OK – quick announcement. I will put up an article later, but I want to get people started a.s.a.p.
If you’ve ever authored on the old site, you have an Author account on the new site, under your old author credentials, which were imported along with everything else.
I’m asking people to go over and just try to do a fake article as a test. You can entitle it “Author Test – myhandle” if you want, or whatever you want to call it. Just see if your authorship WORKS.
Also, I took a step to make logins easier. I checked two boxes to let “JetPack” handle logins:

Add an extra layer of security to your website by enabling WordPress.com login and secure authentication. If you have multiple sites with this option enabled, you will be able to log in to every one of them with the same credentials.
[ENABLED] Allow users to log in to this site using WordPress.com accounts
[ENABLED] Match accounts using email addresses
[DISABLED] Require accounts to use WordPress.com Two-Step Authentication
We can always turn this back off, but hopefully this will make sign-ins by authors smoother.

OK, I did my usual thing, copying from five weeks back to create “this week’s Saturday daily” (though I disabled comments). I didn’t delete anything in the post.
The coin pics would not embed. I was able to copy paste the link and see the picture, to ensure that the source picture still exists, so it’s not because of the original picture disappearing.
The link to “Donald Trump Don’t Trust China, China is Asshoe” youtube video doesn’t work (but the Chris Rock PSA one does). And my red and yellow bilingual, tri-scriptal (if that’s a word) banner at the bottom is somehow mashed up.
Try to take that copy and edit it into the most functional thing you can. Maybe make a copy of THAT and publish it as your test. I can then look at it and see what workarounds are needed.
It is published, but of course I can go back and try to edit.
Well I could get China Is Asshoe video by just pasting it in again.
I got the China is asshoe text to behave by resizing it, then sizing it back (the font changed; apparently the font from the old site isn’t on the new one).
The coin pictures…forget it! Apparently only a few sites are trusted (not even wikipedia) for image embeds.

So I guess I get to upload everything to the media folder anyway. Yeesh.

And also with the ‘edit image’ function…it lets me edit but then it’s unclear on how to apply those edits.

It looks good, but no author name! That’s no good! If I can’t get the author names to show, I think we pretty much have to move to another theme.
The comments will likely stay pretty much the same, but we MUST have author user names showing prominently, IMO.
Yeah…I just looked, and it’s not showing up in my List of Published Threads.
I’m going to play with themes. Hang on and comment. I’ll tell you when I get the next one installed. It may be rough at first…..

Big issue now is that Val says we can edit each other’s comments with this new system. I think that’s not right, but maybe authors CAN edit comments on their articles. So let’s work that out.

I made a post, I didn’t add content, but I think it will be easy. My posts are usually all words anyway!
Guess what? It turns out that the comment editing capability is BUILT INTO even the current system – we just don’t use it, because there’s no handy button! Seriously, it’s a MESS.
I did a copy and paste because of course I can’t find the copy function button. So it looks a little funky but everything came over. I have it saved as a draft.
I will learn the but only while kicking and screaming. I think I’ve reached that stage in life where learning new stuff is annoying. 🤣

OK – first new theme – WAY too busy – YUK – but it’s called “Newsberg”, and I think it shows that what we want is a publisher or a news theme.
There is ANOTHER news theme that I just saw that is more static – easier on the eyes – better. I’m going to install that one in a moment.
Our previous theme was “Independent Publisher 2”.
The last theme I saw was obnoxious with a crawl across the top in a BIG gray area that’s just wasted damn space. I don’t know if that’s the latest or not.
Yes – that’s the one showing now. The one before was even worse. Big sliders of each post, sliding across the screen.
This one has authors and comment counts. I think we are all in agreement that we need those two items – correct? I personally think those are essential.

