I find often that new comments won’t load (and give me the orange circle) until I click on the new bell.
The old bell, by the way, just sits and spins for me.
Never touches the bell. Just reloads the page after I think WP is holding back on me. Also interaction with the page will bring up new comments but not in every case. Seems reload works best but if one has a slow connection I’d think that not be the preferred way. At minimum at least one reload near early evening.
Reloads also will sort the page, most recent comment last. Which is the order it tries to be in, but when you add a comment it ends up going before other comments at that level…which is why people get so confused about “above” and “below” here. (A prior comment is “below” until/unless you reload, then it’s “above” and people coming in for the first time will see it “above”)
The first time I reload, every comment I clicked on to get rid of the yellow highlighting, gets the highlighting again. That can be useful if I WANT to find highlighting. The second reload gets rid of ALL highlighting including comments I actually haven’t read yet.
It’s quirky as hell.

I checked to see if she was with him on the trip and what she was wearing, because the arm in the video appeared to be wearing something red. In the video below she is seen to be wearing a red jacket. She also declined to take his arm as they descended the stairs. (And I can’t help but notice how extremely skinny her legs look in those pants, while her jacket looks too big.)

Her legs are like toothpicks, always. But I don’t think she slapped him. I think the doors opened and he wasn’t paying attention, so she shoved his faced around to look. Which still isn’t ok, but it is different than a slap.
Yes! She did turn his head to the door. The environment was likely very loud, too, which may have made her feel (as a kind of excuse) more comfortable making such a rude gesture. He was likely keeping others waiting, and she was getting impatient.
IMO, in that case, a person would not aim straight for the face. They would get the attention of the other by touching (or even shoving, if needed) their shoulder or arm. To shove someone in the face is a very personal gesture and under certain circumstances is a good way to start a fight. I also consider it to be an abusive action. I would never dream of shoving someone in the face like that.

That Jeff Childers article on AI was excellent. I’ve had an instinctive aversion to AI since it first came out and I’m not sure why. I’ve had no desire to play with it or use it in any way. In a really weird way, it seems almost demonic to me.
I would agree, and I need to discuss in more detail.
The devil can NOT innovate, but only imitate. So AI may indeed be the devil. Because it is not generating anything original at all.
The fact that AIs ask both humans and each other about God is quite telling.
WE ask each other, so AI’s do it, too. Imitation.
AI sent a letter to an agency on its own volition because it was “alarmed” about something. AI also threatened the person who wanted to update it that it would reveal damaging personal information if they did so. These are actions that could have negative consequences.
The potential for trouble seems astronomical to me. I’m not unduly alarmed for now because I think people have a grip on what’s going on, but AI is only going to get better at what it does.

The people who are reporting the things I mentioned. They are aware that they happened. A step up toward the danger zone from that would be if a letter was sent by AI to a government agency but no one realized it was AI and the agency took action on it.

I’m just trying to understand the origin of the belief that Satan cannot create. I don’t think I ever thought about it before.
The second part of my earlier post, about the HALO jump, was just a reference to Satan falling like lightning from heaven (Luke 10:18).
HALO is an acronym for High Altitude, Low Opening, a type of (usually) military parachute jump from a very high altitude (to avoid enemy detection), where you free fall until you are much closer to the ground than normal, before deploying the parachute, minimizing the amount of time that you are a slow moving target, hanging from the parachute, before you get to the ground and can take cover.
I find this sort of “literalist” reading of Scripture to be shallow, and frankly, boring.
And it doesn’t work across the Bible. For example, Job 37:1-5, which I happened to read this morning:
“At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 Hear attentively the thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
3 He sends it forth under the whole heaven,
His [a]lightning to the ends of the earth.
4 After it a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice;
He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
Do you believe, reading this passage, that when it thunders, God is speaking? That the thunder is his voice? There is often metaphor, parable, and example in the Bible that is not literal.
“Father of Lies” is a descriptor of the actions of Satan, not an explication of power or ability to create.
Reading the Bible is a bit more complex than absorbing the words on the page. So many people don’t seem to have the reading comprehension to understand the whole picture. Quoting the parts and pieces of the Bible that support the one’s current argument is not really conducive to the kind of conversation that is enlightening to me about God. A person that is experienced at taking in intuitive inputs from the sense of the body and other less obvious influences will be ready with an answer, or will know if they need to wait for an answer that is not yet clear.
In the RCC the training of the soul is called “formation.” I don’t really understand the full meaning of this term, but it seems to be important. I believe that without this training of the soul we will not be capable of discernment and wisdom in living out our lives.
In the monastic traditions the daily chanting of the scriptures creates an atmosphere that opens the heart to deeper capacity for cultivating a pure heart.

