Wolbachia

proper noun (how to pronounce)

Wolbachia is a genus of intracellular bacteria that infects mainly arthropod species, including a high proportion of insects, and also some nematodes. It is one of the most common parasitic microbes, and is possibly the most common reproductive parasite in the biosphere. Its interactions with its hosts are often complex, and in some cases have evolved to be mutualistic rather than parasitic. Some host species cannot reproduce, or even survive, without Wolbachia colonization. One study concluded that more than 16% of neotropical insect species carry bacteria of this genus, and as many as 25 to 70% of all insect species are estimated to be potential hosts.

History of Wolbachia:

The genus was first identified in 1924 by Marshall Hertig and Simeon Burt Wolbach in the common house mosquito. They described it as “a somewhat pleomorphic, rodlike, Gram-negative, intracellular organism [that] apparently infects only the ovaries and testes“. Hertig formally described the species in 1936, and proposed both the generic and specific names: Wolbachia pipientis. Research on Wolbachia intensified after 1971, when Janice Yen and A. Ralph Barr of UCLA discovered that Culex mosquito eggs were killed by a cytoplasmic incompatibility when the sperm of Wolbachia-infected males fertilized infection-free eggs. The genus Wolbachia is of considerable interest today due to its ubiquitous distribution, its many different evolutionary interactions, and its potential use as a biocontrol agent.

These bacteria can infect many different types of organs, but are most notable for the infections of the testes and ovaries of their hosts. Wolbachia species are ubiquitous in mature eggs, but not mature sperm. Only infected females, therefore, pass the infection on to their offspring. Wolbachia bacteria maximize their spread by significantly altering the reproductive capabilities of their hosts, with four different phenotypes:

  • Male killing occurs when infected males die during larval development, which increases the rate of born, infected females.
  • Feminization results in infected males that develop as females or infertile pseudofemales. This is especially prevalent in Lepidoptera species such as the adzuki bean borer (Ostrinia scapulalis).
  • Parthenogenesis is reproduction of infected females without males. Some scientists have suggested that parthenogenesis may always be attributable to the effects of Wolbachia. Though this is not the case for the marbled crayfish. An example of parthenogenesis induced by presence of Wolbachia are some species within the Trichogramma parasitoid wasp genus, which have evolved to procreate without males due to the presence of Wolbachia. Males are rare in this genus of wasp, possibly because many have been killed by that same strain of Wolbachia.
  • Cytoplasmic incompatibility is the inability of Wolbachia-infected males to successfully reproduce with uninfected females or females infected with another Wolbachia strain. This reduces the reproductive success of those uninfected females and therefore promotes the infecting strain. In the cytoplasmic incompatibility mechanism, Wolbachia interferes with the parental chromosomes during the first mitotic divisions to the extent that they can no longer divide in synchrony.

Several host species, such as those within the genus Trichogramma, are so dependent on sexual differentiation of Wolbachia that they are unable to reproduce effectively without the bacteria in their bodies, and some might even be unable to survive uninfected.

One study on infected woodlice showed the broods of infected organisms had a higher proportion of females than their uninfected counterparts.

Wolbachia, especially Wolbachia-caused cytoplasmic incompatibility, may be important in promoting speciation. Wolbachia strains that distort the sex ratio may alter their host’s pattern of sexual selection in nature, and also engender strong selection to prevent their action, leading to some of the fastest examples of natural selection in natural populations.

The male killing and feminization effects of Wolbachia infections can also lead to speciation in their hosts. For example, populations of the pill woodlouse, Armadillidium vulgare which are exposed to the feminizing effects of Wolbachia, have been known to lose their female-determining chromosome. In these cases, only the presence of Wolbachia can cause an individual to develop into a female. Cryptic species of ground wētā (Hemiandrus maculifrons complex) are host to different lineages of Wolbachia which might explain their speciation without ecological or geographical separation.

Wolbachia infection has been linked to viral resistance in Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans, and mosquito species. Flies, including mosquitoes, infected with the bacteria are more resistant to RNA viruses such as Drosophila C virus, norovirus, flock house virus, cricket paralysis virus, chikungunya virus, and West Nile virus.

In the common house mosquito, higher levels of Wolbachia were correlated with more insecticide resistance.

In leafminers of the species Phyllonorycter blancardella, Wolbachia bacteria help their hosts produce green islands on yellowing tree leaves, that is, small areas of leaf remaining fresh, allowing the hosts to continue feeding while growing to their adult forms. Larvae treated with tetracycline, which kills Wolbachia, lose this ability and subsequently only 13% emerge successfully as adult moths.

Muscidifurax uniraptor, a parasitoid wasp, also benefits from hosting Wolbachia bacteria.

In the parasitic filarial nematode species responsible for elephantiasis, such as Brugia malayi and Wuchereria bancrofti, Wolbachia has become an obligate endosymbiont and provides the host with chemicals necessary for its reproduction and survival. Elimination of the Wolbachia symbionts through antibiotic treatment therefore prevents reproduction of the nematode, and eventually results in its premature death.

Some Wolbachia species that infect arthropods also provide some metabolic provisioning to their hosts. In Drosophila melanogaster, Wolbachia is found to mediate iron metabolism under nutritional stress and in Cimex lectularius, the Wolbachia strain cCle helps the host to synthesize B vitamins.

