  • 2 fluid ounces gin 
  • 1 tablespoon triple sec
  • 1 cup ice

Directions

  • Step 1
  • Place 1 cup ice in an old-fashioned glass. Set aside. Combine gin, triple sec, and 1 cup ice in a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake until chilled. Strain into the prepared old-fashioned glass.

NOTE THAT ACTUAL FLIERS DO NOT IMBIBE WHILE FLYING.

Former Intel Officials Want Efforts to Break Up Big Tech Stopped – Data Control and Retention of Social Media Partnership Is a National Security Imperative

Former Obama era intelligence officials, those who helped construct, organize and assemble the public-private partnership between intelligence data networks and supported social media companies, have written a letter to congress warning that any effort to break up Big Tech (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google, Microsoft, etc.) would be catastrophic for the national security system they have created.

Citing the information control mechanisms they assembled, vis-a-vis the ability of social media networks to control and approve what is available for the public to read and review, the intelligence officials declare that any effort to break up the private side of the intel/tech partnership will only result in less ability of the intelligence apparatus to control public opinion.

They willfully admit that open and uncensored information is adverse to the interests of the intelligence state and therefore too dangerous to permit.   They specifically argue, if the modern system created by the partnership between the U.S. government and Big Tech is not retained, the national security of the United States is compromised.  Let that sink in for a moment.

The entire piece is worth a read, and SHOCKER, the letter was actually signed by Admiral Mike Rogers.

So, the question of who is wearing what color hat or is a mole in one operation or the other is still on the table.

That makes Elon Musk’s moves even more intriguing.

Elon Musk, whom multiple outlets have called “the real Tony Stark,” is maneuvering to take over one of the biggest tech companies in the world — no small task. Undeterred by the board’s rejection of his first offer of $43 billion to purchase Twitter, Musk now appears to be moving to “plan B.” 

According to The Daily Wire, Musk, the world’s richest man, “slightly shifted his strategy in his attempt to buy out Twitter and take the company private.”

The New York Post reports that Musk, who offered to buy Twitter on April 14, is now seeking to finance the takeover plan “in a complex deal that raises debt against both the company and possibly his own stock, as well as a giant cash equity infusion from co-investors.”

This plan differs from the plan detailed in an SEC filing last week, which stated he was “offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter and a 38% premium over the day before my investment was publicly announced.”

Sources reportedly told the New York Post that Musk was now planning to increase his original $3.4 billion investment in Twitter stock to up to $15 billion in order to take the company private.

He’s busy exposing the public/private partnership involving the Intelligence Community surveilling all of us all day every day for the totalitarian move it is.

And he’s serious about it, too.

Speaking to reporters at the White House Wednesday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki mocked Americans who joyfully took off their masks earlier this week after a federal judge struck down the Centers for Disease Control mandate. 

Psaki claimed “just one” plane full of passengers reacted positively to the news. There are dozens of videos showing relieved passengers freeing their faces, with thousands of flight reactions that went undocumented. 

Which is why Twitter was loaded with videos of cheering passengers earlier in the week.

Reminds one of medical personnel at abortion clinics when exorcism prayers are read outside. They scream and throw tantrums just like demons about to be sent back to where they came from.

Elon Musk Takes Aim At ‘Woke’ And ‘Unwatchable’ Netflix

Billionaire Elon Musk is not making any friends from the progressive faction on social media ever since he made an offer to purchase Twitter, but now he has taken aim at them again.

Between January and March Netflix lost around 200,000 subscribers it said in its quarterly report yesterday which caused the stock to fall 25 percent, and Musk believes that it is because the service is “unwatchable” because of wokeness.

“The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable,” he said in response to a report from Slashdot.

I’m very glad I conducted this experiment. I was able to gather an overall understanding of how people define these words we use so often. And my hypothesis was correct, and that’s is, collectively, we do not posses the same exact definition(s). However, I think we all have a somewhat similar understanding.

Let me clarify what I as an individual mean when I use these terms, and I think this will help many to better comprehend my analysis.

Some use these terms separately, suggesting there is a spectrum of “asleepness”, which I certainly agree there is a spectrum. It’s not black and white as to who is awake and who is asleep. There is lots of gray. However, I view both “normie” and “sheep” synonymously and use them interchangeably. My personal Definition:

-“Mainstream Media-dependent, brainwashed individuals, lacking any original or critical thought. Victims of mass psychological manipulation via state-controlled media.”

The reason the word “normie” is used to describe these people is because for decades the societal norm was you believed what the newspapers said, you believed the man on the TV, and blindly went along with all of the prescribed narratives because that’s just what everyone else did. The truth came from the TV and that’s how it worked. Social media ruined that, and the societal norms for how people consumed news changed DRASTICALLY with the introduction of the Internet followed by social media, which led to a mass variety of viewpoints and alternative narratives. As opposed to the past where the entire messaging for a nation came from 2-3 news channels and a handful of newspaper companies. “Normies” are victims of outdated societal norms, which sadly includes being heavily brainwashed for political purposes by MSM.

