Today marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements of humanity, the landing of men on the moon for the first time, July 20th, 1969.
It was a long, long time coming. Technologically, we can trace it back to the first use of fire to smelt copper, or even further back to fire itself (see the back end of the Saturn V rocket), and stone tools.
Scientifically, it goes back to about 500 BCE, when people in a certain area of southeastern Europe we now call “Greece” began to think in a naturalistic way about the skies. Eclipses, both solar and lunar, were terrifying because they were unusual, they were thought to be bad omens; signals from the gods. But it had been noticed that solar eclipses could only happen at new moons, and lunar eclipses only at full moons. The Greeks, however, figured out why: A solar eclipse was due to the moon passing directly between the observer and the sun, while a lunar eclipse was the moon passing through the Earth’s shadow. Furthermore, the Sun’s path against the stars—the Zodiac—was figured out with ease; the moon’s path was harder to predict but did follow regular patterns. All you had to do was look forward to a situation where the sun and moon to be in the same place in the sky at the same time, and you knew there would be a solar eclipse; if the moon would be perfectly opposite from the sun, lunar eclipse. (Note: these descriptions of geometry are as seen from Earth) That took the mystery out of eclipses; they were totally predictable, and simply the result of regular movements of celestial bodies. It didn’t make sense to most people for eclipses to be omens if they could be predicted a hundred years in advance.
That began an over-two-thousand-year-long process of figuring out how things worked up there, and how big things were and how far apart they were. It was, for various reasons, far easier to figure out the sizes of the Earth and the moon, and the distance to the moon, than it was for the other planets and the Sun (we got our first good measurements of these things in the 1700s).
We knew, very roughly, sizes, distances, and shapes, but not the “how it works,” quite early in this timespan. But much of the real progress happened in the 1500s and 1600s. Copernicus put forward a new vision of a sun-centered universe, with the planets, including the earth, which had not before been considered a planet, in orbit around the sun, rather than everything going around the earth in circular orbits. He, however, insisted that the orbits were still circular, so the past two thousand years of observational data simply couldn’t be reconciled with his theory, any better than they could be with a simple geocentric model (but in the fullness of time, it would turn out he got the Big Idea right). Galileo saw things through the telescope that overthrew some of the dogmatism imposed on science by the Church (though the story is more complicated than that); but he still insisted on the circular orbits. The Jesuits knew (correctly) that that couldn’t be true. Galileo also did enough work in mechanics to lay the groundwork for Newton.

But before Newton, we have to talk about Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler. Brahe made observations of the planets’ positions (as seen from Earth) of unprecedented accuracy; Kepler was able to use these to discover that we were observing planetary motion along elliptical orbits…from an planet following an orbit that was also elliptical! The ellipses all had the sun at one focus, but they were of different sizes, shapes, had different orientations of their long axes, and were even tipped so they weren’t in the same plane. To top it off the motion wasn’t at a constant speed, either; it’d be slower at one end of the ellipse—the one furthest from the sun—and faster at the other end. Kepler was able to figure out that if you drew a line from the Sun to a planet (or the earth to its moon), that line would sweep out equal areas in equal times…a thinner, longer slice farther away, a wider, shorter slice when the planet was nearer to the sun.
He did this using nothing but the direction the planets appeared from earth—no distances (he had to figure them out!)—and he did it without calculus, without a calculator, and without knowing the law of gravitation. And I would love to know how he did it.
Many, many years later he figured out a relationship between the size of the orbit, and the period—the time it took to complete an orbit. For Earth that’s almost (but not quite) one tropical year.
So now, between Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler we had an accurate model of how the planets behaved. But we didn’t know why they did so, nor did we know how our own (prospective) spacecraft would behave “up there.”
Isaac Newton was the greatest scientist who ever lived. He put mechanics, the most basic branch of physics, on a firm footing, founded optics as a science, and he figured out that the force that caused the planets to orbit the sun, and the moon to orbit the earth, was the same force that makes things fall to the ground when you drop them. [That was a revelation. Up to then, things “up there” were believed to be fundamentally different from things “down here.”] And a spacecraft would be subject to the same forces. He could figure this out because he knew the distance to the moon, and realized that if some force followed the inverse square law, it matched the behavior of the moon in its orbit and the falling hammer. He also eventually proved that a force that followed such a law would cause things to move in elliptical orbits. He needed calculus to do this; unfortunately he didn’t have calculus. No one did, it didn’t exist. So he invented it. (Another person in Germany, Leibniz, were also inventing calculus at the time, but they didn’t know about each other’s work, so it’s effectively as if each of them invented it in full.)
