Two new sunspots have just appeared on the surface of the sun . . . normally no big deal, but these sunspots have reversed polarity from the sunspots of Solar Cycle 24, the one that is bottoming out and ending.
The reversed polarity indicates that these sunspots are from the just beginning Solar Cycle 25, not expected for several more months.
The preliminary indication, then, is that Solar Cycle 25 may not be as suppressed as currently thought, and that the anticipated upcoming “little ice age” may not be as dire as predicted.

we just put ours up this past Saturday…but it too comes down January 2. we’ll leave it outside by the salt lick for a while with some pine cones coated with melted peanut butter and rolled in bird seeds for the birds and squirrels…
I like that idea a lot.
we tried it one winter with a tree hubby fashioned from slats. the first evening we heard this clacking from the deck where we had it stored over night. three squirrels were hauling the “tree” off the deck by grabbing the pine cones and tugging…
live and learn. we now use wire to secure the tree to another tree trunk (tall ash tree by the salt lick) and wire the pine cones to the Christmas tree branches…the squirrels still get in the tree but they can’t run off with all the pine cones…the birds get some…
We have had a ton of rain as predicted. Christmas storm brought snow down to 3000 ft, but not here. Very cold for socal. I put food out for the birds on the covered porch and mr gil surprised a rat taking its share. No more bird food for a while. Our hawk and owls need to step up!

I loved that show! Funny, growing up in a very rural environment, lots of the characters seemed pretty normal to me.
There was a big discussion at my house yesterday about cities. My millennial 28-year-old liberal son was on about how we’re all gonna die because of soil depletion. Fifty years and nothing will grow, yada, yada. My 23-year-old son believes that cities are inherently damaging to humans and the planet. Part of his reasoning is that factory farming was not necessary until so many people moved to cities and became unable to grow/raise their own food, which has led to the soil depletion, etc.
My contribution to this was that my garden soil is “built” by me year to year, and is not depleted at all when using best-practices, which are in my case completely organic. And it can be done by anyone with any yard at all. I live in a small town, my total garden space is probably 40 x 40. And it’s scattered all over my lot. And many large farms build and enhance their soils in the same ways I do. It is just very difficult to pull off on a huge scale, which is why grocery-store organic produce costs a fortune, and isn’t really organic, anyway.
I think my liberal son is coming around to the understanding that all of the “modern” ideas he has been taught about how people should live off the government, supported by mass agriculture and social programs, comes with a high cost, and that it’s not “regressive” to return to more independent ways of living.
At least, a mother can dream, right?

The perception has been that Democrats are pro-minority, and it’s very, very hard to change that sort of perception. They’ve exploited it for years, and of course they’ve built up an article of faith that the current head of the GOP is a racist. And that’s the sort of accusation where every thing the accused does can be taken two ways–it comes with a built-in confirmation bias, so the same act will be taken as evidence that Trump both is and is not a racist.
Let’s just say (for the sake of arguing) that in fact the D’s are pro-minority and thus the party any immigrant from a non-white area of the world should want to join. She’s now caught between the socialism that she properly loathes, and the “fact” that this is the party that will look out for her. Not a happy place to be.
Hopefully, though, she’ll realize the Dems are not pro-minority in any meaningful way; they’re only pro getting-minority-votes. Which they think they can do as long as no real problems get solved and massive racism is perceived to be a problem.

Today I learned that some library systems have an entire “non-traditional” category of stuff that you can borrow. Some of the “non-traditional” items available include tools, sports equipment, cooking equipment, sewing/knitting equipment, and various electronics. All of these years, and I had no idea that you could borrow anything other than books and DVDs. Anyways, just wanted to pass along this tip because this isn’t well-advertised.
Oh yeah, and some libraries allow free access to online classes from Lynda and other places, too.
NOT what my tax dollars should be supporting.
Government invents ways to waste my money AND create “make work” for government employees. AND the dirt bags get a bonus also.
To me that would be a terrific service club project for their community, especially small towns.
perhaps in the larger systems…here in Podunk…not so much. our little library (one town over–our town is too small for even a small library) is one medium sized room–with the stacks of books and only 2 research computers-and those are usually occupied every day by 2 older woman looking for cat videos…
So anyone wanting to watch dog videos has to get there first in the morning. Camp out overnight to be first door buster if necessary. 😀 (Perhaps the dog defense league will lobby for a change in the rules, otherwise the library system is speciesist.)

