I always wondered about welding doors shut.
What do they do about the windows? They would have to board up the windows too, at least on the first two or three floors.
How do you board up the windows in such a way that the people inside can’t cut through the boards or just beat on them, using furniture as a battering ram, to bust through them?

Assuming the doors are made of metal, no sense in trying to break the weld. But that drywall on both sides of the door should take about less than a minute to bust through… 😁

What would you do, just knowing the proclivities of the tyrants, without even knowing their true and full capabilities?
These are a few things that come to mind:
1) declare the convoy as a ‘blockade of the Capital’
2) declare the members of the convoy ‘domestic terrorists’ for purposes of the deployment of ’emergency powers’
3) using any number of military satellites targeting the D.C. beltway, electronically identify and tag / mark each truck and track it. Any truck that makes a full circuit is clearly a member of the convoy and subject to ’emergency powers’
4) identify the owner of each truck based on license plate
5) if license plates can’t be read by satellite, they can be read by a state trooper with a camera photographing every single member of the convoy as they drive by, and then cross-reference those license plates with registration data
6) issue domestic terrorist arrest warrants for every truck driver identified as being a member of the convoy
7) freeze and seize all assets of every convoy member, the full Canada treatment
8) deploy National Guard
9) stop all traffic going around the beltway
10) begin hauling truckers out of their cabs and arresting them, beginning at major access points (off ramps and on ramps)
11) move trucks to the break down lane, in order to get traffic moving again
12) seize, tow and sell all trucks at auction after drivers are arrested. This will take time, but the tyrants don’t care if the breakdown lane is lined with trucks for the next several months as they are methodically removed

I’ve never felt free in my life.
I can’t turn around without being required to obtain some license, or pay some bogus fee, or take some bogus continuing education class, or jump through this hoop, or that hoop, or some other hoop, most of which cost money, and those that don’t (e.g., expecting me to wear a face rag) are intended to dehumanize or cause shame.
I know almost nothing of which Americans nostalgically refer to as ‘freedom’.
It must have disappeared before I was born.
Like something we’ve been told that we have so often that many people believe we have it, even though we don’t.
We don’t even have ‘free’ elections anymore. And probably haven’t, since at least 2008, if not since 1960 (or earlier).
And nobody did a thing about it.
Not even the POTUS, and he had all the evidence to prove it.
Yeah, well, I guess it’s kind of a perspective thing.
I grew up in a family that had money, because my Dad worked so hard to get money. And I viewed his life as a trap, because all he did was work.
Because my Mom worked all the time, too, I was pretty much raised by my Dad’s mother, whom I called “Nannie.” Nannie lived through the Depression. She’d never had anything, but thought nothing of it. She made do, and made a wonderful life for me to enjoy. The best food in the world, and love, all I could ask for.
I grew up more like her than like my Dad and Mom. I’ve never had much materially, but I don’t miss it. I married into fairly extreme wealth once, but it didn’t last. Those people were all miserable, and they made me miserable, too.
There is great freedom in not having a lot. I don’t have a “continuing ed” kind of career. I live in a low income area of the country, in a very old house; I drive a very old car. If I need a license to hunt, oh well, that’s a small thing to me. Who cares?
I never wore a rag on my face, and it only stopped me from going inside my bank (which has a drive-up), and the pet store. When I had to have a mammogram, I did wear a mask the one time in the hospital. But that’s a hospital, and they wanted you to mask in flu season long before Covid.
The election thing I view as pretty much beyond my control. I do as much as I can to advocate and spread the word about it, with the thought that if enough people catch on, we might overwhelm the cheaters to the point that they can’t win. But ultimately, I have my vote. So I don’t let that take away my feeling of freedom.
The biggest reason I feel free, though, is that inside my head, I am exactly who God made, and that is a free being. I have an ongoing, free-wheeling conversation with the Creator about all kinds of things. The beauty of the moon on an icy cold night, a forest path on a summer day, the taste of a freshly picked strawberry that by the miracle of gardening I was able to produce, of course with God’s help. The life inside my head and heart is a freedom that has no equal in the external world. And nobody can take it away.