The reason the word “sheep” is used to describe these people is because sheep are a species who, instinctually, blindly follow the herd and are incredibly easy to manipulate. Complacent inside their prison so long as they have food and protection.

Notice how amongst this thread I have yet to mention left or right? That’s because there are normies/sheep on both sides of the aisle. Anyone who blindly gets their opinions from the TV, you’re a sheep as far as I’m concerned. Left or Right. So when people in my comments screech “normies don’t watch Fox and Friends! NoBoDy iZ WaKiNG uP!” You’re simply wrong. Millions upon millions are dependent on the TV to confirm things for them. Even if they think something they saw on social media might be true, they don’t accept it as fact until the TV says so.

Another point I wanted to address, that many claim “sheep are asleep and will always be asleep”. And I vehemently disagree. Yes there will be around 4-6% who are permanently brainwashed and may never recover, but every last one of us was a sheep at some point and we woke up at separate times. Nobody popped out of the womb red pilled and totally aware. Just because some people are taking longer than you did, doesn’t mean they are a lost cause. We have to undo decades of high level psychological manipulation and brainwashing. It’s incredibly difficult and time consuming. And don’t forget we have progressed so much from 2016, but many don’t notice it since it’s been slow and methodical. A controlled normalization as opposed to shock and awe.

And let me be clear, none of these people are a “lost cause”, yet. They have been psychologically manipulated. Their brains drilled with lies from sources and people they have been conditioned to trust since birth, warping their sense of reality. It’s not their fault. They should not have to suffer because nefarious entities manipulated them their entire lives.

The overwhelming majority of these people are good, intelligent, kind, loving, and want a better future for all of us, but they are quite literally brainwashed and are not thinking on their own. And I care about many of them, even if I find their ignorance annoying.

Elon Musk’s Bid Reveals Twitter Is The Poison Pill To Be Cured

I’ve given Elon Musk a lot of grief in the past over how he’s run Tesla Motors. Suffice it to say I’m not a fan. Deep down I’m supremely distrustful of Musk because he is, at best, a mercurial figure who is difficult to read.

He’s become the richest dude in the world partnering with governments to build some of the biggest hype machines in history. So, his offer to buy all of Twitter and take it private can cynically be seen as just another moment of ego from the 21st century’s best reincarnation of P.T. Barnum.

That said, however, strange things happen, when you acquire the kind of Fuck You Money that Musk has.

And it seems to me if you connect some dots that Musk has been planning this move for a while. Last year he came out in favor of Bitcoin. Then he took a memecoin, DOGE, and turned it into the crypto ‘flavor of the month.’

Musk’s ego is something to remain skeptical of, but it’s also hard not to respect a guy who is completely free at this point, or least free enough that he has zero fucks left to give to the regime that made him what he is.

So, when he cashed out a massive amount of money from Tesla at the peak recently it looked to me that he was getting ready to go from Elon Musk Reality TV star to the Real Elon Musk.

Most people, especially clueless bitches like Elizabeth Warren, don’t understand that most rich people are asset rich, but cash poor. Jeff Bezos may have billions of Amazon stock, but he really can’t sell a lot of it without giving a vote of no-confidence to the company itself.

It runs counter to his fiduciary interest as a board member. This isn’t to say Bezos doesn’t have money. He does, but he also doesn’t have nearly the amount of money you think he has.

So, Musk, freed from Tesla’s financial, shall we say creativity, now has real Fuck You Money. Not stock. Not assets. Cash.

And that cash he’s putting on the line today to force the moment of Twitter’s malfeasance as a public entity to its crisis point.

He has succeeded brilliantly.

He doesn’t even need to actually take control of Twitter. He’s already won.

By forcing Twitter’s board, who doesn’t own any shares in the company, to adopt a Poison Pill strategy, Musk has revealed them to be more interested in maintaining Twitter as a social control response engine rather than as a public company with a responsibility to shareholders.

And the world thanks you.

Funny. I didn’t see any wars being fought by the United States Military in the way of which we’ve become so accustomed in that time frame.

So I need you to ask yourself – what, exactly, was he referring to?

Allow me to answer this for you – He was referring to taking down the cabal. You see – the war he is/was commanding is a new kind of war. It isn’t overt. It isn’t fought with boots on the ground. It has been fought for decades through backdoor deals, black ops, and infiltration of every single American institution. It is a war we’d still be unaware of if not for Q.

As Reagan feared – we have been rotted from the inside out.

So how do you fix the rot? The same way. From the inside out. You infiltrate [their] institutions. You play along with [them], you make friends with [them]. You spend so much time around [them], that knowing how [they] operate becomes second nature.

