Well…a lot of the work behind the scenes can be done remotely. I have a brother who is a computer engineer, and he works remotely for a government agency. As long as the work gets done, who cares.
I care, and here’s why.
Going to work is more than the work being done. It’s water-cooler discussion of issues, it’s dealing with other coworkers, it’s being friends with the weird guy in the next cubicle, it’s making it work with blacks, whites, women, Asians, everybody.
In other words, it’s about community. The loss of community and socialization is what is destroying America. And this is part of that. If leftists can sit home on their couch, and never have to speak to the conservative Christian at work, who’s a really sweet human they would like if they did, then they can continue to believe that all Christians are bigoted jerks. Same with all others who disagree with them.
For a lot of jobs, you have a point. But computer engineers/programmers? The department my brother works for is two time zones from him. Aside from that, they do have zoom meetings and the like. It’s not like they don’t communicate.
It is still my opinion that it would be healthier both for your brother and society at large for him to work face-to-face with others. But of course, as always, we disagree civilly here at the Q Tree.
I come from a family of Irish engineers. Communication is optional.

There’s something to that. Procrastination for me ends up being cleaning the house. That can get in the way.
Back in my video equipment days, a lot of time I’d come in about 10 am…..but after everyone left at 5, I’d start walking the shop floor…..
And, the next day, work areas would have post-its. Lots and lots of post-its. “Kit 60 1203 boards”, “Send this kit out for assembly — we’ll put the crystals on later when they arrive”, “The silkscreen on these panels is smudged, send them back to try to salvage”, “Prioritize testing for work order 44847”, “Expedite transformers”….
Sometimes, I wouldn’t get home until 9 pm.
But it’s often helpful to have that quiet time to let everything synchronize.

The last big gov job I did was remote. We had secure connections to meet individually or as groups discussing issues of importance. I am a tech writer, so when I worked with engineers, we would discuss as needed. When I am writing or editing, the last thing I care about is people’s skin color or community other than tech meetings where their physical bodies don’t matter to me at all. Those techs who scoped the site capabilities and installed the infrastructure needed to be in an office and traveled around the world to the sites. Those who defined the architecture of the tech and who defined how things should be configured and connected and secured, did not need patty cake. The distributed brains IMHO makes things more secure, not less.

Parts of my sister’s job are done from home, especially in the spring. Far fewer interruptions than when she is in the office. She gets her work done, her bosses don’t care where she does it.
Having worked as one of the pioneers of work-at-home, and having watched so many CEOs like Marissa Mayer (Yahoo) later shoot themselves in the foot by making clunky prohibitions of work-at-home, I caution against the hubris of banning it, or even restricting it too much.
There is a VERY sweet spot of EFFICIENCY where people who NEED work-at-home, or people who are more productive using work-at-home, get it, and those who do not, or are not, are not pushed into it by stupid management.
Make work-at-home work for the right reasons. That’s what’s needed.
I can imagine that the FAKENESS of COVID pushed far too many government employees into working at home. I observed that and said “WHAT THE FUCK!”
It was very false. We over-did work-at-home as a way of installing communism, and thank goodness it failed.
Just fix it. But don’t fix it like Pol Pot would fix it. Don’t be stupid.
Pre-COVID I found that about 2 days a week away from the office made things run smoother.
Often that meant going to the datacenter to work, or working from home while on an outage bridge, but the principle held true.
I needed to be away from people to focus on my work, and then I needed to be in the office to get facetime with people to move my work forward.
Russia and China are doing an amazing job of breaking up NATO by helping along its contradictions. Primary among those – anybody who took Soros money, or opposed “fixing this shit” by Trump.
NATO and “Atlantis” (the ecology around the pond) were always headed for downsizing – the question was who would be in charge of it.

Allow me to posit another grammar distortion that has extremely damaging effects on our society: domicile replaced with resident or residence.
Obviously the word residence used in a statute or legal document has an invisible modifier – valid or legal. But residence has little or no legal meaning/effect unless it is also assumed to be one’s domicile.
However, the average person incorrectly assumes that living somewhere confers legal rights [a common example is anchor babies]. It might but it might not. Especially in the area of legal status in this country.
Forms for federal benefits should ask for the applicant’s domicile and if that answer is somewhere other than the USA, then most likely no benefits are available. But as long as the answer to residence is taken to mean the same as domicile, then the applicant is deemed to have the right to receive benefits.
If I have mis-stated anything [only on my 1st cup of coffee], please correct me.
I’m more concerned by the fact that the average person actually thinks “domicile” is just a fancy word for “where you live.”
So changing the phrasing on the form will alter nothing.
It must be signed under penalty of perjury.

I drive 55 miles I-10 in N FL at least twice a week, going back and forth to the Village and more when taking Sally and her Dad to doctor appointments.
This is what I have observed about that stretch of road:
The best speed in the left lane is 79 and 70-75 in the right lane.
Semi Trucks go 6-75 in the right lane.
Those big tall pickup trucks are the fastest – they usually go 80+ – I move over to the left lane for those guys.
If someone is hogging the fast lane going 70mph – and won’t move over when we approach – we usually pass them on the right.
FL law says we should move to the left lane if a car is stopped on the shoulder – by car trouble or law enforcement.
I have been told by a friend of a State Trooper that they do not stop anyone under 80mph on I-10 in N FL. – So I usually go 77-79 mph.
The key to successful tailgating (IMHO) is to check your cell phone every few seconds to see if something important happened.

If the weather has been above freezing before the snowfall, there is still a bit of heat left in the hard surface of the paved areas, so the snow will melt here before that heat is expended.
As for the news, some papers or tabloids are more prone to exaggeration than others.
My dad always cleared the sidewalks & drive down to the pavement so regardless of the temp the sun always finished getting the edges & any errant ice build up. He used to even make us shovel the turnarounds on their boulevard street as that county road always had very crappy snow removal activity. Usually their city had plowed the sidewalks before the county had plowed that main thoroughfare…sigh…Oh he also would clear a path to the storm sewer so the melting snow runoff can drain away. I’ve been doing that at our house so we don’t end up with a huge frozen puddle at the base of our driveway; train up a child & all 😉

Yes! I thought Tulsa was bad compared to Detroit but my 5 years in Northern Michigan, with the last winter having 250″ of snow, made Detroit seem like hyperventilating whiners when there’s less than even an inch of snow. Suck it up Buttercup! We had friends from one of the more remote Canadian provinces & they had to plug their cars into electric engine warmers to even start them up in the morning, all just taken in stride, of course.
The tiny town in N MI where we lived did a Great Job with managing the roads with plowing & sand primarily so that driving up there in much snowier conditions was still much safer than down state.
I hate the snow driving for the first couple of snows of the season because people are idiots since they apparently forgot their winter driving skills, but things settle down a few snows into the year, thankfully 🙂

When I first drive in the snow each season I try to skid a bit on my street or a messy parking lot just to refresh my mind on how to handle the car in these conditions. I can’t stop the “pump the brakes” style vs holding down the brake for anti-lock brakes to kick in. Sometimes I downshift for extra traction & control for I don’t have 4 wheel drive.
