Seems like the personal tracking device is a chokepoint, a weak link in the chain. I don’t remember land-lines being vulnerable in any widespread manner.
Even when the electricity went out, it was always the phones that kept working.

Landlines, seemingly always on, surprised me…many decades ago. Cancelled landline 20+ years ago.
Guessing separate power source is key.
Landline, with cord in the wall, has Usually worked during a power outage, but it didn’t last time for some reason. Our wall phone also takes a 9 volt battery for display functions so it’s possible that the battery was low so it didn’t work Then, but it might have been for some other reason (we’ve had that wall phone for many years & it Did work in previous power outages). Remote phones don’t work because the base, which takes plugged in power, isn’t putting out its signal during a power outage, I would guess. Not sure if a charged cell phone would work if the cell towers were down with the power outage. Maybe it depends on the source of one’s cell service?
Fully wired phones, known in the trade as POTS lines (Plain Old Telephone Service) are very robust analog systems. They were frequently manufactured by Western Electric, a subsidiary of AT&T.
The network had batteries throughout that kept it running during power failures — these were in large rectangular boxes mounted on telephone poles. All the actual telephone wires would go from each house to a “Central Office”, which is typically a locked rectangular cabinet about five feet tall, two feet deep, and four feet wide.
With all this copper and batteries, this system is expensive to maintain, so phone companies are constantly looking to replace it with cheaper and less-robust digital systems. If announced to customers at all, this is usually couched in confusing and misleading language.

This demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

My brothers somehow learned the test code that the pay phone repair guy used at the strip mall about a mile from my parents’ house. We used to go up to that shopping center & then my brothers would proceed to use that code to set the bank of phones, strategically placed along that roughly 2 block corridor of stores, to ringing non-stop. I bet they still know that code, just like they both memorized the “unlimited lives” code for the vintage Nintendo “Contra” game that my little brother loaned to the Cottage for decades. Unlimited lives made that cheesy game so much more fun for my brothers & all of our kids over the years!
There is a code to ring back on the phone number you are using. Since we moved constantly when I was young, we’d often find ourselves with an old house and a new house with the same phone number, and we’d use that code to talk to each other while the move was in progress (“this next trip, bring the couch”).
IIRC, you dial the code and hang up, then both sets of phones would ring, and both could pick up and talk like you were in the next room.

I’ve used payphones A Lot over the years. My Hubby’s longtime employer, for 25 years, had an 800# that would let me reach him no matter which building/city he worked in. Alternatively, one of Josiah’s insurances in MI, either Medicaid or Children’s Special Health Care Services, had a dedicated 800# that would forward parental calls that were medically related. Both of those systems only functioned during M-F business hours.
U of Michigan hospitals had Many pay phones located all around the hospital back in the day. No matter which department I was in there was often a bank of pay phones located pretty nearby. Years back there were lots of posted prohibitions on cell phone use in the hospital since they could apparently interfere with some hospital equipment. During Josiah’s 17 hour ER ordeal at the beginning of his Pancreatitis bout this May he had me use his cell phone for communications but I had to make my way near exterior walls to even get a signal then, the ER is on the first basement level there. Once he was in a patient room, near a window, his phone seemed to work OK & no one said there couldn’t be cell usage on the floor, at least not that I ever heard. I presume others with cells had similar service intermittent capabilities so using pay phones for back up communication wasn’t such a priority any more it would seem.
Whenever I was Up North at my parents’ Cottage there were several pay phones that were relatively easy access. One was a couple blocks away by foot in the small resort community along Otsego Lake. Others were located on the edge of properties of several gas stations in town, positioned so you could often even use them while sitting in a car.
Both locations saw me use pay phones numerous times to keep Michael informed about developments with Josiah’s surgeries &/or procedures or family situations when the kids & I were Up North while M was working downstate. Since I had no cell phone these pay phones & accessible 800#s made work day communications quite feasible AND free. This was So Helpful for me over many years!
Well over the last decade or so virtually all the pay phones in the hospital have been removed. The alcoves still exist & as I walk past multiple locations where phones I used many times that are no longer there, except in memory, I often experience a degree of melancholy. Thankfully the “house phone” system of the hospital, staff often use these phones when they get paged, is also available to visitors so I can just call the operator & ask for an outside line & have a call forwarded & I would guess that system Might be available 24/7 since it is still a vital tool for hospital staff. I was on such a house phone while my mom was being pulled off life-support during Josiah’s last hospitalization. Unfortunately for me that particular phone was located in the elevator alcove on J’s hospital floor so my very private pain had a very public exposure, which really compounded the emotional overload then…sigh.
The pay phones in Gaylord, by contrast, are often still in existence. However most of them have been allowed to fall info disrepair so they are nearly useless. The one across the street from the library, that I used to use quite a lot, ended up being pretty wild. I could make the calls but could barely hear Michael because there was an extreme buzz along that line. He could barely hear me so I would be standing there in the sun & basically yelling into the phone to have a modicum of a conversation. It drove him crazy so those conversations were usually quite short & frustrating…but it was better than no contact, at least to me LOL.
I’ve also noticed that the “motorist’s call boxes” that used to have signage along the Interstates have mostly disappeared, or at least the signage has been removed. I guess the state figures that most people have a cell phone so they can make calls in the event of roadside situations. That was always my argument to my hubby when I’d travel solo that “everyone & their dog” (but me & Scott) had a cell phone so if something did happen to me I was sure that some kind soul would stop & allow me to make a brief call using their phone if need be!
I wonder if the phone system changes that you described were a major factor in allowing those public access phones to lapse out of repair & eventually out of service all together.
Another helpful piece of the puzzle is that phone lines attract rodents to gnaw on them, particularly when they’re energized. And the old style required a pair of dedicated wires from the CO to the POTS demarc (where it enters the house and becomes your problem).
Incidentally, that’s why telephone lines once had a zillion color combinations — red with yellow stripes, blue with orange stripes….

