Joy . . . a Choice, a Struggle
The joy of the Lord is the gladness of heart that comes from knowing God, abiding in Christ, and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus was born, the angels announced “good tidings of great joy” (Luke 2:10). All who find Jesus know, with the shepherds of the nativity, the joy He brings. Even before His birth, Jesus had brought joy, as attested to in Mary’s song (Luke 1:47) and by John’s response to hearing Mary’s voice as he “leaped for joy” in his mother’s womb (Luke 1:44).
Jesus exemplified joy in His ministry. He was no glum ascetic; rather, His enemies accused Him of being too joyful on occasion (Luke 7:34). Jesus described Himself as a bridegroom enjoying a wedding feast (Mark 2:18–20); He “rejoiced in the Holy Spirit” (Luke 10:21); He spoke of “my joy” (John 15:11) and promised to give His disciples a lifetime supply of it (John 16:24). Joy is reflected in many of Jesus’ parables, including the three stories in Luke 15, which mention “rejoicing in the presence of the angels” (Luke 15:10) and end with a joyful shepherd, a joyful woman, and a joyful father.
Nehemiah told the repentant Israelites that the joy of the Lord would be their strength (Nehemiah 8:10). The early church was characterized by gladness and the joy of the Lord (Acts 2:46; 13:52), and “joy in the Holy Spirit” is a distinguishing mark of the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17). Those who are part of the kingdom share in the kingdom’s delight.
Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). In fact, it is our Christian duty to rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 3:1; 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16). In Christ, the believer is “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8).
Because of its supernatural origin, the joy of the Lord—our gladness of heart—is present even through the trials of life. We know we are children of God, and no one can snatch us away from Him (John 10:28–29). We are heirs to “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade,” and no one can steal it from us (1 Peter 1:4; Matthew 6:20). We see the Author and Finisher of our faith, and, let the enemy rage ever so much, we know who wins in the end (Hebrews 12:2; Psalm 2).
Faith is the victory that overcomes the world, and the joy of the Lord is our strength. Adverse circumstances, instead of hindering our faith, can actually enhance our joy. Paul and Silas knew adversity as they sat with their feet in the stocks in a Philippian jail cell. Their legal rights had been violated. They had been arrested without cause and beaten without a trial. At midnight, since they couldn’t sleep, they sang—loudly—the praises of the Lord they were serving (Acts 16:25). A miracle soon followed (verse 26).
The apostles in Jerusalem were arrested—twice—and ordered not to preach in Jesus’ name. The second time they faced the court, they were beaten. Unfazed, they returned home “rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name” and ready to preach some more (Acts 5:41). Of course, the apostles were only following the example of our Lord, who had “for the joy set before him . . . endured the cross, scorning its shame” (Hebrews 12:2).
The joy of the Lord may be a mystery to the one who does not possess it. But, for the believer in Christ, the joy of the Lord comes as naturally as grapes on a vine. As we abide in Christ, the True Vine, we, the branches, are full of His strength and vitality, and the fruit we produce, including joy, is His doing (John 15:5).
Where’s the Beef? Joy? Do you feel it? Do I feel it? If not, perhaps an adjustment of perspective is sorely needed.
We are on this Earth for a very short time . . . an infinitesimally short period of time when compared to eternity. And God’s Word has told us to live with joy during the troubles of this world and to look forward to the glories that will follow:
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. 2 Timothy 3:1-17
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 1 John 2:16

A hot box may have failed to notify of the fire. But if the fire was in fact caused by overheated bearings it would have been, I think, difficult to near impossible for a bad actor to calculate whereabouts on the journey a fire would actually break out.
It seems logical that for it to have been staged to happen in a specific area something with more reliable timing would have to have been used.
The video I was listening to suggested an emergency brake on that car could have been pulled. Couple that with sabotage of the hot boxes after that and you have a disaster in the general location you want.

Since the incident, the EPA says Norfolk Southern contractors “installed a dam and a water bypass at Sulphur Run to prevent further contamination of downstream waters. They have also stopped spillage of remaining spilled product onto the stream.”

I’m still wondering why they couldn’t drain the tanks. That has GOT to be the approach in the future.
They may not have wanted actual personnel within a certain distance, and the couplers were not set up for robots to attach drain lines.
Situation needs work. I can think of multiple [patentable] solutions that I’m sure NS can think of as well, to solve this situation with existing technology and have it actively tested and deployed within a year – if they actually wanted to solve the problem.
The real problem is that their Chinese, woke, and short-term-profit-loving management will vote down or otherwise impede any real solution.
They need to clean out management with a FIRE HOSE to get back to something that will work.
Thing is, it’s not really NS’s problem. They rent the railcars (unless, by odd chance, it was a Norfolk Southern tanker car). I’m sure there is some standards authority for railroad-worthy tanker cars that governs how they are built.

The entire situation is full of fizzy propaganda. I’m not an apologist for NS, I’m just looking to be grounded in facts. NS operates in a constrained environment between government, unions, and contractual restrictions. They didn’t load the stuff, they didn’t design the cars, and when the train derailed, they weren’t in charge of emergency response. To blame them 100% for the ensuing clusterfark is just unrealistic.
The bottom line is that you are being lied to. You are being damaged. You have every reason to be upset.
But THE SAME ASSHOLES WHO ARE DAMAGING YOU are spreading BS around to try and blame ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES — and the biggest name in the target zone is NS.

Read a comment in a railroad blog. The hot box detectors are located along the rails. The hot-box is located on the train car axle itself and as the axle (wheels, etc) overheat, the detectors send a radio signal to somewhere.
My understanding is the signal is sent to the lead engine / conductor AND wherever the supervising switch yard is.
“why did the train de-rail” Good question first time I’ve seen that asked. Even if it was on fire why couldn’t it come to a stop normally.

