Today’s opener is primary about two children, grandsons #1 and #2. Updates on both follow. Granddaughter – #3 grandchild – is perfect of course. She is two years old going on fourteen and thoroughly attacking the terrible twos in the most bossy way possible. Any references to mamaw and her mom along with apples and trees do not usually end well.

Grandson #2
Starting with #2: There are no lingering issues after having his leg run over by his dad with the family car at the drop zone at school a year ago (#2’s fault – see ADHD that follows). Dad even got over his fear and will drop and pick him up occasionally. 😂
Per his pediatrician #2’s leg is perfectly fine – a God miracle. The growth plate seems unaffected. Along the way ADHD has been diagnosed by the pediatrician for some time. It has been obvious to our entire family as well. He does well in his academics, yet, struggles to stay focused while being somewhat disruptive and getting in mild trouble along with his buds at times. Very recently he was diagnosed with mild to moderate food allergies – wheat and dairy primarily – as well as excessive glucose readings for his age. It also added to some restless legs and poor sleep. In short, his nutrition sucked, which further fed the ADHD. Mom and Dad realize they were too easy on it and have to do better as they rebuild his diet and more disciplined eating patterns.
He is in the 97th percentile on height and 85th on weight. Big dude for his age and very strong. Since he is only 9 years old, his reboot should not be a major challenge. He wants to play middle school football next season, so he knows he has to get his act together. He is the type child that if you explain why he needs to change or do something he accepts it readily and does his best. His parents must cooperate and remove as many temptations as possible, which they are committed to doing.
Intuniv (Guanfacine), a mild non-stimulant med has been prescribed for the ADHD and so far the results have been good. It is mild and acts purely as an enhancement for focus while taking out some of the excess motion. The teachers have all raved at how he has responded in class and with the other kids now with no disturbances and great focus. We have also noticed a return to his creative artist side at home, which has been welcome. We will continue to monitor closely along with follow up blood labs to see how the med and the reworked nutrition does with his system. The Intuniv use will be as short termed as possible, especially if the revised nutrition works well as he goes through puberty.
Grandson #1
The results for 6th grade with the Miacademy homeschooling curriculum are in. Grandson #1 blew through it with flying colors. Four A’s and one B. He also had an A in one course with the previous Time 4 Learning curriculum we left. Once again, science was his B (Earth Science). Language Arts, Math, American History, Biblical Studies and Life Skills (Typing) were the A’s. We are going to switch with his parents taking World History and me taking on Science this next school year. We want to see if a different voice and orientation toward science can help him excel like he is doing in the other courses.
That said, for the past two months he frequently completed the course videos, lesson questions, quizzes and final tests unassisted. We made ourselves available for any questions about the work, but for the most part left the room for him to figuratively go to school. His average time range spent per day was 3-3.5 hours. The exception was his parents providing assistance conducting experiments in the science course. He took short breaks in between segments to get a snack, something to drink or go to the bathroom. To see his confidence grow has been priceless.
His parents and I monitor the course content from the parent’s portal. We know in advance what he will be studying. It is no wonder so many who use this curriculum go on to college. It is thorough and well taught by interesting teachers in videos that generally last ten minutes per segment on average. The method and presentations keep the attention of the student.
Following each video the student goes through an extensive series of questions about the presented material that are in multiple choice or fill in the blank form. Students are not allowed to proceed with wrong answers. For every wrong answer the lesson segment adds two more related questions until all are answered correctly. If needed, the student can go back and rewatch the teaching video, consult PDF’s, and restart the lesson questions. After watching the video and completing the lesson questions; a quiz is given that counts for their score in that particular subject matter’s segment. There may be as little as four segments to as many as a dozen segments per chapter in each subject. There may be as little as five chapters for an elective course or more than a dozen for core subject courses. All subjects have additional PDF provided material in each segment that can be printed that supports and even goes beyond the video content should a more in-depth look be desired. In several subjects I found the PDF’s to be very helpful for better comprehension.
