We have a seven year old entrepreneur in our neighborhood. He put out flyers and everything. He rolls your garbage can to the curb the night before trash pick up & rolls it back to your garage once it’s picked up. We of course signed up for this service & we pay him $5 a week. When we signed up he came to our house with his parents to introduce himself. We congratulated him on his new business! He told us he was saving money for a car. The GM called us within six minutes. He said we’re not brining one car, we are bring many. The Appellate Division, First Department, overturned the whopping fine in the case in which Trump, 79, was found to have fraudulently inflated his net worth by billions of dollars over a decade to get better loan and insurance terms.
Trump would have had to pay a total of more than $500 million, including more than $100 million in interest, had the February 2024 ruling from Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron been upheld.

There’s no guilty in a civil case. The word is liable.
I have yet to read the 323 pages but generally, the plaintiff [NY state] is at least stuck with a retrial on the issue of damages. With the rather huge number of pages, I speculate that they tossed the liability also. This means at least a new trial.
If they want to kill the case once and for all, the appeals court would have to determine that there was a jurisdictional bar to the suit. There might be other methods but I’d have to read the opinion to see.

Two judges wrote that they felt New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit against Trump and his companies was justifiable and that she had proven her case but the penalty was too severe.
One wrote that James exceeded her legal authority in bringing the suit, saying that if any of Trump’s lenders felt cheated, they could have sued him themselves, and none did.
One judge wrote that Engoron erred by ruling before the trial began that the attorney general had proved Trump engaged in fraud.
Since the judges could not agree on the legal rationale for overturning the lower court ruling on the fraud, it stands. It is what is called a plurality decision. There is no majority opinion on the issue of fraud, just the penalty.
I expect Trump will appeal the fraud issue to the Court of Appeals. The penalty is out, but the business restrictions are still in place.
Correct. As far as the next step, this case is now officially a tar baby. Anybody who touches it to try to ‘get Trump’ again is advised to refuse.

In the charming little town of Willowby, where picket fences gleamed whiter than a politician’s smile and every lawn was mowed to manicured perfection, people had a peculiar habit of dropping dead. Not in a dramatic, blood-splattered way, mind you – just quietly, mysteriously, often with a teacup in hand or a half-eaten scone on their plate. The townsfolk, ever polite, chalked it up to “the way of things,” as one does in charming little towns everywhere. After all, Willowby was the sort of place where bad things only happened to people who probably deserved it, or so they whispered over chamomile tea at the weekly book club.
The first to go was Mr. Clarence Tuttle, the bank manager who’d foreclosed on half the town’s cottages during the Great Recession, chuckling as he signed the papers. He was found slumped in his leather armchair, a jar of honey – charmingly labeled with a hand-drawn bee and a looping “From Mabel’s Garden” script – sitting open on his desk. The coroner, a nervous man named Dr. Peebles, muttered something about heart failure and scurried off. Nobody thought much of it. Clarence was a miserable old git, and heart failure sounded about right for a man whose heart was mostly made of compound interest.
Then came Mrs. Agatha Pimm, the gossip who’d once spread a rumor that the vicar was secretly a nudist. She keeled over mid-sentence at the garden fete, her teacup spilling Earl Grey onto her prized petunias. Beside her, another jar of Mabel’s honey, tied with a pink ribbon, glinted in the sun. “Natural causes,” Dr. Peebles stammered, avoiding eye contact. The townsfolk nodded sagely. Agatha’s tongue had been sharper than a hedge trimmer; maybe the universe had finally snipped it.
By the time the third victim – Councilman Reginald Snoot, who’d tried to bulldoze the town park for a strip mall – expired with a spoonful of honey halfway to his mouth, people started to talk. Not loudly, mind you – Willowby wasn’t that kind of town. But whispers fluttered like moths around the teashop, where the air smelled of lavender and suspicion.
The common thread, it seemed, was Mabel Pritchard, the town’s sweetest octogenarian. Mabel lived in a cottage so charming it could’ve starred in a postcard, with roses climbing the walls, lavender swaying in the breeze, and a garden buzzing with bees. Her honey was legendary, gifted in little jars adorned with ribbons and her spidery handwriting. Everyone loved Mabel. She’d bake scones for the church bazaar, knit scarves for the orphans, and smile so warmly you’d swear she was your own granny. But lately, folk noticed, her honey only went to certain people. The ones who’d crossed her, back in the day.
Take Clarence Tuttle. Decades ago, he’d swindled Mabel’s father out of his farm, leaving the family penniless. Agatha Pimm? She’d spread lies about Mabel’s late husband, claiming he’d run off with a barmaid when he’d actually died in a tragic tractor accident. And Reginald Snoot? He’d once fined Mabel’s mother for growing “unsightly” wildflowers, then laughed when she cried at the council meeting. Mabel never forgot. Mabel never forgave.
The townsfolk, bless their nosy hearts, began piecing it together at the teashop one rainy afternoon. “It’s the honey,” whispered Betty Crump, the librarian, clutching her teacup like a lifeline. “Mabel’s bees feed on that oleander in her garden. Poisonous, it is. I read it in a book.”
“Nonsense,” scoffed Tom the butcher, who’d never crossed Mabel and thus never received her honey. “She’s a sweet old dear. Wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
“Flies, maybe not,” Betty muttered. “But what about that time she told me, ‘Betty, dear, some folks reap what they sow, and I just help the harvest along’? I thought she was talking about carrots!”
The teashop buzzed with theories, but nobody dared confront Mabel. She was too beloved, too frail-looking, with her lace shawls and twinkling eyes. Besides, the victims weren’t exactly mourned. “Good riddance,” muttered the postman, who’d lost his house to Tuttle’s foreclosures. “Serves ’em right,” agreed the florist, who’d endured Agatha’s gossip for years. Mabel, it seemed, was settling scores nobody else had the guts to touch.
One evening, as the sun dipped low and painted Willowby in shades of peach and gold, young Jenny Harper, the baker’s daughter, crept to Mabel’s cottage. She’d always liked Mabel, who’d taught her to braid daisies into crowns, but curiosity – and a touch of teenage bravado – drove her to snoop. Peering through the window, Jenny saw Mabel in her rocking chair, humming to her bees. The air shimmered oddly, like heat rising from pavement, and the bees swirled around her in a golden cloud. “Time to move on, my dears,” Mabel murmured, her voice soft as honey. “This town’s clean now. Plenty more weeds to pluck elsewhere.”
Jenny blinked, and the world seemed to shift. A mist rolled in, thick and glittering, swallowing the cottage. When it cleared, the garden was empty. The beehives were gone. Mabel was gone. Only a single jar of honey remained on the doorstep, labeled “For Jenny, with love.” Jenny, who’d once tattled on Mabel’s secret recipe to win a baking contest, felt her stomach lurch. She didn’t touch the jar.
By morning, Willowby buzzed with the news: Mabel had vanished. Some said she’d died, others that she’d moved to her sister’s in Cornwall. But Jenny, and a few sharp-eyed others, knew better. They pictured Mabel, her bees humming like a choir, drifting through the mist to some new town, some new garden. There’d be oleander blooming, and jars tied with ribbons, and richly deserving miscreants who’d soon learn what Mabel’s sweetness really meant.
In Willowby, life went on. The teashop stayed busy, the fences stayed white, and nobody died mysteriously anymore. But every so often, someone would find a wildflower on their doorstep, and they’d smile, thinking of Mabel. “Good luck to her,” they’d say, raising a teacup. “And good riddance to the rest.”

