The bottom line is Free Speech. Theories and ideas you don’t agree with must be WELCOME here, and you must be part of that welcoming. But you do NOT need to be part of any agreement.

That last point is interesting. He could have been curious if there was a mistaken arrest, if he was guilty. This is a way to judge the strength of the case against him.

Well regardless of my opinion on the ethical aspects of the subject I will say that this kind of technological project is custom made for military application. If the military is involved you can also predict that the technology will also be abused for the purposes of power and wealth. DARPA and its affiliated partners are designed to keep the powerful and rich in power and rich.

I agree that technology is nothing more than a tool. There are many good “tools” that have caused great harm. That is not an indictment against the tech but merely a recognition of the beastlier aspects of human nature. I’m much more of a fan of the non-physically invasive tech on the Roswell spacecraft. They used “headbands” which were so highly effective, that they even got partial comms going with the Earth humans who showed up and tried to help the crash victims, who weren’t wearing anything.

There is an account on Twitter called “Capitol Hunters” that is roughly like “Sedition Hunters” and other “digital Antifa” types. Apparently out of fresh victims among Deplorables, this one had a long thread going after Musk, questioning his degrees and “would-be” degrees. It was very instructive in the Mamet Principle. This leftist (it’s really one person) just repeatedly chose not to see the realities of a science student’s life, in order to throw doubt on Musk’s background and integrity. Knowing the realities of the process, I could easily see what Musk had gone through, and just wanted to talk back to every tweet in the thread.
I may do a post on the topic.

Those arguments are not going to gain much sympathy from their intended audience.
Few people are provoked to embrace or defend what they don’t like, but they definitely care about protecting their own speech.
Better to recast the appeal in such a way that the intended audience fears loss for someone they do like — themselves.
A better appeal might be “Freedom of speech is intended to protect your speech from others who would try to silence you.”

Similar issue with presumption of innocence. The gov’t can wrongfully prosecute anyone, including people we do like, and the vast majority who are prosecuted are people we don’t even know.
The people we don’t like who actually ever get prosecuted for anything is vanishingly small.
A better appeal might be “The presumption of innocence is intended to protect the innocent, which may be YOU, from what would otherwise often be an impossible burden of proof.”

If the government randomly picks your name out of a phone book (or purposely targets you for criticizing them) and accuses you of a crime (e.g., murder), and the presumption is ‘guilty until proven innocent‘, then the burden of proof shifts from the State to the accused (i.e., YOU).
Unless you can prove that you did not commit the murder, unless you have a ironclad alibi, the State can lock you up and throw away the key.
The system we supposedly have now (innocent until proven guilty) is already being outrageously abused by our criminal government. Imagine how they would abuse a standard of ‘guilty until proven innocent‘.
I do find that the “this is how it matters to YOU” arguments are the most effective, for would-be DENIERS of the freedom of speech, or for those who find presumption of innocence burdensome.
Not worth the time to criticize in detail each of these propositions, but all three are incoherent, and I am definitely not a threat for not “understanding” them.
Neither free speech nor the presumption of innocence have anything to do with not liking speech or not liking a person, even in a colloquial sense.
And calling other people threats if they do not “understand” these absurdities is snide arrogance.
Reeling off catchy sounding nonsense for applause seems to be part of the craziness infecting the world.
Interestingly, I have seen just the opposite. People who can’t stand Donald Trump have condemned him for phantom crimes just because of their aversion to him — a person they don’t like. People who don’t want to hear what election challengers had to say will silence them in any way possible, including imprisoning them — for speech they don’t like. And those who do these things are a threat to the rest of us, and to our republic.
No one in his right mind disputes what you say.
The question is what is intended by free speech and the presumption of innocence.
Neither are intended to protect speech you do not like, or people you do not like. Those are implicit consequences, peripheral and collateral.
If this guy wanted to say what you imply, he should have said it.
If you do not like speech protected by free speech, you are a threat.
If you do not like the the presumption of innocence protecting a person because you do not like the person, you are a threat.
If your objection is based on the person whose right is affected, you are a moron, in addition to being a threat. Dragons are not dragonflies.
Our side is forever accepting the absurd premises of the other side.
And the breezy arrogance and condescension is a rhetorical device which has inundated (seemingly) every aspect of popular discourse.
Why not just make a logical, coherent and direct point? Isn’t that more effective than the blithe put-down, however well deserved?
Just to clarify. Our tormentors and evil oppressors have two propositions which they have spent decades to establish.
First, that free speech depends on how you regard the person.
Second, that the presumption of innocence depends on how you regard the person.
I have heard “the personal is political” all my life.
Our side has too often adopted exactly that premise.
A lawyer for our side cannot make the proper distinctions?
This is why we are losing.
We have to make the case that LEFTISTS are the ones breaking free speech and presumption of innocence.
Point of logic for all. I didn’t catch this the first time, because I was trapped in baseline “either/or” logic of the premise. I went back and thought about exactly what he says and doesn’t say.
Nothing he says denies the fact or importance that freedom of speech protects speech you like, or that it protects all speech.
Nothing he says denies the fact or importance that presumption of innocence protects people you like (or like you), or that it protects all people.
What he is saying, is that if you, or I, or (for the sake of the rest of the argument) we don’t acknowledge the generality of these protections TO speech and people we don’t like, then we are part of the mass social denial of these freedoms, which is arguably true, in that we are not actively defending the freedoms under attack due to “circumstances” of it mattering less to us personally.
It is easiest to argue self-interest for these freedoms, and I find that this is particularly effective for presumption of innocence, which is now easily demonstrable with the horrible bad prosecutions of the current Department of Injustice and Communist Imposition. If I want to convince somebody quickly of the virtues of the freedoms, I make a case personally.
But I think Frei makes an important point. If we don’t actually defend these freedoms FOR people and speech we don’t like, we’re in effect helping the freedoms to die.
Normally, we don’t have this problem. But it’s worth watching ourselves for cases where we can sell these freedoms to the other side without guilt.
When leftist speech gets trampled on unjustly, speak up, but most importantly say WHY, so that we can turn on some lightbulbs in thick skulls.
Likewise, when leftists are being railroaded unfairly, and it’s obvious, argue for the Constitution, instead of “karma”. This isn’t hard, IMO. It’s even fair to acknowledge the righteousness of the karma, but then argue against it, and WHY.

