SPECIAL SECTION: Message For Our “Friends” In The Middle Kingdom
You knuckle-dragging barbarians are still trying to muck with this site, so I’ll just repeat what I said last time.
Up your shit-kicking barbarian asses. Yes, barbarian! It took a bunch of sailors in Western Asia to invent a real alphabet instead of badly drawn cartoons to write with. So much for your “civilization.”
Yeah, the WORLD noticed you had to borrow the Latin alphabet to make Pinyin. Like with every other idea you had to steal from us “Foreign Devils” since you rammed your heads up your asses five centuries ago, you sure managed to bastardize it badly in the process.
Have you stopped eating bats yet? Are you shit-kickers still sleeping with farm animals?
Or maybe even just had the slightest inkling of treating lives as something you don’t just casually dispose of?
中国是个混蛋 !!!

China is asshoe !!!
And here’s my response to barbarian “asshoes” like you:
OK, with that rant out of my system…
Justice Must Be Done
The prior election must be acknowledged as fraudulent, and steps must be taken to prosecute the fraudsters and restore integrity to the system.
Nothing else matters at this point. Talking about trying again in 2022 or 2024 is hopeless otherwise. Which is not to say one must never talk about this, but rather that one must account for this in ones planning; if fixing the fraud is not part of the plan, you have no plan.
The Audit
The Audit is definitely heating up. Let’s see if the Opposition manages to squelch it and its consequences. I’ll be honest; I expect it to be ignored by anyone capable of ordering Biden/Harris to step down.
Nevertheless, anything that can be done to make Biden look less legitimate is a worthy thing!
Lawyer Appeasement Section
OK now for the fine print.
This is the WQTH Daily Thread. You know the drill. There’s no Poltical correctness, but civility is a requirement. There are Important Guidelines, here, with an addendum on 20191110.
We have a new board – called The U Tree – where people can take each other to the woodshed without fear of censorship or moderation.
And remember Wheatie’s Rules:
1. No food fights
2. No running with scissors.
3. If you bring snacks, bring enough for everyone.
4. Zeroth rule of gun safety: Don’t let the government get your guns.
5. Rule one of gun safety: The gun is always loaded.
5a. If you actually want the gun to be loaded, like because you’re checking out a bump in the night, then it’s empty.
6. Rule two of gun safety: Never point the gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
7. Rule three: Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
8. Rule the fourth: Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

China is in the White House
Since Wednesday, January 20 at Noon EST, the bought-and-paid for His Fraudulency Joseph Biden has been in the White House. It’s as good as having China in the Oval Office.
Joe Biden is Asshoe
China is in the White House, because Joe Biden is in the White House, and Joe Biden is identically equal to China. China is Asshoe. Therefore, Joe Biden is Asshoe.
But of course the much more important thing to realize:
Joe Biden Didn’t Win

Somehow, the middle of October always ends up as a clusterfark….
It’s going to be worse for me before it gets better.
I might have time to write the article this coming week…and I might not. Probably not.
Sorry to hear.
Anything we might do to help? [Expecting a “no”.]
It’s largely busy, some stress. And some good things.
The net result is no time.
Good things are good!
Do you feel like you need even more time off? We could always put in a relief author for as long as you need or want.
It probably won’t be me, because “medical”, but I need to open up discussion of all of this very soon. Our hosting is also up for renewal, and that gets complicated. We may be forced into a change. Not yet known.
No need, because honestly, this post took 15 minutes…most of it making sure I deleted anything from five weeks ago that wasn’t relevant any more.
The biggest hazard was that I was busy this evening (got home just before posting time), and couldn’t get onto the dang internet at work for even that long because the mobile connection at work sucks bigtime.
I was able to do the edits, then the damn connection crapped out just as I was trying to save for the last time and schedule.
I ended up pulling over into a parking lot on my way to where I was going this evening, just to schedule the post—much better connection there.
Appreciate your dedication! Thanks!