At first, Newton didn’t publish this work; but someone else, trying to figure out what could make the planets moved in ellipses, asked him, and he told them. “Can you show me the proof?” was basically the response. Newton had to go look for the papers. While the greatest minds in Europe was wondering what could make planets move in elliptical orbits…Newton had found the answer and lost it!
(If you get the idea that I admire Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, you’re damned right I do!)
Of course we now call that force “gravity.” Here is the law that governs it (except near extremely massive objects, as Einstein discovered). If that looks complicated–it’s worse! It’s supposed to be a vector formula, with r and the two Fs as vectors.
At this point, we knew that to get to the moon, we’d have to fight earth’s gravity all the way, a quarter million miles or so, but that (at least) you could coast large parts of the way, much as the planets basically coast in their orbits around the Sun. We had some conception, finally, of what we’d have to do to make it happen. We ultimately learned we’d have to bring our own air with us, because our atmosphere didn’t extend to the moon; and we’d have to solve a huge number of other problems as well, problems people in the 1600s couldn’t dream of. But from this point forward, we basically knew the size of the problem and in principle what we had to do; now it was “just” engineering; creating craft that could do those things, and keeping people alive on them in a very adverse environment.
It should be noted that Apollo 11 could not have succeeded if our basic understanding of the Earth-Moon system, and the force of gravity, were wrong. Claiming that our theory of gravity is wrong, or that the earth and moon aren’t spheres of the sizes they are, or that the distance is wrong, is logically equivalent to the claim that we’ve never gone into space, much less to the moon, either manned or unmanned. If our theory is wrong, the things we’ve done based on it could not have been done.
So how was it done?
Our astronauts first had to be put in orbit around the Earth. This requires a rocket, a big one, because we have to go from moving about a thousand miles an hour relative to the earth (we get that from the fact that the earth is rotating on its axis) to moving at fifteen or sixteen <i>thousand</i> miles per hour, or roughly 7000 meters per second. The rocket has to get our astronauts, and their spacecraft, and their food and air, up above the atmosphere <i>and</i> moving at that speed, roughly horizontally. There are a couple of ways to convey how this works without getting technical. But it’s important to know they aren’t “beyond the reach of gravity” or anything like that. The Earth still pulls on them, they are still falling down, towards the earth, but they are moving so far sideways in the same amount of time that the earth, being spherical, has dropped away the same amount. Or you can look at it another way: the centrifugal force of moving around the earth in such a big circle counterbalances gravity. Newton used this concept of firing a cannon at higher and higher velocities to explain putting something into orbit.
The Saturn V—the billion horsepower wonder, the most powerful machine ever designed by man that wasn’t a big bomb—had three stages, all below the service module (cylindrical) and command module (conical). The astronauts lived in the command module; the service module supplied oxygen and included its own rocket motor for propulsion. The bottom two stages were jettisoned during the ascent, the third stage remained attached to the service module and command module in orbit.
I’ll point out here that the reason the Saturn V rocket was so big was because it had to be able to put the service module, command module and its own third stage, all into orbit at once. A heavy load like this required a heavy rocket.
So now that the Apollo astronauts were in orbit, the next step of the process was to wait until the right point in the spacecraft’s orbit around the earth, and fire the rocket in the third stage. This added more speed to the spacecraft…which has the effect of raising the other end of the orbit, lengthening the eclipse. Eventually, the ellipse was long (or tall, depending on your point of view) enough to reach the moon’s orbit.
It had to be aimed in the right direction when this happened, or it wouldn’t be headed toward the moon.
This started about three days of coasting, with the earth pulling back at Apollo 11 the whole time, gradually slowing it down as it climbed in it’s orbit. Remember what Kepler said about orbital speed?
One very important thing had to be done during this coast. The astronauts had to separate the command module and service module (together known as Columbia) from the Saturn V third stage, swivel around to face the third stage, and dock with the lunar module, the lander known as Eagle, which was stored in the third stage. They then had to pull the lander out of the third stage, and then continue on to the moon without the stage.