Some Wolbachia strains have increased their prevalence by increasing their hosts’ fecundity. Wolbachia strains captured from 1988 in southern California still induce a fecundity deficit, but nowadays the fecundity deficit is replaced with a fecundity advantage such that infected Drosophila simulans produces more offspring than the uninfected ones.

Wolbachia often manipulates host reproduction and life-history in a way that favours its own propagation. In the Pharaoh ant, Wolbachia infection correlates with increased colony-level production of reproductives (i.e., greater reproductive investment), and earlier onset of reproductive production (i.e., shorter life-cycle). Infected colonies also seem to grow more rapidly. There is substantial evidence that the presence of Wolbachia that induce parthenogenesis have put pressure on species to reproduce primarily or entirely this way.

Additionally, Wolbachia has been seen to decrease the lifespan of Aedes aegypti, carriers of mosquito-borne diseases, and it decreases their efficacy of pathogen transmission because older mosquitoes are more likely to have become carriers of one of those diseases. This has been exploited as a method for pest control.

The first Wolbachia genome to be determined was that of one that infects D. melanogaster fruit flies. This genome was sequenced at The Institute for Genomic Research in a collaboration between Jonathan Eisen and Scott O’Neill. The second Wolbachia genome to be determined was one that infects Brugia malayi nematodes. Genome sequencing projects for several other Wolbachia strains are in progress. A nearly complete copy of the Wolbachia genome sequence was found within the genome sequence of the fruit fly Drosophila ananassae and large segments were found in seven other Drosophila species.

In an application of DNA barcoding to the identification of species of Protocalliphora flies, several distinct morphospecies had identical cytochrome c oxidase I gene sequences, most likely through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) by Wolbachia species as they jump across host species. As a result, Wolbachia can cause misleading results in molecular cladistical analyses. It is estimated that between 20 and 50 percent of insect species have evidence of HGT from Wolbachia—passing from microbes to animal (i.e. insects).

Wolbachia species also harbor a bacteriophage called bacteriophage WO or phage WO. Comparative sequence analyses of bacteriophage WO offer some of the most compelling examples of large-scale horizontal gene transfer between Wolbachia coinfections in the same host. It is the first bacteriophage implicated in frequent lateral transfer between the genomes of bacterial endosymbionts. Gene transfer by bacteriophages could drive significant evolutionary change in the genomes of intracellular bacteria that were previously considered highly stable or prone to loss of genes over time.

The small non-coding RNAs WsnRNA-46 and WsnRNA-59 in Wolbachia were detected in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and Drosophila melanogaster. The small RNAs (sRNAs) may regulate bacterial and host genes. Highly conserved intragenic region sRNA called ncrwmel02 was also identified in Wolbachia pipientis. It is expressed in four different strains in a regulated pattern that differs according to the sex of the host and the tissue localisation. This suggested that the sRNA may play important roles in the biology of Wolbachia.

Outside of insects, Wolbachia infects a variety of isopod species, spiders, mites, and many species of filarial nematodes (a type of parasitic worm), including those causing onchocerciasis (river blindness) and elephantiasis in humans, as well as heartworms in dogs. Not only are these disease-causing filarial worms infected with Wolbachia, but Wolbachia also seems to play an inordinate role in these diseases.

A large part of the pathogenicity of filarial nematodes is due to host immune response toward their Wolbachia. Elimination of Wolbachia from filarial nematodes generally results in either death or sterility of the nematode. Consequently, current strategies for control of filarial nematode diseases include elimination of their symbiotic Wolbachia via the simple doxycycline antibiotic, rather than directly killing the nematode with often more toxic antinematode medications.

Our Comforter

God is the God of all comfort: Paul considers the Father a comforter, a Paraclete (paraklesis) (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). We also know that the Holy Spirit is our Paraclete (John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7) and that God the Son is our Paraclete (1 John 2:1, Hebrews 2:18, Luke 2:25). God, in every aspect of His being, is full of comfort, strength, and help for us.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (paraklēseōs), who comforts (parakalōn) us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort (parakalein) those who are in any affliction, with the comfort (paraklēseōs) with which we ourselves are comforted (parakaloumetha) by God.

Life is fraught with many difficulties. Sometimes they are sudden; sometimes they are gradual. Maybe we have suffered the death of a loved one. Maybe our health is poor or our finances are uncertain. Whatever the difficulties, they affect all of us at some point in our lives, and the Bible states that this is inevitable (Job 5:7; Genesis 3:17; Proverbs 22:8).

Perhaps the most important aspect of God’s Word is the promises that are contained within, promises that the Lord makes to those who are prepared to trust Him. It is these promises that bring comfort, promises that feed off the weakest spark of saving faith to provide the reward of comfort, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. There are many promises in the Bible that have to be combined with faith to be realized, for without faith it is impossible to please God, the provider of comfort in times of trouble (Hebrews 11:6; 2 Corinthians 1:5; Psalm 46:1).

