Just researched this. The truth seems to be somewhere in between, but it’s very murky. There is agreement that external swinging double doors were not found in cold climates.
Double-swinging doors apparently go back to Victorian times, and are more useful for kitchen/butler entrance than for the front entrance to the establishment. Some sources, however, say they were popular in bars, taverns, grocery stores, etc., and did have some level of opening at top and bottom for smoke ventilation – but Hollywood made them ridiculously small for effect. The bigger story is that they were not the “real” doors when used on the front. Front doors were more like a barn door or doors, and opened up against the wall, while the swinging double doors (predecessor of the revolving door) allowed people carrying loads to enter and exit without using their hands. One recent brand of double-swinging door hinge was being sold in 1870. Another patent dates from the 1880s. An even more interesting thing is the ladies’ door!

Hiking, bushwhacking, fishing, seining, camping – especially anything around water.
They were made for slogging thru mud and water and therefore were very popular with cavers. You would ruin a good pair of leather hiking boots in one trip, and sneakers meant you risked a twisted ankle. In the early 1970s those were the only other options since Cordura had not become popular for outdoor stuff until after 1977.

I was first introduced to furlongs per fortnight when I read a Murphy’s Law for engineers (heck, engineers discovered Murphy’s law) and one of the corollaries of Murphy’s law was that dimensions in a specification would be in the most inconvenient units possible, and gave “furlongs per fortnight” as an example. (And I’ve known since high school (at least) what a fortnight is…I had read just enough British fiction.)

Doing genealogy research sometimes you run into property descriptions in chains & rods, iirc, which is very confusing, as are knots.
It’s either an eighth or a sixteenth of a mile (I think an eighth). I’m too lazy right now to look it up to confirm.
In fact the reason the mile is 5280 feet instead of 5000 is that Queen Elizabeth I wanted it to be a whole number of furlongs…IIRC. (She also took us mostly off the Troy system of weights, with the exception of precious metals; I can’t say for sure but I think she didn’t do them as was for fear of dorking up the monetary system.)
I bet you could put together another interesting post just focusing on weights & measures & their historical significance.

Fun bit of trivia — Santa Barbara, California, hired a passing ship captain to survey the old part of the city and put markers. After he collected his fee and left, they gradually noticed that the streets would sometimes not meet straight on at intersections.

They make THE POPE INTERSEX! This is the big exciting twist at the end. I wish I had known so I wouldn’t have watched it. There are almost no redeeming characters in the movie – every cardinal is morally bankrupt/repulsive. The only exception of course is the intersex pope (who – surprise! – has female reproductive parts) & the cardinal who keeps her secret – bc of course that kind of Catholic secret-keeping must be lionized. I’m disgusted. What a thing to release to streaming just in time for Christmas. They would never do this to Muslims, but Christians/Catholics are always fair game to mock/belittle/smear.

It is my current practice to read reviews of ALL movies and if they have ANY wokey bullshit in them, they are a no watch.
For religious movies, I read religious reviewers. If there in non-Biblical, non-Scriptural bullshit in them, the are a NEVER watch.
I can highly recommend a great film I just watched called “Unsung Hero” to anyone. It is a true story, and a paean to the powers of motherhood. DH cried more than me.

From the description of the movie, it looks like the writers synthesized the two conclaves of 1978 where there really was intrigue to get a liberal cardinal on the Papal Throne (Bellini). Remember, Pope John Paul I died of a heart attack just 34 days into office. Cardinal Siri of Florence was the traditionalist leading the votes. Well, he was the one who nominated both JPI and JPII, and threw his support behind them, hence their elections.
At the time, there was a HUGE investigation just completed on the freemasons in the Vatican that was awaiting action. (Never happened) Cardinal Gagnon could not get JPII to move on it. JPI tried, and died as a result of an argument with Cardinal Bellini when he wanted to send Bellini to be the Patriarch of Venice, and Bellini, who was Prefect of Bishops, wouldn’t go. It’s documented in Fr. Charles Murr’s book, Murder in the 33rd Degree.
Since then, both 2005 an 2013 were both Conclaves where the liberals sought to put one of their own on the throne, and in 2013 succeeded. Fr. Murr tells the story in a podcast I’ll have to find, but it is backed up by a book titled, The Saint Gallen Mafia, by Julia Meloni and another that’s sitting in my to be read pile. Fascinating reading.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Hubby was just talking to his cousin from Denmark. He thinks Trump buying Greenland is a great idea and so do a lot of his relatives and friends from the old country.
One of the cousins told his daughter she had relatives in the USA and give her a phone # to call. She came her as a teen as an au pair. She called and they invited her to dinner….
What they did not tell her was about 100 of her American relatives were ALSO invited. It was a fun event featuring Elk among other interesting food.
I think that elk is Hubby’s favorite game meat, but I’ve never had it…
I told the hostess I liked the elk. So we went home from the party with shopping bags full. We ate nothing but elk until we moved to NC a couple months later.
It really is good.

OK, Yours Truly has definitely decided that the 4 OR 5 COVID-19 “vaccine” injections that my late brother Sam took, starting in early 2021, were responsible for the MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) and hit him after he took the “booster” injection at Thanksgiving 2023. The ingredients and mechanisms of these damned injections literally swept away / undermined, all the hard work he had done to help himself grieve and process — in a healthy way — the traumatic death of his wife in the fall of 2018. He was doing OK with this — UNTIL he started taking these damned injections. Then, in the late spring of 2024, the MCI hit him. He lost interest in living and in taking care of himself. This eventually led to his catastrophic fall plus the Kennedy Terminal Ulcer on his back, plus the “sudden onset of dementia” — and then, to his death in October 2024.
