Many of the info-ads caused a raised eye-brow.
I hope that RFKJ is savvy enough to make sure that good information is provided.
IMO, the best diet book of the dozens I’ve read and tried, is a radical departure from the food pyramid – is good ole Dr. Phil’s book, The Ultimate Weight Loss.
He recommends dividing a plate into quarters (As a Christian, I symbolically make a Cross down the middle). A quarter of the plate and meal should be lean protein, half the plate non-starchy vegetables, and the final quarter, the starch – rice, potato or bread.
While you can’t always do that, Dr. Phil says this should be our most frequent or typical meal and a guide to buffets and potlucks.
I try to cut most of the starches as ’empty calories’ rice is about the only starch I will eat regularly.
My down fall is a sweet tooth esp CHOCOLATE.😍
chocolate is a life saver. when i’m really angry and have that look…hubby offers me a few dark chocolate morsels and boom…his life is saved…lol
seriously, as a diabetic, I still get the cravings for chocolate occasionally, and i find a few morsels of good dark chocolate satisfies that. and without adding them to a cookie i save myself some more carbs and calories.
in my case, if i eat a tiny bit of what i crave, i save myself from eating a lot of other things in it’s place–because the craving isn’t satisfied, so i eat more.

When one goes into the hospital has no diabetics and come out one will. The food is really bad. I barely ate in three days. Breakfast I asks for a boiled egg to avoid the other crap they feed people.

A recent study showed that some overweight (not obesity) is not a bad thing for seniors. Being too thin in the later years may be losing reserves of stamina and strength to fight when injury or illness occurs.
A series of books I want to read talks about strength – “Strong Women Stay Young’ is one title of the series.
I just need the discipline to exercise beyond yard and house work. Staying alive and healthy should be enough motivation.

Yes and if you aren’t eating enough protein the skin can be affected. I learned this from my mother’s situation.
She is super thin, eats very little. Has a large craniotomy incision that opened up as her flesh has melted away and her skin thinned, leading to a skull infection and removal of a portion of the bone.
I am constantly nattering at her about eating enough protein and high quality fats so her incision stays closed. She is non-compliant – insists on drinking skim milk because says she doesn’t want the extra calories. Heavy sigh.
I have always been a carnivore and consider fat a HEALTHY part of my diet. (I do not eat vegetable oil.)
Most people are shocked when they find out I am 75. They think I am 50.
Losing 50 pounds has left me with loose skin but not much in the way of wrinkles.
Covid did the most damage since my lungs are still not as strong as they used to be.

I often think if I lost 10 pounds I could have the body of my youth. But if I did lose that weight I would be too thin. Making mental and physical adjustments for an aging body is key. I’m working on that.

Wifey has made that point for years. As an analytics guy at heart, I have it calculated in my brain to about 10-15% of a fine tuned body weight for the individual subject to individual characteristics and age.
It has to be done on an individual basis. The weight/body fat type charts are BS. The food pyramid we were taught is garbage. Individual body configurations such as skeletal, head size, body length/width, muscle, genetics, physical ability to exercise, present and past chronic issues, etc. have to be considered. Once there is a good handle on all that, then build the nutritional model for the individual person. No way can any of that be done like a widget on the assembly line as the medical community delivers it.
For example, very few in the medical community consider issues such as sensory problems. Aversion to eating, avoidance of foods that psychologically set off anxiety attacks, textures of foods, unknown allergies and so on. We have lived with that one with Grandson #1 for eleven of his twelve years. That dictates what a person is willing or can eat safely in their minds. Some get hooked on the empty calories of junk food, chocolates and sweets, processed foods, etc. as a result. Some can never eat a variety of foods, only the same things all of the time.
I LOVE the approach RFKJr is taking. It is a long term fix is a long term problem.
I think it’s good to have a bit of padding as you age – women especially – in case of a fall to protect brittle bones from a break.
Padding comes in handy in a fall for sure – I fell on some icy stairs a year or so ago – fortunately it was my soft padded bottom that got the impact – but it made a bruise the size and color of a karate black belt across one side. I can still feel the ridge where the gluteus maximus was hit. Ruined my swimsuit modeling career. :8-(

