The basic underlying way of communicating with a UNIX (POSIX, BSD, Linux, etc.) system is a thing called a “shell”. It throws a prompt onto a terminal and reads what you type.
It then searches parts of your system for a command in what you typed. The places it looks are found in a variable called $PATH, in order. Currently mine looks like: “/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/snap/bin”. When it gets a hit, it runs that command — even if the same command could be found in a later place…..this allows you to have custom versions of common commands — you just put them in $PATH in an earlier search area. You will note that /bin is comfortably in the middle of that list — that’s so all the /usr versions override the factory settings. [/bin refers to “binaries” — actual program files; /usr refers to “users” — custom files not acquired as a package.]
That’s how UNIX (the great grandaddy) worked using the original “sh” shell. As with everything else, however, it didn’t just end there. When I first hit UNIX in the early ’80s, the system defaulted to “csh”, the C shell. Up and coming was “ksh”, the Korn shell. The current default shell pretty much anywhere is “bash”, the Bourne-Again SHell [Bourne was the original author of “sh” — a startling number of commands include inside jokes].
Some of the optimizations in bash involve certain commands being executed by the shell itself without looking at $PATH at all. These would include things like cd, ls, and cat.
So even though /usr/bin/cat would ordinarily be a local-override program for the cat program using the general scheme……it would likely now just execute the normal cat function directly from the bash shell without hitting the $PATH. If you really wanted to use a custom cat program, you could use “alias” to turn “cat” into “bafflegab”, then put “bafflegab” into /usr/bin…or, what the heck, just run a different shell that doesn’t have cat as a built-in shell command.

The Korn Shell is named after its creator, David Korn. There is the play on words there though. Just as the C Shell is pronounced like sea-shell, Korn and corn sound the same, so this is pronounced as corn-shell. And then there of course there is the Bourne-again shell. Pun-o-rama really…
The kernel is something else. That code is the central part of the operating system that manages the memory, CPU, connected devices and all other such resources for use by all the other programs that run outside the kernel in «userland», and communicates with it through a set of system calls. These shell programs are amongst these. The executable files, the actual program files, are located in the various «bin» directories. (/bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, ….). Which goes where is a matter of provenance and history. Notably, a lot of the more recent Debian systems have decided to make /bin and /usr/bin the same, so any shell or other program looking for a file in one of them will find it in either.

Not that I’m any expert, but there are quite a few *different* types of “judges” in the system, and exactly what titles they carry is another complication.
Justices, (real) judges, and *magistrates*, the last of which are merely administrators, rather than bona fide judges of the law.
In our current procedural configuration, juries determine facts from the evidence presented at trial.
Juries really only recommend … but … it’s the court [judge] that accepts or rejects the verdict. However, the verdict does control unless the defense makes a motion to set it aside [the judge can make that motion if an error is so obvious]. Such a motion must present sufficient evidence to support the legal basis for the motion.
The setting aside is not the end of it. As with all trial court actions, it is subject to appeal. Unless one is stuck with a Soros prosecutor – who just doesn’t bother taking an appeal or takes one and does sloppy work on it.
Ultimately, setting aside is rooted in the need for the conviction of the defendant to be within the confines of the constitution. As with any rule, it can be misused.

As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice. And the Department of War — and the American people — expect justice.
Therefore, in response to Senator Mark Kelly’s seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct — the Department of War is taking administrative action against Captain Mark E. Kelly, USN (Ret). The department has initiated retirement grade determination proceedings under 10 U.S.C. § 1370(f), with reduction in his retired grade resulting in a corresponding reduction in retired pay.
To ensure this action, the Secretary of War has also issued a formal Letter of Censure, which outlines the totality of Captain (for now) Kelly’s reckless misconduct. This Censure is a necessary process step, and will be placed in Captain Kelly’s official and permanent military personnel file.
Captain Kelly has been provided notice of the basis for this action and has thirty days to submit a response. The retirement grade determination process directed by Secretary Hegseth will be completed within forty five days.
Captain Kelly’s status as a sitting United States Senator does not exempt him from accountability, and further violations could result in further action.
These actions are based on Captain Kelly’s public statements from June through December 2025 in which he characterized lawful military operations as illegal and counseled members of the Armed Forces to refuse lawful orders. This conduct was seditious in nature and violated Articles 133 and 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, to which Captain Kelly remains subject as a retired officer receiving pay.

