Did God Divorce Israel?
One of the ways in which God assures His people of His love for them is to describe Himself as their husband. For example, the prophet says to Judah, “Your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth” (Isaiah 54:5; cf. Jeremiah 3:14; 31:32).
Israel often proved to be an unfaithful spouse, committing spiritual adultery by worshiping false gods and forsaking the Lord. In fact, it was due to idolatry that God spoke this word:
“I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. . . . Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood. In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense” (Jeremiah 3:8–10).
In this passage, God warns Judah against making the same mistakes that Israel, their neighbors to the north, had made. In their idolatry, Israel had polluted the land and broken their covenant with God. Due to the enormity of their sin, God punished Israel, and He illustrates that punishment like this: He “divorced” Israel and sent them away—a reference to the Assyrian invasion, which resulted in Israel’s removal from their homeland (see 2 Kings 17:5–7). Even given the example of Israel’s “divorce,” Judah remained unfaithful, as if daring God to mete out a similar punishment on them.
Having just cause, God, the faithful Husband, “divorced” Israel, His unfaithful wife. To make matters worse, God had asked, “If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again?” (Jeremiah 3:1). The answer, according to the Mosaic Law, was “no”; a man who had divorced his wife could not later remarry her (Deuteronomy 24:1–4). According to God’s metaphor, Israel seems to be in a hopeless situation: she has been divorced by God, and, according to the law, she can never be accepted back.
But then comes a surprising twist: God’s mercy intervenes:
“‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord,
‘I will frown on you no longer,
for I am faithful,’ declares the Lord,
‘I will not be angry forever’” (Jeremiah 3:12).
In the same passage in which God sets up a scenario of hopelessness for Israel, He invites His people to “return” to Him and promises that His anger will end. Could it be that God’s love is stronger than His people’s rebellion? The Lord doubles down on His invitation:
“‘Return, faithless people,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I am your husband. I will choose you . . . and bring you to Zion” (Jeremiah 3:14).
God promises to do what the Mosaic Law could never do: restore the broken “marriage.” It was unthinkable that a human husband would take back his unfaithful wife, but God is greater than that; He can and will forgive His wayward people when they repent of their sin and seek Him again (Jeremiah 3:13).
God used the shocking illustration of a “divorce” of Israel to stress their guilt before Him. But God never cut Israel off unilaterally for all time. He only asked that they return to Him and experience His goodness. In fact, after God says that He “divorced” Israel, He commands them three times to “return” (Jeremiah 3:11, 14, 23).
The apostle Paul explains, “Did God reject his people? By no means! . . . God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. . . . At the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace. . . . Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! . . . And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again” (Romans 11:1–6, 11, 23).
Another illustration of God’s amazing goodness is found in the story of the prophet Hosea. God actually commanded Hosea to marry a prostitute (Hosea 1:2). She did not remain faithful to Hosea. Then, while his wife was living in immorality, the Lord commanded Hosea to find her and buy her back. God’s purpose was to show the greatness of His grace: “Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods” (Hosea 3:1).
Hosea’s grace toward his unfaithful wife is a model of God’s grace toward His unfaithful people. Israel had been chosen and loved by God, yet they were unfaithful to Him by way of idolatry. In Jeremiah 3, God gives them a “bill of divorcement,” but then He pleads with them to come back. In Hosea, God pursues and redeems His estranged “wife” and seeks to continue His relationship with her. Both stories provide an unforgettable picture of God’s strong, unending love for His covenant people.
How can a divorced wife return and be restored? The law forbade it, but “mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13), and God still has a plan for Israel. God’s grace in the New Covenant provided restoration for all who would believe in Christ.
Once, the incredulous disciples asked Jesus, “Who can be saved?” Jesus assured them that salvation is based on God’s power and grace, not man’s efforts: “What is impossible with man is possible with God” (Luke 18:27).

I understand the point of today’s open, and thank you for it, bakocarl. One thing that strikes me is that, in Old Testament times, Israel’s unfaithfulness was about disobeying God’s commandments. “Israel often proved to be an unfaithful spouse, committing spiritual adultery by worshiping false gods and forsaking the Lord.”