I doubt they ever will. A statue necessarily memorializes and approves of someone they don’t like, but the photos make their point for them, that we’re all secretly just a bunch of racists. So far from censoring those photos, they probably are behind the fact that they are prominently displayed.
Right where I live, the library is in a complex with City Hall and the police department. I don’t see homeless there at all. Maybe in parts of the city, but that doesn’t manifest in all places.
I will say the population that is less affluent in this municipality DOES take advantage of the free computing time at the library to the point that it has to be limited per session.

Our library has had art that can be checked out for as long as I can remember. People would check out a painting or two for parties and/or holidays.
Yes. My grandmother’s walls were covered in original paintings that she borrowed from the library. This was a small city (6,000 pop.) but the library partnered with regional art museums. IIR.
Hmmm. Much art isn’t all that good, but it’s invariably expensive, and originals are irreplaceable. The art museum was taking a BIG risk there that the paintings might suffer some damage.
Local networking of physical items is necessary and can change a community in miraculous ways.

Computers, tech equip, vehicles, all kinds of things, warehouses FULL of equipment.
Gunner was 6 weeks old, and I had 23 employees working out of my house when our local County Extension officer showed up at my back door and asked ME to start a local United Way in our county. The request was out of the blue and I thought he was crazy.
Only thing I heard about United Way was they supported Planned Parenthood and I thought it was bad.
Well, I was misled.
Almost every county in the USA has employees working within the county who are part of a national campaign for United Way. Yet, if the COUNTY does not have a registered United Way (someone to raise their hand and say – “I will do it”) the money flows to a larger chapter.
In our county, before I did it, about $50K a year was flowing OUT of our county and to Jackson, MS, the state capitol. Money was then spent by leftists. It caused a huge problem.
For instance, when a homeowner had a fire, the fire “report” is faxed to Red Cross immediately. Red Cross NATIONAL organization allows three nights rental in a local hotel, a stipend of $250, and several hundred dollar gift certificate at a local Wal-Mart.
Because OUR local fire departments had no fax machines, were not registered as having a charitable arm, those who had a local fire were taken in by local churches. OR, if they ever found a Red Cross person, the WalMart gift cert was for a store more than 45 minutes away.
We changed the entire process to help people LOCALLY, with just a little bit of paperwork.
By simply raising my hand, being the Chair of our county United Way, that 50K immediately was available to OUR local county charities. At the time, I had a husband who hated me, made my life difficult, and a million reasons NOT to take on such a big responsibility, but I did it anyway. We went from 7 charities registered in the county to 26 charities. All the fire departments registered as 501C3, with help. They received all kinds of tech equipment — because the BIG companies donate their equipment when they upgrade (and get a write off for the donation), the warehouses for used equipment are incredible…..
AND because there is a LOCAL community United Way, ALL decisions on where to donate the money raised remain with the LOCAL Allocations people. WE DECIDE on where the money goes AND we get to audit all the charities we give money to. Within 2yrs, we topped $500K a year and corps match donations. That’s a million dollars a year to our local charities, fire dept, police, schools, domestic violence shelter, boy and girl scouts, churches, a local food pantry, a top three residential facility for adults with disabilities, a little scholarship board, an after school program AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY, and my favorite…….. the search dogs and therapeutic horses for vets with PTSD.
It was a SMART and EFFICIENT way to use charitable dollars to help local people. Also, a strange thing happened along the way. I was asked to be on the board for statewide boy and girl scouts, local hospitals, etc. And folks, a CONSERVATIVE voice on those boards is necessary. Best way in the world to take back our country AND help the people in our country. Get involved and don’t cede control to the left.

I find Michael Matt to be a bit naive about the efforts going on to tear at Christianity and the west (Voris is MUCH more with it in that regard, IMO), but he sees reason for hope. I watched this yesterday. He makes a lot of good points. I do think it depends on where you are, though. This Archdiocese has three TLM offerings, at least, every Sunday, both high and low. And the Dominicans living in community near the theological school they run fan out on Sunday mornings to assist where they are needed, thus giving GREAT homilies all over. The Jesuits are more stingy about that, but do help out as well. And most of them are younger guys. The ones coming out of the seminary here aren’t so much into the guitar and banners thing. In fact, we have about 20 years worth of priests just moving into pastor positions who definitely aren’t.
Maybe Pope John Paul II knew something when he talked about a new springtime.

really good investigative journalists probe sna push all the information they can get and then write their stories. they may be wrong in their assumptions, but if you find more evidence that proves your conclusions wrong, you own it, and move on.
this just seems so wrong now–covering every possible base to avoid being wrong, makes the entire argument seem weak.

