Present with the Lord
In 2 Corinthians 5:8, the apostle Paul writes, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”. The expression absent from the body refers to physical death. When this life ends, believers will be immediately ushered into the glorious presence of the Lord. Then we will see Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). And, at that moment, we will be “present with the Lord.”
To fully appreciate the significance of 2 Corinthians 5:8, it is important for us to review the immediate context. In 2 Corinthians 5:1–7, Paul contrasts the temporary nature of our earthly bodies with the eternal nature of our heavenly bodies. Once our earthly bodies are destroyed, “we have . . . an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands” (verse 1). Most translations of 2 Corinthians 5:8 emphasize the aspect of having an “eternal house,” saying that, at death we will be “at home with the Lord”.
In our earthly state, we earnestly desire “to be clothed . . . with our heavenly dwelling” (2 Corinthians 5:2), which will not leave us “naked” or without a dwelling place (verse 3). Our heavenly bodies will not be subject to decay or death (mortality). Instead, we will receive new bodies that are imperishable and immortal (verse 4; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:54). We know that God has prepared a heavenly home for us (John 14:2) because He “has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 5:5; cf. Romans 5:5 and Ephesians 1:14). Currently, the presence of God is a matter of faith (Hebrews 11:1) because we are “at home in the body” and “away from the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6). So, right now, “we live by faith, not by sight” (verse 7). It is in this context that Paul writes, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (verse 8).
Physically, we cannot be in two places at the same time. If we are present in this world, we are absent from the ranks of heaven. But, for us believers in Christ, when we are absent from this world, we will be present with the Lord. We will have arrived at our true home. In the words of James M. Black, “When all of life is over and our work on earth is done, / And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there” (1893).
Paul longed for the day when his sin-corrupted body would be replaced with a glorified one. For this reason, he viewed trials and tribulations as “light and momentary troubles” that could not be compared to “an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17; cf. Romans 8:18). This hope for an incorruptible body and eternal dwelling place gives us confidence in the face of suffering, as we know that our salvation is eternally secure (John 10:28–29).
Because Paul was confident of his eternal destiny, he was not afraid to die (1 Corinthians 15:54–55). In fact, he welcomed death because he knew that he would be present with the Lord. In Philippians 1:21–24 he expresses a similar thought: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.” This does not mean that Paul had a death wish. On the contrary, he was expressing confidence that death is not final, especially for Christians. Death is simply a transition into a glorious heavenly body. Therefore, we should not fear anything or anyone (Isaiah 25:8; Matthew 10:28).
Second Corinthians 5:8 reminds believers that our ultimate home is not in this world, but in heaven. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Hence, we are called to be in the world but not of the world (Romans 12:2). As heavenly citizens, our allegiance is to God, not the world: “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:20–21). When Christ returns, our earthly bodies will be exchanged for bodies fit for heaven.
The hope of eternal life is the bedrock of Christianity. Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we know that death is not the end. And if we believe in Him for salvation from our sins, then we will live with Him in heaven (Romans 6:1). We will be present with the Lord and also reunited with loved ones who have passed away before us. This hope is not based on wishful thinking or blind faith but on the promises of God revealed in Scripture.

I went to a Celtic Festival in Montana a few years ago. They have Scottish Highland games, and food, and events, a Highland pipe band, all kinds of things.
I was watching this event where a man uses a pitchfork to hurl a big heavy bag way up over a crossbar. He was wearing a kilt; of course he was, lol.
Anyway, as the guy hefted the bag and swung the pitchfork back for his throw, the handle of the fork caught his kilt. When he pitched the bag over, whoo-wee! There was a cute, fuzzy Scottish ass, bare to the breeze!

Thank you, Pat! I grew up at the edge of town and did not have other kids to play very often. So I developed a busy mind and am never bored. I do have one patent (assigned to Dell who asked us to submit ideas). Tracer cables. Squeeze one and it lights up so you can follow it across a computer lab’s cable racks and more easily find where it connects at the other end. LOL It was sort of like inventing Christmas tree lights. 😅

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

It doesn’t take too much thought to imagine that the hole would sooner-or-later get filled-up. At this point, a new hole would be constructed and the shed (which was often mounted on a sled-like platform) would be moved to the new hole. The old hole would then be covered over with dirt.
Being that the structure would need to be moved every few years, it would tend to be a simple, lightweight structure. That’s why building one out of brick would be seen as extravagant….and, thus, an extravagantly constructed woman would be noted to be “built like a brick shithouse.”
On a side note, my father and my uncle took two trips in the early 70s to improve my grandfather’s house. The first trip replaced the original coal stove with a piped-in gas furnace. The second trip replaced the outhouse with a flush toilet.