The curriculum’s emphasis is the opposite of many public schools today. The schools tend to teach for students to test well and are losing their minds over state required student assessment test requirements. This curriculum teaches for the students to simply learn well. As a result their students also test well. With less distractions than in a normal school environment, the student learns more in a shorter period of time because they remain focused on the material and not on what may be going on around them. Student social interactions can be provided through local homeschool support groups as desired.
There is some flexibility with selecting subjects. There are at least a half dozen electives for each grade level. Students can accelerate into higher grade level core subjects if desired. For example, #1 loves American History and we wanted to strike while the iron was hot. With this curriculum that course is a 7th – 8th grade subject. He took it anyway and aced it. He will take the normal 6th – 7th grade subject of World History as a 7th grader. There are a few choices for each grade level even within core subjects.
To complete the balance of his 180 school days to meet the state requirement, he is doing an outside subject of cursive writing, continuing music (vocal) lessons, library time, field trips, golf, tennis, etc. Since he started this school year in late July of 2025, there are not many days left to finish it anyway as he worked on subjects during Christmas break when he had nothing else to do. That’s flexibility. No matter where you are and what day of the week it is, you can have school if you have a computer and internet access.
The primary caution for parents with any curriculum that is selected is to monitor for objectionable content. Each have their own methods, so parents can choose the curriculum that best suits the child. Below is a reminder of what parents must navigate for their children both in schools and even in some homeschool curriculums.
It was the school provided language arts Taylor Swift dream story trans images that ignited our rapid departure from 4th grade public school with #1. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
A handful are much easier on subject matter content, which fits academically challenged kids. However, most users prefer academically challenging subjects that have ample content. We found this with Miacademy with the bonus of them using teaching methods that work well for #1 and many kids. We found a couple of narratives and woke type lessons that we addressed with him as they happened. There were not nearly as many or as obnoxious as Time 4 Learning, which is the largest curriculum provider in the nation that we used previously. They have also begun using AI totally for grading purposes. It was a nightmare with the written responses to questions for many students and parents alike. That ended for us with the switch and we now wish we had always used Miacademy or a similar curriculum and system because #1 remained interested in the subjects and learned well. MUCH better video presentations, methodology, testing, etc. in our and his opinions.
I have continued to update #1’s progress periodically to make a point. No child should be left behind. That slogan from the government was true. The methodology chosen to deliver it in many public schools stunk. More were left behind than in the past as the progressive narratives and methods took root. That has led to crap results and American school children falling well behind peers around the world. The good news is that it is now easier than ever before to educate your child, or have your child basically educate themselves. Academic achievement generally soars. Homeschooled children have been documented to collectively test higher on college entrance exams than public school peers. Students tend to take ownership of their performance much better as there is nobody else to blame for getting distracted or refusing to complete assignments.
We chose to use an umbrella school at a low annual fee for reporting. They then report his progress and attendance to our county school system. This umbrella school has its own private school and is accredited in four states. When #1 is finished, he will receive a high school diploma just like all other students in public and private schools with a transcript for submission to colleges and universities as desired. He can take the college entrance exams, submit all of it and go from there just like everybody else.
