Precious metals continue their downward slide. This is partially due to manipulation, but the fact of the matter is that investors will put their money where it will make a return. With interest rates going up, they actually like dollars, because dollars earn more interest. Gold, to them, is a way to not lose money most of the time.
JWST Update
JWST instrument commissioning proceeds apace.
NASA made a blog post explaining one of the more practical aspects of the James Web Space Telescope. Where can it point?
It must perpetually present the heat shield towards the sun, or it’s toast. Literally. Well, “toast” is a relative term; getting up to room temperature would be bad for the optics and sensors.
So it seems like JWST can only look at half of the sky, basically the same half someone on Earth would see at midnight, with the sun on the other side of the big heat shield we call Planet Earth. And it doesn’t rotate like we do here, which lets us see almost all of the sky between just-after-sunset and just-before-sunrise, with the thin band in between only up when the sun is up and thus washed out. So even though we can see most of the sky on any given night, JWST can only see half of the sky (albeit 24/7, there being no daytime for it), right? [Note: I am ignoring the effect–on the Earth observer–of latitude, which permanently hides part of the sky from him or her, but on the other hand allows other parts of the sky to be seen any time at night.]
Yes, and no. JWST in orbit about the sun, once a year (since it sits at Earth/Sun L2), so six months from now, it can see the other half of the sky, just like our midnight astronomer here on Earth.
But it’s a bit more restricted than that. The JWST mirror cannot be moved. It’s not on any kind of a swivel. It cannot swivel either left-right or up-down in the picture above.
To aim the telescope, the entire spacecraft has to be rotated, with gyros. In the picture above it can be rotated 360 degrees about a “vertical” axis, keeping the sunshade where it is but turning it (and the antenna) like a record on a record player. (This is the yaw direction of rotation.)
It can also tip, just a bit, up and down, “nodding” basically, this is called the pitch direction. It has about a 50 degree travel in the pitch direction, as shown in the following two diagrams.
When JWST’s sun shield is face on to the sun, that shield is getting the maximum amount of solar radiation, and thus this is called the “hot” attitude. When the telescope is pointed halfway towards being pointed directly away from the sun, the sun shield is presented to the sun at a 45 degree angle and thus collects 70.7% percent as much energy as in the “hot” attitude (i.e., the sine of 135 degrees). We don’t dare tip the spacecraft any more than that lest the actual telescope (and sensors) be exposed directly to the sun (and thereby become “toast”).
The practical effect is that the patch of sky directly opposite of the sun cannot be looked at by JWST; that part lies outside the telescope’s “field of regard.” However if you actually want to look at something there, you can wait three months and get it when that patch of sky is at a 90 degree angle to the sun because JWST has moved 90 degrees around the sun.
Over the course of one year, JWST has access to the entire sky.

As to the current commissioning activity, at least part of it is “astrometric calibration.” In other words, if we tell the telescope to point at such-and-such pitch and yaw, what does each sensor actually see? There might be a tiny bit of error from what we would expect, no instrument is exact straight from the fabrication. We’ll be able to specify an exact right ascension and declination (the analogues to longitude and latitude in the sky) and know exactly how to rotate the spacecraft to look at that point.
There’s a lot more to it than that, but I’m going to let NASA explain it:

