Microsoft is pushing to make every Windows 11 PC an AI PC. In new updates, the company is focusing on further integrating AI into Windows 11 apps and experiences (not just chatbots), and making voice as much of an input option as the keyboard and mouse.
The idea, Microsoft says, is that AI on a PC should be easy and natural to interact with in either text or voice; that it should be able to see your screen and information and help; and that it should be able, with your permission, to “take action on your behalf.”
“Voice will become the third input mechanism to using your PC,” Microsoft executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer Yusf Mehdi said on a call with reporters ahead of the announcement. He mentioned that the idea is for talking to be additive, not replacing keyboards and mice altogether. Mehdi authored a blog post on the new features.

When i bought the computer, the tech i bought it from was asking me questions when he set it up for me–and privacy was a big factor for me…maybe he did what you are describing–limiting access to stuff. i dunno.

The PC search is evolving. I don’t keep up with changing tech between computers, because it’s not my hobby. I don’t dislike it, it’s interesting, I just have too few hours in the day to begin with.
So everything changes in the usual 5+ years between computers, which then requires a lot of research to get up to speed, with not enough time to do it the way I would like to.
It looks like monitor technology has evolved to the point that I can get a 49″ curved Samsung OLED monitor that will give me approximately the same amount of screen real estate as my current 3-monitor setup. This means more options, without being limited to a PC that has 3 monitor/display outputs. They’re not cheap, at around $700 to $800, but might be around $500 next month during black Friday sales.
Even at that cost, the overall cost might be considerably cheaper than the Sigao (UK) fanless unit I posted a link to the other day.
Then I ran into a new wrinkle, apparently most if not all Intel chips have a built in back-door for the government. Except the government gets theirs special-built from Intel, without the back-door, which is how the back-door was discovered by the public.
I guess the government doesn’t like to be SPIED on, they just like to DO the spying.

If this is accurate, it’s as bad as Windows, just even more insidious.
If I rule out Intel, that leaves AMD and Mac.
Nobody seems to use AMD for their fanless builds, and based on my own current experience (and problems), there’s probably a reason for that. AMD does make low watt (35 watt) CPUs, but none of the (relatively few) companies who build fanless PCs use AMD.
I have never used a Mac of any kind, but the Mac Mini M4 (and M3, and M2 before it) are reported by users to be effectively silent. Apparently Steve Jobs or whoever runs the company now wanted a silent PC, and worked toward building fanless, but in the end (at least so far), they needed an internal fan for when the CPU is under heavy load / stress.
Since the Apple is designed as a whole unit (as opposed to Windows PCs, which are put together from off the shelf parts from lots of brands), they were able to design a computer that is essentially silent, even though it does have a small fan. Or at least that’s the story. They do have a two week “no questions asked” return policy.
The Mac mini with 32GB of RAM and a 1 TB internal SSD is about $1,400 but $200 off or $200 gift card (estimated, based on previous sales) on Black Friday thru Cyber Monday.
So $1,200 + $500 (49″ Samsung OLED monitor) is less than half the cost of the Sigao fanless PC I was looking at.
The last problem is compatibility.
One of the programs I use daily is called OmniForm. It’s from 1995, maybe older. The company (Scansoft, and before them, Nuance) ended support for it in 2008, and it’s not even supposed to work with Windows 10, but it works on mine. Whether it would work on Windows 11 is a crapshoot.
Apparently it doesn’t work on Linux. It could work on Mac in a Windows Virtual Environment, but that would require installing Windows on the Mac (as part of a virtual thingamabob). And if I do that, I’d have to use the Windows virtual machine for everything else, because I don’t think you can run two operating systems simultaneously, with one operating in one ‘window’, and another operating system running on the rest of the screen.
So I solved one problem (may only need one monitor / display port), but gained another (compatibility issue with a needed program).
There is another company that essentially took over OmniForm, because it is so good for its intended purpose, and there was no commercially available substitute. The new company, running (essentially) the same OmniForm program, is called FormDocs.