#1. Some think that in some cases the bone breaks and THEN people fall.
#2. One of the first articles in Equus Mag back in the 1970s pointed to a study showing women lose calcium if they remain in bed for 24 hours! Exercise such as walking is CRITICAL for keeping your bones strong. (It is why I trained my 2 year olds to drive in harness and drove them for a couple of years before I trained them to saddle. It develops nice strong bones without stressing the joints.)
I think many broken hips break before the fall happens.
Just recently, a friend’s grandmother stepped out of the passenger side of the car and fell immediately to the ground. Broke her hip, they said. But it had to be broken before she stood up, because my friend, who was driving, watched her try to stand, and then just collapse.
That is why diet and exercise are so so important! Esp for women.
City living esp in our crime ridden cities must be taking a massive toll on older folks brcause they just do not get the exercise they need.

If you get a simple stomach bug or food poisoning when you are older, if you have some weight on you it will be less of a trauma to drop ten pounds. If you are skinny to begin with, you are going to suffer.

Sadly, a large part of the problem now IS the food. And not just the hyper-processed kind.
Because of depleted soils and chemical pesticides and fertilizers, even organic vegetables from the grocery store don’t contain all the vitamins and minerals we need. It’s terrible.
Somehow we need to return to more sustainable agricultural practices, while still managing to feed everybody. There are some fairly large outfits doing it, but it will take some time to scale it up, if it can even be done.
This is a complicated problem. I solve it by taking care of my soil and growing a lot of my own food. But I get that not everybody can.
WORSE it was DELIBERATE. Nicole Johnson does an excellent job of documenting how our farms were destroyed.

I remember back in the 50s and 60s farms were ‘well rounded’ They had animals and birs AND veggies and fruit. Manure was recycled back into the soil and if a field was doing poorly, it was fenced and the cattle and sheep and pigs were run on that field until the soil rebuilt.
In 1945 the state soil survey showed my farm had 2 feet of rich top soil. It was tobacco & corn farmed until I bought it. My first soil sampling showed 98% CLAY, no organic matter at all! (That is why it was sold)
Unfortunately ‘mining the soil’ is now the rule and not the exception.

I’m 2-1/2 minutes in, and two things occur to me.
Why is the mother taking the lead? Where is the FATHER?
And second, what’s with the piano? Is it some kind of emotional dog-whistle to faggots, or what? Stop it already. It’s suffocating. It’s giving me a headache. Not everything needs to be an emotional evisceration. Where is the straight talk and reality, sans theme music?
I have no idea why this should be portrayed as some act of ‘bravery’, that just makes it ten times harder for other people to do the normal thing, which is to shut this crap down before the train ever leaves the station.

Can you even imagine saying something like that to the father of some boy? I can’t, not unless I was well armed, or I was in a room full of police. A person should be wary about doing something like that. The fact that they aren’t means something very serious has gone missing in society.
And I think that ‘missing thing’ is the threat of real violence for wrongdoing. The ‘thing’ which forces people to THINK first, before they do or say something — because they know from experience the consequences will be both immediate and severe.

I agree 100% with the concept that iron sharpens iron. Sometimes I’m the blade, and sometimes, the whet stone. And that’s how I like it.
Everyone here is an Archetype for a larger group of people out in the “real world.” That is how I see it. In many ways, Steve was/is the archetypal atheist. My interactions with him about my belief, and his non-belief, in God sharpened my iron out here in reality.
Similarly, my interactions with some here about Epstein and what I think is true about him and others around him focused my thoughts, caused me to research and think, and clarified some ideas I have about what is actually possible in the world we currently live in. I adjusted my expectations downward quite a bit after that episode.
I will further say that, if you are so focused on interactions here that leaving them feels like leaving an addiction, you are obsessed to a degree I don’t experience, and probably should quit cold turkey.
I love you guys, and wouldn’t be the same person without the interactions I have had on this site, but I read in the morning and check in at night to see what might be happening. Once in a while, maybe I stop in midday while I eat lunch. The rest of the time, I forget all about y’all! No offense meant; I just have a very “real,” not online, life.