The Eagle had to be stored in the third stage, below/behind Columbia, because if it had been put on top of the command module during launch, it would have been shredded by the earth’s atmosphere. This was a complicated maneuver, and part of the Gemini program of the mid 1960s was learning how to dock spacecraft. It had a complicated name, too: it was called the transposition, docking, and extraction, and it was executed flawlessly by Michael Collins.)
By the time Apollo 11 got near the moon, it was traveling at a mere 1 mile per second. But, this was too fast! You see, Apollo 11 may have been near the moon, but it was traveling faster than the moon’s escape velocity. Without slowing down, it would just coast on by.
In fact, the third stage had also continued coasting after the extraction, and it was nearby. It would sail on past the moon, getting a slingshot and escaping earth entirely, going into its own orbit around the sun. It’s still out there, somewhere.
So it was time for another “burn”, this time pointed in the direction of travel, to slow Apollo 11 down. This was done by firing the rocket motor in the Service module. Once that was done, the astronauts were in orbit around the Moon! They waited about 30 orbits, then Armstrong and Aldrin moved into the lander, and detached from the Command Module.
All of this had been done before. Apollo 8 had orbited the moon and returned, and Apollo 10 had actually almost landed on the moon with its own “lander.” (Is it a lander if it never lands?)
But this time it was for real. A landing site had been picked, but there was much we did not know. One possibility was that the dust on the surface there would be so deep it would swallow the spacecraft. (Though we had sent unmanned craft to the moon earlier, and they had not got lost in deep dust, who knew if this part of the moon was the same way?) Also, we had never seen the landing site up close—it could be filled with boulders instead of being flat.
As it turned out, the landing site was treacherous, and Neil Armstrong had to burn more and more fuel, looking for a good place to land. He barely found one before he would have had to abort, and return to the Command Module,. That was why the mission controllers were almost blue in the face. Armstrong had just played “chicken” with the moon, and won.
“Tranquility Base. The Eagle has Landed.” Men were on the moon. Men were on the moon!
Think about that. We have existed as a species for something on the order of 200,000 years. And for 199,950 of those years, we had never been on the Moon.
(I was five when this happened. I don’t remember it, though I do remember Apollo 12. This is the one thing…the one thing…that sometimes makes me wish I were just a little bit older.)
Six and a half hours after landing, Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, soon to be joined by “Buzz” Aldrin.
President Nixon called them while they were setting up the flag (which was troublesome; far from being deep dust, just below surface it was so hard they couldn’t plant the pole). Nixon said:
Hello, Neil and Buzz. I’m talking to you by telephone from the Oval Room at the White House. And this certainly has to be the most historic telephone call ever made. I just can’t tell you how proud we all are of what you’ve done. For every American, this has to be the proudest day of our lives. And for people all over the world, I am sure they too join with Americans in recognizing what an immense feat this is. Because of what you have done, the heavens have become a part of man’s world. And as you talk to us from the Sea of Tranquility, it inspires us to redouble our efforts to bring peace and tranquility to Earth. For one priceless moment in the whole history of man, all the people on this Earth are truly one: one in their pride in what you have done, and one in our prayers that you will return safely to Earth.
One line bears repeating. Because of what you have done, the heavens have become a part of man’s world.
Soon enough, it was time to return. The top half of the lander, known as the ascent stage, blasted off, using the lower part of the lander as a launch pad. It had to rendezvous in orbit with Columbia, requiring exact timing on the launch (or it would reach orbit and Columbia would be somewhere else), and another docking maneuver. Then, with Armstrong and Aldrin back in Columbia the ascent stage was jettisoned. Columbia then did a burn to escape from lunar orbit, heading back to Earth.
The trickiest part was yet to come. On return to earth, there was simply no fuel left in the Service module. The two big burns near the moon, plus minor corrections, had used up everything. The craft couldn’t do another burn to go into orbit and then another to gracefully descend. Instead, the Service module, too, was abandoned, once it put the Command Module on a precise trajectory. It had to be aimed at the earth’s atmosphere at a very precise angle, one with would allow it to aerobrake. Too shallow and it’d basically bounce off the atmosphere, too steep, and it becomes a meteor.
Of course we know that they hit it right, and returned safely.
And return them safely to Earth…
The entire gigantic pile of explosives known as a Saturn V had been needed to send the Command Module to the moon and bring it back to Earth, to do an aerobrake because there was no fuel left. It was only made possible by using a light tin can of a lander and abandoning everything once it was no longer needed. Each abandoned piece was responsible for carrying the weight of the remaining part of the mission; if you think about that, that necessitates big pieces at the beginning, small ones at the end. So what did I mean by subtitling this, “A Triumph of Man Living In Freedom”?
