When in the Course of Human Events…

I’m going to get out of the way, here, and let someone who was a far better writer than I am speak his piece:

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident,

that all men are created equal,

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,

that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

–That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

 
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

The only things I did to the above were to correct a typo that does not appear in the Dunlap Broadside (the first printed version of the D of I), and I broke up the paragraph containing the Self Evident truths, to highlight them, retaining the punctuation.
Most times when people decide to quote the self evident truths, they stop after listing “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
But the following sentences begin with “That” as well, and it’s clear–to me at least–that they are also among the “self evident” truths.  Yet they don’t get quoted nearly as often.
That’s a mistake.
What does get quoted is an encapsulation of a theory of rights, and I talked about this issue quite some time ago.  (https://wqth.wordpress.com/2019/03/04/what-is-a-right-anyway/)  But the following:

–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

–That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Moves on, and describes governments.  Rights are a part of us, a government is something we create.  Rights therefore exist before a government does.  Why create a government?
To secure our rights.  That’s it.  That’s the SOLE reason for a government to exist, that is its sole function.  It’s not there to provide a retirement plan or education or tourism subsidies or even farm subsidies.  It’s not there to run car companies.  It’s certainly not there to provide health care, nor is it there to micromanage health care or any other sector of the economy.
Protect our rights.  That means quelling criminals, and quelling foreign invasion.
And furthermore:
Once a government starts stomping on our rights, it is going against the reason for its very existence.
All those superfluous functions I listed (and many, many more) are not just “not part of what government is supposed to be doing.”  They are actual rights violations, because government must take money from you to fund them, and they invariably function to benefit some other person, not the country as a whole.  Robbing Peter to pay Paul is…robbery, a violation of your rights.
We are a long, long way from our Founders’ vision of what we should be allowing our government to do.
They’d be appalled at our country the way it is today.  They’d have been appalled with it during the Reagan years, too; this isn’t just a situation Obola put us into.
We put ourselves into it by supporting, sometimes even demanding, government programs that have nothing whatsoever to do with securing our rights.  It’s not “the Left’s” fault.  It’s OUR fault.
It is past time we dedicated ourselves to fixing this, not just holding the Left off.  Who here is ready to fight for a properly-constituted and just government?
Something to think about, on this anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s finest words.

Thank you for this post, Steve. The words of the Declaration never fail to stir something in me, and that’s why I took my moniker from it.
You are wise to point out that it gives us a blueprint for evaluating whether government is doing its job, which is to secure our life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and other rights. The list of usurpations is compelling, but not as much as this avowal by those who risked everything for freedom. I am in awe of their courage, conviction, and willingness to sacrifice. We owe them tremendous honor and gratitude for founding the greatest nation on earth.

Leftists read “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted … ” to mean Governments shall secure, as in “to obtain or get” these rights …
In other words, they see government’s job to get and then give you your rights. They see what they want to see, and they interpret the language accordingly. Good luck telling them they are wrong – they will not listen. Furthermore, “Governments” was unfortunately capitalised in the document – giving it the prominence that leftists want for it.
Furthermore, the Declaration does not limit the rights, it lists three out of an unknown total. The Bill of Rights does not nail it down either – leaving it for leftists to envisage an infinite number.
If you want to keep your Republic, you will have to negotiate with the other side. The Art of the Deal may be more apposite than initially realised.
They have all but withdrawn their consent to be governed by the current government and would say that they are acting in terms of the constitution to overthrow it …
So, although I agree with your interpretation, THEY do not. Negotiate, or Divorce, those appear to be your options.
Obviously, every election can be seen to be a re-negotiation. So prudence would dictate that one sees how things unfold, and act accordingly. If the Dims continue as they are, they could plausibly induce revulsion in the non-affiliated “swinging” voter (independents) who determines the outcome of election – problem potentially solved.
It ALL depends on how many radical leftists you harbour ….

Interesting. I’m reading the Declaration of Independence this morning. Funny how the Communist left, the Obama lackeys and Marxist professors believe the USA is somehow a “colonialist oppressor” – yet we were the ones to throw off King George and declare our independence, fought a war over it, LONG BEFORE the smaller countries in Africa rid themselves of European rulers.
We were WAY ahead of Kenya and Tanzania.

PS: Samuel Adams deserves much of the credit for laying the groundwork which led to the Revolution itself, as well as the Declaration of Independence. This was in no small part due to his successful effort to unite the colonies. The meetings that took place at the town, county, colonial, and eventually Continental levels, as well as discussions at taverns and dinner tables, uncovered/produced many great Patriots (including Thomas Jefferson), to whom we owe our INITIAL independence. It is our responsibility to maintain it (“… A Republic-if you can keep it.”-Ben Franklin).

Great post for today, thanks Steve! We’re blessed that our forefathers men of such resolve. They put out a hell of a strong statement and in no uncertain terms while fully aware of the jeopardy this would bring upon themselves and their families. Anyway, I’m very glad that you are still posting here!!! Speaking for just myself (I’m new to the Q Tree, a Q “agnostic”, & a Christian who very well might have become an atheist if I’d grown up in a different family) I am hoping that you feel free to speak your mind directly here (it seems Wolf is trying to have us be direct & truthful in this blog). I hope that in the future I do not offend or hurt you but if I do in Any Way please let me know!
There is a biblical message that is a very good guidance for communication, one with which I still struggle. It says “speak the truth in love”. I am more along the lines of speaking the truth but perhaps too directly which can be hurtful. My husband (from CO originally!) is ironically designed differently in that he is more apt to speak in love (unless he’s pissed off) so sometimes he tends to sugarcoat things which tends to shade away from the truth. “God” was brilliant in this balanced admonition of speaking truthfully yet in love.
Well, as a Christian I would hope to not wound you unless it was in keeping with another scriptural “truth”–“faithful are the wounds of a friend”–which to me, at least, means that a friend may hurt you but those wounds would not be of the back-stabbing nature but perhaps more of the excising cancer domain. But friendship is earned so the “right” to wield that healing scalpel is not ever a given…
I look forward to reading more of your posts & will try to keep in mind your certainty in the “non-existence” of God while I simultaneously attempt to conduct myself in ways that demonstrate my certainty of Christ’s cleansing, regeneration, & even resurrection of my soul! Best Regards!!!
