Everybody needs to wake the heck up.
There should be more hacks and major failures than are presently known, IMO. Just judging from how bad the non-Tesla automatic driving software is on a car I’m familiar with. That car should be swimming in hacks and failures.
I think the people who have gotten past the back doors are mostly staying quiet.
I have my doubts that the problems are “hacks,” or you are correct, there would be more of them. I think they are design failures, or flaws in the system.
Intelligence in the physical universe makes mistakes and has vulnerabilities.
Tesla self-driving has an excellent record, and I believe it is really good, because I’ve watched it and was very impressed. Nevertheless, it cannot be perfect. There will be problems, even if the rate of them is very small. I believe that combination of software weak points with human error will be a big part of the problem.
It wasn’t the car, it was the driver.
Now we just have to find out if the driver was paid to make Tesla look bad as an act of industrial sabotage, and if so, was he a deranged loner or was he paid to do it.
Either way, not sure how he doesn’t face murder charges.

The data from the Tesla will likely determine the degree of guilt of the human. If the accelerated speed was longer than 15 seconds it is likely that the accident was intentional and would qualify as a homicide. If the high speed was relatively brief, there is a case for accidental death.
Not necessarily. In my case the woman clearly panicked and traveled a good mile accelerating the entire way. It was a lot longer than 15 seconds.

I don’t believe it, at least not the way the article presents it, that’s not how FSD operates. It would have to be some kind of catastrophic failure that never presented in over 11 billion (with a B) miles of data.

Seems a bit weird for FSD to lack a governor of some sort for residential speed zones. My understanding is that each car transmits a shitload of data to the cloud every second, as well as recording it on the vehicle. How could the software ALLOW a speed of … say, more than 15mph above the speed limit in a residential area. The GPS knows where the car is at all times, does it not?
This smells worse than fish laid out in the summer sun for a couple of days.
This is one reason I’m favoring simple but unexpected causes, like an intermittent power failure or oscillating connection in the vehicle circuitry, outside the AI.
A single degraded contact, subject to vibration, in a circuit with a “smart” auto-resetting GFCI, can result in amplification of a false signal via the power system, and system-wide perturbation of all circuitry. This is largely outside the AI’s control. Thus, the software is essentially falling asleep at the wheel, but unable to wake up OR konk out, trapped in a state where it cannot judge enough to hit the brakes, and unable to fall asleep and enter a protective shutdown.
TL;DR – AI is being strangled by some minion circuit that has flipped out.
This might look like a hack, but it’s just buried intelligence being a zombie at the wrong time in a totally fluke but successful way.
I would expect Tesla to have multiple fail-safes to prevent any such occurrence or chain of events, but we’ll see.
I disagree only with the word “any”! IMO this is a lot like airplane accidents. Flukes will happen, and human error looms large in that tiny subset. I suspect that the driver did something unexpected, and even the driver may be unaware of what they did.
For example, if the AI handed over control to the driver, and the driver was hitting the accelerator, THINKING they were hitting the brakes, or simultaneously WITH the brakes, they could have no idea they were in fact causing the speeding condition..

Tesla FSD is designed to move with the traffic flow, so if you are in a country or state or area where traffic is going 10mph over the limit (for example), the Tesla moves with the traffic, instead of acting as a mobile orange parking cone and getting in everyone’s way.

Just read this after my previous answer, so they’re independent. YES – very likely that the driver THOUGHT he was hitting the brakes, when he was not.
I used to have this problem with a particular car, wearing certain footwear. Unexpected braking and acceleration by hitting both pedals at the same time. Also, when coming out of cruise control, this was more of a problem, sometimes hitting the WRONG pedal entirely.
I got hit by a car where the driver did that. I was stopped and watched her throw her hands over her head and STOMP…. on the accelerator instead of the break. She hit me when I was entirely off the road and on the shoulder.
If she had done NOTHING except continue on, there would have been no accident.

That sounds like a design flaw, which should have been revealed during 11+ billion miles of test data (i.e., real-world driving data of all Tesla cars from the first model ‘S’ in 2012 to the present).

IMO it’s driver error. The basic 2-pedal and 3-pedal designs of accelerator, brake, and optional clutch, are already optimal in a configuration where hitting both is possible but unlikely, and if so, is the fault of the user, not the car.
I’m sure this happened many times during Tesla testing, and was deemed (correctly) to be human error.
People are responsible for knowing which pedal to depress. End of story. Unless the pedals are tiny and right next to each other, it’s not the fault of the car design. Tesla has a reasonable pedal design.

