OK, that was interesting. YouTube apparently snuffed that video – and I completely forgot which video it was. YouTube now blocks ALL information on all deleted videos, so that you can’t find ways around their censorship. SNEAKY and EVIL Menshevik sisters behind that kind of cynical betrayal of truth. FIGURES.
SO – I researched the post tags to find out who the artist was (Lainey Wilson), and then scanned her videos to figure out which one made sense with my caption, and was something I remembered.
What it was, was an “official” but unreleased awards ceremony video (looked like CMA) of Lainey walking around with her mike, singing this particular song to the audience VIPs, standing right next to them. It was a great video, but I can see why it got pulled. All those celebs, close up – yeah. SOMETHING that somebody doesn’t want seen.
THIS is a somewhat similar video, with the same song, but at a different venue, and it’s not exactly the same scenario, but it looks similar. Enjoy!

These kinds of reports leave me somewhat ambivalent. It tends to create two conflicting concerns. On one hand, it strikes me as somewhat deceptive. On the other hand, it seems that its intention is more divisive (class envy) than informative. It irritates me because auditing the rich, elite, or wealthy (choose whichever word stirs the emotions), seems to be an exercise in whack-a-mole. Over the years I have read countless stories of powerful people underpaying or not paying their tax bill, whether it be income, payroll, or countless other varieties of taxes. I think of Al Sharpton and more recently, Hunter Biden as well-known examples. The irritating part is that none ever seem to go to prison, with the notable exception of Al Capone.

I did leave out one part.
If you go after a millionaire or billionaire, you are going after someone well armed with accountants and lawyers. That is going to cost you LOTS OF TIME and PEOPLE AND YOU MAY VERY WELL LOSE.
If you go after Joe Waiter and Suzy Teacher who does tutoring on the side AND who has a tax refund due, you can grab $500 to a couple thousand with out a fight AND MINIMAL agent time.
The amount may not be very much, but you can set up a computer program to do most of the work.
I bet if you dig down, the people targeted are small time business people who work a regular job, but ALSO have a small business too so they can make ends meet just like the guy in the video yesterday. People who mow lawns, cut hair, walk dogs, babysit kids, do a bit of handyman stuff…
Since most of these people are paid cash the IRS applies a ‘STANDARD’ amount for tips and such. Since you can not PROVE you earn LESS than the standard you get stuck paying tax on money you never earned.
Gail, there is no need for an apology. I certainly did not take any offence to the articles. My comments were aimed, as I mentioned, to the kinds of reactions those articles generate in me. It is less about the subject matter presented and more about its ability to confuse the reader. The topic, IRS audits, is a very complex subject matter that can, at best in a short-form article, scratch the surface. Couple that with the generous use of statistics and it becomes easily misconstrued. We get so many of this kind of article that we can often get sidetracked instead of better informed. As I said, it is a style of information that leaves me ambivalent. As you mention in the penultimate paragraph, such articles require further digging which, in most cases, does not happen.

My dad was waxing eloquent on his friend who built up a very substantial business primarily doing tax returns. For a while that friend’s son, who had gotten a CPA, worked for his dad. The CPA got to handle some of the Extremely complex clients, like a doctor/surgeon who had started like 54 businesses, all specifically set up to operate at a loss as a way to minimize how much of his hard-earned money got robbed by the government.
A lot of the real wealthy do that. Horse farms and breeding/racing/showing is a favorite.
It is one of the reasons horses are not ‘regulated’ and are exempt from liability.

One has to be careful with losses to offset income. If you fail to make money a certain amount of time, your activity can be designated a “Hobby Loss” and deductions disallowed.
Mind you, the activity doesn’t have to make money, net….IIRC, you have to “make money” two out of every five years — and that means you can lose $100,000 in year one, lose $150,000 in year two, make $5 (the bill with Lincoln on it) in year three, lose $250,000 in year four, and make $20 (the bill with Jackson on it) in year five, and you’d be good (other things being equal). Mind you, this is old memory and not current tax advice.