I know the feeling
After years as second fiddle, an executive is called before the Board of Directors and appointed CEO. As he enters his new office, there is small envelope in the center of the blotter on top of his desk.
Opening it, he reads: “There is an executive safe behind the portrait of the founder. In it are three envelopes — you’ll know when to use them. The combination is XX-YY-ZZ. Good luck. — the former CEO”. Seemed a little ominous, but he had things to do.
Within the first quarter, it was obvious that he was in over his head. There were rumblings in the financial papers, his #2 was threatening to quit, there was a threat of a strike, his Board was asking pointed questions, and his stock was in the doldrums. He opened the safe. The envelopes were neatly labeled “#1 — Use this FIRST”; “#2 — Use this SECOND”; and “#3 — Use this THIRD”.
He opened the first envelope. Inside was an older piece of paper, with a single sentence written in an older hand, as if the author had passed penmanship in the 1800’s. The script on the outside of the envelope actually looked a lot like the former CEO’s, but this little note in its antique hand said, “Blame the Previous Administration.”
The next morning, he called his team together to produce a multimedia presentation showing in great detail how much the previous management team had managed to make things an absolute cock-up, and how he was going to sweep out the rubbish and set things right. He made a speech to that effect on the evening news, gave interviews to the financial press, and talked privately on the topic with portfolio administrators. He got his labor force under control by showing how previous intransigence had thwarted advances in workers’ well-being.
He was a little weirded-out about the prior administration telling him to blame the prior administration, but he couldn’t deny the results. He actually appeared on the cover of Forbes, and Inc. magazine had him as an “up-and-comer” for next year. TV networks idolized him, his stock went up, and he could suggest that the Board of Directors do things that they promptly did. His management team started to step up and do what needed to be done.
Of course, six months later, the cracks began to show. There was so much success that everyone wanted to take credit for it — his underlings, the workers, the Board of Directors, his R&D group, the overseas subsidiaries, his “sales partners”….and success started getting shredded between these groups. Every meeting he had, there was a “gotcha” moment where one group tried to make him say some magic words that would harm a rival group.
Two months after that, the cracks were destroying the company. Groups were set against groups, the Board was in revolt, the overseas thought they ran the place, the Financial Press had gone unrelentingly negative, the SEC was investigating….
So he opened the second envelope. Inside, again, was an older piece of paper….with the same peculiarities of script as the first envelope. Again, the note wasted no words. It said, tersely, “Execute a Reorganization.”
As before, took his oracle’s guidance to his heart and performed it with every bit of zeal he could. He brought the overseas into the center, and decentralized all the formerly core IT, accounting, and administrative, functions. He expanded the Board, and created multiple classes of stock. He spun off a noisy division that required too much effort to make money, and made two major acquisitions of companies that would provide “synergy”.
That one lasted eight months before it became obvious that everyone hated it. He now was dodging subpoenas before congress and the SEC, had demonstrations where he was actually burned in effigy, his parking place needed security, and his wife and family were living in an undisclosed location.
Knowing full well that this was his final interaction with the oracle in the safe, he retrieved the envelope and slit it open on his desk. The customary piece of paper fluttered out and landed on his blotter, face down. It felt like there was a huge weight upon his chest, he could hear his heartbeat in his temples, and his vision narrowed down to only see the scrap.
When he flipped it over, it said, “Prepare three envelopes….”
Even if we can’t help you with anything else, we can help you make the envelopes…..
Lmao. Have never heard that, good one. Read it to dh and he chuckled too. Ty. 🙂
[snort; guffaw; giggle]
You’ve outdone yourself this time. 😂
Sorry to hear that, Steve.
Here…have a brownie:

😁 😘
Thank you, but I am low-carbing it. So I will substitute…
bacon.
Thank you once again!
Can’t go wrong with bacon!

😁 😋
Aaaah…Thank you dear lady!
Before seeing your comment I was literally like “uh oh, I thought Steve was into bacon”… 😉
Actually, it’s bacon goes into Steve. Quite often.
Because he’s got good taste AND an appetite for life!!!
Low carving or not bacon is always welcome
Indeed. though I imagine it’s strictly forbidden under some diets, and I don’t just mean Judaism and Islam, I mean actual “weight loss” diets (that probably don’t work).
I got a chance to get caught up on science sidebar links tonight!
Yeah, you were one behind!
Don’t put Any pressure on yourself. Even schedule a repeat of This post to drop next Saturday & edit IF you have time (if all that is possible–I’ve never scheduled a post to drop other than “post immediately”). Hang in there!
That’s part of what I do…grab the post from five weeks ago (that’s how I manage the rotation of the eagle pictures) and update it. And that’s about all I had time for this week.
It’s still perfect for it’s a place for everybody to land & discuss what’s happening…You Rock!!!
Thanks but the credit for that largely belongs to Wolf!
Many hands make light work – and I LOVE ME some light work! 😉
Dare I wonder if you mean c work?
Of course that must be done very quickly. As quickly as possible.
LOL!!!
AND that is also true!
I love the eagle pictures and stole one to use on my own little vanity website. I figure that says a lot about who I am without going into details. 🙂
Beware…someone might decide it means “bird brain.” If they are some leftist twit they’ll be certain of it just two or three paragraphs in…but f*ck them. Just f*** them sideways.
I am SO sick of the pretensions of the Left, that bunch of moral cannibals.
Ehh!
cannibals are fine upstanding citizens comparatively
Two cannibals are eating a clown.
One says to the other, “does this taste funny to you?”…. 🙂 🙃
Thank you for putting together another Saturday opener for us to “gather” therein.
How I would like the election stealers to be dealt with may resemble this…

An adequate start!
I am gonna have nightmares!
That’s from a grandmaintx post actually!

The Presidential Commission of the Supreme Court of the United States is holding a hearing today on the subject of packing the Supreme Court.
The White House has the stream unlisted, making it difficult to find.