It’s because of God’s grace, that these promises are realized and become the very fuel that builds up His people. We trust God’s promises, and He has promised to reward us accordingly with joy, peace, and comfort . . . intangible things that the world can never supply. One of the greatest ways the Bible comforts is Isaiah 26:3 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

God delights in comforting the afflicted and healing the heartbroken (Jeremiah 17:14; 2 Corinthians 1:3–4; 7:6). When we are grieved by the loss of our loved ones, God is quick to offer us His peace. In the midst of our mourning, we can know the presence of God with us; even in our sorrow, we can draw near to Him in prayer and worship. As believers, we also do not have to grieve alone. We have others in the Body of Christ who will help bear the burden, share the pain, and “mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).

The loss of family members or close friends can be deeply painful, particularly since they play such a key role in shaping our lives. Indeed, those are often the ones who comfort us when we are hurting, and to lose them can feel like we are losing our emotional support. But Christians can take heart in that we find comfort in more than our families and friends; the very God of Creation, who knows us better than we know ourselves, understands our pain and is eager to grow us and heal us and give us His peace.

Embrace God in faith, asking for His help, and there will be no disappointment.

Joining The Herd Of Lemmings

I’ve had cause to consider a few things. Maybe we’re going about it the wrong way, and we need to ditch Trump

Trump all the way! Why? Because being hated by the people who hate him is a sign of impeccable character, that’s why.

The haters can go fuck themselves with rusty twelve gauge bore brushes. I’d prefer ten gauge but that’s kind of scarce, so…I’m willing to compromise.

The RINO’s Dilemma

The RINOs who who have burrowed in and taken over most GOP organizations, from the state down to local organizations, have quite a dilemma on their hands, and most of them have their heads too far up their asses to realize it.

OK, I’m not talking about the liberal in a Republican area, who knows they’re in the wrong party, but is there because it’s the only game in their town; they hope to capture a nomination someday, at which point they’re guaranteed to be elected…otherwise, they never will be. These people are a hazard in any heavily conservative area.

No, I’m talking about the guys who are a little bit conservative and want to do some good by going into politics, and they’re in a closely matched area, closely enough that they can join the party they are most aligned with and still have a chance. They think the Democrats…particularly the ones who end up running for office…are nuts.

They don’t think much better of the Deplorable types, either. A bunch of bumpkins whose hearts are in the right place, mostly…OK a bit extreme. But they think Deplorables can’t understand that first you have to get elected, then work within the system to change things…a slow process. They genuinely want many of the things Deplorables want…just not as much. The government is spending too much. Or they need to spend money on highways instead of welfare for illegal immigrants. But they want to work within the system to get these things done.

Or maybe they think things are pretty close to ideal right now, and they want to nail it in place.

The problem is, that means they don’t stand for anything in particular. And it shows. They’re about as unappetizing to the electorate as a puddle of dog vomit. The folks in the middle, who they think they are appealing to because they themselves are not extreme, would honestly prefer a clear-spoken radical to someone who qualifies everything they say to the point where they sound like they don’t believe anything at all.

The problem these “Mild RINOs” have, is they just can’t see that. And the reason they just can’t see that, is their entire sense of self-worth is tied up in not seeing that. In their minds, they’ve worked tirelessly for their party, to keep those crazy Democrats out…only to have to constantly fight with a small number of crazy Republicans–who are only liabilities if they end up as candidates. They’ve fought the good fight, and if they can just find the right candidate, someone with some charisma, they might stop the crazies…without being too beholden to the OTHER crazies. In the meantime it’s not working. What’s a responsible guy in politics to do?

They simply cannot understand that the Republicans can’t succeed as the party of nothing in particular. Not really in the past, and certainly not today when people are starting to realize that no matter what they do in the voting booth, the country is still about to fly off a precipice. If they did see it, they’d suddenly have two choices: Go away and let the GOP succeed, or stay and fight. But “go away” isn’t really an option, because what’s the point of having a party now owned by the crazies, win?

Well, they have a dilemma…and WE, therefore have a problem. And we would have that problem even IF they realized that they had a problem…that they were the problem.

No one ever thinks they are the bad guy. Even Epstein probably thought he was the good guy. Right up to the moment where he didn’t kill himself.

So if you ever wonder why these unappetizing dufuses cling on even when their fingernails are being left behind…that’s why. They don’t understand no one wants them, and can’t imagine that no one should want them. And oftentimes their greatest pride is in all the hard work they’ve done for the party. They’re not going to give that up; it’d be psychological suicide.

If you’ve worked with these people, there’s a good chance you like them and consider some of them your friends. But even if so…we’re going to have to give them a good, hard shove. Because America is more important than those milquetoasts’ egos.

Justice Must Be Done

The prior election must be acknowledged as fraudulent, and steps must be taken to prosecute the fraudsters and restore integrity to the system.

Nothing else matters at this point. Talking about trying again in 2022 or 2024 is hopeless otherwise. Which is not to say one must never talk about this, but rather that one must account for this in ones planning; if fixing the fraud is not part of the plan, you have no plan.

Palladium and rhodium continue to slide which either means, someone is finally mining the stuff and meeting the demand, or…the economy is in a world of hurt. (The problem is they tend to piggyback on platinum mining, and no one is bothering with platinum because it’s been a glut on the market for years.)

Arbitrary Powers

No, this is not political, even though our would-be overlords are exercising arbitrary powers.

The last two posts on e and π have probably bent a few minds as people read them. I talked about some pretty wacky arithmetic…and it is arithmetic. Some few people here might not know what fractional and negative powers mean, or that they can even exist, so I’m going to take a break and bring ’em up to speed. Then I’ll bring in the Taylor series.