This is a long account about the situation in Canada by someone on Patriots Win. This is not sustainable in whatever country it is occurring in, including here. I think *they* want war to shake things up.
Meanwhile, I wanted to tell you why Canada is a dying country. Unless you specifically visited Canada in the last few years, you have no idea how bad it’s been.
It started when Trudeau banned non-vaxxed from taking trains, planes, receiving benefits (including unemployment) and going to pretty much anywhere. As a citizen, I have to pay taxes to the city, but I couldn’t go to restaurants. And now restaurants (which doubled their prices) are acting like nothing ever happened, in fact, everyone in the government (who abused us for years – we had a 8PM-5AM curfew. Not allowed to leave your own home lol) is trying to act like nothing happened.
Which leads me to my next point: debt went from 300B to 1.3T. You are not reading this wrong. And this is only the debt they admit to. We lost another $40B this year, in a year supposed to be a “surplus”. While it might not sound like a lot, it’s $65,000 per working Canadian. After taxes, that’s around 2 years of working. For money that went, well, god knows where.
As a teacher, I pay 43% in taxes and deduction. I earn $52,000 per year (yep), or around $24,000 after taxes. $1140 per pay, or $2280 per month; my current rent (JUST the rent) is… $1500. This leaves me around $800 for food, electricity, internet, cellphone, clothes, transports, entertainment, etc.
For information, I pay around $300 for food (eating cereals, lentils and canned food, for the most part), also pay $300 for student loan, $100 for transport (shitty subway that always breaks down) and around $100 for internet+electricity. This means I have… $0 left at the end of the month. I work full time by the way.
I haven’t gone out in over a year. Vacations for me is a pipe dream. I wanted to read an “auberge” in region, but the cost for a week-end would have far exceeded $1,000. I eat the same meals, ground beef if I can get it on sale, do the same thing, and if I want more than the bare minimum (lol), I have to work another job during the week-end. Keep in mind I have university education (explaining that loan), and not in some useless field.
This year, teaches for a 4% raise. Politicians voted themselves (yes, you read them right) a 30% increase. Plus that 4% increase. I wish I could have a car, but speaking of cars, they just introduced a new $100 tax on the already super expensive car taxes. Gas is $8 a gallon to give you an idea.
Don’t get me started on healthcare. People are literally dying in ER. A paraplegic lost his legs due to bed sores after he was left in a bed for four days in a row. Other people get diagnosed with cancer, then told the next available appointment with a “specialist” is in 11 months. A friend of mine got cancer, got treated oversea (full diagnosis, full chemo treatment) and came back to Canada before they even called him to give him a first appointment with an oncologist. Another waited so long his cancer reached grade 4 and was deemed unoperable.
Speaking of unoperable, get ready to get offered MAID if your illness is too expensive to treat. They get to decided whether or not you’ll get treatment or MAID. If you refuse MAID, you’ll be put on a waitlist until you die of the illness anyway. My aunt had cardiac problem (cough clotshot) and was put on a 2-year waiting list. She died a year in.
I won’t speak of immigration, but it’s completely… No word. Trudeau took in 1,000,000 people in 2024 so far. This adds up to the millions he already took. Most cities have more immigrants than native speakers. Those people get on our social programs (that they never paid a cent for) and they get to our food banks. I won’t write too much about this because it pisses me off.