Oh, and … *waves hi* … I’m back (logged in) after a bit over a week of wrangling with Ubuntu 24.04.03 upgrades and a total rebuild on top of it for my new daily driver computer. As usual, migrating the Thunderbird profile refused to go smoothly. And there was a fun 2 day delay sussing out how to get the kernel to load a useful display driver during boot so I could see the initial drive decryption password prompt. Yes, I could just type blind to get in (which was useful), but it shouldn’t have to be that way. If I would just use newer computer hardware, that would not have been a problem. And I actually love a good puzzle so it wasn’t all that bad.
Noble Numbat does seem to be a bit of a pain.
Newest versions of two of the software packages I use now come in different flavors: deb, flatpak, or snap. But they were not equally functional. Eventually snap (which the App Center seems to favor) turned out to be the most problematic and I had to uninstall thunderbird (loaded as a snap program) and reinstall as a deb so I could get the versions to match on the old and the new machines during the migration.
I have a specific computer, about the size of a deck of cards, that I use exclusively for online banking. I use the flatpak version of Firefox as its browser and it works fine……
But back on this computer, where I have 1200 tabs in six Firefox windows, I use a hardened version of the deb Firefox. I just glued my previous Firefox cache onto the new release’s Firefox, and everything settled in pretty well.
Sadly my white trash self has to “correct” “Noble Numbat” to Noble Numbnuts!

I’m not suggesting evil only comes from demons. We are humans. We have original sin. We’re selfish, self-absorbed and narcissistic. All of us are, to varying degrees. Those traits are what drive 99% of what we call “evil.”
But then there is a whole other level of evil.
During my 1L summer of law school, I interned at a Public Defender’s Office. We had to defend a serial rapist who had been raping women in parks and running trails. I sat in the jail with this guy as we talked to him. He had a quality of evil I have never seen before. His eyes were not human. They were something else. He was either a demon, or was demon possessed. The kindest thing we could have done to this man was shoot him dead.
I’ve been to war. I’ve been shot at. I’ve seen people die in horrible ways. I’ve lived all over the world and seen many things.
NOTHING in my entire life ever scared me as much as the eyes of that man.

Back when I used to work at a place that did telecom gear, we’d go around and around on signal-to-noise in dB. There was one thing, however, that was really easy to remember — if you had two good links — like 65 dB — back-to-back…..the end-to-end number would be 3dB worse (like 62 dB).
It turns out that this is a bit complex mathematically, and I wouldn’t dare to come up with a spec for a 63 dB link back-to-back with a 65 dB link, but if you doubled the links you’d take a 3 dB hit. This also made intuitive sense in that your signal would get some noise in the first link, then more noise in the second, and end up with double the noise — or 3 dB.

My son, who is very smart, believes that AI will destroy the internet as we know it. That it will become small, area-specific networks rather than a global system.
I guess we’ll see.
That theory is sort of how I see AI. It’s purpose is to first gather intel from everyday internet use Then isolate the targets. Maybe some like the funny memes, some like the quick whittled down information synopsis, some like making friends with it ,maybe even those that use internet for Bible passages or schoolwork, whatever.
It can take the daily vast volumne of internet requests and classify them into to areas of interest. Then AI creators can hone in and become all things to all users.

Good morning, C&C, it’s Saturday! The gusher of news slowed a tiny bit yesterday, allowing us time to catch up on some great sleeper stories. The Weekend Edition roundup —August’s last— includes: corporate media sneers at Kennedy’s new acting CDC director and continues crying, for the fourth day, about agency reorganization; a provocative suggestion for the nation’s top governor; Trump nixes Kamala’s overextended secret service detail and progressives melt down; and a quiet revolution in Florida schools paves the way.
Since I read this post from our Rocky Mountain [former] member, I’ve agonized over whether to make this comment.
Regretfully, I have too much experience in this area. Dealing with the debris caused by such a selfish act. But the nagging at my brain became too annoying. Some here might disagree but my first person experience convinces me that I’m right.