Some remember #1’s health story. He was born three weeks premature with birth trauma as he was stuck in the birth canal for three hours until an emergency C-section was performed. He did not have many motor skills. He never crawled normally and had therapy for over a year to learn to walk. He suffers from Dyspraxia that contributed to the condition, which presents body awareness and coordination issues. He had a full set of teeth by age 15 months. Had tubes in his ears as well as adenoids and tonsils removed by age four. He was diagnosed lactose intolerant, which had contributed to GERD. That condition went away as he aged fortunately. He has severe sensory issues from the birth trauma that will be long lasting and includes foods. This condition worsened when the schools forced masking during COVID. His anxiety went off the charts, which triggered the sensory responses.
I discussed his binocular vision issues previously, which were resolved through eye therapy – another blessing. However, his eyes are still very sensitive to sunlight. We are using a good pair of wrap sunglasses to help with that as needed. What was once observed and misdiagnosed to be absence seizures, a form of pediatric epilepsy, turned out to be focal events triggered by anxiety associated with the sensory issues. As he has matured and become more confident they have subsided and he has learned to manage them on his own.
Many of these issues have contributed to ADHD type symptoms that persist, but are subsiding as he matures. The condition did lead to hyperfocus on things he likes to the exclusion of those he doesn’t. This is addressed by family and therapy regularly. The good of hyperfocus is revealed with his high degree of intelligence that when focused, manifests itself in excellent learning and academics as well as music, golf, etc. performance. The negative is the over focusing to the exclusion of what may be going on around him.
Fortunately, his height is normal for a 12 year old, but his weight is well below due to the food sensory issues. We encourage him to eat anything and everything he likes while exposing him to other foods to try. He continues to have monthly chiropractic adjustments, which have been essential for helping his CNS develop normally. Some will recall how horribly his spine was out of alignment until discovered at age 8 after we took him to an excellent chiropractor who had years of additional medical training on brain and CNS functions. This has reduced the effects of the Dyspraxia and helps him be much more coordinated with a more even keeled personality, which improves his confidence strongly.
We have addressed all of this as a family with the help of professionals and found that at NO time were medications helpful for #1. In fact, as I posted previously, when we agreed to use prescriptions from physicians they had moderate to severely negative effects. Chiropractics, Physical (OT), Vision and Eating therapies have improved or resolved many of the issues. It seems he has been through every test possible – MRI. scans, scopes, biopsy, blood tests, EKG, allergy testing, etc. Traditional medicine was helpful in the testing and eliminated some potential medical causes of the issues he faces. But as for providing cures – nope.
Throughout it all #1’s behavior and attitude have been exceptional. He loves the Lord, family, church buddies, and neighbor friends. His friends think he is the coolest, most fun guy on the planet, which strokes his ego. The golf and tennis have strongly helped coordination as well as assisted with sensory issues. He sings from his heart and is making good progress as a vocalist. In a year or so he will add back guitar lessons as his dexterity has improved greatly.
In less than three years starting from abysmal public school IEP reviews per teachers and administrators at the time that had him being a first grader academically, he has advanced 6 grade levels academically. He would have been a total failure if left in public schools. They are not equipped to honor “no child left behind” as they are manufacturing type facilities built on widget production. We cannot cast all the blame on them, his health issues would have made it difficult to thrive in that type of environment even with more dedicated assistance. We do blame them for not honoring the conditions of the IEP’s and the law by refusing to provide the required services without us pursuing legal remedies. Instead, their initial refusal and our decision to do it ourselves turned out to be the biggest blessing we could ever imagine. We give thanks and praise for all God has done to heal and grow #1. We know He has been involved in directing his path. Along the way we would hit a wall and not know what to do. Then when it was needed most there would be a clear answer that worked. We would then proceed down the path that led to the next solution to a problem. Some of those answers came from QTree members along the way. We are eternally grateful.
In summary, we have learned and worked hard to improve his lot in life. He has responded by giving his all and truly appreciates all of the help and attention. Very few if any people do not like #1. He is a light unto the world, but he is not an angel on earth. The teenager wiseazz is kicking in, which can be very funny or exasperating depending on the moment. Have no idea where that comes from.