Quality of life in Canada has plumetted. Our GDP is basically dead, our economy is garbage, and my rent just went up 5%. I get a 4% raise – before taxes – so that gives you an idea. Also, if you do make it, they will stop taxing 50% of your capital gains and now tax 66% over 250k. Have a million dollar home? That’s $50k+ extra in taxes. What for? Nobody knows.
Inflation is killing people alive. You might have heard of the Loblaws boycott. Recently, I saw a price of $12 for some deodorant. You read that right. Watermelons – on sale – are $16, chicken breasts can be $7 each (not even organic/bio shit) and… well, check it out if you are curious, but basically, everything doubled.
Houses, lol. Forget it. Unless you inherit one (and even there, hello property taxes), you are never owning a house, period.
And this brings me back to my question: why the fuck do I even bother to stay here? There is nothing to look for. Prices will keep going up. Quality of services will keep going down (I didn’t even mention the legal system that lets criminals off the hook because “too many delays,” see the Jordan rules). I will be treated more and more like a slave (Out after 8pm? SHOW US YOUR PAPERS, SLAVE, OR $1500 FINE FOR YOU). I still remember being chased by police (because yes, I got out). And I have to pay their salaries.
Ever heard of the fourth amendment? In Canada, a cop forged the signature of a judge to get a warrant. He got caught and nothing happened. Cops can search your bags if they “feel you are hiding something”. Don’t agree to the search? Too bad!
I wanted a car. I wanted to travel. I wanted a house. I wanted to go to cool places, I’ve been wanting to go to a beach for 5 years. I’m a high school teacher. I studied hard, university, and still have to eat fucking lentils with frozen brocoli every night. Oh and don’t get me started on the school system, every kid is on their iPad now, and if you take it away from them, they scream and threaten you. I’ve received threats from students, etc. Oh and the system is managed by old ladies that hate men (and students too). We have a union that eats 1.5% of my pay and does fuck all (except negotiate us a shitty increase that’s below inflation).
I have friends who are doctors. They make $175k a year (LOL) and every cent they make is taxed at… 54%. That’s right. Add in deductions, and most doctors (that don’t incorporate, a loophole) pay 65-70% in deductions and taxes. Plus tons of taxes on everything – hell, you gotta pay a 75$ annual tax to own a fucking cat now, $300 extra for a pool, 15% sale taxes, fuel tax, alcohol tax.
There’s a place in Quebec that wanted to charge you money to go there. I’m not talking about road tolls, I’m talking about having to scan a fucking QR code when you left the city, or else you got a $1,000 fine. Cost was $30 per day. Want to go on vacations there with your family of four? A week-end will cost you an extra $360!
In any event, I thought I would share how bad things are in Canada, and I feel I barely touched the surface. There are talks to ban you from using your dishwasher “except during approved hours.” Need to wash laundry at 4pm? Too bad. A beer from a bar? $11 minimum. For a fucking beer. I went out with teachers last night and a fucking double rum and coke was $28. Plus taxes (15%) plus tips (15% on top of all that), basically, it was the price of the bottle. And don’t get me started on taxes on alcohol…
In any event, the country I grew up in is long gone. I’m a young teacher and there is no future for me here. I’ve seen quality of life being utterly shattered in the last few years and nothing is going to get better. We pay two sales tax – quebec and canada – and the canadian sale tax doesn’t even cover the interest on our debt anymore. Every single penny of canadian sales tax we pay goes to pay interest on that “debt”.
In any event, thank you for listening to me. I am trying to emigrate to the US and if anyone has any tip for me, I am a taker. Another option would be to meet a woman in the US and marry. It sounds a bit weird to want to marry to get out (from Canada), but…