Game theory.

Think Trump’s association with the Clintons, or Epstein. Or Flynn’s association with certain unsavory characters. Infiltration goes both ways, frens.

The moment Trump turned on them at the Al Smith dinner, they knew they were done. The moment he stood in the lobby of the CIA and said he was dismantling the “5th Column”, they knew they had no way out.

And yesterday, when John Durham said “we have it all” – [they] had to face the grim reality that Q isn’t a larp. That Durham isn’t bullshitting around, and that Trump wasn’t lying when he said “we caught the swamp … we caught them all”.

It is slow. It is painful for all involved. I remind you that we were told “it had to be this way”. And I don’t know about you, but everyday that passes I see more and more waking up. I see more and more liberals ditching their support for Democrats and the far left.

People truly needed to be shown how deep the corruption and evil went. Simply telling them would have done no good at this point.

The Great Awakening is also The Great Unveiling.

We are all being forced to look in a mirror and adjust our perspective, priorities, and even our faith. We are all being made to feel fear at it’s most primal level – for that is when fight or flight kicks in, and I truly believe [they] are about to see that the majority of humans will in fact choose fight over flight.

And therein lies the purpose of the scare event being necessary. Because only legitimate fear awakens the warrior in every soul.

We all feel it. Even myself. If you say you aren’t a little afraid or worried at this point, you’re lying. It’s okay to be afraid, but make sure to let it pass. Don’t hold on to it. Don’t allow it to dictate the level of faith, hope, or love you contain.

You are a Light. A beacon. A child of God. We are all here to make manifest His glory and love. We are all here for a purpose. And that purpose is NOT to watch the world fall to Satanism. Our purpose is witness the dawn of an age of glory and peace.

Watching The Water – And Learning To Laugh At The Frogs Jumping In To Get Away

How I Made Scientific and God’s Peace with the Bryan Ardis Snake Venom Conspiracy Theory of COVID-19 and the Vaccines

I like Bryan Ardis. I like Stew Peters. I love Stew’s show. I love that Stew Peters gives people like Bryan Ardis a forum, when nobody else will. Thanks to Stew Peters, critical messages from Peter McCullough, Robert Malone, Jane Ruby, Karen Kingston, and many others have gotten out to the world. Even earlier messages from Bryan Ardis. In my opinion, Stew’s a hero.

However, getting the TRUTH out has a price. Sometimes stuff that’s not quite truth rides along with it.

A recent special presentation of the Stew Peters Show called Watch The Water – which is basically an interview of Bryan Ardis by Stew – is an excellent example of paying that price.

I’m not going to review the whole thing. Let me just say that Bryan Ardis makes some great scientific analogies (which many of us professional scientists have made, over the last two years), but then overdoes them by asserting they are LITERAL REALITY.

Many of us have used protein venoms as a teaching tool about the pathogenicity of the spike protein. I have done MULTIPLE posts talking about the spike protein, and even called it the “snake protein” in quotes.

So here is an analogy about analogies not being equivalence.

Ardis’ mistake would be (somewhat badly) analogous to going from “Helium inhalation makes people talk like Donald Duck, which is so gay,” to “Helium inhalation is a Disney plot to turn kids gay.”

Yeah, these statements are kinda similar, but they are NOT identical.

Ardis didn’t HAVE TO GO all the way to saying “it’s not a virus and a spike protein – it’s snake venom”, and “remdesivir is really snake venom”, but he did, and now it’s too late.

I highly recommend just watching the video. Yes, it’s an hour that you will never get back, but I only ask that you watch it until you either finish it, or turn it off and shake your head.

I think I’ve found all the “watch the water” links.

However, I am going to add one more, as a kind of “negative control”.

You see, almost anything can be “watch the water” if you look hard enough.

eilert brought in this tweet video, and EllieLA noted that the surfer sails past a large and almost distinct “Q” composed of foam on the water – beginning at exactly 17 seconds.

So – is THAT what “watch the water” – the QAnon phrase – means?

Or does it mean, like the title implies, that they’re putting VENOMS in the water supply?

Who KNOWS what it means? There have been literally HUNDREDS of speculations as to what “watch the water” means.

Frankly, at this point, my “care” is on hold.

What I DO care about is anything that we can PROVE, or even just prove to be PROBABLY TRUE.

In the context of the TITLE of the Stew Peters documentary, the use of the phrase “watch the water” is clearly a tie to the QAnon saying, but IMO it will do neither the QAnon people nor the COVID critics any good.

I just shake my head thinking that Ardis is invoking QAnon to “prove” his contention, when it’s far more likely that he’s helping “snake venom in drinking water” and “QAnon” undergo some kind of mutual annihilation.