This whole thing was made possible by man’s mind, his rational thought processes, his reason.
None of this could have happened, without minds free to think, free to reason. We’d never have understood what needed to be done.
None of this could have happened, without people free to build prosperous lives, to learn practical skills, or we’d never have had the resources nor the technical skills to do it.
Only FREE people could do these things. The Soviets came close…but they were piggybacking on the free world; they couldn’t have done it without free people, past and present.
And only FREE people can make any sort of progress, produce wealth which enhances our lives, allows us to thrive rather than just existing.
Don’t let them take it away from us. If they do, we lose not just what took us to the moon, we lose what we could do in the future. Worse, we also lose what makes it possible to thrive here on earth.

The world is watching as Iran seized a British oil tanker today. This, following on the heals of Iran shooting down a US drone and the US following suit by downing an Iranian drone.
Well, here is a piece of news that helps explain what is really happening….
Two Iranian ships are stranded in Brazil because Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras refuses to sell them the fuel needed to return to Iran due to sanctions imposed against Iran by the United States.
Reuters explained on Friday that the cargo ships Bavand and Termeharrived in Brazil a few months ago to deliver a shipment of petrochemical fertilizer and pick up loads of corn.
The Bavand was loaded up with 50,000 tons of corn and the Termeh is supposed to take on another 66,000 tons.
Carrying food back to Iran is legal under U.S. sanctions and Iran buys a great deal of corn from Brazil, but unfortunately for the Iranian captains, the Petrobras subsidiary that sells maritime fuel in Brazilian ports cited the U.S. sanctions and refused to refuel the ships. The Iranian government might need to send a tanker loaded with fuel all the way to Brazil to get the cargo vessels and their loads of corn.
Reuters explained that, unlike most ships employed in Iran’s agricultural trade with Brazil, the Bavand and Termeh are both flying Iranian flags. Iranian-flagged vessels usually arrive in Brazil with enough fuel to make it home, but that evidently was not the case with these two ships.
Petrobras stated that both Iranian ships appear by name on a list of sanctioned vessels, so refueling them could “have consequences for the oil company,” as Radio Farda put it. Petrobras is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and has operations in the United States, making it vulnerable to secondary sanctions.
Inflation runs rampant in Tehran as Iran’s government struggles to stem rising food prices
Tehran faces rising food prices and food shortages.
Iran’s government is running out of options to help stem the costs.
A local cook estimates prices have increased by 50% to 100% in the last year.
The cost of beef has gone from 380,000 rials a kilo three months ago to nearly 1.2 million rials per kilo, pricing out many families.
As U.S. sanctions on Iran extend into a second year, Iranian citizens are paying the price with skyrocketing costs and food shortages.
Jafar Ghaffari, a cook in Tehran, is one of the many Iranians struggling to keep up with the rising cost of food. He says prices have increased by 50% to 100% in the last year.
Ghaffari says his weekly shopping trip, which cost him 7 million rials [$50] just three months ago, now costs him 14 million rials ($100) a week, nearly half the average Iranian’s salary.

Unable to realize the economic benefits of the nuclear deal, Iran is facing high inflation, a devalued currency and an economy that the International Monetary Fund predicts will shrink by 6% this year.
The Iranian government has found its hands tied as prices on foods climb higher, pricing out the population, whose average monthly salary of 32 million rials equals only $220.
In 2018, the rial lost nearly 60% of its value. With less buying power (the exchange rate for the dollar on the free market is 145,000 rials), Iranians are finding they can’t stretch their paychecks anymore.
The rial is collapsing, inflation is spiraling out of control, sanctions prevent Iran’s from selling oil (and now even buying fuel for it’s cargo ships loaded with food), and the cost of food inside Iran is getting so bad that…
Factories that make baking essentials have run out of raw ingredients and some have either stopped manufacturing altogether or sell products at an inflated price off the books. The government has tried to step in and force manufacturers to sell, but there is little upside for those factories to pay workers and sell goods below their cost. It’s cheaper to shutter their doors.
Don’t forget, the Iranian gov’t…it’s regime…is unpopular inside Iran. And now this.