Well, his GF lives w/ her parents in a small, very cohesive Christian community of Indian (subcontinent) sub-culture that has passed through the Caribbean &/or Central/South America–her family having lived for some generations in Guyana. Her parents are the heart & soul of the church that IS that community so Brandon has more or less accepted that in order to be with Her he likely needs to be willing to relocate.
They are a Lovely, Godly family with pretty strong roots now in the Toronto area. Ironically before they moved from Guyana to Canada the dad was working in the US. They Tried to move to America, which was their intended destination, but it turned out to be much less problematic to go to Canada instead. Many years later they are very well tied in there now.
Apparently they live in a relatively small apartment w/ a relatively small kitchen where his GF’s mom regularly cooks enough food to feed the 50 some people in their church. The dad works 3 jobs to get the funds needed for this type of sacrificial giving & Body ministry…& they Love doing this…

A while back I was fantasy house hunting & found a place to consider buying so that we could Host her family on this side of the border, if possible, to ease their transition here. That is very much a back burner option that likely will never materialize, but I would be willing to pursue that to keep him/get them in America if that’s what it takes…

The IQ video was very interesting and informative. The guy was brave to document his own testing, but it was obvious from the start that he was intelligent and a critical thinker.
Among other things, I learned that the military won’t take people with an IQ below 80. They had tried it and found that the extra training required was not worth it.
Also, it makes sense that doing training and practice exercises before an IQ test can improve one’s score. It would seem that people should be capable of improving their cognitive abilities by being trained in various ways to think and solve problems.
My parents had my IQ tested by a Shrink in private practice when I was a kid (they didn’t necessarily trust the government). I did well enough, I suppose — I skipped second grade and was in the “MGM” program for life.
Considering the vast number of incredibly dumb things that I’ve done since, I’m not sure that it really buys you much.

It was also hard to deal with the subject matter because of the trail of abuses & usurpations suffered in attempting to get my special needs son’s educational needs met. Outside neuro-psych testing, to get a closer approximation of his Actual abilities, gave his IQ scores about 50 points higher than school testing (they refused to do even the basic accommodations necessary to ensure they were testing his abilities, not his fine motor issues, nor his visual or auditory processing challenges etc.). Anyway this strays into historic battlegrounds in my family & even loosely recalling it is soul-crushing 🙁

The neuropsych guys knew what they were doing. The school did not.
An appropriately trained professional is required to administer IQ testing. First, the testing has to include the right tests for the subject. Second, the tester has to perform the testing without bias. Third, the test results have to be interpreted correctly.
I would never trust a school counselor or teacher’s assessment of a child’s IQ. They don’t have enough training.
P.S. Your experience reminds me forcefully of my own experiences with my genius-level-IQ son with a learning disability. It took the neuropsych intervention to keep him out of the “special” classes in school.
Well even the neuropsych testing was problematic in the beginning. He got tested Very Young, maybe around age 2, & at that point they Thought his IQ was around 20. When getting those results (like so many experiences at the hospital, clinics, &/or school) I felt like I’d been kicked in the face or the gut…
Later, when he was older & more accurate testing was possible that outside testing put his IQ on the edge of low normal, though the neuropsychologist was convinced based on his interactions with Josiah that his IQ was likely higher than testing demonstrated & possibly even higher than average. Anyway in our first full blown contact w/ the local school district (he’d had much better experiences in nearby districts before going to our district) they absolutely Refused to consider the outside testing & had their own “qualified” school psychologist perform the various testing batteries on him. As I said their results were about 50 points lower than the neuropsych testing, though significantly above the former basement IQ of 20.
At that meeting, when their results were presented, there was Zero Effort made to reconcile the differences between the different tests, nor to even attempt to figure out what my son’s actual needs were. At one point one of the staff said “Josiah is already performing Above his Ability Level”! & that was their justification to try to pull virtually all supports from him since he was doing better than they even thought he was capable of…
I feel for what you went through but never had cause to look into gifted supports for any of my kids. Ironically Josiah’s (presumed) Identical twin took many AP classes & is extremely bright, having gotten the best grades, & highest scores of standardized testing of all our kids. Talk about seriously divergent pathways!
One thing I did get the school to consistently do was perform the Woodcock-Johnson tests on him, at a minimum annually. This allowed a pseudo apples-to-apples comparison of sub-categories of skills to help us better understand where his performance was year over year. Ironically this complex paper trail consistently showed that the longer he stayed under government indoctrination center control the poorer he performed. He rarely gained 12 months of skills in a 12 month span of time, though when provided w/ some summer services, these declines were diminished.

I feel for you. That is a sad tale. I often say that the years my children were in school I was at war. That’s how I always felt. The school system was the enemy. And back then, homeschooling was just different. It wasn’t within reach like it would be for me today.
That’s a pretty good way to look at things. My SIL was homeschooling her 5 kids about 1/2 hour away so if I’d had the nerve I could have attempted it, I suppose. I really didn’t think I could handle Josiah’s extremely complex needs (not that the school did That very well) & didn’t have the discipline nor organizational skills to even attempt that route. My daughter & DIL are both planning to homeschool their kids so I hope to help support them in that process as much as they will allow. It should be an interesting journey!