In other words, “Thanks for the help we didn’t need, and didn’t ask for. In fact, if you don’t mind, you can have your shit sandwich back – I’m not hungry.”

I’m not angry at Ardis – in fact, I’m seriously excited about the possibility of making some excellent lemonade out of the lemons he gave us. And I’m not alone. Here is Jordan Sather’s critique of the interview, which he posted on Telegram (h/t GA/FL).

Watched Stew’s “Watch the Water” video with Dr. Bryan Ardis. (I find it funny Stew calls Q a deep state op, but names his movie after a common Q-ism, ‘watch the water’. Helps with marketing I suppose. Though that’s not the point here..)

I think Ardis is onto something, but not the something he thinks he’s onto. He makes a variety of jumps to conclusions that I don’t think are rooted in sound logic. For instance, “because it’s in the TV show, it must be real”, “if the CDC says don’t do it, then do it”, “if the fact checkers debunk it, it must be real”, etc.

Also still going on with this “there’s no such thing as a virus” line – I don’t resonate with this.

I think it’s possible that snake genes were used in the production of the COVID virus, along with bat DNA, eye of newt, toe of frog, and whatever the heck else they used for the witches brew. Who the heck knows. Could this explain some of his points with remdesivir, monoclonal antibodies, and fact checkers he brought up? There are other claims he makes that I think are far fatched though.

I definitely don’t think they put snake venom in water supplies around the country and that’s what caused the “COVID outbreak”. A bioengineered virus and faulty PCR tests are reasonable enough explanations.

One point: the mainstream media is going to have a field day with hit pieces on this one, seeing as people are already sharing it all over the place like it’s fact. And I think this is only going to add to the confusion when trying to wake normies up about COVID. “Now you think it’s snake venom and viruses don’t exist you crazy conspiracy theorist??”. Only going to make life tougher on ourselves.

I’m not totally sold on this doc and do think there’s a possibility of it being a red herring. Don’t let your guard down.

My two cents on it.

This is one of the reasons I follow Jordan Sather – he is open-minded yet SO level-headed. I totally agree with what he’s saying here.

And while we’re at it, here is another TWO-HOUR interview of Ardis by RedPill78.

This interview is VERY interesting, because Ardis talks about Trump’s position on vaccines, and various attempts to set up meetings between Trump and various vaccine opponents, including Ardis and Peter McCullough.

His take on Trump and vaccines may shock a lot of MAGA people.

Also note that around 33-36 minutes into the video, Ardis acknowledges many scientists holding MY viewpoint on this – that SARS-CoV-2 is the agent, being a virus with a venom-like spike protein – although he calls this viewpoint “agreeing with him”. In other words, his fallback position is – COUGH, COUGH – my position.

*SMIRK*

NOW – let’s get to my NEW AND IMPROVED take on all of this.

At first, I was thinking that I was going to have to do a lot of “defending” of truth and basic logic here, but really, the truth defends itself. You know damn well “they” are not putting snake venom in the water supply. You know in your gut that remdesivir isn’t snake venom.

Whether certain key sequences were put into the spike protein is a question that is exquisitely up for grabs – THAT is a real question. We see HIV-related sequences, we know what those sequences DO, that they are in the right place, that they do what is predicted, and we know that they were patented, etc. Smoking guns.

We ALSO see amino acid sequences related to venomous snakes, but they’re the wrong type of venom – mostly neurotoxic – whereas I personally found the ‘snake venom” pharmacological linkage closer to hemotoxic venoms. Whatever. Please note that *I* was primarily using protein snake venoms as an ANALOGY to show why the pathogenic and hemotoxic spike protein was a BAD CHOICE as an immunogen. My analogy doesn’t require similar sequences, although that would be interesting.

But “they’re” not putting venom in the water supply to cause COVID-19. The idea doesn’t jibe with the facts on any end of the assertion. I leave that to YOU to work out.

Remdesivir – the horrible bad drug that it is – has no need of being snake venom.

The OUTCOMES are still the same.

Don’t let anybody give you remdesivir. Don’t take any drugs from a lying company like Pfizer. This is all very simple. I don’t NEED snake venom for any of it.

The only reason *I* needed to invoke “snake venom” was to help people understand why the spike protein was so nasty, and clearly responsible for the fact that the COVID vaccines were every bit as bad as the disease – maybe WORSE.

SO – here is where I suddenly laugh at the frogs jumping needlessly in the water to “get away” from me – a person who has no intention of harming them.

For ALL the bitching and blog-posting that I did, trying to get people to learn a little biology and pharmacology about protein toxins, and how SNAKE VENOMS and SPIDER VENOMS demonstrated the plausibility of a toxic spike protein in the vaccines, causing both disease and vaccine injuries, I probably enlightened a few dozen people, TOPS.

But CHECK THIS OUT. Bryan Ardis’ stuff now has engagement in the MILLIONS.