These are the people who hold the future of 1/3 of our government in their hands. Taking notes and watching if you want to join. This is so important, and it’s getting very little coverage. There are just a little over 100 people watching the stream right now.
Article to follow later today on http://www.somebitchtoldme.com to connect all the dots.
Bidenistas…trying to figure out how to pack the Supreme Court?
😬 😕
These weasels are up to no good.
Communists. So evil. We just want to be left alone.
THIRTY-THREE participants–significant???
AND Exactly 1/3 are women…hmmm
Valerie Curren
Well, if there’s 33 persons, and they ** really ** wanted an “even* amount of males and females on the “discussion”, that would mean 16.5 males and 16.5 females. Which would then mean, since people don’t usually cut themselves in half (unless one runs into a Muslim performing Jihad, in which case, it will be done for you), one needs to take the .5 male and .5 female parts and combine them into a Hermaphrodite (like the photo of that new doll that’s apparently for sale now). One is assuming that various “sexual persuasions” are a given within the group.
Or, to make quite sure there’s at least some ** representation ** of what the wackoLeft is pushing, that would mean 8.25 females + 8.25 males + 8.25 persons who “Identity as Males” + 8.25 persons who “Identify as Females”. And since people don’t usually cut themselves up into fourths (unless one runs into a member of the Taliban, who will take care of this for you), one needs to take the four .25 parts and make Joe Biden. The above assumption of various “sexual persuasions” in the group remains.
Which is not in any way making fun of the fact that this “discussion” happening today may well be the start of the ruination of the Supreme Court.
LOL
“this “discussion” happening today may well be the start of the ruination of the Supreme Court.”
darn, I’m on the notifier…
I Wanted to strike through “the start of” and change it to “further evidence of” & then add a FIFY w/ happy attitude 😉
You forgot to factor in race/ colour and (trendy/imaginary) disability
Found this on Gab.
I had never heard of “orgone energy”…is this for real?

🤓 🤔
Pretty certain it’s hogwash. I’ve heard the term before, I’m pretty sure. I think it’s a moneymaker like perpetual motion machines.
More info! It’s a bit of a cultural icon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgone
I kinda get the “je ne sais quoi” of LIFE that the concept tries to grasp, but overall, it’s just sketchy.
The FORCE, Luke — feel the FORCE!!!
YUP. THAT is “orgone”!!!
buy into it & presto your or(e–aka money is–)gone 😉
Although, this….
This has to be seen not only in the context of quack science, but also in the context of secret Nazi science, the CIA, operation paperclip, MK-ULTRA, the Roswell crashes, and “headband” technology.
The spook agencies were / are VERY interested in what ends up in practice being psychology, actual mental projection, etc. – all that junk is very similar to what the orgone crowd were interested in.
Even though ACTUAL spook tech is explainable with ACTUAL science, Reich was dabbling somewhat aimlessly nearby. I’m sure he was regarded as a pest. It’s interesting what Einstein thought – seeing orgone through ONLY the physically obviously WRONG stuff Reich was doing to “prove” it – not being interested in “mythbusting” to ACTUAL tests or concepts which might not be what Reich thought, but might be interesting nonetheless. But I kinda get that, too. He had a long list of tasks, not much time, and really had to fend off the crackpots.
Frankly, I don’t assume that 5G is devoid of utility in this regard. The question is who knows MORE than who about how to exploit it.
Isn’t “orgone” what people do when they’ve had it with the shenanigans of Kate Brown?
The Anons have consistently ignored it as a slide.
It never gained any traction.
Very much like the “flat Earth” slide (attempted subversion) and there are many other examples of smear tactics – none of which have ever stuck.
The Anons don’t give a shit – not ONE – about what others say or think. They’re all-in.
The glory of free thought, and free speech!
The crabs could certainly use this, if it were any good. EMF pollution from undersea cables ….

Orgone was some weird pseudoscience thing in the 1970s. I read about it in some UFO magazines.
There were pictures of clouds with some darker spots labeled “Deadly Orgone Radiation” and things like that. Apparently it came in a good form and a bad form.
cousin of pet rocks & mood rings? (for some reason my subconscious rhyming self wanted that to say moon beams & that segued into Moon Unit Zappa, iirc)–yikes!
More of a cousin of astrology and UFOs, though at least the latter is based on a plausible premise so some of it could be true.
Pet rocks were just a harmless fad (like pogo sticks), and mood rings, I think most people understood they just measured body temperature which does have SOME correlation to mood.
thx for the enlightenment
Yep. They said it’s either here, or gone… 😀
(would’ve worked better with neither/nor, sigh…)….
I never heard the word pronounced, and I always would have guessed ORE-gohn (rhymes with “or bone”). Maybe it was like Oregon without the -e- syllable, though it occurs to me as I write this that there are two pronunciations of THAT: Ore-uh-GONE (used by non-Oregonians) and ORE-uh-gun (more likely to be used in Oregon). I was thinking of the former “ore gone” rather than “ore gun” which would sound a lot like organ. But it could be the “right” way to pronounce it.
I’ve noticed many of your puns work a lot better if you look at the spelling rather than “listen” to the way the words are pronounced. Most of mine I deliver orally so they work off the pronunciation.
Yep. I’m usually writing my wrongs 🙂
(though being a musician I should be cognizant of the sounds, too… sort of an onomatopoeic busman’s holiday…)….
P.S. Hope (and pray) you get your car and career problems sorted soon and well! It’s terrible that (the money-grubbing) insurance companies don’t or won’t pay out fair settlements, yet have no problem erecting extravagant edifices in self-honor (dishonest honoraria)… Sub-sub compact with or without submarined subwoofers is no substitute for an intact vehicle…
And whatever you do, DON’T TAKE THE CLOT-SHOT!
I’ve heard of a few boards for real-thinking vax skeptics, including red balloon, another on GAB, and others. I think there will be ever more people saying NO to tyranny and YES to freedom and common sense…
Plan B is to take some minimum wage (or slightly better) job and hold out until I am 65. That would be the end of my hobbies, but it keeps me this side of the air-dirt interface.
I am in great sympathy with you. My husband’s company has also announced mandatory vaxes.
Fascism is ascending once again.
I can’t (quite) blame my company for this. In our situation there really is an executive order.
Same, but it is an unlawful order by an unlawful and fake president.
With Bye,Done it’s really an executive ODOR…
If it was Merkel, it’d be an executive ODER. Do this oder die.
Merde-Kuh an der Oder… cough cough hack hack…
I’m sorry you’re having trouble and stress, and I appreciative the stand you’re taking for freedom.
I’ve seen stupid junk made with claims like that about it. I’ve seen beautiful items that would make nice decorations for your desk. I’ve personally found a few items that are perceptible in their effects. Not all built with Reich’s approach.
The interesting effects can be seen in their influence on water. Either the cloud buster type devices or for smaller items, placing below a jar of water while freezing the water.
There are other types of tech that do this too.
I like to experiment and these types of subtle energy things do have an impact on at least a local area. But I would rather reduce the EMF levels in a home before spending money on this kind of thing.
Here’s an example of a different approach. It’s called a health pen or something like that. Note they use ice to show it’s field effect.
Somebody fry that potato! 😉
Potatoes give us vodka- that turd burglar only emits shit

