I went off on a rant about investments last night but neglected to mention an important point. My rant centered around long-term companies requiring only one idiot to sink the ship.
You’d think, then, that there would be an industry built around spotting incoming idiots and dodging out of the way of their losses. A mutual fund, perhaps.
This crashes into something I discovered a number of years ago. There are more mutual funds traded on the NYSE than there are stocks. To project this in a ridiculous example, let’s say there are only 3 stocks — A, B, and C — and there are 20 mutual funds. Mutual fund 1 could invest 25% in A, 25% in B, 25% in C, and 25% in cash. Mutual fund 2 might invest 20% in A, 20% in B, 20% in C, and 40% in cash. The great majority of funds lag the market (thus the growth in index funds). In addition, funds tend to trade at times inconvenient to their investors’ tax positions, reaping gains when investors might want to keep quiet.
Now let’s talk about the big movers in the market, FAANG stocks [ https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/faang-stocks.asp ], Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google. That’s where the biggest gains have been made in recent years. Do you see Rip Curl or Cracker Barrel in there? That’s how much attention has been paid by mutual funds staving off incoming idiocy.
Instead, mutual funds have also been oriented to The Big Score to draw attention away from their general incompetence.
I should note that I used to subscribe to Forbes and had maybe 20 years of issues when it dawned on me that the real world didn’t work that way. So I quit subscribing and pulped them.
I took 3 years of German in high school, and memorizing all of the “THEs” that go with a noun in the nominative, genitive, dative and accusative cases was really a pain!
English has its quirks with all the homonyms, “interesting” spellings that have resulted from the etymology of words, pronunciations that don’t seem to follow a pattern, and exceptions to rules; but IMO the gender designations and variations on articles like “the” in other languages make them unnecessarily difficult and make no sense. (And no doubt my opinion stems from my being used to my native language. 😅)

COMMENTARY FOR PSALMS 13
The psalmist complains that God had long withdrawn. He earnestly prays for comfort. He assures himself of an answer of peace.
– God sometimes hides his face, and leaves his own children in the dark concerning their interest in him: and this they lay to heart more than any outward trouble whatever. But anxious cares are heavy burdens with which believers often load themselves more than they need. The bread of sorrows is sometimes the saint’s daily bread; our Master himself was a man of sorrows. It is a common temptation, when trouble lasts long, to think that it will last always. Those who have long been without joy, begin to be without hope. We should never allow ourselves to make any complaints but what drive us to our knees. Nothing is more killing to a soul than the want of God’s favour; nothing more reviving than the return of it. The sudden, delightful changes in the book of Psalms, are often very remarkable. We pass from depth of despondency to the height of religious confidence and joy. It is thus, ver. 5. All is gloomy dejection in ver. 4; but here the mind of the despondent worshipper rises above all its distressing fears, and throws itself, without reserve, on the mercy and care of its Divine Redeemer. See the power of faith, and how good it is to draw near to God. If we bring our cares and griefs to the throne of grace, and leave them there, we may go away like Hannah, and our countenances will be no more said, 1Sa 1:18|. God’s mercy is the support of the psalmist’s faith. Finding I have that to trust to, I am comforted, though I have no merit of my own. His faith in God’s mercy filled his heart with joy in his salvation; for joy and peace come by believing. He has dealt bountifully with me. By faith he was as confident of salvation, as if it had been completed already. In this way believers pour out their prayers, renouncing all hopes but in the mercy of God through the Saviour’s blood: and sometimes suddenly, at others gradually, they will find their burdens removed, and their comforts restored; they then allow that their fears and complaints were unnecessary, and acknowledge that the Lord hath dealt bountifully with them.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

I certainly don’t have a fear of sunlight, but the opposite! I am currently suffering from NEED of sunlight. I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, so every year about this time is miserable for me.
I’m one of those people for whom depression manifests in my physical body, rather than in my overall mood. So I can stay positive, but man, does my body hurt. And it takes me off guard most years, because my emotional state is fine, but then I realize that my crawling out of bed and struggling to get out of a chair is just the SAD again, not something I did physically hard to make me hurt. Every freaking October.
But by the middle of January, I feel just fine again. For a long time I thought it was in my head, but when I finally talked about it, several people told me that they saw it happen to me every year.
Have read that before, in places with significant cloud cover, in the winter. Moods affected. Shorter days in winter months, in play.
Commonly mention to DW, about mid Fall, I’m ready for Springtime.
It’s pretty crazy; as soon as the Solstice passes and the days start to lengthen, it only takes about three weeks for me to improve immensely. Everybody notices.
There has to be some good explanation of SAD. One thing I’m thinking, is that you may very well have strong seasonal variation in the different thyroid hormone levels. TSH, T4, and T3 can vary in some people because of the season – and the neurotransmitters involved in depression [which are partially gut-dependent – a further complication] are downstream from thyroid hormone levels. And then there is melatonin, highly dependent on near-IR levels and light, intersecting with all that stuff.
Since T4 half-life is rather long, resets in the thyroid system are almost seasonal, too. Long weeks to short months.
You also live pretty far north – daily light has to be terrible now.
Complicated business! But I’m curious if you see high variability in thyroid numbers. They may all technically be in the normal range, but seem to randomly move within that range, depending on what time of year you get tested. And if you get tested the same time every year, the numbers may appear not to vary much.
Yes, I get tested every March, so I probably wouldn’t see the thyroid variation.
The sun is TERRIBLE right now, for more than one reason. One of those annoyances is that it is so low in the sky, it is always shining straight into my eyes when I’m driving. It sucks!
I think because of my Northern European ancestry, my internal clock just shuts down in the winter. Ten thousand years ago, my ancestors would have “denned up” in November and not come out until February.