I understand your concern, and I think it is well-meaning and justified, but from my perspective as the “wrangler of authors”, I respectfully disagree.
I think Steve has been rightfully frustrated, in part by my inaction, and that frustration has led to realization, understanding, and liberation – and that is a good thing.
I keep several fires burning and learning around people very unlike those of us here – and that includes multiple places in the arts and sciences. Crazy art people. Rabid evolutionists. Literal communists. This diversity of thought keeps me sane. Most of all, it shows me how much I need what we have here – despite any and all frustrations. There is a lot of craziness out there. Much of it seems innocent, but down under there is some very bad crazy. For me, this is a refuge of sanity. But if it is not that for Steve, who am I to argue?
This is why I think he should feel free to visit here if he ever so desires. Retiring from authorship, or maybe just dailies, may be the best prescription. At that point, he never has to put up with any crap.
There is no perfect community, but this one is, IMO, blessed by God because we are free to praise him here at any time – or even to not do so, which is part of His plan.

I also have a whole lot of experience in this area. I feel your pain. I had an ex-husband who did it, and the fallout continues almost 40 years later. I also had others in my life who left by their own hand. You are right; it is a very, very selfish act.
Since I have lived through it, I can say this; when something like that is a part of your life, it can cause you to look at things through a lens of self-defense. Against the hurt, against the pain, against the fallout.
But I personally think Steve is probably fine.
I’m quite sure I pushed his buttons sometimes, often over the subject of the existence of God. And I think the Epstein episode was the last time I hit a trigger. I still maintain the same stance I did then, however. I think some very powerful people got away with some very terrible things. I have accepted that that is the world we currently live in, though it sucks.

Famed sheriff Buford Pusser who inspired Hollywood’s ‘Walking Tall’ actually murdered his wife, investigators now say
A late Tennessee sheriff who inspired a Hollywood movie about a law enforcement officer who took on organized crime killed his wife in 1967 and led people to believe she was murdered by his enemies, authorities in Tennessee said Friday.
The finding will likely shock many who grew up as Buford Pusser fans and watched the 1973 “Walking Tall” movie that immortalized him as a tough but fair sheriff with zero tolerance for crime, authorities said.
There is enough evidence that if then-McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser were alive today, prosecutors would present an indictment to the grand jury for the murder of Pauline Mullins Pusser, said Mark Davidson, the district attorney for Tennessee’s 25th judicial district.
Investigators also uncovered signs she suffered from domestic violence.
Prosecutors worked with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which began reexamining decades-old files on Pauline’s death in 2022 as part of its regular review of cold cases, agency director David Rausch said.
Agents found inconsistencies between Buford Pusser’s version of events and the physical evidence, received a tip about a potential murder weapon and exhumed Pauline’s body for an autopsy.
Authorities acknowledged the news may shock many who grew up as Buford Pusser’s fans and watched the 1973 “Walking Tall” movie he inspired or the 2004 remake.
Many officers joined law enforcement because of his story, Davidson said.
The sheriff died in a car crash seven years after his wife’s death.
“This case is not about tearing down a legend. It is about giving dignity and closure to Pauline and her family and ensuring that the truth is not buried with time,” Davidson said at a news conference streamed on Facebook.
The truth matters. Justice matters. Even 58 years later. Pauline deserves both.”
Evidence does not back up sheriff’s story
The case dates to Aug. 12, 1967.
Buford Pusser got a call in the early morning hours about a disturbance.
He reported that his wife volunteered to ride along with him as he responded.
Buford Pusser said that shortly after they passed Hope Methodist Church, a car pulled up and fired several times into the vehicle, killing Pauline and injuring the sheriff.
Buford Pusser spent 18 days in the hospital and required several surgeries to recover.
The case was built largely on his own statement and closed quickly, Rausch said.
During the reexamination of the case, Dr. Michael Revelle, an emergency medicine physical and medical examiner, studied postmortem photographs, crime scene photographs, notes made by the medical examiner at the time and Buford Pusser’s statements and concluded that Pauline was actually more likely that not shot outside the car and then placed inside it.
He found that cranial trauma suffered by Pauline didn’t match crime scene photographs of the car’s interior.
Blood spatter on the hood outside the car contradicted Buford Pusser’s statements.
The gunshot wound on his cheek was in fact a close-contact wound and not one fired from long range, as Buford Pusser described, and was likely self-inflicted, Revelle concluded.
Pauline’s autopsy revealed she had a broken nose that had healed prior to her death.
Davidson said statements from people who were around at the time she died support the conclusion that she was a victim of domestic violence.
Pauline’s younger brother, Griffon Mullins, said the investigation gave him closure.
He said in a recorded video played at the news conference that their other sister died without knowing what happened to Pauline and he is grateful he will die knowing.
“You would fall in love with her because she was a people person. And of course, my family would always go to Pauline if they had an issue or they needed some advice and she was always there for them,” he said.
“She was just a sweet person. I loved her with all my heart.”
Mullins said he knew there was some trouble in Pauline’s marriage, but she wasn’t one to talk about her problems.
For that reason, Mullins said he was “not totally shocked.”