Q: Does anyone here have any blue water experience as a boat owner?
What particular part of this experience are you thinking about?
“Anchoring” when you can’t reach bottom? International relations at foreign ports? Navigation? Operations? Stores? Sail or motor? Jurisdictional disputes?
Mind you, I don’t have any particular experience in any of these things, but I can see that you are asking a question akin to “anyone here have any experience with multi-engine jet aircraft?” You probably want to know something, but you’re asking a question that will likely get you a lot of other things.
Repeating this little nugget which makes it very clear that mandatory vaccination is CRAP.

I think I see what’s happening here. Taiwan doesn’t have a phony commie CDC that’s part of the plot, so they never classified FLU or comorbidity deaths as COVID-19 deaths. They didnt engage in the FRAUD that the CDC engaged in. Meanwhile, Taiwan likely also kept an eye on vaccine-related deaths, and didn’t try to cover them up with sneaky rules like the 14 days that CDC uses.
Result? Vaccines not really helping.
I really like watching China in Focus. Always has interesting news.
Onboard with the vaccines are NOT helping. AND the CDC 1 day things smoke and mirrors, red herring of sorts.
MY take away from this Taiwan report IS the vaccines are KILLING the injected, without Covid.
More so than Covid it self is killing folks.
^^^ …CDC 15 day thing smoke and mirrors, red herring of sorts.
The vaccines are basically measured, metered, SYSTEMIC, COVID spike protein. It is not surprising that these vaccines are basically “artificial immunity” that is no better than natural immunity, because it does pretty much the same thing.
And the immunity is NOT as good. Not nearly.

