How a DNA Testing Kit Revealed a Family Secret Hidden for 54 Years

One evening in the winter of 2016, my husband mentioned that he was sending away for one of those commercial DNA-testing kits. He asked if I wanted him to order me one as well. I could easily have said no. I wasn’t curious about my ancestry. I knew where I came from–Eastern European Ashkenazi Jews on both my parents’ sides. Instead, I said yes. Why not? It seemed like a game–like those personality tests people often take online.
The results, when I received them a few months later, changed everything I had ever understood about myself. I was only half Eastern European Ashkenazi, as it turned out. A person I had never heard of was identified as a first cousin. The truth was unavoidable. My beloved father, who died in a car accident when I was 23, had not been my biological father.
This discovery led me deep into a world I had known nothing about: the history, science and psychological underpinnings of assisted reproduction. I have spent the past few years piecing together the story of how I came to be, the truth of where (and who) I come from–and the ways in which my identity was scrupulously hidden from me.
I think all these DNA results are going into a big data base somewhere.
People should be getting paid for submitting their samples to be tested…not paying for it themselves.
Question is, what will ‘They’ use all that DNA data for?
The commercials for these DNA kits make it seem like it’s “cool” to get your DNA tested.
Like you’ll be a member of the ‘cool crowd’ if you do it…and behind-the-times if you don’t.
And apparently, people are falling for it.
That is my concern also.
It would be great to find out information about your own background.
It’s not so great that the information will also be in the hands of who knows how many other corporations and individuals, and however they will MONETIZE your DNA data.
If they were truly serious about your privacy, if they wanted to alleviate privacy concerns, to practically REMOVE that overwhelming concern from their worldwide potential customer base, they would:
1) include language in the application/contract stating that if your data is ever hacked, sold or otherwise compromised or used without the donor’s written consent, the Company will voluntarily compensate each and every individual with $5,000,000 (2019, adjusted annually to keep pace with inflation) if security of their data is ever breached.
2) Further, as security for this guarantee, the Company is fully insured with Lloyd’s of London. Every applicant is added as a designated Beneficiary/Payee on that Policy, and each applicant receives written certification to that effect, with an already reserved claim number.
They literally have to make the payoff SO GOOD in the event of a compromise to your data that people HOPE the data is compromised. That is how you get just about everyone on the planet to ‘opt in’.
I might consider doing it, with that kind of guaranteed assurance.
But probably not!
I’m not sure we can even envision all of the sinister ways that this DNA data could be used.
Planting false evidence comes to mind. As do all kinds of medical denials for treatment when we begin rationing. They can probably already manipulate the DNA or change it slightly fir desired results.

Just had this conversation with my wife and mother last night. Mom says,”but they could personalize medications for people”, and other good stuff. All I can think of is the data bases and the evil ways this could be used. Don’t get me wrong, I think the idea of finding out where you come from is pretty neat, but the flip side is terrifying.
but that’s scary in and of itself–“personalize medication”…because if it’s only intended for you, they could also change it just enough to kill just you too…scary these days that it’s so hard to know who to trust about anything…

Back after the crash of FLT 2185 shortly after lifting off from a refuel in Nova Scotia, 248 soldiers from Ft. Campbell, Ky and eight crew members were killed while returning from a rotation in the Sinai Peninsula in the Middle East. Part of the fall out from that event were mandatory dental panarex (sic) for every one in the military along with a mandatory DNA sample being given, both for the said purposes of future identification of deceased in the case of similar incident.
There was much talk in the ranks about the DNA sample and what could be gleaned from it or how it might be used.
Essentially the Military and anyone with access to Mil personnel records files (201 File) plus the DNA had the whole military population to examine as far as;
Your GT score (intelligence).
Your PT tests. (Physical Strength/Agility)
Height and Weight Data.
Language aptitude.
Vision/Hearing tests.
Any other tests or accomplishments that would show up in your official file be they from civilian life or mil. (Any type of Collage tests such as SAT, ACT, GRE, and the list goes on. )
Schools passed (Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces, Navy Seals, Delta etc…)
Flight Test Data if you were a pilot.
Even past criminal records (and yes we had many un-convicted and convicted drug users, bank robbers, rapists, thugs of all class tossed to us by a judge doing just fine in the military with annotations of such in their military personal record (201 file).
They had everything about you plus your DNA. And that’s what we theorized about in the barracks back in 1985. And they haven’t stopped taking DNA since.

