Yesterday I reformatted a 128 GB USB to whatever mkfs uses for a default (ext3 or ext4)…and it took *hours*. I guess the journalling is expensive to set up.
(Why did I do this? Because it was formatted NTFS and by default NTFS reading software is NOT installed on my VMs.)
Wow. I use GParted and it takes just a couple of minutes. Then, again, I’m not encrypting ’em.
I wasn’t encrypting this one, either. I was surprised, and not in a pleasant way.
I have essentially completed the process of converting my laptop over to Qubes, now. Ironically it has more “disk” (SSD) space than the desktop does. With any decent luck I can back up my email client VM (on the desktop) and restore it on the laptop so it’s with me when I go on road trips–then of course reverse the process when I get back.
The USB stick is for moving files between the two systems, and generally those files are themselves encrypted one way or another.
Makes me wonder what mkfs might be doing that parted doesn’t.
I’ve noticed in general that sometimes the USB stick works fast, sometimes slow, for the same amount of data.

Well after a hurricane, we had all the roads clear before the road crews could get to us.That included the oak with a trunk as big as my dually. We tried to remove the section with chains to the dually but it didn’t move so one of the farmers got his tractor and moved it. The tractor had wheels that were a good 6 ft in diameter.
Farmers just head out with their chain saws and get it done!

We rode the sidewalks, and if people were on the sidewalk, we rode around them through the grass.

1 can evap goat milk
1 can water
1 raw egg (I wash the outside very well with antibacteria soup before cracking)
1/2 packet of unflavored gelatin

Yes! Our houseguest sits & stares at the TV ALL Stinking Day!!! It drives me nuts…& the living room is where my laptop is so I’m trying to tune out Crap All Day Long!
The only regular TV we would typically watch around here is football & hockey if we can find Hockey Night in Canada & various after work vegging shows, like Mash, that hubby watches. Well we got into watching CSI Miami on one of those extra channels, 50-3, before hubby had to be waking up at 3am. Now he’s usually going to bed at 8pm & if the houseguest & son were not here I’d probably turn the TV off as soon as hubby was done with it…sigh…
Growing up, I went to college, then moved away for a couple of years because it was the only job I could find (I interview horribly).
When I came back and visited my parents, I was astounded at how unused I was to having the TV blaring all day. Nothing had changed, really…except me.
When I was home alone, or w/ the kids, I’d have Rush on noon-3 & then sometimes other radio or music on CDs, usually using the 5 CD changer w/ an eclectic mix on shuffle. I despise having the TV on all the time & tolerate it w/ hubby because he’s used to vegging w/ it after work & often just falls asleep to it as background noise.
Nothing, but sports, is usually current stuff being watched, so less agenda shoved down our throats at least. He likes Mash, Adam 12, & even sometimes The Munsters on in the background.
I was surprised to learn that my dad really enjoys the Hallmark Channel, which is major cheese to me. I guess he’s a softer soul than are the guys I’ve lived with & raised. My mom watches a lot of stuff, but it’s more like background noise as she putters around slowly getting things like cooking & sewing done. Now that my parents are in their 80’s I don’t expect much to change.
I was only home from college for the first 2 summers & then only visited at Christmas time until we’d moved back to MI & were moving from Northern MI back (for me) to Metro Detroit. I was pregnant w/ our last child & the people we bought this house from changed the possession terms for our house & so we had to Temporarily live w/ my parents for 3 months–that was Rough. We had 3 boys, age 4, & twins age 2, & me being pregnant. When we finally got access to our house there was a Bunch of stuff we had to do, paint Everything, carpet upstairs, & re-do the kitchen (all done by Us, mostly Hubby, except carpet was done professionally). That was Crazy as Michael was working FT & coming “home” to Mom & Dad’s then working at the house A Lot on evenings & weekends. I did Some of the work, designed the kitchen re-do (50% more countertop & 75% more storage space than how it was before us), & did some painting but M did the bulk of it. He installed kitchen cabinets, countertop, flooring, a dishwasher (built-in–prior owners used a portable that they hauled across the kitchen), moved the gas pipe to locate the stove in a more usable space, etc. He ran phone lines & speaker wires, did work on some light fixtures & outlets–he was & Is Amazing!!! Of course he was about 30 then, so it was A Lot easier than all of that would be now…sigh…

Notice the key aspects of the concept of WOKE are being aware and attentive to facts. Again, an attentiveness to facts. Perhaps this is the scariest part for the MAGA crowd as it is the reliance upon facts, not opinions nor matters of faith.

