When The Fiancee and I were diving in tropical climes, we’d normally go around Thanksgiving….so we’d take Santa hats along and do pictures underwater wearing them. Then we’d include the pics in our Christmas cards.
If you want the hats to point straight up, just put a tiny puff of air inside before you put them on.
Even though you say “tropical”, I get chills thinking of diving right now!!! 😂
Our “home base” for diving was Monterey Bay, where the water was often in the 40s.
“Neoprene is our friend.”
One of the amusing things about SCUBA is that it never solves its problems, it merely offsets them with other problems.
For instance, it is clearly unreasonable to immerse yourself in 48-degree water. You’ll get hypothermia and die. So you wear a 7-mil wetsuit — that’s foamed neoprene seven millimeters thick over your entire body, doubled over your torso — for insulation. Mind you, this makes you look much like a seal — which is a prey animal for great white sharks and orcas — but there are more immediate issues.
If you take a 7-mil wetsuit and throw it into a pool, it will float like any other bunch of foam. Regardless of whether you personally sink or float, you are going to have to wear a bunch of weights to offset the buoyancy of your wetsuit. For me, this was typically about 34 pounds.
When you don this while on the beach, in the sun, you will cook yourself. You’re wearing a dark-colored insulated suit with no ability to sweat and cool yourself. If you try to get a dip in before fully rigged, you’re likely to tangle yourself up and drown. This is why reputable training programs go through prep and entry drills until you can do them rapidly and precisely. This also gives you the opportunity to mutter “neoprene is my friend” a few times.
In Monterey, you will also be wearing neoprene booties, gloves, and a hood. My instructor was old-time NAUI and, when I showed-up to a dive site minus a glove, had me dive it anyway. My hand was completely numb by the time I got back to shore. Wasn’t pleasant, but lesson firmly learned.
Once the initial rush of cold seawater infiltrates your suit and is clamped inside the insulation, you are about to experience the central contradiction of SCUBA, as invented by Jacques Cousteau himself. When you dive underwater, the pressure will squeeze the air in your lungs; rather than fix that, your regulator will inflate you with compressed air to compensate. If you dive to 100 feet, you can breathe easily……but if you hold your breath and go back to the surface, your lungs will want to explode and may press through and around your ribs (pulmonary barotrauma).
Which gets us to the three main rules of dive safety. (1) Never dive alone; (2) Never hold your breath; and (3) Never, Never, NEVER run out of air.
And, BTW, we’re not done with the wetsuit….. When you dive down to 60 feet, the wetsuit experiences roughly three times the pressure that it does at the surface, which means the foam is squished thinner. Being thinner, it doesn’t insulate as well, which means you get colder — and has you realize why you aren’t wearing a 4 mil wetsuit like surfers do at the surface.
Squished thinner, the wetsuit is also not as buoyant. Remember all that weight you had to carry in order to offset its buoyancy? That has not magically reduced in parallel. Instead, you get a new piece of gear — the “buoyancy compensator” or “BC” — an inflatable vest to provide the buoyancy lost as your wetsuit compressed under pressure so that it remains in balance with your weights.
Needless to say, you need to dump air from your BC as you ascend and your wetsuit expands to its former dimension or you’ll bob to the surface in an uncontrolled fashion. You’ll need to exhale the breath you inhaled while deeper or your lungs may explode. You need to keep track of your dive buddy. And you must monitor your air supply so that you are never even close to running out.
Thank you for giving me all the reasons I need to never learn SCUBA diving!
We’d go to these tropical places and the team leader would go around the circle asking about experience. People would say, “I learned last year in the Bahamas” or “I’ve been diving in Hawaii for three of the last ten years” and the leader would check to make sure they could clear their mask and understood a dive plan.
Then he’d get to us and we’d say, “we’ve been diving in Monterey five of the last six months” and he’d say, “grab your gear and go sit over there.”
You don’t have to learn SCUBA to the level of diving Monterey in order to have a reasonably safe and enjoyable experience in the tropics. OTOH, if you can dive Monterey, you are 90% of the way to doing technical dives, overhead dives, and rescue dives.
We learned from Hank Ketels, who had a NAUI instructor number in single digits — I think it was six or eight. After his course, I felt like I knew what I was doing.

At these depths, it is very important to plan your dive and dive your plan.
If your tank holds an hour of air at the surface, it holds half an hour at 30 feet; one-third of an hour at 60 feet; one quarter hour at 90 feet; and one-fifth of an hour (12 minutes) at 120 feet. And that’s if you’re breathing at the same relaxed rate at all times and you have no descent and ascent time. Oh, and your tank doesn’t really have an hour of air at the surface….
In addition, the Jado Trader is in warm clear water instead of freezing murky silt. I was looking for signs of nitrogen narcosis during the short time at the bottom, but detected none.