Bryan Ardis is dropping a BOMB on the other side, that is MISSING the target, but it is going to wake a LOT of people up – in a way that I had hoped to do, but could not.

The parts of what Ardis is saying that are WRONG are going to get “washed away”, so to speak.

But the parts that are right – meaning getting people to think about venoms as very much analogous to the spike protein – that is gonna STICK.

And in my opinion, THAT is GOD’S WORK.

So, is this “How I learned to stop worrying and love the bombshell?”

Maybe so.

Yup. The frogs jump in stupidly, but they’re still God’s wonderful creatures, and they do what they do for a reason.

Now faith is a very integral component in Jesus’ completed work of salvation. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

This episode with the snakes is a foreshadowing of things to come . . . a precursor to Jesus’ death on the cross to save our lives from sin. God chose the circumstances and the action to be taken to save one’s life.

God knows full well the frailty of belief from men, and I believe He has chosen to require only a simple trust from a person in Jesus as Savior. And, although it is impossible to completely understand, God then has given to each of us the sufficient measure of faith . . . it is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God. We can’t fully understand this . . . we have only to accept the gift in belief . . . and give thanks and praise to God for it!

We are fortunate that we have more than a bloodied, pierced, dead Savior lifted up on a cross to look to. We have a triumphant Savior, raised from the dead in total and complete victory over the sin that would deny us life. And now, He has ascended to the Father, our Father in heaven, where He now sits at God’s right hand, interceding on our behalf, until God makes His enemies His footstool.

James Webb Space Telescope Update

MIRI (the Midrange InfraRed Instrument) is now at 6K and the final iteration of mirror alignment is in progress. Once this is done, it’s time to work on commissioning the instruments…and I have no idea what that entails, to be honest. My vague notions of what that meant were all taken care of as part of the mirror alignment process.

The NASA blog put out another article on what JWST is expected to do. It’s expected to learn more about extrasolar planets that we have already detected; in particular it will be able to analyze their atmospheres.

Gold is definitely on another upward climb. It was a couple of bucks higher on Wednesday, but that downtick doesn’t cover the fact that it’s distinctly in the upper 19s now. (1975? I remember that year…) The price of platinum can’t get any rounder than it is right now (even rounder than rhodium’s was last week). Palladium and rhodium are the two losers this week, albeit not by very much. But they are the two metals whose price is most dependent on industry.

T4 Combinatorics

If you’re wondering what “Combinatorics” is (and let’s face it, you probably weren’t wondering until you read that title, if even then), it’s the branch of mathematics that has to do with counting things; including counting the number of possible combinations of things. It’s not “hard” to do, but the concepts are a bit abstract sometimes.

If you’ve ever seen those statements about how many different configurations some puzzle (like a Rubik’s Cube) can have (and only one of them is right!), those were computed with combinatorics. (No one went and looked for them all.)

Ancient Indian physician Sushruta in the 6th century BCE asserted that given six tastes, there are sixty three possible combinations total where they are taken one at a time, two at a time, three at a time, and so forth. The ancient Greeks looked into this sort of thing too. During the Middle Ages, more progress was made, but not in Europe. Again in India more general formulas were found.

The specific problem here is precisely the number of combinations of different objects can occur. As it turns out, that’s also the same number as possible sequences of coin tosses.

Going back to Sushutra’s example, if you flip a coin six times, there are 64 possible outcomes. It could come out tails all six times. It could come out tails the first five times, then heads the last time. It could come out tails the first four times, then heads the fifth time, then tails the last time. And so on. If I were to tabulate all 64 of them with 0s (for tails) and 1s (for heads) it would look like someone counting in base 2 or binary.

There’s another method of stepping through all of the possibilities, and that’s to use a sequence where exactly one of the six things changes each time. That’s a bit trickier, but you can get some cool patterns out of it (like the bottom half of the list being a mirror image of the top half…except for the first digit which is 1 instead of 0).

But something may be bothering you….Sushutra said there were 63 combinations; I have just been yapping about there being 64. The discrepancy is because Sushutra didn’t count the case where none of his 6 samples were being tasted.

So far, perhaps not a surprise. The number of possibilities is 2n, where n is the number of times you toss the coin (or the number of flavors you’re sampling). And this works when the different tries are independent of each other. In the case of the coins, one toss has no effect on any of the others. In the case of the flavors, there are no rules like, for example, that flavor E is forbidden if you are using flavor B.

Slightly more interesting is the question, out of these six possibilities, how many of them have exactly three flavors. Or how many possible sequences of six coin tosses have exactly three heads in them?

Well, it turns out there’s a formula for this. And it involves, interestingly enough, combining formulas for another couple of possible problems.

Let’s say you have six scrabble tiles, A, B, C, D, E, F. How many possible words are there?