What Does It Mean To Be WOKE?
Setting aside the cold, hard definition, enters reality.
The term “woke” is often used to describe someone who is socially aware and conscious of issues of race, gender, class, and other forms of oppression.
In its most basic form, being woke means recognizing that there are power dynamics in place that favor certain groups over others and working to create a more equitable world. It also means understanding how these systems of power intersect with one another and how they impact the lives of individuals.
In practice, this can mean anything from advocating for marginalized communities to engaging in conversations about difficult topics such as racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. It also involves doing the hard work of self-reflection in order to understand your own privilege and how it may have contributed to these systems of oppression.
Ultimately, being woke requires an ongoing commitment to learning and growing so that you can become an effective ally to those who are oppressed while also challenging yourself to think critically about your own beliefs and behaviors.
Why Should We Embrace WOKE?
In short, because we need it now more than ever before.
With right-wing politicians using fearmongering tactics to stoke division among citizens and white supremacists becoming increasingly visible on the public stage, we must come together as allies if we want any chance at creating real social change. We must recognize our privilege (or lack thereof) in order to understand our role in dismantling oppressive structures — and we must do all this while remaining mindful of our differences in order to foster meaningful dialogue between people from different backgrounds.
In other words, being woke isn’t just a cool buzzword — it’s an essential component of meaningful social action that should be embraced rather than belittled by anyone who truly believes in equality for all people.
Does it Even Matter?
At the end of the day, calling someone “woke” is not an insult — it’s actually quite the opposite! Being woke means having the courage to challenge systems of oppression while remaining open-minded enough to recognize our own privilege or lack thereof. It’s about coming together as allies so that we can create positive change in our communities without dividing ourselves into “us” vs “them” camps. So if someone calls you ‘woke’, take it as a compliment — because you know you’re making a difference!
Apparently they wrote their own definition of “woke” and then espouse upon it.
Rest assured we have our own definition and it is not flattering at all. One born from the test of time, one that will continue to be validated day in and day out, long into the future and that is the one we will continue to espouse regardless of any attempts like the one above made to be seen as relevant and not petulant as it is.

I see it, I’m concerned about it, and it’s good to know generally what’s going on because it affects all of us, but I can’t dwell on it. I’m glad you’re watching it carefully.
The impression I get from reading here is that probably everyone realizes the seriousness of what’s happening.

Later, according to Hersh, they were involved in the battles, and Norway sold 18 more such boats to the United States, six of which were destroyed in combat.

A close friend of our family who is in her early 50s and a huge PDT fan, has worked two fund raising galas for them at Mar-a-lago – found out last week she has inoperable colon and rectal cancer. Will start a chemo treatment program in a couple of weeks. Zero health issues before. Had been doing the colon kit test for several years with negative results.
Most all of them believed they were safe as they were told. Some of them stopped after the first shots, some kept going with the boosters. What I have found around here is people did not mind telling if the were jabbed for the first year or so. Now they do. I’m detecting more and more concern and fear.
The latter, is well founded.

When he returned to his home in Darlington Township, Pennsylvania—around 1.4 miles from the crash site—Corbin discovered two surprises. Black debris that resemble ash was strewn all over his yard and on his roof, and an “undetonated blasting cap” landed in a pasture near his house.
On the evening of Feb. 3, a Norfolk Southern train carrying 151 cars derailed in East Palestine, a village of 4,761 located in eastern Ohio near the Pennsylvania border.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), “38 rail cars derailed, and a fire ensued which damaged an additional 12 cars.”
Of the cars that derailed, 11 contained hazardous materials, the NTSB said.
Seeking to avoid an explosion, Norfolk Southern decided to release and burn vinyl chloride from five rail cars, which sent flames and thick black smoke billowing into the sky once more.
Corbin believes the blasting cap, which has a wire and is filled with cotton, was used to help detonate the cars in the controlled burn.
During an initial phone conversation, the EPA said the ash on Corbin’s property was not from the derailment, Corbin said.
“Then they sent some people out, and they were astonished about what they saw,” Corbin said, adding that the EPA representatives took samples of the ash before they left.
“A few days later, some more people from the EPA stopped by and took more samples,” Corbin said. “I asked them to let me know what is in that ash before we plant our garden. We haven’t heard anything from them since.