There are keys that open doors to living and learning well for all of us, to achieve more that we thought possible. Find the keys, ask God to help, then use them to unlock and open doors. Pay attention to what God lays on your heart and do it, He will equip you. This is one old guy who never dreamed he would find complete fulfillment in helping homeschool a child, yet, here I am blessed beyond measure and still learning.

Hey guys, a quick update on my dad’s situation. It was a very long day & I’m exhausted, but thankfully back home now.
Dad had the Endoscopy this morning 9am ish & it revealed why he has a swallowing issue. He has a tumor intruding into the esophagus & causing the “tube” diameter to be about that of a dime in that area instead of roughly that of a quarter as it should be. The doctor was very concerned about the tumor & took a small biopsy, but results could take some weeks. I asked doc for his impression of what type of tumor & he believes it looks cancerous. He made a referral to oncology & hopes Dad might be seen even before biopsy results are available.
The Neurology appointment was in the same building but a different location & we made it just in time for the 11am visit. There were lengthy discussions of Dad’s history & that doctor did some basic neuro testing. She believes that Dad has a form of dementia & it was clear in some of the memory portions of the testing that he was struggling. She wants to have an MRI w/ & w/out contrast to better image the brain to see if a diagnosis might be narrowed down. She said some of the brain changes appear to be those associated w/ diabetes, which Dad doesn’t have though he may have “pre-diabetes,” &/or cholesterol issues, fwiw.
The third appointment was w/ his primary care doc in a different location, the one we saw last Monday. This was to perhaps get appropriate medicine for Sleep & Anxiety. Dad appears to have something akin to Sundowners where he has diminished functioning from roughly 6-6:30pm until 6-6:30am. The doc prescribed Zoloft for Depression/Anxiety & Trazodone for sleep assistance. SIL will likely trial Trazodone starting tonight.
Well that’s the bottom line & lots to process & address going forward. Dad was quite perked up, considering, when he was in the post-procedure “that went better than I thought it would”. He probably had 80+% of a 1000ml IV saline bag, so hydration may have been a partial factor at that point for he was still quite tired but in reasonably good spirits, considering.
Interesting times ahead…
Oh & Dad refused all pills, prescribed & supplements, the last few days. He seemed to assent to the new meds to help him emotionally & with deeper sleep, but we’ll see if he actually allows himself to take them. He hasn’t been using his Bi-Pap for a few days either so is possibly having some sensory issues that are impacting his “normal” sleep functioning. C’est la vie…wheee!
One of the things I found with BiPAP was that putting on the mask and kicking on the pressure put me right to sleep. If he hasn’t been BiPAPing, that might be the main thing keeping him awake.
It’s surely one of the factors unfortunately. He was wearing it consistently in the hospital 2 weeks ago though by his discharge had appeared to have forgotten how to detach the clips on the bottom front of the mask that allowed for easy on & off access.
I’m currently using a ResMed AirFit F20 full-face mask. The clips that keep the mask on have magnets to keep them latched, but will disengage if you sweep the magnets apart. In addition, the front hose clips onto the mask, so you can unclip the hose and go whizz — breathing is no problem with the hose removed.
His has more like metal hooks not magnets. At the hospital he pulled the hose off to use the bathroom, got back into bed, & got the hose back attached, but perhaps with assistance.
Just being in the hospital can give the elderly “white coat dementia”. A temporary condition, thankfully!

Wow, Valerie, that is a lot to digest. I’m wondering about putting him on anti-depressants, though. Doctors these days seem to prescribe them like candy. And they are very hard to get off of. I wouldn’t doubt he would feel depressed with the issues he was having. But if those issues are addressed, it could be a very different story. But I don’t know your dad or the whole situation, that just concerned me that they gave him anti-depressants.

I raised that concern too. Supposedly the Zoloft needs to be taken for several weeks to even show it’s effectiveness. SIL was really hoping that these could reduce his anxieties that seem elevated at night so he’s often only getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night often connected to ruminating & sometimes to pacing.. Because she & my bro have to deal with Dad’s issues directly in their home it appears that people are willing to try things that previously would have been out of consideration as in none of us want to see him on increasing meds so it’s a bit of a balancing act right now.

Did the doctor also make a referral for counseling therapy for your father? My guess is, No.
You just don’t give 2 prescriptions for antidepressants to a person and basically say, “Here, take these and see if they help.”
BOTH of these psychotropic drugs have side effects—physical AND psychological.
I say—as someone who has been the antidepressant route—counseling therapy is a must.

I did not hear a counseling appointment or referral from the doctor. Also he basically said, mostly in a gentle manner, that if it is in fact dementia that there is little that can be done with medicine. It’s still early days. Hubby said that Dad took his meds last night, per family group chat report, but I haven’t had the energy to check the discussion yet nor add my “notes” from the 2 doctors’ appointments yesterday.
The Zoloft is at the lowest dose available & the Trazodone is one pill at night for 2-3 nights to see if he tolerates it. Bro/SIL are allowed to use 2 pills of T/night for 2-3 nights if 1 is ineffective & can video call the doc &/or provide notes in My Chart in case adjustments are needed so that Dad doesn’t have to be dragged to another appointment too soon at least.
My dad denied being “depressed” at the doctor’s visit last Monday when directly asked. There has to be underlying sorrow in his grieving process for my mom’s death & even as he wrestles with his own decline that he is surely aware of but was mostly keeping hidden. He is a strong Christian & generally speaking has had quite an upbeat demeanor. Even when he was septic & in a hospital hallway several years ago he was not fearful or even thinking that he would die, even before Mom browbeat the staff to start him on IV antibiotics even before they had a room/bed for him!
Today would have been my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary. Mom made it to 63 years together, her 85th B-day on May 2, but her bad week leading to her death started on Dad’s B-day May 12 when he awoke to her crashing to the floor splitting her scalp in 2 places & an ambulance ride to the hospital. We never did get to celebrate Dad’s B-day last year as Josiah was in the hospital & then several days of major issues with my mom ending with her death on May 16. These are bittersweet memories.