I have always found this difficult to reconcile, and I don’t have an answer.

A very painful experience. But a minuscule price to pay for eternal life in Heaven.

The way that I look at this is that in OT times, Israel had faith in God, and so they performed what was required under the Law because of that faith. Then Israel changed and performed what was required by the Law, not because of their faith in God, but as though their obedience to the Law, their acts, was what had saved them – even though they had turned away from God to worship false gods.
So, before Christ, Israel was saved by faith in God, and after Christ was crucified, they showed their faithlessness to God by not believing in God’s Messiah, Jesus.

One Dead, Multiple People Injured During Shooting at New Hampshire Country Club – Shooter Yelled “Free Palestine!”
Later Saturday the police announced there was only one shooter and they were taken into custody.
‘One’ does not get a ‘they’ pronoun. Unless it’s a hidden message that the shooter was a trans freak.
I’ve noticed the press doing this a lot lately, for anybody. It’s stupid and irritating to me.
i remember from school, IF you didn’t know the identity of the shooter, it was okay to refer to them as “they” because you might not know if it was a man or woman. these days it seems more pc than anything.
I never heard anything like that. Started high school [9th grade] in 1962. When did you hear that ‘rule’?
I was born in 1960…so after that…lol
instead of constantly repeating the he or she thing or man or woman, we were taught it was acceptable to say they. shrug
It figures. I always tell people that I got the last decent high school education.

My grandfather had an eighth grade education until a college in San Diego awarded him an honorary Bachelor’s.
He was running their radio station at the time.
The late 1800’s and early 1900’s had superior 8th graders or superior teachers. Try and look up the 8th grade graduation tests. It is something that most college graduates would struggle to pass.

During part of his career, he would work as a projectionist in a downtown movie theater. One of the things he’d do to pass the time was work out the 12th root of 2 on pencil and paper. This is a significant number because it is the difference in frequency between adjacent notes in a tempered musical scale.
OTOH, it’s not so significant because he knew of a couple of other ways to get there (including just looking it up). It just fit into the work process.
For those unfamiliar with commercial movie projection, you’d bring a reel from the magazine, mount the reel on projector A, get past the leader, start it running, and turn on the light.
Then, while monitoring projector A, you’d go to the magazine and fetch the second reel. You’d mount that on projector B and move it past the leader.
When the reel on projector A was running low, you’d peek through the window at the screen. In the corner of the film would appear a little white donut, at which time you’d turn on the motor for projector B. When you saw a second signal, you’d cut the light over from projector A to projector B.
After the last of the film wound through projector A, you’d rewind it and put the reel back into the magazine, fetching the third reel. And so your night would go, alternating between projector A and projector B.
Mind you, a certain amount of precision was involved — if the film got stuck in front of the lamp, the heat of the lamp could easily ignite the film — which, at the time, was nitrocellulose (AKA guncotton). If you were doing it right, a maximum of two reels would burn in the projection room (the rest being in the magazine), likely along with the projectionist. The remedy would be to take a bucket of sand and throw it into the projector with hopes of extinguishing the film before it got to the reel.
My grandfather would use mathematics as a distraction from the constant stress and boredom.

My Dad dropped out in the 11th grade. He went on to own several businesses and became very well-off. Attitude and ambition make a big difference.
Some might use it in a pc way to try to avoid offending people who don’t like either “he” or “she.” or to refer to someone whose sex is not obvious 😱 because they have made a lot of unnatural changes to their bodies. But It’s really just a correctly used grammatical convenience, as you pointed out.
If the press uses “they” for a single person, it means it was a tranny until proven otherwise.
The presstitutes are afraid to ‘misgender’ by calling him “he” (which it almost always is), but the press is also afraid to call him “her”, because that will be harmful to the tranny cause, once the truth comes out.
So they sidestep the whole issue by going with ‘they/them’, because at heart, the press are just spineless NPC cowards.
The same way if the press reports on a bank robbery but doesn’t give the name or the race of the robber, only ‘BOLO for a man in jeans and a sweatshirt‘ (or similar), you know it was a black robber.
If it was a white robber, they would say it was a white robber, in jeans and a sweatshirt, and then have a bio segment and interview his whole family.
It is accepted grammatical practice to use “they” as singular when the gender of the person is not known. The alternative is to repeatedly use “he or she,” which becomes tiresome.