Before I was banned I noticed a tendency for him to hint at deeper facts a lot, but never giving them out. That reminded me of internet scammers who promise to tell you how to do X in your life. They give you a pointer to a free article which doesn’t really give you the whole answer, but you can pay money. But what you get THEN doesn’t do it either; but it invites you to a multi-hundred dollar series of courses and/or even more (for more money). In both cases, how deep a dive must I take before he’ll give me the info he’s just been hinting at? (At least SD isn’t an internet ripoff artist, but it’s still an irritating pattern.)

I was quite surprised to discover a few years ago that it wasn’t just me and a couple of gun-enthusiast friends who had Die Hard Christmas traditions. I found that out by having someone ask me what Christmas movie I was planning to watch; at my hesitation she guessed the truth and complained about it. (I guess my open carrying in her shop might have been a clue.)
As for the “reindeer,” I had not seen a pic of an albino gator before. He’d be hard to see in a snowbank, but he’d be torpid (at worst) too from the low temps, so that’s OK
Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie in my family…in fact, we usually watch it after Thanksgiving dinner to kick off the holiday season.
My family does its thing Christmas Eve (that developed over the years since my childhood), so I often watch it on Christmas day itself.
Note that both 1&2 have Christmas tie ins.
Funny story, a couple of years back I went hunting for the movie, couldn’t find it (I had lent it out), so I said, “what the hell, I’ve never actually seen all of THIS” and unwrapped and popped Lethal Weapon into the DVD player. Turns out it’s a Christmas movie too!

Must be a guy thing. I never was all that enamored of Die Hard. One of them was WAY to far fetched for anyone who knows the Washington/Maryland/No Virginia area. Dulles goes down…um, within 100 miles, there’s BWI, Reagan National, Philadelphia, Andrews, Pax River, and any number of places that can take planes in distress, and do when necessary. It just didn’t pass the smell test.
There were a number of firearms-related things about that movie that fail the test as well. (E.g., switching mags being all you have to do to fire blanks versus live ammo.)
The first movie didn’t have that kind of technical blooper at all; but let’s face it he had so many close calls that it’s unrealistic in that way–he should have died somewhere before halfway through. But that IS storytelling.

As Arizona Daily Independent reported Mohamed Ahmed E A Al-Hashemi, a Qatari national in the United States on a student visa, is dead after he attacked an Arizona State Trooper on patrol in the area of Rural Road just south of the Loop 202 in Tempe.
According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), on December 19, 2019, just before midnight, the trooper was on patrol accompanied by a citizen observer. While patrolling the area, the trooper saw Al-Hashemi knock a street sign into the roadway.
Trooper Hugh Grant ordered Al-Hashemi to pick up the sign, but he refused to obey commands even as the trooper ordered him to stop walking in the middle of the street.
Al-Hashemi then approached the police car and kicked the front grill.
The trooper used a stun gun to subdue Al-Hashemi but it didn’t stop him from rushing the officer and violently punching and kicking him.
After over a minute of fighting, the trooper, who was in a fight for his life had no choice but to fire his weapon, killing Al-Hashemi.
Officials released a video of the incident during a news conference.
Authorities said they didn’t know if Al-Hashemi was impaired. The trooper had injuries to his face and head and is resting at home.
Authorities say Al-Hashemi was arrested for trespassing at the Islamic Community Center of Tempe on Wednesday. Police in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe responded to a disturbance at the mosque around 4:30 a.m. At the center’s request, officers gave Al-Hashemi a warning and told him not to return, police spokesman Greg Bacon said.
Al-Hashemi returned in the early afternoon and officers were called again. Bacon said he was then arrested on a misdemeanor charge of trespassing and booked into jail.

Well…unfortunately, if considered from a public health perspective, cleaning up the worst of it and dealing with the rat infestation is actually in the entire country’s interest. Los Angeles is one of the four cities in the nation with all modes of freight transportation, and plain and simple, those rodents hop a ride into the interior and we will have a much bigger mess – and not just in the big cities, either. Extrapolate down and if some of the diseases set in, rural areas don’t have the medical facilities to deal with it, and it would take a while to get the big medical centers up to speed with quarantine facilities and all that.
I mean, it’s going to be expensive, but that at least needs to be cleaned up as a public health issue, and if the state isn’t going to do a thing about it, I back the president on this one.

