A guy in Ohio pointed his FINGER at the school board, and they went after him, armed with pictures of the pointing, and screen captures of online comments. Yeah.

SO – give the Nazis ZERO ammo. Keep any mention of violence, even joking, away from Wolf, so that he doesn’t have to “explain” humor to humorless jackboots who pretend not to know things.

As for discussion of “violent humor” among yourselves (e.g., “#TeamHeadsOnPikes”), just use whatever discretion you think is appropriate for yourselves. I will only put you in moderation if your comments create problems for ME or THIS SITE, but not if they only impact you.

YOU are responsible for your own comments, if they come knocking. YOUR choice. Just remember this…..

OTHER THAN THAT…….

The bottom line is Free Speech. Theories and ideas you don’t agree with must be WELCOME here, and you must be part of that welcoming. But you do NOT need to be part of any agreement.

Bottom line – respect other people’s FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.

Our only additional requirement is that you do so NICELY. Or at least try to make some effort in that direction.

We must endeavor to persevere to love our frenemies – even here.

Those who cannot deal with this easy requirement will be forced to jump the hoops of moderation, so that specific comments impugning other posters and violating the minimal rules can be sorted out and tossed in the trash.

The bottom line is Free Speech. Theories and ideas you don’t agree with must be WELCOME here, and you must be part of that welcoming. But you do NOT need to be part of any agreement.

DEAR MAGA: TGIF Open Thread 20230203

Man O’ War

(Yes, I know it’s not quite horse racing season, but….)

INGREDIENTS 

For The Man O’ War Cocktail:

  • ice cubes for chilling the glass and for the shaker
  • 1 1/2 ounces good-quality bourbonor your favorite rye whiskey
  • 1 ounce Cointreau or other orange liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice

For Garnish:

  • Brandied cherry
  • Lemon peel
  • Chill The Glass: Fill a coupe glass with ice and water and set aside.
  • Make The Man O’ War Cocktail: Add the bourbon (or rye or whiskey), Cointreau, sweet vermouth, and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker. Fill halfway with ice.Close and shake until it is thoroughly chilled (almost too cold to touch), at least 20 seconds. Taste and add more lemon if you want it more tart or more Cointreau if you want it sweeter.
  • Serve The Man O’ War Cocktail: Dump the ice water from the coupe glass. Strain the cocktail into the glass. Spear a brandied cherries and a bit of lemon peel onto a few cocktail toothpicks and garnish the glass. Serve.

I don’t get it. This morning I responded to a poll in the online blog of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC, the conservative answer to AARP) regarding cursive handwriting. Specifically: “Cursive writing (“handwriting”) has been on the decline for over a decade, though 21 states still mandate it in their curriculums. Should it still be taught?”

I found myself in the distinct minority by voting “No.” An overwhelming majority of respondents think cursive is necessary to read historical documents and foster critical thinking by 50 to 1. I know many of you will agree with that view; you will insist that the curricula of our old school days were more effective in training young minds and that cursive is an essential aspect of that.

But I simply do not agree. And, in a significant way, I have made my living by writing. I have been the author or coauthor of some 270 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 10 books, along with a handful of patents. And since 1983, all were done on some form of computer or another device that is not a pen. Admittedly, my handwriting was the despair of my parents and teachers.

Sure, I have jotted notes by hand. I have a file cabinet of my notes from grad school, and my lab notebooks were all handwritten. In some cases, such as with a potential patentable invention, such notebook entries were punctuated by a witness who had to attest in (hand)writing: “read and understood.”

But the vast majority of my written output had to be electronic, or my publishers would have thrown it back in my face! That’s just the simple reality. This got me thinking about some of the other anachronisms of my schooling, distinct from my education.

As the child of an educator, there are multiple reasons to learn cursive. The first is brain development. Small motor control in the fingers is another, which as a craft artist I can attest is necessary. Another is notation retention when things are written down. Of course, I have what has been described as pretty handwriting, so I’m biased.

I moved from the normal posting strategy, to “replying to the bigs”. Same problem – no traction.

What would happen if Trump came out against vaccines?

The mainstream media would light him up.
Millions of liberals would despise him and use that to attack.
Millions of moderate conservatives would turn on him for thinking he made a massive mistake, or lied to them, and they wouldn’t vote for him.

He’s doing pretty much the only thing he can given the situation.

Thought experiment, what would have happened if Trump didn’t do Warp Speed? Or if we had someone else in charge, like Hillary? They would have slow rolled the vaccine release to take years, meaning YEARS of lockdowns and far worse pandemic fall out.

“Warp Speed saved millions of lives”, Trump said. We know he talks in double speak. 8To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places. 11This was according to the eternal purpose which he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12in whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him.

JOHN 15:9-17

9As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17This I command you, to love one another.