If I had my druthers, elementary school kids would learn the old school — he and she are singular, you is either singular or plural, they is plural, and unknowns are generally he…..
To be able to not be graded poorly, a student would have to show proficiency in a foreign language where there is a separate singular and plural “you”, there is a formal and informal “you”, where there are more than two genders in grammar, or other such. The assumption would be that you can speak English all your life and be essentially clueless about grammar, but if you have been educated about grammars you can bend the rules in your English.

I want to address some of the discussion about the lack of an exit wound with Charlie. I’m usually not interested in delving into most of this kind of online chatter, and I apologize this is somewhat graphic, but in this case, the fact that there wasn’t an exit wound is probably another miracle, and I want people to know.
I just spoke with the surgeon who worked on Charlie in the hospital…
He said the bullet “absolutely should have gone through, which is very very normal for a high powered, high velocity round. I’ve seen wounds from this caliber many times and they always just go through everything. This would have taken a moose or two down, an elk, etc.”
But it didn’t go through. Charlie’s body stopped it.
I mentioned to his doctor that there were dozens of staff, students, and special guests standing directly behind Charlie on the other side of the tent, and he replied:
“It was an absolute miracle that someone else didn’t get killed.”
“His bone was so healthy and the density was so so impressive that he’s like the man of steel. It should have just gone through and through. It likely would have killed those standing behind him too.”
In the end, the coroner did find the bullet just beneath the skin.
Even in death, Charlie managed to save the lives of those around him.

Surprised we are just learning of this now. Reporters today are such timid people, never asking questions. And you know prosecutors, always keeping their cards close to the vest never divulging the slightest details until required by law.

Everybody seems to be certain the killer bullet was .30-06. And that it was moving at plus or minus 2700 fps [normal load].

My mind cannot fully grasp the true forgiveness provided by the actions taken on the Cross of our Lord and Savior, much less his conquering of death and providing us the path to restoration and seats at the Lord’s table for eternity. No greater love than this…
If my past sins that He claims have been – “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our wrongdoings from us.” (NASB) found in Psalm 103:12 – need to be revisited in Heaven, so be it. I already know how sinful I have been as everybody in Heaven has who have experienced the same forgiveness. But if it brings glory to the Lord – do it.
That said; Isaiah 4:25, Jeremiah 31:34, Hebrews 8:12 and 10:17 among others say our sins are forgiven and forgotten. So I see no glorifying purpose to bring them back up to show those who have experienced the same forgiveness who are already in Heaven. But I defer to God and His infinite wisdom.
As a result, I see the heavenly relationship with Israel being reestablished with the remnant’s repentance as Revelation indicates and that He will do as He promises, which is to remember them no more.

Parents get wrapped up in the football glory too much. My oldest gs was a standout . His father (an almost pro pick) pushed and pushed. When gs had a terrible knee injury as a senior when he recooperated didn’t want to play anymore. His dad threatened and followed through to not pay for college unless he played. Fortunately gs is smart and motivated and managed to graduate with honors on his own.

Yup, if the bullet enters at an angle the entrance hole will be larger than the caliber. All depends on the bullet type and speed (FPS) once it enters mass. Either way the damage from a 30-06 is massive. Why it didn’t exit, I would “speculate” it hit the spine.

• Its entirely possible the bullet jangled around his brain stem and back of neck vertebrate. Got through. And skin stopped it. Ive seen stanger when hunting.
• Ive done similar with an 06 but at even closer distance just nailed the airbags if a yote. And found the round was lodged beneath the skin.. They do weird things.
• As have I. The bullet coming in at an angle, hit a vertebrae and ricochet, maybe catching more than one bone, losing energy. Not implausible
• Ive shot a deer with same round through shoulder bone. It usually anchors them and hits the heart so by the time you get to it its dead. And ive seen this round leave exit wounds through opposing shoulder bone. Ive also shot a coyote in the lungs with the same round and had to remove the round. And it was embedded just under the skin. Bullets can do weird things

