Throughout the early 20th century, an American multinational corporation called the United Fruit Company — now known as Chiquita Brands International — controlled vast swaths of Guatemalan land and production. Aided by a corrupt autocracy, it received little pushback over decades of economic exploitation.
But in the 1940s, a democratic revolution and calls for justice threatened to undermine United Fruit’s position. So the company leveraged its powerful connections inside the White House — painting the new Guatemalan government as a dangerous Communist administration in the process…

Their mission was helped by the company’s connections. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was a former lawyer for United Fruit. His brother Allen Dulles, the director of the CIA, was formerly on United Fruit’s Board of Directors. And the company’s PR Executive, Ed Whitman, was married to President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personal secretary, Ann Whitman.
United Fruit didn’t need to push hard. Eisenhower was eager to show the world his anti-Communist credentials. Under Eisenhower’s orders, the CIA began crafting Operation PBSuccess in August 1953…
To achieve this goal, the CIA recruited a disgruntled ex-Arbenz military officer named Carlos Castillo Armas. Armas rallied anti-government sentiment and pieced together an army of a few hundred men, supplied and supported with U.S. equipment and intelligence under Operation PBSuccess.
On June 18, 1954, Armas and his men attacked with the help of logistical support from the U.S. The CIA began by launching a propaganda campaign, warning the Guatemalan public and Arbenz that a major invasion was underway, setting up a clandestine radio station that jammed Guatemalan signals and flooded the airwaves with greatly exaggerated messages.

This frequently happens with cousins. My sister, for instance, looks like my cousin (dad’s brother’s son) [I look like my mom….but also much like her brother’s daughter.]
Reflecting further, much of the confusion arises from regular family things.
My paternal grandfather went through five wives (life was tough in Western Colorado). He had two sons that were brothers, and another son who was a half-brother. One of the brothers had his nose broken in the Marines, so I never thought he looked much like my dad (the other brother). Grandpa was decrepit when I first met him (on wife #5) and didn’t seem to look much like my uncle and dad.
Nevertheless, my cousin, my sister, and my sister’s kids show marked signs of being related (and somewhat like my dad). My cousin’s wife comes from a strong bloodline and their kids’ relationship isn’t as obvious.
Similarly, my maternal grandfather’s bloodline is very strong — my grandmother’s influence is much more subtle. My grandfather, uncle, and I look very close — and my mom and uncle’s daughter look like my grandfather in drag. [True anecdote — when my father first saw me in the hospital in the presentation room through the window, he exclaimed, “my God, he looks like another goddamned Bostwick!” — except he used the actual family name instead of Bostwick.] At least I know what I’m going to look like in 20 years.

The trouble I have with the “Synagogue of Satan” reference from the Bible is twofold.
1) That was a historical title bestowed very specifically on a group of people who were persecuting the new Christian church at the time. One group was in Smyrna, the other in Philadelphia. It is very obvious that those verses are addressed to living people suffering current persecution. The verses are relevant today for instruction, but they are not literally still happening.
2) The word for “synagogue” in these verses is also translated as “group” not “church.” So there was a “group” of people pretending to be Jews to persecute the early church. It is not references the Jewish “church.”
I dislike using Bible translation as a means to label modern things, as it takes an in depth understanding of not only foreign languages, but foreign languages as they were being used/understood thousands of years ago.

The U.S. Somali refugee program did not begin with a vote, a referendum, or even a dedicated bill in Congress. Most Americans have no idea how it actually started.
Here’s the real story:
Under the Refugee Act of 1980 (passed by Congress and signed by Jimmy Carter), the president alone gets to decide every year how many refugees America takes and from which countries. No new law required, no public vote, no ballot measure.
George H.W. Bush used that authority in Fiscal Years 1992 and 1993 to open a small Priority-2 category for Somalis “of special humanitarian concern.” The first arrivals (a few hundred) came in 1992–1993, right at the tail end of his presidency. Almost nobody in America noticed.
Then the numbers grew quietly under Clinton, Bush Jr., Obama, Trump (who slowed but never stopped it), and Biden:
– 1990–1994: ~4,000
– 1995–2005: ~45,000
– 2006–2016: ~70,000
– 2017–2024: another ~60,000+
Official refugee total since 1990: ≈ 180,000+
But that’s only the beginning.
Chain migration (family reunification) exploded the real number.
Once a refugee is resettled, they can petition for:
– Spouses & minor children (immediate family – no numerical limit)
– Parents (again, no numerical limit)
– Adult sons/daughters, siblings (subject to quotas but still massive over time)

One: incite discord / rebellion in the U.S. military; then, Two: when something terrible like this shooting of the National Guard members happens, bring out the crocodile tears and wave the American flag. I would like to know what his motive was. We’re all justifiably angry at the Seditious Six and Dem policies and rhetoric, but this guy seemingly acted alone. So I want to know what he would say about why he did it. Was he part of some group that was egging people on? Was he mad about immigration policies that he was in violation of? There are a lot of other possibilities too (MK, drugs, foreign agent, etc.). It’s possible that we can guess his motive, but I want to know what he would say.