Wheatie, the wife of one of the big Silicon Valley tech dudes is the CEO of 23 and me. I forget which one. And you can bet your bottom dollar our DNA is being accumulated and profiled and stored. What is really creepy is that now familial DNA testing is so good and accurate that even if I scrupulously avoid ever getting mine on file, some obscure family member out there could be sending their DNA in even as I write this.
I watch tons of Forensic Files and stuff like that and of course I appreciate DNA for the crime solving technique that it is, but it is also extremely intrusive and I hate like heck all the information they get about you from it. Oh boy, we can tell from your genetic profile that cilantro tastes bitter to you, that you don’t tolerate caffeine well, that you are lactose intolerant, blah blah blah.
And now they are making rapid inroads into using DNA to determine what you look like. That should be very viable within a few years if it isn’t already.
And yeah, what WILL Mrs. Google (or whoever she is married to) do with all that data? Huh. Let me put my thinking cap on….Somehow I bet China ends up with it.

Heh, my sister in law, who happens to be a LIVLIB (Low information voting liberal) gave the family kits a few years ago for Christmas. She was surprised, annoyed this past visit to learn we hadn’t used ours.
My wife, slightly mocking me, explained the I didn’t want my DNA in the hands of some multinational corporation to sell or do what they wish to my genetic code….of course my SIL scoffed about how paranoid I am….heh.
But these same people are probably (and rightly so) up in arms about something a trivial in comparison as your personal purchasing history being sold.
I’m sure they’d be upset if your health provider sold their medical history, guess they don’t realize their DNA IS their medical history x1000.

Last night on Tucker Carlson Tonight, right at the end of his show, he had Dave Rubin on (who I THINK is a lefty or former lefty who discovered the Party left him behind, not really sure) who has a website/does podcasts.
Anyway, Tucker had him on because he and Jordan Peterson (the Canadian) have made a public announcement about leaving Patreon. Dave said he gets 70 percent of his donations (income) through Patreon, but he is putting together a replacement for Patreon.
Dave says we have to fight back against the control of Silicon Valley and if we don’t do it now it will be too late. So he decided to take the big risk and jump ship and try to make a service that just performs the task without caving to the SJW demands that clog up everything.

i don[‘t want to waste a lot of people’s time – but just an fyi – all these things that people have discussed in this dna thread – every single one of those “fears” you have, all of them have already happened.
all the data is going into databases. universities and research institutes already can access the data via a subscription to the services – law “enforcement” and intelligence agencies get it because of who they are naturally. they “claim” that it’s just for research, and that in no way can it be linked back to the “donor” by name, but each sample is identifiable at one point or another (you bought it somehow and the origin knows of who it belongs to) but i have seen and read where it takes little to no time for people to find out who the dna belongs to.
if your family has done it you are screwed because, well, you know how dna works.
case in point – already been used to catch a criminal – happened in california last year it was reported a guy that committed a crime in the 70’s or 80’s, his brother happened to do the ancestory or 23 and me thing and suddenly they matched the dna to the crime (how? well, think about it if you still believe it’s not already being used) they praised this use of the technology and how great it is to bring closure to the family of the crime victims and LOOK! the bad guy got caught…they also stated it’s kinda creepy but BAD GUY GOT CAUGHT so in that case it is ok.
also, they will use this in your “personal permanent file” just like your fingerprints if you have ever given them (they have most children’s fingerprints that are under the age of 25 right now anyway from those “kidnap scare” id cards with photos they do in schools when you get class pictures or just as a “public service” – trust me if your kid has been in public school in the last 20 years they have their pictures and fingerprints. license photos go to facial recognition – the “RealID” thing mandated will take that even farther (they have enough now, but the realID just makes it much more reliable data) meanwhile illegals don’t even need any ID. we give away all our info – and we pay for the illegals who have no info.

As a former banker and mortgage lender, the Dodd-Frank Act required me to be registered around 2012. So I had to be fingerprinted, palm printed and have a retina scan with facial recognition to basically keep my job. I am in the SYSTEM. I had the DNA test knowing they had me anyway.