Sexual activity used to be pretty strictly limited and regimented by society, religion, and even the law. Now it is a free-for-all.
Those limits were imposed for good reason. Sex releases oxytocin and dopamine in the brain. Sex can be addictive. People with addictions are unpredictable, at best. And society used to know it.
An obsession with a sex object can lead to all kinds of destructive behaviors. Another chemical released in the brain during sex, vasopressin, leads to attachment and bonding. Maybe a minor point, maybe not, but the “magic” referred to here is a game called “Magic: The Gathering.”
It’s a card game, a lot like the old school Dungeons and Dragons. It’s a fantasy world thing, with all kinds of lore and details. My sons play it; all their friends are into it. It’s been around for years.
If you notice, when you read the account from the guy, the “magic nights” were pretty standard “bro fare” disrupted by Lance’s craziness. They stopped having the game nights for a while because of it. At one point, one of the “autistic friends” at the game tried to bring up transgenders in sports, and Lance freaked out. The game got “awkward” after that. The guys were trying to stop the autist from continuing, because they knew Lance would lose it. These kids have been coerced all their lives into tolerating and protecting the weirdest of the weird (Lance types) by the school system and society in general. But it is wearing very thin for them.
Magic: The Gathering is pretty standard “dude” fare now, almost like have a poker night. They tolerate people like Lance, to a point. But eventually the guys like him are relegated to the sidelines. So Tyler, in the thrall of sex with a deviant, was probably being shunted to the sidelines, too.
The whole dynamic is a recipe for Tyler to crack, which he did.
First, yes, I was aware that it was just “Magic, The Gathering”. We made crafts, essential oils, and yes, occasionally, “spells.” Which now, having studied and understood what spellwork actually is, were hilarious, harmless, and stupid.
However, there was one of the group…
She had close contact with another group that was much more “real.” And she liked me. Which at the time seemed relatively harmless, as I was oblivious as I usually am. If you live in the light, darkness can seem far away. But it isn’t.
This other group was dark stuff. I met a few over the years, and man, could you feel the evil. But the thing is, they had their “airy-fairy” representatives to meet-and-greet the public, so the scary ones remained mostly hidden away. The “front” handled people; I honestly don’t know if they were aware of the darkness they worked for, or if they were literally “enthralled.”
Anyway, I realize now, much later, that I was under scrutiny for many years as a “potential.” I eventually put two and two together and fled the entire group, even the fringe women, but over the years I heard enough to backtrack and understand what I was really dealing with.
I know now that they would have never, ever, let me in to the “inner circle” (again, thank you Jesus), because I had been baptized a Christian, and even though I had wandered away, I belonged in Jesus’s hand. I would not accept the premise that there are gods who are equal to and just as powerful as the Creator, and I never would have. That is a prerequisite, for sure. I’m not seeing any useful projects on that table. Even little bits that hint at more than making basic connections to a computer. I’m not sure he was successful at anything beyond plugging in USB.
That table could be a dumping ground, but if I take the witness at his word, and look at some items like Lego, pebbles, tubes, the empty terrarium, and the pad of scribbled post-it notes, I’m thinking his projects/experiments were 90% pot dreaming and 10% fondling of materials and “thinking”. A real experimenter (much like a builder) does spend a certain amount of time “thinking and fondling materials” – thinking about how to tackle a problem with tools and materials – but pot and alcohol are never part of that process, certainly not a helpful one, other than perhaps celebrating success at the end.

I will say unfortunately I had to have a new roof put on earlier in the week and the crew was all hispanic, no English. They were great, the most in sync with what each one did and they did it well and fast. The foreman and sales supervisor didn’t have to micromanage. We were about to call an end to these trips. But Daughter would not hear of it and the grandkids started working us over so they could have a fall beach trip with us.
Then a few years ago, we met a retired couple from Indianapolis who bought a place here about the same time we started coming decades ago. We were staying in a unit above them. Instant friendship with so much in common including our faiths. Now, both of us as couples cannot imagine missing our time to visit with one another each fall as long as we have our health. The hillbillies and midwesterners having a high time in the lowcountry. lol.