Not free market if they are using unfair trade practices, now is it? Whichever way it is achieved, it is still a free market economy in which companies are allowed to profit from people buying their poison, even though it is poison.
You could be right in that if they 100% nail Big Pharm for the Big Lie and they get criminalized and sued out of existence, who is going to manufacture the stuff that is actually needed? So they can expose Fauxi and minions to whatever criminal and legal exposure as going rogue while leaving room for the companies to continue operating. I doubt that they can make the outer shell the same consistency as that of the other colors by using chocolate. They’re not just aiming for color, but also the same texture as the originals.
Right, make the shells out of whatever they normally do, presumably it’s a clear coat of some kind, otherwise starting with a colored base coat and trying to create another color is going to complicate things.
If you start with a clear base coat, then add a little brown chocolate for brown color.
Or boil the clear-coat with onion skins to make it brown. My Mom used to boil eggs with onion skins to make chocolate-brown colored Easter eggs.

I just bought two bags of “woke” peanut M&Ms, and I am sad to report that the new paper bags are easily ripped and broken, and start getting tears in them just by handling. Gail is correct, it just screws on or off. The antenna base is secured to the underside of the fiberglass body, then a chromed bezel is threaded onto the base, and then last, the antenna screws into the base, through the chromed bezel, with the bottom of the antenna covered by the chromed bezel.
Edit: I just checked it, it’s right next to my original 1967 Corvette antenna from my Dad’s Corvette, the one I’ve been slowly restoring for many years now.
They are very similar, but the 1967 antenna is threaded at the bottom, so the ’67 screws in.
The 1969 fixed antenna rod is not threaded at the bottom, it is smooth, so it must have been retained by friction fit, or maybe it was squeezed tight by the interior circumference of the Cap (chrome hex-nut, Item 2, GM 3943656), I’m not sure.
There is a ground plate (aluminum, Item 5, GM part no. 3921443) attached to the underside of the body, reinforced by Item 6 (GM 3921444).
The antenna body assembly (Item 7, GM 3948947) comes up through the reinforcement and ground plate, with the top extending up through the fiberglass car body.
On top of the car body (outside of the car) you have a rubber gasket (Item 4, GM 3820672, see photo also), a decorative chrome bezel (Item 3, GM 3921439), another rubber gasket (Item 15, GM 3138635), followed by the Cap (chrome decorative hex nut, Item 2, GM 3943656).
Then the fixed antenna (Rod & Mast Assembly, GM 3943654) gets inserted down the center.

The security of the righteous. (1-3) Prayer for them, The ruin of the wicked. (4,5)
1-3 All those minds shall be truly stayed, that are stayed on God. They shall be as Mount Zion, firm as it is; a mountain supported by providence, much more as a holy mountain supported by promise. They cannot be removed from confidence in God. They abide for ever in that grace which is the earnest of their everlasting continuance in glory. Committing themselves to God, they shall be safe from their enemies. Even mountains may moulder and come to nothing, and rocks be removed, but God’s covenant with his people cannot be broken, nor his care of them cease. Their troubles shall last no longer than their strength will bear them up under them. He came home the most decorated American soldier of the entire war. Every valor award the Army could give, some of them more than once, plus French and Belgian honors on top.
Life magazine put his baby face on the cover, James Cagney saw it and invited him to Hollywood, and the cotton picker who couldn’t pass a physical became a movie star. He made over 40 films. In 1955 he played himself in To Hell and Back, the movie of his own memoir, and it was Universal’s biggest hit until Jaws came along twenty years later.
But the war never let go. He had what we now call PTSD, slept with a loaded pistol under his pillow, and got hooked on sleeping pills trying to outrun the nightmares. He kicked the addiction by locking himself alone in a motel room for a week. Then he did something almost no famous man did back then: he went public, told the country that combat had wrecked his nerves, and pushed the government to study and treat what war does to a soldier’s mind.
He died in a plane crash in 1971 at just 45 years old. They buried him at Arlington, where his simple headstone is the most visited grave in the cemetery after John F. Kennedy’s.
Every branch told him he was too small to fight. He outfought all of them, then spent the rest of his life trying to help the men who came home broken like he did.