So the good news is that so many people needed OmniForm, that it was rescued from oblivion, and is still available in 2025, at least for Windows machines. It’s not a perfect copy of OmniForm, but there is a way to convert OmniForm files to FormDocs. It may require a little (or a lot) of ‘clean up’ after the conversion, to get everything to look and work the same. I know the program well enough (after using it for 30 years) and the new FormDocs is similar enough that I should be able to ‘fix’ my files after conversion, it will just take time.
But since it’s a business-oriented software program, naturally it’s expensive, at $500 ($600 if I want to be able to scan pre-existing forms, which I don’t need). I think the original OmniForm cost less than $50 back in 1995.
Unfortunately, FormDocs is only compatible with WINDOWS.
So I’m just chasing my tail, looking for a unicorn that used to exist, but doesn’t anymore.
My computing power requirements are not intensive for the most part. I just need to be able to use the Internet and run Microsoft Word (or equivalent, like Libre Office) and Excel (or equivalent, like Libre Office), and use my old Adobe Professional 9.0 (I think that’s what it is), which is basically Adobe Reader but it’s editable, so I can type text anywhere I want on an Adobe pdf, and rearrange pages (or delete pages) if necessary.
And it would be really nice if my old Fujitsu Scan-Snap scanner (which scans to Adobe pdf) was compatible.
All of these (few) things work together in Windows.
Without Windows, everything becomes a problem.
I would stay with Windows, but Windows decided to go full-Hitler, so they are forcing me out of their eco
systemprison.So at this point it looks like I will need a two PC solution.
First, the cheapest, lowest performance fanless PC with a Windows 10 (or older) operating system, to keep running my current OmniForm program, and I will disconnect it from the Internet, so there will be no operating system ‘updates’ or security issues. It will be a standalone computer with a single 20″ monitor with one primary purpose (OmniForm), plus access to old original files (Word, Excel, etc.) prior to conversion to whatever non-Windows equivalent I end up with.
And then a new non-Windows PC with an operating system that is safe to connect to the Internet, which means Linux or Apple/Mac.
From the few videos I have watched so far, it looks like Apple/Mac is an easier transition from Windows than Linux.
What are the downsides to a Mac, security, spying or otherwise?
There are several ways of running Windows programs on Linux, provided you have enough cores and memory.
One of which is WINE — https://www.winehq.org/ — which runs Windows programs with a compatability layer that translates Windows system requests to Linux ones “on-the-fly”. Valve, the games guys, pumped a lot of money into this a couple of years back, resulting in Steam Proton [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_(software) ]. Wine has the advantage of being able to present itself as most versions of Windows, so if a program likes Win XP, that’s what you dial-in and use.
Another is running a virtual machine. For this, you typically dedicate a couple of processors and a block of memory and use an actual copy of Windows [there are systems that dynamically allocate processors and memory, as well]. You typically need a beefier system to get appropriate performance from virtual Windows, but it’s real Windows.
I would disagree that Mac is an easier transition from Windows than Linux, with the caveat that it is true for about 20% of Linux distros. In the overwhelming majority of cases with modern distros, Linux would be the easier switch. You can find out about various distros from http://www.distrowatch.com .
Libre Office will read and write Microsoft Office documents — it just prefers to use its own format. And Libre Office Draw will open, edit, and write pdf files.

I haven’t said one word so far about the scandal with the Young Republicans text messages that were leaked. In them, there is “racist” language, “bigoted” language, and a lot of slurs like retard, faggot, etc.
But in the hopes that somebody from higher up is reading here, I am now going to address some stuff.
I know young men from age 14 to 35, and this is how they talk now. Society has driven them to the edge, and they no longer give a fuck. They’ve been told they’re racist, bigoted, homophobic, misogynistic, etc., their whole lives, and THEY DO NOT CARE ANYMORE.
Young men are done with society and its expectations of them. They’d burn it all down if they could. They can’t get into good colleges because they aren’t black, brown, or female. They are turned down for jobs, same reasons. They can’t afford to get married, buy a home, or have kids.
AND YOUR POLITICS AND SYSTEM DID THAT TO THEM.
They hate you. They hate everything you stand for. And you stand for everyone who is NOT THEM.
This is why so many of them are returning to church. Conservative churches are the last bastion of society where being a white male is not deemed a negative.
If you want to fix America, you are first going to have to make amends to the generation of young white men who you have alienated, pushed aside, and forgotten about. Because if you don’t, one day they are going to realize just how many of them there really are, and they will revolt. And then we are in for it.

In re your post above, I believe that the anger and angst of young men is GOOD – finally they are waking up to the reality of the devastating effects of the ‘BIG CLUB’s multi-vectored attacks against our country and culture.
Even now, one may perceive that the tide is turning – and I strongly suspect that they will discover the true enemy quite soon (i.e., pure evil).
As you wrote, many are finally turning to church and to the Bible, and I’ve read that many are choosing vocational learning instead of the propagandist universities, with exhorbitant tuitions (causing crushing debt) and questionable career stability.
Also recently, I’ve come across articles that young men aren’t pursuing young women for relationships, and that there seems to be “toxic feminism” that turns them off. Not INvountary celibacy, but rather Voluntary celibacy.
Q posted many times that “only at the precipice” will people find the will to change. Perhaps these disaffected young men will serve as the vanguard of this change, which is sorely needed in America – and the rest of the world as well …

Hi! I did read that you were back, and I’m glad. I feel the same comfort you do, with all my old friends here.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing that young men are so angry. I think it’s good, too. I just don’t think our government is paying enough attention to it. Charlie Kirk got it; he knew they were looking for “something better,” and he was out there showing them the way. We need more Charlies.
Many young men are, as you say, voluntarily celibate. Which isn’t a bad thing. My youngest son and I have spoken often about the reality of the “Old West.” We live in Montana. Early on, there were far more men here than “virtuous” women. Men frequently didn’t marry until they were older, if at all. My home now was built about 1895, and is part of the old “red light” district of the town. It was probably at one time a “bawdy house.” That might be the only contact with women many men of 1890’s Montana had.
Our society has become obsessed with sex as the end-all be-all of human experience. Young men today are finding out that is a fallacy.