The context of the complete passage also makes a difference, IMO.
There is NO consistency to progressive ideology. It morphs continuously, camouflaging something that is obvious wrong like a chameleon into something that people don’t recognize, or better yet, think is cute and cuddly as an adoptable pet. The more they distort and recreate themselves, they take on a life of their own.
Income inequality is a perfect example of Marxism being reheated to sound like modern economics with the “Gini Coefficient”. The model assumes a zero sum game where all economic value is fixed. The only way to have “economic justice” with “income inequality” is to ensure that everyone has the same amount. But the only way to achieve that goal is to reduce all the high incomes until they match the lowest income. Talk about a gamed system – the only “justice” is for nobody to have nuthin!
Much more important is “Income Mobility” – the ability of people in the lowest brackets of income inequality to move to higher brackets. There is a high degree of economic dynamism in the United States (ie, not a fixed “zero sum” system) that allows the poorest of people to move over time to better economic positions. (Conversely, the richest of the rich is also highly dynamic, as the highly wealthy rarely stay in the highest economic brackets for more than a few years.) This is critical because “income mobility” is what allows for people to have different and positive economic outcomes, where focusing on “income inequality” reframes economic conversations into the inherent “injustice” of having any wealth(!) at all.
This is where the MAGA effect of the Trump economy is incredible. The prior administration lectured us about our “shared responsibility” in addressing “income inequality” and the need for “economic justice”. The result was a wrenching and squeezing out of the middle class in the United States, gutting it out, and leaving millennials locked out of the economic system. Now here comes Trump, and he’s reversing all this dogmatic rhetoric with a focus on “jobs” and “opportunities” – because the best anti-poverty tool that exists is called a J-O-B (Can I get an “AMEN”?) and having J-O-B’s where labor is in high demand and wages INCREASE!
(Seriously – how can these people look in the mirror and live with themselves when they mutter on about how they care about the poor and “income inequality” and “economic justice” when they are keeping the poor trapped in a plantation with no economic prospects? My best guess is they are either rationally clueless about the damage they are doing and think only with their emotions, or they have psychopathic traits where they don’t care about others at all but virtue signal strictly as a means to power, having no conscience whatsoever.)
For all the prior administrations hand-wringing and finger-wagging about income inequality, for eight years they did NOTHING that would move the needle of OUTCOMES in the positive direction. Just the opposite, they made the problems phenomenally worse, and rewarded the richest of the rich for their support of the Democrat party! Think of it: The party of OWS and opposing the 1% was privately giving those same 1% massive benefits, with the payoff being donor dollars during the election!
In two years, Trump has done more to improve REAL OUTCOMES for the poor and middle class than the entire eight years of the prior administration. For that matter, for administration going back to at least 1988 – which means 30 years of economic policy and pretty-sounding rhetoric about helping the poor has been completely a load of BALONEY compared with just two years in setting the economic policy straight for American workers.
In short:
-> Trump cares about the poor and underemployed, and delivers for them.
-> Measuring from policy decisions and outcomes, no other recent administration did.
-> The prior administration, AT BEST, must be regarded as incompetent and hypocritical in the extreme, as delivering positive outcomes for the poor was NEVER a policy priority.
Personally, I think you either have to be ignorant or a sociopath to be a Marxist. I’m sure all the Marxist politicians know this quite well, and don’t really care. All the pretty rhetoric is just to get them elected. People who pay attention know that they’re all the worst kind of liars.

Can’t help but think about the biodiesel tank shell games that led to recent indictments. Or that as I read about Derwick and Fusion GPS’ corrupt delivery of turbines to Venezuela, I wondering where they were sourcing their reconditioned turbines, and were these types of projects motivating the decommissioning of certain US power plants for claimed environmental reasons? How many US power plants are in the process of being decommissined, parted out, and sold to other countries?
This is the business model that dismanted and shipped out the US manufacturing base. “Leap frogging technology”, always such cute, cuddley language for their “creative destruction”. I’ll bet that this report is filled with it.

Once sat in a graduate seminar with a professor advocating for an alternative to tabula rasa. He argued for a “sub-urbanist manifesto” as opposed to a “manifesto for Manhattanism”. My research in this seminar is what brought me to this place.
There are some fundamental problems that exist in EVERY economic system:
* People are principle actors in the system
* People are sinners
* Sinners gunna sin
* Sinners will always be greedy regardless of the economic system
* No economic system can eliminate sin, only mitigate it
* There will always be people (sinners) whose only intention is to manipulate the system they are in to their own advantage. Which is to say, there will always be corruption.
No amount of window dressing or pie in the sky dreaming about the perfect economic system is going to resolve these fundamental constraints.

There is so much economic ignorance and false information in the public arena, anything we can do to improve people’s economic literacy is good.
The whole lot about “economic inequality” is a huge talking point among the SJW left. If you accept their premises uncritically it sounds correct. But the reality is that America has always been the land of economic opportunity, of “economic mobility”, where even the poorest immigrant can build and become wealthy. This is dynamite to the left’s notions of how to resolve the problem of poverty.
I would ask anyone reading this to spread the word. Every small conversation you have is the opportunity to influence a mind.