So, for those suggesting water contamination in the fuel, I got a bottle of the goo you dump in your gas tank and dumped it in last night (Saturday). Today was dry, so I went out to run the car a bit.
It went through a number of gyrations, including ones where I’d try to rev it and it would choke and die — or it would surge up to 2500 rpm and back to idle entirely by itself — or it would die if I DIDN’T rev it.
Eventually, it got all that attitude out of its system, and now it’s pretending that everything is ok.
I’m still agnostic on the “water in the fuel” thing, but it seems to have resolved as if it were the case.
Yeah, this is sure sounding like an experience I had years ago.
I had a car stalling, not starting, needing ether in the carb, etc.
I was told that my problem was from water in the gas, by somebody who had the same problem with a completely different model of car.
“You’re using cheap American gas! Their cheapest grade, too. Don’t trust it in the winter!”
I was advised to try a foreign brand – their premium, not the regular – when it was cold out.
It worked. That was only that vehicle. Years later, I’ve slipped back into cheap gas year round, with no problem. But I always remember how well that fixed the problem.
You may need to use premium BP or Shell in the winter.
This is a 1994 automobile that I have owned since new and has been kept at my address for decades, and this is the first time this has happened.
This is the sort of stuff that’s in my gas in 2022. I wonder what’s in my ground beef?

That would certainly be convenient for an administration bent on ridding the world of internal combustion engines (except their own, of course).
Ethanol absorbs water from the air, even when it’s a small part of fuel.

Excellent work – thank you! This is massive, IMO. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance, with significant turnover in the body, as it is created and destroyed. Old folks can add it as a supplement, and it is very effective in helping joints, where it is normally needed.

😀 I have been doing that since I was a toddler escaping the house at sunrise and heading for the ‘hills’ Once I was an adult I bought a horse and went trail riding after work. On weekends it was overnight hiking or caving trips. (Much of caving consists of ‘ridge walking’ to find new caves.)
The apartments I slept in were never home, the stable and trails was where I spent my off hours.
Nice to know I was doing my immune system lots of good as well as my mental health.

I used to have over 100 plants in a one room apartment in Boston. It was like a jungle.
Now all I have is one lonely Aloe. I just do not have the time for indoor plants.

Check and see if your town has town forests. They are often nice and quiet and very lightly used. I used them for trail riding in MA all the time.
That’s a good idea. I’m in farming country but there’s one county park of old growth forest not too far from here. The snow is gone so the trails would be open.

I am not sure. We moved south over 25 years ago.
However I had knee problems since High School thanks to weak ankles (and a horse rolling on my knee). Ski boots helped with the ankles.
If you walk for exercise, I would think Xcountry on the flat or gentle slopes would be easier on you since there is very very little concussion. That is why my back was so happy.
Remember, you are not doing the turns you do in down hill and you are gliding, not picking up your feet. Also you have poles to help.
If your path is a gentle circle, I would think it would not bother your knees any more than walking would,
If you have skied before it is worth trying it again.

I always wear a hat and we do a ‘tick check. 7% iodine on a fresh tick bite kills any nasties the ticks might leave behind. Works well on fire ant bites too. Baking soda the first day & 7% the second if the bite festers.
