The warnings came as the FBI was just starting its Crossfire Hurricane probe into now-disproven Trump-Russia collusion, aided by the Clinton campaign-funded dossier by Christopher Steele. There is a syndrome where one city in a state manages to achieve dominance within the state — you see it in SLC in Utah, Little Rock in Arkansas, NYC in NY, Seattle in WA, Phoenix in AZ, Portland in Oregon, Chicago in Illinois, Boston in MA…..
It is relatively easy for a city to become corrupt. It’s “bite-sized” for that…..and, soon enough, the grift will consume the finances of the city and the corruption may burn out. But if the city is populated enough — and the rest of the state sparse enough — the grift will consume the finances of the city and just move on to the state.
In Portland, you merely have to be as weird as Portland wants you to be in order to loot all of Oregon…..until the rest of Oregon drafts a document that begins, “When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation…..”
We have to do something about these “city-states”.
It should be noted that Tennessee saw this coming, way back when they broke off of NC, and instituted a scheme to try and mitigate the problem. There are three sub-states to Tennessee — Eastern, Middle, and Western — and the primary cities of each are Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis — and each has been the State’s capital. There are various provisions within the State Constitution that counteracts one-city supremacy — a good example of which is that the State’s Supreme Court has five members….and no more than two can be from any one sub-state.
So far as I know, it is a unique example of using Federalist division of powers within a single State. Incidentally, if you look at the state flag there are three stars within a circle….the circle is the State and the stars are Western, Eastern, and Central.
If POTUS doesn’t already have plans to do just that, I’ll eat my MAGA hat. 😎

What exactly would you do? I’m in a state that has three sections that could control the full state as Dem if they would get their act together. (They don’t, usually.) One of the reasons why cities remain centers of activity and commerce is because the transportation systems revolve around them. Airports, highways, rivers and water conveyance, and rail. That was laid out by nature and over a century ago and the development grew up around it. For the most part, those who are afraid of the pathologies of humans living in close proximity have left. So, who remains, and moves in? In my hometown, it’s those who like vintage architecture, edginess, and are willing to do historic preservation, and they tend to be far more permissive in their personal lives than most of us would like.
From what I’ve seen, American conservatives aren’t in this group en masse.
What to do about “city-states”? Wake up the people.
Ideally, they’d be carved off into their own states, sort of like what Germany did with Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin.
But it would take a constitutional amendment at the very least.
Allowing and requiring states to set up their senates similarly to ours (e.g., each county gets one state senator, maybe 2) would also work, however the SCOTUS scotched that sort of thing with a one-man, one vote doctrine; they’d kill the US Senate if they could, but that’s too explicit in the Constitution for them to have tried.
If I had to put a tentacle on the initial source of the evil that infests these states…….it might very well be Defined Benefit pension plans.
States can’t run at a deficit…..but a Defined Benefit pension plan essentially says, “people are going to get these wonderful pensions, and it is the responsibility of whoever is around when they retire to figure out how to pay them.” The great majority of them — government or corporate — are essentially Ponzi schemes, where they use the contributions of workers today to pay the inflated promises of yesterday.
Mind you, there are all sorts of other scams and grift with governments — the city where I live, Santa Clara, California, built a stadium for the 49ers. They issued bonds to pay construction costs with purported expected revenues from unicorn farts to pay them back — with the citizens of Santa Clara on the hook as guarantors to the extent of $4000 each. That $4000 is for every living soul in the city — from millionaire developers in mansions to babes-in-arms in rental properties.
But the biggest scam of all is defined-benefit plans. Do you really want to defer fixing roads to pay retirees? Hike garbage collection rates to include a retiree surcharge? Choose between effective policing and paying retirees (who may no longer live in the city)? The ability to wave-away current consequences for current dumb decisions is poison for an effective civil society.
And, sadly, it was designed from Day 1 to break — and, when it breaks, those most effected will be weakened and aged and have no way to regroup and rebuild. Those future politicians left holding the bag will be scorned and cursed…..but they won’t have caused the problem.

His plan sock away as much as he can now take his 40-50 % of salary and medical (that’s supposed to be there) at the end and move out of State. By then he’ll be in the six figures range. And still be young enough to start another career if he wanted.