I can swim and I snorkeled in Jamaica. I just do not LIKE swimming. Mostly I find it cold and boring.
I learned to love snorkeling while living in Hawaii. But that is the total extent of my enjoyment.
I learned to snorkel on the big island near the king’s pond. It was so fun, but those moray eels with open mouths made my heart go fast. LOL
I learned on the Big Island, too. There were definitely some scary things in the water. But some of them were hilarious. I got “attacked” one time by a humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (a reef triggerfish), because I was apparently right on top of his “wife’s” clutch of eggs, which the male guards. It was funny because the little guy was about 8 inches long! But he was brave, I’ll say that. Right up in my face, shaking for all he was worth, until I moved on.
Considering that they bite off pieces of coral and chew them until they get the worms out, you do not want them actually biting you.

Lol, I had the same experience with turtles in Hawaii. You aren’t supposed to touch them, but they loved me for some reason. If people wanted to see turtles, they took me with them to the water. Turtles would always show up.
We went out on a boat and snorkeled with the turtles swimming around. I loved watching them.
There’s the answer to why people do it: to commune with all those amazing creatures.
Here’s a pretty spot where I’ve got a a story….
The area is Point Lobos — Point of the Wolves — originally Punto Lobos del Mar, meaning Point of the Wolves of the Sea. Having seen harbor seals in the other video, you can guess that isn’t describing seals — it’s describing sea lions.
Seals swim from place to place, but sea lions fly underwater. They do acrobatics, can stop or start on a dime, and swoop around.
The only place to successfully get in or out of the water at Point Lobos is an old boatramp at Whalers’ Cove (you can unsuccessfully enter the water by falling off a cliff). It’s a park, so there’s a park fee, and there’s a limit of how many divers can be there each day. That makes it quite a treat.
I happened to know a couple that was going out one day, and they invited me along. They were even more into diving than I was, having a little outboard boat and having written a book on nudibranchs.
So, we were out by one of the vertical walls you see in the video, and the two of them were looking closely shoulder-to-shoulder (possibly planning their next book). I was about six feet behind. This piqued the curiosity of a passing sea lion that swooped in and stuck his nose right between their heads to see what they were looking at so intently. After a couple of seconds, he pulled his head back on his extremely flexible neck, and swooped away.
When we got back to the boat, I said how delighted I was by this sea lion encounter.
Their response? “What sea lion?”
By contrast with my discussion of Monterey diving, I had two wetsuits for tropical trips — a 3/4 mil and a 1/2 mil. With the 3/4, I typically had 12 pounds of weight. I rarely used a hood or gloves — and when I did, it was for scalp sunburn or abrasion on docks.
We would dive in Monterey about once a month — maybe 10 times a year. We never had shivers about going tropical. We went to Hawaii, Fiji, Puerto Rico, and Honduras and never felt the slightest bit cold.

Back then, what would happen if you didn’t wear a cap was that your hair would part different places when you surfaced. Then, with ten minutes of tropic sun, you’d have a roasted pink part. And, of course, ears and neck.
For those who are wondering, our last dive trip was in Hawaii, where The Fiancee encountered a case of DCS (DeCompression Sickness). She was initially paralyzed to where her legs didn’t work, but two weeks of hyperbaric treatments got her back to the US where things worked. We’d do PT kicking a soccer ball up an down a field and it really hasn’t been a thing for a long while.
BUT…..
Her attending physician through this, Dr. Robert Overlock, recommended that she no longer dive. A second opinion would be just that — second — Dr. Overlock is the world’s leading authority on the subject.
I would love to be diving regularly, but my previous dive partner has been permanently sidelined.

They have a hard time keeping first-rate doctors, because the staff sucks. That’s part of it. I had a Hawaiian doc who training in Washington state and practiced there for years before returning to Hawaii, because there is such a shortage of competent doctors. She gave me an earful about her nurses and support staff. She told me, direct quote, “get your family the hell off this island!”
Less than three months later, she gave up and quit. Went back to the mainland.
The facilities I saw, including a large Honolulu hospital, were not well kept, and not very clean. I refused treatment at a dentist’s office because the floors were dirty, with dust bunnies in the corners!
I saw stuff that was gross enough that I wouldn’t even visit. I’m too afraid I might be in an accident or something, and have to seek care.
That’s seriously alarming…in America!
On one of our vacations in Hawaii, we went to the North Shore and watched surfers riding very big waves. They were amazing.

On the health front, grandson who took 1 F’in moderna jab has been plagued with innumerable health problems. He’s on daughter’s insurance but the testing costs aren’t covered totally so she’s at about $2000 owing for that.
Monday he went back in and I told him to have them check for various auto immune diseases…..more tests.