Yay Steve, yet another post I actually Fully read & understood!!! Thanks for All you do. & please let us know how your battle for personal medical autonomy goes regarding your employer’s “vax” mandates. Team Wolf Pack’s got your back!!!
From what I’m seeing they’re going to pass all the exemption requests past a guy who has a big rubber stamp with the word “Rejected” on it.
oppo research & pressure time?
Damfino.
OK, so let’s try for calculus. If you’ve ever unsuccessfully studied it before, try to put that out of your mind for a bit.
Essentially, the fundamental exercise in calculus is chopping. Then you chop finer, and finer, and finer, and imagine what you get when you chop infinitely fine. Turns out, that’s useful…..who would have guessed in the later years of the 1600’s?
Let’s start with an arbitrary function over an arbitrary range, as envisioned on graph paper. A function must be squiggle that goes from the left side of the graph to the right without either (a) looping back onto itself so that there’s multiple y points that correspond to an x, or (b) becoming discontinuous — skipping some x’s. It can be anything. But let’s work with something simple to start.
Let’s go back to the old “y = mx + b” thing about a line. If we take “y = (5/7 x) + 3” between the range of two and four, we’ll start with (2, 4-3/7) and go to (4, 5-6/7). This makes the area under the line somewhere between 8-6/7 square inches (from the low point) and 11-5/7 square inches (from the high point).
We haven’t really started chopping yet, but I want to make sure that people aren’t completely lost, so I’m pausing for a bit.
Looks like you plan to teach integral before differential.
Also, discontinuities happen in the Y direction, not the X direction. E.g., a line y = x, but then after x=2, y = 2x not just x. The graph has gaps in the y value, but no gaps in x. (Admittedly this objection might fundamentally be semantics, but that would be solved by showing a diagram.)
There are a lot of things that would be easier if I could post diagrams.
And I was hoping to talk about integral and differential as Newton did, “Newton called his discipline the science of fluxions. That was his terminology. He determined the area under a curve based on the moment-to-moment rate of change.” [ https://www.testandmeasurementtips.com/calculus-and-isaac-newton/ ].
When I attended the University of Casual Sun-Bathing, as an Econ major, they had some lame-ass pseudo calc course for Econ majors (Math 11?). My mom was a math professor, and my dad was an Engineer for the City of Los Angeles — they had 5 STEM degrees between them and my dad was teaching nights. I enrolled in Math 3A — Engineering Calculus. The course was held at 2 in the afternoon and I completely aced it — I had the highest score in the class, got the highest grade, and was recruited for Math 7B — Calculus for math majors (I passed).
Math 3B was held at 8 AM. When I saw the results from the first midterm, went Pass/No Pass and fluffed out of it. Just imagine how well that went over with the ‘rents.
I understand calculus pretty well, but I’ll be damned if I deal with it before I’ve had my morning tea.
That said, I feel bad for DePat and Valerie. I want them to have a basic understanding of what calculus is doing without going through the drill, the grind, and the coursework…..and I want them to be ok with this, without headaches or stress. I really wish that teachers could refrain from being such assholes about it.
LOL, can’t remember What kind of teacher it was (at a Christian University) but just that I didn’t Get It…not Necessarily their problem 🙂
I’m with you on the morning stuff. I prefer to hit mornings by trudging through all-nighters rather than setting an alarm clock to attempt to jar my “normal” “biorhythms”…
thanks for your kind attempt to enlighten!
Night owl, I see. Same here.
Saturdays I wake up and would normally go back to sleep but then I think, “What’s happened on Q tree?” and it’s all over.
Yep, that’s been known to happen here too! 🙂
Yeah, I agree…if there’s a good way to impart the concepts without lots of drill about the derivative of the fifth power of the sine…That would be helpful.
I’ve often thought about trying to explain in plain words (and diagrams) with as little algebraic notation as possible, about how integration and derivation are opposites.
I did touch, once, in my physics stuff on how calculus deals with functions not so much numbers.
And I want to take a crack at “numerical integration” too.
How does this look?
https://www.calculushowto.com/calculus-definitions/what-is-a-slope/
Now explaining things algebraically is something I’d likely grasp pretty easily…
I guess when you come to the end of physics you can resort to some of the more challenging maths for the masses!
Ironically, all this dealing with the very small will get us back to the very large shortly.
You left out the word Mind after the word Small! LOL
Was talking about physics, not Leftists.
LOL Well I was referring to My Small Mind in relation to Yours!!! 😉
In a way numerical integration might be a good intro to calculus in its more “function” and symbol-manipulation based form.
Oh, and the engineers where I went to school took straight calculus, the same classes as the math majors. 135, 136, and 235 to get into the multi-dimensional stuff.
Even that had to be built on in electromagnetic fields class by that professor (who was a damned good one).
Could you also simplify how you got This more step-by-step please
(2, 4-3/7) and go to (4, 5-6/7)
He’s taking the number 2, and plugging it into his function “y = (5/7 x) + 3″ as X, getting y = (5/7) * 2 + 3 which, when you crank the arithmetic, works out to (I’ll show my work as best I am able on the keyboard) (10/7) + 3, or 1 3/7 + 3 or 4 3/7. So his first pair of (x, y) numbers is (2, 4 3/7).
The second pair starts with x=4, yielding y=(5/7)*4 + 3 or (again showing my work) 20/7 + 3 or 2 6/7 + 3 or 5 6/7. So his second pair of numbers (x, y) is (4, 5 3/7).
Every pair of such numbers, of course, can be used to specify a unique spot on the coordinate “grid” a lot like specifying an address of 213 1st street. That’s basically 2.13 blocks down the first street north of main street. (If the numbered streets run east-west and count “up” as you go north from Main street.) That’s not a perfect analogy, of course.
That’s very helpful–Thanks! Gotta run, hubby’s got a concert w/ one of his band’s tonight. Hope to check in later…
Speaking of music and math, Tom Lehrer has a few songs that could help (he was a math professor at UC Santa Cruz)… 🙂
Thx CC 🙂
By the way wouldn’t that original equation lead to a slope that stays at the same angle because the value of y is Always directly dependent on the value of x?
Yes, that’s precisely the case. It’s just a straight line.
OK for teaching integrals, rather bad for teaching derivatives because it’s too trivial (With a derivative, the point is to get a second equation for computing the slope of the first equation…which as you note is a trivial exercise here). Usually calculus teaches derivatives first, but he’s doing integrals first. (The point of integration is to calculate the area under the line. And believe it or not that’s the opposite of the derivative, in exactly the same meaning of opposite as subtraction being the opposite of addition, or division the opposite of multiplication.)