Frankly, I think that mixing anti-depressant medications with anything can be problematic. Next thing you know, he’ll be shooting-up a High School.
Yes. My grandmother committed suicide in assisted living by saving up her anti-depressants and intentionally OD’ing. Left a note “Tell (daughter’s name) I took the pills”.

Thanks pat. I don’t know what her meds were but she had a long history of mental illness and treatments like electro shock therapy that didn’t help, probably hurt.
Based on what I do know, I maintain she had a Cluster B personality disorder (same as my mother) and would have been greatly helped with cognitive behavioral therapy.

Yours Truly is not a mental health professional, but I can tell you from personal experience — to be engaged 24/7 with a loved one’s mental/emotional issues can wear the caregiver down to the point where they can think/feel that THEY are “starting to lose their own grip on reality.”
It can be a difficult thing to do sometimes, but, IMO, it’s crucial for the caregiver to find HEALTHY ways to “dis-engage” from the patient/loved one for a few hours, from time to time — then get back to caregiving.
Whether that means hiring a private-duty CNA for a few hours a couple of days a week; or, having a trusted friend / relative “sit with” the patient/loved one a few hours a week; or, the caregiver seeking out counseling therapy for himself/herself — among other ways — it’s IMPORTANT: for your OWN survival.

Thank you so much PAVACA. I agree with everything you wrote and am always telling other people the same yet I don’t follow my own advice. There are days I get this deep, internal shaky feeling because I know I am starting to fall apart from the level of insanity that occurs.
I wonder what one does with someone who is mentally ill and slipping into dementia but has no need for nursing level or even assisted living care and will not tolerate the presence of aides. They’re out there and yet in all my research into eldercare, aging, etc., I’ve never seen this topic addressed.
Another problem I’m seeing is the old are taking care of the older. I have a 99 year old relative who has been taken care of in every way for several years by her late 70’s “kids” and now it’s down to just 2 caregivers as the others’ health has fallen apart.
Then there’s technology and gadgets these people want to continue to use yet they can’t and it’s always the computer’s fault or the TV’s not working right or the coffee maker broke because it was old. Last year I bought my mother 6 new coffee makers. Was calling it the coffee pot of the month club. But she wants what she’s always had and won’t settle for anything less.
She’s doesn’t have the cognition to operate these things anymore so give it up already. Like kalbo said the other day Accepting reality is a relief.
I will try and take your advice PAVACA and do something for myself. I did go to the dentist the other day which I was behind on so there’s that. 😁
It’s a difficult “tightrope” to balance on, where you are now, IMO.
First, there are the demands and the anxiety / stress / worry about the patient/loved one, plus the day-to-day caregiving duties.
Second, there is the “What Am I Not Doing Right? What Am I Missing?” thought loop in the mind of the caregiver.
Third, there is the “anticipatory grief” that may be present in the subconscious mind about the eventual loss of the patient/loved one.
Please, do all you can to take care of yourself.
Hubby is wrestling with his own thoughts & emotions & how our current situation with Dad is bringing up his mom’s death for him, & his step-dad’s death too, where a vindictive final wife of his step dad’s inherited all that had been Michael’s mom’s things, especially her original art (thankfully we & M’s bros each have a few pieces) & likely just threw them all away once her last hubby died. M has been more rooted in my family & had My parents longer in his life than he ever had his own. Complicated business…
At least get outside in the sun as much as possible.
It’s the little things! It’s the put your oxygen mask on first so you don’t pass out before you can help the others who need you dynamic. We can only do what we can do & need restoration to regroup from time to time.