I do not think people understand the dynamics of the situation. One of the major inputs is FERTILIZER. In 2021 when Biden slapped sanctions on Russia, my hay dealer told me his fertilizer prices TRIPLED!
My neighbor across the street is a good example. The land was originally owned by a farmer that ran cattle and had several chicken houses. The chicken manure was composted and spread on the fields. Lime & some fertilizer was added. The fields were sprayed in April and he had beautiful fields of Kentucky 31 all year long. He also baled hay and rotated his cows to other fields as needed.
The fields across the street were then sold. The guy has NO chickens, thus no manure. He fertilized the fields at the beginning of the Biden years paying those tripled prices. I talked to him a few days ago and he said he would love to be able to fertilize again but the cost would not be covered by what he could get for his cows. He sell retail to the Pasture raised organic market so he gets top dollar for his beef.

So the input costs of fertilizer, fuel, & equipment have gone up. The alternative fertilizer from chickens went down thanks to avian flu AND the wholesale price paid to cattle farmers has likely stayed the same due to Monopsony. Why would cattle farmers even bother to breed cows for next year if all they were going to do is lose money AND their pastures can only support a diminished number of cows because they can not afford fertilizer?

Having worked in a feed mill that also manufactured/blended fertilizer and spread it for large farms and ranches, I totally get it.
If the ingredients go up in price, or the price of shipping it in by rail and/or truck goes up, or if a war interferes with availability, well, guess what? The cost of the fert goes up, and the cost of the meat, grain, or vegetable goes up with it.
And the prices are not coming down. For me in the last 2-3 years:
Flour has gone up 40%
Olive oil has doubled
Butter up 30%
Milk is up 25%
Cheese up 25%
Coffee is double
Those are just a few staples. Beef is ridiculous. Seriously. Chicken is up about 30%, too.

I have to admit I’ve been avoiding this story in self defense. The fury that rises up in me when I think about all the people, especially the kids, who died because of this bullshit is almost unbearable.
We have to rein in Big Pharma and Big Medicine forever at all costs. Damn them all.
Exactly. I think my wife is a victim of shedding, having passed away last Sunday.
I haven’t mentioned it, but my wife has been suffering from both a turbo cancer and the German medical system, who steadfastly refuse to use Ivermectin or anything other than Chemo and radiation. I think she’s a victim of shedding, as the Gyno and Oncologists say it was one of the most aggressive cancers they’ve ever seen. This whole misadventure started in May last year, she had a very very major OP (I think the one that Princess Kate had), and then had a round of Chemo, some radiation (around Christmas last year), and then they thought she was OK.
Nope, it came back, even more aggressive, in November of this year. She fell a few times due to weakness, and a tumor attacking nerves and muscles, went into the hospital the 19th of November, and passed away on the 7th December (2te. Advent).
I’ve never been present when someone has passed away, but I was afraid of what it would be like. But she was a strong, faithful, devout Christian, and I am absolutely sure she is SAVED! and that Jesus welcomed her into HEAVEN saying “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy LORD.” (Matt. 25:21). My son and brother-in-law and I were there with her when she died. She died peacefully, opened her eyes, recognized us, and then passed into Jesus’s arms.
We were called by the hospital on the 6th, saying that she was going downhill fast and that we should come in, which we did. The doctors reviewed her condition with us, and the usual heroic measures, etc. discussion. My wife had already said she didn’t want that, and that was emphasized (by her) when they went to put the high-flow O² nose plugs back on and she all but yelled “NAY!!!” (no). My son said he wanted at least one more day (indeed we all wanted complete and total recovery) and that he never had a chance to say goodbye.
The next day, the 7th, we went in, and she passed peacefully, and when she opened her eyes and recognized us, and our son, by GOD’S INFINITE GRACE, we were able to say goodbye.
My son and I are still in shock; disappointed in the German Health System’s reluctance to use Ivermectin or anything else but the tradition (and ineffective at best) Chemo and radiation. Having said that, the doctors and nurses and everyone did all that they could do within the boundaries in which they have to work.
My son back in 2007 was clinically dead for a total of 15 minutes (in three resuscitations, the longest “off” time being 10 minutes) because of prolonged (15 hours) WPW ending up with an EF of 10, and an enlarged heart. In his case, a miracle happened, and with a number of meds and “reverse remodeling”, his heart is at normal size and function. He still takes a small dose of beta blockers and Enalapril and 200mg or so of Q-10, which really helped.
So, in his experience, he was hoping for a similar miracle for her, but GOD had other plans which we’ll understand when we meet the LORD.
Right now I have a huge hole in my life, as does my son, but I trust GOD will Help, Bless, Comfort, Strengthen, and Guide us. And my wife is with Jesus now, with no more pain, no more tears, an immortal body fit for ETERNITY in HEAVEN, and with all the saints. It is really comforting knowing that she was a great Christian, a great wife, and loving mother. My son and I have been richly blessed… and we’ll see her again…