I liked having a land line. However, AT&T wanted something like $60/mo for basic service. Then one day it stopped working. I called about getting them to check it out. The person wanted me to go out to the service box, plug in a phone and see if I had dial tone. I had to explain there was no service box, wait for them to use google street view to confirm. But they insisted I needed to buy interior wiring coverage before sending someone out. Why? I asked, I’ve already wired a phone to the two leads on the lightning arrestor block where the line comes into the house. I know it’s not the home wiring. And around and around we went. Eventually I gave up and cancelled the service.
I’ve had a couple of those — “no, it’s on your side of the demarc.”
Before we moved into the house, I pulled most of the 1955 2-wire stuff out and replaced it with CAT 5. That way, even if I’m using one-pair wiring, I have four of them in the cable.
That’s beyond crappy customer service!
I kept my landline also even though people told me it is not necessary. We kept it for emergencies.
We use our landline still & have a bundling discount with the phone & internet provider as a bonus.

For those who, like me, need an easy translation of these events:
This story is a big deal for a few key reasons, explained simply:
First, Andrew Weissmann is a well-known former top prosecutor at the Department of Justice (DOJ). He’s famous (or infamous, depending on your view) for leading parts of the Mueller investigation into Donald Trump back in 2017-2019. Many see him as a key player in what Trump calls the “Russia hoax” or efforts to undermine his presidency. So, anything that puts Weissmann under scrutiny feels like payback or justice to Trump supporters.
Second, this is about possible corruption or a conflict of interest. In 2016, while Weissmann was running the DOJ’s Fraud Section, he oversaw a huge plea deal with Odebrecht, a Brazilian company caught in a massive bribery scandal across multiple countries. The deal was “unusual” because it lumped all the bribes together by country without naming specific victims or projects. That made it harder for people or governments hurt by the bribes (like in Peru) to get their money back through restitution. Normally, these deals spell out details to help victims, as seen in similar cases with other companies.
Why does that matter? The law firm Jenner & Block represented interests that benefited from this vague, company-friendly deal. Shortly after, Weissmann left the DOJ and got hired by that same firm, Jenner & Block, with what might have been a sweet compensation package (including bonuses). It raises questions: Did he go easy on the case to score a high-paying job later? That’s the kind of “revolving door” ethics issue that smells fishy and erodes trust in government.
Third, this probe is happening now under a Trump executive order aimed at investigating “weaponization” of the DOJ—basically, claims that the agency was misused against political enemies. The DOJ just sent a letter demanding Weissmann’s pay records from Jenner & Block, threatening a subpoena if they don’t hand them over by October 7. If evidence shows shady dealings, it could lead to bigger investigations, charges, or reforms. For critics of the old DOJ leadership, it’s like exposing hypocrisy from the same folks who aggressively pursued Trump.
Overall, it’s not just about one guy—it’s a symbol of potential deep-rooted bias and self-dealing in the justice system, which could shake up politics, especially with Trump back in power. If nothing comes of it, skeptics might call it a witch hunt, but either way, it’s fueling debates about fairness in law enforcement.

Very familiar with the Darden business school and their professors back in the day. Absolutely the best bunch of educators I had ever knew personally. But to receive their true value you had to hire them as consultants on their personal time away from the school. In the classes I took in the school’s Executive Series on campus I received good training. However, when you hired them outside is when you really benefitted. All of the restrictions were gone and they could do their thing unfiltered.
I am still grateful for what they shared. It made a huge difference in my career.

This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.
Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.

