This DePat Tuesday Open Thread honors the author of the original Tuesday open thread on this site, namely the late Susie Sampson, a.k.a. Deplorable Patriot, among her other handles, pen names, etc.

At one time, DePat handled FOUR daily open threads here, in addition to taking care of her relatives, choir duties, and numerous other responsibilities. She was a powerhouse – a dynamo – a true force of nature.
DePat’s faith in Trump, Q, “The Plan”, the White Hats, and “the anons” in general, was legendary. Although I didn’t always agree with her quick acceptance of some sketchier evidence and fringier theories, I will gladly admit to “coming around” to numerous so-called “conspiracy theories” which she championed first. I was always careful to give her credit for being right, too, when I had been wrong.
It is impossible to overstate how much DePat did for not only this site, but for her country. I urge all to say a quick prayer of thanks, whenever you think of her, for the privilege of knowing, in life or after death, such an exemplary human being, and lover of God.
And thank you, Susie, for the firm foundation which you left us, when you were called to your true home!

He, her, she, his, etc., come from ancient predecessors of our modern-day pronouns.
But hero does not derive from those words. It traces back to the Latin heros and the Greek hērōs, meaning “demi-god” (and might even predate the Greek).
Of course, from ancient times until fairly recently, it went without saying that a hero was a masculine defender and protector. There was no question of its being related to the feminine.
If feminazis want to say that words containing the same series of letters (e.g., “h-e-r”) are related, then they can call themselves herons, herrings, hernias, hermaphrodites, herbicides, heretics, and the like. Must. be. consistent. 😂

perhaps I asked the simple question incorrectly. Either way AI can NOT be trusted. Nor am I inclined to lay, AI games, to shape the correct answer.

.So, just a few thoughts about trading stocks…..
The price of a stock at a given moment depends on the confluence of many factors — some of which are zigging and some of which are zagging. To illustrate this simply, there may be a long-term market trend, a short-term market trend, a long-term trend on the stock, a short-term trend on the stock, and random fluctuation on the amount of funds to be invested.
So, when it comes time for me to sell a stock, I almost always place limit orders (at a particular price) instead of market orders (whatever it is now). That way, I don’t have to worry about the traders in the market not getting their morning caffeine at the proper temp and opening low, shaving $300 off my trade.
Since I’m selecting a price, it’s generally a buck-or-two higher than yesterday’s market range, so as to skim off a random fluctuation tomorrow…..and it’s “Good ‘Til Cancelled” so it can execute in the next few days.
Near the end of last month, I put some Philips 66 stock up. So far as I could tell, Chevron was going to skim the cream of the Venezuela deal, and the Persian Gulf risk was going to start collapsing. So I eyeballed a position better than its current peak and placed a limit order.
…..and spent the next several days fighting software. Turns out, when you make a trade, certain documents work off the trade date, some work off the “settlement date” [typically 3 business days later], and some get deferred due to holidays. In the meantime, Schwab cycles between “open orders”, “executed orders”, cash flows, and available funds.
In the meantime, I’ve had medical issues and stress. Only today have I seen things in the proper boxes from my August orders, and only tomorrow can I actually straighten things out.
In the meantime, my trade executed — but when I kept looking for it, the software kept saying “the order wasn’t ready yet”, “the order isn’t available”, “there are no orders in that status”, “you still have that stock in your account”, “you don’t have that stock in your account”, “you don’t have cash in that account”, and so on.
Today I no longer had the stock and had the available cash. I had been getting nervous.
Walk away. Head 2,800 miles east. it’ll get a whole lot better.
Nah, this is just a technical detail on the joy of holding stocks.
It’s not directly a thing about being in California.
As an aside, I used to regularly make money buying Apple at 15 and selling at 20. Over and over and over — because that was the range that kept getting random fluctuations.

A poster I remember seeing in high school was the famous quote, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Ironically, my high school taught me almost nothing about the greatest threat to Western Civilization for the last 1400 years: Islam.
Since then I’ve learned a lot about Islam. I served in the US Marine Corps from 2005 to 2010, deployed to Iraq in 2008-2009, and worked in the Defense Intelligence world for nearly a decade. Many Americans have forgotten what ought not to have been forgotten about Islam, and I hope this thread helps fill in some of the gaps.