What a shame. I heard the woman in charge of this new change say that she’s getting so much positive feedback, and that owners of Cracker Barrels are asking for their stores to be remodeled. I’m sure that’s not what they’re hearing from the public.
I don’t understand why they can’t see what has happened to the brands I mentioned above, as well as others. I don’t know how things work internally, or with company stockholders, but it seems like it should be a simple decision to keep their current branding while making sure to treat all customers with respect. Maybe that’s too simplistic.

Russian Uber driver working illegally in the US was caught on camera head-butting a South Carolina CEO as he held his service dog, leaving the knocked-out rider with a brain injury, according to the victim and a new lawsuit.
Charleston-based CEO Bryan Kobel, 45, canceled a ride home from a French restaurant, Maison, in April because the driver refused to take his service dog, Kobel told The Post on Thursday.
Disturbing surveillance footage shows the driver — identified as Vadim Uliumdzhiev, 42 — suddenly marching over and knocking out Kobel as he holds his 17-pound golden doodle in the parking lot.
“The next thing I know, I’m waking up in a hospital bed with seven staples in my head and four stitches,” Kobel said. “It’s been a brutal experience to this day.”
Kobel, who is the CEO of a biotech company, suffered a concussion, amnesia, and scarring— and soon learned from cops the driver had gotten the Uber job with a fake license, he said.
“He’s bleeding very badly in the back of the head, we’re going to need an ambulance,” the caller said, according to 911 audio.
Uliumdzhiev was later arrested for assault and battery, records show. Immigration and Customs Enforcement then placed a hold on him, and he was transferred to a federal ICE processing center in Folkston, Ga., after posting a $10,000 bond for the assault, the Post and Courier noted.
In the weeks that followed, Kobel struggled to remember words and stumbled over phrases due to his brain injury.

Just as a point of interest, I’m going offline for a few minutes. I need to vacuum dust out of this computer, swap in a new drive, and install the latest version of Mint. Should be a bit less than an hour.

It took a little longer than anticipated because my little vacuum was out of charge, so I carried the beast into the laundry room at the other end of the house (it’s about 50 pounds) and vacuumed it with the regular vacuum there.

I was once an early-adopter of dustbusters, but now I don’t own any.
Instead, I have a Dyson DC41 All-Floors as our main household vacuum. I woulda druthered a Dyson pet vacuum, especially one which had a stair attachment, even though we don’t have a furry pet or stairs, but the DC41 works well.
One of the problems you have with vacuuming electronics is that fans work both ways. Under normal circumstances, they turn electricity from the motherboard into movement of air; but they can also turn movement of the fan blades into electricity on the motherboard……and you needn’t have much of that to regret it.
You can either have a very soft vacuum or stick a paperclip into the fan to keep it from turning, and there are lots of places where harsh air isn’t good for things. Note also that you can used canned dusters in your electronics as well, and these can still spin fans.
I think Hubby uses compressed air on rare occasions…