The SAD lamps do work. Our daughter lived in Cambridge, UK for seven years, and the very first thing she purchased when arriving there was a SAD lamp. I’d never heard of one, but every year we would visit, and it sure does help (although I do not have any “SAD” symptoms)

Weirdly, I think the best thing conservative Jews can do right now, is to “man up” and “woman up” against “Jewish voices for communism” – because the KEY to this attempt to revive a Nazi-like government in America, is – super-cunningly – Jewish UNITY, which validates the claims of the antisemites. These people (demons – whatever they are) have managed to invert things, so that Jewish political unity leaking out of ethnic unity has become damaging to Jews as a whole.
It’s an adaptive replay of what happened in Germany. They need the spectre of communism – loudly and financially backed by idiot leftist Jews – to scare mainstream Americans into giving authoritarian powers to the government, which powers up to the point that all those in and out of government are scared to go up against it. Fuentes’ reflexive light-denial reaction to the Holocaust is a serious mistake, and his pig-headedness on his own bad take of World War II is going to be costly for the world.

NYT reporting an additional grand jury related to the “grand conspiracy” investigation led by US Atty Jason Reding Quinones will be empaneled in Fort Pierce, FLA where one judge will preside over the proceedings:
Judge Aileen Cannon.
Now I am old enough to remember how the media and social media influencers like @glennkirschner2 viciously attacked Cannon for her careful scrutiny of the documents case, This was back when it was cool to blast any judge for pushing back on government claims–now, of course, it’s the exact opposite.
In Sept 2022, Cannon wisely appointed a special master to oversee sensitive materials seized during the MAL raid, expressing doubt over some of the Biden DOJ’s claims and calling out DOJ leaks to media. (It was overturned on appeal but she was right all along.)
Then her cautious handling of the case post-indictment and her clashes with Jack Smith’s team–she almost kicked David Harbach out of the courtroom one day after growing weary of his temper tantrums aimed at her–earned her increased ire by same “legal experts.” She faced daily harassment including a petition drive by Kirshner demanding her recusal. A woman in Texas was charged and convicted for making death threats against Cannon.

I also will say this does not mean Cannon will give this DOJ everything they want. She was tough on both sides during the documents case; she’s very smart, prepared, and appropriately skeptical of most presentations before her court. This is not a layup for DOJ nor do I think they want one.
I think she is great because it will show Americans what a FAIR IMPARTIAL JUDGE looks like.

His remarkable record of service does not permit him to go against the Commander in Chief just because he disagrees with him politically. Starbucks can do what a company I worked for did. Close the Union shops in MA and built new in a red state AL.
According to the video, employees make $30/hour in pay and benefits. I don’t know how much of that is take-home pay, but that seems very high for fast food. If it’s part-time, entry level work as the video says, then people should know they will need supplemental income.
That is $60K a year. I never made that much.
Comparisons are made between what the CEO makes and what the workers make. One woman said the CEO makes that much money “sitting behind a desk.” The ignorance is palpable. The CEO is dealing with making sure all the stores are run properly and that they are keeping up with trends and customer satisfaction. He probably has to deal with stockholders. There are regulations, insurance, workplace safety, employment law, on-site appearance and cleanliness and adherence to laws regarding buildings, and a host of other things. He has legal issues to handle, accounting, computer and software issues, decisions about advertising, etc. In short, he is what makes all the jobs possible.
Envy. Nobody wants to admit that good CEOs pay for themselves very quickly.
IMO, it appears that the communist Mamdummi envisions NYC to have a “pilot program” of city-owned-and-stocked-and-managed grocery stores, shops, and retail facilities. This is on top of the plan to have “free child care’ for the city.