Like you surmise in your wife’s case I also think shedding contributed to my mother’s sudden decline & precipitous death earlier this year. The night before she passed my dad said that she was peaceful in bed, without the agitation that had plagued her for some days. He was convinced that God was going to raise her up with healing in this life, but just like with your wife God’s complete healing was instead going to manifest in eternity.
May He sustain you in the coming days through all the events, memories, & sorrow at your beloved’s passing. That Hope of being reunited in Glory is something to cling to when loss weighs heavily. God guide you through it all…

(Cuppa here) Rodney asked where I was the other day, but I didn’t reply at the time.
I haven’t mentioned it, but my wife has been suffering from both a turbo cancer and the German medical system, who steadfastly refuse to use Ivermectin or anything other than Chemo and radiation. I think she’s a victim of shedding, as the Gyno and Oncologists say it was one of the most aggressive cancers they’ve ever seen. This whole misadventure started in May last year, she had a very very major OP (I think the one that Princess Kate had), and then had a round of Chemo, some radiation (around Christmas last year), and then they thought she was OK.
Nope, it came back, even more aggressive, in November of this year. She fell a few times due to weakness, and a tumor attacking nerves and muscles, went into the hospital the 19th of November, and passed away on the 7th December (2te. Advent).
I’ve never been present when someone has passed away, but I was afraid of what it would be like. But she was a strong, faithful, devout Christian, and I am absolutely sure she is SAVED! and that Jesus welcomed her into HEAVEN saying “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy LORD.” (Matt. 25:21). My son and brother-in-law and I were there with her when she died. She died peacefully, opened her eyes, recognized us, and then passed into Jesus’s arms.
We were called by the hospital on the 6th, saying that she was going downhill fast and that we should come in, which we did. The doctors reviewed her condition with us, and the usual heroic measures, etc. discussion. My wife had already said she didn’t want that, and that was emphasized (by her) when they went to put the high-flow O² nose plugs back on and she all but yelled “NAY!!!” (no). My son said he wanted at least one more day (indeed we all wanted complete and total recovery) and that he never had a chance to say goodbye.
The next day, the 7th, we went in, and she passed peacefully, and when she opened her eyes and recognized us, and our son, by GOD’S INFINITE GRACE, we were able to say goodbye.
My son and I are still in shock; disappointed in the German Health System’s reluctance to use Ivermectin or anything else but the tradition (and ineffective at best) Chemo and radiation. Having said that, the doctors and nurses and everyone did all that they could do within the boundaries in which they have to work.
My son back in 2007 was clinically dead for a total of 15 minutes (in three resuscitations, the longest “off” time being 10 minutes) because of prolonged (15 hours) WPW ending up with an EF of 10, and an enlarged heart. In his case, a miracle happened, and with a number of meds and “reverse remodeling”, his heart is at normal size and function. He still takes a small dose of beta blockers and Enalapril and 200mg or so of Q-10, which really helped.
So, in his experience, he was hoping for a similar miracle for her, but GOD had other plans which we’ll understand when we meet the LORD.
Right now I have a huge hole in my life, as does my son, but I trust GOD will Help, Bless, Comfort, Strengthen, and Guide us. And my wife is with Jesus now, with no more pain, no more tears, an immortal body fit for ETERNITY in HEAVEN, and with all the saints. It is really comforting knowing that she was a great Christian, a great wife, and loving mother. My son and I have been richly blessed… and we’ll see her again…
That’s sad. God bless him in his grief, and give him comfort. The loss is his, but she has gained everything.

Remdesivir, certain other drugs, ventilators, etc., are choices for COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

And there’s the Pontius Pilate-style language: the patient must be unable to participate in a clinical trial of a drug that is being tested for treatment of his/her condition. NOT that the patient wants to, for example, try an alternative treatment protocol that uses Ivermectin, and wants to do this under Right to Try. It seems that the patient would literally have to go through a physician to find, for example, a clinical trial testing the use of Ivermectin for, say, lung cancer, and then have that physician sign off that the patient is unable to participate in the clinical trial.
THIS ENTIRE SITUATION IS GOVERNMENT AND “ESTABLISHMENT MEDICINE” TAKING CONTROL OVER THE PATIENT AND “PERMITTING” OR “NOT PERMITTING” THE PATIENT TO TRY ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS UNLESS THAT PATIENT JUMPS THROUGH THE MULTIPLE HOOPS THAT GOVERNMENT AND “ESTABLISHMENT MEDICINE” PUT UP.

Unfortunately, you have to buy it yourself and treat yourself, as I did with my cancer. That also means that too many people don’t even know that there are alternatives.
About using it for heartworm treatment for dogs: up until a few years ago, ivermectin was in heartworm pills. The ones my dog used to get had ivermectin in them. But they found out that for collies and a few other dogs, that they were dangerous. I think at that point, most vets started using alternatives.