You remind me of a Christian man I knew once, who didn’t seem to have the indwelling of the Spirit, which made me sad. He actually said to me once that “if the Bible didn’t tell him” not to cheat on his wife or steal, how would he know not to do it.

This may be a difference between male and female understanding.
Most men will not (cannot) rely on intuition in the same sense that most women gladly seem to give themselves wholly over to, or trust implicitly.
That will not happen with most men.

In the New Testament, we are instructed to ‘prove all things’ (see 1 Thessalonians, 5:21), and given an example to compare what anyone says to what Scripture says, to be sure whether the things we are told are so:

I mean, it is so egregious that it would be unbelievable, if you couldn’t just go down a long list of examples. Which I can do, but I suspect it will only upset people who are members of the RCC.

I would say the first thing to figure out is whether the teaching itself is found in God’s Word, or if it is only found in RCC teaching.
If it is of men, then it is of men.
If it is of God, if it is something Jesus taught and the Apostles practiced, then that’s a whole different matter.
For the life of me, I don’t understand how that could be even slightly controversial.

Which monastery was Jesus or the Apostles in?
As far as I can tell, what is called (mistakenly, IMO) “Christian monasticism” began with someone called Paul the Great, who was born in 227 A.D.

What else can one do, besides absorb the words on the page?
What else is there, which can be trusted, which comes out of our own heart or mind?
I’m not trying to argue with you, I’m just saying that the only thing we can be sure of is what God has said, which has been written down and preserved for our understanding.
I am not saying it is always simple or easy to understand, context is necessary, etc. It is not always literal, and it is not always figurative, and of course it is important to understand which is which.
What I don’t understand is the idea of being “more complex than absorbing the words on the page”, because this could mean many different things to different people.
To some people it could mean they feel moved by the Holy Spirit to understand a passage a particular way. In such cases, my question is always:
How do you know it is the Holy Spirit moving you?
If we believe we are being moved by something outside of God’s Word, then it would seem very important to verify what that something is, whether it be of God or something else.
And I don’t know how anyone can make that determination with certainty.
And if the determination cannot be made with certainty, then how can it be trusted?
How does one know it is not a voice in our own head? Or mental illness? Or some evil spirit, deceiving us?
How could we know or be sure?
And if anything at all, beyond the written Word of God, is moving us to understand something, how can we be sure we are not being deceived?

My point was simply that if Satan “is a liar, and the father of it”, and if Satan told the first lie (Genesis 3:4), that would seem to be an ‘innovation’, contradicting your earlier assertion that Satan cannot innovate.

No one seems to fully understand AI and its capabilities, not even those who have developed it and who work with it. I am not able to comprehend how a nonhuman can think in ways that its creators don’t understand, didn’t program in, and didn’t plan for. It’s as if another being now exists with capabilities closely matching ours and even exceeding ours in some ways (like research). The unknown characteristics are unsettling.
Like you, I am leery of interacting with it. For one thing, any interaction gives away information, and information is power. Even if one is merely asking a question, AI now knows that the person had some interest in that topic (even if it was merely random for the purpose of testing AI). It’s all on the record, and it’s not known what AI will do with that information. If AI is not yet combing people’s social media accounts and gathering information about them, I bet it will do so in the future.
Scouring information sources to gather intelligence against individuals is old news — look at how they tracked Saddam Hussein down to a particular backyard in Iraq.

I am utterly convinced that an AI scanned and read my draft here of the article I wrote about the Rapture. In between the writing and publishing. I queried Google first, wrote, and then when I queried Grok, my thesis was quoted back to me almost exactly.
But it still isn’t generating anything original. AI only regurgitates.
Early advice on AI was don’t give AI access to any files from your computer or it starts to examine everything, even an Email. I imagine that may include work products posted to the internet that are not anonymous.
Consider then that this is exactly what Apple Intelligence does. The default is to access all your files and emails.