In para’s defense, it is (IMO, at least) a very good thing to care about the Palestinians, and in particular the Palestinian Muslims. Even the ones who hate Jews and blame them for everything. That is, literally, loving our enemies, and we should not be doing it just because we “have to”, but because it’s the right thing to do, and we should WANT to do it.
That doesn’t mean we (you and I and others) support Hamas, however, and trying to help the Palestinian people without helping, supporting, or aiding and abetting Hamas is extremely difficult.
It’s very helpful to pray for the people of Palestine, because it will give you discernment, and disarm the demon of antisemitism (which I really believe is the work of a particular demon).

I read this teen book once of a fictional dystopian world where no one was allowed to raise any food & everything was controlled by the government. There were small pockets of resistance as people tried to develop degrees of freedom from tyranny. There was a diagram, similar in shape to the one you shared above. This one was for a cyclical plan to get some independent food production going in small ways apart from government prying eyes. I recall that it involved using chickens as part of the cycle. They would use chicken wire to fence off a patch of land & I think initially they would gather plant material, like weeds, & toss it into the fenced in area. After a time there would be sufficient insect presence on the decaying weeds that they would introduce chickens that would eat the insects & leave their droppings. This would fortify the soil enough that it would eventually be ready for planting of seeds that people had saved from some of their limited food sources. I think the diagram was like a hexagon with six stages the last one being crops to harvest from the first patch of land, then the cycle would start all over again. It was a simplistic portrayal but always struck me as a small way that homesteaders, for instance, could systematically prepare their own soils for some successful crop production 🙂

Of course it was. I’m surprised 100% of the town wasn’t living off the free meal for their livestock.
That’s WHY they’re there.
Feed has to be a huge expense. If you can get feed for FREE, then you have a competitive advantage that no one else can match. Whatever you don’t have to spend on feed goes straight to your bottom line and in your pocket.
So of course all of the farms in the area do what is most profitable, running livestock operations without any feed expense. Who wouldn’t?!? 😂
Why did this situation happen in the first place? Why wasn’t Jack Daniels SELLING their leftover mash to local farmers, instead of GIVING it away?
The “free lunch” — which should never have existed in the real world in the first place — was the original problem, the distortion to reality, that created this whole situation.
Now Jack has gone WOKE, converted to the pagan globull warming religion, adopted the ‘sustainability’ nonsense language, and interrupted the free lunch the locals were getting.
Based solely on the report above, it looks like nobody is in the right here.

Incidentally, the process is similar to making beer, then distilling it. The “mash” is from the early stages that are most similar to brewing. Because the yeastie-beasties ferment sugars to alcohol, the leftover mash is high in protein and fiber. Ruminants (those that chew cud) can break down the fiber.
‘Distillers Grains’ is often used in pelleted animal feed.
Except in this case, the ‘waste’ from the distillery was obviously a resource with value to someone else, and should have been sold accordingly.
Value for value is how everything works in this world.
When an anomaly is introduced, like ‘value for free‘, it creates distortions, dependencies, attracts larger and larger numbers of people to it as word spreads, which always creates problems.
Like all the ‘value’ America offers for ‘free’ to the entire population of planet earth, if they just invade our border and vote democrat.
In many cases, the cost to haul away is roughly equivalent to the value to the right person.
In many other cases, the cost to process something in order for it to have value is more than people want to spend to purchase it.

If you need 400,000 lbs. of feed, that’s a quarter million dollars in the form of a ‘free’ farm subsidy.
Every livestock farmer in the country would want to relocate there, no different than a Bitcoin miner or a new A.I. data center looking for free electric power.

If there is so much value in the distillery waste that it became the ‘backbone‘ (their word, not mine!) of the livestock farms all around the distillery, that’s not a happy accident — that’s market forces at work.
My dad’s cousin ran an intermittently successful farm North of Traverse City, MI, in the heart of cherry country. They pretty much always survived barely on a shoestring. For a while, in addition to cherries, he raised beef. He had some type of deal with a local dairy farm where he could get any male calves, as the farmer bred his milk cows for more milk cows, that he could raise for meat. This was hit or miss successful, depending on the price of beef at slaughter time, & the cost of feed was a huge factor.
Later the cousin switched to pork, which was way more economical to raise. They didn’t take as long to raise before they were ready to market, & because they could eat virtually anything (& cousin developed a number of free sources of pig food) you could wait to slaughter them for when market conditions were good.
Dad said that Kenny, who was a chef by training, ended up working in some local restaurants for a season to supplement his income. He drove his pick up into town on his work days, the bed loaded with whatever fresh produce his own property was producing at the time. He’d sell this produce to his employer & use it on those workdays to create his amazing menus at the upscale restaurant(s?) where he worked. At the end of the work day he’d make the rounds to various businesses where he had arrangements to cart off their unwanted foodstuffs which he’d use to feed his pigs. This included old bread stuffs, donuts, dough, stale bread, & presumably any flour that had insect infestation. He may have also had a system to get the plate scrapings & food scraps of the restaurant where he worked. Dad made it sound like he had several sources for what was basically bio-garbage that other businesses would otherwise put into their trash. He probably saved them either the costs or the hassles of managing the food garbage & they saved him the cost of buying food for his pigs. This was a big win-win & it grew out of personal relationships & smallish town business sense.
When my Ex was a basic training officer, the Army at Ft Jackson would give the food scraps to the local pig farmers. It was cooked to sterilize it and then fed to the pigs.
Then some Ass in the USDA decided table scraps were ‘DANGEROUS’ when fed to pigs, so instead of getting recycled into bacon, table scraps went to the land fill.
Translation: ‘DANGEROUS’ when fed to pigs = couldn’t get graft from.