It seems like it would be a bit tricky multiplying an irrational number by itself, or even by some other irrational number. If it’s a rational number, even a repeating decimal, you can do the multiplication with fractions (where you get an exact answer), then if necessary convert to a decimal. But when the number doesn’t end as a decimal and can’t be represented as a fraction what do you do? You can just take it out to about twice as many digits as you need, do the multiplication, then throw away the digits you don’t need….only some of them at the end were wrong anyway. But that’s not really satisfying to mathematicians (engineers settle for it, because this is the real world and computers can only go so far for rendering numbers–there is a whole branch of mathematics devoted to estimating the errors in approximations).

And especially in the post on e, I talked about raising numbers to fractional powers. OK…at first blush, that is just plain screwy. e you might have a grip on. e2…well you multiply e x e. And e15…well it’s a lot of work and even the most sadistic math teacher wouldn’t expect that done longhand, but you just multiply 1.0 times e, then repeat..a total of fifteen times. But what in the heck does it mean to raise e to the 2.4th power? e2.4 is 1.0 times e…2.4 times. But multiplication is a single operation, you can’t do 4/10ths of a multiplication. It’s either done or it’s not done. And that’s not because e is irrational and transcendental, you have the same issue with 2x.

A similar question arises when someone talks about raising a number to a negative power…what does it mean to multiply 1 by xnegative three times? That one’s a bit easier, and I’ll give you a hint up front…division is the opposite of multiplication. Read on for the answer.

Yet with all these questions about what powers other than 1, 2, 3, etc. mean, you see a nice smooth graph of ex, like this one, with values drawn in between the integer powers:

You’ll note that the line goes through x=1, x=2 and so forth as if it’s meaningful to raise e to any power…fractions, compound numbers, irrational numbers, transcendental numbers, you-name-it. How do we know that line is smooth between e1 and e2, e2 and e3, and so forth, instead of jiggling all over the place in some wacky way that only just has to cross through the integer powers?

Well, it seems fairly intuitive that e2.5, whatever the heck it means, should be somewhere between e2 and e3. And that e2.25 really ought to be somewhere between e2 and e2.5. Follow that one far enough and you have a plausible argument that whatever that line should do, it should climb the whole way between e squared and e cubed, and not jiggle around. That’s not a solid proof, but a fairly strong suggestion. And of course that still leaves the possibility of the line being straight or even convex upward between the knowable, sensible points.

But we can actually go there, in a much more rigorous way–and the graph has it right. Nice smooth curve.

Consider what it means to raise some number, like, say, two, to an integer power…like, say, ten. In other words, 210. That;s simply 2·2·2·2·2·2·2·2·2·2 = 1024 (and that’s where You-Know-Who’s fraction of Indian (feather, not dot) ancestry comes from).

What happens if you multiply 24 by 23? Let’s see…that’s 2·2·2·2 multiplied by 2·2·2…which is to say, 2·2·2·2·2·2·2 or 27. And 7 happens to be 4 + 3. That’s not a coincidence. Provided you’re working from the same base, here 2 in both cases, (rather than doing 24 times 35, where they are different) you simply add the exponents. That’s a quick shortcut in algebra, where you might have to multiply x4 by x3. You just write x7. (But if you’re faced with x4 multiplied by y3, you’re stuck with x4y3.)

You can similarly divide by subtracting exponents, because dividing is the opposite of multiplying, and subtracting is the opposite of addition. So: x4/ x3 is x4-3 = x1 = x. Or written out, x·x·x·x/x·x·x. The three xs on the bottom cancel out three xs on top leaving you with x. And if the latter number is bigger than the first number, you end up with a negative power. That means more xs on the bottom, and (if you’re dealing with x3-4, you end up with x–1 = 1/x.

So a negative power is just the reciprocal of the same positive power. Thus x-3 is 1/x3, etc.

And you now know that any number raised to the zeroth power is 1. In other words, x0 = 1, no matter what x is. Don’t believe me? Do some algebra. Divide x2 by x2 to get 1, then do the same thing by subtracting the exponents.

OK, now for the next trick. There is a number–let’s call it s, which, when you square it, gives you 2. So s2 is 2. Or, s·s = 2. Or strictly speaking, s·s = 21. But we’ve already seen that you can get a number, raised to a power, by raising that number to other powers and adding the powers. So, you could figure s is two raised to some power, and multiply them together, like this 2p·2p=21. So what is p then? What is the one number, which when added to itself equals one? That’s ½.

So we have: 2½·2½=21.

Of course, s, which is equal to 2½, is simply the square root of 2. So…raising a number to the 1/2 power gives you its square root. And raising a number to its 1/3 power is the same as taking its cube root. And so on. That means to take the nth root of a number…you can divide the exponent, whatever it is, by n. The cube root of some number, x, is symbolized by first writing x as x1, so that it has an exponent…then dividing the exponent by 3.

So do you want to know what 22.4 is? Now we can figure it out. It’s 22 x 21/5 x 21/5 because 2.4 = 2+1/5+1/5. Or you can treat it as 212/5. To compute that, multiply 1 by 2…repeating 11 times for a total of 12 multiplications. Then take the fifth root.