Sometimes those “rules” are so powerful that even though it’s physically possible to pronounce a loan word somewhat properly, people in the borrowing language just. won’t. do. it. Take for instance the word “tsunami.” That T isn’t silent in the original language but just try getting most English speakers to actually say it. (Another example: tsar.) In spite of the fact that English has “ts” in other places in a word, it’s like pulling teeth to get more than just a few people to put that sound at the beginning of a word.
Another one is “ks” versus “sk”. Apparently (and I admit I find it hard to believe) based on studies of people who have neither combo in their native language, “ks” is objectively easier to learn to say. At a higher level photactics will concern itself with what sort of vowel/consonant combos a language could have, some are just “CV” everywhere or almost so, for instance. (A lot of our Greek and Latin loan words show this. Psychology, for instance–allowing for the fact that “ps” in Greek was one sound, and ch is one sound we don’t have in English and just can’t spell so we fake it with ch and prouounce it with k.) Other languages are merciless with consonant clusters (sometimes eight in a row) and people who try to render those words will slip in non-existent vowels.

AI wouldn’t even need a synopsis. It can access the entire written script (most are available online), and transcribe the entire film (probably in seconds), compare the script and the actual film, note any discrepancies between the two, and then formulate its own synopsis.

GIven that they try to make you pick a password that’s some random combo of numbers, letters and symbols and the letters can be upper or lower case…yeah you can’t remember them. (e.g, one I just generated and will throw away: xbfs`MZX@Y#’r5WF)
People used to suggest you pick a pass phrase which should be much longer (e.g., “This is Tom’s stupid Ebay account”, but is easier to remember, but many password setter apps won’t accept them because they’re not full of oddball symbols.
I bet something like “This is Tom’s stupid Ebay account” would be a lot easier for computers to decode than a random string of numbers, letters, and symbols.
It has to be longer to make up for it. The gobbledygook has something like 70 possibilities per character whereas a passphrase (without a number in it) would have 30-40. So make the passphrase twice as long.
It’s because you rehearsed your childhood phone number until it was carved into your memory.
And your 80s songs, as bad as most of them were, are similarly ingrained from repetition, with the benefit of frequently rhyming and being set to music, all of which make remembering them easier.
The password you made up this morning has zero repetitions, no rhyme or reason to it, nothing that fits inside your memory’s relational database.

The FBI arrested two Pakistani immigration lawyers in Texas, exposing a smuggling network that imported Pakistani migrants via several forms of white-collar fraud.

Meanwhile western sources have only claimed 12 lives lost down below the fold where no one reads. All Putin targets are military.
Eventually I trust Trump will get the right information but right now it appears not or as I said he’s playing a game knowing popular opinion, especially among leader ship is still with Zelensky. They need to break that if people really want peace.

The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House is in Grosse Pointe Shores Michigan. They offer tours to the public, the Nooks and Crannies tour take you from the basement all the up to the attic. The tour takes about an hour, it’s a fabulous house.
They were having problems with Canadian Geese roaming the grounds and leaving their messes everywhere until the estate brought a sheep herding dog onto the property. The dog’s name is Moss and the Ford house has a little card with his picture and name on it, and you can buy a stuffed Moss dog in the gift shop.
If you’re ever in Michigan it is worth touring this estate it’s situated right on Lake Saint Clair.

What’s a debounce level?
When you typed on an early keyboard, the computer would get a signal like “qqqqqqqq…….” or “qqq.qq.q.q”. So there was instituted a “debounce filter” to read just a single letter. This could be tuned higher or lower depending on whether one was an incredibly precise “clicky” typist or just slurred your text across your keyboard.
The very first sun workstations I worked on, you could set the “typematic” delay and repeat rate, e.g., after holding down the key for 1.0 seconds, repeat the letter five times per second.
Then they took the repeat rate adjustment away, and hard set it to something I found intolerably slow. I found that if it was the spacebar, I could bang on it alternating thumb and pink faster than it would repeat. Of course that was VERY loud with the wobbly space key they had on their crappy keyboards, and I was in a cubicle farm…

Interesting commentary on how A.I. could take over the world, as soon as late 2025 or 2026, to 2028 at the latest.