Ah, that looks to be the core of the thing. They’re building a facility on the JD site to convert distillers’ grains into pseudo-natural-gas that they can pump in their natural gas pipeline systems. This will likely cost more than pumping natural gas out of the ground but get them hugs and kisses from the enviroweenie crowd.

My first reaction upon reading that list, is that they are burning up our children’s future.

Unfortunately it is full of the usual lies like:

Well no that is not quite true. I “built” 4 inches of topsoil on my farm in sixteen years by turning worn out cropland into grazed pasture. (original soil tests showed 1% organic matter in first 6 inches)
There is another readily available source for Coal co‐firing that is not discussed above since at this time it is not an “acceptable” source to the general public. That source is distillers’ grains.
If cows and other livestock become uneconomical to raise, the bio-fuel byproducts will lose their use as livestock feed and become available for generating electricity.

Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.
The armed woman was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online ‘Hey to all my gang let’s fuck those mother fuckers up, don’t let them take anyone.’
Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured in this attack.
Pritzker’s Chicago Police Department is leaving the shooting scene and refuses to assist us in securing the area. There is a growing crowd and we are deploying special operations to control the scene.

Another data point on the Charlie Kirk shooting. Using this post by Brandon Tatum whom I stopped listening to during the Uvalde School shooting as he always played the “nothing to see here” roll. And as you can see in the comments few are buying his BS.
It’s not a data point unless data is clear. It is not, at least in the first few minutes of that that I watched. They take a video whose circumstances are not clear and make definitive conclusions about it: “No one was treating Charlie Kirk. No one was trying to stop the bleeding.”
For all we know, the men in that video were not even touching Kirk, who was not visible in the video, nor was it clear who else might have been there and possibly closer to him, administering to him. It’s also possible that Kirk had already been taken away.
I will not take the word of anyone about what a video is supposedly showing when I can’t see whether what they allege is actually happening.
I had read before that there was video showing a lot of blood, but I haven’t seen it.

This is so wearisome. So what are they alleging now? Clearly there was a lot of blood, but *they* are saying no one who supposedly administered to Kirk had any blood on them. So what are the conspiracy porn aficionados concluding from that?

The conspiracy porn aficionados are doing their job given investigators are not providing a clear picture of events and what can be pieced together by the public doesn’t make sense. Meanwhile delay in giving a clear picture of what happened only fuels the conspiracy. Want to blame someone blame the investigators. Kirk hadn’t been taken away as the men just jumped the table. However there seems to have been a man with dark hair and glasses, Filipino looking that was bent at the edge of the table looking like he might move toward Kirk.
Later another man looking like him is seen with blood on his hands but this is when the decoy who looses his pants is being escorted to a police car and the Filipino type with blood on his hands is walking with that group.
I don’t have a time line of how long after Kirk was shot and the guy declared he shot Kirk. Kirk wasn’t behind the table more than a minute or two, so if the guy who declared he shot Kirk happened say 2 to 3 minutes or more after Kirk was shot, then it could be the same guy.
I’d fetch the vid of that, but I’m done searching for the night. Still thinks what happened in the Alex Jones vid was odd. And yeah, it still a data point that needs to be resolved before dismissed. Not dismissed before resolved. People mention the camera video behind Kirk needs to be released but I seriously doubt it would of been pointed below the table. Still needs to be released to resolve the issue of the existence of an exit wound or possibly a neck entrance wound. Everything is still clear as mud.
I disagree. Anything that someone comes up with that doesn’t actually show what they say it shows is not a data point. If they can show time stamps that match the time stamps of where Kirk was and when, then it MIGHT be a data point, but even then, it is meaningless, IMO, unless someone finds out who all of those people are, what they were doing, and why. Also, there are people who will doctor videos just to keep a conspiracy going, for any number of reasons. Until definitive evidence is presented, this kind of thing only raises questions that are most likely unnecessary.
Given that you think this is significant, what is the theory that evolves from it? Kirk was shot and bloody, but no one supposedly tending to him had blood on their hands. And…?
Well, The Fiancee is off to bed. She’s getting up at something like 3:30 to go to SJC to fly off to Houston at 7:00.