No, I am not suggesting you do this, but at least now you can see what a calculator might be doing behind the scenes when you enter 2, then xy, then 2.4.

How about raising the power of some number, to yet another number? Like, say, raising 2 to the third power, then raising that to the fourth power? In other words, (23)4? Well, let’s see, that would be (23)·(23)·(23)·(23) which we already know you can figure out by adding 3+3+3+3 to get 212. But it’s also multiplying 3 by 4 to get 12. So when you raise a power to another power, you multiply the two exponents. (And again the base…the number you’re raising…has to match–in this case it will match.)

I said a couple of paragraphs ago that your calculator might be raising a number to a power, then taking some root of it, to compute a fractional power. But it’s probably not. Taking some weird root of a number is hard. (It’s easier using certain tricks, but still…) There is instead something called the Taylor Series. And unfortunately, deriving it requires calculus, but it can be used for any “infinitely differentiable” (i.e., “smooth-curve”) function.

You use it to approximate the value of some function that might be otherwise very hard to compute. Just run it out as far as you like; eventually you’ll see your answer isn’t changing enough to change the last digit on the calculator’s display, and you stop. (That’s called “converging on the value.”)

Here’s the full Taylor series. Don’t worry too much about it; it’s about to get much simpler.

(For calculus geeks and the brave: A is some number you want to start from; most of the time that just gets set to zero and when you do that, it’s called the Maclaurin series. The fs with all the tick marks are derivatives of the function f. And the ! notation means to multiply a number by all the smaller numbers, so 6! is 6x5x4x3x2x1=720.)

As I said, you can use any smooth function here. And it just so happens that raising a positive number to the power x gives you a smooth function. So we can use the Taylor/Maclaurin series.

If that number you’re raising happens to be e then it gets very simple. The Taylor series for ex simplifies as follows if a=0…because the derivatives of ex are all themselves ex. So you’re taking ex of zero…over and over again. But that’s just one. And with a equals zero all of those (x-a)s become simply x. So you’re left with:

(Sorry if you don’t know calculus…you can take my word for it…or dig, somewhere. If you can’t dig, ask other people who know calculus to confirm I’m not just some guy on the internet bullshitting you…rather, I’m just some guy on the internet actually giving you the straight dope. Will miracles never cease?)

Notice One Very Cool Thing: You’re computing ex without actually using the number e. And you’re doing it without having to take some weird root of the number for a fractional case. And x can be a fraction, a compound number, the square root of 2, some negative version of any of these…you name it! It’s all multiplication, division, and addition. You just have to keep going until it converges. Which, granted, might be a long time.

Yes, it’s a lot of arithmetic…but arithmetic is what calculators do.

I just set this up in a spreadsheet. Each term is simply x/n times the previous term, then you add them all up. So if I raise e1, it converges on 2.718281828 after twelve steps (and you’re just adding 1+1+1/2+1/6+1/24+1/120…). So you can compute e this way, as far out as you like. However, if I raise e10, it takes 35 steps to converge on 22,026.46579. The farther away from zero you get, the longer it will take to converge. Your calculator would probably take some shortcuts; I could guess what they are (and bore you, if I haven’t already) and probably be wrong anyway.

OK, well that’s bloody nice, you might be saying. But what if I want to raise some other number to a fractional exponent? Like, say, ten? Surely ten is a more useful base than friggin’ e is! So….just for an example, what’s 103.7?

This series can help you do that!

There is some number, call it q, that if you raise e to that power, you get 10. In other words, eq=10. Or in yet other words, q is the natural logarithm of 10, q = ln(10). (Apparently ln was chosen as the symbol for this by the French…or some other language that would want to put “natural” after “logarithm.”)

[Logarithms deserve their own post…and they’re not going to get one, at least not in this little miniseries. Suffice it to say you can figure out what two numbers multiplied together is…by adding their logarithms. Calculators probably use them a lot, too, inside and behind the scenes.]

How does that help us? Well, your original problem, “what’s 103.7?” is equivalent to “what’s (eq)3.7? But we already know that that is the same as: eq·3.7. Remember how you multiply exponents, to take the exponent of an exponent? And we know how to raise e to any power; use the series!

You just need to know what the natural log of your desired base is. And your desired base can be anything…a fraction, an irrational number…you name it, as long as you can get there by raising e to some notional power, you can use it. You just need to know what that notional power actually is.

Well, guess what, there’s a Taylor series for that too, a series for ln(x). I’m not going to hit you with that, though, because it won’t matter down the road. Suffice it to say natural logs are readily obtainable…naturally.

OK…so where are we?

We went from wondering how the heck you can raise numbers to negative and fractional values, and wondering how to raise an irrational, even transcendental, number like e to a power…to realizing that fractional and negative powers actually do mean something, and being able to raise e to any fractional or negative value without even having to use the number e to do it, using nothing but multiplication, division and addition. Pretty slick. And going from there to being able to raise any real number to any real power.

You might not be impressed but your calculator loves it.

Back In My Day: Civilized War – Bank Autopsy

A tale as sad as any told about a bank during the economic meltdown of the Great Recession.

To sum up the lesson of this part of the BIMD story: The years of plenty followed by the years of famine. Biblical – as found in Genesis Chapter 41.

