One of the major arguments when it comes to the death penalty is how it can be administered in a “non-cruel” way. I happen to live in Silicon Valley, which is heavily networked with nitrogen pipelines. When you’re making silicon wafers with semiconductors, there are a bunch of processes that you can do in a vacuum (where every leak kills off a chunk of your wafer), or in a neutral atmosphere (that you can even pressurize to drive contaminants out of your process chamber). The most popular neutral atmosphere is nitrogen — thus, the nitrogen pipelines.
Nitrogen is odorless, colorless, flavorless, and normally comprises 78.09% of dry air that you breathe every day. This actually makes it exceptionally dangerous as an industrial gas, as humans have no way of detecting it (it’s almost 80% of what you breathe, anyway). There is no distress with breathing pure nitrogen — normal breathing distress involves a buildup of CO2, which causes panting and panic — this doesn’t happen while breathing nitrogen. Local accounts of industrial accidents support these observations.
One might suppose that nitrogen asphyxiation might be a lingering phenomenon — after all, the world record for breath-holding is 24 minutes 3.45 seconds [ http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/longest-time-breath-held-voluntarily-(male) ]….but this is not the case. Gases diffuse according to their partial pressures. To dramatically oversimplify things, let’s say that an atmosphere had 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen — while a bloodstream in a lung had 80% nitrogen, 19% oxygen, and 1% CO2…..inhalation would be 80% nitrogen/20% oxygen. Exhalation would be 80% nitrogen, 19% oxygen, and 1% CO2. But in a 100% nitrogen environment, that exhalation would still be 19% oxygen right out of the bloodstream. Breathing pure nitrogen robs a body of oxygen significantly faster than holding one’s breath.
Local accounts of industrial accidents indicate zero symptoms prior to unconsciousness, and only symptoms of hitting the floor if promptly revived with oxygen.
I have long advocated for nitrogen asphyxiation for euthanasia of pets and other animals, and execution of prisoners — I believe it to be the most merciful and cleanest means of inducing death.
