DEAR MAGA: TGIF Open Thread 20240517

YES! It’s Preakness weekend. I can still hear the ads for Pimlico from the early 80s when I lived south of Baltimore. “HI HO PIMLICO!” Unfortunately, youtube doesn’t have the ad.

Baltimore Bang

  • Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon whiskey
  • 1 1/2 ounces apricot brandy
  • 1 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Orange slice, for garnish
  • Maraschino cherry, for garnish

Steps to Make It:
Gather the ingredients.

  • In a cocktail shaker, pour the whiskey, apricot brandy, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Fill with ice.
  • Shake well.
  • Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with a skewered orange slice and cherry flag. Serve and enjoy.

Uh, yeah, w-h-i-s-k-e-y is the spelling reserved for Irish whiskey. Everybody else it’s “whisky.”

Classic Bourbon Mint Julep

  1. Gather the ingredients.Ingredients to make classic mint julepThe Spruce Eats/Madhumita Sathishkumar
  2. Place 4 to 5 fresh mint sprig leaves and 2 sugar cubes, or 1/2 ounce simple syrup into a julep cup, collins glass, or double old-fashioned glass. Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and release the oil and aroma of the mint.Pour simple syrup into cup.The Spruce Eats/Madhumita Sathishkumar

Pims Cup

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Pimm’s No. 1
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • Ginger ale, to top
  • Garnish: cucumber slice
  • Garnish: mint sprig
  • Garnish: strawberry
  • Garnish: lemon wheel (optional)
  • Garnish: orange wheel (optional)

Steps

  1. Add Pimm’s No. 1 and lemon juice into a highball glass over ice, then top with ginger ale and stir briefly to combine.

DEAR MAGA: TGIF Open Thread 20240419

Rose Colored Glasses

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup amber spiced rum
  • 1/4 cup Rosy simple syrup*
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • raspberries, for garnish

Instructions

  • COMBINE all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake for 10 seconds, then pour into a hurricane glass. Top with ice and garnish with fresh raspberries.

* To make syrup: Bring 1/4 cup each granulates sugar and water and 1 cinnamon stick to a boil. Cool, then stir in 1 tbsp rosewater, 2 tbsp pureéd raspberries and 3/4 tsp vanilla. Strain before using.