PDJT has put the mullah’s controlling Iran into an impossible economic situation. Inflation is spiraling out of control with the gov’t UNABLE to do anything to curb it, and it’s people are now starting to go hungry.

What I find remarkable here is that these two women standing here, in the video in this tweet by Ilhan Omar – namely Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley – minus their comrades, Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocacio-Cortez – represent two things which both want WITH INCREDIBLE FEROCITY to take away MY rights and MY freedoms.
Namely, COMMUNISM and ISLAMISM.
In fact, they want to take away EVERYBODY’S rights – all in the name of “equality”.
In doing so, those two things – communism and Islamism – have LITERALLY gerrymandered REALITY ITSELF in every possible IMAGINARY way except the ways that matter.
But what I find MOST ODD is the following.

GREENVILLE — President Donald Trump plans to hold a campaign rally at East Carolina University in Greenville later this month.
The website for the president’s re-election campaign states the rally will be held at ECU’s Minges Coliseum July 17.
Word of the rally began spreading on social media on Tuesday. There was no official announcement from ECU or the Trump campaign. However, the Trump-Pence website states the event will be a 7 p.m. at Williams Arena. Supporters who hope to attend can register for two tickets apiece.
The visit is set for the same day that former special counsel Robert Meuller is scheduled to testify before Congress about his investigation of the president.
National political websites, including Polictico and The Hill, reported late Tuesday that the president is visiting Greenville because he sees North Carolina as a key battleground state.
“President Trump looks forward to returning to North Carolina and sharing the successes of the Trump presidency,” Michael Glassner, the Trump campaign’s chief operating officer, said in a press release reported by The Hill. “North Carolina has one of the hottest economies in the nation, and that is directly attributable to the pro-growth, deregulatory policies of this administration. With one of the largest military populations in the nation, President Trump is eager to talk directly to the military men and women who have made this country the greatest on earth.”

In the middle of the night, waiting for dogs to go out and in, I read an article but couldn’t find it this morning. Smiley2 piped up and said, “You mean this one? Here it is.”, like Smiley2 was sitting on my shoulder. It started me thinking about personal connections, over miles, and people who just seem to fit together, and how is that possible among so many people? Destiny? Fate? As if there is a plan when we know there cannot be? Matrix? Hand of God? What are the chances of such freak events?
And yet, it does happen to all of us.
Whenever I fly through Atlanta (cuz if you die and go to heaven or hell — you HAVE to go through Atlanta, first), I run into someone I know. What are the chances? When I left the south and moved to Manhattan for a brief stint, I ran into an old high school teacher (from New Orleans), the couple who lived across from us when I was a kid (Chicago burbs), and the guy who used to babysit me (from Mississippi). Not planned, not called and arranged, sheer chance.
We went through a few months, while we were renovating the B&B, where I was constantly in some kind of peril. It happened 3-4 times, wasps after me, an overloaded truck which “burst”, a flat tire on an interstate. Every time, it was the same elder fellow who rescued me. I haven’t been “in peril” since, and rarely was, but what are the chances of the same man, being in the same place…… to rescue me….. over and over again? He became my human angel. For years, when we would run into each other, he would touch me gently on the elbow, “You, okay? Just checkin’ on you.” He had crystal blue eyes which could see straight through me. I loved that man.
And then there are the weird things which happen, which turn out surprisingly well. When Big T and I were still dating, we took off to the Ozarks after Christmas for a few days. We went up and down mountains and hills, all over Missouri and Arkansas. On the way home, Friday night before New Year’s Eve, the car began shaking like San Francisco earthquake. I was barely able to control it and the acceleration died……. I barely coasted into a parking lot on the side of the road — an AutoZone parking lot. What are the chances?
At Autozone, an incredibly helpful young man looked at the car, and said, “transmission fluid”. We bought some, poured it in, an it came straight out the bottom of the car. Dead Minivan. I looked across the top of the car at Big T, to begin to decide what we should do……… but over his shoulder…… across an empty lot…… was a Ford Dealership. We spent the night in Searcy, Arkansas, and bought a car the next day…….. for which we got a great deal…. since it was New Year’s Eve. Made it home in time for fireworks.
Then, there are the really strange, kizmit occurrences, where one thing leads to another. The following story is pretty odd.