Do you remember the moon rocket that was undergoing a “wet dress rehearsal”?
Well, it has gone through several of them, and the test was a success. They found problems they now know they need to correct.
Yes, I called it a success, even though the spacecraft would have likely malfunctioned if it had launched. Because that’s the purpose of testing: to find such problems. We found them. A test isn’t a failure just because it found something wrong; it’s a failure if it fails to find problems that do exist.
If you remember the attention given to something called Biosphere 2 about 25 years ago, that’s another example. Biosphere 2 was an attempt to build a large, perfectly sealed greenhouse and see if people could live in it indefinitely, growing their own food and being sustained as part of a balanced system (plants to absorb the CO2 they exhaled and generate O2 for them to breathe).
The idea is if we are ever to start living in space or on other planets, we need to know how to do this, at least long enough to “terraform” other planets (make them more earthlike and establish an earthlike biosphere on them so we can live there as if we were native to the place). A long manned space mission probably won’t be able to bring several years’ worth of food along; we’ll have to grow it…inside a tin can that had better not leak. The only resource “out there” is sunlight (and that’s the one thing that could get in and out of Biosphere 2 once the doors were sealed).
It was a test of our ability to make a closed system.
And the test “failed.” The concrete in the structure continued to absorb oxygen even after we thought it was done curing.
But it wasn’t a failure; we learned a lot from it. Sure on one level our first attempt at building a closed system “failed” because it couldn’t sustain people for two years, but no one actually expected it to work perfectly; the point of the exercise was to discover what we don’t know. And for that, it worked beautifully.
Biosphere 2 is still standing; you can take tours of it. It’s being used for botanical research because it’s the most isolated environment on earth (even with people traipsing about on tours).

You have a much more romantic view of Biosphere 2 than I do. It was basically a grant scam that had little if any scientific support. There was no research into how much photosynthesis was needed (number of plants) to support x number of humans. I had not heard of the concrete absorption problem you mentioned but that sure would not have stopped them even if they knew of it beforehand. They were that arrogant, as a group.
Took them awhile to find a gullible enough rich guy to write checks. And they squabbled a lot among themselves. In the end, the project failed because the plants could not process enough CO2, levels of which continued to rise no matter what was tried.
I found it an amusing and intriguing demo project. Wildly expensive, and nearly killed people — in the tradition of other intriguing demo projects. Best to have done it this way than initially tried it on Mars.

Do you have some evidence that connects those two phenomena? Side question: how could your conclusion eliminate (render irrelevant) my stated fact about the lack of research into the amount of plants needed for human life support?
Answer to the side question. If the increase in CO2 was due to concrete curing, this would not be an issue if either a future habititat didn’t use concrete…or the concrete was allowed to fully cure before it was stocked. The plants would thus have a much smaller amount of CO2 to deal with, and would likely be able to deal with it.
The rain forest biome alone had a gargantuan quantity of plants in it.
There was actually a much, much smaller dry run, one person in a much smaller enclosure with plants. She was in there for (IIRC) a week, and would have suffocated in that time if the plants were inadequate to the task. (Actually she would have aborted the test long before.) Based on this they knew how much plant life it would take to counterbalance a human, at least in terms of air (and in any case, this could be computed from known data). So they had good reason to believe the plants were up to the task of dealing with the humans’ CO2 in the larger habitat. The question IT was intended to settle was whether food and water would be sustained.

Here is a Julidochromis marlieri wandering around a tank of mbuna (rock-grazing mouthbrooding cichlids from Lake Malawi). He’s got a Neolamp. tret in there also.
Most of the mbuna used to be called Pseudotropheus, but they’ve been shuffled, riffled, and redealt. Now they can be Melanochromis, Maylandia, Metriaclima, or Pseudotropheus, and probably some others.

Note that they have more contrast between the dark and the light, and that the light areas are more rectangular with sharp edges and aligned correctly.
When you talk about good breeders and sources for your fish, you want ones that fit the type standard.
Julies are among my favorite fish from Lake T. They are substrate spawners (though sometimes lay eggs on the roofs of caves), they never grow huge (females are somewhat larger than males), they’re not wildly aggressive, and they are prolific.
J. regani are almost exactly the same as J. marlieri in form, color, and habit. The major difference is that regani don’t have vertical cross-stripes. Quality fish still have clean stripes. Regani can have some blue.
At this point, it gets a bit more weird — partially because I’m not totally on board with the lumper and splitter taxonomists.
My understanding is that the remaining Julidochromis are dickfeldi, ornatus, transcriptus, and marksmithi (<- I’d never previously heard of this). I suspect that Chalinochromis — which has brichardi, cyanophleps, and popelini — belong in the same group.