Thanks for this. As a recent fan of “Forensic Files” and other true crime shows, this sounds very typical of cover-ups, and my hat is off to the forensics people who unraveled this one.
The real heroes of law enforcement, IMO, are the anonymous beat detectives, the painstaking CSI folks, and the unknown forensics people. They’re the ones who find the truth, solve the cases, and make things stick.
I am surprised they wanted to redo the case. But being so high profile, perhaps in solving this one they will get funding for the others.
It was a legit cold case! They didn’t have the killer – presumably thought to be a local organized crime hood at the time. When they tried to find that guy using the most modern techniques, they found the real shooter instead. VERY typical of cold cases nowadays.

It’s not something I’ll agonize over but the legend around his law and (dis)order exploits is something that I always admired. It’s hard to let go of a hero and decide he was a bad guy.

For reasons entirely different from his, Steve’s decision very strongly resonated with me. There is no good reason to go into what those different reasons were, and the idea of making an announcement in support of a Grand Exit never seems like a good idea to me.

The site has been (and is) a remarkable achievement. Wolfmoon is a hero and a genius, I have no doubt, but most of all a good man.
Very few were here from the outside world when this site virtually alone, thanks to Wolf and others here, absolutely correctly explained and disclosed the ongoing covid operation from soup to nuts, including medical explanations which required (for me) multiple readings to grasp, but when grasped made astonishingly good sense. I credit this site above all with keeping me and my wife from giving in to the psy-op.
The other strong point of the site was good fellowship, to some limited degree. But good fellowship too often got lost in pointless disputes, some of which arose from an immediate desire to refute as opposed to a desire to understand. I rarely saw iron sharpening iron, if ever. Socratic dialogue was just not a part of the discussions. All part of interacting on the internet, IMO.
I would say from time to time that we would all really like each other a lot if we met in person, and be very surprised at how different we were in person from how we looked in postings.
Thus the value of the fellowship such as it was got outweighed by the inclination to dispute in a non-Socratic way.

Schlicter is one person’s opinion brought here by one commenter, I think. It is a minute piece of the pie here, and no one is looking to Schlichter to define what we are facing. Sometimes he is only good for entertainment value.

There are two very distinct types of water cooling.
Closed-circuit water cooling is a side effect of increased chip density — eventually, there’s not enough air surface to cool the tiny, tiny transistors. It’s the same effect as radiators on cars — when your engine develops enough horsepower, you need to move excess heat away.
Open-circuit water cooling is a shortcut. Mind you, it’s a popular shortcut — nuclear power plants use it, for instance — thus the large cooling towers. But it is inherently wasteful.
Further, in areas reliant on imported or fossil water, it is borderline irresponsible.