About 15yrs ago, I did business with a Chinese salesman in Xiamen. We became friends over several years of regular orders. One day, I received a frantic phone call from him and a plea for help. He wanted “me” to help “him” save a large order which had nothing to do with me. “Why would I help him with another order?”, I thought, “Not my place, and I’m halfway around the world.” Yet, he sounded so desperate and urgent, I stopped to listen to his plight.
The order was worth several million dollars to his company, about 1.5 million sq.ft. of pavers for a large city square in Cyprus. The son of the Mayor had been sent to the Stone Show to finalize the deal. For a few days, everything was fine as my guy escorted the Mayor’s son all over town, spending a lot of money on restaurants and bar bills. Yet, the son had been seduced by a young female/attractive hooker/stone salesman who was willing to do anything to steal the order. My guy, learned they planned to leave the stone show for the competition’s factory in Hebei the following morning……. he could see his order slipping away…. and he worked on it for almost two years. I could hear the tears in his voice. Hard thing for any man to do… to cry to a woman.
Changing tone, he railed against the stone color in Hebei, which I already knew was wrong for the order. In his fury, he sent me a photo of the Mayor’s son, and the hooker/stone saleswomen, wound around each other at an expensive restaurant. I told him to let me think, and I would call him back, which I did in about 20 minutes. He was convinced the order was lost, and anything I could do to save it was fine with him.
The Mayor’s son and hooker had recently left the restaurant, late evening in China. I picked up the phone and called the Mayor in Cyprus to rat out his son. Yet, the Mayor already left for the day(4-5hrs time difference). If I waited until morning to talk to the Mayor, the son would be gone. Undeterred, I called the Fire Chief of the Town in Cyprus…… cuz the Fire Chief can always get a hold of a Mayor, right? That’s kind of a universal law between Mayors and Fire Chiefs, right? Through broken English, I found the Mayor at home. We spoke briefly, then he called me on Skype.
I spoke to the Mayor as a mother of “another fine family” who cared for their sons. His son was shaming their family name and all of Cyprus. People were laughing at his son. He was drinking too much and “easily fooled by loose women of bad reputation”. I laid it on thick. I had sons as well and this kind of behavior was unacceptable when representing the family AND his country. Of course, I also included the info about the Hebei stone, which I knew well, and that the stone he would receive in Cyprus would be all wrong, and bad for the town…. which would embarrass him. I did it in the kindest possible terms, and attached the photo of his son, compromised. Because I was talking to the Mayor from home, his wife was in the background. She was upset. I understood why.
Well, all hell broke loose at the stone show. The contract went through for my guy, asap. My little Chinese stone salesman was convinced I could do ANYTHING (not hardly). The factory owners called to thank me, profusely. The Mayor in Cyprus and his wife called me back, thanked me. The SON called me to apologize. Over the next year of the contract, I sent OUR team in to supervise the quality of the stone delivered to Cyprus. It was perfect… cuz OUR name was on it, the Americans, and I did it at our expense. The brownie points accumulated lasted me for years.
Over the course of the contract, the Mayor and I became friendly. We did business together for other smaller things through the years. Flash forward several years …… my own son was turning 17, between Junior and Senior year of high school. He worked hard, was fairly well set for college, and desperately wanted to spend a month on a beach….. somewhere….. like he did when he was little and we had the beach cottage. Yet, I couldn’t leave for a month, and he was at the age where a vacation with parents was not what he had in mind. A month away, for a 17yr old, was incredible expensive and I couldn’t justify it… unless there was some kind of miraculous added value.
We thought about it. He was almost done with his pilot’s license. I would consider sending him to a beach in Pensacola for 7-10 days if he finished. Yet, he was already involved in a program through his school and scheduled to finish anyway. Florida changed their laws and he couldn’t check into a hotel unless age 25. He asked about a diving school. Maybe if he spent a month, somewhere, he could pick up several certifications and make it almost to master diver. Okay, I was listening, but not committed yet.
Gunner came back to me with a proposal for a PADI school in Mexico, where he could work at the scuba shop and also dive. Maybe getting 4 certifications in a month. Not enough for me and not fond of the location within Mexico. Where would he live? He found another one at the northern tip of Sardinia, Italy, which guaranteed him to get all the way through Master Diver Cert – in 6 weeks – for about $20K. Well, that was out. Too rich for my blood. Other locations in the Caribbean were expensive and we might fight hurricane season. Gunner was frustrated and still looking. On a lark, I picked up the phone and called the Mayor in Cyprus, at home. I helped him with his son, and now I needed a favor for my own son.