Sorry you’re in a trough. I’m just emerging (at least I hope I am) from a long one myself. As for the difficulty of believing it is a trough, one wants to be careful about the word ‘believing’. We too often mean by it ‘having confidence or assurance as a psychological state’—as we have about the existence of furniture. But that comes and goes and by no means always accompanies intellectual assent, e.g. in learning to swim you believe, and even know intellectually that water will support you long before you feel any real confidence in the fact. I suppose the perfection of faith would make this confidence invariably proportionate to the assent.
In the meantime, as one has learnt to swim only by acting on the assent in the teeth of all instinctive conviction, so we shall proceed to faith only by acting as if we had it. Adapting a passage in the Imitation one can say ‘What would I do now if I had a full assurance that there was only a temporary trough’, and having got the answer, go and do it. I a man, therefore lazy: you a woman, therefore probably a fidget. So it may be good advice to you (though it would be bad to me) not even to try to do in the trough all you can do on the peak.
I have recently been advised by Fr. Adams to abbreviate a prayer for other people which was becoming so long (as my circle widens) as to be irksome. I have done so, but kept the longer one on two days a week. Result, that having ceased to be the rule and become a kind of extra, it ceases to be irksome and is often a delight. There is danger in making Christianity too much into a ‘Law’. Let yourself off something. Relax.
I know all about the despair of overcoming chronic temptations. It is not serious provided self-offended petulance, annoyance at breaking records, impatience et cetera doesn’t get the upper hand. No amount of falls will really undo us if we keep on picking ourselves up each time. We shall of course be very muddy and tattered children by the time we reach home. But the bathrooms are all ready, the towels put out, and the clean clothes are in the airing cupboard. The only fatal thing is to lose one’s temper and give it up. It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present to us: it is the very sign of His presence.
The question about Sarah is why she wants not to have to ask the good one to make her good. Would it be right (I know so little about children) to point out to her that He likes being asked: and that if she could be good on her own, taking no notice of Him, that itself wouldn’t be good. But ten to one the 2 sticks were primarily a game. . .

Duck Duck seems to act more like Google at times. Clearly compromised. I think they are all to some degree or another or eventually slip that way and thus there’s a need to have a variety of search engines. Yahoo search often comes up with things I can’t find on Duck Duck. Swiss Cow still seems good, but of late I’ve begun to wonder, Ecosia, yandex, mogeek, bing and startpage I have, but don’t use them often enough to form an opinion. Since there hundreds of them, best thing to do is do a search for top fifty or so and see what they are saying. One thing I hate about Duck Duck is the search exhausts itself very early when you know there should be much more. One thing I love about my web browser (Vivaldi) is it lets me have as many search engines as I want. One main one for whatever I designate my primary search engine, and then a separate search area off to the side that will give me a cascade of all the search engines I entered code for.
Little by little they are narrowing our world.

Every criminal government that has tried to ban Bitcoin has only made people want and value Bitcoin more. Because they can’t ban Bitcoin without exposing that their own currency is just a power/control scheme designed to transfer wealth from the poor to the rich via extremely intentional inflation.
The more people who realize that and wake up, the more people seek for a safer alternative, and that’s when they find… Bitcoin 😁
If they come up with a scheme that just makes cryptos too hard to use, people will leave the BRoA (Banana Republic of Amerika) for more friendly jurisdictions, and take all of their wealth with them.

The calls for the leaders’ deaths will be allowed unless they contain other targets or have two indicators of credibility, such as the location or method, one email said, in a recent change to the company’s rules on violence and incitement.
The temporary policy changes on calls for violence to Russian soldiers apply to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Ukraine, according to one email.
In the email recently sent to moderators, Meta highlighted a change in its hate speech policy pertaining both to Russian soldiers and to Russians in the context of the invasion.
“We are issuing a spirit-of-the-policy allowance to allow T1 violent speech that would otherwise be removed under the Hate Speech policy when: (a) targeting Russian soldiers, EXCEPT prisoners of war, or (b) targeting Russians where it’s clear that the context is the Russian invasion of Ukraine (e.g., content mentions the invasion, self-defense, etc.),” it said in the email.
“We are doing this because we have observed that in this specific context, ‘Russian soldiers’ is being used as a proxy for the Russian military. The Hate Speech policy continues to prohibit attacks on Russians,” the email stated.
Last week, Russia said it was banning Facebook in the country in response to what it said were restrictions of access to Russian media on the platform. Moscow has cracked down on tech companies, including Twitter (TWTR.N), which said it is restricted in the country, during its invasion of Ukraine, which it calls a “special operation.”
Many major social media platforms have announced new content restrictions around the conflict, including blocking Russian state media RT and Sputnik in Europe, and have demonstrated carve-outs in some of their policies during the war.
Emails also showed that Meta would allow praise of the right-wing Azov battalion, which is normally prohibited, in a change first reported by The Intercept.
Meta spokesman Joe Osborne previously said the company was “for the time being, making a narrow exception for praise of the Azov Regiment strictly in the context of defending Ukraine, or in their role as part of the Ukraine National Guard.”

I’m watching the judge’s remarks before sentencing. They’re 🔥. The judge isn’t yelling, just spelling out truths about the crime. Smollett has to sit and quietly listen to him say that no one has damaged him more than he has himself. Also, how it’s unbelievable that Smollett, who champions social justice, is guilty of such a crime. How Smollett has greatly damaged true victims of hate crime. Premeditation – it was not a crime of impulse or opportunity.
The judge gave Smollett the opportunity to make a statement. That would have been the appropriate time to express remorse, but his attorney advised him not to speak because they will be appealing. I don’t know if the sentence will be imposed immediately. His refusal to speak didn’t look good IMO.