It just seems logical that there are other ways to cool computers than using water. Aren’t we more clever than cooling computers using waters that emit steam?
Why not put the computers in space or in caves that start with a temperature of 60 degrees all the time? Maybe we could build data centers on icebergs at the poles.
In our area, St Charles, just outside of St Louis, fended off a data center where residental customers would pay for the development of data center utilities before they go online. That seems obscene. Start with poor designs, take from normal people, and then take all their water over time so we all die without sufficient water and there are no living customers who need a data center.
They just got it put off for a year; however, we also learned today that a mayor’s cousin owns the land that would be purchased for the data center. So much corruption, so little logical design. Pffft. LOL

In the radio discussion, they mentioned that two data centers already exist. I think one is in Michigan and the state law that allowed it let them take water from the great lakes though the state could stop them if they take too much water. This is not a small amount of water.

Many of the Bitcoin miners are using liquid cooling for their mining computers.
Apparently you either cool the mining rigs with water or oil (at least one miner uses oil, so I would guess others do too), or you have to cool the entire facility where the mining rigs are located, such that the air temperature is cold enough to prevent the miners from overheating and shutting down.
It’s likely a lot more costly and inefficient to air cool the entire facility, than it is to submerge the mining rigs in liquid to keep them cool.
Sometimes I get a sore place about lack of creative solutions.

I don’t know how it will work with the data centers, but apparently the Bitcoin miners actually stabilize the grid.
I am not knowledgeable about the details, but apparently electricity use can fluctuate significantly throughout the day and during different seasons (e.g., widespread air conditioner usage on really hot days).
The Bitcoin miners use a lot of electricity so the troughs in electricity use are smoothed out, and when there is peak demand for electricity, the Bitcoin miners turn off some (or sometimes all) of their mining rigs as needed, so there is plenty of electricity for the needs of the population.
That sounds like a thoughtul solution!
The Bitcoin miners were subjected to all kinds of hate from Leftists and global warming religionists, claims that Bitcoin miners were going to boil the oceans and similar nonsense, to scare the public and gin up opposition to Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining.
So the Bitcoin miners looked at all the complaints by the crazies and addressed them one by one, figuring out ways to help the communities where they were located.
I’m sure it didn’t change any Leftist minds, but it made most of their arguments moot.

If you’re in the Triad area of North Carolina, there is a small chain called Biscuitville. They make the biscuits right in front of you with a glass shield during their working hours. Further, part of their schtick is that their ingredients are as wholesome as possible and locally sourced.
If you want to use the same wheat that they do, there’s a thing on their wall that says where they get it….along with their butter, eggs, bacon, ham, and honey.
Highly recommended, though they’re mostly a breakfast place.

True but I have a habit to ignore what people think about me. I go from one extreme to another used to think everything was my fault and now I see different. I think when people are frustrated has nothing to do with us it goes deeper. Sometimes when a person developed acceptance who they are they then develop grace or tolerance for others. I speak from own experience once I accepted who I was with all my faults I accept others with all their faults. I remember there was one person in my life who triggered me until I figured out he reminded me of another person from my childhood who beat me up. Experiences can trigger us sometimes good other times painfully. That is why knowing oneself is important instead focusing on foibles of others..