So, I’ve been looking at a selection of socket wrenches sitting on my desk (don’t ask) and it occurred to me — these are my six-sided 1/4″ drive metric sockets……Europeans obviously have metric sockets, but what do they use to drive them? Do they have a 60mm drive? Do I need a 1/4″ to 60mm socket adapter, in case I get European sockets?
For simplicity’s sake, I only looked at amazon.co.uk (this, BTW, is a great resource for the Brit-o-philes. They have teas and videos and books and all sorts of things). And the answer is — Brits use 1/4″, 3/8″, and half-inch drives to run their metric sockets. Heh.
How many sockets is enough, and why?
Well, let’s start with the big picture…..you may need six-sided sockets for stubborn cases, but you also might need 12-sided sockets for (a) limited-access, or (b) four-sided nuts/bolts — a six-sided socket requires that you can access 30 degrees of a piece to set the socket on the work — a 12-sided only needs 15 degrees…..but a 12-sided will round-off things much more readily. You need everything in 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ drive (and maybe 3/4″). And you need standard depth and deep.
Just looking at this, you find weird offerings like https://www.craftsman.com/products/289-pc-3-drive-mechanics-tool-box?taxon_id=6488 . Why do I say this is weird? It includes a 1/2″ driver, but no 1/2″ sockets. [Craftsman is famous for this — including utterly useless pieces in their sets to inflate the parts count.] The entire set is 6-sided, and includes for 1/4″ drive: 4-14 metric and deep; 5-12/32″ by 1/32″, then to 9/16″ by 1/16″…..and deep, except for 7/32″ [is there some reason that 7/32″ deep is never used?].
Switching to 3/8″ drive, you have metric 6-22, but the deeps lose 20 and 22 [?]. SAE runs 1/4″ to 1″ by 1/16″, but the deeps lose 15/16″ and 1″.
Nobody in their right mind purchases socket wrenches one socket at a time because the pricing is horrific that way — but the packaged bundles often make no sense whatsoever and have weird dropouts.
It would be nice if a kit were available that reflected actual needs.
As a retired grease monkey from the last century, let me say that I can think of very few situations where a 12 point socket MIGHT be needed. I still have remnants of my toolset and all the sockets are six point. Most are deep.
12 is a good number for eggs. Not for sockets.
A 60mm drive would be over two inches across the nub. A bit overkill for a 12 mm socket, no?

As regards the missing sizes, the metric sets here usually skip one or two as they simply aren’t used (think DIN, Deutsche Industrie Norm, which is now EN, Euro Norm, and how standards were set way back when). Some of the SAE sizes are pretty much identical to the metric one (or vice-versa), at least enough for gubmint work.

Thanks. This happens more than I would like, actually. It’s all related to a congenital difference in leg length. I actually DO have a difference and any time a change in my daily routine, sitting situation, etc., happens, I get out of alignment.
It’s sore this morning, but not stuck like yesterday when the spasm wouldn’t stop.
My wife has that problem, plus one hip socket is further toward the front of her pelvis than the other.
She has shoe inserts custom made for her, which makle her legs behave as if they were the same length. She cannot stand for more than a couple hours without the inserts.
I use Clearly adjustable heel lifts, and can put them at the right height. After my walk this morning, I think they need to be replaced is part of it.
And I can’t even clean the house without them.

I had 1/4 inch wedges on the inside edge of my shoes heels throughout school. I quit wearing them when soft rubber soled shoes came into fashion. Now I am paying for it with knee and lower back pain.
I gave up and made inserts from closed cell foam that have worked very well but when they squish down, I have to add or replace material.
If I get lazy and don’t use the inserts, the pain is back.
Isn’t it amazing how something as small and seemingly insignificant as a shoe lift can make all the difference! I often think of the 2 male classmates throughout my school years that had severe polio and wore those awful, heavy metal braces. I can only imagine the pain they endured throughout the rest of their bodies from the imbalance to their hips, backs, etc.
I have Morton’s Neuroma, which affects the ball of my foot instead of the heel…really only painful when hiking, especially going downhill when the pressure is on the front underside of your foot. Hiking stick helped that as well as knees.
Funny little story…I was hiking in northern Thailand…left my boots behind on a train getting to the location. Was able to retrieve the boots (thank goodness!), BUT my custom-made inserts were missing!! Go figure. I ended up making a temporary one with wads of toilet paper (sacrificing that very valuable commodity in the wilds of Thailand! LOL) and taping it to my foot for the rest of my hike.
That was the same hike a day or so later I slipped on a Ti tree leaf (drought conditions) and broke my wrist.
Lots of stories about that trip!

I looked at the bag, discovered the lug nut thingys were scattered on the floor. I carefully closed the door and ran upstairs to ask hubby if he had been in the Jeep.
He said no, why? when I told him what I saw, he laughed and thought i was joking, but came down to the garage anyway.
he was just as bewildered as I was–but my mind was racing–I thought there was probably a raccoon living under the seat now…or maybe a really BIG mouse…or worse a rat!!
he put everything back in its pace, assured me he saw nothing under the seat, and sent me on my way…

Mine eats but they cut out a large tumor between her legs. The tumor is benign but I am trying to make her as comfortable as I can without her feeling I punish her. We let her out of her crate and she can be on a trow rug I was several all the time because of the draining. I also have to was her twice a day or three. She has a lot of staples in her. I tried sleeping next to her crate not a good idea I barely could move the next day. I am glad when she can go up and down steps so she can sleep in the bedroom,

I told her that I wasn’t going to argue for the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, or whether the KJV or any other book was divinely inspired or infallible, but I knew without the least shade of doubt that Evil stalks the earth.
I guess that wasn’t what she was prepared to talk about, because that conversation died with a solid ‘thud’. Perhaps it was my tone of voice.

When I had a severve asthma attack (and pneumonia?) they gave me Albuterol + O2 for a while to stablize me and then sent me home with Prednisone and a strong antibiotic.