He had a dehabilitating disease and no family help, funds or way of dealing with the day to day details of living. He was getting to where he needed round the clock care to do for him. The government funding would only pay part of that so he suggested he would have to take his own life with no help. This was a beautiful, articulate soul who the government thought had no value. He committed suicide. It was all very public and there was not much blowback. Scary times….

Right now the units people are receiving are, frankly, beta test items. I’m in line for the last of the beta test increments (and debating whether to give up that early slot for one of the regular ones).

When I worked in the library at one of the local medical schools, there were decades worth of journals re eugenics. By about 1950 they were no longer being published, but once they figured out how reproduction happened, katy bar the door. The people who “know better” than the common man got busy.
That’s why the mass use of SOY for everything in food needs to be questioned. It’s raw, and in the far east, they’ve known for a long time that raw soy is destructive to reproductive organs, and that after a few generations there are no babies. And it’s sold as a health food.

I’ll say this – since I’ve learned to leave my devices alone while driving or walking, they have definitely shifted into the “mostly good” category. That, plus no apparent real-time tracking by black hats. They are back into the helpful and benign category.
Now, if we could just collect them at the choir loft door, and then keep the musicians from yakking, while we’re supposed to be working, life would be good.
It seems (to me) that the problem is not social media in and of itself, but all the psychologically addictive behaviors it very purposefully creates and implements.
If it was just a neutral tool, that’s one thing.
It’s quite different if that tool is intentionally designed like a joy buzzer that gives the rat new rat-pellets every time he pushes the joy buzzer button.
And that is the problem.
Yes, it is a tool.
If it was a tool that was completely under OUR control, like a hammer (or a gun), no problem.
But it’s not.
It’s a tool that is being used AGAINST us, very purposefully.
And you don’t want to be around a hammer (or a gun…) that is not COMPLETELY and TOTALLY under YOUR control.
THAT is the problem.
It is designed to be addictive, everything about it. And everything about it is designed to collect data on YOU, because that data is making someone else MONEY.
Not only are you not being compensated for your contribution, but all the manipulation and privacy violations (and monetization of same) is likewise hidden from you.
So it’s a million times worse than cigarettes.
Cigarettes are designed to be addictive so once you’re hooked, you continue to buy them, and the side effect is declining health until you die. But the cigarette companies were ‘only’ making money off the continual purchase of cigarettes.
Cell phones / social media are designed to be addictive (like cigarettes), and once you’re hooked you continue to use them. But unlike the cigarette companies, it doesn’t end there, that’s just the beginning of the abuse and negative side effects.
Once you’re hooked, you are continually exposed to the latest, greatest addictive constructs that research money can buy, and the appetite for your personal information (and ways to capture it and monetize it) is voracious and insatiable.
It’s sick.
I won’t use one.
Maybe a trac-phone in the car for emergencies, but even that, I would remove the battery and tape it to the outside of the phone, so it can’t be used as a tracking device.
The whole scheme needs to be exposed and people should be prosecuted and sued out of business. This is a million times more dangerous than cigarettes ever could be, and nobody is even THINKING of putting a warning label on it, much less calling it the poison that it is.
I hate regulation. I don’t trust regulation, regulation is abused, and it’s only a stop-gap measure until companies figure out ways around the regulation.
But I trust the multinational corporations and enemies of America even less than I trust regulation.
It won’t stop until we stop it.
I wouldn’t let my kids have a cell phone, and if I could take my nieces and nephews’ cell phones away, I would throw them in the trash. I remember when some network showed a gun being carried at a TP rally to prove their point, but they didn’t show that the owner of that gun was a black man. That was my first realization of how far the media would reach to smear and defeat us — in short, that they would shamelessly lie.
It seems to me that, today, they would not be able to get away with it nearly as easily. There are citizen journalists everywhere, and they are fearless. People video everything, and we have crack researchers who can find anything. The number of people with their own video channels has exploded. Citizens also have big media on their radar and are watching their every move. So the media is still going to lie, but they know they will get caught and called out for blatant stunts like that. They are reduced to making things up that are not as easily disproven, like producing false witnesses with false timelines. We are the news now.