These yellow fishes are among my favorite though I have a cousin whose name is Mark Smith… heh… I suppose lots of people do.
I saw the baby fish when it was above (behind?) the darker rock and swam past the white pebbles. My dad used to raise guppies and I’ve often had fish tanks. It’s a lot of work and I quickly gave up because the water from my well has a lot of iron. I know you can get large bottles of sea water for your tank, but I haven’t seen good fresh water for sale at places that sell fish. I still have a tank or two (perhaps 20 gallons) and some supplies. My next door neighbor and her husband built an outdoor pond with koi beside their gazebo. Would love to have one of those. I especially like her large yellow koi. Even with the bears and other wildlife, her fish live in the pond year round and do fine.
One major bit of koi pond design is to maximize drop-off. Many critters will wade in and can swim, but few are willing to dive in.

Pennsylvania Republican voters are in a tough situation, and it’s not really fair to say they “deserved” it. Both the voters and party spent two years donating, volunteering, and laying out the ground work for a popular MAGA candidate—Sean Parnell—but he was forced out of the race at the last minute by bad actors and a rigged court system. They didn’t build up other candidates because they thought Parnell’s run was both inevitable and the best chance of winning. Losing Parnell was a tough blow, and now voters are being asked to vote for a carpet-bagger who has never advanced a Republican position in his life. I get why Trump endorsed Oz—name recognition, media empire reach, unlikely to be forced out of the race—but voters are understandably angry at the rotten situation. It’s just like 2020 where Trump supporters did everything right, but still got screwed over by the Deep State. Nobody deserved this.

The total lunar eclipse and “blood moon” are essentially the same phenomenon. A super moon just means that the moon is relatively close to earth when it is full (or eclipsed, which can only happen when the moon would otherwise be full); supermoons are very over-hyped IMHO. The flower moon, i am going to guess, is what May full moons are invariably called. The moon is going to have some “nickname” like this no matter what time of year it is–apparently the Farmer’s Almanac came up with a lot of them. So ANY full moon will have a cute name; this one having one is a nothingburger.
So basically, it boils down to it’s a total lunar eclipse. Those are not uncommon, every couple of years or so (lunar eclipses, not necessarily total lunar eclipses, happen 2-5 times a year; on average you can see half of them). Happening to fall when the moon is near perigee, I suppose happens one time in every six or so.
So, boiling it down, it’s a lunar eclipse with the moon at or near perigee. Not a big deal.
It’s a matter of perspective. You have yours, the luciferians, etc. have theirs. What is important is what might compel them to act out their beliefs that often involve violence. A blood moon?

The post is really good speculation. I see nothing but good coming from it. His responding message reply to a poster denigrating people like Pat Robertson who brought God’s will for people into the discussion 30 years ago, who was proven correct, was crude and actually quite stupid – something we don’t see from Karl a lot. He must have experienced something in his younger life to cause that outburst as he has trouble with acknowledging God’s authority over this world.
What he missed is that none of his “What ifs” matter if there is no God centered society to champion all of the good stuff that comes from stopping abortion on demand. All of those good potential results are considered good for society and are stated as such because of God’s Word. That’s the authority for doing things that way – God made the rules and how it all should go. The very definition of Good and Bad (evil) even comes from God’ s Word.
If God is left out of the reasoning and it is just all about the data for doing it, then there is no reason to even consider the What Ifs because nothing matters – being good or bad is not a relevant observation. Using data as our sole reason is like using analytics for baseball while not considering that playing within the rules and determining the final result of the game are what are most important.