It was fascinating to see him get chastised like that. He was sitting between a man and a woman attorney. The woman looked like she was about to cry during the judge’s remarks. They both looked very uncomfortable. Smollett sat completely upright, looking straight at the judge, with his hands folded on the table.
The judge said his very name has become synonymous with lying. He is the butt of jokes by comedians, and he brought it all upon himself.
He was convicted of a class 4 felony, which is the lowest class. The sentence for that is presumptively probation, but the judge took other “real serious aggravating factors” into conisderation: premeditation, the pain caused to real victims of hate crimes, the damage done to the city of Chicago, and above all, his performance on the witness stand, which was hour upon hour of “pure perjury.”
Smollett will spend the first 150 days of sentince in Cook County jail, starting NOW.
EDIT: Continued. Smollett can appeal the sentence within 30 days. Does Smollett have anything to say? He removed his mask and said he was not suicidal. He repeated it several times, getting louder each time. Then, “I am innocent, and I am not suicidal.” He kept saying it while saying he respected the judge’s decision. He’s angry and appears to be throwing a tantrum because he has to go to jail.

An attorney asked the judge to suspend the jail sentence in light of the notice of appeal. “Respectively denied.” Would the judge stay it? “No. The wheels of justice turn slowly. Sometimes the hammer of justice has to fall, and it’s falling right here, right now. I’m not staying this.”
Ohmygosh! Smollett gets ushered out of the courtoom, and he raises his fist and again yells, “I am not suicidal and I’m innocent! I could have said that I was guilty a long time ago.” Right, because you are. What a dumb thing to say.
It was sooooooo satisfying to see justice being done. It’s way too rare these days. 🍿

My wife, a flight attendant, always tries to work out what side of the political fence her crew mates are on. Then she knows how to deal with them. When in doubt she assumes they are a lib. Then she adjusts what she says and does accordingly. And as usual, it is always the libs that will toss passengers and make mountains out of mole hills. Because they can.
So if you need to fly, I would not recommend deciding you want to make a push for your first amendment rights. And sitting there smuggly with your mask down is not going to gain you any friends either. That is probably going to get him a $10,000 fine also. Once on the airplane you lose a who bunch of rights mainly due to safety. Not following flight attendant instructions is one way to get tossed in a hurry.

But, most CA’s won’t tolerate their crew playing political police, which is not a job function of the crew. And I include that little tidbit in my crew brief when I lay down the laws of the trip or leg.
Don’t mess with senior CA’s, esp. those who have a leadership position in the union. If your wife knows anything, she knows that.
What if you want to go overseas and can’t afford the time to take a boat?

At this point, I am not flying anywhere. Prolly have ~two million actual miles, over ~45 years. Frequent flier miles not included.
Sure, my mile numbers pale compared to many. Certainly air crew, have truly crazy high mile numbers. Doesn’t matter to my point.
I have seen the quality of air travel deteriorate over the years.
Can’t imagine flying domestic again, ever. Too much stoopidity with the airlines, TSA, terminals in general, end-to-end inconvenience, etc. Including prior to Covidiocy days. If I need to travel in the states, my Ram is at the ready.
IF I were to fly again, it would only be a direct flight to Philippines. Philippine Airlines (PAL), Business only. PAL truly a quality, customer service experience. Assuming Covidiocy BS IS gone.
PAL service has to return to “normal” – pre-Covid. Yea, won’t happen anytime soon.
I like to joke that I only fly because:
1) I get paid a lot of money to do it
2) I have the “Ultra” of first class seats
3) when I press the FA call button I get an immediate response and whatever I want
4) I have a locked, ballistic door between me and whatever happens behind me if SHTF, and
5) by FAA and gov’t regulation MY word is law on board.
And not necessarily in that order.
But I’m only partially joking. 😉
When the mask BS goes away, I will fly again. And I may have to coming up here. My mother can no longer handle my one nephew by herself.

According to Oxitec, its “sustainable and targeted biological pest control technology does not harm beneficial insects like bees and butterflies and is proven to control the disease-transmitting Aedes aegypti mosquito, which has invaded communities in Florida, California, and other U.S. states.”
Since it was first detected in California in 2013, the Aedes aegypti mosquito has spread rapidly to more than 20 counties throughout the state, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases being transmitted to humans.
Oxitec’s new technology consists of genetically-modified male mosquitoes, which do not bite, that will be released into the wild where they are expected to mate with females, which do bite.”

Bats are awesome. Dragonflys eat them nonstop too. Anything like this deserves extra scrutiny esp with gates attached.
In the last few years, bats have moved in around here. I have no idea why, but we now have bats, hawks, great big owls (the Couch Commando saw a great horned owl this evening in a neighbor’s tree), and more. I will say mosquitoes are still an issue, but not as bad some years as they used to be.
