In 1966, Congress passed the Freedom of Information Act. It was meant to open up the records of federal agencies to the public. The law came about because of public unhappiness with the way the federal government had been handling things since the end of World War II. With the Nazis and the Imperial Japanese vanquished, Americans might have imagined that the country would return to older norms of governmental openness. The days of “loose lips sink ships” were behind us.

But by then the Cold War had made its chilly entrance, and in 1946 Congress passed the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), which created the postwar template for how our vastly larger collection of federal agencies would go about their business. This meant the galaxy of new agencies created under the New Deal as well the expanded powers of the wartime government now had their own rule of law, crafted to keep them within Constitutional bounds. I am no expert on these matters, but the APA included in Section 3 a license for federal agencies to exercise their own discretion over the information they disclosed.

Sweet Tea Smash

Ingredients

  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 4 mint leaves
  • 1 ounce George Dickel No. 12 Tennessee whiskey
  • 1 teaspoon Strega
  • 1 ounce unsweetened iced tea
  • 1 teaspoon cane syrup
  • Garnish: mint sprig

Steps

  1. In a shaker, muddle the lemon wedges and mint leaves.
  2. Add the whiskey, Strega, iced tea and cane syrup with ice, and shake until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a Collins glass filled with fresh ice and garnish with a sprig of mint.

This will be REALLY short and sweet as I was with my mother for out-patient surgery on Thursday most of the morning (CRASHED all afternoon and evening), and the pre-op work up team discovered a previously undetected issue. Let’s just say, for everyone here, please implore your vaxxed family and friends to request EKGs at their next appointments with their primary care team. Or sooner. We were at a hospital my family normally doesn’t use, and that step was added to the pre-op prep, and may very well have saved us a lot of grief down the line. Mom now is stalking cardiologists. So, my apologies for this not being quite up to DePat standards.

TOBIT 11:5-17

5Now Anna sat looking intently down the road for her son. 6And she caught sight of him coming, and said to his father, “Behold, your son is coming, and so is the man who went with him!” 7Raphael said, “I know, Tobias, that your father will open his eyes. 8You therefore must anoint his eyes with the gall; and when they smart he will rub them, and will cause the white films to fall away, and he will see you.” 9Then Anna ran to meet them, and embraced her son, and said to him, “I have seen you, my child; now I am ready to die.” And they both wept. 10Tobit started toward the door, and stumbled. But his son ran to him 11and took hold of his father, and he sprinkled the gall upon his father’s eyes, saying, “Be of good cheer, father.” 12And when his eyes began to smart he rubbed them, 13and the white films scaled off from the corners of his eyes. 14Then he saw his son and embraced him, and he wept and said, “Blessed art thou, O God, and blessed is thy name for ever, and blessed are all thy holy angels. 15For thou hast afflicted me, but thou hast had mercy upon me; here I see my son Tobias!” And his son went in rejoicing, and he reported to his father the great things that had happened to him in Media. 16Then Tobit went out to meet his daughter-in-law at the gate of Nineveh, rejoicing and praising God. Those who saw him as he went were amazed because he could see. 17And Tobit gave thanks before them that God had been merciful to him. When Tobit came near to Sarah his daughter-in-law, he blessed her, saying, “Welcome, daughter! Blessed is God who has brought you to us, and blessed are your father and your mother.” So there was rejoicing among all his brethren in Nineveh.