The Mayor knew exactly what to do.
The Mayor hooked me up with a guy named Pericles on the island of Kos who was an old friend of his. We went back and forth several times to make arrangements. Pericles was former Greek Special Forces, about 65yrs old back then, built his own extraordinary 85′ diving ship…… and worked with Jacques Cousteau to map the floor of the Mediterranean. Could I possibly find anyone better to influence my son? Um, yeah, that would work. What are the chances?
Pericles, his wife and daughter ran a PADI cert school on the southwestern side of Kos. Gunner could work with Pericles and other crew, on the boat, every day except Sunday, live with the family, and Pericles would make sure Gunner went all the way through Master Diver in 6 weeks. BUT….. Gunner might have to help all those pretty little northern European tourist girls on vacation with their scuba tanks along the way. Oh, my……. poor Gunner.
Total cost, the airplane ticket and a little bit of spending money, about $2500-$3000 in total, and he had half of it already saved to kick into the kitty. How could I refuse such an opportunity? For months, Gunner dreamt of freedom in the Greek isles (with a guy who reminded me of Ernest Hemingway only shorter) at the height of tourist season, sea spray in his face, ready to explore the oceans. As the day for departure grew closer, he packed, he bought “stuff”, extra clothes, bathing suits, dive knives, equipment, etc. The suitcases were open in his room for two weeks. He was excited.
But it didn’t happen.
Gunner was scheduled to leave about July 6th, and the “migration” began a few days before. Greece was in crisis and the local banks/ATM’s were shuttered. It looked REALLY bad. No way I could send my 17yr old into what looked like a revolution. He stayed home and was SICK about it. Still angry.
Flash forward. I just received an email from the Mayor in Cyprus. Haven’t spoken to him in 5 years. His youngest grandson has decided to attend Ole Miss University. He’s sending his grandson to me. He’ll be here for fall semester. And of course, his home is open to us anytime we happen to be in Cyprus.
Might be a while……
Bottom line, we never really know who we will meet on any given day. We have no way to forecast times of “peril”, a dead minivan, running into an old friend in a distant city, simple thing like a flat tire, or a connection that might lead to working with an incredible man in the Mediterranean.
Life can be most exciting, if we let it happen.
So, be kind and take a moment to listen. If you are able to, help. Embrace the idea of chance meetings. You never really know where it will lead, but it will make life colorful, rich, and worthwhile.
This strikes home for me, because it really tells the tale of how I ended up over at CTH, as a TRUMP SUPPORTER seeking shelter at a TRUMP BASTION, before we all came here with Q.
I was all over Disqus and Breitbart for years, under Obama. I knew that we HAD to STOP the Obama insanity, soon to become Hillary insanity, in 2016, or we were in real trouble. And I was absolutely unsure WHICH Republican presidential hopeful was the one to END the Prog-Nazi insanity that we were all slowly marching toward.
I was probably behind EVERY one of the GOP presidential hopefuls for at least 30 minutes, some for 30 hours, and a few for 30 days or more. Significant among them:
Rand Paul
Ted Cruz
Ben Carson
John Kasich
I even had a few flirtations with Carly Fiorina until learning about her strong CIA associations, and “feelings” toward Marco Rubio, until I realized that he was being strongly manipulated by others (neocon pool-boy). I tried to talk myself into “acceptance” of Jeb Bush a few times, as a feasibility test, and I learned to love Chris Christie as he warmed up to Trump.
However, it was TRUMP who stole my affections from the four listed above, and from TED CRUZ most of all. TED actually stayed on top of my list for quite a while, until Trump came along. Indeed, speaking up nicely but a bit too strongly for TRUMP got me kicked off of The Right Scoop. Imagine that.
Ultimately, I agree with Sundance – only Trump had the special street smarts to get past the cunning communists.
ANYWAY….
We have all been through a lot of fascinating shared history with Trump. But I think it’s time for me to quote myself on this, for the very first time:
Get used to it. Trump speed is the new normal. Some will call it flip-flopping, but that’s not what it is. Trump is dodging and weaving through reality faster than the reality can react to disrupt his plans.
I was explaining this to my wife. This is a roller-coaster now. Trump is no longer waiting for people to keep up. He is taking his bewildering art-of-the-deal campaign schtick into geopolitics, and for a lot of people who can’t keep up or hold on, it will be a rough ride.