Wisdom – Git Sum

All the owners of Community South Bank (CSB) needed to do was listen and consider what was happening in front of them. They had long term relationships with national and local politicians, regulators, other bankers, business associates and so on. If they no longer wanted me to lead the division and advise them on the bank side, at least pay attention to everything and everybody else who had a pulse and a resemblance of useful knowledge.

Why trust a vagabond investment banking loan buyer/seller who would sell his soul for a buck and move on? Yes, he was very intelligent and had a strong work ethic in what he did. However, why hand total trust of the bank’s balance sheet to somebody who had not been there when the owners acquired the bank, grew it, and hired us to build the division that went from ground zero to #15 in the nation with SBA in combined program loan volume? Why trust so many other people, antiquated methods and systems that were no longer of value?

All of that and more escaped their understanding, which was odd since they were not dummies. The ownership was comprised of a well heeled General Contractor with over 30 years experience; an attorney who was also the CEO of an ESOP controlled nursing home chain; and the Chairman with over 30 years of banking experience including being the former CEO of the former shareholder’s larger bank as well as President of the state’s banking association. They all owned other businesses as well.

And yet…

Motivations Were Different

During the earlier days of our great growth, profitability, and national lobbying activities; the owners were all in. You can track the strong increase in net income beginning in our second full year of operations in 2005 via the information in the link. Over time greed and pride began to dominate their hearts and decisions. Their expectations were not rooted in reality despite our transparency of explaining the nature and cycles of our business prior to and during employment. Of the three, only the Chairman had a soft heart for the Lord as well as a decent understanding of commercial banking. However, he was a minority shareholder who would not buck the others and acted unsure of himself at times. The three owners had been lifelong friends going back decades. There was no way for me to isolate and address the issue as their hired gun. In addition, the bank’s President was also a young, local guy in the pocket of the Contractor who stayed at odds with the Chairman and openly lobbied for his job. This had become very detrimental to the morale of the bank’s employees in their headquarters.

None of that insider ownership information was known to our group prior to joining forces. It usually takes time and working closely with people to get the lay of the land in business. We wanted the opportunity to prove we could get it done and they were the only option we felt we had considering the situation with our former employer that would have led to the total disruption of what we had built. In the eastern U. S. there were no other banks we were aware of who had previously or would consider going national with small business lending as we could do it. All we asked for was reasonable expectations and flexibility to ebb and flow with the economic cycles. They acknowledged it when we first began, however, they reneged over time. It was not to be, again. This group of owners never believed in or accepted our vision, but never told us that until several years had passed. They just wanted more money.

In the final analysis their lack of understanding did not stop them from eventually exerting their ownership authority to force it to happen. In their attempt minus me, Judas was given authority over some key areas of the division while credit administration was handled by the SCO and sales by the NSM temporarily. All reported directly to the Chairman, at least in the first couple of years. The same Chairman who had exhibited the deer in the headlights look about what we did most of the time I was employed there.

Bank Financial Downturn

As shown in the financial information provided in the link their downturn began in 2008 not long after I was gone, although they remained in denial for a couple of years. The owners would call occasionally to chat and get my opinions, of which they ignored until it was too late. I wanted them to succeed for the division employees had trusted us with their careers and income as well as to receive the compensation from the parachute, so I would always take the calls and offer advice when asked. Their pride would never allow them to publicly admit it, however, it was obvious during the calls after a couple of years that they realized they stepped in it. I will refrain from posting an image of what they stepped in; you the reader already know.

Several key division staff contacted me to discuss their issues. Sometimes it would be as they were in the process of exiting to better opportunities. The SCO would try to spin how they were doing in his calls. Which was silly given that their quarterly call (financial) report was published and I saw it every quarter. At one point a few years in he finally realized he had been a major contributor to their downfall by continuing to approve requests that added to the backlog of loans that had become nearly impossible to sell despite the claims of Judas. I repeatedly told him and the owners to move the loans as soon as possible both during and post employment even if it was just for a small fee or at breakeven; to sell everything not bolted down on the ship. I knew there were still buyers available who would pay reduced fees. Yet, they refused to sell.

I asked the SCO if he remembered when and why I urged him to tighten the reins on credit approvals in the second half of 2007. He said he remembered, but the owners would not let him; they wanted more loan volume. I asked him how that worked out for everybody. He had no response. Without being contracted, he chose to be yoked and contribute in a major way to the eventual demise of the bank. He knew better, could have resisted, left his job if necessary; yet, he did what they wanted anyway. More on him later.

The NSM would tell it like it was. He let me know he would be leaving to take over as the small business finance unit’s eastern region manager for a top ten national bank later in 2008. He had driven sales from zero at start-up to over $400 M annually in credit worthy loan volume in less than five years at that small community bank. He deserved the opportunity and is still a force in the industry today. More on him later as well.

At the time of my termination the bank had around $550 M in assets with a capital ratio in excess of 8% that passed regulatory requirements as well capitalized. This was a manageable size that could be sustained based on existing capital and liquidity. The key issue for the bank’s viability was to routinely sell the pooled loans held for resale. During my leadership period we managed the balance sheet with pooled loans for resale at less than 25% of total assets at all times as disclosed in the financial data provided in the link. The high point at FYE 2007 was just below $120 M. One year later after I was gone they had increased it to $282.5 M on $715 M in assets, which was nearly 40%, during the worst period in the debt market collapse. In other words, they did the exact opposite of what they should have done in those market conditions, even beginning the process of increasing pooled loans secretly in the fourth quarter of 2007 while I was still there. Judas slowed loan sales with ownership approval under the guise of completing sales in the first half of 2008 to get off to a good start (for himself).