This is a late reply that I understand you might not see. I have great empathy for your situation 🙏, and of course only you know the reality of it. I don’t know if your mother lives with you and relies on you to fix things that she can’t handle. If she insists on using devices that she isn’t capable of using, that seems like someone who should be in assisted living. If she is alone and doesn’t turn off the coffeemaker, there is danger of fire. (I know you know this.) There might be a way to have someone like her committed if she is incapable of handling things or is a danger to herself.
I also understand that it would no doubt be a major ordeal to commit her to a facility. The difficulties she could cause might complicate your life even more. I pray that you will be led to the answers you need.
Thank you TT. She’s currently in a very well-appointed independent living place. She doesn’t qualify for assisted living because she can perform the ADL’s (activities of daily living, like eating, dressing, bathing, etc.). Some days she does fine the next not, but you never really know if it’s an attention getting ploy or legit or just what’s going on.
She’s constantly creating problems that a group is pulled into. I can’t adequately explain what really goes on with this person. This mental illness part. It’s been this way her entire life and as her cognition declines it’s getting worse.
She’s attractive and charming and plays people meanwhile she’s figuring out who to use for her latest attention-getting scheme. “You’re mom’s such a sweet lady” Grrrr. I’ve been tasked with keeping her as life as stable as possible after my Dad was set free when he died 15 years ago.
I have no problem with actual caregiving, helping etc. That’s not what I’m doing though. I don’t even know what this it. If I don’t solve the problem du jour immediately she will find someone else who will try but everything gets mucked up because she misrepresents the situation. Well meaning people try to help but unwittingly make matters worse which creates a new situation which works for my mother because it’s not really about solving the problem it’s about having a problem to stir around about. It’s just madness.

Amen! I don’t know how SIL & bro are doing it as well as they are. I was exhausted from the 3 day hospital stay & yesterday’s, & the night’s before, events have drained me. It didn’t help that I got partially dehydrated yesterday so am trying to bounce back from that.
Thankfully there have been some Aides able to come & manage Dad in 4-8 hour blocks so that SIL can get her work-from-home work done…plus she’s a decade younger than me & little bro is 6 years younger than me (& they don’t have a special needs kid situation to have sort of beaten them down for 3 decades). Their house is on a lake now & the view & walk in their wooded environs is quite restorative. There was a Gorgeous sunset on Sunday night over the water. Dad was a big sunset watcher at The Cottage so bro’s house setting is Perfect for that serenity 🙂

My maternal grandmother lost her mind due to using a combination of antidepressants and benzodiazepines that were prescribed for her after she lost her husband (my grandfather.)
There were also unresolved grief / mourning issues for her due to “Poppa’s” death — her doctor apparently never referred her to a counselor for help.

Yep, that was my case many years ago when a depression inventory said I was “severely depressed”. The doc offered pills & when I refused he said “good”. I was hoping to address the “root cause” of said “depression” not just treat symptoms. Of course the root cause, as best as I could tell, was largely connected to complex family dynamics, especially the major special needs issues that were so predominant at the time. Nothing was/is resolved, we just learn how to keep going & when we collapse in exhaustion attempt to rest & regroup & get back into the fray again…

Bi-Pap issues were what motivated the doctor to order a hospital bed for him in such a way that insurance could cover it. None of us are comfortable in pushing him too hard on things, especially at nighttime when issues are increased. It’s like if they can get him in the bathroom & laying down to sleep that’s a bit of a win…sigh…

You have my sympathies Valerie. When the issues start to stack up it can be hard to manage one without affecting another. And you can put together a good plan but then will the person cooperate. It’s all just a lot. Please take care of yourself.

Valerie, please, please be aware that Zoloft is highly “addictive” and cannot under any circumstances be stopped abruptly.
If your Dad starts taking it, he CAN NOT STOP without weaning off very slowly. And the side effects of that weaning are severe. Having watched a couple of people go through it, I would never take it, or recommend it to anyone. And if your Dad has a history of suddenly “refusing meds,” it could be a real problem.
One person I know said it was like a lighting storm inside her head when she was trying to wean off Zoloft. She eventually gave up, and started taking a full dose again.

Zoloft is a DANGEROUS antidepressant.
Trazodone is a DANGEROUS antidepressant.
H3ll, ALL antidepressants are DANGEROUS.
It takes ABSOLUTE DETERMINATION by the patient, the CLOSE SUPERVISION by a doctor, and MONTHS to taper down and wean off ANY antidepressant.
And, even WITH a patient successfully completing the taper-down and wean-off process, it will TAKE MONTHS, OR EVEN YEARS, to REVERSE the damage done to the patient’s brain from taking these drugs (EVEN SMALL DOSES), and for the brain to rewire back to pre-drug function. And the process of reversing / rewiring ALSO MAY REQUIRE COUNSELING THERAPY.
And it often fails. That’s sad to me. People try so hard to get off of them, and can’t.