I don’t know how this stuff works, I am pretty sure the House has to propose taxes, but it would seem to me there should be some clever way for the federal government to impose a healthy fee on these remittances. LAS VEGAS—Police in Las Vegas said Jan. 3 they have finished releasing audio, video and written records about the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history 15 months ago during an open-air concert.
The department said that after 34 releases of material since May, officials believe they have complied with a court order in a public records lawsuit about the Oct. 1, 2017, shooting. Plaintiffs included The Associated Press.
“We don’t expect any further major releases of either video or documents,” the department said in a statement. “If documents are identified that have not previously been released, they will be made available.”
Fifty-eight people died, 869 were wounded or injured, and thousands were affected when a high-limit video poker player fired assault-style weapons equipped with rapid-fire devices from the Mandalay Bay resort into a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers across Las Vegas Boulevard.
The material released until last week provided dramatic details about horror and heroism, but no insight about the motive of 64-year-old gunman Stephen Paddock.
Authorities have said Paddock killed himself before police arrived. Investigators believe he acted alone with no broader conspiracy and no link to terrorism.
The records stemmed from video clips from nearly 1,200 officer body-worn cameras; more han 1,000 audio clips of 911 calls; about 2,100 pages of officer reports, witness statements and dispatch logs; and video from streetscape, rooftop, and helicopter vantage points.
Transcribed statements from 18 of the hundreds of officers who responded to the shooting were made public last week.
The material came with little department comment or explanation and no narrative thread.
Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo released an investigation summary and declared the police investigation ended in August, saying frenzied reports of other shootings on the night of the massacre turned out to be false.
The FBI is expected to soon release a report including a behavioral analysis of Paddock.

Yes, it does strengthen the dollar, just as QE devalued our dollar at about 20-25%.
Yes, as I get it too, they are destroying the currency. Yet, the currency had no value when it was issued – only paper and faith. Yet, when the currency is returned/taken out of circulation, it has been earned (via wages or sales in the open market) and does have value.
In other words, I could go to my back yard and trim grass clippings, pretend they were Fed Reserve notes, and once they are returned to me, I earn 4.8 TRILLION.

Trump comes along and the FED starts to withdraw 50Billion/month or 600billion/year.
That’s a swing of 1.56trillion OR using the gas analogy, in terms of liquidity, it’s like raising the price of gas by $15.60/gallon OR using a GDP analogy for a 20 trillion dollar economy — OMG, that’s about a 7.5% swing in GDP (just in liquidity).

Maybe part of your problem in figuring out what is going on is that Jerome Powell does not have a degree in economics. He has a degree in Politics and another in law. He is a DC insiders Insider in that he was born and raised in Washington DC. His big claim to fame is founding and running one of those corporate raider out fits for the Carlye Group.

My very wise mother warned me that making gay marriages constitutional would be akin to opening a Pandora’s Box. At the time, part of me thought that, perhaps, gay marriages would finally shut the gay activists up. Boy, was I wrong….and my mother very right.
Before, I honestly had no issues with people’s private lifestyle. Now, I am really resentful that all of these deviations are becoming the new normal. Sometimes, I feel like it’s a crime to believe that heterosexual unions should remain the norm (as it has been since the beginning of time).
I’m not going to pretend to be an expert but some of the admonition about homosexuality being sinful might be from a health standpoint.When I was young our neighbor was a doctor. When they went out of town we fed their dogs..and… I read his medical magazines . At that time the aids epidemic was in full swing.
Having sex in body parts not designed for it increases the risk of contracting and spreading disease as well as internal ruptures and whatever.
Jehovah’s Witnesses and maybe others do not take/use any blood transfusions. (from some Biblical admonition they believe in)………agree or disagree with that….before modern medical knowledge was advanced…being transfused with non matching blood is usually lethal. My great aunt died from that.

One issue in 2002 — 17 years ago now — had a two-page spread detailing the problems with action in ‘the tradesman’s entrance’, as some of us in the UK put it.

I know what you mean. I went from thinking, well, give them civil unions I guess so they can see each other in the hospital and things like that, but marriage was a bridge too far for me. And even that wasn’t enough so quickly what used to be my own personal moral distaste that I felt about it has become deep anger and resentment at having the gay agenda CRAMMED down my throat every where I go, everywhere I look.
And gay rights was so clearly a stalking horse. It is pretty apparent now, looking back. It really was the slippery slope so many warned about, and now here we are.
Oh hell yeah, it’s crammed down our throats and they’ve ramped it up with drag queens being slobbered over as sages and role models…beauty queens, male athletes masquerading as women….teaching impressionable children that they aren’t male/female. They’ve bastardized the few that truly are born different. Lifestyled it.