You could exhaustively list them all out, but that’s tedious. Instead let’s try thinking about it.

There are six possible choices for the first letter. Once you pick the first letter, though, there are five possible choices for the second letter; so each of the six first possible letter possibilities has five possible second letters. So that’s 6 x 5 = 30 possibilities for the first two letters. You can proceed similarly, 4 possibilities for the third letter, 3 for the fourth, 2 for the fifth, and 1 for the sixth. So we’re looking at 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720 possible combinations. (It’s a good thing we decided not to try to list them all!)

This is a common enough thing that we call this the factorial and denote it with an exclamation point, in this case, 6! = 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720.

I don’t believe it’s possible to form a good word of English out of those six letters, with all of those six letters and no others (but correct me if I’m wrong!); the best I can come up with is FACED. Or DECAF. I guess if you’re sore at the Federal Elections Commission you could say BADFEC.

But this is a game of Scrabble, and so you might settle for using some of the tiles. For example, how many candidate four letter words are there?

You can follow the same reasoning as above. Six possibilities for the first letter, five possibilities (for each of the six) for the second letter (30). Four possibilities (for each of the thirty) for the third letter (120). For each of those, three possible fourth letters (360). But now we STOP, because we don’t pick a fifth, or sixth letter. The math is: 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 = 360. So it’s like 6! only not taken all the way down to 1. In fact, it’s like 6! divided by 2!. Look: (6x5x4x3x2x1)/(2×1); the twos and ones cancel and we’re left with 6x5x4x3. Note that 2 is 6 – 4, i.e., it’s the total number of titles minus the number of tiles actually chosen.

So there’s a general formula here. You have n objects, you want to choose m of them. The number of possibilities is n!/(n-m)!

One thing that needs to be stressed, though! This formula is for use when you care about the order of the selection. In other words, if you grabbed the letters A, C, E, F, it matters to you whether you grabbed them as F, A, C, E or C, A, F, E or FCEA.

When dealing with Sushruta’s flavors, the first, third, fifth and sixth flavors (combined) taste the same no matter what order you’re adding them. It’s as if you didn’t care what order ACEF was written in.

So how do you adjust your answer to the question of how many possible ways to select four of the six letters if you don’t care about the order?

Well, imagine that you had actually written down all of the possible combinations (all 360 of them). Some number of these would have the letters A, C, E, and F in them. In fact, all possible orders of those letters would appear in the list exactly once. How many possible orderings of A,C,E,F are there? We already know this: 4 x 3 x 2 x 1.

And this is true for any possible grouping of four letters. There will be nine other anagrams of those four letters in the list.

So to get the answer, we start with our 360…and divide by 4! which is to say, 24, and get 15. This is the factorial of the number of objects we are choosing (m).

So, remember we got the 360 with n!/(n–m)!; this new number involves dividing again by m!.

So our number of combinations for an unordered choice of m objects out of a group of n objects is n!/[(n–m)!m!]. My combinatorics teacher called it “n-choose-m” or he’d substitute actual numbers.

We could, for example, figure out how many possible groups of ten letters we could pull out of the alphabet. With 26 letters, we have 26!/(16! x 10!).

So punch that into your calculator.

Well, don’t. 26! is probably too big for your calculator.

But you can probably get clever before you punch the numbers in.

Write those factorials out. It turns out you can do a lot of cancelling! You can skip 10×9…x1 on top, and just divide by 16x15x14…on the bottom. Better yet, you can skip the 16x15x…x1 on top and only divide by 10! on the bottom.

26 x 25 x 24 x 23 x 22 x 21 x 20 x 19 x 18 x 17 / 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1.

Right off the bat, you can cancel the 20 up top with the 10 and 2 on the bottom, and the 18 up top with the 6 and 3 on the bottom:

26 x 25 x 24 x 23 x 22 x 21 x 19 x 17 / 9 x 8 x 7 x 5 x 4 x 1

Do a bit more cancelling–get rid of the 5, 7, and 4 by dividing them into the 25, 21, and 24 respectively:

26 x 5 x 6 x 23 x 22 x 3 x 19 x 17 / 9 x 8

You have three even numbers on top. Divide them all by 2 and get rid of the 8 on the bottom:

13 x 5 x 3 x 23 x 11 x 3 x 19 x 17 / 9

And you now have two threes, so you can get rid of the 9 and those 3s

13 x 5 x 23 x 11 x 19 x 17

Well, now, we don’t have to do any dividing! In fact, you should NEVER have to do any dividing after you cancel. Why? We’re counting numbers of combinations, and that has to be a whole number. You won’t get a fraction. So if it looks like you’re about to get a fraction, you messed up somewhere–you didn’t do a cancellation you could have, or you made a simple arithmetic error.

So now go to the calculator, and it turns out there are 5,311,735 possible sets of ten letters you could pull out of 26 letters of the alphabet.