Six weeks ago, Senator Mark Kelly — and five other members of Congress — released a reckless and seditious video that was clearly intended to undermine good order and military discipline. As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice. And the Department of War — and the American people — expect justice.
Therefore, in response to Senator Mark Kelly’s seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct — the Department of War is taking administrative action against Captain Mark E. Kelly, USN (Ret). The department has initiated retirement grade determination proceedings under 10 U.S.C. § 1370(f), with reduction in his retired grade resulting in a corresponding reduction in retired pay.
To ensure this action, the Secretary of War has also issued a formal Letter of Censure, which outlines the totality of Captain (for now) Kelly’s reckless misconduct. This Censure is a necessary process step, and will be placed in Captain Kelly’s official and permanent military personnel file.
Captain Kelly has been provided notice of the basis for this action and has thirty days to submit a response. The retirement grade determination process directed by Secretary Hegseth will be completed within forty five days.
Captain Kelly’s status as a sitting United States Senator does not exempt him from accountability, and further violations could result in further action.
These actions are based on Captain Kelly’s public statements from June through December 2025 in which he characterized lawful military operations as illegal and counseled members of the Armed Forces to refuse lawful orders. This conduct was seditious in nature and violated Articles 133 and 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, to which Captain Kelly remains subject as a retired officer receiving pay.

Having financed a zillion lodging facilities with franchises as these are reported to be – the franchisee must follow the provisions of their franchise agreements. I can guarantee you they violated those agreements in some way as the franchisor is entitled to royalty payments on all room rents. So refusal to rent that is documented means the franchisee is on the hook to pay the franchisor for lost revenue as well as being subject to any other violations they may have committed.
So Hilton and Marriott cannot hide behind a “them” and “not us” excuse. If they do not do something about it they are subject to being blacklisted by the federal government – which would kick them in the azz on revenues and probably subjects them to visits from GSA among other agencies.
Marriott owns a bazillion hotels and theres always a gov5 need for training and more, not even for sworn leo, just admin. Tha5s a ton of lost revenue.
Daily, thousands if not tens of thousands of rooms at Hilton family hotels AND Marriott family hotels are occupied by federal employees.

Hilton Hotels corporate office has responded saying they’re open to business for anyone, (presumably including ICE agents,) and that they’re investigating the independently operated MN Hampton Inn which refused service to DHS/ICE employees.
I’m guessing the MN Hampton Inn bought a franchise license so they could put the name “Hilton” on their property. And if Corporate Hilton is investigating, we should see a notice of the Hampton Inn franchise license being pulled quite soon.
Believe that most of the Hilton properties I’ve stayed at, are franchised, owned by some company.

Honestly, I’m more concerned about my own free speech [which many would say is “false”] being harmed by this, than about Candace Owens, with whom I may disagree, being punished. It’s MY free speech at risk. In fact, I have to wonder if British leftists and imperialists cooked up the whole Candace Owens fame in order to attack American free speech.
Bullying – meaning literally harassing a person personally – is one thing. Stalking them, annoying them, etc. – yeah, I get that as a punishable act, too. Defamation – when KNOWN lies are stated – yeah, that’s a thing that is not protected speech. But speculating strongly about hidden truths where evidence is NOT provided to the public – well, we do that. Even doing that, and being WRONG, and even not believing evidence that comes back – all of that should be protected speech, IMO.

If that were affecting your ability to get and hold a job, your relationships with colleagues and neighbors, your ability to live where you choose, your safety and that of your family, etc., would that be okay? What I have described is stealing your life from you. Is there a point where someone’s freedom to speak untruths and idiocy is abridged before they destroy your quality of life?
I agree. What I don’t agree with is harrassing someone to the point that their entire life changes, that their spouse’s life changes, in ways that affect their entire family, to the point that their reputation is damaged beyond repair just because some people want to believe the worst. It is stealing. If the allegations are not true, then people have asserted, wrongly, who the “victim” is. Brigitte is having to endure being told by some upstart who has no regard for truth, who Brigitte is. It’s outrageous. In a sense it is identity theft.
It’s one thing to state what is on one’s mind and to ask questions, but IMO there is a point where it crosses the line into stealing someone’s life. You might disagree, but I do not believe that affecting someone’s reputation, peace of mind, and ability to live without such made-up allegations hanging over their head should be allowed. Somebody recently shared a video that showed someone bouncing on the moon. iirc they had anticipated several feet of moon dust due to “millions of years” of existence. What they encountered was minimal dust, like from Perhaps just a few thousand years of cosmic bombardment 🙂