If he managed to talk to “the” surgeon “who worked on Charlie” (there would have been three), the only thing he would have been told is, “I cannot comment. There is no surgeon on this planet who would risk his license and losing his liability insurance for the HIPAA and family firestorm that would explode on him if he opened his yap like this on any case, to say nothing of such a high profile murder. I have wondered about the implications of disclosing the information about the bullet. I had doubted that law enforcement would have wanted it to come out before they were ready. But then, I can’t imagine why someone would state something, literally to the world, that was made up, knowing that the real information would be revealed later. As a clarification, the “after” is after impact. While flying through the air, it would look more like the bullet on the left.
This appears to be a hollow-point bullet, where impact with something more than air peels back the copper coating to cause more damage inside.

Trump has brought up Begram airfield in Afghanistan out of the blue, and I was intrigued as to why.
Afghanistan? Now? What could be the meaning of this?
After considering some recent developments, I think I may have the answer.
You see, Begram is right to the north of Kabul, and some 200 kilometers west of the Pakistani border.
When did we last hear of Pakistan? That’s it. Last week, when it signed a military defense treaty with Saudi Arabia, which included, leaks told us, all military capabilities, including nuclear.
My thought was: after the Israeli attack on Qatar, the Saudis wanted insurance that if Israel went all out and used atomic weapons in the Middle East, Pakistan could make sure Israel doesn’t survive this using its own arsenal. This may help to cool Tel Aviv’s head.
So what do the Americans do right away? They look for potential ways to intercept Pakistani missiles flying west. Hence, the floating of the Begram airfield idea, which is situated perfectly for this purpose (Trump did try a laughable feint when he said Begram was ‘an hour away from where China produced atomic missiles’ ).
And if the US is looking to intercept potential nuclear Pakistani missiles on their way to Israel, which could only come in retaliation for an Israeli nuclear attack, then we are looking at an extremely, extremely crazy combination of US and Israeli leadership. Even crazier than we think.
I find it extremely doubtful that the Americans will gain access to Begram. But everything points to something very very big brewing in the Middle East. A spark seems to be all that’s needed, and Israel may provide it in a couple of days, when the world celebrates a wave of Palestine recognitions that shreds to pieces Israel’s long-term strategic ambitions.
I have a feeling we are going to be firmly glued to our screens in the coming weeks (and not a word about Lebanon).

I have never seen anything like that, and I have always straddled being a Christian with Jewish ties.
I think the Messianic Jews may be the most blessed of all Believers. They have the cultural & language knowledge to have a very deep understanding of the OT combined with the wisdom & truth of recognizing Jesus as Their Messiah–exploring the NT with that background is probably deeply inspiring & revelatory! The Best of both worlds!
There is/was? a Messianic Jewish congregation in Metro Detroit called Shema Israel & one of their rabbis, Loren Jacobs, used to be a fill in host on a local Christian radio broadcast I’d occasionally hear. Rabbi Jacobs; approach to topics discussed always made me want to check out his congregation, but that hasn’t happened (yet). I did attend a Messianic Seder that he lead & found it most illuminating & inspiring.
My tie is with one of the original tribes. Very old name.

I keep hoping in my genealogy endeavors that I run across some Jewish blood in either my or my husband’s ancestry, but none unearthed so far. His half-brothers, however, have a Jewish dad. One of them has accepted Christ but the other is not interested…yet…but many prayers go up on his behalf.

My connection to this old tribe is not through family, but my mother’s heritage is through Rotterdam and there may have been some connection that also may have been Jewish.
Our entire family is Christian. Presbyterian. Older, Methodist and Congregationalist. All different flavors.
The Jewish tribe is not family, but partner, unless my mother’s side has evidence.

Correct. Hubby & his 1/2 brothers share a mother. His brothers are full blooded with each other. Their Jewish dad was one factor in Hubby’s mom getting kicked out of the family inheritance as that side came from some German extraction & were highly offended that she dared to marry a Jew. both of his brothers are brilliant & did exceptionally well in their careers so ended up well off in spite of disinheritance.
What a shame!
Well it certainly changed the trajectory of Anne’s & her 3 boys’ lives. But, as always, God is good 🙂