Yikes, that’s a lot!

You can get to some really big numbers this way with bigger “pots” of choices; in fact you can easily get to numbers that are larger than the numbers of quarks in the universe without too much trouble.

In fact, consider the number of possible bridge hands, which is 52!/(39!13!). If you think you’ve played enough bridge to repeat a hand…you’re probably wrong! Because there are 635,013,559,600 of them. That’s still more than the US Debt…though ask me again next week.

(And the game would still be different unless the other three players also each got the same hand as before. This could be computed with our n-choose-m formula, too, applied successively (it’ll be that number, times 39-choose-13, times 26-choose-13, times 26-choose-26) to see how many possible bridge deals there are.)

There’s another clever method to compute m-choose-n. It’s very visually oriented, but it does involve computing all of the smaller problems first.

Start with 1.

Then below it, staggered, write 1 1.

So you see:

You repeat this, over and over again. Each number is the sum of the two above it (and “blank” is zero). So you get:

And so on. What good is this exercise (which is called “Pascal’s Triangle”)?

It turns out that if you go to row n, the mth element is n-choose-m. But you have to start counting from zero. That last row is row 4 (not 4). And if you want 4-choose-2 you have to go to the third element on that row, which is 6. This is logical, because the actual first element is always a 1, and that’s how many ways you can pick zero items out of the group of 4. Or 17, or whatever. The last number is choosing all of the elements, and of course there’s only one way to do that (if you don’t care about the order).

Another neat thing about this triangle is if you sum up everything in the row, you get the total number of possible selections in that row, for example, with 4 items, the total is 16…which is 24.

Pascal’s triangle has a whole host of interesting properties, actually.

Once you see this triangle, it’s pretty clear that the biggest single n-choose-m value is when m is half the size of n. (Or if n is odd, when m is either just above or just below half of n.)

So that, if you toss a coin a hundred times, the most likely outcome is 50 heads and 50 tails, (In fact that is possible about 1×1029 different ways!) though a 49/51 split is almost as common (~9.89 x 1028 different ways), and a 48/52 split wouldn’t be all that surprising either (~9.32×1028 different ways). But 100 heads (or tails) in a row? Ridiculously unlikely! Even a 75/25 split can “only” occur 2.42 x 1023 ways, which sounds like a lot…but is 2 42/100 millionths as common as a 50/50 split. And therefore. 0.00000242 times as likely as a 50/50 split if you try the experiment.

Conversely an exact 50/50 split might be the most likely result, but it’s less likely than a 49/51 and 51/49 split put together, much less if you add all the other near/even splits. There are 2100 possible sequences, that’s 1.267×1030 possibilities. So there’s roughly 1 chance in 12 2/3 you’d get an exact 50/50 split.

The takeaway from this is that an exact “middle” result becomes less and less likely the more things are involved…but a result near the middle becomes overwhelmingly likely the more things are involved.

But what, you might ask, does this have to do with heat and temperature and thermodynamics?

This sort of example does not really have much to do with it, but the general concepts behind combinatorics do have a lot to do with it, as it turns out. Next time…

DEAR MAGA: TGIF Open Thread 20220415

Here we are. Friday. In honor of the day, today’s libation is a Rusty Nail.

For decades, one of the hottest cocktails was the Rusty Nail. But after a good run, the simple combination of scotch and the scotch-based liqueur Drambuie, a word derived from Gaelic meaning “the drink that satisfies,” has fallen off most bar menus and is rarely ordered by patrons.

Just as mystifying as its disappearance was its appearance in the first place. The lineage of the potent after-dinner libation is contested, with many believing it was invented in 1937 for the British Industries Fair trade show. It does appear in the 1967 edition of “Old Mister Boston Official Bartender’s Guide,” the cocktail book of record through the post-Prohibition 20th century. (A similar drink, dubbed the Little Club #1, is included in Ted Saucier’s 1951 “Bottoms Up.”)

By the late 1960s, bars in New Orleans and New York were serving the concoction, and “Have you tried a Rusty Nail?” was a common refrain. The Rusty Nail is often credited to the clever bartenders at the 21 Club in Manhattan sometime in the early 1960s. It makes sense, being that the establishment created the famous B & B—half Bénédictine and half cognac—as well. It’s easy to imagine that the talented crew applied the same formula to another cordial and liquor, but I haven’t been able to substantiate that claim.

Lore has it that the Rat Pack was enamored with the drink, which may have been responsible for the wide appeal in those years. In the 1970s, I mixed many a Rusty Nail at the joints I worked at in New York. They were also a hit at P.J. Clarke’s, a favorite late-night haunt of Frank Sinatra.