Trains need a complete re-think to deal with the modern world. A lot of the intellectual underpinnings of that re-think are being done by railroad companies, but are being resisted by railroad unions and government regulators. Along with a complicit press that wants to portray railroads as Uncle Moneybags whenever anything goes wrong, and work rules that are opaque and unintuitive, pretty much everything that people think they know about the business just ain’t so.
Shorter version — if regulators have to approve each time you fart, they need to be responsible for the smell.

I notice that the useless generally got shuffled off to safety or quality in the factories I worked at.
I noticed the testers (for software) were usually dummies, so I presume they got there for similar reasons.
“safety” is a minor (but never nonexistent) in a place that doesn’t deal with actual physical objects.
The testers I encountered in the last 15 years are also engineers/software developers. They work on complex network environments including clouds, security, databases, and front-end software. Lots of moving parts and lots can go wrong. They manually test GUIs but also write software scripts to test all functions and may help isolate issues on the front or backend. If a tester is just keystroking GUIs, yep even I can and do that as part of tech writing, but I couldn’t do all the testers need to do.
My current project, the tester is also a developer. The prior one, there were multiple testers and only one of them had a clue (he was a developer who realized he could write test harnesses without all the “process” involved with the production software, so he was happy to test). The project before that, they were not developers but at least one of them was pretty bright (though a couple of them were dingbats).
So it’s a mixed bag. More unambiguously the non-testing “Quality” people usually had no technical clue whatsoever and so they basically had to fall back on “the book” and micro-enforce everything even under circumstances where it made no sense…because an idiot had written the book.
That’s obviously the most desirable way to get drainage, but there are others that will still work even under more dire circumstances. My goal would be that no matter how the derailed tanker lands, it be capable of being drained. That can be designed into the tanker, or if the tanker skin is expendable, it can be securely pierced with the right tech, even with existing tankers.

Foam insulates, and would increase heat buildup. Water would help cool the tankers and avert the danger.
Yeah, you want the foam on the FIRE SOURCE NEARBY – not on the tanker at risk.
Yeah, the people who planned this knew what would happen. They plot out the responses, knowing it will be “by the book”.
Foam is good for fire suppression before and then while draining. The drainage strategy will actually work even with fire present or nearby, because if it FAILS, it goes into an *actual* controlled burn. But with foam, there is plenty of time to reduce pressure immediately and then drain the contents.
As cthulhu mentioned, drainage also cools the contents considerably, buying time. Same principle as butane lighters and propane tanks cooling down with use.
An emergency drain to tankers is FAST – it can be done in an hour or two.
It’s especially handy because they were concerned about the temperature, and letting off the pressure would have cooled the tanks with no special equipment needed.
There is so much wrong here, that there wasn’t a simple, elegant, economical solution to this YEARS AGO.

First things first – I read that article, and while the author makes a lot of great points, he’s still fear-mongering, IMO (plus there are some factual errors and stretches). Dioxins are BAD – OK – not just BAD – not just VERY BAD – but REALLY, REALLY BAD – however, they are not “insanely bad”. The most important thing is this.
All of the ways that make a significant amount of dioxins have been shut down. Chemically, it’s doing things with polychlorinated phenols that produce significant quantities of them.
Yes, vinyl chloride production generates some, but not nearly as much, by orders of magnitude. And while burning chlorinated things which are NOT chlorinated benzenoids (meaning things like vinyl chloride) ALSO produces dioxins, again, it’s not anywhere near as much as one would get from burning something like a tanker full of pentachlorophenol, or trichlorophenol worst of all.
So this accident is (IMO) not nearly as dangerous as the classic accidents that WERE associated with large releases of dioxins (like that plant in Italy).
They need to start testing for dioxins, but IMO they’re not going to find huge levels.

This particular substance is TCDD – the worst of the chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. You can read through here and understand how toxic it is, but it’s a very “Russian roulette” killer. Some people can be hugely contaminated and nothing will happen to them. Others get a tiny dose, and get cancer or liver problems soon.
In humans, dioxins are RARELY IF EVER directly fatal. In other words, they’re toxic, but in a very indirect way. That’s not good news, but it’s better than the alternative.
Still, you can look at the doses that get bad results in animals. They are TINY.
The only GOOD news is that most modern processes, even on a big scale, only produce tiny amounts.
TCDD has a long half-life in the body, accumulating in fat. That actually suggests that one way to detox is to burn off the fat and simultaneously flush, so it has no place to hide, and gets out of the system. Exposure is NOT a hopeless situation.
IMO there needs to be revved up testing of livestock, dairy and fish in nearby and downwind areas.
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE GOT LUCKY. I am betting we did.
The reason is that this was not a car carrying a clorinated benzenoid. THAT would be a real risk of dioxins.
No matter what, BURNING has to end as a solution here.
Prompt emergency draining to intact tankers IS the only answer.

Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree Dies After He Collapses During Arizona Marathon
Pierre Lipton, a 26-year-old athlete and businessman who was featured on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, passed away after collapsing at the Mesa Marathon earlier this month.
Lipton, a Brown University graduate, was about to finish the marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 5 seconds, setting a personal best.
After crossing the finish line, he suddenly collapsed near the paramedics, Boston.com reported.
He was rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.
Though there is still no official cause of death, Lipton’s dad, Dr. Jordan Lipton told the Boston Globe, “the working diagnosis is he might have had some sudden electrolyte imbalance that caused arrhythmia”.
