Someone once did video interviews of minorities in the inner cities, and the interviewees basically laughed at the standard justifications for no voter id. Because even in the poorest of neighborhoods, you can’t live without a photo ID of some kind, so they have it.
Nevertheless, I’d support free “IDs” for citizens who do not have or cannot get a driver’s license, concealed weapon permit, etc., just in case they missed people who truly have a problem getting some other form of ID. (Pro tip, by the way: a utility bill doesn’t identify you; it just means you have access to John Doe’s utility bill.)
A state ID is cheap. It’s not like the $110 I had to plunk down to renew my passport because the TSA won’t take my state’s drivers licenses. (Unfortunately, due to family issues, I fly a few times a year.)
as long as i guess there’s a portion of the ID that denotes your status as a citizen, then yes, i am all for free ID’s also – especially if it takes the “can’t afford it” excuse out of the mix.
now, places where they give out free licenses to anyone and register them to vote automagically at the time, that cannot count for sure.
i have long believed two things:
1) voting should not be easy as hillary and her friends like to say.
2) voting is pretty much fake and we know it down deep
i’d like to see both of those situations rectified in my lifetime.
Either mark it clearly or only give it to citizens. I actually had stated the latter, but on further thought, it should be available for legal residents as well, with distinguishing markings, so thank you for causing me to realize that.
Automatic voter registration has been a disaster. It might not be so bad IF — big IF — adequate safeguards are in place to prevent non-citizens from being registered AND there is a requirement to inform the prior address that you’ve changed your residency AND a requirement that that prior address actually do something about it, like deleting you from their voter rolls.
i know my daughters license has GIANT red “UNDER 21” markings up and down it as holograms. so they are very worried she may buy some beer, but marking her as a citizen would be racist… you just can’t fight that kind of logic 😉
to tack onto my “not easy voting” thing – i honestly think that voting should take planning, some amount of preparation and work and it should not be something you can almost accidentally do. the states are too high. people do not inform themselves as it is, so making it even easier to just run out and slam a vote down is not something i am fond of. it is a privilege, yes, but a duty that should be taken seriously as taught to me by my grandfathers on both sides of my family.
Back in the day, ours in MO said MINOR in big red letters like a watermark. So, on one’s 21st birthday, one stop was always at the Department of Revenue to get a new one.
I love the question about other countries being racist if they require IDs to vote. We’re the only ones that don’t. Try to argue us out of that one.

Living in Oklahoma, I have to show my picture ID, even though I have voted at the same place 40 years, know all the precinct workers and they know me. Now they don’t look at my drivers license “real hard”, but I still must present it (and I want to present it!!!!).
same. on election day (or soon after this past november) i posted on here a story i related regarding my experience just before going to the polls and then as i was there and came to the table to get my ballot… long story short the people there were almost offended that i attempted to show them my id. i confronted them with the fact that it seems like i could vote as many times as i wanted since they didn’t know me from a hole in the wall and i knew that my next door neighbor had not voted yet, i could have come in and voted as him first and then come back later as myself easily.
they didn’t care for that kind of interaction with me at all.
In Missouri, they can the back of our drivers license. It’s all connected somehow.
Even Mexico requires a Photo ID…with a fingerprint!
Like so many of the convoluted arguments the Left makes, their argument against requiring Photo ID for voting is laughable.
I hate it that the bad guys have destroyed our Honor System.
One of the nice things about our country has been that we didn’t require ‘papers’ to go about our daily lives and engage in the simple thing of voting in our elections.
Handing out ‘free stuff’ was something that started us down this slippery slope that we are still sliding down.
It provides the motivation for fraud.

Remember in 2016 when Obama, being interviewed by a Hispanic reporter, pretty much told the illegal community (non-citizens), that they could vote as a way to validate their US presence, and wouldn’t suffer any consequences (because it is an illegal act, which he failed to recognize!). Boy, that really pissed me off!!!
Vote and voter integrity is something I fear the most in our elections, as witnessed in 2018!