For example, if someone has never encountered the “what number comes next in the sequence” problem, they might have a more difficult time solving it. Within the last year, Normals have made their opinion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) unmistakably clear: they don’t want them, can’t afford them, and won’t buy them.
Economic reality has reared its ugly head and cost Ford billions in EV losses in 2023 and projects $5 billion in losses for 2024, $132,000 for each EV made. Even for a corporation like Ford, that’s real money, and they’re cutting EV production plans in half. Chevy is “pausing” their EV plans, and with the possible exception of Tesla, other EV makers are in dire financial straits.
EVs are too expensive to insure, which is driving up rates for ICE vehicles. Minor damage can total an EV, and Hertz has all but abandoned its huge investment in EVs because no one wants to rent them. They’re flooding the used market, but no one wants to buy a used EV either. Only about the top 7% of Americans in income buy new EVs, which now average well over $60,000. The average age of EVs is now 3.8 years, a decline from the past. Americans who intend to buy EVs pretty much already have.
Ford’s overall net income has dropped 20%–the inflation Joe Biden claims doesn’t exist—and Tesla’s sales have dropped 48% in the first quarter of 2024. Normals don’t want EVs, which are dragging down the entire industry.

He’s smart. Period. And waaaay too many smart people think that everybody can do what they do. It’s like reverse arrogance or something. They think you can “build your analytical skills,” and think just as well as they do. Well, it’s bullshit.
I come from a family of really smart people. And my DH is a tested genius (his tested IQ is ridiculous). These smart people have to be trained that not everyone thinks like them. Otherwise, they are impatient assholes. But in our society now, it’s considered wrong to tell people they are smarter than most others, and that many people won’t understand concepts as fast as they do, won’t absorb information as quickly, and is some cases just can’t understand.

I like these Veritasium videos, and enjoy listening to “Veritasium Dude” and his explanations, but I also find him intermittently annoying, not only in the way you describe – but in other ways as well.
At this point, I’ve watched several of these videos where, when it was all over, I realized that the whole point of the video could have been made more concise and completely understandable to average people, without all the deep explanation. But then, that would break the whole model of these videos, which is to elevate and escalate some minor scientific weirdness into a BIG CURIOSITY, to then explain it incredibly well, and get people to go “OH, YES! I UNDERSTAND IT NOW!”
Take IQ. Anybody’s (let’s say that again – ANYBODY’S) score can be helped A LITTLE by training and exposure to testing methodology, but the bottom line is what you say about IQ – which “is what it is”, and people just need to deal with it.
One thing I did like about this video is that it GENTLY pushed back into LIBERAL MYTHOLOGY TERRITORY – without offending them too much – and that’s not a bad thing.
Overall, these videos do help provide a lot of background on “whatever”, and that’s useful!

Speaking of IQ and cognitive ability –
If a group of people have an IQ of about 115 (one standard deviation above the average), and another group of people have an IQ of about 85 (one standard deviation below the average), then the individuals of the higher IQ group need to realize that the differing cognitive abilities of the two groups may have significant impacts when interacting with each other in a variety of situations.
The complexity of communications between the two groups, for example, may have to be tailored for better comprehension. Not “dumbed down”, but merely tailored.
William F. Buckley Jr. stands out in my mind as an obviously intelligent person who was a great “not how to communicate effectively” example. He was also disgusting to me as an effete intellectual snob, a moniker originated by another unpleasant individual along with nattering nabobs of negativism.
Too often, superior cognitive ability results in a prideful individual, one whom obviosly doesn’t understand from Whom that ability came.