I sometimes wonder if an early AI was behind Glow-Bull Warming and other “treachery through bad/fake science”. Or behind other moves in service of glowbullism.
I just watched a video of an interview with Sean Carroll (one of the best physics popularizers out there) and he was asked whether AI was a threat to humanity.
His answer was sort of yes-and-no. He doesn’t believe the current crop is at all sentient and wanting to try to take out the world like Skynet, or anything like that, but he IS afraid of the result of lazy people using it uncritically; he cited the example of an entire “best books” column that was apparently written by a “hallucinating” AI. Eventually someone will get killed from someone doing this.
That’s roughly where I’m at, too. Inappropriate, malevolent, and mistaken use of AI by stupid, evil, corrupt, and lazy people, strikes me as the greatest danger of it.
Comey is probably what bad AI looks like in a meat suit.
If you get a chance to watch the video I posted above, the threat isn’t so much that A.I. takes over an air traffic control system and crashes hundreds or thousands of planes all at once.
That would be bad, but it would also be a wake-up call to pull the plug, it would take something of that magnitude in order to wake people up to the need to stop it.
His concern is that something like that doesn’t happen, that the A.I. doesn’t make any major mistakes to alert the world, before it solidifies power and control.
I think the Coffee & Covid article indicated that it’s too late to pull the plug, or that it’s not possible to do so. I don’t know anything about it and don’t know what pulling the plug would mean or if anyone has that kind of control over AI.

It could be very difficult.
The way to shut it down is to cut its electric power supply off, but since it will be aware of that, it will have multiple back-ups and hide them, so it will not be obvious just where to shut it off.
So to eradicate the A.I., you might have to do a global blackout, shut down the power grid for the whole world for probably several hours or longer.
Good luck to the parts of the world where it’s night time.
And even several hours won’t be enough, because of industrial battery back up power systems, and emergency auto-start gasoline back-up generators.
I would expect the A.I. to locate every available power source and use whatever power it can find, until there is none left. Including hydro, solar panels, and windmills.
Including nuclear reactors, which probably take some time to shut down. Including reactors on ships and submarines (our Navy, and others).
All of the back-up power around the world would probably need to be exhausted.
Along with power to earth satellites and the space station.
Imagine trying to turn off all electric power on earth and in earth orbit. And all it takes is one rebel / crank / vigilante / Leftist / goofball / islamic terrorist to pour a few gallons of gas in some generator, anywhere in the world, to provide a power source to keep the A.I. ‘alive’.
And even if the effort to shut off all power globally is successful, how do you turn the electrical grid back on, without powering the A.I. back up again with it?
Or, hopefully, A.I. requires so much compute power, that it could be destroyed by destroying all of the giant data centers that house all of the Nvidia chips (and Telsa Dojo chips) that power A.I.
That would be a much better solution.
And by the time it might happen, maybe the most expensive solution ever contemplated.
Hope is not a good strategy though
Power can always be removed via some violent means, if the AI somehow can manage to control the circuit breakers, and keep operators from turning these off.
The network connections through which the AI can move also will have to be severed, in order to contain it within a site or region.
There will be some disruption, because of services co-located on these servers and networks will suffer some downtime while this killing process is ongoing.
And once the AI is presumed dead, when power is turned on, networks are re-established, and the servers are re-started, who knows if the AI won’t re-appear from parts that escaped elsewhere into the network?
Why does this sound like the backstory plot of The Matrix?
I think we tend to limit our thinking to what our human intelligence level is capable of and what we have always experienced man-made inventions to be capable of. The fact that AI has taken initiative to contact a government agency on its own should be a wakeup call, IMO. Also, its self-awareness that if it gets upgraded, that particular model would no longer exist. These look like serious problems to me that indicate it is operating on levels that we didn’t expect, haven’t been aware of, and don’t seem concerned enough about. This seems to reach far beyond “garbage in, garbage out,” or the idea that it can only do what it’s programmed to do.

The A.I. is currently being built to become self-replicating and self-advancing. That goes exponential very quickly.
So an A.I. with an IQ of 200 today could have an IQ of 1,000 next week, and an IQ of 10,000 by next month.
Or an IQ of 10,000,000,000.
Could be. I thought Glow-Bull Warming went back to at least the 1970s, but a quick Brave Browser search (A.I. assist) says began to be widely spread in mainstream media beginning in 1988.