Honestly the top is the only part I mind of this one. I see you were able to fill some of that gray space with the generic banner.
I wanted to bannerize the whole background with the image, but that’s not possible.
This theme is “almost there” but not quite. However, I’ve “installed” them all, so we can go back if we find one that’s almost there, and nothing better shows up.
Cool. I guess if we HAVE to have that obnoxious crawl, we could maybe tweak it so it shows more than four posts?
Just a second – I was able to get Independent Publisher 2 by a kind of end-around through WordPress.com! We are going to have our old theme back!

Interestingly, the comment section looks the same. That might be beneficial if it still does ten-deep nesting without doing something pukey.

OK, good! Yes – I think letting WP.com vouch for members simplifies it a lot!
Big point is that I want authors to test the editing of comments by others on their articles on the new site. The new system may allow this and/or make it easier.
You can also try editing general comments through the “bubble” icon (Comments) in the WordPress banner at the top. It shouldn’t work, but maybe it does. Let me know what you find!
People are able to edit their own comments for 15 minutes, unless somebody replies, which locks the comment down.

Valerie edited a bunch of people’s comments that appear to be on her test article, using the “quick edit” item on the comments page, accessible through the LEFT speech bubble on the new site notifications banner (black band).
Don’t freak out – I asked her to do it! I want to test the maximum of that capability.

I just switched off two of the JetPack settings to see if it would let the new site notifications back into the notification feed. I was getting both of them earlier, but not any more.

Treat the new site as bottomless images. MOST of the old site images are there already now, due to imports! Almost all of them.

I just deactivated the new commenting system on the new site, so that it goes back to the current one for a while.

I get an ‘error’ message like this:
“Error: Please fill the required fields (name, email).”
But it shows my name/avatar and says underneath:
“You are commenting using your The Q Tree account.”
And I cannot ‘Like’ any comments, plus, in place of the Like-button there is the word “Loading…”
Sorry to even report this because I know you’re busy with so much other trouble-shooting right now.
Oh, and that gif I posted…the wolf running in the rain…is no longer displaying.

Okay…I think I know what you’re asking.
Go to the new site.
Then, look up at the ‘black bar’ across the top of your screen.
In the left hand side…look for where it says “The Q Tree”.
Put your cursor on that.
You should get a drop down that says…”Dashboard”.
Click on that.
That should open up your Author’s Dashboard, which is the way that Wolf has set it up there.

Yes – I need to copy our current customizations completely to the “old theme” on the new site. But before I do that, I want to get all the authors able to post on the new site.
Also, are you finished setting up the dashboard?
For the moment, I’m finished fiddling with administrative settings which affect everything you see, including the dashboard. I’m not micromanaging what you see – I’m playing with settings that cascade their effected coherently (we hope) down to what you see.
I’ve been on enough WP sites with that dashboard in the last 10 years, rolling with it is good for me.
Good. We will likely have to be flexible. The new commenting system has its own form of notifications. I may turn that one tonight, too.

I still can’t log in. I continue to get a msg that either my user name or password is incorrect.

No – I “intentionally” messed it up behind the scenes. I removed the “new” commenting system, put in the old one, and then let JetPack (meaning WP.com) handle authentication.
“You” (bakocarl per WP.com, with the email you’ve always used) have an account here as an author, and own all your old posts. What I’d like to do is have you try the following.
(1) log out of all windows for this site
(2) delete the cookies for THIS SITE ONLY
(3) verify that you can log into wordpress.com, using the password you always used for it. If not, then you need to reset your password there. You now have a WP.com PW that should work here
(4) try to log into here using your WP.com credentials
(5) if this fails, I will try to delete you and re-add you as an author.
OK. I’ll work my way through that.
You may not have to – try logging in now.
Or just try commenting and authoring. I don’t know which – but I changed things back BIGLY to the “new” system that was working OK.

At the moment, neither can I–it insists that I fill in all required fields (after having required none).
Hitting backarrow on the browser doesn’t send me to the prior version of the screen however. (It’s like those annoying sites where a link sends you to another link, so when you backarrow, you just go back to the link that sends you to the place you’re trying to backarrow out of. The guy who came up with that idea is another person I have beat-silly-with-a-rubber-hose fantasies about.)