As with lots of classics, the recipe varies widely. Ted Haigh, the author of “Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails,” likes two parts scotch to one part Drambuie; “Old Mister Boston” calls for a one-to-one ratio; and many modern versions are far drier, with some suggesting four parts whisky to one part liqueur. You could also substitute bourbon for scotch and get a Rusty Spike. But the Rusty Nail is a classic for a reason, and the two-to-one ratio will always be a fine example of the drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces scotch
  • 3/4 ounce Drambuie

Steps

  1. Add the scotch and Drambuie into a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.

So simple even the Scots can make it. Of course, most of their food is based on a dare.

Okay, in case you haven’t heard, Elon Musk put out an offer to buy Twitter outright on Thursday. Dopey Prince Alaweed from Saudi Arabia turned him down, and the whole platform went nuts with the snowflakes melting as if the sun was shining on asphalt.

These are in no particular order as it is late, and I am pressed for time.

What Elon Musk appears to be doing is perhaps the biggest story that few understand.

I share this perspective having spent thousands of hours in the past several years deep in the weeds of tech operating systems, communication platforms, and the issue of simultaneous users.   What Twitter represents, and what Musk is attempting, is not what most would think.

In the big picture of tech platforms, Twitter, as an operating model, is a massive high-user commenting system.

Twitter is not a platform built around a website; Twitter is a platform for comments and discussion that operates in the sphere of social media.  As a consequence, the technology and data processing required to operate the platform does not have an economy of scale.

There is no business model where Twitter is financially viable to operate…. UNLESS the tech architecture under the platform was subsidized.

In my opinion, there is only one technological system and entity that could possibly underwrite the cost of Twitter to operate.  That entity is the United States Government, and here’s why….

There is no business model, even with paying subscribers, for Twitter to exist.  As the business grows, the costs increase, and the costs to subscribers would grow.  So, what is going on?

The only way Twitter, with 217 million users, could exist as a viable platform is if they had access to tech systems of incredible scale and performance, and those systems were essentially free or very cheap.  The only entity that could possibly provide that level of capacity and scale is the United States Government – combined with a bottomless bank account.

If my hunch is correct, Elon Musk is poised to expose the well-kept secret that most social media platforms are operating on U.S. government tech infrastructure and indirect subsidy.  Let that sink in.

The U.S. technology system, the assembled massive system of connected databases and server networks, is the operating infrastructure that offsets the cost of Twitter to run their own servers and database.  The backbone of Twitter is the United States government.

There is simply no way the Fourth Branch of Government, the U.S. intelligence system writ large, is going to permit that discovery.

MOSCOW, 13 April. /TASS/. Russia introduces mirror sanctions against 398 members of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, congressmen, including the leadership and chairmen of committees, are included in the stop list of the Russian Federation on an ongoing basis. This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, distributed on Wednesday.

“In response to the next wave of anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the administration of [U.S. President] Joe Biden on March 24 against 328 deputies of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, which, taking into account the previously blacklisted Russian parliamentarians, makes up almost the entire composition of it, mirror sanctions restrictions are being introduced against 398 members of the U.S. House of Representatives,” the text reads.

“These persons, including the leadership and chairmen of the committees of the lower house of the US Congress, are included in the Russian stop list on an ongoing basis. Together with other current lawmakers, who, like Speaker of the [U.S. House of Representatives] Nancy Pelosi, was previously banned from entering the Russian Federation , “listing” on the basis of reciprocity is subject to all US congressmen,” the ministry added.

Smolenskaya Square also indicated that Russia, as a response to US sanctions, will soon announce new measures that involve expanding the number of people on the stop list, as well as other steps. “Given the constantly imposed US sanctions, new announcements of Russian countermeasures are planned in the near future, involving an increase in the number of persons included in the stop list and other retaliatory steps,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

It would be interesting to know who the Russians did not sanction, and if this is a move in the larger plan.

Elon Musk’s looming battle with Twitter’s board is a source of major anxiety for company employees – many of whom are reportedly worried that billionaire’s campaign to force changes is just beginning.

Musk’s surprise rejection of a Twitter board seat emerged ahead of a scheduled “day of rest” for company employees, according to a report.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal broke the news on his account the previous night, describing Musk’s decision as “for the best” even as he warned workers they would face “distractions ahead,” Bloomberg reported late Monday.

The uncertainty left Twitter workers feeling “super stressed” about the future, with employees reportedly “working together to help each other get through the week.”

The report cited interviews with Twitter employees who asked not to be identified while discussing the company’s inner workings. Several employees told the outlet that Twitter’s internal environment was a “s–t-show” after Musk’s deal with the board fell through.

It really sounds like they need their blankies and binkies.

This is not the way I sang it, but years ago, I sang this in a concert in one of the great “rooms” in town. I actually got it to ring. This is also one of the spirituals which appear in Michael Tippett’s “A Child of Our Time,” a piece put together in protest of World War Two.