I Never took DifEQ aka Differential Equations, which was higher up the math food chain than calculus…
The word “integral” might be challenging because I can think of it as something absolutely necessary or as something that occurs periodically (but consistent periods)…perhaps my recall of the meaning of that word is off but it comes into play in the learning process.
It’s like I have to translate RSVP into repondez s’il vous plait & translate the French in my head even though I know most Americans think please reply.
…Most Americans don’t realize they should reply “no” if not coming, rather than only replying yes if they are.
Integrals are usually introduced near the end of first semester calculus. And I had three semesters of that, then linear algebra (which could be taught a lot sooner, actually), then diff eq. after that. That was as far down that path as engineering school required of me, but then there’s partial differential equations, tensor analysis, and so on.
So I could misinterpret what you shared as taking 3 semesters of First semester Calc. 🙂
As a pre-med student I was required one or two semesters of calc & one of physics. I was the one who arrogantly took calc-based physics when my major allowed for just general physics. At least it taught me to fail Twice, but not with grace…
What type of engineering, if that won’t dox you, did you study? My hubby started in electrical engineering at OK State but ended up getting electronics tech later at a dif school. He’s a very eclectic combo of practical skills, spiritual insight, & artistic temperaments–oh & this time of year it’s months of the hunting persona that comes to the forefront–fun!
I mentioned that you & I were conversing & he wondered if we’d ever discussed Nicodemus. Not to my recollection–yet!
I lost the tabs that I’d kept open of a theological discussion between you & Scott, iirc, but not the hope to enter into that Specific Fray—eventually. I am a terrible procrastinator & get bogged down when certain events are looming (like kids’ weddings)…so I haven’t forgotten about that & hope we can get back to it Some Time!
Scott never replied to my last post there…which was about a year ago.
It was electrical engineering. If you recall the two posts I did on Maxwell’s Equations, I took two semesters on them (and their engineering implications) alone.
So you’re syaing in three semesters of calculus they never showed you this symbol: ∫ ?
Educational malpractice if so.
No I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it but forgot most of what I “learned” about it & logarithms & factorials, iirc…
You (perhaps) forgot, then, that it is called the integral sign and you were doing integration. So you got further than you thought.
& apparently promptly forgot! likely more my fault than any instructor’s
In calculus, “taking an integral” is the ultimate expression of a basic axiom of mathematics, that “the whole is the sum of the parts”.
It ADDS a dimension (as math defines it), yet one must allow for a lack of information (adding a “constant”) when doing so.
One cannot go from a lesser thing to a greater thing, without introducing this lack of knowledge of that greater thing – one must “create” that (partially unknown) “constant”, a simple number “C”, an “unknown” quantity.
This is why a “constant” is added to all integrals, no matter WHAT one tries to integrate (“sum up totally”).
The symbol for integration is an “S”, IIRC from the Greek alphabet (the symbol Steve posted).
“Taking a derivative”, on the other hand, SUBTRACTS a dimension – it’s destructive, by its nature.
Calculus is about measuring CURVES; put another way, it’s about calculating the EDGES or FACES (et al.) of curved things – whether areas or volumes, usually.
Interestingly, calculus also works for LINEAR (straight) areas as well as curves (not straight).
To accomplish its mission, calculus uses the concepts of both the “infinitesimal” and the “infinite”, used together, to measure things that baffle linear thinking alone.
The technique was found in the mid-to-late 1600’s by both Leibniz and Newton (IIRC).
Thank you, ES. This is very interesting. It sounds like there might be a bit of philosophy underpinning straight mathematics 🙂
It’s actually just an old english style “tall S”, as seen in writing and printing from before about 1800 when it fell out of favor. Our modern eyes, on seeing it in old writing, want to read it as an F. (Or at least mine does.) It doesn’t help that for some reason a printed tall S actually has a little nub in it where the crossbar of a lower case F would be.
As for the constant of integration, C, mathematically speaking it arises from the fact that integration is the opposite of taking the derivative…and the derivative of a constant is 0. So, if you’re working derivation backwards (in order to integrate), you have to acknowledge that some constant might have disappeared in taking the derivavtive. (This is not a very rigorous description.)
A more rigorous description might just be that taking the derivative is a many to one process–f = x^2 and f=x^2 + 1 both have the *same* derivative, and putting the constant C into taking the integral makes it a one to many operation, as the reverse of any many-to-one operation should be.
However, the constant is moot if you evaluate the integral over just a range of numbers rather than from minus infinity to plus infinity.
I’m sure the instructor did his best to beat it in with a sledgehammer. 😀
Could be, I really don’t remember at all at this point…
Up to the camp this morning to winterize. About 3 weeks ago on a trip with my son to do some yellow perch fishing, but NO! A 3 inch round by about 16 feet tree limb had come down like spear and went right through the roof in a wind storm!
In the end turned out was lucky and got the hole patched. Insurance pay out was substantial.
Any who, got a lot of work to do next year and beyond I suppose 🙃
Is not life grand said the no perch guy!
See ya’all in a day or two I hope
Congrats that you got insurance to pay for it.
I’m still driving around with a mashed-in trunk because my insurance won’t pay for the repair and their proposed “total” payout isn’t remotely enough to buy even a high-mileage used car.
I told them today I have no choice but to keep the car (I expect to be unemployed due to the mandate on contractors) but I can’t fix it with the money they’re offering.
My car was “totaled,” and the insurance company had to pay me AND I got to keep it. Yours should, too. The amount they pay if you keep the car is less, but in my case it was only a less than $300 difference. I’m still driving the car, too.
Six hundred bucks and 20 percent off the remainder.
I can’t fix it with that amount of money.
It’s still quite driveable but the trunk is FAR from water tight and I get to look forward to small ponds in my trunk this winter.
Go down to Tijuana and visit My Cousin Ricky’s Auto Body Shop, open 24 hours a day, no cover charge anytime.
At least it was there in the 70s.
Yikes.
There’s a group for federal contractors to collectively work on legal action re: mandates. This and other groups developing strategies are listed here:

Chin up friend. It’s just 1 of life’s many travails. Better times are coming out there in the old west. I actually envy you!
Thankful you guys weren’t there to get hurt AND that insurance is covering! Enjoy your time away, even if it goes differently than you’d hoped or planned for…
Funny that happened sometime after the rain and wind storm…. God watches over those who LOVE HIM!
Amen, TIM, & helps to get us through it All!
Did you ever get to visit Hong Kong before the bastard Chinese seized it?
Are you asking everyone, or just me?
I was in the airport, once, post 1997 but before the recent tightening of the screws. I hardly think just being in the airport counts.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

The spirit of 1776 is not dead. It has only been slumbering. The body of the American people is substantially republican. But their virtuous feelings have been played on by some fact with more fiction; they have been the dupes of artful maneuvers, and made for a moment to be willing instruments in forging chains for themselves. But times and truth dissipated the delusion, and opened their eyes.

The country is headed toward a single and splendid government of an aristocracy founded on banking institutions and moneyed incorporations and if this tendency continues it will be the end of freedom and democracy, the few will be ruling…I hope we shall…crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations which dare already to challenge our government to trial and bid defiance to the laws of our country. I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies.

Thank you for passing these on!
TJ is one of my favorite of the Founding Fathers (all of them quite remarkable people, so that is a high bar).
Amazing how prescient he was, given how directly applicable to today each of those quotes seems.
It’s really just a matter of people who can’t be happy unless they control others…versus those who want to be left alone. The oldest conflict within mankind. Government is necessary, but government attracts the assholes (a highly technical term for the control freaks).
No Doubt!

Caturday!
Cat poetry:
SWIMMING FISH
The swimming fish call to me.
Their moving fins seduce my heart.
Oh, how I want to eat them down to their bones.
Oh, how I want want to reach down and grab them.
Alas, I cannot.
Damn the ice!
Damn the ice!
(hat tip smiley2)
That cat is in a world of hurt if the ice breaks and he gets closer to the fish that way!
Yes, if the cat breaks through it would be in danger of the larger goldfish clamping down on the tail and dragging it down to Davy Jones Locker.
I screwed up on the third and fourth lines. I wish I had chosen differently. If wishes were fishes…
Suggestion for Steve’s trunk?
Would that be similar to Davy Jones Trunk?
Psst: Davey Jones’s Locker.
I thought so too.
My first search included the Davey spelling. Most of what came up was Davy Jones Locker. Also, Davy Jones and his locker.
Seeing all three;
Jones, Jones’ and Jones’s.
Jones’s is correct, and likely the British usage (as is the expression). Kind of a “deep subject” as it were… 🙂 glug glug glug…
From Wikipedia:
The earliest known reference of the negative connotation of Davy Jones occurs in the Four Years Voyages of Capt. George Roberts, by the author Daniel Defoe, published in 1726 in London.
That is, assuming that the original Defoe text wasn’t corrected to modern day usage. Did publishers back then bother much with punctuation?
“…glug glug glug…”
Shouldn’t that be “glub, glub, glub? 😉
(fun and frivolity)
They were drinking on the way down… to keep warm and to keep Nessie away…
Davy Jones of the Monkees!
Daydream believer…
But Steve, I’m a Believer no matter what time it is! 😉
Unfortunately the last time we saw a video of the Monkees w/ Davy Jones on stage he was wearing a feather boa (think Phyllis Diller) & sashaying about–couldn’t unsee that one. & I used to have a crush on him as an adolescent, even though he was height challenged (usually a deal breaker in heartthrobs), ugh!
Yeah, he apparently had that effect (he was slightly before my time so I didn’t see his effect on girls).
One motivation for Star Trek introducing the character of Chekhov was that he looked something like Davy Jones. (Another was because the USSR actually criticised them for not having a Russian, given how much space exploration the USSR had done up to then.) The producers had the last laugh, because Chekhov made a point of claiming the Russians invented things they hadn’t, a pure joke at the expense of Soviet propagandists.
That’s awesome info! I likely saw DJ on Monkees reruns after school.