After the previously committed loan pool sales closed in early 2008, instead of selling the future pooled loans for lesser returns to the buyers who remained, Judas and the owners chose to hold them to sell at a later date when conditions and returns improved. Ordinarily that does not have to be a bad thing since the bank would receive increased interest income during the period instead of receiving premium (fee) income as well as servicing income earned from loan sales. However, the economic collapse occurring nationwide was increasing delinquencies and loan defaults at a rapidly increasing rate with all businesses and consumers. This would lead to a big liquidity and capital crunch as the buyers of pools exited the market no matter the debt instruments involved.

Which leads to the Biblical story referenced at the beginning of this part found in Genesis Chapter 41. Since the owners had been personally taking everything they could out of the bank’s income in the form of compensation and dividends during the years of plenty, there was no reserve of capital and liquidity to cover for the expected increasing loan defaults and lesser profit margins during the years of famine. Pharaoh was willing to listen and adapt to the strategy of Joseph. He was willing to accept that there are good times and bad times, so prepare in advance. As a result, not only did Egypt survive, they thrived and became even wealthier.

Counting the excessive executive overhead charge annually, our division had delivered approximately $25 M of income in 4.5 years from startup to a community bank operation that contributed less than $10 M in the same period. Before my termination the bank reported $10.1 M net income for FYE 2007. The division provided in excess of $7.5 M of that after paying the large executive overhead charge to the bank; $8.9 M excluding it. We had pushed the Return on Assets (ROA) to around 2% consistently while the traditional banking operation was going the opposite direction due to their branch expansion. For the less financial types reading this – 1% ROA was a traditionally acceptable return for banks during that period.

A cash dividend of $3.5 M was paid. Combined bank and division net charge-offs for the year were only $1.1 M, which had already been adequately reserved in previous years. Only $500 K of that paltry total was attributed to our division, which at that point had closed approximately $1.1 B in small business loans in 4.5 years. The rest of the bank only provided about $1.2 M of the total 2007 net income. That low number, half what it had been when we started there, should have been a clue that they were overextending the expansion of branches.

For 2008 and after my termination the overall bank managed a positive net income of $4.6 M, of which the division provided $3.3 M according to the NSM excluding the executive overhead charge. So basically, the traditional community bank side provided no net income and was beginning to have excessive commercial real estate based loan defaults in its expanded branch locations. The income was less than half the previous year. Instead of gaining even more income with my termination that the owners believed they could do, the opposite happened as they went on their merry way. Yet, they still took a cash dividend of $2.7 M. Please note that regulators must approve the payout of dividends. So they obviously believed whatever story the owners were telling them. During the years following 2008 the bank lost money, a lot of money. Despite that, regulators allowed a $787 K cash dividend to be paid for FYE 2009, ostensibly paid to the Chairman who bailed out of the organization per the SCOs comments.

Throughout 2008 and 2009 they continued to approve SBA 504 loans that they could not sell immediately. The use of the program had been the “opportunity” CSB needed previously, but should have been discontinued at the beginning of 2008 since it involved the acquisition and construction of commercial real estate for business purposes. The economy was clearly tanking. The $150 M of loan commitments for construction loans were in various stages of completion during the collapse. Some borrowers were already in deep trouble due to the economy. Over $60 M of the total was to be partially taken out by the funding of SBA’s guaranteed debentures. The SBA began waffling on their commitments because they could not sell the debentures. They delayed settlements due to a lack of federal funding and access to institutional buyers to purchase the debentures.

The division staffing remained high in 2008 for the volume of business as they did not implement the division’s expense reduction plan until well into 2009. They also never implemented a bank-wide expense reduction plan at all. They simply never believed the downturn would last long, much less become The Great Recession. Judas had them fully convinced all would be well, until it wasn’t.

Fortunately, my compensation continued to be paid even if it was slow in receipt at times. Over the years that ensued their difficulties became worse and they were forced to make drastic cuts in division staffing of those who remained. Many good people had left voluntarily as opportunities presented themselves. Three years into the parachute and non-compete agreement, the division’s senior attorney contacted me to partner with her and a group of Nashville investors to develop a lending unit. In addition a couple of other local banks wanted to do one as well. I passed on all of the opportunities to live within the spirit of the agreement, which would have needed the bank’s release to change. My freedom had become much more important than career aspirations.

During 2011 the SCO called to say that he had finally talked the owners into selling what was left of the division for $1 M to an expanding regional bank who wanted the unit for their branch system to refer customers. The benefit to CSB would be the cash and reduced expenses from staff leaving. It was actually amusing to hear in light of the $21 M Bear Stearns offer they previously rejected. They turned over all of the CDO servicing rights to the master servicer. The SCO had the opportunity to lead his own small unit for the purchasing bank – a big fish in a very small pond with no outside sales force. It was at this point that he told me that Judas had gone through some personal changes of heart, that he had returned to his former employer in Memphis. All of the bank and economic challenges had humbled him and he had accepted Jesus; that I should reach out to him.