I guess the present attempted “fix” could be creating a whack-a-mole scenario instead of alleviating current issues to some degree…sigh…
Could he take melatonin, I wonder? There are good herbal remedies for anxiety, too. Valerian is good for sleep, but not everyone can take it. Lemon balm tea is another anxiety reducer, and it’s a just a mint, so it’s really mild. Another really good mild tea is holy basil, aka tulsi. It’s also in the mint family.
But of course, there are interactions with medications to consider.
I’m sorry your family is struggling.
I was hoping you would suggest some herbals. I find melatonin, and magnesium citrate do a nice job of letting me sleep.
I tried both, and can tolerate neither, sadly.
But I sleep great most of the time. The key for me is physical work. That helps me fall asleep in minutes and sleep 8 hours. At least. Some days, longer!

My son takes 5-HTP and says it helps.

Tryptophan in turkey is supposed to be what makes people sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner.

Been there, done that. Last time Dad put me over his knee I was 15 or 16 AND royally pissed. Let’s not forget the times that I got slapped across the face for sassing or talking back.
One time Mom lined my brothers & I up youngest to oldest & slapped our hands for something I don’t even remember. She smacks Mike (little bro caring for Dad now) & he starts crying “Whaaa”, same with Curt (who’s 2 years younger than me), she gets to me & I’m laughing because of the crying fiasco & she whaps me on the hand & I keep laughing, she smacks me even harder, & it hurt like a big dog, but I’m still laughing though it hurts enough to bring tears to my eyes. That’s all I remember, though I doubt it was the end of that scenario!
I was mostly a good kid, became a Christian around age 4 & really meant & tried to live it, but I did choose to speak up & argue things w/ my parents, which neither of them appreciated. I can recall saying at one point “I’ll do what you say but you are never changing my mind!”

I keep hearing “Trump doesn’t have a plan”.
First off, it doesn’t seem like the greatest idea to tell everyone what your plan is. (Especially when so many from within want you destroyed.)
However, for those of you who are unable to see it. Let me remind you.
One of Trump‘s biggest campaign promises was not only to make America energy Independent, but also to be the energy leader worldwide.
Take a look at the moves he’s already made. If you can’t see his plan, it’s because you refused to.
He told us from the start exactly what he would do when he said “America Will Lead the World in Energy”
He started almost immediately.
On February 9, 2025, he began his energy dominance plan by changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
He did this to circumvent policies designed to stop American oil drilling, refining, and shipping in the Gulf.
(The crazy half of the country lost their mind and called it racism)
Then with no delay at all, he went after the Panama Canal and regained its passage rights. (Again, the lunatics lost their mind and claimed it was about stopping innocent refugees, and therefore, ‘Racist’.)
Next came Venezuela. In a matter of minutes he captured a dictator, freed millions of people, and secured the absolute largest oil reserves in the world. (Suddenly the crazies poured into the streets, waving Venezuelan flags and demanding the dictator be returned)
Greenland came and went before their tears over the Venezuelan dictator even hit the floor.
With Greenland, he secured not only northern shipping lanes but strategic defensive positioning and mineral rights to one of the largest deposits of rare earth minerals in the world. (Think batteries, electrical components, semiconductors, etc..)
After gaining control of North and South American shipping lanes, oil, and rare earth minerals. He sets his sites on the Middle East.
Which brings us to Iran. So far he has decimated their highest leaders and military, while protecting their infrastructure of oil distribution (And the people of Iran are ecstatic).
At this very moment the U.S. is blockading the Gulf of Oman.(Arguably, more strategic than the Strait of Hormuz itself.)
In the meantime (while waiting out Iran in the Gulf of Oman) He has secured the strait of Malacca, and guaranteed control of shipping rights to the Eastern Seaborg. (Who knows how the Looney Tunes will spin that one when they find out.)
If you haven’t figured it out yet, this was the plan all along. Just like he said,

I agree. We need more pickleball courts around us. Some of us are pushing our county commissioners to get off their butts and provide more recreation facilities for county residents, especially for pickleball and basketball. It has been, and remains, my opinion that all children need to be screened and placed as individuals for education. Not every kid should be in calculus, not every kid needs auto mechanics. And some kids need home school no matter what.
Lumping all kids together into mass classrooms with no screening causes many problems.
And all of those problems need govt solutions, right?
Like schools aren’t run by the government already?
Public school is a government entity. It is badly mismanaged. Children are slotted into classrooms by age, with no regard to ability, intelligence, or existing skills.
A proper classroom should be sorted by levels of all of those, not by age. A child with 130 IQ is not going to learn properly in a classroom full of kids with IQ 100. He will quickly be bored, which leads to acting out and eventually checking out.
That kid, who might one day have done something wonderful with his mind, has been lost, because he found that learning was boring, so he stopped trying.