Following comment links…Klaus Schwab loves transhumanism:
“He is delighted to report that “sensors, memory switches and circuits can be encoded in common human gut bacteria”, (41) that “Smart Dust, arrays of full computers with antennas, each much smaller than a grain of sand, can now organize themselves inside the body” and that “implanted devices will likely also help to communicate thoughts normally expressed verbally through a ‘built-in’ smartphone, and potentially unexpressed thoughts or moods by reading brain waves and other signals”. He’s intoxicated by technology, only for the control over others that it falsely promises …
and oblivious to morality, and the control over oneself that it truly DELIVERS.
It wouldn’t be so bad if he were after technology for the control it gives one over ones environment (which can be good or bad, depending), rather than over other people (which cannot be anything but bad–some people just HAVE to own slaves to try to feel worthy, apparently).
But in the end…as I am sure you know because you as much as said it here…even that is ultimately worthless without self-control.
Yes, Steve – thank you!
The term “self-control” is quite tricky. Many believe that they HAVE self-control, when in fact they don’t (a self-deception).
I remember a sociopath once saying to me that he had “to *decide* (intellectually) how he feels (emotionally)”. This is wholly an upside-down perspective. Pathological – diseased thinking, no cure.
I’ve found that one of the best examples of what constitutes “self-control” comes from – you guessed it! – Tolkien.
The younger son of Denethor (the ruler of Gondor) was Faramir, and he exhibited the proper way to exercise / demonstrate it.
To wit:
>>
Quote 1, from Faramir [ The Window on the West ]:
” ‘What in truth this Thing [the One Ring] is I cannot yet guess; but some heirloom of power and peril it must be. A fell weapon, perchance, devised by the Dark Lord. If it were a thing that gave advantage in battle, I can well believe that Boromir [his elder brother], the proud and fearless, often rash, ever anxious for the victory of Minas Tirith (and his own glory therein), might desire such a thing and be allured by it. […]’ ”
” ‘But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo’ ”
Quote 2, from Faramir [ The Window on the West ]:
” ‘Alas for Boromir! It was too sore a trial!’ he said. ‘How you have increased my sorrow, you two strange wanderers from a far country, bearing the peril of Men! But you are less judges of Men than I of Halflings. We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. Not if I found it on the highway would I take it I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them.’
” ‘But I am not such a man. Or I am wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man must flee.’ […]”
<<
Herein lies a critical definition of wisdom – to know oneself well (and truly) enough to know when to walk away, and to have the humbleness (self-knowledge = self-control) to admit that one isn’t perfect – and HOW one isn’t perfect.
This highlights the difference between WISDOM and INTELLIGENCE. Wisdom is always more potent.
People like Schwabby haven’t this self-knowledge, believing themselves RIGHT – according to their OWN standards!. This is the very definition of subjectivity … yet they think it to be *objectivity”.
The exact opposite is true. They are WRONG! They are fundamentally mentally / psychologically / emotionally DEFICIENT (diseased) – and haven’t ANY place or authority to rule others.
I hope that the employees of your workplace catch the “freedom flu” right quick, and walk off the job until the unlawful “mandate” is rescinded.
Best of luck! You are not alone …
& of course both Wisdom & Self-Control come from God, according to Scripture!
Yes, Valerie – all knowledge belongs to God.
We are allowed only a glimpse of it – and it’s enough for us to make the proper choice, I believe.
We merely read a partial text, subject to His supernal context: the ultimate context is God.
Always was, always is, and always will be.
Our “wisdom” (EQ) is finite; and infinite is His wisdom.
The same goes for IQ and for self-control … and EVERYTHING else, bar none!
It’s the third time that I’ve said this, and it bears repeating:
TRINITY COMES ***FIRST***.
Amen, ES, very well said!
Certainly aligns with the Big Pharma CEO that reported they had “cracked’ the DNA software.
Unless they are stopped, they can seemingly do anything, and folks globally will be oblivious to what is being inserted into their bodies…their DNA.
Yeah, this one is scary, but irrefutable. A good catch. There IS a tracker in the vaxx, or so it would appear. Yikes!
Not surprising. Decades of planning coming together.
BillyGhoul Gates has been trying since forever to tie a unique instance of Windows to a particular computer via a GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier) not only “sent back to the MotherShip” upon installation of the OS, but embedded in the BIOS/UEFI of the motherboard. The intent being that if you replaced the mobo, CPU, or other major components, you’d have to buy a new copy of Windows.
Germany and the EU, back when they actually (or perhaps accidentally) did something useful once in a while, took a VERY dim view of this, to the point that hardware lock-in was not allowed.
This was later watered down such that for OEMs (pre-installed by a computer manufacturer, e.g. HP, Acer, Asus, Dell, or whomever) DID have the hardware lock-in; versions of the OS purchased at retail still don’t.
Now, of course, with WinDoze 1 0 (and, sad to say, 11), we all get to Alpha-test billy’s barful garbage, and “software as a (dis)service” is now de rigeur. And with 11, one can only log in via Micro$haft’s server(s), and likely their “permission”.
Bastiges.
Having said that, is it any surprise that BillyGhoul wants ALL of us to have GUIDs too?????
After all, we’re just another machine/device to him, too…..
[And no, no litany of various OSs, etc. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and I’ve seen that from the inside for more than three decades – there’s a lot of crap out there, and a lot of gold and clever code too… this is about BillyGhoul and his quest for TOTAL KONTROL…]….
He’s a freakin’ monster.
Also, his article from 10/14 about the CA port mess rang true.