Don’t underestimate tradesmen when it comes to intelligence. I’ve met electricians and HVAC maintenance guys who are plenty smart.
Truthfully, a lot of writing is aimed for a 6th or 7th grade level in journalism. The really fancy academic, legal and medical stuff…only those people really understand it.
I was thinking of Trump’s books Like Art of the Deal.
Believe me I have a great deal of respect for tradesmen. A good friend I highly respected never had any high school, Hubby’s granddad never made it to 4th grade and then went on to read every book in the town library.
I have also met a ton of PhDs who were arrogant asses. College esp now =/= intelligence.

Gail, how would you define intelligence? For purposes of this question, I refer to human intelligence as meant by a discussion among individuals who were evaluating IQ. What do you think would be a reasonable consensus on what it means?
I will define it as the ability to perceive the concept someone is attempting to communicate. From a Platonic perspective, the ability to perceive the form represented by the object. An example would be to listen to a lecture by the physicist Feynman. In such a case, if Steve from CO and I were listening to the same lecture, Steve would perceive more of what Feynman was trying to communicate and I would say Steve is more intelligent. Is that what people mean when they discuss IQ?

I am differentiating between memorization and creative problem solving.
Being able to understand what another person is actually saying and be able to communicate back to them. Able to help them understand how to help themselves and able to help them help others is a start. The ability to know what oneself doesn’t understand and be able to research it for deeper understanding and be able to share it.

I’m not attempting to answer your question but just want to add in that the theory of Multiple Intelligences seems to get a Slightly better grasp of just what Intelligence appears or purports to be. General intelligence, G in Wolf’s video, is often based on a subset of intellectual skills, especially those that lend themselves well to academic achievement. I don’t recall how many subsets make up the Multiple Intelligences theory but would guess that quite a few of them might coincide with combos that make highly skilled tradespeople so successful in their chosen arena.
My hubby always sells himself short because he struggled in school at times & didn’t test well having test-taking anxieties & (then undiagnosed) ADHD. I breezed through academics at the lower level but ended up struggling in some of my more challenging science classes in college, having never learned how to be a good student, nor really developing good study habits. I always tested well so my grades were usually quite good in spite of poor study skills. However if we talk about general retention of material one has been exposed to Hubby retains Way More of his academic info than I do. He has practical skills in Many arenas. His Multiple Intelligences are many & diffuse while mine Might be more clustered in the academic arenas which helped me sail through school but then have certain challenges in the real world. He likes working with his hands more than his head while I am the opposite ironically 🙂
Outstanding point . . . and it’s a pity that many high schools have eliminated studies in the trades and substituted memorizing the who, what and when of largely meaningless topics. Our local high school offers an almost amazing number of trades related classes and practical experience.
When I talk to kids I often recommend they look into the trades as an option. For the more intelligent a Trade PLUS Business school/courses is a really winning combo.

Which is why homeschooling Grandson #1 is working so well. We can talk application of what he is learning instead of just memorizing stuff and spitting it back out during tests. As an example, he was learning units of measurements in math. We compared customary American measurements to metric. I brought out the tape measure, circular saw and some boards. Practiced cutting to various lengths, measured door frames, discussed contours, crown molding cuts, angles, shapes, etc. He could take the practical application and then see it in his mind every time he did a math calculation concerning measurements and quickly determine if the answer made sense. He ended up making a solid A in math (96.2 average).
Did volume, area, etc. the same way. He now knows how to break down the dimensions and areas into shapes inside a house to help determine square footage, the volume, etc. The limitations of the book lessons were overcome with the practical applications during the same period of learning. Which in turn will help him build a base of knowledge for future learning of the subject.
Kids get bored with the constant memorization of non-usable information and calling it education. You lose their focus when it happens. They know better than us that a lot of it is useless.
For neighborhood kids, we used figuring out the number of posts and footage of fence wire needed.
Practical applications always make math more interesting.😋

Some bear experts told Cowboy State Daily that they’d never heard of a grizzly litter of that size in the area.
But in the wild, female bears will occasionally adopt and raise cubs that aren’t their own, which might account for such an unusually large Yellowstone grizzly family.