WARREN BUFFETT: [There are] three major categories of investment. And you ought to think very hard about which category you want to be in before you start thinking about the choices available within that category.
Now, the first category is anything denominated in a currency. It could be bonds, it could be deposits in a bank, it can be a money market fund, it can be cash in your pocket.
And the — if you will reach in your pocket — I don’t like to do this, but — and pull out your wallet —
You’re watching an historic event. (Laughter)
If you look at this — and, I might point out, this is a one [dollar bill]. Charlie [Munger, Buffett’s long-time late partner] carries a [hundred] —
On the back of it, it says, “In God We Trust.” And that’s really false advertising.
The — if Elizabeth Warren were here, she would say, quite properly, it should say, “In Government We Trust,” because God isn’t going to do anything about that dollar bill, you know, if government does the wrong things, in terms of keeping it as valuable as it was when you parted with it to buy a bond or put it in a bank.
Any currency-related investment is a bet on how government now, and in the future, will behave…
Almost all currencies have declined in value over time. I mean, it may be built into almost any economic system that it will be easier to work with a value of currency that declines in value than a currency that appreciates in value, and the Japanese might reaffirm that here with their experience.
So as a class, currency-related investments, whether they are in the UK, or the United States, or anyplace else — unless we’re getting paid extremely well for having them — we do not think make much sense.
The second category of investments regard items that you buy that don’t produce anything but that you hope someone will pay you more for later on.
And the classic case of that is gold.
And I’ve used this illustration before, but if you take all of the gold in the world — don’t get too excited now — and put it into a cube, it will be a cube that’s about 67 feet on a side. That would be 165,000 or 170,000 metric tons.
So, you could have a cube — if you owned all the gold in the world — you could have a cube that would be 67 or 68 feet on a side.
And you could get a ladder, and you could climb up on top of it, and you could say, you know, I’m sitting on top of the world, and think you’re king of the world.
You could, you know, you could fondle it, you could polish it, you could do all these things with it. Stare at it. But it isn’t going to do anything.
All you are doing when you buy that is that you’re hoping that somebody else a year from now, or five years from now, will pay you more to own something that, again, can’t do anything, but you’re hoping that the person then thinks that somebody else will buy something five years later from him.
In other words, you’re betting on not just how scared people are now of paper money, you’re betting on how much they think a year from now people will be scared two years from then on…
The third category of asset is something that you value based on its — that it will produce, what it will deliver.
You buy a farm because you expect a certain amount of corn or soybeans or cotton or whatever it may be, to come your way every year.
And you decide how much you pay based on how much you think the asset itself will deliver over time. And those are the assets that appeal to me and Charlie.
Now, there’s some logical follow-on to that. If you buy that farm, and you really think about how many bushels of corn, how much bushels of soybeans will it produce, how much do I have to pay the tenant farmer, how much do I have to pay in taxes and so on, you can make a rational calculation, and the success of that investment will be determined in your own mind by whether it meets your expectations as to what it delivers.
Logically, you should not care whether you get a quote on that farm a day later, or a week later, or a month later, or a year later.
We feel the same way about businesses.
When we buy ISCAR [an Israeli precision metalworking company], or we buy Lubrizol, or whatever, we don’t run around getting a quote on it every week and say, you know, ‘Is it up or down?’ or anything like that. We look to the business.
We feel the same way about securities. When we buy a marketable security, we don’t care if the stock exchange closes for a few years.
So, when we look at Berkshire, we are looking at what we think can be delivered from the productive assets that we own, and how we can utilize that capital in acquiring more productive assets.

That’s a good monologue on gold, but it leaves out a few things.
Gold is not an investment in that it doesn’t increase. Yeah the price goes up but that’s only a backwards way of saying the dollar is depreciating.
He also says that he doesn’t check the stock market averages regularly. That may be true as far as it goes but I can guarantee that Berkshire Hathaway doesn’t just wake up and sell a company for no reason. The only way his reputation as a genius trader got created in the first place is because he bought and sold stocks based on their performances over time.
The only reason to buy [and store] gold and/or silver is to protect against the day when you want to buy something and the seller doesn’t want your dollars. It also has the benefit of being immune to inflation.
All that said, Buffet is a very smart guy.