The granting of a six month extension to the original 12-month term appears to be normal. Mueller’s panel was originally set for 18-month term right out the door… which signals to me that judge expected a lot of testimony to be heard.
IF this is where Gen Flynn is giving testimony, I cannot believe it to be against POTUS. Then again, I can’t reconcile Mueller allowing Flynn to give testimony to his GJ against the FBI/DoJ… I’m conflicted to say the

For the flu or any other nagging ailment I recommend water when thirsty and nothing else. Let mother nature do its thing. Your body will do what it has to to heal. Any over the counter meds just supress what your body wants to do to get healthy. May take a few days but will typically be a lot faster than doing the meds and chicken soup routine. Get well soon.

No problem. I do 5-6 day water only fasts every few months just for maintenance, eat very low carb and I don’t get sick. It is easier if you are a low carb/keto eater as you won’t get carb “flu” withdrawal symptoms.
Most eat the recommended high carb diet and then end up getting sick and feeling like crap. We are not designed to be sick. All the best.
Add zinc, it boosts the immune system. I fight off (and win) any time I feel a symptom coming on. I take zinc, plus C or a multi at bedtime, wake up, all good.

Did you know that Janet Nugyen – former State Senator from Orange County who got harvested out of her seat in the State Senate – was going to run for CAGOP Chair? She was a rumored candidate after former Congresswoman Mimi Walters was.
In the case of Nguyen, it is alleged that Kevin McCarthy is not a fan. Nguyen is alleged to have issues with Assemblyman Tyler Diep (who won AD72 in Orange County due to the help of Travis Allen despite the onslaught) and Supervisor Andrew Do. It was put to me that some of that baggage was part of McCarthy’s reticence to support her. (Note: the CIR went in huge for both Do and Diep in their races)
Congressman Kevin McCarthy, the GOP Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, is quite worried about Travis Allen (or Steve Frank) getting elected Chairman. He is alleged to have not stopped looking for a candidate not named David Hadley.
It is my opinion, based on conversations with several delegates and interested political insiders that David Hadley has failed to gain traction and that Steve Frank has a loyal base of much older delegates and Travis Allen has a broad and passionate base. With the moderate/establishment/liberal faction of the GOP divided and the entire CAGOP demoralized the door is wide open for any legitimate candidate with positive history among the grassroots to win.
Remember this in the backdrop of the $2MM+ that was spent in 2016 trying to control nominees in dem districts and County Central Committee members. That is basically a memory as the rank and file body of the CAGOP appear to be off the reservation.
Kevin McCarthy is going to be forced to do something he has not had to do in many years, fund an operation to keep control of the CAGOP. That had fallen onto the shoulders of Charles Munger until Mr. Munger decided that he was wasting his money in politics (my opinion, based on the pattern I saw).
This gets me to how I drew the conclusion that Kevin McCarthy has thrown David Hadley under the bus. Once Janet Nguyen was summarily rejected by McCarthy – and on the heels of every former member of Congress deciding to go get paying jobs, retire, etc. – the phone calls did not stop.
McCarthy appears to be digging deep in to his well and the name that is surfacing is long time political operative Jessica Patterson. Patterson is not well-known in the rank-and-file of the CAGOP as she is typically at conventions working delegate and floor drills.
Every negative bit of info I got about Jessica Patterson came from Steve Frank. (I will not regurgitate that on this blog) I first encountered her name when working for Steve Poizner (with Steve Frank) against Meg Whitman. Before I left the Steve Poizner campaign, I used to talk to Frank about a lot of the operatives in the Whitman Camp, Patterson was one.
Patterson worked for CAGOP “Leadership” for several years. Her role was always to carry out the wishes of the CAGOP leadership in convention outcomes. There is nothing immoral about that, it is a job for which Patterson excelled and was well-paid.
The insiders I have spoken to about Patterson all think well of her, but few people I know really know her well. This may well be of Jessica’s own doing, as the thing I find odd is that even though I have 21 years experience in the CAGOP and campaigns, I have had almost no interactions with her.
Patterson will have to overcome the attachment to McCarthy and that her resume will look like that of the consummate insider. I am not sure how she overcomes that, but again, she is well liked by those that know her.
It is clear to me that Travis Allen has the advantage at this point in the CAGOP Chairman’s race and the reactions are going to continue and intensify as he continues to consolidate support.