Did someone finally realize that commenting on political issues could alienate a large portion of their customer base? But this is about so much more than that; this is life and death, a basic human right, and a core tenet of our founding documents. This is the one issue they should all be talking about while supporting life.
The Left has tied itself in knots with wokeness and political correctness. You can’t be a “women’s libber” and insert biological men into women’s activities. Does the “sun shield” have some type of coating, or is made of a material, that would prevent it from getting tears / holes in it? Or just failing due to number of years in service? One remembers opening an old umbrella years ago, and the shade material simply disintegrated.
I’m reasonably sure that the materials used are as resistant as could have been lifted — but it’s going to get holes from miscellaneous space junk over time. The sunshield needs four layers to work, it has five.
It has ripstop throughout in case some big tear starts to happen in one of the layers. As for slow degradation, they know the thing will get perforated by micrometeorites and the like. We have a fair amount of experience in what to expect in that regard now, and so they’ve computed how much time the shield can be out there before it gets too much like Swiss cheese to do its job. Of course there’s always the chance of an unexpected cluster of micrometeorites putting months or even years worth of hits on the thing all at once.
Or, of course ‘Oumuamua II targeting the instrument package straight on and blowing everything apart — putting 2,000 million years of expected wear on the telescope in one microsecond.
Yeah, well there’s no design that will alleviate that…so they don’t worry about it. Or if they do, they debate whether to launch any mission at all. But we’ve not lost a probe to anything like that, yet. For that matter if that sort of stuff were truly common (common enough, I mean, that we needed to worry about *big* asteroids smacking into our probes unexpected), we’d never have existed, because Earth would be getting blasted far more often than any spacecraft would be. (Once every few tens of millions of years is bad enough!)

that’s too scary. The slaughter bots are the type of thing that should never have been funded or invented but they seemed to be crowd pleasers.. It’s all shock and awe until one busts your head open.
The thing is, all the pieces are around, working at about 75% of what they’d need to for that video to happen. There are probably secret labs out there where they’ve got them 90%+ operational.
It’s never too early to start thinking about OPSEC.
When thinking about OPSEC, you don’t need to become a spymaster. You need to get some simple concepts and beat them like they owe you money.
The first is that a picture isn’t just a picture. There’s a whole bunch of info attached to it. If you send this picture to your mom and she posts it into her facebook group, there are a whole bunch of people who can see the attached info — which may include the closest cell-tower (if you took it with your phone) or GPS coordinates. If you scanned it from a physical picture you have, it may include the brand and serial number of the scanner, as well as date of scan.
Needless to say, most of the recipients of a picture don’t need to know any of this.
The second thing to realize about OPSEC is that email isn’t private. Not only are the to/from/subject/cc/bcc open (and necessarily so if you want your email delivered), but also your contents and your attachments. Unfortunately, you have to get agreement between your senders and receivers to fix this — and most of your counterparts will think you are a nut.
For quite some time now, “public-key cryptography” has been the thing. You use your computer to generate a pair of matched keys, one private and one public, then you can distribute your public key widely (there are even websites called “keyservers” to help this).
If you encrypt something with your private key, only someone with your public key (basically anyone) can read it, and know it was from you and nobody else. If someone encrypts something with your public key, they know that only you can read it — but it could be coming from anyone.
If you have a friend who has her own keypair (and you’ve already got her public key), things ratchet up nicely. If you first encrypt your message with your private key, and then with her public key, she can know that only she can read it and it can only have come from you — she merely decrypts the message with her private key and then your public key.
An email client like Thunderbird can handle all this in the background, and just let you know that the email was sent or received securely.
It should be noted that the reason schmoogle provides free email is because they get to read all of it. If you send business plans, ideas to patent, or financial data over an unencrypted link, you are allowing schmoogle to steal your IP (whether they openly do so or not).
Encrypting with one’s own private key is often called “signing” the message; it serves the same purpose.
It’s best to have TWO pairs of keys. Use one of them to sign, put its public key out there for signature verification. The other is for receiving messages. Put its public key out there so people can send messages to you.
That way if you’re ever forced to divulge your private message key, say in a court somewhere, at least no one can then use it to sign your name to something.

LOL! The irony is that using antihistamines with it does little other than symptomatic relief, as far as treatment of the disease itself – just like we always knew for flu – but also prevents death for the tiny sliver of mortality, due to cytokine storm.