Promises to those who seek wisdom. (1-9) The advantages of wisdom. (10-22)
1-9 Those who earnestly seek heavenly wisdom, will never complain that they have lost their labour; and the freeness of the gift does not do away the necessity of our diligence, #Joh 6:27|. Let them seek, and they shall find it; let them ask, and it shall be given them. Observe who are thus favoured. They are the righteous, on whom the image of God is renewed, which consists in righteousness. If we depend upon God, and seek to him for wisdom, he will enable us to keep the paths of judgment.
10-22 If we are truly wise, we shall be careful to avoid all evil company and evil practices. When wisdom has dominion over us, then it not only fills the head, but enters into the heart, and will preserve, both against corruptions within and temptations without. PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Pancreatic cancer is one of the scariest. One reason is that there are really no early symptoms. By the time it is diagnosed it has usually spread to critical organs. It has been described as “a death sentence cancer.” (a dear neighbor of ours died from it – 5 months after the diagnosis.)
So, it is very interesting that, in the past couple of days I have heard or read at least 4 reports a very hopeful treatment for that very cancer.
It is an MRNA treatment.
Each of these reports have taken great strides to separate this from the Covid mrna saying it is individualized – not generalized as it was for the Covid vaccine. One even stating that this was in development and testing in early 2019 “before the Covid outbreak.”
The reports then finish with statements of excitement about how this mrna treatment might be applied to many other types of cancer.
The now very skeptical me notes how this is coming out now as more and more people are refusing the vaccines for Covid and “seasonal flu.” And how it is a breakthrough for one of the “scariest” cancer there is.
Pancreatic cancer death sentence is what I’ve read in the past.

Both of the lower courts had determined that Cuomo, 68, was protected by qualified immunity, which gives government officials liability protections if they didn’t flout clear legal or constitutional principles.
That’s why SCOTUS denied cert. Proper analysis is to resolve the case on other-than-constitutional grounds.
To grant ‘qualified immunity’ there must first be determined that there existed a constitutional protection AND that the defendant govt official violated it.
Since the case properly should have been dismissed on the standards of tort law, the constitutional issue is never properly reached even though the result [dismissal] is correct.
SCOTUS cannot grant relief because there is no relief that can be given.

I should note that, in essence, Cuomo was improperly sued. The complaint was quite likely deficient in that it alleged that Cuomo had a duty which he actually didn’t have. Either they named the wrong official or they alleged the wrong tort theory.
IMO the case likely should have been dismissed on a CR 12(b) motion on the pleadings. [can’t be sure because I haven’t read the complaint]

But I also think that hypotheticals like that illustrate what was not meant by “natural born citizen.” IMO it should be clear-cut and not something where if the father (or mother) is a communist dictator the son isn’t qualified, but if the father or mother is just a foreigner, not born here, the son has a chance to become our president. I don’t think the Founders wanted foreign influence at all.

The American military base was a sideshow. The 14th Amendment says born in the US and subject to the jurisdiction thereof. If the infant was not American because he wasn’t born in the US, then he must have been Panamanian AND needed a passport to leave that country. Since that is an absurd hypothesis, it cannot be a proper view of the laws at issue.
Eventually, the view prevailed that American citizen parents can give birthright citizenship to their offspring no matter where born. But it wasn’t done by SCOTUS so it remains a plausible view but not a definitive one.
Born to TWO US Citizen parents on US soil is unquestioned NBC. Soetoro was allegedly born to one US Citizen & one Kenyan so dual citizenship at birth NOT an NBC. Thus, SCOTUS is likely to vacate and remand to the district court to determine the issue in the first instance. Then the question would be whether a stay is issued along with the remand.