Maybe I should have. Or maybe the SCO was trying to make himself feel better about his own choices. Maybe the change of heart was real and I sincerely hoped it was. However, Judas needed to be the one to reach out to make amends. Reconciliation would have been possible as I had already forgiven him and moved on. I had not harmed him in any way during our times working together or afterwards. I had offered him a career lifeline with a good compensation plan. It was a role that he had abused along with the bank itself. The ball was in his court to make the first move if he was sincere; a simple phone call he never made.

Winding It Down

I could belabor the points and details, but it is time to move on. The bank failed in mid-2013. My last check from the agreement was received in August for what was due in April. They made it the five years I hoped they would achieve. I was thankful they honored the agreement to the best of their abilities during difficult times as I honored mine. Another larger, regional bank purchased the facilities and took over the deposit accounts. The FDIC took over the loan accounts. The recognition of the losses incurred from the defaulted loans and CDO tranches had already occurred a few years before. The loan recovery process had also begun, which would have improved CSB’s balance sheet as foreclosed properties (REO) were sold in better market conditions. The SBA had begun working through their backlog of funding guaranteed loans and debentures with appropriations from each federal budget CR approval as quantitative easing was kicking in.

Had they listened, all would have been well in about four-five years if they had injected the trust preferred funding into bank operations instead of buying out the former shareholder and/or sold the division to Bear. It would have helped to not take the large cash dividends. If the division remained, there would have been an increased emphasis on making SBA 7(a) program guaranteed loans that remained financially attractive throughout the downturn with a division staff trimmed to match the needs of the program per the plan I provided them in January 2008. All of the servicing portfolio would have remained with the income it provided to cover all division staffing expenses. The new operations and servicing platform would have been finished and implemented by early 2009.

All of it would have been dependent on leaving greed and the thirst for control out of the equation.

They did none of it.

Be Holy For I Am Holy

Perhaps better than any other chapter in the Bible, Leviticus 19 explains what it meant for Israel to live as a holy nation. Through Moses, God spoke to the people, saying, “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). Both the Old and the New Testament stress the importance of developing personal holiness in our lives as believers: “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15–16).

In Hebrew, the words translated “holy” and “holiness” have to do with being “set apart,” “separate,” “different,” or “dedicated.” The absolute moral purity of God’s character sets Him apart, making Him different from every other living creature. Yet He calls His people to be holy as He is holy. Humans generally think of holiness as obeying God’s law. But, for God, holiness is not a mere action or a set of behaviors. Holiness is His essence. God is morally and ethically perfect by nature. So how can we set ourselves apart to reflect God’s holiness in the way we live?

The Bible reveals that God’s holiness of character is a model for believers’ lives and our shared communion with others. Both passages (Leviticus 19:2 and 1 Peter 1:16) and their surrounding verses stress that we who wish to replicate God’s holiness must reflect His holy nature in our relationships with other people and our sincere love for fellow believers.

In Leviticus 19:1–37, God applies the Ten Commandments to various areas of life, spelling out in great detail for the Israelites how to be holy as He is holy. They were to honor their parents, keep the Sabbath, not practice idolatry, worship and offer sacrifices properly according to God’s instructions, provide for the poor, not steal, cheat, seek revenge, and not follow pagan customs and rituals. The commands continue, covering every aspect of spiritual, moral, family, work, and community life. Included is the charge to “love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:18).

Peter also lays out how we can live in the light of God’s command to be holy as He is holy. First, he says to discipline our minds: “So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world” (1 Peter 1:13, NLT). We are to exercise self-control and stay alert both mentally and spiritually. This mental discipline requires a concentrated focus on trusting in the Lord to get us to our final destination, where we will experience the fullness of God’s grace in Jesus Christ.

Paul expresses it like this: “Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12–14, CSB). If we focus only on the short-term—our current situation—we run the risk of straying off course. But if we live with total trust that Jesus Christ will return to accomplish all that He started in us (Philippians 1:6), it will make a significant difference in how we live.

“You must live as God’s obedient children,” says Peter, “Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires” (1 Peter 1:14. When we “do not conform to the evil desires” we had before we came to know Christ, we live in response to God’s holiness, adopting His behavior as our pattern.

This change of behavior begins on the inside with our attitude and mind-set. When our inner thought life, our purpose, and our character are changed into the image of Christ, our outward selves and outworking behavior will alter naturally. This process is the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification: “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

As part of his teaching on cultivating holiness, Peter instructs believers to “live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear” (1 Peter 1:17). Living as strangers here on earth hammers home the idea that our earthly lives with all their challenges and struggles are only temporary. Even in our pain, we can live with hope as citizens of a future heavenly reality. Reverent fear refers to humble, respectful awe of God, which motivates us to live obedient, holy lives.

Finally, Peter makes the point that living in the light of God’s holiness means demonstrating “sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart” (1 Peter 1:22, NLT).

Believers ought to be notably different from non-believers and their old selves because of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. His holy presence in our lives produces in us a loving obedience to God’s Word, which ultimately forms God’s character in us. If we are set apart for God’s use, separated from our old, common way of living, we are following God’s command to “be holy for I am holy.”

Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