A detailed secret trade-association memo plotting the removal of US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has leaked. It reads like a coup attempt against regulatory reform—and they are spending millions to make sure Kennedy is out of office by September.
It seems that the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), whose membership includes Pfizer, Merck, Novavax, Vaxcyte, and hundreds of biotech firms that profit from regulatory insulation, has a mole.
When the nation’s leading pharmaceutical trade group convenes a closed-door strategy meeting and openly discusses the need to “go to The Hill and lobby that it is time for RFK Jr. to go,” the issue is no longer health policy—it is democratic integrity.
According to the apparent leaked minutes, verified by the name of the creator of the file, on April 3, 2025, BIO held a “Vaccine Policy Steering Committee” (VPSC) meeting whose internal summary, soon to be publicly available thanks to whistleblowers, reveals a campaign of strategic deception, institutional capture, and psychological warfare and exposes a campaign of institutional deception, investor protection, and coordinated sabotage of the MAHA reform platform.
According to the leaked document, titled “BIO Vaccine Policy Steering Committee – April 3, 2025”, BIO has committed $2 million—half of its cash reserve—to counter what it calls the “threat” posed by Kennedy’s rise. But this is no ordinary PR push. It is a multi-pronged campaign designed to deceive the public, silence dissent, and preserve industry dominance through influence operations masquerading as science.
The Plot Exposed
The document opens with a blunt political calculation: Kennedy’s candidacy threatens investor confidence, regulatory predictability, and the long-term viability of the vaccine business. BIO leadership in the apparent leaked document states plainly: “It is time to go to The Hill and lobby that it is time for RFK Jr to go.”
To achieve this, according to the document, BIO intends to deploy surrogates across the political spectrum, co-opt conservative influencers, and bypass direct engagement with the Kennedy campaign altogether. Among the figures named as potential allies in this covert effort: Dr. Mehmet Oz, former Senator Richard Burr (former Senator NC; Advisor DLA Piper Health Policy Steering Committee), Senator Bill Cassidy (in a section of the document focused on strategic influencer engagement and legislative positioning), and the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). These individuals and institutions, the memo suggests, can provide a veneer of bipartisan legitimacy to BIO’s core aim: neutralize Kennedy without ever addressing the substance of his critique.
Follow the Money
The most revealing detail is that $2 million—precisely half of BIO’s entire $4 million reserve—has been allocated to vaccine communications, specifically a D.C.-area pilot campaign called “Why We Vaccinate.” The purpose is not education, but behavioral influence: to combine “inspire and frighten” tactics in order to manipulate public sentiment and legislative behavior.
Internal documents state clearly that the campaign’s goal is to appeal to the “movable middle” using emotionally charged messaging, capitalizing on fear messaging tied to national security, workforce resilience, and economic productivity.

Not the words of a person who had the intention of learning from others on this site. Why Steve felt it necessary to address QTree members this way, only he knows. But if I felt that nobody gave a shiz about what I had to say I would not be here. I believe that is the case with everybody here.
This is not a workplace, it’s a hangout where we share stuff and enjoy each other’s company. As to the judgment of good people being here, well, that is true. But, what is the definition of good? Mine is a bit different than Steve’s apparently.

I think I know where he’s coming from. I could see it happening in real time. He appears to have a low tolerance for—something. I think I know what it is but I will not name it because I don’t want to speak for him. He also appears to be unwilling to give the benefit of the doubt, or even to overlook people’s foibles and perceived insults. And IMO that is his right. In a just world, and in a real human relationship, it is optimal for people to hear one another, to give validation, and to apologize when warranted. But that doesn’t always happen here, and acknowledging wrongs almost never happens.
This is IMO the best place on the internet, but it is not a little paradise.🌴 Insults and accusations are thrown, and fairly often people who have their own agendas will refuse to listen to logic and reason or provide evidence for their beliefs, which I think is intolerable to Steve. I have personal experience with all of that. And then credit is almost never given when one is proven to be correct.
I know, from things Steve has written before, that those situations were irksome to him, to say the least. Add to that the perceived insults (for want of a better word) that he mentioned in his open, and I guess it all became too much for him.
I have often been astounded at the things that people do not seem to see here and the way some have been treated, with no one appearing to notice or care, while placing the offenders on pedestals. For a while I thought there was a huge blind spot.
That said, I use all of that as a learning experience instead of taking things personally. I find it interesting to observe how people react to things.
For me, the value of this site and of each person’s contributions heavily outweighs all of the above. My impression is that for Steve, that was no longer the case.
Right with ya Tradebait, and agree with Tonawanda’s earlier comment about the dubious value of Grand Exits. If Steve got satisfaction from his critique of participants, good for him. What he expressed was important to him. It did not change my appreciation of everyone here – even on the occasion someone drives me crazy 😄 – or the value of this blog. I wish him well, and would encourage him to participate if or when he feels like doing so.

I rarely read the openers because long reads and multiple varied fonts, italics, bolds, etc. are very hard on my deteriorating eyes. But I mainly scour the comments to keep up with our Treepers.
